Kayla wants Dr. Rolf to explain to her in medical terms how he made Steve think that he's Stefano. Rolf says Steve doesn't think he's Stefano, he is Stefano. He explains that he distilled Stefano's essence, personality, memories, and his entire brain function then transfer it to a microchip which he then implanted in to Steve's brain. Kayla asks if it is reversible and if he can bring Steve back. Dr. Rolf talks about his work being revolutionary and what this could mean for the future. Kayla asks to see his notes so she can really see his ability. Kayla claims she'd be honored to see it. Dr. Rolf says he shouldn't but supposes one peek won't hut so he shows it to her. Kayla then gets her hands free from the rope tying her to the chair.

At the Brady Pub, Roman finishes a call about finding Kayla. Hattie approaches and asks if there's any word about Kayla. Roman says the police are certain that Stefano has her but he hasn't called in with any demands so they have no idea where he has taken her. Hattie doesn't think he will hurt her. Roman says there is no trace of Steve in that man, so for all intents and purposes it's Stefano DiMera and God knows what he will do.

Kayla tells Dr. Rolf that she's thirsty and asks for water. Dr. Rolf agrees and exits the room. Kayla then gets up and goes to escape but Stefano returns and stops her.

At the hospital, John tells Justin that he thought he'd be at the prison for the execution since he's Ben's attorney. Justin responds that he would be but he has an emergency to deal with as "Steve" has Kayla.

Evan/Christian asks Sonny if he's right about him and Will getting back together. Sonny tells him it just happened. Sonny adds that he had always been honest about where they stand and that he never stopped loving Will. Sonny says they weren't together because he thought he killed his mom but that wasn't true so they are getting back together. Sonny doesn't want to hurt him, saying he's such a good guy. Sonny doesn't know what else to say other than he's sorry. Christian then pulls a gun on Sonny and says he's sorry too. Sonny questions what the hell he is doing.

Ciara argues on the phone with the prison that Ben can't be executed as she found the real killer, David's father Christian Maddox who had been posing as David's nanny Evan, but they hang up on Ciara. Ciara hopes it's not too late.

Marlena meets the warden at the prison as they are preparing for Ben's execution. He remarks that she looks to be the only witness as eeven his lawyer didn't show. Ben is then brought in to the room for the lethal injection. Marlena tells him that she's there for him and encourages him to stay strong. Will arrives and says he's there for him as well.

Kayla tells Stefano to just let her go but he says he can't do that. Stefano remarks that he's glad to see that Justin is willing to cooperate. Stefano adds that Justin seems as smitten with her as Steve was before he inhabited his body. Stefano hopes Justin complies with his terms so he can finally be rid of her.

Hattie encourages Roman that Kayla will be okay. She calls Stefano a homicidal maniac who couldn't even hurt her. Roman thanks her for covering for him at the Pub since Kayla was kidnapped. Hattie calls it a thanks for all he's done for her. Roman says it's nice to have someone in his corner. Hattie says she's always in his corner. Roman kisses her on the cheek and thanks her again. Hattie asks what that was. Roman says if she has to ask, maybe he shouldn't have done it.

Stefano has Dr. Rolf tie Kayla back to the chair. Rolf apologizes as Stefano says he almost lost their only bargaining chip. Dr. Rolf explains that Kayla had fooled him. Kayla mocks Rolf's medical expertise. Stefano says he owes Rolf his life. Kayla asks why he's doing this when Justin gave him the money. Stefano responds that money was never what this was about as he came back to Salem for Marlena. Kayla calls him crazy for thinking he has a shot with her. Kayla assures that Marlena will never love him because she loves John and always will.

Justin explains to John that "Steve" showed up at his door demanding 10 million dollars for Kayla's return. Justin talks about it being weird as he was Steve but his voice and mannerisms were pure Stefano. Justin says he didn't want to risk going to the cops but then Stefano said his second demand that he wants more than money, is Marlena.

Sonny asks Christian to put the gun down. Christian tells him he doesn't need to be scared of him as he would never hurt him but he needed to get his attention. Sonny says there was an attraction between them and maybe if things were different with Will, they could have a real shot but Will is the love of his life and his husband so they are getting back together. Christian says this isn't about Sonny breaking up with him but he's in trouble and he needs his help.

Marlena hugs Will and says she's so happy to see him and relieved that he's free. Marlena adds that she's touched that he's here for Ben. Will admits he didn't expect to become friends with the man who killed him, but being his cellmate made prison almost bearable. Marlena is glad they were able to help each other through it. Will declares he will now be here for Ben one last time. Ben then gets strapped in to receive the lethal injection.

Roman tells Hattie that he's sorry if the kiss made her uncomfortable. Hattie brings up when she was pretending to be Marlena and Roman said he was proud of her. Roman says that was incredibly unselfish and brave to put herself in danger to help them. Hattie reminds him that he kissed her on the cheek then too, pointing out that he's now done that too so she wants to know if it means something. Roman asks if it has to mean something. Hattie says because of her strong feelings for him, she keeps thinking of his last kiss so she wanted to ask because he said there was no future for them. Hattie asks if he's changed his mind.

Stefano tells Kayla that Marlena will come around. Kayla calls him delusional to think that Justin would trade Marlena for her. Stefano says Justin loves Kayla while he loves Marlena so it's a fair trade to him. Kayla argues that Justin would never sacrifice Marlena that way. Stefano says Victor is as ruthless as they come and would stop at nothing to protect who he loves so perhaps that flows in his nephew's veins too. Kayla says that Justin is nothing like Victor but Stefano says he's counting on it and she should too if she ever wants to see him again.

Justin tells John that he's not suggesting that they trade Marlena for Kayla but they have to make Stefano believe that he's cooperating until they can rescue Kayla. John assures that he gets it as he's dealt with Stefano for decades. John says Justin has every right to be scared. Justin responds that he lost Adrienne so he can't lose Kayla. John assures it won't happen because he has a plan.

Marlena and Will watch as Ben is raised on the board he is strapped to for injection. Ciara runs in, yelling to stop as they can't go through with this. The warden questions how she got in and calls for the guard. Ciara tells them that they have DNA evidence that puts the real killer at the scene of the crime. Ciara tells Ben that she found David's father. Marlena questions there being proof which Ciara confirms. Marlena says they have to hear her out. Ciara explains that Ben did not kill Jordan, a man named Christian Maddox did and he's the father of Jordan's baby. Ciara adds that the cops thought the DNA was David's but it belongs to his father and they searched the criminal database to find a perfect match. Marlena questions finding him. Ciara reveals that Christian had been living as Evan which Will questions.

Sonny asks what Christian means about being in trouble and what happened. Christian informs him that Rafe fired him. Sonny asks why when he's so good with David. Sonny asks if it's because he found out he had a gun. Christian responds that it is about David as they found something in his background check. Christian says he did his best to hide it from Rafe but when he discovered it, he let him go. Sonny asks what he found. Christian reveals that Rafe learned that he changed his name because he couldn't let Rafe know who he really was. Sonny doesn't get it. Christian then informs Sonny that he is David's father.

Roman tells Hattie that the kiss was just a show of appreciation. Hattie felt the first kiss could have been spur of the moment but she thought the second one was starting to mean something. Hattie says he knows how she feels about him so she asks if there's more to it. John and Justin arrive, saying they need Hattie's help. Hattie says she's in the middle of something but Justin says this can't wait.

Kayla tells Stefano that Marlena will never love him unless Dr. Rolf gave her a personality changeover like he did with him. Stefano doesn't care what she thinks and declares that he will have Marlena and God help anyone who stands in his way. Dr. Rolf argues that Kayla raises a valid point since she was able to transform Hope into a Princess so why not transform Marlena into a Queen.

Sonny says Evan is David's nanny who Sonny has been seeing. Ciara reveals he's actually David's father. The Warden says he's heard enough and calls the story a desperate attempt to stall the execution. Marlena argues that they can't go forward when there is doubt about Ben's guilt. He declares only the governor can stop this so they are moving forward. Ciara asks if he doesn't care that he has the wrong man. He responds that Ben was convicted by a jury and upheld three times. Will asks what if that was wrong and this new evidence changes everything. Marlena asks if "Evan" knows his secret is out. Ciara confirms that Rafe fired him and then he fled with David. Will asks what if he hurts him. Marlena doesn't think he will as his father. Ciara says that Rafe put out an APB and they are looking for him now. Will reveals that he knows exactly where "Evan" is as he just saw him with Sonny.

Sonny talks about how much Christian loves David and how much time he spent with him, relating to how Lani felt about taking care of David. Sonny says he may love David like a son. Christian clarifies that he's not saying he's like a son, he is his flesh and blood. Christian informs Sonny that he and Jordan had a child together and David is his son.

Roman and Hattie sit with Justin and John. Justin explains that he is sure Kayla is safe as Stefano let him speak to her. Jusitn adds that he has agreed to give Stefano the 10 million dollars he demanded but it turns out, he wants Marlena. Roman asks how much more he can put her through. John is sure that if Marlena knew, she'd do whatever she could to help Kayla but right now she's watching Ben's execution at the prison. Hattie asks about them needing her help. John knows it's a lot to ask but hoped Hattie had one last performance in her. Roman questions Hattie pretending to be Marlena again. Hattie says if they need her help, she's in. Justin thanks her and says she has no idea how much this means to him. Roman stops them and says nobody wants Kayla home safe more than him, but Stefano almost killed Hattie last time. John says they don't plan on putting her in harm's way but Roman argues that's exactly what they are going to do. Roman says it doesn't feel right to put Hattie right back in the lion's den.

Dr. Rolf believes he can give Stefano his queen of the night. Kayla says he has to be kidding. Stefano has no doubt that Rolf is capable but he wants Marlena to choose him of her own free will. Stefano doesn't want to be with a robot impersonating Marlena, he wants her. Stefano says that love is when two souls connect which is what he and Marlena are meant to share. Kayla argues that obsession is not love. Stefano calls it very real. Dr. Rolf appreciates his desire. Stefano tells him that he doesn't need his help in this situation. Dr. Rolf brings up how strongly Marlena has resisted him in the past so he suggests different ways to coax things along. Rolf says he doesn't have to turn her in to a different person but make her more receptive to his charm and advances. Kayla calls them insane.

Sonny questions Christian sleeping with Jordan. Christian says he told him that he was in a relationship out West that ended badly. Sonny assumed he was talking about being with a man. Christian felt it was easier to let him think that. Sonny questions David being his son. Christian explains that he has been with both men and women and he was attracted to Jordan from the moment they met. Sonny can't believe it. Christian talks about how Jordan was beautiful and there was something offbeat about her that he really fell for. Sonny brings up how Jordan almost killed Ciara and Ben. Christian knows she wasn't the most stable person but it wasn't until the end, that he finally realized what a psycho she truly was. Sonny asks what he did.

Will explains that "Evan" came by to see Sonny but he didn't have David with him and he walked by his car on the way out. Will worries that he left them alone together and tries to call Sonny. The warden says he's had enough as they scheduled an execution so this stunt is not going to delay it any longer. Marlena argues against executing an innocent man. The warden says he doesn't decide guilt and innocence. Marlena says if they go ahead, there is no turning back. Marlena suggests contacting Rafe but the Warden says he has a directive. Marlena tells Will and Ciara to go ahead to warn Sonny about what's going on while she stays with Ben. Ciara tells Marlena that she's counting on her. Ciara encourages Ben not to lose hope because she's going to find Christian Maddox and make him admit that he killed Jordan. Ciara swears this is not the end for Ben. Ben says he loves her and thanks her. Ciara and Will then exit with a cop.

Justin tells Roman that they don't have a lot of options right now. John worries that they are running out of time. Roman tells them to figure out another way to save Kayla but they can't put Hattie's life at risk again as Kayla wouldn't want that either. Hattie says it's sweet of him to be protective but she wants to help and Kayla doesn't deserve this. Hattie insists she can handle Stefano. John points out that she did before while Roman points out that she barely got away as Stefano almost strangled her to death so they can't ask her to go through that again. Hattie assures that she can do this and she really wants to help. Justin says it's Hattie's call to make.

Marlena argues that The Warden can't go through with this since with new evidence, he has to put the execution on hold. He responds that he hasn't seen any evidence and questions taking Ben's girlfriend's word. He declares that the time for new evidence was at his trial and he was convicted. Marlena points out that convictions are overturned all the time. He says Ben appealed three times. Marlena wants to reach out to the governor. He wishes her luck in getting him to take that call. The Warden declares that the execution is continuing as planned and orders the doctor to proceed as planned. Ben screams that they can't do this. Marlena brings up that Abe knows the Governor so she will call him right now.

Christian tells Sonny that he didn't do anything as they broke up and Jordan moved away so he didn't even know she was pregnant at the time because she never told him. Sonny asks how he found out. Christian says he saw pictures on social media so he tracked her down to Salem and found out she was living with Rafe. Sonny doesn't understand why he didn't just announce himself as David's father instead of taking a fake name and a position as a nanny. Christian argues that no court would let him have his son because he has a criminal record. Sonny asks what his crimes were. Christian responds that all that matters is that he did what he had to do to be with his son. Sonny says it was all a lie. Christian argues that his relationship with David is real and he didn't think it could get any better until he met Sonny and saw how perfect of a family they could become. Christian declares now everything is falling apart so he needs Sonny's help as he needs enough money to leave Salem with his son. Sonny stops him and asks where David is.

Roman appreciates Hattie wanting to help his sister Kayla but says neither of them could live with themselves if something happened to her. Hattie insists that she will be fine. Roman calls it a bad plan since they already had her impersonate Marlena before. John says he's not saying that Stefano won't figure it out eventually but it will buy them some time. Justin says it could also force Stefano to meet with them. Roman questions using Hattie as bait. Justin says he's only considering it because Kayla's life is hanging in the balance. Justin then gets a call from Stefano, who asks if he's reached out to Marlena. Justin claims that he has. Stefano warns that his patience is wearing thin and asks if they have a deal. Stefano declares that he will release Kayla if Marlena agrees to go away with him.

Christian tells Sonny that David is safe. Sonny asks what that means and where he is. Christian says he can't tell him that right now. Sonny says he believes him and understands why he lied but argues that he can't leave town with David. Sonny tells him to go explain himself to Rafe and the authorities. Christian shouts that they won't understand and he can't lose his son again. Christian asks Sonny for enough money for a fresh start since he has plenty to spare. Sonny questions if this was about his money. Christian says no and that he hates asking because he really cared about him, he just thought Sonny cared enough about him now to help him. Will and Ciara rush into the room but Sonny warns that he has a gun. Christian raises the gun towards Ciara and Will. Ciara goes over Christian's real identity. Sonny informs them that he just told him so he knows. Ciara reveals that Christian wasn't just with Jordan, he killed her and let Ben take the fall. Christian responds that she shouldn't have come here.

Marlena thanks Abe and tells him to hurry as there's not much time left. She hangs up and informs Ben that Abe is contacting the governor. The Warden repeats that he's not waiting any longer. Marlena says he has to wait until they hear from Abe or the governor. He responds that it's his job to oversee this execution. He orders the doctor to explain to Ben what is about to happen to him, so he goes over the three injections he will be receiving.

Stefano asks Justin for an answer. Before Justin can respond, Kayla shouts in the background for him not to risk Marlena's life for her's. Hattie tells Stefano that she's Marlena. Stefano asks if it's really Marlena. Hattie asks him not to hurt Kayla. Stefano responds that he has no intention of hurting anyone. Hattie says they will do the switch, Kayla for her, and asks what they need to do.

Sonny asks if it's true that Christian killed Jordan. Christian tells him not to listen to Ciara. Ciara insists it's true as some of the DNA the police found belonged to him so the evidence is indisputable. Will confirms, calling Christian a murderer. Christian argues that Jordan tried to take his son away from him and they all knew she was crazy so he just wanted to protect David. Will tells him it's over as Rafe, the police, and they all know everything. Christian warns that they know what he's capable of then as he raises his gun.

Ben tries to argue that they can't proceed with the execution, pleading to give Ciara a chance to prove it. The Warden gets a call from the Governor. Marlena tells Ben that Abe got through to the Governor so she's sure it's going to be alright. The Warden hangs up and announces that the Governor spoke to Abe, who made a very impassioned plea on behalf of Ben but without proof of new evidence, the Governor has decided not to stop the execution so they are moving forward as planned. He then orders the doctor to administer the first injection as Marlena says she's so sorry.
