Kate joins Abe at Julie's Place. Abe tells her that whatever she wants, he doesn't have time as he's waiting on someone for a job interview. Kate reveals that she is who he is waiting for.

Abigail enters the living room of the DiMera Mansion where Chad is staring at the portrait of Stefano. Abigail asks him what's going on. Chad responds that his father won't be able to hurt him or anyone else anymore because last night, he killed Stefano DiMera.

Gabi is in her room and looks in the mirror. She sees the necklace with the ring that Stefan got her and thinks back to when they were getting married.

Kayla sits outside the Pub wiping tears from her face. Justin walks by and asks why she's crying. Kayla tells him that she just came from seeing Steve. Justin tells her it's okay and she doesn't have to say it as he guesses that she and Steve are getting back together.

Steve remains in his hospital bed, thinking back to arguing with Kayla. Hope enters the room with flowers. Steve jokingly calls her his partner in crime. Hope informs him that she saw the flowers in the nurses station and brought them in. Steve guesses someone is just wishing him to get well. Hope asks him what's wrong. Steve informs her that he just told Kayla that she should be with Justin.

Kayla tells Justin that she and Steve are not getting back together. Kayla says that Jennifer showed her that it was a tender situation and that it was unfair to string them both along so she had to make a decision but Steve made the decision for her and told her that it's over and that she should be with Justin.

Chad informs Abigail that the police gave he and Tony the microchip removed from Steve's brain. Abigail wonders why they'd think they would want it. Chad explains that Dr. Rolf made it using DiMera money so it technically belongs to them and they weren't going to risk it getting in to the wrong hands. Chad feels they metaphorically put a stake in Stefano's heart. Abigail understands if it was hard for him. Chad states that his father died a long time ago and he wishes he stayed dead. Abigail says he now will but Chad is not so sure because Dr. Rolf could have made more chips. Abigail admits the Phoenix does always have a way of rising from the ashes. The door to the DiMera Tunnels then opens, startling Abigail and Chad.

Abe tells Kate this interview is over as she gave a phony name. Kate knows he wouldn't have agreed to the meeting otherwise. Kate asks for five minutes and promises he won't regret it. Abe responds that he already regrets it as he sits back down. Kate explains that the mayor's spokesperson is the most important job at City Hall and he needs someone with experience and gravitas. Abe argues that people are suffering in the aftermath in the near tragic course of events while Steve and Hope are struggling with the knowledge of all the people they hurt while Kate was the one person who could have stopped it, but she didn't. Abe questions how Kate lives with herself.

Steve repeats to Hope that he told Kayla that she should be with Justin. Steve admits he was going to fight for her at first but then he found out about all the horrible things he did to her as Stefano including kidnapping her and nearly gassing her to death. Hope understands why he pushed Kayla away.

Justin doesn't understand since he thought Steve was determined to fight for her. Kayla says he was until he found out everything he did to her the past few months. Justin thinks back to telling Steve about what he did. Justin then asks Kayla if he told her how he found out. Kayla says that he said John told him but that doesn't matter because he wasn't prepared to deal with it. Kayla adds that Steve believes she would be better off and safer with Justin. Justin asks what Kayla believes.

Gabi gets a call and starts talking about Gabi Chic work but she is informed that it's been cancelled by Chad. Gabi argues until she gets hung up on. Gabi wishes Stefan was still here.

Tony emerges from the DiMera Tunnels. Chad questions what he was doing down there. Tony informs them that he was in the wine cellar and proposes a toast. Anna comes in and announces she and Tony are leaving Salem so they came to say goodbye.

Hope thinks she and Steve are the only two people who understand how they feel. Steve knows everyone else says it wasn't their fault. Hope feels that doesn't change the fact that she pushed Jennifer off the balcony and kissed John. Hope can't help but think of what if she hadn't trusted Dr. Rolf then Stefano wouldn't have had any influence over her. Steve says the hardest part is knowing it didn't have to go down that way. Hope declares that they did all of these unspeakable things together.

Kayla tells Justin that he knows how she feels about him, she loves him and always will. Justin says he's never doubted that but that's not the issue. Justin doesn't want her by default or for them to be together just because Steve walked away as that won't work for him.

Abe tells Kate that it's not just Steve and Hope who were hurt but Kayla, John, and Marlena. Kate apologizes for everything that happened but Abe says that's not enough. Abe thought Kate had changed after Theo was shot. Kate questions that being what this is all about. Abe argues that Theo almost spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair because Kate pulled him in to her drama with the DiMeras. Kate recalls Abe doing PR for the DiMeras not long ago and Theo being a DiMera so she calls it a really complicated thing. Kate says that Stefano was her friend, enemy, lover, and husband but now he's just a memory. Kate says they all have a chance to start over again and asks if he's going to begrudge her that chance. Kate questions if he's blaming Hope and Steve for what they did. Abe argues that their situations are completely different but Kate argues that she was under Stefano's spell too but in a different way. Kate takes complete responsibility for what she did and says she will always regret what happened.

Chad questions Tony and Anna leaving town. Anna says they are anxious to get back to their life in Europe with Carrie and Noah. Tony adds they'll be away from the ghost of their father. Abigail asks if he's told Kristen. Tony says he wanted to and hoped she would join them here but he was not able to reach her. Anna says they don't have time to wait because their plane is leaving in a couple of hours. Chad jokes about not repeating the last time they were all together. Tony remarks that Chad will need a little more firepower to deal with his last houseguest before he ejects Gabi Hernandez. Gabi walks in and says that's Gabi DiMera, warning him to never forget it.

Kate mocks Abe never making an error in judgment and goes over Hope as Gina being police commissioner and Ben almost being executed while convicted felons escaped prison. Kate remarks that Jack was doing a better job as mayor with amnesia. Abe questions this being her strategy to impress him and asks why she would want to work for him then. Kate praises him as mayor but she also knows he has problems and says the latest polls show voters have lost confidence in him or are not happy with his performance but she can change that with her amazing PR skills.

Gabi brings up Chad cancelling her shipment for her fall line without consulting her. Chad says he's the boss. Gabi asks the board would feel about that and brings up Chad being under the spell of Stefano. Gabi suggests he hire a full time psychiatrist. Gabi tells Anna that she can get her back to Europe but Anna reveals that she and Tony are already leaving today without her. Anna says she and Tony will be sticking together so he and Chad will have her full support. Gabi brings up Chad trying to murder Tony. Chad argues that he's not under Stefano's support anymore. Gabi asks what if Stefano comes back and mocks how Anna poked Steve's eye out with her shoe. Anna argues that she did what she had to do to protect Tony and that she never intended to stab Steve's eye. Gabi remarks that Steve had one eye to begin with so now he's back to his old self.

Hope suggests Steve read the card that came with the flowers but Steve doesn't want to know if it's from Kayla, asking who else would send him flowers. Hope encourages him so Steve opens the card.

Justin tells Kayla that he knows how difficult this is for her and how much she is hurting. Justin wants to hold her and tell her everything will be okay but he can't because he's not sure she would be here now if Steve hadn't pushed her away. Justin declares that he can't be her consolation prize. Justin says he wants to be together but only if it's her choice and right now it isn't.

Gabi tells Chad to uncancel her order immediately and argues how she is most qualified to run the company. Gabi talks about how hard she worked to become a CEO and she's proud to be Stefan's wife. Tony says they have a flight to catch and tells Gabi to leave so they can get on with their goodbye. Gabi refuses to be pushed out and argues that Stefan is no less a DiMera than any of them. Gabi adds that Abigail is no more DiMera than she is. Gabi says Stefan ran the company better than them and she won't let them forget him. Gabi argues that she's going to the office to run the company while they have champagne. Gabi storms out while Tony, Anna, Chad, and Abigail toast their glasses of champagne.

Steve sees the flowers are from Anna DiMera, apologizing for poking his eye out with her shoe. Steve says Anna did him a favor as if not for her, he wouldn't be himself again. Steve talks to Hope about how he originally lost his eye in a fight with Bo and how he terrorized her while working for Victor. Steve says he wanted to believe Kayla could change him but he's still the same Steve "Patch" Johnson. Steve adds that Kayla is definitely better off with Justin and safer. Hope responds that safer doesn't always mean happier. Steve thinks Kayla loves Justin so he wants her to have a life with him, which he can't give her.

Kayla says that Justin knows better than most that she and Steve loved each other for a very long time. Kayla brings up that Steve said none of this would've happened if he hadn't stayed away. Kayla thinks the other reason Steve didn't come back is because she went behind his back to Stefan to get the Bionic Eye. Kayla talks about Steve always making decisions when they were married but she did it that one time and he couldn't forgive her. Kayla calls it all Steve's fault. Kayla argues that she raised Stephanie as a single mother, put herself through medical school, and became chief of staff at the hospital so she's not giving that up. Kayla thinks she's finally seeing that she can't ride that roller coaster with Steve anymore. Justin asks if that's how she really feels or if it's just the hurt and grief talking. Kayla says it's her love for him. Kayla talks about Justin making her feel safe, loved, and protected which is what she wants in a relationship right now. Kayla says she doesn't want to be anywhere else. Kayla calls Steve her past and Justin her now and her future as she kisses him.

Steve asks Hope to be there for Kayla. Hope says she wants to be but she's not sure she knows how to be right now since she wasn't there for her for the past year. Hope brings up Ciara, Shawn, Jennifer, and Claire as well. Hope doesn't know how to move past any of this and admits she hasn't felt like herself in a long time so she wonders if she never does again.

Kate tells Abe that he needs someone who can convince the people of Salem that he is completely in control of everything and that he had nothing to do with the chaos and mayhem going on in Salem. Kate says that she's the person who can convince the people of Salem. Kate adds that he doesn't have to hire her but when the next election rolls around, he will be toast.

Tony asks how to get rid of Gabi. Abigail suggests just giving Gabi control of Gabi Chic. Chad questions giving her what she wants. Abigail feels it's keeping their enemies closer. Chad feels they tried that and it didn't work. Anna is sorry as she feels like it's all her fault since she temporarily joined forces with Gabi. Chad thanks her but blames himself for getting them into this mess and says he will get them out. Chad promises not to let this drag on and make his priority that their next toast will be to the departure of Gabi from their business, lives, and home.

Abe tells Kate that her five minutes are up. Kate knows there are really no other candidates. Kate tells Abe that she's the best person for the job and he knows it as she exits.

Steve tells Hope that Justin was reluctant to tell him everything he did to Kayla but he got it out of him. Hope says every day, she finds out something else she has done which Steve relates to. Hope comments on how damn pleased she was with herself as Steve recalls them toasting to getting everything they wanted. Steve remarks that maybe now, he's finally getting exactly what he deserves.

Justin suggests Kayla shouldn't make a decision right now and take time to process it. Kayla assures that she has processed it and she chooses Justin as they kiss. Kayla asks Justin to take her home now so they walk off together.

Tony suggests toasting to the future, calling it the first time that their father won't be part of it. Tony says he's always been proud to be a DiMera but it will mean something entirely different going forward as they all toast their drinks. Tony hugs Chad and says he knows he's leaving the company in the best hands. Tony wishes him luck in getting Gabi. Abigail then walks Tony and Anna out.

Gabi goes to the office, on the phone saying she needs to speak to Mr. Shin so they can do everything she can to make sure her husband's legacy is not forgotten. Gabi then sees someone sitting at the desk with their back turned and asks if it's Stefan.
