Brady is at work at the Basic Black office when he comes across Rachel's death certificate again. Nicole comes in and sees it as well.

Xander brings Mickie into the living room of the Kiriakis Mansion and talks about the wedding. Xander says they are about to become a family and they are going to be together forever.

At Eric's apartment, he reveals to Sarah that Mackenzie is not their daughter. Sarah questions him and calls that crazy. Eric wishes they were her parents but they are not.

At the hospital, John signs Marlena's release forms and says he can finally take her home. Marlena responds that she can't actually leave yet because she got word that Steve hasn't waken up from surgery yet so she wants to check on him. John encourages that Steve will wake up and hopefully be back to the old Steve.

Kayla pleads for Steve to come home. Steve then wakes up in his hospital bed. Kayla tells him to talk to her. Steve responds by asking who she is and where he is. Kayla tells him he's in the hospital after an operation. Steve questions her calling him Steve. Kayla says that's his name. Steve asks if she is his doctor. Kayla explains that they used to be married. Steve asks why they aren't anymore. Kayla calls it a long story. Steve asks if she operated on him which she confirms. Steve asks what's wrong with him. Kayla calls it complicated as she worries about Steve not remembering her.

Sarah can't believe Eric is doing this on her wedding day. Eric assures he's not making this up as he wishes it was a mistake but Mickie is not theirs. Sarah asks where their baby is then. Eric responds that their daughter is dead.

Xander talks about Sarah falling in love with him the night that he delivered her baby on the side of the road which is why he switched the babies so he could be her hero. Xander says it was all about what Sarah wanted and needed. Xander puts Mickie in her crib and says he did what he did to spare Sarah that pain. Justin then walks in and questions what exactly he did.

Brady tells Nicole that he's supposed to be strong and move forward with work but it's really hard. Nicole promises the pain won't last forever. Brady wonders if he'll ever really get over losing Rachel or if Kristen will either.

At the hospital, a nurse brings Kristen a baby to hold.

Justin questions Xander about what pain he spared Sarah. Xander claims he just told Sarah not to bother with 4 inch heels on her wedding day so she's not uncomfortable. Xander comments that Justin looks exhausted and asks what's the matter. Justin explains that he was at the hospital all night as Kayla operated on Steve to remove the chip that made him think he was Stefano. Xander questions him sticking around for the whole thing. Justin says he wanted to be there to support her and asks where else he would be. Xander remarks that he has every reason to be nervous that Kayla and Steve will get back together and he will be left in the dust.

Marlena and John run in to Kayla, mentioning that they were just about to go see Steve. Kayla informs them that Steve woke up a little while ago. Marlena notes she doesn't seem to happy about it and asks if he still thinks he's Stefano. Kayla responds that he doesn't have any idea who he is or who she is and says he doesn't remember anything. Kayla worries that something went wrong with the surgery. John wonders if Dr. Rolf is behind this. Marlena offers to help.

Sarah argues with Eric that their baby is not dead as Xander delivered her and she heard her first cries. Eric says the baby was alive when she arrived at the hospital but after that, he cannot explain what happened. Sarah insists that she was fine as Xander had her examined and brought back to her. Eric informs her that the baby brought back to her was not their's and she doesn't belong to them. Sarah calls it crazy and asks who's baby it is then. Eric reveals she's Brady and Kristen's.

Kristen tells the nurse that she's been looking forward to volunteering to hold babies as she's glad to help. The nurse gives Kristen 30 minutes to hold her and exits the room.

Brady tells Nicole that they never finished their conversation from the other day since they got interrupted by Kristen getting a text from Chad so Nicole hadn't explained why she lied to Eric about going to New York on Basic Black business. Nicole promises they will continue that conversation but says Eric has to be involved because there is a lot to it. Brady hopes it's not bad news since he and Kristen have had their share since last year. Nicole knows how hard things have been since he lost his daughter. Brady talks about trying to find closure but while holding Mackenzie, all he could think about was Rachel and how they would be the same age. Brady states that he and Eric are not brothers by blood but Mackenzie has the same birth mark that Rachel did.

Sarah argues that their baby cannot belong to Brady and Kristen because their baby is dead. Eric clarifies that their baby is dead. Sarah doesn't believe him and asks if he's just trying to stop the wedding. Eric reveals he has proof because Nicole ran a DNA sample. Sarah questions what gave her the right to do that. Eric explains that Nicole got suspicious so she took a sample of the baby and had a lab tech do a DNA test to compare it with Kristen's hair. Eric then shows Sarah the DNA test revealing it's a match. Sarah argues that it doesn't prove anything and that Nicole could've had the tests faked. Sarah wants another test to prove that she is Mickie's mother. Eric informs her that Nicole confronted Dr. Raynor and says he's sorry but it's the truth, adding that Sarah can call her if she wants.

Kayla brings Marlena and John to Steve's hospital room. Steve says he's not up for visitors. John asks if he doesn't recognize them. Steve says he doesn't and asks if he should. John says they hoped so since they have been partners for years and best friends. Steve says he doesn't know them or Kayla. Marlena talks about recovery from brain surgery and says the memory loss could disappear in a few days but they have ways to deal with that. Marlena suggests therapy or hypnosis to help retrieve memories. Steve wants to do hypnosis right now then. Marlena says there is no need to rush. Steve complains that he doesn't know who he is so he wants to do this right now. Marlena then begins the process by asking him questions. Steve mentions not knowing who he is. Marlena asks him what he does recall but Steve says it's just blank. Marlena encourages him to focus on Kayla. Steve admits she seems familiar but he doesn't remember being married to her.

Sarah tells Eric that Dr. Raynor is a friend, a colleague, and a good doctor so there's no way she would let a mistake like their babies being switched happen. Eric reveals it wasn't an accident as the babies were switched on purpose. Sarah asks who they were switched by.

Nicole acts surprised about Mackenzie having the same birth mark as Rachel and asks if he thinks it's more than a coincidence. Brady says he doesn't know and admits the thought had crossed his mind that maybe Eric's baby is actually theirs. Brady knows it's a stretch but he keeps thinking about the night when the babies were born at the same time in the same hospital. Brady says they were in the same nursery so he asks if it's crazy to think there might have been a baby switch. Nicole says it's not crazy but Brady talks about how hospitals have safeguards to prevent these kind of things. Brady knows it's not healthy to have these thoughts over a birth mark. Nicole says no one would blame him for going there. Brady swears it's all he could think about while holding Mackenzie. Brady says losing Rachel has destroyed Kristen and he doesn't know if she will ever recover.

Justin comments on Mackenzie having a cute outfit and making the perfect maid of honor. Justin remarks that he's never noticed her birth mark before. Justin suggests they get the ceremony started. Xander says he'd love to but Sarah is not here. Justin hopes she's not getting cold feet. Xander says she's just visiting Maggie at the prison but she should've been back by now so he hopes nothing is wrong.

Eric informs Sarah that Xander switched the babies. Sarah argues that none of this makes any sense. Eric explains that Xander switched their little girl with Brady and Kristen's then paid Dr. Raynor to keep the secret. Sarah argues that Xander loves Mackenzie and brought her back to her. Sarah thinks back to that moment and commenting on her almost looking like a different baby. Sarah realizes it's true and breaks down crying.

Marlena leaves Steve's room and tells John and Kayla that she couldn't get Steve to remember his past life but he did say that Kayla seemed familiar. Marlena encourages that Steve is in there and she just has to find a way to reach him. Kayla says she can do that and thanks her as she heads back to his room. John hoped this nightmare would be over when the chip was removed. John asks if they are going to get Steve back. Marlena says she hopes so but if they do, it's only going to happen if Kayla can reach him.

Steve tells Kayla the hypnosis was a bust. Kayla doesn't think they should give up and says she will let him rest now but there's something she wants to do before he drifts off. Kayla wants to tell him the story of Steve and Kayla. Steve says he definitely wants to hear that and asks how they met. Kayla says she was sweet and innocent while Steve was pretty much the opposite. Steve asks if he just won her over and they fell in love. Kayla admits it wasn't quite that simple as they faced so many challenges. Kayla says seeing him in this bed reminds her of when she was in the hospital after losing her hearing and her voice. Kayla says she was afraid of losing their connection but Steve took sign language to communicate with her. Kayla adds that she couldn't speak but they still planned to get married on a boat. Steve comments that it sounds romantic. Kayla calls it incredible but she couldn't speak her vows until Steve brought it out of her so now she wants to do the same for him. Kayla knows Steve is in there somewhere and pleads for him to come back to her.

Xander tells Justin that Sarah isn't texting back. Justin suggests she could be driving. Xander agrees that she must be on her way back. Xander notes that Victor is also at the prison with Maggie so he'll check in with him. Xander calls Victor and asks him if Sarah is with he and Maggie but she's not. Xander then hangs up and tells Justin that she left over two hours ago. Xander wonders why she hasn't come home.

Sarah tells Eric about the moment where she didn't think it was the same baby but Xander assured that it was. Eric says he was lying. Sarah asks if he's told Kristen and Brady. Eric says no as he wanted her to know first and he wasn't going to let her marry Xander without knowing what he did. Eric hugs Sarah as she breaks down crying. Sarah then gets a call from Xander but ignores it.

Brady tells Nicole that he's sorry for laying this all on her. Nicole says he doesn't have to apologize. They talk about what she went through with her babies. Brady is glad she got her happy ending, noting that he and Kristen won't have that. Nicole says he doesn't know that. Brady remarks that if there was a baby switch, he wouldn't even want to know about it because then his brother would have to go through this. Brady doesn't want anyone to go through what he's feeling now, let alone his brother. Nicole calls him such a good person who deserves the best. Brady gets a work text and says he has to go deal with it. Brady thanks her for listening and exits. Nicole prays that Eric is breaking the news to Sarah and coming back soon because she doesn't know how much more of this she can take.

The nurse comes to take the baby back from Kristen. Kristen asks for a little more time but the nurse says they have to stay on a schedule. Kristen is afraid of waking her up and asks for ten more minutes. The nurse insists but Kristen pulls away and says she's not taking her.

Eric goes to the Basic Black office and tells Nicole that he broke the news to Sarah. Eric says she didn't want to believe him but he thinks he finally got through to her. Eric says now it's time to start the process of saying goodbye. Eric knows he has to tell Brady. Brady walks back in and asks what he has to tell him.

Xander tells Justin that Sarah is not picking up. Justin tells him not to panic. Xander worries about if something happened and hopes she's alright. Sarah then enters the room staring down Xander.

John tells Marlena that he feels terrible for Kayla because he knows how it felt when Marlena had no memory of their love. Marlena says it was inside of her which is why he was able to reach her and now they know Steve's love of Kayla is inside of him.

Kayla continues telling Steve about their wedding and now she wants to give him the strength and courage to remember what they meant to each other.
