Adam: I just got off the phone with rey. He, chelsea, and connor made it to minneapolis in one piece last night.

Victor: So they're settled in in the hotel?

Adam: Uh-huh. He's gonna drive them to the hospital around 10:00, and while chelsea and connor are meeting with anita, he's gonna check with her doctor to see how long the recovery will take.

Victor: So he seems to have things under control. Have you talked with connor?

Adam: He slept in from the long drive, but I suspect he's gonna call me when he wakes up. I plan to visit on the weekends while they're gone until anita can be on her own.

Victor: Son, I got to tell you, these have been a difficult few days, but you've handled things with chelsea very well and you've done right by your son.

Adam: Well, thank you, dad. I appreciate that. Glad you were able to get over your concerns about the trip.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: Oh. Hello, adam.

Adam: Nikki.

Victor: What's up, sweetheart?

Nikki: Well, I'm sure you've heard the news that victoria's making a big announcement this morning with ashland. I'm just a bit nervous what your reaction will be.

Victoria: Oh, and one last thing -- the press release. See if you can tweak the language a bit, make it -- i don't know -- a little more momentous. Yes, exactly. Okay, thanks. Oh!

[ Chuckles ] Hey. Good morning.

Ashland: It sure is.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

[ Intercom buzzes ] Uh, excuse me. What is it? No, tell him no. I don't care what publication he's with. No one is getting an interview until the live stream is over. That's right. Okay. Oh, and please hold all my calls. Whew! It has been a madhouse around here this morning.

Ashland: Which started when? Was the sun even up?

Victoria: Well, the kids were staying at billy's last night, and I just couldn't sleep because I was too excited, so i came in a little early.

Ashland: On the way up here, I strolled through the executive wing. The energy's off the charts.

Victoria: I know! We have created quite a stir.

Ashland: Have we now?

Victoria: You know, even the employees who aren't in the know can tell that something big is about to happen.

Ashland: Good.

Victoria: What about you? Are you ready for this?

Ashland: Well, I can't say that I've been ready for anything that's transpired over the last few months, but ready or not, we are going to seize the narrative, shove that video of me gasping for air right off the internet.

Victoria: And return the focus to where it should be -- the life that you've accomplished and this incredible legacy that you've built that's gonna continue.

Ashland: Thank you for being exactly what I needed at the exact moment that I needed it.

Tara: You saw the news alert, too?

Jack: Yeah. Have you spoken to ashland since last night?

Tara: Not since that horrible video was posted. I have to wonder if this announcement is to address it or try and distract from it.

Jack: Either way, it's a terrible intrusion into your privacy. This just hours after you told my family how upset you were that your private life was no longer your own after you married ashland.

Tara: Guess I ought to be used to it by now.

Jack: Well, at least billy wasn't involved in this media frenzy -- for once.

Tara: It was humiliating the way ashland spoke to me in that video. I hate that people saw how he treated me in front of my son, no less.

Jack: I am very sorry you were put through this.

Tara: I just want to be clear about something -- that one ugly moment was not the whole of our marriage. If it had been that awful, i would have left a lot sooner.

Jack: Let me make something equally clear. I do not judge either one of you. I'm sure this has all put a terrible strain on ashland, especially when these rumors are out there about his health, and judging from that video, there's a good chance they could be true.

Billy: Hey.

Lily: Hello. Did you get the kids to their swimming lesson on time?

Billy: I did, just in the nick of time. We had to go by victoria's house and get katie's swimsuit because she forgot to put it in her bag.

Lily: Oh, oopsie.

Billy: Yeah. It's great that we're getting all this extra time with the kids -- I love them, of course -- but, you know, her little fixation on locke is causing other things to fall through the cracks, if you know what I mean.

Lily: Well, I'm sure the kids have left things here before, as well. I mean, we're all leading busy lives. Not fair to blame it all on victoria.

Billy: No, that's not really what I'm doing. It's just the point is she's giving all her attention to this guy and other aspects of her life are suffering because of it.

Lily: Oh, I'm sorry, is there a limit to how much attention we should give to a guy? Maybe I should cut back.

Billy: No.

Lily: Okay, clearly, victoria's absentmindedness isn't really the issue. So why don't you tell me what's actually bothering you? I've been telling everyone, the secret to great teeth...

Victor: What's this thing about victoria's announcement?

Nikki: Darling, please just tell me that whatever happens, you won't use it as an excuse to postpone our trip.

Adam: Hmm? Why would you do that? Don't you two already have tickets to that concert in italy?

Nikki: Yes, adam, we do, but with all of the upheaval with chelsea the last few days, victor was worried about leaving connor. But now that he's in minnesota with his mother, that is no longer an issue.

Adam: Well, I'm with you, nikki. I think you and dad have earned some time away. Everything's good with the rest of the family, and I have everything covered at newman media. I think it would be a perfect time to get away.

Nikki: Also, I have spoken to nicholas, and he has suggested that we stop in london to join him and noah before we go on to milan to see summer, and then we can all spend time together.

Victor: Wait a minute, instead of on our way back?

Nikki: Yeah.

Victor: Hmm.

Adam: Remember how we asked noah to do some graphic work? Probably would be to easier to persuade him in person.

Victor: Yeah, I guess good point.

Nikki: I hope this means i can count on you to follow through with our plans.

Victor: My baby, I have my priorities in order.

Tara: Let's not dwell on what happened with ash when so much of yesterday was just lovely.

Jack: Yes, the abbott family meet and greet with harrison.

Tara: You and your sisters were so sweet with him, even billy made a real effort. You opened your hearts and treated us like members of your family.

Jack: Which you are now.

Tara: That means so much, especially now. My little boy is on the verge of losing the man that he loves as his father.

Kyle: Something wrong?

Tara: Oh, everything's fine.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Jack: Ooh. Uh, sorry, I have to take this. Excuse me. Marty, I've been expecting your call. Yeah.

Kyle: Hey, I know you've been worried about harrison, how he'll cope when ashland dies.

Tara: I try to put it out of my mind, but it's all I can think about. What that poor child's gonna go through. And if we can make it easier for him, if that's even possible.

Kyle: If there's anything i can do to make it easier for you, I hope you'll tell me so i can help.

Tara: That's so considerate of you, kyle. Thank you. Harrison is gonna grow up with such incredible role models. You and jack.

Billy: Let's not make this into something bigger than it is, okay? I am just simply a little frustrated that my morning was more hectic than I wanted it to be.

Lily: But usually you take those things in stride, so is it this big announcement that has you on edge?

Billy: I don't know why this announcement would have me on edge. I mean, whatever victoria and locke let the world know, it'll be good for us because it's news.

Lily: Right, okay, so purely hypothetical...

Billy: Okay, shoot.

Lily: What if this big proclamation is that they're getting married?

Billy: I was joking when i said that.

Lily: Then why aren't you laughing?

Billy: Because it's absurd.

Lily: I'm sorry, why is it absurd? He's very handsome and charming, and he's successful.

Billy: He's a ruthless piece of work that messes with people's minds. Does that remind you of somebody else in victoria's life?

Lily: Victor.

Billy: Yes, and she can't stand that behavior in her own father, okay? Locke is not her type.

Lily: Oh, really? Okay. So what's victoria's type?

Billy: Oh, I'm sorry, miss doctor, I'm not going there, okay? I have to finish getting ready for work.

Lily: Uh-huh.

Victoria: "The rain in spain," et cetera, et cetera. Okay, it's good. It's good to go. The camera's good. The mic level is good.

[ Sighs ]

Ashland: The number in this corner?

Victoria: Oh, well, that is the number of people who have already signed in to watch us as soon as we start live-streaming.

Ashland: Ah, that's impressive. I think we're about to become the center of gravity in the business world. I don't see any reason to pause, so if you want to get started.

Victoria: Oh, wait, before we begin, there's something I want to say. I just -- I want to let you know how much this moment means to me and how moved I am by your faith in me. This is by far the most exciting journey that I have ever been on, and, I mean, I know we've only just begun... I'm -- I'm really grateful to you for entrusting me with your life's work. And it's such an honor. I'll never lose sight of that.

Ashland: I need you to know that my decision isn't a fluke or an accident. And this isn't a gift either. I mean, you have earned this through all your hard work and all the tough judgment calls that you have made to get to this point. Don't ever let anybody tell you different.

Victoria: I won't, I promise.

Ashland: Good. Now, you ready?

Victoria: Good morning. I'm victoria newman. I'm ceo of newman enterprises. And joining me today is ashland locke, ceo and chairman...

Lily: Billy, the live stream is on!

Victoria: We have a very special announcement to make today. One that is historic in scope, and we are delighted that you can be joining us for it.

Ashland: Victoria and I met a few months back when I decided to sell cyaxares media. Newman made an offer for my division. While it ultimately went to a different bidder, victoria and i remained in touch. I was impressed with her experience, her poise, and her negotiating savvy. And as we spent more time together, we became better acquainted and we shared business philosophies, which, as it turns out, were remarkably similar.

Sally: Yeah, sure, philosophy. That's what you discussed. Not how pissed you were at your lying, cheating ex.

Ashland: Victoria is a woman of rare talent, blessed with incredible foresight and a top-notch intellect. Now, she is able to translate a vision, put it into a plan of action. She has built on the foundation of her predecessors, and she has shaped the company that she leads into a global powerhouse. And I was rather resentful at one time that I never had the opportunity to recruit such a remarkable executive. But then I realized that it wasn't too late.

Kyle: Is victoria jumping ship?

Victoria: I have the utmost respect for the communications empire that ashland has built from the ground up, especially its commitment to r&d, which has kept it at the forefront of technology. Creativity and innovation are the lifeblood of any company and the key to its survival. And ashland locke understands the importance of being open to new ideas more than any other ceo that I've ever worked with, which is why I am honored and thrilled to announce that newman enterprises and locke communications group will be merging into one company. This will be a merger of equals, with newman's expertise in construction, real estate, manufacturing, and energy directly complemented and enhanced by locke's state-of-the-art communications technology. Sally: Whoa.

Victoria: The benefit of consolidating our two businesses will be very significant, both in the near and long-term future. Billy: I told you.

Lily: You were right. I mean, once again, your instincts were bang on. I mean, victoria wasn't just going after a seat on the board, she was going after his entire empire. And she won.

Billy: You know what this means, don't you? Victoria's not just a player, she's a titan.

Ashland: ...Will be unequaled.

Victoria: Mergers of this size can easily take a year to finalize. However, we have been operating on an accelerated scale, and ashland and I have been negotiating for weeks. We believe that we've reached an agreement that should be satisfactory to both sides. In the end, I've struck a deal that I believe that I can be proud to present to my board of directors. And I think that they will be enthusiastic about the opportunities that this merger will open up for the combined companies.

Jack: Victor, chairman of the newman board, didn't know the first thing about this merger. That is what she's signaling here.

Kyle: Wouldn't a merger of this magnitude require the board to approve it prior to any announcement?

Jack: Victor must have set up something when he was ceo there, gave him some leeway to get whatever he wanted, and victoria's using it to her utmost advantage.

Ashland: Victoria and I are eager to start working together on this bold new venture of ours.

Nikki: Well, I better get to the office. It's gonna be a madhouse.

Victor: Hold on a minute, honey.

Nikki: What?

Victor: You are coo of that company. That means you must have known about this. And yet you told me nothing.

Nikki: Victor, being coo means I am obligated to keep victoria's confidence. You know that.

Victor: From the founder and the chairman of the damn company?

Nikki: Please try to put yourself in my position.

Adam: The live stream is still happening. There's more that's going on.

Victoria: That concludes the business portion of our announcement. And now ashland locke would like to issue a personal statement.

Victor: Well, now, I suppose you know about that as well, right?

Nikki: I might have some idea.

Billy: Here it comes.

Ashland: Many of you have seen a video that began circulating last night. It went viral in a hurry. The footage depicts me in a state of ill health and, unfortunately, ill temper. I find it hard to convey the contempt and disgust that I have for anyone who would exploit a man's private suffering for their personal gain.

Sally: Wait, he can't be talking about the video that i filmed?

Ashland: I do wish to express the thanks for the friends and colleagues who have reached out to express their concern at this difficult time. And now that the video is out there, I feel compelled to address the rumors. I have indeed been diagnosed with a serious illness.

Jack: Then it's true. My poor grandson.

Ashland: The details and my prognosis are not for public consumption, and I would ask that the media and everyone else please respect my desire for privacy during this very difficult time.

Lily: Man, this is so sad. I would not wish this on anyone. I honestly would've preferred a marriage proposal.

Ashland: My condition has compelled me to remove myself from the day-to-day operations at locke communications group. However, I will be on board in an advisory capacity to ensure the safe transition and merger of our companies. Victoria newman will be the ceo of the new company. Her superb leadership skills make her far and away the best choice to take the helm going forward. I have no doubt that she'll be able to guide our combined companies into the future exactly as I would have, but with infinitely more charm and panache. My legacy will be in good hands, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Thank you for your time.

Jack: Wow. I guess it's best that we know ashland's secret is out in the open now. We can protect harrison, make some plans.

Tara: True.

Jack: At the same time, I am absolutely outraged on ashland's behalf. If ever there was a time that a man deserves some dignity and privacy, it's when he's looking at his own mortality. This is -- this is unconscionable. I can't believe it.

Sally: What the hell? How did my deleted video end up online?

Adam: I'm sure we'll be seeing ashland soon, so we can ask him about the news personally. Uh, please offer victoria my sincere congratulations on the deal of a lifetime.

Nikki: I'll be sure to do that. Victor, would you like to convey that same message? I'll take that as a no.

Victor: Did you miss the part where our daughter highlighted the fact that she made this deal without her father's involvement?

Nikki: Oh, no, I think that you might be misinterpreting what she said.

Victor: I'm not misinterpreting a damn thing, sweetheart. The mistake I made is to leave that bylaw in place that allows her to make a major move without consulting the board of directors.

Nikki: I don't know why you would say that. This is the exact reason why you wrote that bylaw to begin with. Merging with ashland's company was an incredible opportunity and needed an executive decision immediately. Victoria did exactly what you would have done, darling. If anything, you should be pleased that she has learned so much from you.

Victor: Our daughter betrayed me. And I won't forget it.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] I understand that you're upset. It is very distressing to know that there is so little connection between you and victoria right now, but that is the result of your choices as well as hers. Victor, call her. Tell her you're proud of her. It's not too late to turn things around.

Billy: Victoria must have been working on this for a while. Totally under the radar. There's no way you put a deal like this together in one or two weeks.

Lily: Well, she was smart. She built her personal relationship with ashland first.

Billy: Yeah, you think that's smart, huh?

Lily: Yeah. I mean, I think some people will be cynical and say that, you know, she's exploiting him, but I couldn't help but notice the way they interacted with each other.

Billy: What do you mean by that?

Lily: Well, as brief as the live stream was, I mean, couldn't help but notice through their body language there's this mutual trust there. Which, you know, ashland doesn't have with us and definitely not with victor or adam.

Billy: No one can trust adam.

Lily: So clearly, we never stood a chance being appointed guardians of his legacy. Look, I really hope that you're not too disappointed, because if you're wanting to be, you know, corporate master of the universe now, just talk to jill and tell her that you want more challenges at chancellor.

Billy: Excuse me? Don't even go there, okay? I love our partnership. You are stuck with me.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Well, I'm glad to hear that, but I think it's very telling.

Billy: How so?

Lily: Well, I think that if you didn't want more responsibility, you wouldn't have tried to go after locke communications group. Unless you just like the thrill of going head-to-head with the newmans.

Jack: Sally?

Sally: Jack!

Jack: May I join you or are you waiting for someone?

Sally: No, all by my lonesome. Have a seat.

Jack: Thanks.

Sally: Although I can't stay long 'cause lauren's expecting me back at the office.

Jack: I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna be late to work this morning. I think half this town was glued to victoria's announcement.

Sally: I saw that. It's pretty amazing. It's gonna do big things for genoa city, isn't it? I mean, they didn't say, but i assume that the headquarters for the combined operation will be here, especially since ashland's stepping back...or down or whatever he said.

Jack: Listen, there's something I want to ask you. Yesterday, when we were at the park, I left to get food. You were still there, right? I'm -- did you see anyone taking video of ashland and tara?

Sally: No. I mean, I hadn't heard anything about a video being posted online until ashland just brought it up.

Jack: Well, tara is very upset about it.

Sally: Yeah, I can imagine. I mean, she can't even take her kid to the park without somebody hiding in the bushes with a camera. It is very disgusting.

Jack: I could not agree more.

Victoria: Well, the deed is done.

[ Sighs ] Peace and quiet.

Ashland: Well, let's enjoy it while it lasts. Once we turn our phones back on and enter the real world, the press is going to pounce on us.

Victoria: Oh, yeah, they're gonna have a lot of questions about your illness since you didn't really provide them any information.

Ashland: Pack of vultures, hmm? You think I'm gonna hand-feed them? They're gonna have to work for it the old-fashioned way, you know, by rummaging through my trash, bribing my medical team.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Right. Why would we take away all their fun?

Ashland: Precisely. You know, the truth is, at this point, I just want to concentrate on the most positive aspects of my life. And you, young lady, are at the top of that list.

Victoria: Thank you so much for all of the flattering things that you said during the live stream.

Ashland: You know, it wasn't flattery, victoria. I meant every word I said. I hope you realize that this merger isn't about protecting my legacy, this is also about helping you enhance yours because you deserve all the respect and credit in the world.

Victoria: Thank you.

Ashland: Well, I, um, guess it's time for me to run the gauntlet from here back to my hotel suite. Wish me luck.

Victoria: Oh, ashland, wait. Don't do that. Why don't you come home with me instead? Ugh, there's that cute guy from 12c.

Ashland: Are you inviting me to lunch?

Victoria: No. I'm inviting you to stay at my house while we launch this new company. It's a much better option than the grand phoenix, and you won't have to contend with the press that will be camped out in the lobby. I have plenty of room, and, i mean, harrison can come over and spend the night. I'm sure that he would get along well with my kids.

Ashland: But how are you going to explain it to them?

Victoria: Johnny and katie, I mean, they know that I have a new friend.

Ashland: Victoria, that's a very generous offer, but --

Victoria: It's not generous at all. I like being with you. I mean, I want to spend more time with you. I -- I want to wake up with you in the morning. I think, actually, that I might be falling for you. I, um -- I heard what you said about -- you know, about not getting attached, but, um, i just think it's too late.

Ashland: Victoria, you're romanticizing the situation.

Victoria: But I really --

Ashland: The reality is, is that I'm going to die, possibly within months. And my condition is gonna continue to deteriorate. Now, why would you want to subject your kids to that? Moreover, you shouldn't have to witness that.

Victoria: I should be able to decide that for myself.

Ashland: No, no, no, no. Things have gone too far. I should've known better. I have to go back to new york.

Kyle: [ Sighs ] How are you doing?

Tara: Well, in one sense, things will be easier now. No more pretending that we don't know about ashland's situation.

Kyle: Yeah, well, he didn't actually come out and say he was dying.

Tara: No, but anyone who knows him is aware that that's what it would take for him to hand over his empire to a relative stranger.

Kyle: Was it hard for you to hear him talk about victoria like that?

Tara: Obviously, he needs to put his affairs in order, and if victoria can help do that and set his mind at ease, it'd alleviate some of my guilt for not being there in the end. I do hope that she'll understand and honor ashland's wishes when it comes to harrison.

Kyle: Victoria's trustworthy. I don't think we have anything to worry about there.

Tara: He did say that he was revising his will. I just worry that someone unscrupulous might try and weigh in and take advantage.

Kyle: I've known victoria for a long time. She's not the type of person to disinherit a child. Besides, whatever happens with ashland's estate, harrison will always be taken care of. He's an abbott.

Tara: Something I'm thankful for every day.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Oh, I forgot. I have a meeting. I got to go.

Kyle: Tara, it'll be good for you to have a distraction from everything that's going on with ashland.

Adam: Connor wanted me to tell you that he says hello to you and nikki. He's just about to go see anita. He seems happy.

Victor: Well, I'm glad someone is having a good day.

Adam: Yeah. Seems victoria has got the jump on us with ashland. While we were preoccupied with chelsea, she was laser-focused on locke. But at least she kept it all in the family.

Victor: What's the matter with you, boy?

Adam: What do you mean?

Victor: First you forgive billy abbott for running that exposé. And then you forgive chelsea for framing you for attempted murder. And now you shrug it off that a major business rival -- your sister, no less -- beat you in a major deal. What's the matter with you? Lost your killer instinct? Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete,

Billy: Thank you. I can only guess what you're reading.

Jack: Did you see the announcement? What am I saying? Of course you did.

Billy: Yeah, I saw. What do you think?

Jack: I found it stunning, start to finish. Did you see this coming?

Billy: It crossed my mind that she was up to something along these lines, but I was still shocked when I saw it.

Jack: You don't sound too thrilled.

Billy: Well, I'm thrilled for victoria. It's a heck of a coup, and she's really giving it to her father in this kind of way, so, uh, that's always a good thing.

Jack: So what's the problem?

Billy: The way she looked at him. I know that look. Up until this point, I thought whatever was going on between them had more to do with business than anything else, but...I'm afraid she actually likes the guy. Which is -- it's not a good thing, jack, because it's dead in the water from the beginning for many reasons, but mostly because the guy is sick and he's possibly dying.

Jack: Okay, I guess that's one way of looking at it.

Billy: Oh, is there another way to look at it?

Jack: Well, I just don't see anything wrong with trying to be there for someone in their final hour, trying to give them a little bit of joy, a little bit of comfort. I certainly don't begrudge the man some happiness.

Billy: Yeah. I got somewhere to be. Good to see you, jack.

Adam: Dad, you have nothing to worry about. I have not lost my competitive streak, and I still plan to make a play for locke's company. Just right now, it's not the right time.

Victor: You're right, son, because it's too damn late.

Adam: This merger is a mammoth undertaking. There is no guarantee that it's gonna go smoothly, especially since locke and victoria rushed into it. I mean, she is so eager to impress you, I suspect that she bit off more than she can chew.

Victor: You think so, do you?

Adam: Also, locke, he could have all the intentions in the world of helping her with the transition, but the reality is he's gonna be so distracted with his own health issues, he might not even be able to participate in high-level business dealings.

[ Scoffs ] I give this six months. I bet my sister will be ruing the day that she took this on. In the meantime, I'm going to be doing everything I can to make sure newman media is ready to seize any opportunity that comes our way.

Victoria: Ashland, why would you run back to new york city? I happen to know that you don't want to be alone right now, and you shouldn't be alone right now.

Ashland: What I don't want to do is to drag you down with me.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Would you just please give me a little more credit? I know what I'm doing. And I have a tendency to get what I want.

[ Chuckles ] So you should just give in now because resistance is futile.

Ashland: I thought I was the one who made jokes about serious things.

Victoria: What if I'm not joking right now? I...I want what -- what you bring to my life. Maybe I can't have it forever. Maybe I can't even have it for very long, but I'll take what i can get and I'll make the most of it. You'll stay with me, won't you?

Ashland: [ Sighs ] God forgive me. I will.

Tara: I'm here. What's so urgent?

Sally: How did the video that I took of you and ashland wind up on the internet?

Tara: Relax. No one knows you took it.

Sally: No, you relax. I don't want any part of this, and I don't even understand how it happened, because after i showed you that video, you acted like you were embarrassed by it, you deleted it off my phone, but apparently you sent yourself a copy before you did that.

Tara: Yes, I did, 'cause it occurred to me in the moment that that video might be useful to me. And it was.
