Episode #12118 ~ Neil's family and friends gather to celebrate his memory.

Provided By Suzanne

Devon: You know what? I'll do my best, mr. Winters. That's all I can promise.

Neil: That's all anyone can promise -- to do their best. Now, there's one other thing.

Devon: What's that?

Neil: Come here.

Oh.

[ Laughs ]

[ Sighs ]

Neil: Devon, welcome to the winters family.

[ Chuckles ]

Lily: Hey. Almost finished?

Moses: Yeah. I mean, there's just so many pictures of dad I haven't seen yet.

Lily: I know. We should do, like, a family photo night sometime. Oh, my god. Look at that one. Wow. This really is the coolest invitation.

Moses: Thank you. I had a lot of fun putting it all together.

Lily: Yeah, looks good. Okay, well, everything is good on our end. Let me just check with devon and make sure he's good. And then we can get your creation out to everyone who loved dad.

Devon: Hey, I was just about to call you. How you doing today?

Lily: Well, you know.

Devon: I do, I do.

Lily: Um, you ready to get this show on the road?

Devon: Yeah, nate is taking care of the delivery from malcolm, and abby's putting the finishing touches on everything else here at society, and everyone else is ready to roll. How's the invite looking, moses?

Moses: Ready for launch.

Devon: Alright. Let's make this happen.

Lily: Alright, here we go. This is for you, dad.

Nikki: What are you doing here?

Victor: Hi, baby. Well, what we're about to receive will explain -- oh, wait a minute, here it is. That should explain it to you.

Nikki: Ah. Oh.

Amanda: "The hamilton-winters family hopes you'll set aside some time today to honor the memory of neil winters by walking in his footprints. Improvise your way around the map and let it lead you to the places he loved and the people he treasured."

Nick: "The miles davis cover of 'footprints' was one of neil's favorite pieces of music, and that's the theme of today's tribute to his memory. Attached is a list of his old stomping grounds, where everyone is welcome to explore the many facets of his life."

Sharon: Neil's jazz club indigo is no longer with us, but the music lingers on. Press here to get a playlist of some of the artists who were featured there. Drop by crimson lights and have a cup of coffee, complements of the house."

Rey: Oh. That's great.

Jack: "There is no way to truly encompass the entire life's journey of a man like neil winters, but hopefully, this will give everyone a taste of his loves and all of his tremendous accomplishments. Come see what a gift he was to this town and to everyone who knew him. Honor neil by honoring the life he led.

Nikki: I cannot believe all the effort neil's children have put into this. They've compiled a list of neil's favorite places, recipes, music... and that explains your reaction earlier. You knew all about this.

Victor: Of course I knew all about it, sweetheart. This is just one of many stops, you know. But I would say newman enterprises, he left his most indelible footprint.

Phyllis: Wow, this playlist. Wow, it's clifford brown, charlie parker, nina simone, dinah washington...

Nick: I mean, if there was ever a soundtrack to a man's life, this is it.

Phyllis: Yeah. "The neil winters experience" -- that's smooth.

Nick: My friend had great taste in music.

Phyllis: Your friend had great taste in friends.

Ashley: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: The decision on that will have to wait, along with any other business for the day. I'm putting it all on hold to remember a good friend today. As a repairman, I hear a lot of folks say

Nick: You know, I'm really looking forward to this tribute walk.

Phyllis: You could take the kids after school.

Nick: Yeah, christian might like parts of it. Faith is probably still a little too fatigued from her surgery. You haven't mentioned anything about going yourself. Are you not feeling it?

Phyllis: No, I'm gonna take part. You should start without me. I'll meet you... you know, you guys were much better friends than I was, so i have something to do beforehand. I'll see you later.

[ Jazz music playing ]

Nate: Hey, amanda.

Amanda: Oh, hi.

Nate: I thought you'd be with devon.

Amanda: Oh, he wanted to do this day on his own, which is just as well, because I don't think I'd even know what to say to him.

Nate: Why do you think that?

Amanda: Well, I feel for him, of course, but I've never lost family. I've been deprived of it, definitely, but different kind of ache.

Nate: Hmm. No matter how or when you lose someone, it's still grief. And no matter what he says, he's gonna need more than a friend today.

Amanda: He's lucky to have you looking out for him.

Nate: I probably need to do that more often.

Lily: "Thinking of the winters family as we take this day to remember neil and the goodness and laughter he brought into this world." "Your father was an inspiration and we'll never forget him." Oh, listen to this one -- "neil winters changed my life."

[ Chuckles ] Is this -- is this too much, hearing these tributes to dad?

Moses: No. No, I mean, I love hearing how much he meant to people, and I'm just so glad that you waited till I was in genoa city so i could be here and see it all.

Lily: Of course. And look, I know that devon and I are a lot older than you, but, you know, ages aside, you're our brother and we love you so much.

Moses: I love you guys too.

Lily: And I really hope that today helps you feel closer to dad.

Moses: Me too. I still really miss him.

Lily: I know. I know that you didn't get a lot of time with time, and devon and I want to make up for that any way that we can. Maybe through sharing stories and memories, and I even have some dad jokes that are pretty funny.

Moses: Okay. Lay some of the dad jokes on me, I'll tell you if they're funny or not.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Okay. Um...let's see, um... oh, why do farmers play jazz music in their cornfields?

Moses: Why?

Lily: Because it's easy on the ears.

[ Both laugh ] Come on, that's pretty good. Okay, wait, um... why are elevator jokes so funny?

Moses: Tell me.

Lily: Because they work on so many levels.

Moses: Okay.

Lily: No?

Moses: That's enough, i think.

Lily: Oh, no, no, I have plenty more, okay? This is part of your legacy, too. And I promise you, I have enough to last a lifetime.

Moses: No.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] When heartburn takes you by surprise.

Jack: I am on my way to neil's memorial. I am really in no mood to get into it about kyle and tara locke.

Phyllis: I didn't come here for that. I'm not gonna get into it with -- with you about kyle. Um...I just wanted to know how you were doing. I know that you and neil shared a special bond.

Jack: Oh. Um...thanks. It's been an emotional day.

Phyllis: I know that he was determined to help you with your fight against addiction and pills.

Jack: You were there, too. I'll never forget that.

Phyllis: I'm not your sponsor, I know that, but I just want you to know that if you need to talk to somebody, I am here for you.

Jack: Are you concerned I'm about to slip off the wagon?

Phyllis: I don't know, because it's been a very difficult year for you, and i just want you to know that I am here for you.

Jack: I appreciate the concern. And though there have been many times in the last year I have wanted to fall right into my addiction, not today. Definitely not today. That would insult neil's memory, insult the hard work he did year after year, fighting his own addiction one day at a time. So instead of trying to avoid the pain, hide from the grief, in honor of my friend, I'm going to live this day, this one day sober.

Devon: Sharon, thank you so much for letting crimson lights be one of the stops on the neil winters experience today.

Sharon: [ Sighs ] This place deserves landmark status for all the friendship and bonding and life-changing advice that neil doled out here.

Devon: Believe me, I know all about it. He and I used to get coffee here every single morning before work. Or he'd come with his friends after aa meetings. Hey, now. Around your neck, is that what i think it is?

Sharon: Yes, this is part of dru's collection. Neil left it to me. I thought it was fitting to wear it today. I like to think that my amazing friend dru is back together with neil again.

Rey: So I understand that you and neil were good friends. How's the day going for you?

Nick: It's alright. Started the morning at the basketball court. Neil and I used to get together and shoot some hoops.

Rey: Oh. I didn't know you played.

Nick: Oh, I got some moves, man. But it was more about just, you know, hanging out, unloading our problems on each other. I miss that.

Rey: Yeah, well, after a few rough months, I'm happy that i can finally say that I don't have any problems that I need help with, but if you're interested, I hear that my advice is life-affirming and game-changing.

Nick: Oh, yeah?

Rey: Mm-hmm. I also heard what I do on the basketball court is so good, it should be made illegal.

Nick: Okay, so you're that bad, then.

Rey: Oh, you got some moves, huh?

Nick: You may be really good at talking smack, but I will wipe the court with you.

Rey: Any time, any place.

Neil: Hey.

Nick: What you doin' out here? Is it seniors' day?

Neil: Must be seniors' day. You're here.

[ Chuckles ]

Nick: [ Chuckles ]

Neil: I hear, uh, congratulations are in order, huh? An old married man yet again.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Let's go. Make you take it to, uh, 30?

Neil: Oh, a little one-on-one?

Nick: Yeah, let's do it.

Neil: Okay, hold on.

Nick: Uh-oh, uh-oh.

Neil: When in rome... okay, I'll tell you what -- you take the ball out.

Nick: Done.

[ Sighs ] I still got it.

Neil: Victor, you've continued acquiring lending companies.

Victor: These companies all have something in common.

Neil: They hold jabot's debt. So in effect, you'll be in a position to foreclose on jack abbott.

Victor: And this situation, with our numbers being down, could prove to be to our advantage.

Neil: By lulling the abbotts into a false sense of security.

Victor: In which case jack abbott will be tempted to move in for the kill. And he'll stick out his neck so far --

Neil: The axe will fall, and he's history.

Victor: That's the plan, neil. I want you to know that I've entrusted you with this because you've proven to be loyal to me. I know I can trust you.

[ Knock on door ] Come in.

[ Door opens ]

Jack: Once again, we find ourselves on common ground. Counting your veggies can be hard.

Jack: We both lost a cherished friend in neil. Strangely enough, we both entrusted him with running our companies.

Victor: I think neil would be very proud to find out what his family has done for him today.

Jack: Yes, I think he would. Speaking of family, I heard you and adam have joined forces again.

Victor: Oh, yeah, we have.

Jack: I hope you'll do right by him this time. He's spent a lifetime trying to win your approval. Wouldn't it be nice if he finally pulled it off?

Victor: Stick talking about your own son.

Jack: Let's leave kyle out of this.

Victor: Oh. Did I hit a sore spot? How's kyle doing?

Jack: Kyle is fine. Don't push it.

Victor: I'm not pushing a damn thing. You walked into my office.

Jack: That's right, and I can just as easily walk out.

Victor: You certainly can.

Jack: You know, neil winters was the one person on earth that would've stood by both of us.

Victor: And he would've told both of us right now to stop the bull, especially considering the day.

Jack: Well, look at that. We finally agree on something. Good day, victor.

Victor: Oh, good day, jack.

Amanda: Lily.

Lily: Hey.

Amanda: You busy?

Lily: No, come on in. What's, uh -- what's going on?

Lily: Just checking in, seeing how the day's going for you.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, it's been great, you know? I've had a lot of people come in and out and just share stories, so it's been a lot of good memories.

Lily: You know you don't have to do that.

Lily: Do what?

[ Chuckles ]

Amanda: Put on a front. Act like the day's not affecting you.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Yeah, you got me.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ] I know. I just... I didn't think today would be so hard, you know? I mean, I have to deal with the loss of my dad every day, but...

[ Sighs ] He was such an amazing man. He really was. I mean, he wasn't perfect, you know? He made mistakes. But he always admitted to them. And he was always striving to be a better person.

Amanda: Sounds like you're a lot like him.

Lily: [ Sighs ] Well, I try to be.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Sniffles ] But he always showed up. Always. And I really want to be like that.

Amanda: I want to be like that, too.

Nate: Hey, devon.

Devon: Hey, man. Take a seat. Oh, how is -- how's the photo that malcolm sent look?

Nate: It's perfection.

Devon: Yeah?

Nate: Just like one of those old jazz album covers.

Devon: Good, good.

Nate: Neil would've flipped.

Devon: Nice, nice. I appreciate you taking care of that.

Nate: You never have to thank me for something like that.

Devon: I do, I do. I'm happy that you were able to be a part of today.

Nate: I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I'm honored. You know, I, uh -- I thought i knew everything about neil, but I learned a few things.

Devon: Hmm?

Nate: And I got to tell you, that playlist blows my mind.

Devon: Just putting it together was something else.

Nate: Hearing his favorite music makes it feel like he's a part of this.

Devon: Yeah.

Nate: Remember when malcolm worked here?

Devon: I do. I remember that neil hated malcolm working here. That's what I remember.

Nate: Those two found a lot of reasons to fight over things.

Devon: Yeah.

Neil: We're family here. You're supposed to be able to talk to me. How can you shut me out like that?

Malcolm: I got nothing to say to you. Let it go.

Neil: What is your problem?

Malcolm: I don't like feeling like I'm on somebody's witness stand. Neil, it's my life. How I live it is my choice. I don't owe you an explanation.

Neil: I get that you went through hell in africa, and maybe one day you're gonna tell me about that. But while you were over there, i was right here, thinking you were dead, drowning my sorrows in a bottle of alcohol. That was rough, man.

Malcolm: Looks like you pulled through alright.

Neil: I pulled through because I had help.

Nate: Losing neil was hell on malcolm. Hit him hard. Especially since they wasted all that time fighting instead of just forgiving each other.

Devon: I know, sometimes, you have to stop -- stop living in the past. Forget about the pain. Usually everything just falls away when you focus on what really matters.

Nate: Let's not make that same mistake.

Sharon: Hi, ashley. It's so nice to see you.

Ashley: Thanks. I'm sure you know why I'm here.

Sharon: You'd like a cup of the neil special?

Ashley: I wouldn't have it any other way today.

Sharon: You know, everywhere I look today, I see another reminder of neil, but my favorite ones are the people who adored him.

Ashley: Yeah. Well, things didn't work out for us in the long run. You know, all day today, I've been thinking about what might have been. But you know what, sharon? The moments that we did have were pretty incredible. You know what? I haven't really felt much like laughing lately. But I'm realizing that things are just so... effortless with you. Just kind of easy, and there's no expectations. Mm-mnh.

Neil: Maybe because we've been here before.

Ashley: Maybe. Thank you.

Sharon: To neil. I hope he knew how loved he was.

Ashley: I like to think that he did. Is now a good time for a flare-up?

"The young and the restless"

will continue.

[ Jazz music playing ]

Nikki: I know this piece.

[ Playing piano ]

[ Stops playing piano ]

[ Clapping ] Oh.

Jack: Wow. When did you learn to play that?

Nikki: Um...neil asked me to prepare it for a charity concert, and, of course, i didn't have the chance to perform it. He loved this piece.

Jack: Music was so important to neil. Did you know devon is launching a new jazz label in honor of neil? He's calling it "winter's mood."

Nikki: Oh. Well, that's wonderful.

Jack: Isn't that great? He's very excited about it. And it's set up to benefit the further expansion of the abbott-winters foundation treatment centers.

Nikki: Wow. Neil would have loved that.

Jack: I still can't believe he's gone.

Nikki: I know. Too soon. He meant the world to me.

Jack: Yeah, I felt the same way. You know what they say in treatment, that it takes a village? For a time there, we three were each other's village.

Nikki: Yeah.

Victor: Hey.

Devon: How you doing, mr. Newman?

Victor: Devon.

Devon: I heard a rumor I'd find you here.

Victor: Yeah. How the hell have you been?

Devon: I'm doing very, very well.

Victor: Alright.

Devon: I just wanted to stop by and say thank you so much, because when victoria told me that we could use newman as one of the stops on the memorial walk, I wasn't expecting anything as elaborate as the display that you put up in the lobby.

Victor: I just want to make sure that people realize what your father had all done, you know? Realize what he'd all accomplished.

Devon: No, it's -- it's fantastic, and I hope that you always know how much my father valued his time working here.

Victor: He contributed a great deal to newman enterprises, you know? And more importantly, he was a good friend. One of the few people I really trusted. But he'd then decided to leave newman enterprises to, you know, embark upon his own career.

Devon: Yeah.

Victor: And he joined up with you to form hamilton-winters. I was very happy for him.

Devon: Yeah.

Victor: There's nothing that makes a man happier than to work with his son side-by-side to create something, you know?

Devon: Absolutely, I do know. It's -- it was one of the best times of my life. I learned so much from him.

Victor: And I hear your brother moses is here.

Devon: That's right.

Victor: That would make your dad very happy to know that his whole family is here, you know, honoring him.

Devon: I do. Hi sabrina!

>&gtHi jen!

Moses: So...this is where my father worked?

Victor: This is where your father worked. And this is where your father ran the show for a while.

Moses: Wow. Impressive.

Victor: You have some big shoes to fill, you know. Think you're up for it?

Moses: Yeah, I'd like to think I am.

Victor: Yeah? Well, I have an idea. Why don't you sit in that chair where he used to sit and try it out?

Moses: You sure?

Victor: Yes, go ahead. See if you like it.

[ Chuckles ] How does it feel?

Moses: Great. Like I could rule the world.

Victor: Yep. So, if you ever want to abandon your medical studies and join the world of business, you know we always need bright, new minds. You're always welcome here. And of course, you know that you will always have a position at hamilton-winters, right?

Ashley: Stick to your guns. It's what your dad would have done.

Victor: Well, my goodness.

Ashley: Hi.

Victor: Ashley abbott. She's right, you know. When your father made up his mind to do something, he stuck to his guns. The very bitter end. I respected him a great deal.

Ashley: High praise coming from victor newman.

Lily: Billy, hey. No, not at all, I'm glad you called. Oh, no, don't apologize. I mean, it was an important meeting, so one of us had to be there. Um...yeah, it's been good. I just got back from the old family apartment, so brought back a lot of memories. Okay. I'll see you later. Bye. Dad, is everything okay?

Neil: Oh, I was actually about to ask you the same thing. You looked so upset yesterday.

Lily: Well, I don't really want to talk about.

Neil: You know who us fathers are, always worried about our little girls.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Neil: You can tell me. Is it some boy trouble, some --

Lily: No, dad, no, it's not. Stop!

[ Speaks indistinctly ] What are you doing here anyway?

Neil: I told you, I came here to see you. Ever since your mother got her promotion and I went back to work, it's tough to catch up with you. I don't get to spend as much time as I'd like to with you.

Lily: Well, that's okay. Seems like I haven't had much time for myself these days, too, so... school is so much harder this year.

Neil: Yeah, we all get caught up with our busy routines sometimes, don't we?

Lily: Yeah.

Neil: Hey, you know, I was thinking.

Lily: Uh-oh. We all know how dangerous that can be.

Neil: Very funny, young lady.

Lily: Yeah.

Neil: What are your plans for the rest of the day?

Lily: Um, usual stuff, nothing special.

Neil: Yeah, nothing special? I like that, because I've cleared all the work off my desk. I was hoping that we could spend the rest of the day together.

Lily: Just you and me?

Neil: Of course you and me, bozo. What are you talking about? I figured we could go to the genoa city athletic club, get a quick workout in, then maybe grab a bite, a movie. How about it?

Lily: Alright, let's do it.

Neil: Okay, come on.

Rise and shine to

a tasty new era.

Devon: Hey.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Hey. How's the day going for you?

Devon: [ Chuckles ] It'S...it's been, uh, kind of like a roller coaster. Up and down. But it's much better now that I'm looking at you.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] I'm -- I'm sorry if you wanted me to catch up with you sooner. I just... I didn't know if you wanted space, and...honestly, I can't imagine the sense of loss that you're feeling because...I've never been loved by someone the way that neil loved you. And I've never loved someone the way that you loved him.

Devon: It's really okay. I understand.

Amanda: No, no, but I say all of that because I don't want to run from it. And if you'll let me, I would love to share this day with you and help in any way that I can.

Devon: Well, you're doing it. You're doing it right now, just by being here. I appreciate you. It's very difficult to put how special today is into words, you know? It's almost over.

Amanda: Yeah. But what a wonderful way to remember him.

Devon: Yeah, you know, i know. No matter how many memories and moments are shared, he's -- he's still gone. At least he went in peace, you know? That's all anybody can ever ask for. Just peace.

Nikki: What a beautiful photo.

Victor: Captures his essence, doesn't it?

Nikki: Did many people come by newman to pay their respects?

Victor: Mm-hmm. Quite a few people in the lobby.

Nikki: I'd ask how you're feeling, but I can see it in your eyes.

Victor: Yeah. [ Exhales sharply ] He passed much too soon, didn't he? Neil was a good man, you know? One of the few men I trusted.

I've seen the sun rise then watched it fall then under clouds that never part at all I've had a love and lost a time or two and I'm grateful for it all decisions made, I might regret a few I've learned you can't feel joy without sadness, too I've had dreams a few came true and I'm grateful for it all memories, they can't sustain when your heart is feeling blue, ooh one thing in life that doesn't change there's always love somewhere waiting for you I've known friendship that never failed felt the pain that comes with betrayal but I can't deny I live life well and I'm grateful for it all

Next week on "the young and the restless"...

Michael: I just wanted to let you know that the judge has issued a ruling in your case.

Chelsea: Am I going to prison?

Nate: Why haven't I ever met you before?

Imani: I'm visiting from out of town.

Nate: Oh.

Imani: But I expect that I'll be coming to genoa city pretty often because I like what I've seen so far.

Kyle: Harrison and I had dna samples taken for a paternity test. These are the results.
