Adam: Sharon. What's wrong?

Sharon: Faith's body rejected the transplant.

Adam: What? No. No, that can't be. I have the same rare blood type. And the test -- the test showed that I could help. Sharon, I came back to do this for her -- and for you. To save your daughter's life. It has to work. She has to be alright.

Sharon: Of course it didn't work. Because you're toxic. You're like a cancer to everyone you touch, including my daughter, including me.

[ Storm raging ]

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Victor: Your move. Have you forgotten the rules of the game?

Adam: I haven'T. Since when do you and I play by the rules?

Victor: This time, I insist you do. This is the most important game of your life. It's an all-or-nothing game. Move wisely. Pay attention. This will determine your future.

[ Monitors beeping ]

Victor: Make your move. It's right there in front of you.

Adam: I should take your knight.

Rey: Makes sense you'd go for the knight, the protector, the cop. You want to take me out. You always have. You talk about being misunderstood, the circumstances that shaped you, how the terrible things you've done don't represent who you are, but your actions tell the truth. Rey: It never mattered to you that I'm good for sharon. That I'm a positive influence in her life. That she feels happy and safe and loved with me. You see me as someone who's standing in the way of what you want, what you're determined to have. Chelsea may have been the one who suffered a breakdown and poisoned me, but the reason she did it was because of you. She never would've been pushed to that breaking point if you had just loved her the way that she deserved.

Adam: I didn't try to stop your wedding. I just -- I had to see it for myself.

Rey: You should've never been there, period. You should've been with the woman that you claim to love and want to spend the rest of your life with. But you're not capable of that kind of love. The stable, solid, forever kind. No. There is something broken in you. Something beyond repair. That's why every time you feel irredeemable, you run to sharon, because you think she can save you. You think she's your truest, deepest connection. And you even tricked her into thinking the same thing. I've come close to showing her the truth, to pulling back the curtain on this sick obsession.

Adam: Okay. Okay, you're right. It is an obsession, and it needs to end.

Rey: You need to give her up. You need to break your hold over her. That's the only way that she'll be free.

Victor: It's your move, son.

Adam: I'm not gonna take your knight. I still plan to win, but maybe there's a different way of to go about it.

Victor: Still is your move.

Rey: There may be hope for you yet.

Chloe: Mm, the pawn. So little, so insignificant. You know, it can only be moved one square at a time -- well, two for its opening move. Don't underestimate its power. It can be the key to the whole game.

Adam: Come on. It's the piece that everyone sacrifices in service of their goals. Like chelsea did with you, right? You know, I've suspected it was you all along being her accomplice.

Chloe: Well, maybe I was, maybe I wasn'T. But it's so like you to obsess over that, without remembering the last time you were in the hospital wasn't because you were some honorable, noble organ donor. It's because I put you there.

Adam: And then I covered for you with the police. Obviously a mistake, given how you returned the favor.

Chloe: You weren't trying to look after me. I mean, you just wanted to take care of me yourself. After all, I'm not some powerful, wealthy person for you even to consider a formidable rival. I mean, I'm nothing like your father. Oh, hi, victor. You know, adam, it's funny how all the attempts I've tried to take you down have just been dismissed as the pathetic, crazy, grieving woman, while billy -- I mean, when billy went after you -- he was a power player, seeking vengeance on his daughter's behalf.

Adam: I thought we made our peace over delia.

Chloe: Your weakness -- in chess and, well, everything else -- is that you never really consider all of the possible ramifications of your moves. Like when you turned off the power at chanccomm because you were mad at billy, it didn't even occur to you that chelsea could be injured in the process.

Adam: I have apologized to her for that dozens of times.

Chloe: Yeah, but did you really learn from your mistake?

Adam: Have you learned from yours?

Chloe: After everything I've done, I'm still standing. I'm in a supportive, faithful relationship with the man of my dreams and I have two beautiful children, so compared to you,

[Chuckles] I mean, I'm winning.

Adam: But you're not even a factor in this game.

Chloe: You know what everybody always forgets? Is that if the pawn makes it to the other side of the board, it gets promoted. It acquires the powers of another piece. So it can be anything it wants. I mean, it could be a rook, a knight, even queen. It's the only piece that grows stronger by perseverance. So, I don't know, you might want to take a look at the first move you made. It might be far more consequential than you realized.

Victor: Playing it safe is not the answer, son.

Adam: You're telling me what not to do, but you won't tell me what to do.

Victor: I'm guiding you as much as I can, but you're the master of your own fate. Whatever choices you make now will determine your future.

[ Storm raging ]

Adam: I need to protect my rook.

Victor: Hmm. You're gonna protect your castle, huh?

Billy: That's a bad move, man. Are you not paying attention? This is your last shot at redemption. I mean, we're talking resurrecting the scrapyard remains of your soul. If you don't start thinking about this game entirely different, you're gonna end up with nothing.

Billy: The rook is a castle built with tall walls. Much like the ones you've built around yourself. Fortified to keep the pain as far away as possible. See, the problem with those walls is that if you don't take them down, they shelter you from all the magnificent things in life as well, like true love and connection, joy. And you -- you have cut yourself off from those things for so long that you don't even remember what they feel like. Let him have the rook.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] I don't need your advice. You're the last person that i would listen to with everything on the line.

[ Clears throat ] You don't know me at all.

Billy: Well, adam, I know you better than almost anyone. You see, you became a central figure in my life.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Billy: You walked every step with me, you invaded my dreams. Forever connected because of the night my daughter decided to get out of the car and you came speeding around the curve.

Adam: You realize that i never meant for that to happen. It was an accident.

Billy: Maybe. But it's what did after. The lengths you went to cover up the fact that you killed my daughter.

Adam: Why does it always come back to that?

Billy: Because it was a defining moment. Both of our lives divided into before and after that night. Parts of us turned to dust and somehow blown together that night at a curve in the road. And then that dust turned to stone, that built a wall that bonded us in a way that neither one of us ever wanted.

Victor: I mean, think of all the repercussions over the years because of this one fateful night. And think of all the moves that billy boy has made against you and all the moves you've made to counter him.

Adam: I know that it's affected us both. What do you want me to do? Do you want me to just let it all go, forgive him?

Billy: It's not me you need to forgive. Like I said, if you don't take those walls down, you don't have the slightest chance of winning the game.

Victor: You want to make that move again?

[ Thunder crashes ]

Billy: Good for you.

Victor: You're one step closer, son. You know, your bishop is the most dangerous piece on this board. Can move all the way up to threaten the king.

Phyllis: You see me as a threat. You finally acknowledge it.

Victor: You dark shaman.

Phyllis: The grim reaper calling me dark? That's rich. Let's lighten the mood.

Adam: I don't want or need your input.

Phyllis: You don't? Hmm. You remember when we had so much fun, adam. Blackmail, espionage, hacking. Now you're so sad and miserable. So sad. In a crisis of faith.

Adam: I'm trying to change my life for the better.

Phyllis: You can't change. You'll never change. And for those of us who tried, we just revert back to who we are, don't we?

Victor: Enough.

Phyllis: You don't control me. This is his game to win or lose. It's an eye for an eye. You have to be ruthless, like your dear old dad. Hey, adam. Call me when you realize I'm right.

[ Clicks tongue ]

Adam: You're going after my queen.

Nick: I'd say I'm your best chance at protecting her. That's right, the white knight coming in like the cavalry to save your sorry behind. The question is, who is it we're protecting? Who is the one person who will stand beside you no matter what?

Adam: At this point, I don't even know.

Nick: Well, you're the last one to figure it out then, slick 'cause everybody knows who your queen is. It's sharon. Hi sabrina!

Adam: Whatever you say, man.

Adam: I never said anything about sharon being my queen. Those are your words.

Nick: But you know I'm right.

Adam: Whatever you say, man.

Nick: Adam, your one big move is a long, constant play on sharon's emotions. I gotta hand it to you, it's worked. You've come between sharon and rey. You have somehow convinced sharon there's a much better man inside of you, one who shouldn't be judged by his previous actions, no matter how horrendous they may be. Someone who is truly seeking redemption.

Adam: I am seeking redemption. I mean, you know that's true. I practically poured my heart out to you when we were trapped in kansas. I told you that I wanted to change my life and I asked what it would take for you to see me in a different way, and you made me believe that that was possible.

Nick: Perhaps I'm just as good at playing people as you are. But make no mistake, I made this move to protect sharon. Helping you was an unintended consequence.

Adam: But then what is the point of making the right move if it doesn't make a difference?

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Well, that was easier than i thought. We've been down this road before. Every time you talk about changing, you quit before anything happens.

Victor: The point of this game is to protect those we love. Now, if you want to be part of that, okay. If not, kindly leave.

Nick: [ Sighs ] Can't say I didn't try. Your queen is here.

Sharon: I am nobody's queen. You're both wrong to think of me that way. You may think you want me by your side, but I shouldn't be there.

Adam: Why? Because I'm toxic? Because I destroy everything that I touch? Is that what you really believe?

Sharon: No. I've always wanted you to be happy and free. I wanted to help you find peace, and I truly believe that I was helping you.

Adam: You were. You -- you are. You were the only person that can force me to see the truth and how we've hurt the people that we care most about -- how we've damaged your relationship with rey and mine with chelsea.

Sharon: We did that to ourselves, falling into old habits. I was your crutch -- a way for you to avoid facing your demons and figuring things out for yourself. It's a wall you need to break through if you're really going to make the kinds of changes you're talking about -- the kind that I know you are capable of. May I?

Victor: It should be you. Go ahead.

Sharon: Thank you for saving my daughter's life. Now, go and do what's best for both of us. Once and for all, let me go.

[ Monitors beeping ]

Adam: The moves I've been making have left me at a disadvantage, with dwindling options, making it much harder to win this game.

Victor: You can regain the upper hand very easily. The winning move has been right in front of you. You haven't seen it yet, have you?

Adam: No, no. I've left myself too vulnerable. There's no way to win this game. But perhaps that was the point. You want to teach me a lesson in humility? You enjoy seeing me flounder?

Victor: Son, I take no enjoyment in that.

Adam: Maybe phyllis was right. People don't change. I tried to play the game differently. The board doesn't lie. It certainly put me in my place. There's no way to win. I forfeit.

Victor: Son, you don't mean that.

Adam: I do. I'm done. So tell me, what move would've won the game?

Chelsea: Allow me. Allergens are little terrors all around us.

Chelsea: What, I'm not allowed to play? You thought I was gone for good? Out of sight, out of mind?

Adam: No, I didn't think that.

Chelsea: You hoped they would lock me up and throw away the key.

Adam: I never meant to hurt you.

Chelsea: Your actions tell a different story. Bringing in sharon to be my therapist when I was helpless, couldn't do anything but blink.

Adam: Nothing else was working. All we wanted was to help you recover.

Chelsea: By triggering a reaction. Well, that reaction was rage. So well done, adam. Did you think about what it would do to me when you kissed sharon?

Adam: It was a mistake. It was all a mistake. All I wanted was for you to get well so we could have our family and our life back.

Chelsea: You really think that's possible after everything that's happened?

Adam: I know it is.

Chelsea: Even if I was amenable, you'd have no idea how to get there. You can't see the move. See? It could've been so easy. It would've been checkmate. I was all you needed.

I was your queen. You could have won. You could have had everything you said you ever wanted, but you threw it all away and now you're alone.

Adam: It doesn't have to end this way, okay? We can start over.

Chelsea: It's too late. I've lost my mind, remember? You drove me over the edge, adam, and it's too late to pull me back.

Adam: No, please, chelsea, please.

Chelsea: Enjoy your lonely life. You deserve it.

Victor: Chelsea never minces words, you know. But you played a hell of a game. Let's go have a drink.

[ Storm raging ]

Victoria: Boy, have you made a mess -- ceding ground, letting people push you all over the board.

[ Sighs ] Do you really think you deserve a reset? A do-over? You know, you're never gonna be a knight like nick or rey.

Adam: I refuse to continue on the way I was. It's leading me down a path i don't want to travel.

Victoria: You sound so sincere.

Adam: I am.

Victoria: Are you seriously buying into this crap? That it's all about how you play the game? Because it's about one thing -- winning. Check.

Adam: I don't want to play against you. I have no interest in fighting with you anymore.

Victoria: Well, it's a little late for that, don't you think? You've provoked me, you've taunted me, you framed me. But most of all, you underestimated me -- when I'm the one that you should fear the most.

Adam: [ Gasps ]

You're clearly someone

who takes care of yourself.

Sharon: Please tell us you have good news.

Nate: Every test so far indicates that faith's body is accepting the transplanted kidney.

Sharon: Oh, thank god.

Nick: So she's gonna be okay.

Nate: If things continue down this path, she should make a full recovery. Adam's kidney will function like one of her own.

Nick: Should he be out of his bed?

Nate: It's actually encouraged for transplant patients to start walking as soon as they can. It's a good sign if adam feels ready to do it.

Sharon: It looks like he wants to check on faith.

Nick: Excuse me for a second. How you feeling?

Adam: I've had better days. But all that matters right now is faith. They figure out if the transplant is gonna work yet?

Nick: We just got an update. Everything looks pretty good. Seems like her body accepted your kidney.

Adam: That's good. That means everything we did in kansas -- we did the right thing.

Nick: Yeah. So, what happens now? I mean, looks like you're gonna be a free man. You can do whatever you want, go wherever you want.

Adam: I'm not -- I'm not really sure exactly.

Nick: I'm assuming you're gonna want to be with connor.

Adam: Yeah, I can't really do that yet. I, um... I lost the game, but I -- it's not too late. I got to reset.

[ Clears throat ] Make amends.

Nick: Yeah, you know, maybe you should get back in your bed, you know, get some rest.

Adam: Look, let me start by saying that I'm sorry, nick. For everything.

Sharon: Is adam okay?

Nick: I mean, he was acting kind of strange. Could've been the drugs. He was talking about some game and losing and making amends and resetting. And he apologized -- for everything.

Sharon: What do you think that means?

Nick: I saw a different side of him in kansas. Seems like he really wants to change. Maybe he means it.

Sharon: Maybe. Everyone remembers the moment they heard...

Sharon: How are you?

Adam: I'm better now that i know in all probability the transplant was a success.

Sharon: Adam, I'll never be able to thank you enough.

Adam: Well, you don't have to try. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it is the least thing that I could do.

Sharon: I spoke to nick, and he said something about you wanting to make amends.

Adam: I think he thought i was rambling because of the meds.

Sharon: [ Chuckles ] Were you?

Adam: No, I knew exactly what I was saying. It's like I woke up with this new awareness. A desire to make some changes and be a better person. Wow, you're so stunned you are speechless?

Sharon: No. I'm just taking a moment to let it all set in.

Adam: Take all the time you need. Your skepticism is understandable.

Sharon: I never said i doubted you.

Adam: Well, you'd be a fool if you didn'T. And you're no fool. And I'm determined to prove to my family and everybody else that I care about that I can change.

Sharon: That's an admirable goal, and if that's what you really want, I believe that you will do it.

Adam: Yeah. It's not gonna be easy, but the first step is, um... letting you go. Finally and completely. I'm gonna stop running to you with all my problems and asking you to save me, using you as a crutch. I'm not gonna complicate your life anymore, sharon.

Sharon: What happened between us, that was not one-sided.

Adam: But I know how much that you love rey, and he loves you, too. You guys are good together, and I'm not gonna get in the way anymore. In fact, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna help you so you guys find your way back together.

Sharon: Well, that's a very nice sentiment, but I don't think that's possible anymore.

Adam: Hey. Is it not only possible, it's going to happen.

Sharon: What, are you playing matchmaker now?

Adam: Hey, I may not look like a typical cupid, but I can get things done. Alright, just because I'm making some changes doesn't mean I can't be as relentless to make it happen.

Sharon: So it's a new you, but just mixed in with a little bit of the old.

Adam: Using my powers for good instead of evil.

Sharon: Get some rest.

Nick: Hello.

Phyllis: Hey! Okay, tell me what I want to hear.

Nick: Faith's body seems to be accepting the transplant.

Phyllis: That is amazing news!

Nick: Yeah.

Phyllis: Oh!

Nick: Hey, I want to thank you for being there for me through that whole thing. I know my mother didn't make it easy for you.

Phyllis: Nikki and I were able to rise above, you know, for faith.

Nick: Mm-hmm. Well, it's just, you know, it's awesome 'cause I haven't always been able to depend on you like that, you know?

Phyllis: Yeah, I know. I've changed -- for the better, because of you.

Nick: Well, this reliable, dependable phyllis -- way better to be in a relationship with.

Phyllis: That's -- that's good. Okay. Imagine how I feel, right?

[ Both laugh ] Speaking of people changing, chelsea was the one who poisoned rey. And then she had a psychotic break or something?

Nick: Yeah, I'm struggling trying to process it still. I feel awful for chelsea, but maybe it's a moment of truth for adam.

Phyllis: Do you think he was sincere when he told you he wanted to turn his life around?

Nick: I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't know. It really does feel like a new day, though -- a good day.

Victor: You look great, considering what you've been through, son.

Adam: Yeah, honestly, I woke up energized and ready to move forward.

Victor: Well, there's no rush, alright? I want you to completely recover. Then we'll talk.

Adam: Well, I think I'm gonna be ready to move forward sooner than you think. I mean, I'm ready to get back in the game with you, dad. And this time I'm not gonna let you down.

Victor: Well, son, I have full confidence in that. And you know that the charges against you regarding the poisoning of rey the detective have been dropped. So you are back home where you belong. And I couldn't be happier about the outcome. Oh, I see, I see. What's this? It was there all along. Look at that. Checkmate. And I win again.
