Nick: Here we go! Take dark horse. In fact, I'm gonna throw in that framed photo of my son, because trust me when I say this -- that is as close as you will ever get to him!

Adam: You play by my rules, i will ensure chloe stays dead to the world. And then we all can live happily ever after.

Kevin: [ Groans ] Damn it! Damn it!

Michael: Looks like you've got some explaining to do.

Kevin: What the hell is wrong with you? You followed me?

Michael: You were acting shady as hell, so, yes, of course I followed you. For your own safety.

Kevin: For your own curiosity, you mean.

Michael: Look, I knew you were lying, and you were. So what is this place, and why are we here?

Kevin: Get out.

Michael: [ Scoffs ] Kevin, that's not hap--

Kevin: No, I mean it. Just leave and forget you and i were ever in this room.

Michael: Oh, like there isn't a red flag in that statement.

Kevin: No, mikey, there isn'T. So just put your lawyer brain on pause.

Michael: Listen, I understand it hasn't been easy for you, coming back to town, and -- and that you might need some, you know, time by yourself. But, uh, this would not have been my first choice for a man cave.

Kevin: Please leave. It's for your own good.

Michael: Tell me what kind of trouble you're in. Look, together, it doesn't matter. I'm here. We can deal with this.

Kevin: You don't want to be involved in this. I'm trying to protect you.

Michael: Well, that's a switch, because usually it's my job to protect you.

Kevin: Just go. I'm handling it.

Michael: No, obviously not. So tell me what's happening.

Kevin: I can't!

Michael: Why are you really in genoa city?!

Kevin: Michael!

Michael: Kevin!

Kevin: [ Huffs ] It's chloe, okay?

Michael: What about chloe?

Kevin: I'm in town because of chloe. She's alive.

Michael: Mm-hmm. Chloe is alive?

Adam: I turned down the job. Again. If dad didn't choose you to be his successor, that's not my fault. And I'm tired of being on the receiving end of your rants.

Victoria: I'm not here to fight. I actually thought that we could have an adult conversation. Insult-free.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] That's a refreshing approach. What did you have in mind?

Victoria: I think that we need to de-escalate things. Our family is heading for an all-out war. One that we may never recover from. Now that we all know that dad is sick, I think that we should try to put our grievances to bed and come together.

Adam: Why do I feel like "coming together" is gonna involve some sacrifice on my part that will benefit you and nick?

Victoria: Your attempt to trade dark horse for christian failed, and you have no interest in running this company.

Adam: Hmm. That's quick to judge.

Victoria: Doubtful.

Adam: I'm a businessman, victoria. Just 'cause I chose not to do it at newman doesn't mean I'm gonna stop altogether.

[ Tapping fingers ] Nah, you're right. I have no interest in running dark horse. Real estate is boring. But I do like this fancy office. Top-of-the-line coffee maker in the kitchen. I get to send out memos on this cool stationery.

Victoria: I gave you that money to get you out of our lives, not for you to hurt nick.

Adam: I know that. You were my unwitting asset. Or what is that other phrase -- "useful idiot." Oops. Sorry. That slipped out.

Victoria: I want to make a deal. What will it take?

Adam: Look, I appreciate you trying to mediate this cain-and-abel thing that nick and I have going on. But my answer is no. Dark horse was just the first step in geting what I want.

Elena: Great. He's a natural. He wiped the dust off, got out there, and just did it.

Nate: And his, uh, voice?

Elena: Didn't falter at all. If you compare it to some of his first live gigs, couldn't tell the difference.

Elena: Yeah. It's funny -- him being on the stage is exactly where he belongs.

Nate: Man, I'm so happy he's able to do what he loves again.

Elena: Me too.

Nate: Think that means you can get back to doing what you love, too.

Elena: What do you mean?

Nate: That's why I was calling earlier. I spoke to the hiring manager about the emt position you interviewed for. Asked if I could deliver the news myself.

Elena: Ah, so you thought a friend should deliver the bad news?

Nate: You got the job.

Elena: Really?

Nate: Yeah.

Devon: She did. I do know that, and I'm -- I'm happy that they worked everything out. But I didn't ask you to come here so we could talk business.

Devon: [ Laughs ]

Mariah: I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I am very happy with my generous salary. Um... all right. Continue.

Devon: So, I-I explained why I did it, and I apologized to her, but she told me that she wanted to re-evaluate our relationship, and then she left to go on tour with jett, and i haven't spoken to her since.

Mariah: So you're not sure how to patch things up?

Devon: No. I really want to, but I don't know --

Mariah: But you don't understand why she's so upset? And maybe you think she's overreacting a little bit?

Devon: Right.

Mariah: Wrong. You royally screwed up.

Nate: [ Sighs ]

Elena: Devon paid off my student loans.

Nate: Okay?

[ Scoffs ] What a monster?

Elena: It wasn't about the money, per se. It was about the fact that he went behind my back and didn't talk to me about it. You know, I'm independent, and I've always paid my own way. And now I'm living at his house rent-free. And the night that we finally, you know, he paid off my loans, and it made me feel really weird, you know?

Nate: Okay, okay. I can see how you might have taken it that way. But that is not devon's M.O. At all.

Elena: Well, I tried to tell him how I felt about it, and i could tell he didn't understand.

Nate: I think you guys are misunderstanding each other. Devon's family, so I might be a bit biased, but maybe I can help you see where he's coming from.

Michael: So... what evidence do you have that, uh, chloe might still be alive?

Kevin: I've been living with her for the past two years.

Michael: [ Scoffs ]

Kevin: She faked her death. I found out right after the funeral, when she opened up her own casket and popped out.

Michael: Like a horror movie.

Kevin: Scared me so bad I passed out. And it just got crazier from there.

Michael: It got crazier...

Kevin: Okay, the details aren't important, but I created a new identity for her, and we've been living in portland ever since.

Michael: So, when you said that you needed to leave town to start a new life, you weren't kidding. Now, if I would have know, if I would have --

Kevin: I know! I hated lying to you, but I had to protect bella and chloe.

Michael: Yeah, I get that! I get that! So you guys were there, just living happily ever after?!

Kevin: Until you called and said adam was alive.

Michael: Well, I didn't know chloe was alive, too! And only one person should be allowed to come back from the dead at a time!

Kevin: Yeah. [ Sighs ] I knew she was gonna find out about adam eventually, and I thought that she should hear it from me.

Michael: Oh. And then she lost it?

Kevin: No. Actually, I thought she handled it really well. She didn't even argue when i said we should move out of our house to be safe.

[ Sighs ] Then she disappeared.

Michael: She went after adam again.

Kevin: When I heard he'd been shot, I knew it was her.

Michael: And he survived again.

Kevin: Yeah, he -- he got some thug in vegas to confess to the shooting so he could carry out his own version of justice.

Michael: Why? What did he do? Is chloe okay?

Kevin: He's been holding her captive. So I came here to get her back.

Michael: Wait, so -- so you came here to get her back. You think he was keeping her in this room? But she escaped?

Kevin: We-- no.

Michael: Then why are we here, kevin?

Kevin: [ Inhales sharply ] That -- that's a whole other story.

Victoria: You know, it doesn't have to be like this.

Adam: I couldn't agree more. None of this had to happen.

Victoria: Then make it right.

Adam: I never made it wrong, victoria. I merely did what I had to do. What any parent would do.

Victoria: There is still time to turn things around.

Adam: If I give dark horse back to nick, we're suddenly gonna be some big, happy family?

Victoria: It would be the first good step in putting things behind us.

Adam: You're just trying to assuage your guilt. The question is, how far are you willing to go?

Victoria: Try me.

Adam: Okay. Uh... how about I give nick his company back and I take the C.E.O. Job at newman. Would that work for you as a fair exchange?

Victoria: That's not happening.

Adam: Mm. So, basically, you are willing to do anything to help nick, as long as it doesn't interfere with your own ambition.

Victoria: Ambition is not a dirty word. Not in our family, it's not.

Adam: Mm.

Nick: Adam! Where are you?!

Adam: Someone got my special delivery.

Nick: You're lucky I don't shove those papers right down your throat.

Adam: Afternoon, nicholas.

Victoria: What's wrong? What happened?

Nick: Adam's suing me for full custody of christian. Oh my goodness!

Mariah: You have to know that your money is always going to be a factor in your relationships.

Devon: Yeah, but I don't sit down on the first date and broadcast how much money I have. I don't do that on any dates.

Mariah: No, I know, because you're an amazing, grounded, wonderful guy, and anybody that ends up in a relationship with you is going to be very fortunate because of the overall great guy that you are.

Devon: I appreciate you saying that, but I'm not following. What'S...?

Mariah: Okay.

[ Sighs ] Let's say that you invite someone on a first date...

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Mariah: ...And you go to the gcac. Well, you guys are sitting down, and she comments on how nice the place is, and why you chose it. Well, you're not gonna lie. So you're five minutes in, and she already knows that you own the joint. And then let's say you go on a second date, and you choose society. Well, then, that same process starts over again.

Devon: Mm.

Mariah: Let's say it goes well, and then she goes back to your penthouse --

Devon: I get it. I get you.

Mariah: And even if none of those scenarios occur, people still love an online search. Which brings me back to the very first thing I said, which is, your money is always going to be a factor in your relationships. And women are gonna treat it very, very differently. I mean, hilary saw it as the billion-dollar frosting on the cake.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: And when you and i were dating, I could never reciprocate any of the grand gestures that you did, and I was okay with that. Others may not be.

Devon: Right. I don't expect elena to reciprocate anything, though.

Mariah: I know that. And you know what, she probably does, too. But that was a big, bold move. I mean, right out of the gate. You guys are still just getting to know each other. And it's not like you took her on a fancy date or you bought her a purse. I mean, you paid off thousands of dollars of debt. And I know that your heart is in the right place, but... you kind of took away her agency. It's like what you wanted to do for her mattered more than what she wanted.

Devon: All right. I -- the last thing I want to do is make her feel powerless.

Mariah: But that's kind of what you did. And I very much doubt she wants to be indebted to the guy that she's dating.

Devon: So you're saying I made her feel like we're not equals. And then, when she tried to tell me, I didn't hear it.

Mariah: Yeah.

Devon: Yeah.

Mariah: You hear it now?

Devon: Yeah, I do.

Mariah: Good.

Devon: I do.

Mariah: Well, then, uh, quit talking to me and go find her.

Devon: I just hope it's not too late. Thank you so much for talking to me.

Devon: [ Smooches ] Bye.

Nate: Devon is generous with his money because he knows what it's like to be broke. He had nothing until he went to live with neil and dru.

Elena: Yeah, he told me. And I can appreciate that. But that doesn't mean he gets to make decisions about my life.

Nate: I get it. And I'm surprised devon doesn't, because he's been where you are. When he inherited all that money from katherine chancellor, he struggled with it. Felt guilty because he didn't earn it. Then he realized how much good he could do with it, and his feelings changed. Devon helps kids and strangers. He paid off everyone's layaway account at fenmore's last christmas.

Elena: And all of that is amazing. But I'm not a kid. Nor am I a stranger in need. I'm his partner.

Nate: He probably thought he was helping you the same way he helped jett. You didn't have a problem with that.

Elena: That's not the same. Jett doesn't make out with devon.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] All I'm saying is, devon has a giving spirit. Like neil. That's just who he is. I just can't see devon doing what he did to make you feel small or to get one over on you.

Elena: And you're probably right. But he still discounted my feelings. And if I have a problem with something, he has to be able to hear it. Otherwise... it's a deal-breaker.

Nate: Okay, here's what I would say -- go talk it out with him. Give him one more chance.

Kevin: I needed some leverage to get chloe back. So I came to town, I laid low, and I spied on adam.

Michael: [ Groans ] I don't like the way this is going.

Kevin: I saw him with phyllis a few times and I figured they were a couple. So I kidnapped her. To trade for chloe.

Michael: What the hell? Kevin! Phyllis and adam aren't a couple. They're like two human porcupines! It would never work!

Kevin: I'm aware of that now.

Michael: You couldn't get your facts straight before you [Inhales deeply] Committed multiple felonies?!

Kevin: I told you you didn't want to know.

Michael: Well, for once, you're right!

Nick: If you gave a damn about this kid you suddenly want to father, you would not be ripping him away from his home and the people who love him.

Adam: I admit, you have been a decent stand-in for me. But now it is time for christian to know his real dad.

Nick: No, his real dad reads him books every night, and takes him to ball games while you've been skulking around in vegas doing god knows what.

Adam: You're right. And the years I lost only made me realize how big a void there is in my life, how badly I want to know my kid, and how important it is for him to know me.

Nick: I am never giving him up, ever.

Adam: My lawyers will be asking for a new dna test. I will prove that he's mine.

Victoria: You're a bastard.

Adam: Oh. You're still here. And I see that the gloves are off. I've hired the best lawyers money can buy, and I can afford to fight for as long as it takes. Because I have a brand-new, almost embarrassingly huge infusion of cash.

Nick: No amount of money will ever buy you my son.

Victoria: What is wrong with you? This is how you show your love for christian? It's so twisted!

Adam: Hey, I made nick a perfectly acceptable offer. He refused. So he left me no choice but to take him to court.

Victoria: You always have a choice. And you chose to hurt him in the worst possible way. And christian! Think about that.

Adam: Okay, christian is all that I think about.

Victoria: This is gonna come back to haunt you.

Adam: I see that you have moved on from insults to threats. And that's fine. Because I'm nothing but grateful to you. You turned everything around for me. I owe all of this to you.

Nick: Michael, it's me. I need to talk to you now. Adam's suing me for custody of christian.

Michael: So, you made a series of mistakes, massive errors in judgment that led us to here -- this moldy hole in the wall.

Kevin: I-I don't need your attitude. I have enough to deal with right now.

Michael: You're right. I'm sorry. This isn't getting us anywhere. Nick and summer can't stop worrying about phyllis. Paul is looking into her disappearance, so where -- she's the one who escaped. Of course she did. Because you're you and she's phyllis.

Kevin: This isn't funny. Look, adam must at least care about her a little, because he agreed to let chloe go if i deliver her to him. No clue what I'm gonna do now.

Michael: You should have come to me the second chloe went missing.

[ Kevin huffs ] I am here now, and we are gonna fix this.

Kevin: What are you doing?

Michael: I'm gonna call paul, I'm gonna tell him what happened and beg for leniency on your par-- was that really necessary?! Look, this whole story is gonna come out eventually, so we should try to get ahead of it.

Kevin: You can't tell the police. If they find chloe, they will lock her up, and she's gonna spend the rest of her life in a prison psych ward.

Michael: [ Sighs ] Don't take this the wrong way, kevin, but chloe has a history of attempting to murder adam, so maybe a psych ward is not such a bad idea.

Kevin: That would be the worst possible place for her. Yes, she made a mistake going after adam again, but --

Michael: No, no, no. Shooting someone is not an "oopsie-daisy."

Kevin: [ Sighs ] Look, adam -- adam triggers something in chloe's brain where it just clicks, and she becomes a different person. But there is so much more to her that that. Absent of adam, we have a great life. A happy home. And she is a terrific mother to bella. If you call the cops, bella could lose both of her parents, because I will go down right alongside chloe.

Michael: Which is why we should plead our case to paul now, to --

Kevin: No.

Michael: Before you get caught.

Michael: No! There is no way he and christine show me any mercy. You know it's true. Please. Just help me get chloe back to bella. I promise you, once we are home, I will make sure she gets the help she needs. And I promised adam that she will never step foot near him again. I will make sure of that. But no one can ever know what really has happened.

Michael: You are putting me in a terrible position.

Kevin: You put yourself there when you followed me.

Michael: Does phyllis know you're the one who nabbed her? Did she see your face?

Kevin: I don't think so. I was very careful. And it's not like adam can afford to admit what he's done, either.

Michael: What, so -- so, phyllis is free, and adam just brings chloe back and returns her, and that's the end of it? This is adam we're talking about. It can't be that simple.

Kevin: It's not. Quite. There's one more condition.

Michael: Well, there's the other shoe.

Kevin: He wants me to stay in town a while and help him out.

Michael: Help him out with what?

Kevin: I don't know.

Michael: No. That's bad. That's not happening. Who knows what he might ask you to do.

Kevin: I don't care. I will do anything to get chloe back.

Michael: [ Inhales deeply ] All right. Okay. Maybe that's our best option for now.

Kevin: It is. I promise you.

Michael: I hope so.

Kevin: I have to go. Adam needs an update.

[ Jingles keys ] Devon?

Devon: Hey.

Elena: Hi.

Devon: I'm glad you're back. I wasn't really sure if you'd want to see me after the way we left things.

Elena: I, um... had a lot of time to think about things. And my feelings haven't really changed or gone away, but... I feel like we owe it to ourselves to at least talk about this.

Devon: I completely agree with you. I'd love to talk.

Adam: I was wondering when i would hear from you. What's the, uh, status on phyllis?

Kevin: She's back out in the world.

Adam: Mm-hmm. How did she react when you let her go?

Kevin: Um... we never came face-to-face.

Adam: Huh. That's a rare smart move on your part. Where is she now?

Kevin: I don't know.

Adam: Meaning you don't know if she went back to the suite to take a bubble bath or straight to the police station?

Kevin: If she went to the cops, she's not gonna be able to tell them much. So, let's finish our deal. Phyllis goes free. I get chloe.

Adam: Something's not feeling right. Afraid I'm gonna need more than your word to prove you followed through, kev.

Kevin: I did everything you asked.

Adam: Then why are you lying about it?

Michael: I'd be more than happy to help you fight this, but, uh, I'm a little surprised you want me.

Nick: You know, I despised you for representing my father in our custody battle. But you succeeded. Christian went home with his grandfather because you were willing to do whatever it took to win. And I need you to do that for me now.

Michael: I fight for my clients. That's what I do. But I was on the wrong side of that one.

Nick: Well, you're on the right side now. Adam doesn't just get to change his mind, out of the blue decide he wants to be a father again. I know him. He gets bored easily, then he moves on to the next shiny thing. Well, what happens when he does that to my son? I am not gonna let him ruin this little boy's life because of some delusional father/son relationship he's cooked up in his mind.

Michael: Okay. It shouldn't be too hard to find a few things that might disqualify him as a parent. My guess is that he hasn't been a saint since he's been home.

Nick: He is the same evil, vindictive bastard he has always been. But we need to teach him a lesson -- that he doesn't just get to play god with other people's lives.

Michael: You're absolutely right. And it would be my pleasure to help you do that.

Elena: Oh, I, um... I saw those thank-you cards. What are they for?

Devon: My old elementary school was, uh, running low on computers, so I donated a few.

Elena: What's "a few"?

Devon: 50.

Elena: 50.

Devon: Yeah. 50. And I'm not gonna feel bad about doing it, either.

Elena: I don't want you to feel bad about it. I think it's wonderful. And I understand that, for you, buying 50 computers is like buying a cup of coffee.

Devon: Yeah. I wish the school would have kept the donation anonymous. But it's nice to read the -- the notes from the kids. I know what you're thinking.

Elena: No, you don'T.

Devon: You're right. I don'T. But I hope that you're not thinking that I treated you like a cause. Or like I just -- I tried to solve all your problems by writing a check like some big shot.

Elena: That's not what I was thinking. In that exact order. But you're right. You know, I'm not one of your charities.

Devon: I know you're not. I know. And I understand how i made you feel like it.

Elena: Yeah, and I don't need anyone to rescue me. I need someone to stand by my side.

Devon: That's all I want to do. When you told me how upset it made you, I should have listened to you. I -- I never meant to make you feel like I was disrespecting you. 'Cause I respect you like crazy. And I care about you just the same. So, I hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me for what I did.

Kevin: Everything I said is true. Phyllis is at large. Watch out, genoa city.

Adam: Do I need to remind you what's at stake here?

Kevin: Fine. I went to let her go, and when I got there, she was already gone.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] You... you miserable oaf.

Kevin: What? You wanted her free. She's free. So give me chloe. We're done.

Adam: You are in no position to make demands. We said once phyllis had her freedom, we would take it from there. Okay? So let's talk about what comes next.

Nick: Great. [ Sighs ] You, uh, feel like you can screw me over and then just walk into my house uninvited?

Victoria: I didn't think you would open the door if I knocked.

Nick: Well, you'd be right.

Victoria: Then I did the right thing. I came here to apologize.

Nick: For giving adam enough money to steal my life?

Victoria: I never envisioned what he would do with that money that I gave to him.

Nick: Well, we both agree on that, vick.

Elena: Guess I'm not
