At their apartment, Sage thinks Gabriel is pathetic for buying furniture at Chelseas suggestion. Billy, on the phone with Chelsea, is surprised to hear about the shopping spree and unhappy to find his front door blocked by boxes addressed to Gabriel. He knocks on Gabriels door and is invited in.
Chelsea runs into Sharon at Crimson Lights. Shes eager to hear about the custody hearing. Sharon was correct to think that a half-naked woman (Sage) in Nicks home with Faith present would have been the deciding factor, and it wasto Nicks advantage.
Summer accompanies Austin to the tack house to confess. The building inspector left three messages for Nick that he never delivered, and now the place could be shut down as soon as Valentines Day. Nick is livid and demands an explanation. Austin was focused on his other job, shooting a commercial for Joe Clark. Until Nick says otherwise, bartending is Austins primary job.
Dylan delivers pizza and Chianti to Averys office. Hes sorry for doubting her devotion to him. As he kisses her, Joe appears, supposedly to see Michael, but he does an excellent job of getting under Dylans skin. Dylan tries to contain his rage, but Joe gets the better of himand Dylans fist in his face.
Nick arranges a meeting with the inspector and hurries off, refusing Austins help. He leaves Faith in Summer and Austins charge but not before taking a dig at them for being young and irresponsible. After he leaves, Austin sarcastically thanks Summer for having his back. She couldnt. She agrees with Nick: Austin messed up.
Chelsea shouldnt blame herself for encouraging Sharons aggressive approach in court. It turns out Mariah tanked Sharons case. In the course of conversation, Chelsea reveals that shes acquainted with Sage and her husband, Gabriel, which is why she knew there couldnt have been any hanky-panky going on between her and Nick. She notices a gleam in Sharons eye. Does Sharon still have her sights on Nick? Not romantically, but perhaps they could be friends again. Chelsea doubts it. Sharon insists its possible, witness Chelsea and Adams reconciliation.
Chelsea hears Billy talking in Sage and Gabriels apartment and enters. Gabriel now wants her advice on placement of the new furnishings. Chelsea bites and sends Billy home to start dinner. Sage throws up her hands and leaves. Chelsea apologizes for causing friction between Gabriel and his girlfriend. Not his girlfriend, he corrects, his wife.
Austin and Summer argue. Hes trying to make his own way and doesnt like being under his father-in-laws thumb, is that so hard to understand? No, but she expects him to think before he acts. Does that include their impulsive marriage? he wonders.
Sharon finds Dylan in the park with his hand in a snowbank. He doesnt want to discuss it, but she suspects his problem begins and ends with Joe, Averys ever-present ex-husband. Its hard to let go, she muses.
Avery returns to her office and finds Joe holding a soda can to his face. She doesnt need to ask. They talk about the reasons their marriage failed. One particularly vivid memory involves a Valentines Day date during which he ignored her to conduct business over the phone. A man approached and asked Avery to dance, which she refused. When Joe wandered away from the table though, phone to ear, she changed her mind. Joe remembers the scenario differently. In any case, he admits he wasnt the best husband he could have been, but he wasnt the worst. She focused on his shortcomings to justify her affair with Dylan. She accepts her share of the blame.
Sharon is mortified when Dylan sees the remnants of her tantrum at home. She explains that it happened right after court. She intended to torch some family photos. Dylan shudders to think what Nick could do with such evidence. Sharon could lose Faith forever.
Sage turns up at the Underground, across the bar from Nick. She congratulates him on winning custody and gushes over what a great parent and overall good guy he is. And why is Sage there and not home with her hubby? he half jokes, knowing that the marriage is for show only. They down a couple of shots, drinking to better times ahead, and then he goes home to Faith. (Such a good dad!)
Gabriel explains to Chelsea that he and Sage eloped and things have been rocky ever since. He takes the opportunity to investigate her feelings toward Adam. Did she and her husband fight? Oh, sure, but they worked it out because they loved each other. He asks an even bolder question: If Adam were to return today, would she take him back? Shes unsettled and decides its time for her to go. Theyll talk feng shui another time.
Summer is spoiled. Austin never said he was perfect. Maybe she doesnt understand him at all. Nick returns in the middle of their argument and makes things worse. Because he loves his daughter, he wont fire Austin, but hed better shape up. Austin quits on the spot and leaves. Summer is outraged at his ingratitude to her daddy, but Nick understands. He tells her to go to him and tell him he still has a job, but she refuses.
While Sharon tends to Dylans hand, they agree that theyre people of extremes and need to exercise better self-control. They make a pact to look after each other. Simultaneously, at Averys office, she nurses Joes injury.
Austin drinks a beer at the Underground and fires off a text to a friend.
Billy finds Chelsea in the hallway and asks why the tears. Something Gabriel said reminded her that today is Delias birthday. He consoles her and takes her into their apartment for dinner.
As Joe prepares to leave Averys office, he notices the pizza box. Too bad its not deep-dish, her favorite. She remembers his favorite as well. They part amicably. In fact, after hes gone, her memories of that Valentines Day date improve.
