Episode #12066 ~ Abby plans for her future. Elena and Devon struggle to find closure. Victoria catches Billy off guard.

Nikki: Well, it was so nice getting a text from you about having coffee together.

Victor: Well, my darling, i had to keep myself occupied while our daughter is making a pitch for ashland locke's company.

Nikki: Yeah, I had a feeling you wouldn't be pleased when you learned about that.

Victor: You knew about this? Why didn't you tell me what she was up to?

Nikki: And get caught up in the middle of your ongoing conflict that the two of you have? No, thank you. Besides, you must have anticipated this when you decided to first buy cyaxares and then enlisted adam to run it. I mean, you baited her, and she responded.

Victor: I didn't expect her to do it like this. She went behind my back, bidding against me.

Nikki: Well, maybe next time you'll listen to me when I warn you not to challenge our daughter. But I doubt it.

Victor: Yeah. Hmm.

Ashland: The two pitches I've heard so far today have been quite impressive.

Victoria: I don't doubt it. My brother adam is a fierce competitor. And billy and lily have done remarkable things with chanccomm straight out of the gate.

Ashland: Indeed they have.

Victoria: You know, they're both very media-savvy. In fact, billy ran a magazine in his younger years --

restless style. Perhaps you've heard of it.

[ Glass thuds ]

Ashland: Your generosity towards your competitors -- I find it intriguing. Sad to say it's not reciprocated. They weren't brimming with compliments about you.

Victoria: Well, I consider it a gift when people underestimate me. Kind of like my secret weapon.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] Right. You'll have to do without it today. I've been researching the moves you made at newman since you took over last year. And based on what I've learned, there's no way I'll be underestimating you.

Devon: Hey.

Elena: Hey. I can tell by the look on your face that I probably should have called before coming over. I was just passing by. Thought I'd see if you were ready to have that talk you mentioned.

Devon: Yeah. I have a conference call I've been waiting on all day that I'm supposed to jump on.

Elena: No problem. No problem. Um, why don't you just text me when you're not too busy. Okay. Bye.

Devon: Hey. I -- I don't even know why i said that. I don't have a meeting.

Elena: Well, I wasn't just passing by.

Devon: Why don't you come in and we can talk.

Elena: Okay.

Mariah: How are you feeling after your procedure this morning?

Abby: I'm fine, aside from a little cramping now that the anesthesia's worn off.

Mariah: Are all systems a go? Did they harvest any eggs?

Ashley: 10!

Mariah: 10?!

Ashley: Yes!

Mariah: Oh, that's great! That's fantastic. I'm so happy for you.

Ashley: Abby was very brave. She didn't complain about her hospital gown...very much.

[ Laughter ]

Abby: Hey, I had to play my part. Now it's up to the doctor. And then you.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Rey: Nobody's gonna judge you.

Sharon: Excuse me?

Rey: The point of having our new therapist come to the house for our first session was so that we could be more relaxed, not so she could run her white glove across the furniture.

Sharon: No, I wasn't trying to impress anybody. I just had a few spare moments. I thought I would make the best of it.

Rey: That knickknack that went missing -- ever show up?

Sharon: Nope.

Rey: I know you don't want to think that faith was responsible. Neither do I. But, uh, maybe we should check her room while she's at nick's just to make sure?

Sharon: [ Sighs ] Well, I'd like to hope that if she did take it, she would just give it back to me on her own. But as far as us invading her space and rooting around without her knowledge -- there's been trust issues lately...

Rey: Point taken. I'll leave it to you then.

Sharon: I think that's best.

Rey: I know you're anxious about starting therapy. I really appreciate your willingness to take this steP. Shows how committed you are to making our marriage stronger.

Sharon: Well, I just wish that your trust in me hadn't been shaken in the first place. I wish you would believe me when I tell you that I love you and i want to be with you, not adam -- yoU.

Rey: Well, you know us detectives. We need evidence.

[ Doorbell rings ] That'll be the therapist.

[ Door opens ] Hello. You must be iris. I'm rey. Come on in. Discover the replenishing power

Lily: You know, I was thinking about getting a treadmill for the office, but i realized I don't think we need one.

Billy: I'm just kicking myself. This meeting with locke -- I shouldn't have bad-mouthed the newmans for all their in-fighting.

Lily: We both felt good about your decision. Why are you doubting yourself?

Billy: What did it prove? I mean, right now I'm just hoping i didn't lower the bar so much that I made it easy for victoria to go in there and wow the guy.

Nikki: I tried to persuade victoria not to get involved.

Victor: Mm.

Nikki: She has too much going on without getting mixed up in a bidding war. But would she listen to me? No, she would not.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Well, thank you for that.

Nikki: I should warn you, though -- I heard her practicing her presentation.

Victor: And?

Nikki: I think she has a strong case to make.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Huh. I coached adam. I taught him all the old tricks that I employed for decades when I made tough deals, you know.

Nikki: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: So you think that will give adam the upper hand?

Victor: Who knows? I guess we'll wait and see.

Ashland: I'll start with an easy question, one that's baffled me since I first took your call.

Victoria: Fire away.

Ashland: Why, after divesting newman of its mediA...division, are you suddenly reversing course? Why are you adding another media company to your portfolio?

Victoria: Cyaxares is a totally different animal from our former media division. It's profitable, but its scope and its purpose are completely different from newman.

Ashland: Hmm.

Victoria: It was a distraction, quite frankly.

Ashland: And cyaxares wouldn't be?

Victoria: Your company, if it becomes my company, is going to drive newman's growth. You know, over the years, you've curated quite a stable of properties -- magazines, newspapers, book publishers, all designed specifically for one audience, highly intelligent thought leaders, policymakers, international power brokers. Whoever controls cyaxares will have direct communication with key decision makers all over the globe. And they'll influence the opinions of people shaping the world's economy.

Ashland: Well, when you put it that way, I'm not sure i should let it go.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Well, you just wouldn't want it to fall into the wrong hands.

Ashland: Like adam's?

Victoria: I doubt I need to say much on that score. You've obviously researched my track record, so you're well aware of my brother's history.

Ashland: Indeed. What's more, I know the type -- cut-throat. Wall street is crawling with guys like him.

Victoria: That's no coincidence. It's where he got his start.

Ashland: Billy abbott, on the other hand, has had his share of struggles, but seems to have redeemed himself.

Victoria: I have the highest respect for billy and for lily, and if you choose to sell to them, I think they will do a fine job of growing the company and increasing its revenues.

Ashland: But you have a higher purpose in mind.

Victoria: I suspect that I am exactly the type of buyer you envisioned when you built your company into the powerhouse that it is, someone who sees the real potential for it in a business-to-business space.

Ashland: You know, I have something else scheduled shortly, but I am interested in hearing more of what you have to say. What are your plans for dinner?

Iris: What are you hoping to gain from counseling? Rey, why don't you start?

Rey: Sure. Um...as sharon may have mentioned, we just got married over the holidays.

Iris: She did, indeed.

Rey: We've been incredibly happy...for the most part. But, um, sharon has this ex who's been, uh, problematic, both for me and a lot of other people, especially her youngest daughter -- faith. His name is adam newman, and despite knowing how I feel about the guy, sharon's remained in contact with him, trying to help him and so forth, even when it hasn't been in her... it's been a real stumbling block for us. I'm hoping sharon will use this opportunity to examine her feelings and figure out why it's been so hard for her to let go of someone who is no good for her.

Iris: Sharon, how would you respond to what rey has said?

Sharon: I think that my husband and I have different definitions of what it means to let go.

Iris: How would you define it?

Sharon: Well, I've told adam that I love rey and that my future is with him. I used to counsel adam and his young son and most recently his son's mother, but I stopped doing all of that. Rey was right. It was a bad idea.

Iris: How did adam respond when you set those boundaries?

Sharon: He was fine. And now I'm maintaining what i believe to be a healthy emotional distance.

Rey: And I think she's in denial.

Sharon: Well, I really wish you wouldn't do that. I can describe for myself how i feel. - Oh. - What's going on?

Devon: Here you go.

Elena: Thanks.

Devon: I'm sorry that I lied and tried to send you away when it was my idea to talk in the first place. Just caught me off guard. I get it. I mean, it feels awkward to talk about where we stand, especially after I just told you that i haven't been able to stop thinking about our night together, which is why you left things hanging after you texted me.

Devon: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. I know. I'm not upset with you or anything like that. I'm just really -- I didn't know what to say.

Elena: That says a lot. And it's okay. That's what I came to tell you. I realize that it's probably too late for us. So much damage has been done, and you don't feel the same way that I do. And I don't want to make things uncomfortable for you or for any--

Devon: Well, hang on. Hang on. Hang on. 'Cause you have it backwards. The problem isn't that we don't share the same feelings. It's that we do.

Lily: Billy, look, what's done is done, okay? I think that we did a great job. Hello?

Billy: I can't do this. I can't focus. Until locke makes a decision, I am worthless.

Lily: Okay, billy, listen --

Billy: I need to go for a walk. I'll be back.

Victoria: I'm open to the idea of dinner. If you tell me what type of cuisine you and your wife enjoy, I might recommend some restaurants that suit your taste.

Ashland: Oh, well, I don't think tara will be available. She has her own plans for the evening, chief among them checking out fenmore's flagship store.

Victoria: Well, why don't we arrange for a time when the three of us can get together? I'm sure your wife must take an active interest in your business dealings.

Ashland: She's at home in the financial realm -- very sharp. I don't always take her advice, but I've learned to listen.

Victoria: I'm looking forward to meeting her. In the meantime, you have my number, so if you have any questions about my offer, please don't hesitate to call.

Ashland: Victoria, it has been a pleasure.

Victoria: Likewise, ashland. Enjoy your stay in genoa city.

Ashland: Thank you so much.

Victoria: Thank you.

[ Door closes ]

Iris: Let's set a few ground rules. Speak only for yourself and try not to interrupt. By the same token, it'll help to let us know when you're through talking. Sound good? Sharon, you were describing your process for cutting ties with adam. Did you have more to say on that subject?

Sharon: Um, no. I'm finished for now.

Iris: I understanD. There's a lot of history with him.

Sharon: Yes, there is. And not all of it is negative. Although rey's right -- adam has caused a lot of problems for very many people.

Rey: I'm a cop, so I know an expert manipulator when I see one. Sharon and I broke up once because adam wouldn't know a boundary if it bit him in the -- sorry. I have strong feelings about this, obviously.

Iris: I think I'm getting a clearer picture of what the issues are. Help me to understand what the draw is for you. Why all the back-and-forth if your ex is a source of friction in your marriage?

Sharon: Right now, I'm just exasperated with adam.

Iris: How come?

Sharon: Because he refuses to accept that I've moved on. I mean, if anybody won't let go, it's him.

Iris: Tell me more about that.

Sharon: [ Voice breaking ] Well, rey and I have only been married for a couple of months, and that's right after i survived a very long and difficult battle with cancer, and we should be in our honeymoon phase. And instead, we're here.

Iris: And you hold adam responsible for that?

Sharon: Adam kissed me in a very public place. It wasn't something that i expected or wanted, and it won't happen again, but someone took a photo of us kissing and plastered it all over the internet, which kicked everything back up again, and rey got very upset, which he has every right to be, but that's the reason why he insisted we start couples counseling.

Rey: Yeah, that kiss was the last straw.

Iris: Uh...I want to -- i want to continue with sharon for a moment.

Rey: Sorry.

Iris: That's okay. I hear a lot of frustration in your voice. Would that be fair to say?

Sharon: Absolutely.

Iris: And a strong reluctance on your part to engage in therapy, possibly even resentment.

Sharon: Well, I would say that's too strong of a word.

Iris: How would you characterize it?

Sharon: I just wish that adam hadn't put us in this position.

Iris: Well...he may have set this particular chain of events in motion, but he's not the one who gave you the ultimatum -- the strong request to seek help. Could it be that some of the aggravation you're feeling is actually directed not toward adam, but toward your husband?

Rey: Yes.

Sharon: No.

Rey: There's plenty of aggravation to go around.

Iris: Give me a "for-instance."

Rey: Well, sharon's promised repeatedly to stay away from adam. And I believe when she says it, she's sincere. But she doesn't ask him to stop coming to the coffeehouse she owns. And when they happen to run into each other in town, they always wind up talking.

Iris: Which makes you feel how?

Rey: Ignored. Disrespected.

Iris: If I'm hearing you correctly, this is a recurring pattern.

Rey: Yeah. This guy adam is a bottomless pit of need. And my wife, sharon, is a very caring and compassionate woman, which is one of the things i love about her.

Sharon: Yeah, except when you don'T.

Rey: Except when you waste it on people who don't deserve it, who exploit it, who go out of their way to put a wedge between us.

Iris: Sharon, do you agree with rey that adam doesn't deserve compassion?

Sharon: No, I wouldn't go that far, especially given the situation that he's in right now. He's taking care of his fiancée, who has had a stroke due to an aneurysm. She's completely paralyzed.

Iris: That sounds tragic.

Sharon: It's very tragic and that doesn't make it okay for adam to automatically turn to me for support and I recognized that. And I stepped back, and I told adam that he needs to handle his own problems.

Iris: How did it feel to turn adam away at a time like this?

Sharon: It was very difficult. You know, he's mostly alone in the world.

Rey: Yeah, there are reasons for that. People realize that he's toxic. And they have the good sense to stay away from him.

Abby: The doctors are fertilizing the eggs now, and we just have to wait to hear something.

Mariah: Doesn't this feel strange to you? I mean, something momentous is happening, and I feel like we should be there to, like, bear witness to it.

Ashley: There's gonna be so many momentous occasions for this little one. What about the first day home, first day of school, first christmas, all the holidays, recitals, sporting events?

Abby: And we want you to be a part of all of those occasions.

Mariah: Oh, just try and keep me away.

Ashley: Me too.

Abby: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: Alright, well, that segue failed.

Abby: What?

Mariah: Well, you know, something to mark the occasion. And since the store didn't have any greeting cards that said "happy fertilization day," I had to get creative.

Devon: I'm not over you, either. I'm sure you've guessed that by now.

Elena: I have.

Devon: I've been dealing with that in my mind for a while now. And I just -- I really don't know how to handle things... because I also care about amanda. And I know that that probably doesn't make you feel very good to hear me say it.

Elena: Look, I know it's no one's fault but my own. You would have never fallen for amanda if I hadn't slept with nate. And, honestly, we're both in the same position.

Devon: I know you care about nate.

Elena: He's been so kind and patient. But I can't lie to him and pretend like I don't still have feelings for you.

Devon: I don't know. It just -- it seems like it'd be crazy to imagine us picking up the pieces and just starting over again. I don't really know how we'd do that or how I would forget what you did.

Elena: Yeah. You can'T.

Devon: And even if we were to get back together, as insecure as you were about amanda before, you know, how do you imagine you'd be knowing that we've been together now?

Elena: Yeah. You're right.

[ Sniffles ] Ah... it was, um [Chuckles] Crazy of me to think that we could ever reconcile and make it could stick.

[ Sniffles ]

Devon: I think it might be the best thing for us to just accept the fact that we weren't meant to be. I just want you to know that i always wish you the best.

Elena: [ Exhales sharply ] I had the best. And I threw it away. It's so hard to live with that.

[ Sniffling ]

"The young and the restless"

will continue.

Devon: I'm sorry. I know that what I said wasn't what you wanted to hear.

Elena: No, it's okay. You were speaking from your heart, telling the truth. I couldn't really ask for more than that.

[ Sniffles ]

Devon: You got a little thing on your eye.

Elena: Huh?

Devon: Just a little smudge.

Elena: Mascara?

Devon: Yeah.

Elena: [ Sniffles ] Did I get it?

Devon: No. Here. Let me get it for you. Kinda got it.

Elena: Devon.

Sharon: I know what you think. You think there's something wrong with me, that I need to be needed. See, you're trying to pathologize my sympathy for adam so you can use it to justify telling me that I need to cut off all contact with him.

Rey: We are talking about a man who is actively trying to sabotage our marriage. How is it healthy for you to maintain any kind of relationship with him?

Sharon: Okay, adam is manipulative or prone to drama, but that stems from a profound childhood trauma, which most of he's kept buried all of his life. So, yeah, adam -- he's driven by fear, desperation, but it's clearly not the situation...

Rey: You are making excuses for him again.

Sharon: Yeah, I am taking into consideration adam's past, the good and the bad, and I do that for you, too. You know, I realize that part of the reason you're acting so strongly about all of this is because of what mia put you through, and I make allowances for that.

Iris: And mia is...?

Sharon: Mia is rey's ex-wife who had an affair on him with his younger brother, arturo, ended up pregnant, and now the two of them live together in miami with their child.

Rey: Okay, I don't appreciate you bringing that up right now. We are here to discuss adam.

Sharon: We're here to discuss our marriage, rey, which doesn't exist in a vacuum. We both have a past, we both have prior relationships, and those things have an impact. You can't just decide what part of our history we're going to talk about and which part we're not going to. That's not how therapy works. You have to open a vein.

Iris: So to speak.

Sharon: I believe that rey is judging me more harshly than the situation warrants because of what mia did to him, which i would never do. I'm not mia, and it's not fair.

Iris: It seems to me there's quite a bit that you both need to work through.

Abby: A honey pot! Mariah. Oh, my gosh, I love it. Thank you so much.

Mariah: And to go with it...

Ashley: The honey.

[ Laughs ]

Mariah: Get it? Bees and pollinators? I don't know. I thought pollination was the closest thing to fertilization. It's lame, I know.

Ashley: It's adorable. Thank you. I love it.

Abby: I think it's inspired and charming. Thank you, mariah, for being you.

Mariah: I'm just very excited for this new little bundle to come into the world.

Abby: Thanks to you.

Mariah: Partly. And on that note, I have to go to work.

Abby: Oh, wait a minute. I will walk out with you.

Ashley: Wait a minute. You're not thinking about going to society, are you?

Abby: Why not?

Ashley: Because you just had a procedure. I'm sure this is not what the doctor had in mind, honey.

Abby: I feel fine. And, look, I-I can't just sit around here waiting and -- and worrying. I need to occupy myself.

Ashley: I don't love this.

Abby: I know. But, mom, I can't sit around here waiting for the doctor to call. So you are gonna understand, and you are gonna send me on my way with a smile. Thank you. [ Laughs ]

Ashley: I'm gonna drive you.

Abby: Fine. Mariah, thank you so much for these sweet gifts.

Mariah: I enjoyed giving them. I just realized.

Abby: What?

Mariah: The next time we see each other, I could be pregnant with your baby.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: How was your meeting?

[ Door closes ]

Victoria: Couldn't have gone any better. Locke was impressed. He wants to hear more. I expect that we'll have good news pretty soon.

Nikki: You and victor both.

Victoria: Oh. You talked to dad?

Nikki: Yeah. We met for coffee, and he was just as confident in the pitch that adam gave.

Victoria: How big was the explosion?

Nikki: Now, victoria, I'm sure you know very well how furious your father was when he heard that you put a bid in on that company.

Victoria: It's a big part of why I did it. I wanted to get under his skin.

Nikki: I don't know why we can't just play board games like a normal family. Instead, we have to one-up each other in buying and selling entire corporations.

Victoria: Because it's so much more fun this way.

Nikki: Ugh.

[ Sighs ] Fresh step clean paws.

Sharon: I knew that it would be like this. You kept saying therapy was only gonna take one hour a week. Well, the time that you spend in session is only part of the work. Afterwards, you have to deal with all the emotions and issues that it raises.

Rey: The issue here is that we did a lot of dancing around. But the real issue is... you kept trying to minimize the pull that adam exerts on you. We both know it's about a lot more than just sympathy, sharoN. I assume you're holding back partly out of love. You don't want to hurt my feelings. But you're gonna have to be a lot more open and honest about your feelings if this is gonna work.

Sharon: "This," meaning the counseling? Or our marriage? Rey? Are you okay?

Rey: Um... yeah, I'm just a little, uh... dizzy. It's probably -- probably from the tension. I'm gonna get some water.

Billy: I hope this isn't a bad time.

Victoria: No. Are you kidding me? It's a marvelous time. We can compare notes.

Billy: I take it your pitch went well?

Victoria: Yes, it did. Thank you for asking.

Billy: Well, that's great.

Victoria: Hmm. You're not nearly as cocky as you were when I saw you earlier. What is that about?

Billy: I can't help but

[Clears throat] Think about what you said to me earlier about the reason why you're making a pitch for locke's company. You said it was to protect me. Why'd you say that?

Victoria: Does it matter?

Billy: Yeah. It does matter.

Victoria: Really? Why?

Billy: Because it bothers me that you see me that way, like I am someone that needs protecting.

Victoria: [ Scoffs ] We all need protecting from adam. He's a snake. I know you would do the same thing for me.

Billy: Actually, no, it wouldn't cross my mind... because I believe that you can handle yourself.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Have I offended you?

Billy: Honestly, vick, i thought we were over this. Uh, apparently not because you still think that I am gonna inevitably screw things up and that I need someone to clean up after me. And, um, I've worked really hard to get my act together. And I thought you had more respect for me than that.

Devon: [ Sighs ]

Elena: I can't believe we did this again.

[ Both chuckle ]

[ Sighs ] What are we doing, devon?

Devon: [ Exhales heavily ] I don't know. I really don't know. We're not making things easier for us. I know that.

Elena: No, we're certainly not.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone pings ]

Devon: [ Sighs ]

Elena: Amanda? My heart failure diagnosis changed my priorities.

Devon: Amanda was just texting saying hello. It's not...

Elena: Look, I need time to think about all of this, devon, and I apparently can't do it when I'm around you.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: I see why you were so hesitant about us setting up a time to meet.

Devon: Yeah. Yeah. But, you know, we need to figure out what we're doing.

Elena: You're right. We do. And soon because I'm not gonna be your girl on the side.

Devon: No, I don't want that. I don't want that at all. Just -- we need to make a choice and stick to it.

Elena: You're right. So why don't you call me and we will figure out a time and place to talk, for real, after we both think this through?

Devon: Okay. I'll see ya.

Elena: See ya.

[ Door closes ]

Devon: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: I -- I believe in the progress that you've made. I do.

Billy: You just don't believe that it's gonna last.

Victoria: I-I've seen you take on adam and win. And you've fended off my father's attacks before. But this is the two of them. And they're teaming up to take you down.

Billy: Well, I'm not afraid of them.

Victoria: Well, you should be.

Billy: What makes you think that even if victor and adam get cyaxares that I won't grind them to dust either way?

Victoria: But that's what I'm trying to avoid. I just... I don't want to see you goaded into another pointless feud with adam. I've seen what it does to you. It twists you up inside, and you lose all perspective. I don't want to see you get bogged down in the muck again.

Billy: Why does it matter to you?

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Look -- I mean, look, it's -- it's free advice. Treat it accordingly.

Billy: No, it's more than that, victoria. You're telling me that you're taking on my father for my sake.

Victoria: Yes, billy, that's just my idea of a good time.

Billy: No. It's really confusing, okay? You're confusing the hell out of me here.

Victoria: I don't mean to.

Billy: When we broke up, you told me that you were done. You were not gonna waste any more time saving me from myself.

Victoria: I know what I said.

Billy: Then what changed? Why would you do this? Why would you take on your father? You know that he's not gonna forgive you for this.

Victoria: It was worth it.

Billy: Why? To protect me? The one guy that couldn't protect you? The guy that hurt you over and over? The guy that broke your heart? Why would you do that?

Victoria: Yes.

Billy: Why?

Victoria: Because I still love you!

Sharon: Hey. You leaving? I really thought that we could talk some more.

Rey: Yeah, I-I need to get to the station.

Sharon: Are you still feeling dizzy?

Rey: Uh...the water helped. It'S...just stress. I'm sure it'll pass. Uh, okay, now, as far as counseling goes, I know I am asking a lot from you. This was only our first session. But I am willing to keep at it if you are. Whew.

Sharon: Rey, what's wrong?

Rey: I don't know. It's back. I'm -- I'm feeling dizzy again.

Sharon: Well, sit down on the couch.

Rey: [ Exhaling heavily ] Is it cold in here? I'm feeling chills.

Sharon: Rey. Rey? Rey!
