Episode #12139 ~ Sally gets surprising news. Summer asks Billy for a favor. Kyle won't back down.

Kyle: Dad, I tried everything I could think of to change her mind about breaking up with me, but it didn't work. She's moving to italy right away.

Jack: Oh, no.

Kyle: Trying to get in touch with her this morning, but she won't return my calls.

Jack: Kyle, I'm so sorry. I hate to see you going through this.

Kyle: I don't know what to do. How can I just let her go?

Summer: So I'm thinking i should take half of my shoes and leave the rest here since italy has some of the best leather in the world. That's where you get your shoes and your bags.

Phyllis: That's for sure.

Nick: You know what? I asked your mom if she wanted to come with us. You know, we could all fly over to europe together on the newman jet. It'd be fun.

Phyllis: And then I told your dad that it should just be the two of you because I didn't want summer to think that we were trying to gang up on her and talk her out of doing this.

Nick: Nobody's trying to talk her out of anything.

Summer: Okay, good, 'cause summer is still right here.

Phyllis: Alright, so I'll put all of your winter coats and your skis and your boots in a box and put them away.

Summer: No, no, I'm gonna take them with me now.

Phyllis: You want them now?

Summer: Yeah, I mean, this isn't a trial run. Milan is where my life is gonna be. It's gonna be my home, my career. Okay, guys, no, seriously, don't do that. Do not sit here and pretend that you're supporting me while secretly hoping that I'll cave and change my mind. That is the last thing that i need right now. Please.

Victor: Well, at least our granddaughter's kind enough to carve out some time to say goodbye to her grandparents before she leaves for europe.

Nikki: Yes. First noah and now summer going off to europe to pursue their passions.

Victor: Yeah. Remember last time victoria left? You know, we weren't very happy about that. This makes me kind of sad, as well. But at least summer's on good terms with her family.

Nikki: Yeah. But what bothers me is how abruptly this all happened. It makes me wonder why she was so eager to take that job.

Victor: Sweetheart, finding out that your fiancé has a 3-year-old son with a woman who ain't gonna go anywhere would make anyone run.

Nikki: That's a lot to contend with. But to give up everything? I just hope she made this decision for the right reasons.

Phyllis: Uh, listen, summer, we're supportive. It's just...you know, happening so fast. Give us a chance to get used to it, please.

Summer: Okay, look, i understand, but change is good. Yeah, change is growth -- that's what you always say, right?

Nick: [ Chuckles lightly ] You were listening?

Summer: Look, you guys, i know that this is a big move and it might not be easy, but great things rarely are. So I expect that I will be learning and growing more than i ever have in my entire life.

Phyllis: That's a good way to look at it.

Summer: Hey, um, can you call the storage company and make sure that everything in my unit is packed and just ready to go, please?

Nick: Sure.

Tara: Let's be clear with each other. Shall we, summer? I hate misunderstandings.

Summer: Alright.

Tara: If you don't take this job and leave the country, i will make sure kyle never sees harrison again.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Kyle: I've been going over and over it in my mind, trying to make sense of this. Why would summer throw away what we have after we've come so far, gotten so close to having everything we ever wanted?

Jack: Kyle, I have been where you are -- asking myself the same questions over and over again. Sometimes, son, there are just too many obstacles.

Kyle: No, dad, with all due respect, I refuse to just accept that. I've got to try to talk to summer one last time.

Kyle: Summer. Oh, um, hi. Is she over here?

Phyllis: Oh, no, um, she went to go say goodbye to faith and then nikki and victor.

Kyle: Yeah, I'm not ready to do that yet.

Phyllis: Listen, um, kyle, i wish I could make this easier on you -- I can'T.

Kyle: Tell me what to do.

Phyllis: I don't know what to tell you.

Kyle: So that she will stay. So I can show her that everything will be okay with harrison and me and her.

Phyllis: And tara. You forgot tara.

Kyle: Phyllis, that's ancient history.

Phyllis: Really? Is it?

Kyle: No, I don't have some secret desire to be with tara. I told summer that, and she didn't believe me. I don't even know where she got this idea. Was it from nick? He's always hated me being with summer. Is he trashing me behind my back again?

Phyllis: No, nick is not trashing you. He's not. In fact, he thinks it's admirable that you're stepping up for your son. But all of a sudden, there's this ready-made family that my daughter has to deal with. You have put my daughter in a no-win situation. Listen, I'm not blaming you. I'm not...[ Sighs ] I don't think summer's blaming you either.

[ Sighs ] This is a very difficult situation, and...I think you just have to accept it. You have to accept that there's nothing left to fight for.

Summer: Hey. Hey, I'm so glad I caught you in time.

Faith: In time for what?

Summer: Um, well, I got a job offer, uh, in milan.

Mariah: Milan?

Faith: Like, in italy?

Summer: Yeah, um, as a creative director for marchetti. They -- they want me to start right away, so I'm gonna -- gonna be moving there.

Faith: Oh, my god, when?

Summer: Tonight.

Mariah: I'm gonna let you guys talk.

Faith: I can't believe you're leaving just like that.

Summer: I know. I know it's a really big surprise. Um...but I'm psyched. I get to live in one of the most breath-taking cities in the world, and you get to come visit me, so...how cool is that?

Faith: Yeah, very exciting.

Summer: Mm-hmm.

Faith: Is kyle excited, too? Is there a jabot office in milan?

Summer: Um...kyle's not gonna be coming with me. It's just something I have to do by myself.

Faith: What about the wedding?

Summer: There's not gonna be a wedding.

Faith: Why not?

Summer: Um...well, it's kind of complicated, but, um, I know that you'll be able to understand because you've had to stand up for yourself. Faith, you have made the conscious decision to change the way that things are going in your life, and I am so proud of you for that. Really, I am. I'm just trying to do the same thing, that's all.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Faith: [ Exhales sharply ] My ride is here. I have to go. I can't believe we're actually saying goodbye.

Summer: No, no, we are not saying goodbye, no. No, the italians, they say, "ciao," which really just means "see ya later."

Faith: Ciao. I like that. I love you, summer.

Summer: I love you, too, faith.

Faith: And I expect you to post mad pics so I can share them and brag about my sister, the new creative director at marchetti.

Summer: Yeah.

Mariah: [ Clapping ] You are a real piece of work. Trashing kyle's heart like this.

Summer: I don't expect you to understand, mariah.

Mariah: He committed to his child and...what, you couldn't handle it, so you dumped him and you're taking a gig in italy. I think I understand completely. You know what, summer? Believe it or not, I was pulling for you and kyle this time. I finally believed that you two had something special. I even convinced kyle not to give up on you. But it turns out that you are still exceedingly selfish.

Summer: Mariah, I am not gonna waste my breath trying to change your low opinion of me. It feels right that we're gonna end things like this, the way that they started. So...good luck with your pregnancy.

Mariah: Goodbye, snowflake. So with your home & auto bundle,

Mariah: I heard what snowflake did, and you know what? Good riddance. You deserve so much better than her, kyle.

Kyle: Stop. Keep the nasty comments to yourself, okay? God, I'm sorry.

Mariah: No, no, kyle, I --

Kyle: No, I shouldn't have lost it on you like that. You're not to blame. This is such a mess.

Mariah: I am sorry. I overstepped. I just -- I thought that she had matured a bit this time, but... and I know that it's complicated learning that you're a dad, but you don't say that you love someone and you're willing to commit your life to them and -- and bail when something like this happens, without even trying to make it work. I did it again. I'm sorry. I-I should learn to just stop talking and listen for a change.

Kyle: No, no, no, what you said -- that's what I've got to do. I've got to convince summer we can make this work. Thanks.

Sally: Hi.

Lauren: Hi.

Sally: I have got those second-quarter estimates that you were asking about. Let me pull them up for you.

Lauren: Are you aware that summer's leaving jcv to become the creative director of marchetti?

Sally: I have heard rumors.

Lauren: As plugged in as you are? Come on. I watched you look at that opening with great interest.

Sally: Me and everybody else in the world.

Lauren: Yeah, I also overheard you and summer talk about the insider gossip as to, you know, who was in the running, who was backstabbing whom. Surely you saw this coming.

Sally: Well, look who it is.

Lauren: Hi.

Sally: Buongiorno. Congratulations on the new gig.

Summer: Thank you. -Sally: As jealous as I am, I'm very happy for you.

Summer: Well, I appreciate that. And I'm sorry to interrupt your meeting, but I wanted to speak with lauren before I left. I just didn't like how we left things.

Lauren: I was just shocked that you're leaving jcv. I want you to know I'm happy for you, and I want the best for you.

Summer: Thank you. And, um, since I know that I am leaving you in a very tough position, I just wanted to share my thoughts on how we can create a smooth transition.

Sally: I will let you two chat. We will continue this later.

Lauren: Thank you, sally.

Sally: It's been wonderful collaborating with you, summer. I know you're gonna do big things in europe, and I wish you all the best.

Summer: Well, that was very sweet of you to say. Good luck on all your future endeavors.

Lauren: [ Sighs ] That's quite a suggestion.

Summer: It's just my opinion about my replacement. Anyway, um, it's later than i thought it was, so I should get going. I feel terrible just leaving you like this, though.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] That's the way it is in the fashion industry. Everything's done at break-neck speed. And as much as I hate to lose you, I would never want to stand in the way of you living your best life.

Summer: God, you're being so gracious, lauren. I really appreciate it. And I just want you to know that I will forever be grateful to you for bringing me on board to run jcv.

Lauren: And your contributions as president have been stellar. And, honey, I've just loved working with you.

Summer: Me, too.

[ Sighs ] Okay.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Summer: Alright, well, bye, lauren.

Lauren: Arrivederci, bella.

Summer: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: Hey.

Summer: Hey.

Billy: How you doing?

Summer: Oh, I guess you haven't heard yet.

Billy: I've heard that your wedding got moved up.

Summer: No, there's actually not gonna be a wedding. Um, I got a job offer in italy, and I'm -- I'm leaving tonight.

Billy: Wow. And kyle?

Summer: It didn't work out.

Billy: I presume his child and his ex being dropped into the middle of your life had something to do with your decision.

Summer: Um...could you do me a favor, billy?

Billy: I sure as hell owe you one.

Summer: Jack is an amazing dad, but when kyle needs a friend, will you please be there for him?

Billy: Summer, you're a good one. Look, I don't think kyle wants anything to do with me, but i promise you that I'll try and live up to the belief that you think that I can actually help in any way.

Summer: Thank you. I mean, I think there's a good guy in there somewhere, some of the times, maybe.

[ Chuckles ]

Billy: And I believe you're still in love with my nephew.

Summer: Have a nice life, billy.

Billy: Summer... I'm pulling for you.

Summer: [ Whispers ] Thanks. We're eating and drinking foods and beverages

Sally: So, where were we?

Lauren: Eh, in a minute. You wanted that position in milan, didn't you?

Sally: I mean, who wouldn't? It's an incredible job. It probably had 1,000 applicants, at least.

Lauren: Were you one of them?

Sally: I thought about it. Okay, no, actually, I dreamt about what it would be like to be involved in couture again at that level. And now summer is getting to live it. But honestly, after I looked at it every which way, I just really couldn't see myself as a viable candidate. There was way too many people with way more impressive résumés that were already in line. Which is unfortunate, 'cause i know I could've absolutely crushed it.

Lauren: Well, that's not a good feeling, thinking that you wouldn't be taken seriously. I hope you won't let that affect your confidence going forward.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] That is almost funny, considering how incredibly gifted I am.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: No, I hope you won't take it personally that I was considering what the next phase of my career was gonna look like.

Lauren: Uh, I don't think i would be a good boss if I didn't consider the personal and professional development of my employees. And marchetti hiring summer has no bearing on you and what you're capable of. You're both talented and experienced.

Sally: Well, summer gained that experience because you and jack gave her a shot. I deserve the same chance to prove myself, so I hope that you will judge me based on my tenacity, creativity, and hard work. And even though summer is not my biggest fan and she thinks i might not be ready to step into her shoes, I believe I am.

Lauren: Well, summer may be a bigger fan than you're aware of. She suggested that you replace her as president of jcv.

Billy: You just missed her.

Kyle: Damn it. Well, I guess you know, then.

Billy: I know that she's decided to move to italy. And she didn't admit it, but it sounded like she didn't feel like she had any good options. I'm assuming you feel the same way.

Kyle: What does that mean?

Billy: Kyle, it means you're in an impossible situation. I know you, you're gonna try and do right by your boy, and you're not gonna blame summer for not wanting to be a fifth wheel in an instant family and for her following her decision.

Kyle: Yeah, you know, I've been running all over town, thinking I could convince her. Maybe it's time to give up.

Billy: As a recovering gambler, I would bet on the fact that you got a chance until that plane actually takes off to change her mind. If you fail, you fail. But if you don't try, you're gonna live with the regret.

Kyle: Okay.

Summer: Hi.

Jack: Hi.

Summer: Um...well, I gather that you've heard.

Jack: About the job across the pond? Yeah. Amazing opportunity.

Summer: Yeah. Yeah, it is.

Jack: I'm kind of surprised i ran into you. I figured you'd be neck-deep in preparations for your trip.

Summer: I just wanted to say goodbye to a few people and handle some things.

Jack: Did you talk to kyle today?

Summer: There's nothing left to say.

Jack: He was at the house earlier, and he tore out to go find you. He honestly thinks that there's something he can say to change your mind, to make you stay. Is there?

Summer: Kyle needs to let me go. It's the best thing for everybody. Please, jack, please help him see that.

Jack: From the day kyle found out that harrison was his son, i could've predicted the road ahead. See, I've lived it. And I remember all too well the toll this took on everyone's lives. I tried to explain that to kyle, but I -- I think it was just a lot of words. Didn't take away the pain that he's feeling.

Summer: Yeah, but his son can. He loves harrison just like you love him. You both share that same deep commitment to family. And, jack, please do not let kyle think for a second that he should compromise his relationship with that little boy in any way just to prove something to me.

Jack: I don't think kyle would -- or could -- ever do that.

Summer: [ Sighs ] I see how much he loves being a dad, and I'm so happy for him. I'm just in a different place, and I'm not ready for those things yet. Um, do you remember what you did for me when you found out that I was your daughter -- or when you thought that I was your daughter?

Jack: I gave you one gift for every birthday that I had missed out on.

Summer: I'm asking for this one last gift from you.

Jack: I will do everything in my power to make sure that kyle accepts this is something you need to do.

Summer: Thank you.

Jack: You don't have to thank me. Summer, I helped bring you in to this world. You have always had a very special place in my heart. Which compels me to make a second promise.

Summer: What's that?

Jack: Wherever you are, whatever time of day or night, whatever you need, anything, you can call on me. I am a phone call away. Never forget that.

Sally: Summer recommended me for the job?

Lauren: Yes. She talked about how you have wanted this position since you came to genoa city and that you have gone to great lengths to show you've got the right stuff. So, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm not just gonna hand you the job. I'm going to appoint acting president of jcv, and this will give you time to learn the ins and outs and it'll also give you time to prove whether you deserve the title and the responsibility. This is me setting you up for success, sally, and I think it's what summer had in mind, as well.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Summer: Hey.

Victor: There you are.

Nikki: Summer!

Summer: Oh, hey, aunt vicki, I didn't know you'd be here.

Victoria: Of course. When I heard the news, I wanted to say goodbye to you in person.

Summer: Well, I'm happy to see you.

Victoria: Well, the newman jet is ready to depart whenever you and your dad are.

Summer: Again, I cannot thank you enough for that and the corporate apartment in milan. I mean, you are making this ultra-fast move possible, you do realize that.

Victoria: I'm happy to do it. I love italy. The time that I spent in florence was some of the best in my life.

Summer: Well, I hope italy will be an equally positive experience for me.

Victor: It's very courageous of you. I actually don't like the fact that you're leaving, but this is something you got to take advantage of.

Nikki: I hope this is something you truly want.

Summer: I do, yeah. Yeah, I'm excited for the challenge and getting to live in a major fashion hub.

[ Chuckles ] I mean, I guess I'm a little bit nervous.

Victor: But there's no need to be nervous. You're more than ready. You really are.

Nikki: There's no limit to what you can accomplish. We love you so much, darling.

Summer: Ohh, I love you guys, too. I'm gonna miss all of you.

Victoria: We're gonna miss you, too, but we know you'll be busy kicking so much butt.

Nikki: Yes, in the grand tradition of newman woman.

Summer: Hear, hear.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] So I have a feeling you're gonna see your grandparents sooner than you realize, you know. We're gonna go to florence to attend a concert.

Nikki: And you'll come home to visit, too. Often, I hope.

Kyle: Hey, it's kyle abbott. Has summer newman left our suite yet? Alright, thanks.

Summer: Whew. Ah, well, I guess this is it.

Phyllis: This is it. Well, it's not goodbye. It's not goodbye.

Summer: No, it is, um, just me going on a big life adventure.

Phyllis: Yes, to italy. Oh, my gosh. How much fun. And you're going with your dad, it's like a vacation.

Summer: Yeah.

Phyllis: And then when he comes back, I'll come, and I've never seen milan, you know?

Summer: Really?

Phyllis: No, no. I missed it. Missed it. So I'll come there, and then you can show me around the town, and maybe I can build a grand phoenix there.

Summer: [ Chuckles ] Okay, well, I haven't even arrived yet.

Phyllis: Oh, you've arrived, that's for sure.

Summer: Yeah, I guess so.

Phyllis: Yeah, you have. The world is yours.

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Everything is yours. My beautiful daughter. With your huge heart and your big dreams, right? This is what you wanted.

Summer: Mm-hmm.

Phyllis: And you're resourceful and you're strong. Don't forget that, okay? And you're not gonna take anything from anyone. Because you're my daughter. Remember when I lost my ceo position at jabot and I was down and out? I pulled up my bootstraps and i went on and I created this incredible place. And I kept it, even though everybody was trying to take it away from me. I kept it.

Summer: That is exactly what I am gonna do in milan. I'm gonna reboot my life.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Summer: Hey, mom. Mm. You are my hero. You know that. Mom, you inspire me every day.

Phyllis: I thought your dad was your hero.

[ Chuckles ] I'm even your hero when you're mad at me?

Summer: Oh, yes, especially then. I just hope that I'm half as brave when I need to be.

Phyllis: You're so brave. Oh, my goodness, angelica marchetti -- she won't know what hit her. She's gonna thank her lucky stars that she hired you, okay? I love you so much. I'm gonna miss you like crazy.

Summer: I'm gonna miss you like crazy, mom.

Phyllis: Ohh. Alright.

Summer: [ Exhales ]

Phyllis: This is not goodbye.

Summer: Mnh-mnh.

Phyllis: Okay?

Summer: No.

Phyllis: It's not goodbye.

[ Door opens ]

Tara: [ Sighs ]

Jack: What have you got going on today?

Tara: I am meeting with lauren about my shoe line.

Jack: I didn't know that was today.

Tara: Yes, well, I am finally feeling like my life is settled enough to be able to start focusing on my career. I was hoping to see kyle beforehand so that I could thank him again for encouraging lauren to reach out to me.

Jack: Summer is leaving town today for milan. I think kyle's gonna have his hands full trying to talk her out of going.

Tara: Oh, I hope he succeeds. I mean, I can't help but feel that my presence here with harrison has played a big part in her decision. And I just feel horrible about that. And the last thing I want is kyle to blame me or resent harrison.

Jack: No, no, no, my son would never do that. He adores that boy, and he's very grateful to you with how you've handled everything. The way you've allowed him to be such an important part of harrison's life. No, this is summer's decision, and I'm not sure kyle will ever

Tara: Is there anything I can do to help?

Jack: No, I doubt it. Though harrison's part in kyle's life becomes more important now. Once summer is gone, he is going to take a great deal of comfort from that boy.

Kyle: Summer!

Nick: We're leaving.

Kyle: No, I need to talk to her.

Nick: Don't do this.

Kyle: Please, just five minutes.

Nick: Kyle, let it go.

Summer: Dad, it's -- it's fine, I... you're not gonna change my mind, but we have to say goodbye. There are times, I wonder...

Jack: What brings you by?

Billy: Well, I ran into kyle and summer. Separately, of course, but you know that.

Jack: Yeah, summer should be boarding the newman jet right about now.

Billy: Not if kyle takes my advice and it works.

Jack: You advised him to go after her?

Billy: You didn't?

Jack: Summer took a high-profile job in italy for good reason. There was too much for her to take on here.

Billy: Yes, because kyle has a son from an affair that happened while he and summer weren't together? That doesn't seem insurmountable to me, jack. They can make it work if they want.

Jack: No, billy --

Billy: If they love each other, they can make it work.

Jack: I advised my son that some things in life are not meant to be. No matter how much we might wish it were true, love does not always conquer all. Sometimes things don't go as you planned.

Lauren: I'd like you to sit in on a jcv meeting I already have planned. I'll give you all the details so you can do some homework and be prepared.

Sally: Yeah, let me know anything and everything I need to do to get ready.

Lauren: Absolutely.

Tara: Hi, there. I'm a little early. And if you're in the middle of something, I can wait at the bar.

Lauren: Oh, no, no, please, sit. Sally tells me the two of you are already acquainted.

Tara: Oh, yeah, we've gotten to know each other a bit.

Sally: Would you like a drink -- coffee, iced tea?

Tara: Oh, maybe later. Thank you, though.

Lauren: You know, sally's showing great restraint. We should be drinking champagne to celebrate her new job -- acting president of jcv.

Tara: How marvelous. Congratulations.

Sally: Thank you.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Lauren: Oh, sorry. Ah, it's legal. I got to take this. Hi, how are the negotiations going?

Tara: Uh, sounds like you got the job. After your text, I just assumed that it --

Sally: I know! I didn't think it would happen either, and the real shocker -- summer is the one that recommended me to replace her.

Tara: No way.

Sally: Yeah, when lauren told me, I about fell out of my chair.

Tara: So looks like we're both getting what we wanted after all.

Sally: Yeah, well, I won't relax until summer gets on a plane.

Kyle: Look, I get it, you're scared. But, please, just rethink what you're doing. Give us a chance.

Summer: Kyle --

Kyle: Look, I'm asking you to look at this differently, not as another obstacle to overcome, but something that's good. It's a blessing. This sweet, beautiful kid that came into our lives, it won't take away anything of what we already have. The love we've felt for each other for so many years, it will only make our lives richer, and I promise you that in time, you'll grow to love harrison. He already thinks you're so cool.

Summer: Kyle, please stop. Okay, it's done. I am leaving to go live the life that I want. There is no future between us. None. I don't know how much clearer i can be. You have nothing left to fight for.

Kyle: For you. I'm fighting for you. For the life that we planned to have together.

Summer: Oh, kyle. You are going to have a wonderful life. You'll move on from me. And I'll move on from you. Yeah.
