Devon: I didn't realize how much I needed this.

Kyle: You sure?

Lola: That I want to spend the rest of my life waking up next to you? Yes, I am sure.

Rey: Your brother is interested in information on a woman by the name of chloe mitchell.

Nick: Chloe mitchell is dead.

Phyllis: Anyone could hack nick's servers for $1 million. But my rate is a little higher.

[ Screams ]

Rey: Hey. This is the lamp you wanted fixed, right, from the guest room?

Sharon: What? Oh, yeah. Um... thank you.

Rey: What's wrong? Something happen on your walk?

Sharon: I stopped by adam's to confront him about this chloe thing.

Rey: How'd that go?

Sharon: He wasn't there. Phyllis was.

Rey: Phyllis? Why?

Sharon: Apparently she was waiting for him to come back.

Rey: I didn't realize those two were friends.

Sharon: They never were before.

Rey: I'm assuming things weren't all that cordial?

Sharon: Things haven't been going her way lately, which makes her even nastier than usual. I asked her what she was doing there. She gave me the runaround, and then she left. I just hope that phyllis doesn't rope adam into one of her schemes.

Rey: You're assuming phyllis would be the one doing the roping. From what I've heard about adam --

Sharon: Look, I know what you're gonna say, and that was a long time ago.

Rey: Nick doesn't feel that adam's changed.

Sharon: Well, I'd like to hope that nick is wrong. You know, I'm adam's friend. I'm hoping that he'll make a different kind of life for himself this time around.

Rey: Let's hope that the guy lives up to your faith in him.

Nick: So, after years of doing business together, you sell off my debt to a third party without the courtesy of a phone call? No, I don't need you to research the new owner. I'm looking at him.

Adam: Why would I bluff when it was that easy for you to confirm my story?

Nick: [ Scoffs ] $27 million. Where'd you get that kind of cash?

Adam: Well, the source was someone close to you. Not quite as loyal as you counted on. But you can ponder that sad truth another day, because right now, you have a choice to make between dark horse, this incredible legacy you've created for yourself and your family, and this irrational obsession you have with keeping me from my son.

Nick: A son you don't even know.

Adam: Well, we're gonna fix that. That's kind of the point.

Nick: You are such a bastard.

Adam: I know this is a lot for you to take in. And I said I'd give you 24 hours to consider your options. So I will be back tomorrow to hear your decision.

Nick: I don't need 24 hours. There's no decision to make here. So, please, have a seat. Kick your feet up on the desk and make yourself at home. Because I will never abandon my son like you did. I will never let you use him as a bargaining chip. So if that means I lose dark horse, so be it.

Elena: Jett's leaving for detroit right now?

Devon: Yes. And ana is in the car downstairs waiting, 'cause they're gonna be flying out together.

Elena: I thought his tour didn't start for another week.

Devon: [ Sighs ] I know. This venue had an opening, though, that I never thought we'd be able to book, and I didn't want to pass it up. So, I apologize for springing it on you like this.

Elena: So, when's the show?

Devon: The show is tomorrow night. But they're gonna get there with plenty of time where he can sleep in, get to do sound check, and just have a nice, leisurely schedule. It'll be good.

Jett: Hey, devon, I can't thank you enough for arranging all this, man.

Devon: You're more than welcome. I think it's gonna be the perfect way to get you back out there, so...

Jett: Yeah, well, I'm glad you're willing to spare ana for a few days, 'cause, uh,

[Inhales] You know, it's been a while since I've been on the road, man -- working with the venues, the local talent, and all that.

Devon: Oh, yeah. Hey, ana will get you back in your groove in no time. You'll be good.

Jett: [ Sighs ] Okay.

Elena: Sorry. [ Scoffs ] It's just the timing. I know you want this. And I'm really happy for you.

Jett: Yeah, I can tell.

Elena: I'm gonna miss you.

Jett: [ Chuckles ] Look, just come to the first gig. Detroit is not that far away. You can some see your uncle/patient do his thing, huh?

Elena: Let me think about it.

Jett: Okay. Okay. Well, if you can't make it, it's all good. 'Cause I'll be back in a few months and, uh, have a lot of stories from the road to tell. Yeah. [ Groans ]

Elena: [ Groans ]

Jett: Love you, girl. Mm!

Elena: Take good care of yourself. Stay safe.

Jett: Come on. You know I will.

[ Chuckles ]

[ Exclaims ]

Devon: Ready to go?

Jett: All right.

Devon: Ready to break that leg, man?

Jett: Got it, got it.

Devon: You'll be good. Let me know when you make it, all right?

Jett: All right.

Devon: Take care.

Elena: Excuse me.

Abby: In case you need something to munch.

Jack: Thank you. Listen, is lola coming back this evening? I was hoping to speak with her.

Abby: No. No, the sous-chef is covering for her. Something came up last-minute.

Jack: I see.

Abby: Okay. Out with it. You know something.

Lola: We're really doing this?

Kyle: Wolfing down a whole pint of ice cream?

Lola: No, getting married.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] I wish I had given myself a little time. I could have planned a more memorable proposal.

Lola: Mm, planning is overrated.

Kyle: Ooh, did those words really just come out of your mouth?

Lola: We're not opening a restaurant.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ]

Lola: Besides, I loved your proposal. It was super sweet. It came right from the heart.

Kyle: Mm.

Lola: What more could a girl ask for?

Kyle: Hmm.

Lola: Mwah!

Kyle: Glad to know you feel that way. Still. There are a few things I could have gotten squared away beforehand.

Lola: Like finalizing your divorce?

Kyle: Mm. That's high on the list. But I was referring to getting you a ring, asking rey for his blessing.

Sharon: You've been keeping an eye on adam for nick. You've heard all of his suspicions. Have you found anything that's given you cause for concern?

Rey: Thank you. I want to know why adam's looking for chloe. What that means.

Sharon: You still think it's possible she might not be dead? She came back here and shot adam after learning that she didn't blow him to bits last time around? I mean that's -- no offense, it's a little out there.

Rey: It wouldn't be the first greatly exaggerated death in this town.

Sharon: That's true.

Rey: Mm.

Sharon: But I don't get the sense that adam is worried about somebody attacking him. I mean, he's moving around out in the open. No body guards. It's not really the behavior of somebody who's scared for their life.

Rey: Maybe he's not scared. Maybe his goal in finding chloe is not to protect himself, but to seek out revenge.

Sharon: Now you're really reaching.

Rey: Okay. [ Sighs ] Look, sharon, I get that guy is your friend. That you want good things for him. But as a cop, I got to trust my instincts about people, and whenever I'm around this guy, alarm bells go off. I just... I want you to be careful. Maybe... be not so quick to make excuses for the guy.

Rey: [ Inhales ] For your sake, I hope I'm wrong about him. Only time will tell.

Nick: You know, it says so much that you thought I'd be willing to trade my son over a company.

Adam: You need to stop calling christian that.

Nick: What are you so upset about? You won. You beat me. You bought dark horse right out from underneath me. And it was very clever. But, see, right now -- right now's the time when you realize it doesn't change anything. You don't have any more control over me. It's not gonna affect what I do or what I say or how I choose to raise my son. And the fact that you were willing to go to these lengths, to extort over a child, just proves my point -- you are unfit to be a parent.

Adam: No. No, no, no. You are the one that drove me to these extremes, nick, blocking me from having a relationship with my own kid!

Nick: And where is this new paternal instinct coming from? Because it's not the old adam -- the old adam who didn't want anything to do with christian when he was born.

Adam: There were reasons for all of that, nick, and you damn well know it.

Nick: Oh, I'm sure there are.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] I spent years in exile, no one around who cared if I lived or died. Sharon asked me if I wanted something more. I couldn't remember what that felt like, but now I do, and I want it. To have a family and to feel connected to another human being. How can you justify depriving me of that? Depriving christian of his father's love?

Nick: If you had even a scrap of affection for that little boy, you wouldn't be doing this. You would have tried to move into his life gradually, gotten to know him, tried to earn his trust. But that's not who you are. You don't want to work for anything. You just want to lie and cheat and manipulate. And then you are blown away that it doesn't get you where you want to be. So, by all means.

[ Slams desk ] Here we go. Take dark horse. In fact, I'm gonna throw in that framed photo of my son. Because trust me when I say this -- that is as close as you will ever get to him!

Adam: You'll regret this, nick.

[ Object clatters ]

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Abby: I'm sorry if I was a little pushy before. I'm just a little sensitive lately to people keeping secrets from me.

Jack: I understand no one in your family thought it was important to give you a heads up about your brother being alive.

Abby: Mm. Well, I put them on notice. I made them know that I was very bothered by that.

Jack: And what did they say?

Abby: [ Scoffs ] Well, they apologized, like always, and then they went right back to hiding things from me.

Jack: Like what?

Abby: I don't know. And, see, that -- that is the problem. But whatever the deal is this time, I'm sure I will be the last to hear about it -- again. I don't know how old I have to be, or how much I have to accomplish before they start treating me like an adult. It's insulting.

Jack: So stop waiting for them to change. Start trusting your instincts and going with your hunches. Look, you are a resourceful woman, abby. Decide what you want. If you want it enough, then I suggest you go get it. Now I am going to go say hello to michael and lauren. Excuse me.

Kyle: How do I look?

[ Sighs ]

Lola: Very nice.

Kyle: Oh, thanks.

Lola: Not that it matters.

[ Sighs ]

Kyle: Why do you say it that way?

Lola: Rey is gonna give you a flat no. He doesn't want us moving this quickly.

Kyle: Hey, it's not up to rey.

Lola: You say that. But it obviously means something to you, because you're working so hard to try to get on his good side.

Kyle: Your brother's old-school. We can't just announce we're engaged without me going to him first. Rey adores you. And I respect that. I don't want him worried that I'm gonna hurt you, because I would never do that. I love you so, so, so, so much. So I'm just gonna make that clear to him.

Lola: Well, you have my blessing to ask for rey's blessing.

Kyle: Mm...

Devon: Hey. I hope you're hungry, 'cause i made enough for four people, and then plans changed.

Elena: Sorry I didn't come down and help with dinner.

Devon: Oh, you don't have to apologize at all. I could tell that you wanted to have some time to yourself.

Elena: Yeah. It was so good for me, staying with jett after my mom died. We would talk about her, and he would tell me stories about when they were kids that I had never heard.

Devon: I imagine it was like having a little piece of your mom still with you, right?

Elena: Yeah. I'm fine. Heh. Him leaving just...

Devon: I know. It was a big surprise to you. I assumed, though, that you had a plan for after jett fully recuperated. Are you gonna go back and finish your residency, or...?

Elena: Eh... I'm not really up for that level of intensity just yet.

Devon: Mm.

Elena: But I do have some interviews lined up.

Devon: Nice.

Elena: And once i land a job, I'll find an apartment and move out.

Devon: Why would you move out?

[ Music plays ]

Elena: Thank you for a delicious meal.

Devon: You know, I will cook for you like that every single night if it keeps you here. I will. I'll learn how to.

Elena: [ Laughs ]

[ Music continues ] I came here to help take care of my uncle. And now he's gone.

Devon: Yeah, I think you had a few more reasons than that, though, didn't you?

Ana: Such as?

Devon: You got to know your cousin. Now you guys are friends, right?

Elena: And I hope ana and i will stay in touch.

Devon: What about me?

Elena: I hope we'll stay in touch, too.

Devon: I don't really think you're gonna go.

Elena: You don't?

Devon: I don't, no. 'Cause I think you might miss me a little too much.

Elena: But if I miss you, I could just call you.

Devon: Sure. You can call me. But I don't think talking on the phone really compares to what we're doing right now, does it?

[ Both chuckle ]

Elena: No, I guess it doesn't quite measure up. But you could still invite me over for dinner.

Devon: I could do that. But then we'd just be right back where we started, with me wondering why you'd want to leave in the first place.

Elena: It's not that I want to leave.

Devon: Then don't leave. Probably should have said this to you before right now. My feelings kind of snuck up on me.

[ Sighs ] When I walk through the door, the thought of you being on the other side of it makes me really happy. And all the times that we've stayed up and talked while everybody's asleep, and you being here for me, and holding you like this, I don't ever want to lose you.

Elena: Are you sure?

Nick: Rey here?

Sharon: Yes.

Rey: Nick. There a problem?

Nick: Yeah, there is a problem. You were supposed to be keeping an eye on adam.

Rey: What happened?

Nick: He somehow tracked down the lender I used to finance dark horse and bought the loan.

Sharon: So now you owe all that money to adam?

Nick: Which means he can call the loan due in full immediately if that's what he wants. And from what I gather, that's what he's gonna do.

Sharon: Why would adam do this?

Nick: Because I'm not giving him what he really wants.

Rey: Christian.

Sharon: I cannot believe adam would do that.

Nick: I don't understand why you think this is the new-and-improved adam. He's the same monster he's always been before. Do you honestly think he wouldn't use a child like a pawn, like the way he used faith?

Rey: What -- what happened with faith?

Nick: You haven't told him this story?

Sharon: Well, I will now.

Nick: [ Scoffs ]

Sharon: Anyway, first things first. I think I know who gave adam the information about your loan.

Nick: Who?

Sharon: Phyllis. I just ran into her up at the tack house. She was there waiting for him, acting like she had something to hide.

Nick: All right. So that makes sense. Phyllis showed up to billy and vick's ceremony on adam's arm just to screw with them. Then I got into it with her. What do you want to bet adam used that to whip phyllis into revenge mode? Damn it!

Rey: Wait, wait, wait. Did -- did phyllis have access to the dark horse network?

Sharon: She wouldn't need it. She would just hack her way in. It's one of her many talents.

Rey: Okay. I-I don't know what else to say except that I'm sorry. I was so busy focusing on adam, I didn't have time to review dark horse's cybersecurity.

Nick: Well, there's no need to bother now. I mean, the whole place is gonna be his now, anyway. For all I know, phyllis could end up running my company. I bet she would just love that.

Sharon: You know, maybe it's possible that adam didn't tell phyllis what he planned to do with the information. He might have tricked her.

Nick: It's the story of phyllis' life -- never realizing what a mess she's gotten herself into until it's too late.

[ Door slams ]

Rey: Adam took your newborn child and let you believe that she died?

Sharon: It was for less than a year. Faith was lovingly cared for in that time.

Rey: While you were grieving [Scoffs] Her death.

[ Stammers ] That's unspeakably cruel.

Sharon: I know it must be strange for you that I forgave adam, even fell in love with him.

Rey: "Strange" wouldn't be the word I'd choose.

Sharon: [ Sighs ] I don't know how to describe it other than to say... adam is a damaged soul. And I was able to see past the worst things that he had done and see how much pain he was in.

Rey: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: And recognize it, because I was damaged, too.

Rey: So you've said.

Sharon: We were... kindred spirits in that way. I ended up needing as much forgiveness as adam did. And without it, I wouldn't be here. I certainly wouldn't be capable of having the relationship that I have with you. It's been a really long journey for me to get to this place.

Rey: Doesn't sound that adam has gone as far as you have.

Sharon: I'm so disappointed in him. I can understand him wanting to be nearby as christian is growing up, but to take a child away from a loving home without thinking the damage it would do, it's terrible. And I feel responsible because I'm the one that convinced adam to come back here. And I reassured nick that he wouldn't be a threat.

Rey: No, no, no, no, no. Taking responsibility for adam's choices is just another way of letting him off the hook. There is no way you could have known what adam was going to pull. You are not responsible, sharon.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

[ Sighs ] It's kyle. He wants to meet.

Sharon: Yeah? Why?

Rey: Doesn't say. But I think I know what it's about.

Abby: This is amazing! Congratulations. I am so excited for you guys.

Lola: You don't think it's too soon?

Abby: Do you?

Lola: Surprisingly, no.

Abby: Then follow your instincts. You got yourself a keeper.

Lola: [ Sighs ] I did, didn't I?

Abby: Okay. Come on, let me see the ring!

Lola: I don't have one yet. It all happened so fast.

Abby: Don't worry about a thing. I will weigh in on the matter. I might even take kyle shopping. Because, you know, I know a thing or two about bling. But you have to promise me you will not give him a hard time if he splurges. This is a big deal! This is a ring that's gonna be on your finger the rest of your life.

Lola: Ugh, fine. I promise to not complain... unless the ring is too heavy to life.

Abby: Aah!

Lola: [ Laughs ]

Abby: I'm so excited!

Lauren: Do you want to go say hi?

Jack: No, no. I don't want to intrude. I'm just glad to see lola so happy after everything she's been through. And abby, too.

Lauren: Yeah, I heard her ex left town with his pregnant girlfriend? Yow.

Michael: His pregnant sister-in-law. Double yow.

Jack: Hey, you like fixing& people up. Maybe you should use your skills to helping abby.

Lauren: [ Scoffs ] No, no, no, no, no, no. I am retired from matchmaking, thank you very much.

Jack: Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Though I must say, claire was lovely.

Lauren: Thank you.

Jack: But with all the attention that jabot collective is getting from social media these days, I have a feeling you're gonna be pretty busy at work.

Lauren: That's right. Bring on the challenges. We will conquer them.

Michael: Whoo-hoo!

Jack: I like the way she talks.

Michael: [ Chuckles ]

[ Cellphone chimes ] Oh. So sorry.

[ Groans ]

Lauren: Is there a problem, baby?

Michael: A legal emergency. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to go.

Jack: Ohh.

Lauren: Oh, no. You know what? Why don't I get you the special, and I'll have it boxed up for you?

Michael: You're a doll.

Lauren: Mm-hmm.

Michael: I'm even more glad that you were able to join us. Now my lovely wife will not have to dine alone.

Jack: Well, nor will I.

Lauren: Oh.

Michael: Mm.

Lauren: That kind of case, huh?

Michael: Mm-hmm.

Lauren: [ Laughs ]

Michael: Bye.

Lauren: Bye, my love.

Michael: Ciao.

Jack: I've known you a long time, through a lot of ups and downs. I don't think I've ever seen you this content.

Lauren: You may be right. Michael and I are in a very good place.

Jack: So what's the secret?

Lauren: You mean besides my sparkling personality and my ability to make the perfect bone-dry martini?

[ Giggles ]

Jack: [ Laughs ] No, I'm serious. You two have been married a long time, and you practically act like newlyweds. I know there have been some rough patches. A lot of people wouldn't have made it through that.

Lauren: Want to know my secret? I'm gonna tell you.

Devon: I'm so glad you came into my life.

Rey: It's way too soon to be talking about marriage, kyle.

Kyle: Rey, please. Hear me out.

Rey: Listen, I-I know what it feels like to be in love. You feel like the luckiest guy in the world. But I also know what it's like to realize too late that you've made a mistake. And then -- and then you are trapped.

Kyle: With all due respect, lola isn't mia.

Rey: Yeah, that's a fair point. Except... lola has never been in a serious relationship.

Kyle: Neither have I. Not really.

Rey: Marriage is a lot different than dating. It's not always fun and romantic. All right? It's not something you -- you can conveniently fit in your schedule. On your worst day, when you are -- you're sick, you're stressed out, you're -- you're unhappy, you got to make the other person feel like she is first, even at her most annoying. And -- and if you don't think lola can be annoying, well, then, you don't know her well enough to even be contemplating this.

Kyle: I -- [ Chuckles ] I was expecting something more along the lines of, "lola's perfect, and you're not worthy."

Rey: No, no. She is perfect. That's why she's so annoying.

Kyle: [ Chuckles ] I know you've been more of a father to her than a brother. That's why I'm talking to you about the most important job I'll ever have -- taking care of lola. And, someday...our kids. Look, I'd be crazy not to ask for advice and support from the man who knows her best.

Rey: I will be there for both of you. You have my word. Couldn't get rid of me if you tried. So don't try.

Kyle: I swear I won'T.

Rey: Then... I guess you're part of the family now.

[ Sighs ] For better or worse.

Nick: So, tell me what my options are. And do not tell me that I don't have any.

Michael: Well, I'm sorry to say they're limited. Whoever has the loan has control.

[ Sighs ] Either you can try to negotiate some kind of working arrangement with adam --

Nick: No. No way in hell.

Michael: Well, then, your best hope is to try to round up the funds to buy back the loan.

Nick: He will never sell.

Michael: Actually, he might. Adam only bought dark horse to use as leverage, which didn't work. He has no interest in the company itself. If the price is right, he could turn a quick profit, declare victory, and walk away with a semblance of his pride intact.

Nick: Okay. So what I need, then, is a white-knight investor.

Lauren: Michael and I were once in such a bad place that, um, it's part of the reason why we're so strong today -- because I know what it's like to almost lose him. And I never want to go through that again. So you can call it mindfulness or active gratitude. So when he does something thoughtful, right -- when he pays me a compliment or makes me laugh -- I pay attention. I appreciate the moment, and let it sink in how truly lucky we are to have each other.

Jack: You make it sound deceptively simple.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: I can't argue with the results, though. You are simply radiant.

Lauren: You're very charming, jack.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Oh, michael's on his way home.

Jack: Go, go. I'll take care of this.

Lauren: Oh, no, no, no. You don't have to do that.

Jack: I want to do that. I'll take care of this.

Lauren: Thank you very much.

Jack: Thank you. I enjoy your company more than you know.

Lauren: Jack, I've said it before -- the right woman is out there for you. I really believe it.

Jack: I want to believe that, too.

Lauren: Mm-hmm. Good night.

Jack: Good night.

[ Footsteps ]

Devon: Hey.

Elena: Are you okay?

Devon: Yeah.

Elena: Do you regret what we did?

Devon: No. Not at all.

[ Keys clatter ]

Kyle: Hey. [ Sighs ]

Lola: So? How did it go with rey?.. We had a great talk.

Lola: [ Gasps ] Really?!

Kyle: He may not be 100% on the whole marriage thing yet, but he said he'd be proud and happy to walk you down the aisle.

Lola: Oh, my god! You're amazing.

Kyle: [ Laughs ] Maybe a little.

Lola: Well, I have some news, too. I talked to abby, and she's really excited to help us plan for the wedding.

Kyle: Cool.

Lola: She did a ton of research that she never got to use for her own, so she's like the world's foremost expert in photographers and caterers and pretty much anything wedding-related that you can think of.

Kyle: Ooh, lola rosales, are you going to let me spend money? Like, big money?

[ Laughs ]

Lola: Ugh! Just this once. Like you said, it's a special occasion.

Kyle: This is awesome. I am going to give you the wedding of your dreams.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Whew...

[ Groans ]

[ Door rattles ]

Phyllis: Help!

[ Knocking on door ] Can anyone hear me?! Help! [ Pounds on door ]

[ Sighs ] Let's see... god, come on. Come on. Give me a signal. Give me a signal, damn it!

[ Exclaims ] No! God...

[ Sobs ] Please, please...
