Abe and Kate go over the Key to the City ceremony in the town square. Kate says they are ready to go, they just need their guests of honor.

Marlena and John eat together in the town square. Marlena is sorry to miss Justin and Kayla's wedding for this ceremony while John is glad to have an excuse not to go because Steve is his best friend and he knows no matter what he says, it's killing him to stand by while Kayla marries another man.

At the Kiriakis Mansion, Sonny assures Victor that nothing is going to go wrong now that Reverend Will is going to perform the ceremony. They joke about what they could do. Victor promises to be on his best behavior. Victor says after what Justin has been through, he deserves this happiness and that Kayla does too after what Steve Johnson put her through, remarking that she is so much better off without him.

Jack tells Steve that Kayla and Justin are getting married in a couple hours so this is Steve's last chance to fight for her. Steve responds that he's thrown Kayla's life into a tail spin too many times so he won't do that again. Jack warns that it's a choice he will be living with for the rest of his life. Steve. Steve admits he's not sure of that at all.

Kayla opens a drawer and finds her and Steve's old wedding photo, causing her to flashback to their wedding.

Hope tells Jennifer that she sees Steve every day and knows it's killing him so it's been hard not to say anything to Kayla but he swore her to secrecy. Jennifer hates the thought of Kayla and Justin getting married when she has no idea how much Steve wants her back, as Justin was coming around the corner and hears them. Jennifer tells Hope that she needs to go get the gift to Kayla so she walks off. Justin then comes around the corner and greets Hope. Hope thought he was at home getting ready for the wedding. Justin informs her that he just happened to hear them talking about Steve. Hope asks what he heard. Justin reveals he heard them say that Steve wants Kayla back.

Will says he should go look up the wedding vows but Victor is sure Justin and Kayla have it down. Victor jokes to do it fast so they can all start drinking. Will asks Sonny if he's heard from Allie. Sonny says not yet but it's still soon and she has a lot to think about. Victor questions them talking about Allie. Will informs him that Allie is back in Salem and pregnant. Victor asks who the father is. Sonny explains that Allie is not saying but she's giving her baby up for adoption. Victor calls that probably a good idea. Sonny then informs him that he and Will want to adopt her baby. Sonny adds that she already offered the baby to Rafe but they don't know what she's going to do. Victor warns that they will be making a terrible mistake.

Abe tells Kate that he can't believe to go along with this PR stunt of hers. Kate argues that it's not a stunt but publicity is good. Abe hopes so since she had to strong arm Hope and Steve into accepting the award. Kate says Abe will thank her. Kate complains about the Spectator sending an intern to cover it. Abe points out that's because she scheduled it at the same time as Steve and Kayla's wedding. Abe then corrects himself that he meant Justin and Kayla as he's just in the habit of saying Steve and Kayla.

Kayla gets a phone call from her son Joey in prison. Kayla wishes he could be there. Kayla asks if he's talked to Steve which he has. Kayla tells Joey that she and Steve will always be connected because of he and Stephanie. Kayla says she really wants this marriage and Steve understands and wants her to be happy. Kayla adds that it means the world to her that Joey is happy for them.

Justin tells Hope that he's confused because he just ran in to Steve and he went out of his way to wish he and Kayla the best. Justin asks if that was a lie. Hope suggests it was more of a performance. Hope doesn't think it's a surprise to anyone that Steve is still in love with Kayla but he's not planning on acting on it. Justin says he just heard Jennifer say that Steve wants her back so he questions why he doesn't just tell her. Hope informs him that he was going to but Justin proposing meant he missed his chance. Justin recalls Kayla finding a letter from Steve in her office right after he proposed. Hope says Steve didn't want to ruin their happiness. Justin states that Steve is still in love with Kayla and wants her back while Kayla has no idea but if she did, it could change everything..

Victor argues that Will and Sonny are out of Sami's grasp now but if they adopt that child, she will suck them back in and make their life a living hell. Sonny says they want another child and asks if that matters. Victor says there are children all over the world so they can find one not related to Sami. Sonny argues that Victor lost his moral authority to weigh in after what he and Xander did to Sarah and Brady. Will suggests not doing this today and wants them to relax. Will adds that if Allie gives her baby to Rafe, it's all moot anyways which Victor hopes for. Will states that it's all up to Allie so they just have to wait and see how everything plays out.

John and Marlena approach Abe and Kate in the town square. John asks where Steve and Hope are. Kate says who knows. Kate jokes that maybe Vivian has them since she's back in town. John assures that she's in jail. Kate hopes she stays there. Kate asks about John and Marlena's speeches. Marlena says she has her notes while John plans to wing it which Kate questions. John jokes about the situation with Princess Gina and Stefano. John says he'll simply thank Steve and Hope for coming to the rescue and stopping Orpheus. Kate worries about Hope and Steve not showing up soon.

Steve asks Jack what kind of jerk he would be to wait until the wedding day to open his mouth and asks what good it would do when Kayla loves Justin and said yes to his proposal. Jack brings up another time that Kayla thought she couldn't have Steve and she thought just caring for him would be enough but that didn't work out well. Jack doesn't think Steve is being fair to Justin or Kayla. Steve talks about Justin and Adrienne getting remarried then not long after, Adrienne died, while Kayla put him back together. Steve says he can hear Adrienne telling him how he wouldn't have fallen into Stefano's clutches if he wasn't out of the country then he and Kayla could have taken care of Justin together. Jack points out that Steve is here while Adrienne is not and it seems like he's putting other people's happiness in front of his own. Steve feels it's about time. Steve declares that he loves Kayla too much to mess this up for her. Steve then gets up and walks away.

Jennifer goes back to Kayla and notices that she's been crying. Kayla tells her that she was just talking to Joey and she misses him so much. Kayla adds that Joey was sweet, supportive, and happy for her and Justin but she could hear in his voice that he really wishes she and Steve were remarrying. Jennifer says Joey doesn't know Kayla and Justin as a couple. Kayla thinks Joey really misses being with his family. Jennifer assures that Joey wants her to be happy. Kayla insists that she is happy and marrying a wonderful man.

Justin questions what stopped Hope from telling Kayla what she knows. Hope tells her that she and Jennifer decided that Steve was the only person who could tell Kayla how he feels and he chose not to. Justin asks who else knows. Hope tells Justin that they have been friends for 33 years so if she thought that Kayla didn't love him, she would tell him. Hope talks about how Kayla was telling them this morning how happy Justin makes her. Hope asks Justin not to let what Jennifer said ruin his day because Kayla loves him. Justin responds that he won't. Hope wishes she could be there today but she has a key to accept. Hope hopes his day is perfect. She kisses him on the cheek and then walks away. Justin turns and walks back the way he came.

Will says he does have to go learn the vows so he exits the room. Sonny tells Victor that he thought Justin would be here by now. Victor asks where he is. Sonny mentions that Justin said he was going to put flowers on Adrienne's grave but he seemed a little nervous and sad. Victor feels he hasn't seen Justin this happy in ages. Justin then arrives and apologizes for being late. Sonny asks him what's wrong.

Hope arrives at the town square so Kate asks where Steve is. Hope says she has no idea. John remarks that it wouldn't surprise him if Steve ditched this and crashed the wedding. Steve then arrives. Kate questions what he's wearing. Abe says all that matters is that he's here. Kate wants to go over the agenda before the intern from the Spectator gets there. Hope stops them and asks for a moment with Steve. Hope tells Steve that she has to tell him that she and Jennifer were talking earlier and Justin overheard Jennifer say that Steve wants Kayla back. Steve asks if he's going to say anything to Kayla. Hope doesn't think so since she told him that was Steve's call. Hope tells Steve that her, Justin, Jennifer, and Jack all know so she thinks it's time that he tells the one person who really needs to know.

Jennifer does Kayla's hair. Kayla guesses she is ready then. Jennifer knows Justin will give her something new in the ceremony. Kayla mentions that Justin wrote a song for her. Jennifer gives Kayla a blue bracelet as something old, borrowed, and blue. Jennifer adds that Adrienne gave it to her after Abigail was born and she knows how much they are all missing her today. Jennifer explains that the blue stones represent love, friendship, honesty, loyalty, and clarity of feelings so she wishes all of those things for her, especially the last one because she knows she's struggling with her feelings about Steve. Jack then enters and asks if he was interrupting something. Kayla informs Jack that Jennifer was just asking her if she's having second thoughts about getting married today and she then admits that she is.

Steve tells Hope that there are so many reasons not to say anything to Kayla. Kate interrupts and says the intern from the Spectator is here so she sends them to the podium where the crowd claps. Abe takes the podium and says it's his great pleasure to honor two people who have a long history of bravery and service to this community. Steve flashes back to his wedding to Kayla. Abe presents the first key to the city to Steve Johnson. Steve had zoned out until Hope and Kate call his name so Steve steps forward to accept the key to the city.

Justin informs Sonny and Victor that he went to the cemetery and had a florist make the same wedding bouquet that Adrienne carried at their Greek wedding and he placed it near her headstone. Justin says he stood there and thought about what marriage means to him now and then. Justin says he and Adrienne hadn't known each other long and had no idea what was ahead of them including four sons, four weddings, infertility, cancer, so much drama, and so much happiness. Victor says at this point, life generally gets simpler. Victor adds it's less grand but he has a better idea of what lies ahead; no more sons, one wedding, fewer tears, and hopefully much more happiness. Victor calls for a drink so Sonny pours them glasses. Victor calls Justin a lucky man who will have had two wonderful wives and says he deserves this happiness as they toast their drinks.

After the ceremony, Hope asks Abe what they are supposed to do with the keys to the city. Abe mentions the reception but Kate informs them that there was nothing in the budget for a reception. Marlena suggests they all go to the Brady Pub to celebrate then. Hope calls that a great idea and asks if Steve had any other plans. Steve responds that he's free as a bird.

Kayla wonders if there was ever a bride who didn't question what she's doing on her wedding day but this feels different and she knows what blessings a marriage can bring but also that you can feel so alone in a marriage. Kayla knows what she wants and what she doesn't want. Kayla says her life with Steve was unpredictable and a roller coaster while with Justin she thinks it will be different because he's reliable and loving which is what she really needs. Kayla goes to get her purse to get ready to go. Jack tells Jennifer that it sounds like Kayla was giving herself a sales pitch. Jennifer says that's because she believes Steve doesn't love her anymore and there's nothing they can do about that. Kayla comes back and says she's ready to get the show on the road.

Abe credits Kate for the event going smoothly. Kate tells him they've got work to do because the aftermath of the event is always more important than the event itself. Kate informs Abe that she posted a live stream on social media and it has over 100,000 views and counting which shocks Abe.

John and Marlena eat with Hope and Steve at the Brady Pub. John tells an old story about he and Steve while Steve is obviously distracted. John asks if he's okay. Steve claims he's fine. Hope tells him he can be honest, bringing up that Kayla is marrying his brother in law. Steve admits it's kind of hard to think about what might have been but the truth is, he and Kayla spent more years apart than together and that's on him. Marlena tells Steve that he's not fooling anybody. John points out that the wedding is about to start and says if Steve isn't going to listen to them, he can try listening to his heart.

Jack, Jennifer, and Kayla arrive at the Kiriakis Mansion. Jennifer notes that Kayla's hands are shaking and asks if she's okay. Jack and Jennifer then head in to the living room where Justin is waiting with Will. Victor and Sonny sit as the audience and wait for Kayla to enter. Sonny worries that something is wrong. Jennifer steps out to check on Kayla. Kayla's shoe broke and says she can't enter. Jack questions what's going on. Jennifer tells Jack to stall because they have a wardrobe malfunction. Jack goes back in and claims he forgot he was supposed to recite one of Kayla and Justin's favorite poems.

Steve says he's not going to crash the wedding and declare his love. Steve adds that Kayla is the mother of his children so she should already know how he feels. Marlena asks what if she doesn't know and talks about how Steve has been trying to convince Kayla he doesn't want her as part of his future. Marlena suggests Kayla took him at his word which Hope agrees with. Marlena asks if Steve is afraid of being rejected by Kayla. Steve says he's not afraid so John suggests doing something about it.

Kayla questions her dress length with no heels on. Jennifer assures that she's beautiful. In the living room, Jack continues the poem. Sonny questions Victor about this being Justin and Kayla's favorite poem. Victor remarks that Jack has finally lost his mind. Justin thinks back to Jennifer saying she hates the thought of Kayla and Justin getting married when she has no idea that Steve wants her back. Kayla then enters the room which makes Justin smile as she joins him.

John argues that Steve is not the type of person to sit around and wait for things, he always makes it happen which Hope agrees with. Marlena tells Steve that he has to make his own decision here and he will have to live with it for the rest of his life. Steve admits he doesn't know if he's prepared to do that. Steve declares that it won't be good for him to sit around and watch Kayla and Justin live happily ever after so he realizes he has to do something about it.

Kate tells Abe that they now have over 237,000 likes. Abe questions how that can be. Kate explains that the Kardashians received the key to the city of Beverly Hills years ago and they follow her. Kate says she tagged them, they reposted, and now Abe is famous. Abe questions that being because of the Kardashians. Kate says it's because he gave a lovely speech and it resonated universally. Abe points out that Kate wrote the speech while Kate notes that Abe delivered it with heart. Kate asks if Abe will now admit the ceremony was a good idea and hiring her was the right decision. Abe admits that and tells her not to do anything to make him change his mind.

Will begins the wedding ceremony for Kayla and Justin.

Hoep asks if Steve is finally going to tell Kayla how he feels about her. John tells him he better go now if he's going to stop the wedding. Steve responds that he's not stopping any wedding. Steve explains that it won't be good for him to sit around and watch Kayla and Justin be happy together. Hope asks what he's going to do. Steve brings up a Black Patch case that will assist the ISA helping Shane which will take months of work around Europe. Steve tells John that he wants that case. John points out that would mean leaving Salem indefinitely which Steve confirms.

Will continues the ceremony and asks if anyone objects but no one does. Will starts to continue but Justin stops and declares there is something he needs to say.
