Summer’s parents were with her as she packed her suite. Nick said he asked Phyllis to go to Italy with them. Phyllis replied that she decided not to go because she didn’t want Summer to feel like they were ganging up on her to try and talk her out of leaving. Phyllis was going to pack Summer’s winter gear away and store it in Genoa City. Summer clarified that she was taking it all with her, because she was starting her life in Italy. She saw her parents’ disappointment and she told them not to pretend to be supportive while secretly hoping that she’d change her mind. Phyllis said they were supportive, but it was happening so fast, and they needed a chance to get used to it. Summer reminded Nick that he always said change was growth. He didn’t realize she’d been listening. Summer added that great things were rarely easy, and she thought she’d learn and grow more than she ever had in her life. Summer sent her parents to check her storage unit, and once she was alone, she picked up a photo of herself and Kyle. She flashed back to Tara threatening to disappear with Harrison unless Summer took the job in Italy. In the present, Summer put the photo face-down and her eyes filled with tears.
Kyle was moping around the Abbott house when Jack came downstairs. Jack felt bad when Kyle said he wasn’t able to talk Summer out of leaving him, and she wasn’t returning his calls. He asked how he was supposed to just let her go. He didn’t understand why Summer would throw away what they had. Jack said he’d been there, trying to figure out what went wrong, and sometimes, there were too many obstacles. Kyle refused to just accept that, and he left, determined to try and have one last talk with Summer.
By the time Kyle got to the suite, Summer was already out saying goodbye to her relatives. Kyle asked Phyllis what he could do to convince Summer to stay so he could show her everything would be okay with him, her and Harrison. Phyllis brought up Tara, and Kyle said that was ancient history. Kyle didn’t know where Summer got the idea that he wanted to be with Tara. He asked Phyllis if Nick had put the idea in Summer’s head. Phyllis said Nick wasn’t trashing Kyle – he thought it was admirable that Kyle was stepping up for his son. Phyllis said there was suddenly a ready-made family for her daughter to deal with. She snapped that he put her daughter in a no-win situation. She softened and said she didn’t blame him, and she didn’t think Summer did either. He found the photo that Summer had laid face down and picked it up. Phyllis knew it was difficult, but she thought he had to accept that there was nothing left to fight for. He put the picture down and rushed out.
Summer went to Crimson Lights, where Faith and Mariah were chatting. Summer told Faith about the job and that she was leaving tonight. Mariah stepped away so they could talk. Faith couldn’t believe Summer was just leaving. Summer made it sound positive – she was going to a great city, and Faith could visit. Faith assumed Kyle was going too, and Summer explained that the wedding was off. Faith wanted to know what was going on. Summer said it was complicated, but she was sure Faith would understand since she’d made a conscious decision to change the way things were going in her life. Summer was proud of Faith for that, and now Summer was trying to do the same thing for herself. Faith’s ride was here, and she had to go. She couldn’t believe they were saying goodbye. Summer told her that they were saying ciao. They said they loved each other, and Faith left.
Mariah walked back around the corner and lit into Summer for breaking Kyle’s heart just because he committed to his child. Mariah said she’d been pulling for Kyle and Summer this time, and she even convinced Kyle not to give up on Summer. Mariah stated that Summer was still exceedingly selfish. Summer replied that she wouldn’t waste her breath trying to change Mariah’s low opinion of her. It felt right to Summer that they were leaving things like this – the way that they started. She wished Mariah luck with the pregnancy. “Goodbye, Snowflake,” Mariah said, and Summer left.
Kyle rushed into Crimson Lights, and Mariah told him it was good riddance to Snowflake. He ordered her to stop and keep her nasty comments to herself. He apologized for snapping, since she wasn’t to blame, then she apologized, admitting she overstepped. She said she thought Summer matured a bit this time. She knew it was complicated that he found out he was a dad, but you didn’t say you loved someone and promise to commit your life to them, then bail without even trying to make it work. She apologized for ranting again, but he appreciated her saying that, because he decided he needed to convince Summer that they could make it work. He said thanks and left.
Nikki and Victor were in his office waiting for Summer to come say goodbye. She noted that first Noah, and now Summer, were going off to Europe to chase their passions. He brought up how unhappy they were when Victoria left the last time. Nikki wondered why Summer abruptly took the job. Victor thought anyone would run if they found out their fiance had a three year old. She hoped Summer made the decision for the right reason.
Lauren and Sally were at Society. Lauren told Sally about Summer getting the Marchetti job. Sally pretended she’d only heard rumors about this, but Lauren knew Sally had been paying close attention to that job listing, so surely she knew Summer was hired. Summer walked up, and Sally congratulated her. Summer wanted to speak with Lauren before she left. Lauren was happy for Summer and wanted the best for her. Summer just wanted to share her thoughts about making a smooth transition at JCV. Sally got up to leave the table, and before she left, she said some kind things to Summer and wished her the best.
Sally walked across the room. She thought that Summer was going trash her to Lauren, and she texted Tara with that prediction. Sally added that at least one of them would get what they wanted. Meanwhile, Summer gave Lauren a suggestion off screen, then they said their goodbyes. Summer ran into Billy as she was leaving. She brought him up to speed. She asked him to be there for Kyle as a friend. He told Summer she was a good person. He didn’t think Kyle would want anything to do with him, but he’d be there if he could help. She said she believed there was a good guy inside him, some of the time. He thought she was still in love with his nephew. She told him to have a good life, and he said he was pulling for her.
After Summer was gone, Lauren and Sally’s meeting resumed. Lauren asked Sally if she wanted the job in Milan. Sally said she dreamed about being involved couture at that level again. She added that now Summer was living that dream. Sally realized that the other applicants were probably way more talented than her. Lauren hoped Sally wouldn’t let that affect her confidence going forward. Sally hoped Lauren didn’t take it personally that she was considering what the next phase of her career would like. Lauren said she wouldn’t be a good boss if she didn’t consider the personal and professional growth of her employees. She said Marchetti hiring Summer had no bearing on Sally and what she was capable of. Sally said Summer got that experience because Lauren and Jack gave her a shot. Sally felt she deserved the same opportunity to prove herself. She hoped Lauren would judge her based on her tenacity, creativity and hard work, and even though Summer wasn’t her biggest fan and might think Sally wasn’t ready to step into Summer’s shoes, Sally believed she was. Lauren revealed that Summer suggested Sally replace her as president of JCV.
Lauren wouldn’t just hand Sally the job, but she was going to appoint her acting president. That would give her time to learn the ins and outs and prove she deserved the title and responsibility. Lauren said she was setting Sally up for success.
Kyle rushed in, and Billy told him he just missed Summer. Kyle realized Billy knew. Billy said Summer didn’t admit it, but it sounded like she didn’t think she had any good options. He guessed Kyle felt the same way. Kyle wondered if it was time to give up trying to change Summer’s mind. Billy thought that Kyle should keep trying until the plane took off. He said that if Kyle failed, he failed, but if he didn’t try, he’d live with the regret. Kyle left.
Summer ran into Jack at the park. He let her know he heard about the job, and he thought it was an amazing opportunity. He asked if she talked to Kyle today, and she said there was nothing left to say. Jack let Summer know that Kyle thought he could change her mind. She thought it was best for everyone if Kyle let her go. She tearfully asked Jack to help him see that. Jack said he could’ve predicted things would end up this way from the day that Kyle found out Harrison was his son. Jack had lived through the same situation, and he remembered the toll it took on everyone’s lives. He’d tried to explain that to Kyle, but it didn’t take away his pain. Summer said that Harrison could take away Kyle’s pain. She felt that Jack and Kyle both shared the same commitment to family. She asked him not to let Kyle compromise his relationship with Harrison just to prove something to her. He didn’t think Kyle would or could do that. She said she saw Kyle was happy to be a father, but she was in a different place, and she wasn’t ready.
Summer and Jack talked about the time they thought he was her father. She asked if he remembered the gifts. He recalled that he’d given her one gift for every year that he missed. She asked him to give her one last gift. He fought back tears as she promised to do everything in his power to make sure Kyle accepted her decision. She thanked him. He didn’t need thanks – he brought her into the world, and she’d always have a special place in his heart. He promised she could always call him if she needed anything, day or night.
Summer went to Newman Media and was pleasantly surprised to see that Victoria was also there to see her off. Victoria said the Newman jet was ready whenever Summer was. Summer thanked Victoria for the jet and for the corporate apartment in Milan. Victoria was happy to do it, because she loved Italy. The time Victoria spent in Florence was some of the happiest moments of her life. Victor didn’t like that Summer was leaving, but he understood she had to take advantage of that. She admitted she was nervous, and Nikki, Victoria and Victor gave her a pep talk. Victor mentioned that he and Nikki would be in Florence for a concert. Nikki added that Summer would hopefully come home for visits too.
Kyle went to the park, but Summer and Jack were gone. He called the hotel and asked if Summer had checked out of the suite yet. He rushed off, jumping over the hedges to save time, instead of walking around them.
Phyllis and Summer were in Summer’s suite. Phyllis said she’d visit Summer in Milan after Nick came home. Phyllis got weepy as she told Summer that the world was hers. “You’re not gonna take anything from anyone because you’re my daughter,” Phyllis said. Phyllis said she was down and out after she lost her CEO position at Jabot, bu she pulled on her bootstraps and built this incredible place, and she kept it even when people tried to take it away. Summer said she was going to reboot her life. She told Phyllis she was her hero. Phyllis was surprised because she thought Nick was Summer’s hero. Summer hoped she was half as brave as Phyllis. Phyllis assured Summer that she was so brave and that Angelina Marchetti wouldn’t know what hit her. They hugged, and Phyllis said this wasn’t goodbye.
Jack went home, and Tara was there preparing for her meeting with Lauren. Tara hoped to see Kyle to thank him for setting up the meeting. Jack said Kyle was busy trying talk Summer out of leaving. Tara pretended she wanted Kyle to succeed. She said she couldn’t help but feel her presence here, with Harrison played a big part in Summer’s decision, and she claimed she felt horrible. She said she didn’t want Kyle to blame her or resent Harrison. Jack said Kyle would never do that. He said that this was Summer’s decision, and he wasn’t sure Kyle would ever understand it. Jack said that once Summer was gone, Kyle would take a great deal of comfort in Harrison.
Kyle arrived at the hotel just as Summer and Nick were leaving. Nick firmly told Kyle that they were leaving. Kyle just wanted to talk, and Summer allowed it, but she said he wasn’t going to change her mind. Nick took the bags out. Kyle begged Summer to see this not as an obstacle, but as a blessing – a sweet beautiful kid came into their lives and it’d make things richer. He promised that in time, she’d grow to love Harrison. Both were in tears. He said Harrison already Summer was cool. Summer asked Kyle to stop. She said there was no future between them. “You have nothing left to fight for,” she said. She put her arms around him, and she promised he’d have a wonderful life, but they’d move on for each other. She gave him a goodbye kiss and handed him her engagement ring, then she rushed out.
Tara went to Society and met with Lauren and Sally. Lauren announced Sally’s new job, then she stepped away from the table. Sally said that Summer was the one who recommended her for the job. Tara said it sounded like they were both getting what they wanted. Sally wouldn’t relax until Summer was on the plane.
Billy went to the Abbott house and talked with Jack. Billy revealed that he’d advised Kyle to go after Summer. Jack said Summer took the job for good reason. Billy thought that Summer and Kyle could make it work if they loved each other. “I advised my son that some things in life were not meant to be,” Jack stated. He added that love didn’t always conquer all.
