[ Door opens, keys jangle ]
[ Door shuts ]
Sharon: Glad you're home.
Rey: I thought you'd be in bed by now.
Sharon: I waited up for you.
Rey: [ Sighs ] You didn't have to do that.
Sharon: I couldn't have gotten to sleep, even if i wanted to. You weren't home for very long, and then you had to get back to the station. So, we never got to discuss you walking in on my conversation with adam.
[ Keys clank on table ]
Rey: What do you have to say about that?
Sharon: Adam was emotional about chelsea's condition, and he was just thanking me for my help. But I'm aware that it looked more intimate than that. So, I need to know what you're thinking.
Adam: Hey. How's chelsea doing?
Meredith: She's sleeping peacefully.
Adam: Good. I'm having trouble winding down. So, I'm gonna head out for a while. But just give me a call if you need anything.
Meredith: I will, but it should be a quiet night. How long will you be?
Adam: Uh, it's hard to say. I'm not sure where I'm going yet. But, uh, I guess I'll know when I get there.
Nate: You okay?
Elena: Yeah. I woke up, and I couldn't get back to sleep. So, I came here to listen to the waves. I was hoping they would be a sort of lullaby to help me doze off, but... as beautiful and as soothing as they are... they didn't do the trick.
Nate: [ Sighs ] I'm surprised you're having trouble relaxing. We're a few thousand miles away from genoa city, completely unplugged from the stresses back home. And you're in good company, if i do say so myself.
Elena: That's all very true.
Nate: Maybe you should come back to bed and fall asleep in the arms of a man who adores you.
Elena: Now, why didn't i think of that?
Nate: Because something's bothering you.
Elena: I just had a dream, and it sort of shook me up.
Nate: Was it about devon?
Devon: [ Sighs ]
Amanda: What are you doing down here? Did I scare you away? Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete,

Rey: I've been thinking a lot about what I saw. And I've tried to stay logical and level-headed about it, to do what you do -- compartmentalize, separate your feelings from your desire to do your work, from your past with adam, separate my distrust for him based on his long history from what he may or may not be doing this time. I've tried to siphon my feelings from adam being your ex out of the entire equation, but seeing him here earlier in our home, holding your hand? Well, that blew all my careful calculations to hell.
Sharon: Well, that must have felt awful.
Rey: It doesn't even begin to describe how it feels. All I want is this pariah out of our lives. As your husband, as a police detective, as a person who just believes in basic human decency, adam disgusts me.
Sharon: Okay, I can understand why you feel that way.
Rey: I have been stuffing down my feelings. I have respect for your need to make your own decisions. But those decisions have made me realize that this isn't entirely one-sided. Every time adam reaches out to you, you go along with whatever he wants. You prioritize his needs above everything else. You choose adam every single time.
Adam: Well, I guess I'm not the only one who wasn't ready to turn in tonight.
Victor: My goodness. Nice to see you, son. Please have a seat. How's chelsea?
Adam: There's been, uh, no change in her condition since she came home.
Victor: You know, it takes a while to get back from a stroke. Got to be patient. It's a long process. But you got to be strong and know that she'll be alright again.
Adam: You are extolling the virtue of patience, huh? That's not exactly your forte, pop.
Victor: Not in our genes, is it, to be patient? How are you doing, son?
Adam: I'm keeping myself together for chelsea's sake, but, uh, inside I'm all over the place. I'm scared. I'm furious that this happened to her. You know, one minute I'm filled with hope and then the next guilt and despair. If it wasn't for sharon grounding me, I would probably be all over the place.
Victor: Hmm. What does sharon have to do with any of this? How is she involved?
Devon: There's a lot of different ways that I could describe what we just did, but the word "scary" is not the one that comes to mind.
Amanda: Then why'd you run off?
Devon: You were sleeping, and I was thirsty and to rehydrate so I can be prepared for whatever else the night has in store.
Amanda: Oh, you're assuming the night's not over.
Devon: I mean, you're up. I'm up.
Amanda: I like the way you think. I could go for one of those.
Devon: What, water or me?
Amanda: Both. I did say I wanted to learn more about you. So, why don't we circle back to your body art for my next lesson in all things devon?
Devon: Well, like I'm your professor, and you're my student?
Amanda: You like that?
Devon: Yeah, I do. Where would you like me to begin?
Amanda: Well, you tell me... professor.
Elena: Why would you think devon is on my mind?
Nate: Because you accidentally called me by his name earlier.
Elena: Alright, but that was a mistake, and I apologized, and you told me you understood.
Nate: I did, but I couldn't help noticing something in you changed after that happened. It was like you were uncomfortable but trying really hard not to be.
Elena: I'm perfectly comfortable!
Nate: I'm wondering if even when you're not actively thinking about devon that he's still somewhere in your psyche. It would make sense, given the depth of your relationship and the impact he's had on your life.
Elena: Nate, it was just a slip of the tongue. You don't need to read too much into this.
Nate: I know you keep saying that, but it's made me wonder. Is this all happening too fast for you? It's a new year.
Elena: No! I don't think that we're moving too fast. I've been pursuing this as much as you have, and I think I've been very clear about how i feel.
Nate: But it also wasn't that long ago you were saying we needed to move slowly. So, I just wanted to make sure.
Elena: Right, but it was also my idea to take this trip. I'm happy. Running away with you was exactly what I needed.
Nate: Yet you can't sleep. Why do I feel like there's something you're not telling me?
Elena: Fine. You want to know the truth? You want to know what I really want? I want you to take me back to bed and make love to me until the sun comes up.
Devon: Alright, so, the man with the guitar represents my two dads, being neil, the one that took me in, and then tucker, the one that helped me find my path in music. And they both love music as much as I do. So...
Amanda: It's beautiful.
Devon: Thanks.
Amanda: What about, um, that one, up there?
Devon: This big one here?
Amanda: Mm-hmm.
Devon: This here represents hamilton-winters and all the different media that it encompasses. And actually hilary helped me design what it should look like a while back. So, it's kind of like my connection to her, too.
Amanda: I think it's fascinating that you have turned your body into a canvas to tell your story.
Devon: Yeah, it's just a way to express myself and stay in tune with the things that i believe in and things that i love.
Amanda: What about, um, the bull?
Devon: The bull? The bull is strength.
Amanda: Oh.
Devon: Represents the ability to charge through any obstacle. I've experienced a lot of hardships and a lot of loss in life, and it's just a nice reminder that I've made it through it all, and I have the strength to keep moving forward.
Amanda: I think that's my favorite.
Devon: Does it speak to you?
Amanda: It does. Oh, it's, um, getting kind of warm in here. Do you feel warm?
Devon: Well, now that you mention it, yeah, it is a little hot in here.
Amanda: I think I'm gonna need more than water to cool me down.
Devon: Huh. What exactly do you have in mind?
Adam: Chelsea's mental state needs to be addressed hand in hand with her physical condition. So, sharon's helping with the psychological aspect of her recovery.
Victor: Hmm. Well, I'm aware of how the mind-and-body connection works. But isn't there someone more qualified as a therapist than sharon?
Adam: There's no one that knows us better than sharon does.
Victor: And of course this pulls her back into your orbit, doesn't it? Funny how that happens, you know? Is it because she is drawn to you, or do you pull her back into your life? Is that it?
Adam: I-I don't even know how to answer that.
Victor: Really?
[ Laughs ]
Adam: I guess we both still care about each other's well-being and happiness.
Victor: So, it's two-sided?
Adam: I suppose so.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Adam: That's usually how friendship works.
Victor: Oh, yeah. So, it's a friendship?
Adam: Yes!
Victor: Ah.
Adam: What else would it be?
Victor: [ Laughing ] I don't know! Only you know that.
Sharon: I don't always choose adam. I choose you! I married you!
Rey: But when he wants or needs anything, you never turn him down. You've proven that over and over again.
Sharon: Okay, I'm sorry you're upset. But right now, I'm just trying to help chelsea. What you walked in on was an innocent --
Rey: Sharon, please, please. Just stop! Stop! You want to hear what I'm thinking, and I'm telling you. I understood when you went to vegas to help adam get his memory back and bring him home to genoa city. I trusted you when you said you were the only one who could break through to him, and i believed in the strength of our relationship. But it didn't hold. We broke up because you became more and more drawn to him, because you couldn't stay away.
Sharon: No, okay. I -- I ended things with adam almost immediately because i realized that what we had was better and stronger, and you made me happy. See, I chose you!
Rey: I remember. And I was so relieved and thrilled that I was gonna get to spend my life with the woman of my dreams. And you had finally put adam behind you, and I was convinced that once we found our way back to one another, we could withstand anything.
Sharon: We can.
Rey: [ Sighs ]
Sharon: We have.
Rey: When connor was struggling, I understood why you wanted to work with him. The boy was in pain, and you had the ability to ease his suffering. And when adam had to face his own childhood trauma, i understood once again that maybe you were the only one that could help him. I supported you when you followed him to kansas. And when we came back home, you lied to me! You took off, and you snuck off and tracked him down to his hotel room.
Sharon: I should have told you the truth. That was my mistake.
Rey: Yeah! And you know what? I accepted that, too. I guess I didn't realize the pressure that adam was putting on our relationship until he finally said he was leaving town. And when he said that, it was like an incredible weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I thought, "oh, wow, thank god. This is over." But it's not over! It's never over! Adam isn't going anywhere.
Sharon: Chelsea's stroke changed his plans.
Rey: Right. And after she recovers, he'll find some other reason not to put distance between the two of you.
Sharon: Even if he decides to stay in town, I'm not gonna be spending any time with him.
Rey: Oh, my god! Sharon, time and again, you've promised me to stay away from adam, but it's never true. He always comes back for more, and you always let him! My question is why? Sweetie, I'm sorry i missed your game.
Sharon: Rey, wait. Okay, it's true I said that i was done with adam, and yes, it's true. He is back in my life, but that's only because chelsea is going through a horrible medical crisis, and I'm in a unique position to help her.
Rey: I feel for chelsea, too. And I want her to get all the help that she can get. But I'm pretty sure she wouldn't choose you as her therapist. In fact, I think she'd prefer anyone but you.
Sharon: Well, that's exactly the point.
Rey: What, that you and adam believe that your history is a positive motivating force?
Sharon: No, there are cases where emotional provocation has worked. I truly believe that this will work for her.
Rey: Sharon, we both know that this isn't purely professional. You never answered my question. Why do you insist on intertwining your life with adam's? I figured it's one of two things. Either you're too weak-willed and susceptible to his svengali influence... which I refuse to believe. Or you are getting something out of this. You want to be the one to save him, to support him, the one he can count on above everyone else. It almost sounds like wedding bells.
Sharon: T-there's no comparison between what I feel for you and what I feel for adam. I love you! You must know that.
Rey: I don't doubt that you love me. But I also think that on some level... you're still in love with adam. And what scares me the most is that it's the kind of love that will never completely go away.
Adam: I am in love with chelsea.
Victor: Uh-huh.
Adam: Sharon and I, we are just friends.
Victor: Yeah?
Adam: Okay? And I know by the look on your face that you don't believe that, but I really -- I don't want to hear any accusations right now, please?
Victor: I'm not accusing you of a damn thing, adam. You know, it's, uh... just funny how you've always found yourself back to sharon.
Adam: There's only one woman in my life.
Victor: Uh-huh. Can I be honest with you?
Adam: Sure. Why not?
Victor: I've never trusted chelsea. You know, she has a history of deception... and self-preservation. Having said that, I'm also aware that she is a good mother to connor.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Victor: And she was there for you when you thought your world was falling apart.
Adam: That's right. She has been there for me over and over again, when I needed her. So, that's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna be there for her now.
Victor: And yet there's this primal connection between you and sharon, right? I mean, you have your fights and your arguments and back and forth, but you always seem to get together again. You know? It's dangerous, my boy.
Sharon: What do you want me to say? That adam matters to me? He does. We do have a history together. But you are my husband. We share a life. And when I said my vows, I meant every word of it. So, now, for you to say that you don't believe me, that not only hurts my feelings, but you know what? It's insulting! So, I'm not gonna have this argument about adam with you again!
Rey: Why are suddenly being so defensive? I thought we were having a frank conversation. I am drawing a line in the sand. I don't want you to see adam again -- not to treat chelsea, not for emotional support, or any of the other reasons that you and adam come up with. I know I don't have a right to give you an ultimatum, but I am doing so, anyway, because I need you to put my needs ahead of his, because I need to matter more than him! If our marriage means to you what it means to me, you will do this. And if you can't -- or you won't -- then we will both know that this bond that you share with adam will never be broken and that this marriage was a mistake!
Sharon: You are threatening our marriage because you walked in on adam and I holding hands for a moment?!
Rey: This isn't -- this isn't about hand-holding, sharon! This is about everything that I've seen between the two of you since adam first showed up in town. Oh, poor adam always with some crisis, always with some rationale to pull you into him. And you never deny him -- ever! -- Despite my concerns. Hell, despite your children's own fears and objections.
Sharon: Wait a minute. Don't go there. That's not fair.
Rey: None of this is fair! I've tried my best to be supportive. I've loved you with everything that I have. How much more do you expect me to take?! Are you in denial?! Or are you just lying to me when you say that there's nothing going on?
Sharon: Rey, I'm not lying to you. Adam and I are not having an affair. Nothing like that is happening.
Rey: Yeah. Well, not every betrayal is sexual.
[ Voice breaking ] Sometimes the ones that aren't are the most painful.
Amanda: [ Sighs ] That hit the spot.
Devon: [ Laughs ] I really didn't think that ice cream was where you were headed, but I have to admit that this was a pretty sweet idea.
Amanda: [ Laughs ] No. No, you did not just say that.
Devon: I did! Sure did. You're gonna learn that I'm full of corny jokes.
Amanda: Well, I could not let tonight go any further until i checked out your ice-cream selection. There can be a lot of red flags in a guy's choice of ice cream.
Devon: Really? Is that right?
Amanda: Mm-hmm. For example, vanilla equals boring. Chocolate is good. But if it's got all of these chunks and flavorings, then the guy is preoccupied with all of the bells and whistles. He's not satisfied with the simple pleasures in life.
Devon: Sure.
[ Laughs ]
Amanda: And neapolitan?
Devon: Uh-huh?
Amanda: Total player. I mean, isn't it obvious? And...
Devon: Yeah?
Amanda: ...If you ever go into a man's freezer, and he's got mint chocolate chip, run! Serial killer.
Devon: Boy! Geez! I didn't know any of this stuff.
Amanda: Well, now you do.
Devon: Yeah. So, this was a test is what you're saying.
Amanda: I wouldn't put it that way, but you pass.
Devon: That's good to hear.
Amanda: You know, I, um, i didn't know where tonight was gonna end up when it started, but I'm pretty happy with where it went.
Devon: This all seems like it's inevitable.
Amanda: Is it because of how we got to know each other so well over these past few months, or is it because -- I'm just gonna come out and say it. Um...
Devon: Hmm?
Amanda: The chemistry between us?
Devon: Chemistry? Yeah. I think we have a lot of that, don't we?
Amanda: [ Laughing ] Right! Another test that you passed with flying colors.
Devon: [ Laughs ]
Amanda: [ Sighs ] This night has been so incredible. And, um, I am gonna kick myself if I ruin it by asking this. But is this when I ask what this all means?
Elena: Mm. Now look who can't sleep. And you have clothes on.
Nate: [ Sighs ] Thinking.
Elena: About what?
Nate: A lot of things...
[ Sighs ] ...Including the last few times we've seen devon. There was something about each one -- the vibe or subtle body language. I noticed it, but it didn't completely click with me until now.
Elena: What exactly are you saying?
Nate: You've been giving me that same vibe since we've been here. Even though we've escaped to relax, you're restless. You've been evading my questions about you and devon with sex. This last time was more than just passionate. There was an urgency, almost a desperation. I think you're hiding something. You got some sort of secret.
Elena: What kind of secret would I have?
Nate: The kind we had when we first got together, when we were hiding what happened from devon. I know the signs. You slept with devon, didn't you?
Elena: Yes.
Adam: Hey, you're right, dad. Sharon and I, we've had many ups and downs. But chelsea and I have, too, okay? All I know is I want her to get better. And I'm tired. And I don't want to have this conversation tonight.
Victor: All I want you to know is that I'll always be there for you, son, if I may still call you son. I know that you intended to sever all ties with my family and the name.
Adam: You are just, you're relentless. You're just asking all the tough questions tonight.
Victor: I know that not too long ago, you, um, changed your name... from adam newman to adam wilson. Does that mean you want to just part ways with me, the newman family, newman name? I think I have a right to know.
Adam: Whatever I choose to call myself, I can never escape being your son, with all the bad and the good that comes with it.
Victor: I'm your father. Okay? So, I will never give up on you. Just know that I've gone through lots of ups and downs in my life. But you got to be tough. Chelsea will be alright, and you'll be alright. Good night, my boy.
[ Raps table ]
Adam: Good night.
[ Door opens, shuts ]
Sharon: Adam? I'm a performer.
Adam: What are you doing here?
Sharon: Um... I just went for a drive, and somehow I ended up here.
Adam: [ Chuckles ] I did the same.
Sharon: Well, I was, um, just gonna get a drink to calm my nerves.
Adam: Why? What's wrong?
Sharon: Um, I didn't know you were here.
Adam: Okay.
Sharon: But I was preparing to call you because I have some news, and so, I guess it's just as well we ran into each other.
Adam: Alright, well, now you're starting to make me nervous. So, what did you want to tell me?
Sharon: I'm done treating chelsea. I can't -- I can't do it anymore.
Adam: I understand.
Sharon: Really? I wasn't sure how you'd feel about it.
Adam: No, you obviously have been doing some soul-searching, and so have I.
Sharon: And you don't think i was helping chelsea, after all?
Adam: I just, um, I've been questioning my motives about asking you to be chelsea's therapist in the first place. I mean, of course I wanted to see if you could help make progress, but maybe I wanted you to come to the penthouse to talk to me, to comfort me and reassure me and give me a counterbalance to the pain and anger I was feeling about chelsea's condition. Seeing you was something to look forward to. You were there to treat her, but you made me feel better, too. It's completely selfish, and i put you in a really horrible position. But that's kind of my specialty, right? I'm sorry. I truly am.
Sharon: I appreciate the apology, but I'm not so sure i deserve it. I had my own reasons for treating chelsea.
Adam: What is it about us? We can't quite figure this thing out, whatever this thing is.
Amanda: No matter what it is, I've enjoyed every minute being here with you. I just -- I want to anticipate what tomorrow will be like.
Devon: Yeah, no, i understand. And if you think that this is just some kind of rebound situation, it's definitely not. This is not about us just having fun. I'd like to think that it's the start of something more between us. And I don't -- I don't know if we should put labels on it.
Amanda: Oh, me neither. I just...I know that we both have reasons to be cautious about getting too serious too soon.
Devon: Right, right. So, let's not overthink it, you know? Let's not worry about if we're moving too fast, too slow. Just, you know, know that whatever happens is meant to happen without any expectations or conditions. It's just two people figuring out how to move forward together.
Amanda: I like the sound of that.
Devon: Besides, you think i would share my butter-pecan ice cream with a woman that i didn't want to get to know more?
Amanda: Mmm, butter pecan -- the perfect choice.
Devon: Oh, I know it is because we're on the same page.
Amanda: Yeah, yeah. But there is one more thing that I have to say.
Elena: I'm so sorry, nate. And I know those words don't mean much to you right now.
Nate: When did it happen?
Elena: During the storm. It's where I was. I was -- I was at devon'S.
Nate: I had a feeling, when you didn't say where you were.
Elena: I was -- I was dropping off a package that got mistakenly delivered to the clinic. And when the weather turned, I-i got stuck there. Devon and I got to talking, and we had one of those conversations that we should have had months ago. You know, he wasn't angry anymore, and I didn't have any guilt. A-and the more that we talked, the more we realized that we needed to figure out if there was anything left between us, figure out if we were throwing everything away prematurely.
Nate: And? Was it a goodbye for you and devon, or is it a goodbye for you and me?
Elena: Devon and I both realized that we're in different places now, and we can't go backwards!
Nate: But how can you know that for sure? I mean, you called me by his name a few hours ago. You said, "devon, you filled my heart tonight." Your heart!
Elena: Look -- I understand that you're angry --
Nate: I'm not angry. I know I am in no position to judge anyone after everything that's happened, but it doesn't mean I'm not hurt.
Elena: Of course you are. And I'm sorry that I hurt you.
Nate: It seems like you don't know what you want right now. And all I know is... I got some thinking to do. I'm gonna take a walk by the beach.
Elena: [ Sighs ]
[ Door slams ]
Amanda: I like you so much. And I care about you. And I believe that you care about me, too.
Devon: Yeah.
Amanda: But in the back of my mind, I can't help wondering if you are completely over elena.
Devon: Well, what would make you think that I'm not?
Amanda: Nothing that I can put my finger on, okay? And I know I'm probably just being overly cautious. But you two meant a lot to each other, right? And that doesn't just go away. And I don't want to put my heart on the line and then wake up one morning and find out that you're not over your ex.
Devon: It's not gonna happen. That's my past, and it's in my past. And I promise you that I am ready to move on with you.
Amanda: Well, then... let's go back to bed.
Sharon: I can't -- I can't discuss this with you now.
Adam: You mean us?
Sharon: Adam, there is no "us." Okay? Whatever happened in the past, it just has to stay in the past. I can't keep looking backwards. All I want to do is look forward. You know, I started out this year with so much to celebrate. I got through my cancer treatments. I'm now cancer-free. And I...married a wonderful man. I-I have a new lease on life. We have every reason to be joyous and celebrating, but I... my teenage daughter is hiding things from me, and... the man I love is questioning whether I still love you.
Adam: Why would rey wonder if you still love me?
Sharon: I-I can'T. I-I won'T.
