Episode #11601 ~ Neil's loved ones celebrate his life.
Provided By Suzanne
Malcolm: We just went to church, and we did right by my brother in god's house. But now we got to do right by him here. So no more awkward silence. No more serious faces. That's not what neil was about, and we all know it. We can mourn the man, as we should. But come on. We got to celebrate him, too.
Devon: I could use a little bit of that.
Lily: Yeah. Dad would love that.
Malcolm: You know, that piano over there, it ain't gonna play itself.
Ana: Uh... give me a second. I don't know what song.
Malcolm: Nah, come on. Play whatever. Just no more tears. That's all I'm saying. No more tears. Okay?
Devon: Yeah, go ahead.
Ana: Got it.
Malcolm: Come on. Everybody up. Everybody up. Let's have some fun. Get over here.
Ana: [ Playing upbeat tune ]
Ain't nobody gonna take your place
there ain't a thing that could keep me away
ain't no mountain gonna keep me down
I'm gonna love you till the world stops turnin' round
till the world stops turnin'
world stops turnin'
world stops turnin' round everybody!
Till the world stops turnin'
world stops turnin' that's it!
World stops turnin'
[ Chuckles ]
Charlie: Yeah!
[ Cheers and applause ]
Devon: Man. That was absolutely incredible. Thank you for that, ana.
Ana: You're welcome.
Malcolm: That's exactly the kind of tribute my brother would have wanted.
Victor: Neil would have loved it.
Jack: Hear, hear.
[ Jazz music plays ]
Lily: Heh... that's dad's favorite.
Malcolm: Hey, man, this is perfect. Just got to keep neil's music playing.
Devon: I think we're set for the duration.
Ana: Devon has a whole stack of his favorite vinyl sides.
Devon: That's right. Hey, nate, thanks again, man, for bringing these.
Nate: My pleasure.
Devon: Appreciate it.
Nick: You know, it reminds me of that club, indigo, that neil opened when we were working at newman together.
Mariah: Indigo?
Traci: Well, it was this hot little jazz club right downtown.
Victor: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. In its time, that was the place to go to.
Lily: Remember gloworm? Same building.
Jack: I remember how proud neil was on opening night. Wow.
Nick: That club represented a whole other side of him.
Devon: He had some real popular acts there, too. He had aaron neville and enrique iglesias.
Cane: Yeah. He was in his element that night, wasn't he?
Jill: And he was always such a gracious host.
Victoria: You could tell that he loved it when he was there.
Sharon: He always had a smile every time you walked in the door.
Neil: I'm thinking about buying it. Turning it into a jazz club.
Devon: A jazz club? Are you for real about that?
Neil: Yeah, I'm for real.
Devon: What about your job?
Neil: What about it? I can do both.
Devon: Wow. Well, you know what, dad? I've always wanted to be a deejay. Maybe, uh, between sets, I can
[Mimics records scratching]
Neil: [ Laughs ] All right, mr. Deejay. We got plenty of time to work out all the details if I buy it.
Devon: This is crazy. You know, neil, I always kind of thought of you as a suit kind of guy. But running a jazz club? That's cool.
Neil: Hey, devon. I'll tell you something.
Devon: Huh?
Neil: I haven't felt this energized about anything in a long, long time.
Lily: Yeah, dad always felt like music brought people together, just like right now.
Cane: Yeah. He was into everything, wasn't he? The classics, whatever's current.
Sofia: He even had a playlist of smooth-jazz lullabies for moses.
[ Laughter ]
Mariah: Oh, that sounds awesome.
Sofia: It was.
Nick: He loved all kinds of jazz, from new orleans hot music to big band, swing, bebop, fusion...
Nate: Mm. And he'd debate you on the merits of each one.
Ashley: His eyes would light up whenever he talked about it.
Devon: Now his joy for music will live on through lp.
Jack: You know what? So will his enthusiasm -- through his brother and you and lily and moses and his grandchildren. That is what we are all here celebrating tonight.
Malcolm: That's right, jack. Everyone, join me in raising a glass. To neil ellis winters. Music lover. Businessman. Philanthropist. Humanitarian. And the best friend, father, grandfather, and the best brother you could ever ask for.
Jack: To neil.
Together: To neil.

Mariah: I know this probably goes without saying, but if you need anything, I will be there. If you want to text me or call me or send a message telepathically, I'll come running.
Devon: I know.
Mariah: Literally. I will -- I will run. I won't like it, but I will.
[ Laughs ]
Devon: [ Chuckles ] And I really appreciate you. I do. But I'm okay.
Mariah: Okay. Well, then... would you mind telling me what you're thinking right now?
Devon: What I'm thinking? I'm just looking around here and thinking about everything that I have in my life, and how blessed I am. And how I owe everything to neil.
Neil: My man. Graduating this semester. You still haven't told me what your plans are.
Devon: Yeah, that's right. Um... well, my plan is to, uh... I'm gonna go after music. I'm gonna start writing the songs that I got floating around in my head, and get some kind of job to save up for a studio session.
Neil: Tell you what -- you finish writing those songs. You put together the people. I'll cover the studio session.
Devon: You serious about that? 'Cause I always thought you wanted me to get a suit job and keep music on the side.
Neil: Devon, how long did i wait to leave newman, hm? If I had known what was waiting for me at chancellor... I have really come into my own there now. And, see, if something like that could happen for you, I would prefer for it to happen sooner rather than later. I mean, now -- now, music is a tough business. I'm not saying that I expect instant success.
Devon: No, I know. But you're saying that you believe in me.
Neil: That's exactly what I'm saying.
Mariah: He was a really great dad.
Devon: He was the best dad. Which is why I want to focus on the good times, you know?
Traci: [ Gasps ]
Mattie: Ohh!
[ Giggles ]
Lily: Um, I'm gonna go talk to malcolm, okay?
Mattie: Okay. Sure, mom.
Lily: Okay.
Jill: So.
Cane: Yeah.
Jill: How did lily take it when you told her you were leaving chancellor to start over with her? Not that I want you to go, 'cause I don't want you to go.
Cane: There's no other alternative. I'm going.
Jill: I understand. I really understand. Nothing is more important than family. Or it shouldn't be. [ Sighs ] But just tell me -- did your gesture have the effect you were hoping for?
Cane: No.
Jill: Oh, baby. She still wants a divorce?
Cane: But I am not going to give up. I'm gonna prove to her that i can be the man that she needs me to be. Especially now.
Malcolm: I know how hard that was for you. Getting up in front of everyone on a day when you feel like you can barely function. But you overcame your grief to say a beautiful goodbye to your daddy.
Lily: Well, I had to. For him and for myself.
Malcolm: Well, you made us proud, baby girl.
Lily: Thank you. I don't know. I've just been thinking all day about what an incredible father he was. I mean, especially now that I have my own teenagers.
Malcolm: Kind of like, the older you get, the smarter he gets.
Lily: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. Just like that. I just -- I was so rebellious back then.
Malcolm: Hmm.
Lily: Remember? I just -- I ran away with daniel, and I got arrested. And he never blew up. Never. Even when he was furious with me, he always just stood by me and -- and made sure that I knew it was gonna be okay.
Lily: [ Crying ] I don't want to go. Please. I just want to go home. I want to sleep in my own bed. I'll do whatever the police want if they just let me go. Please, daddy.
Neil: We'll have you home soon, I promise. You'll be home. You'll be home. Everything will be okay. But for now... lily, you have to be brave, that's all.
Lily: No! I'm not strong enough for this.
Neil: Yes, you are. Honey, please. Shh, sh, sh, sh. Shh, shh. You're tougher than you realize, okay?
Lily: He just -- he built me up back then, you know, just like he did this past year.
Malcolm: Hey. I know you're struggling. But you will persevere, just like my brother taught you. Now you just keep going forward. Keep working to be the best you can be. Like he'd want you to.
Lily: Hi.
Billy: I'm so sorry.
Lily: Thank you.
Billy: I'm glad you're here. Glad that you got out early.
[ Sighs ] Hopefully you can put everything that you've been through behind you.
Lily: Yeah, me too. I'm just happy that I got to see him one more time outside of those walls. When I got out, he was right there waiting for me.
[ Chuckles ] Ah, and he gave me the best hug.
Billy: That's good. I'm glad you two were in a good place before he -- before he passed. And, you know, no regrets. Nothing unresolved. That's good. I hope you can find solace in that.
Lily: I mean, I could, you know, obsess about all the moments that we've been robbed of, but [Sighs] I don't want to do that. Not today, you know? I just want to [Sniffles] Think about all the amazing moments that we did have.
Victor: I've got to say, in all the years I've lived and been in business, your father was one of the most honest men I've ever met. He didn't tell stories or lies or obfuscate. When I met him, I knew that I'd discovered a rising star.
Jack: Uh, for the record, um, you didn't discover him. Neil started out as an executive trainee at jabot.
Victor: Well, now, if memory serves me correctly, for the record, I think your company at that time was under the newman umbrella.
Jack: Be that as it may, my father hired him and mentored him.
Victor: [ Laughing ] Let's just say that your father and I knew talent when we saw it.
Victor: Now, neil...
Neil: Yes, sir?
Victor: You have been on top of this from the very beginning. And I want you to know how much I appreciate that.
Neil: Thank you, victor.
Victor: You have a nice day.
Jack: Neil did great work for both our companies. And I'm sure if katherine were here, she would agree. Though I, uh, have to confess, I convinced neil to leave her.
Neil: You know, jack, I'm very happy at chancellor.
Jack: Yes, I know you are.
Neil: Katherine and I have a very good relationship.
Jack: You're damn right you do. But you still came here to see me.
Neil: I'd be a fool not to hear what you had to offer.
Jack: Yes, you would, because we're gonna show you the money.
Neil: Well, see, jack, here's the thing -- and you know this -- I've been a right-hand man before. Not my thing anymore.
Jack: Right hand my eye. I want you as C.E.O. Of jabot.
Jack: Neil relished each and every challenge that was put before him.
Devon: It is to me, too. Creating hamilton-winters group was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life.
Devon: I would love to go into business with you. There's nobody I trust more in this world than you. I know it sounds crazy, given everything we've gone through, but look where we are. Look where we ended up. Right back where we always should have been -- as family. And not just family, but friends who don't keep secrets, and who don't hold grudges.
Neil: We both have every right to hold onto one particular grudge forever.
Devon: Sure we do. But where is that gonna get us? We're still here. We're still family. There is nobody I would rather do this with more than you. What do you say?
Devon: You know, to have a -- a successful company with both of our names on the door, it means more to me now than it ever did, because I know that I'm gonna be carrying it on for the both of us.
Jack: I can't think of a more meaningful legacy than that.
Devon: Neither can I.
Victor: Devon, your dad would be very, very proud of you.
Sofia: It is so good to see you again, ashley. I just wish it was under different circumstances.
Ashley: I know. I'm sorry. I can't even process it -- you know, that he's gone. I just was looking so forward to seeing neil this trip.
Sofia: I heard you two had been seeing each other.
[ Ashley chuckles ] History repeats itself.
Ashley: I know. I know. I mean, this time it ended because I moved to paris to start my own company.
Sofia: Look, no need to explain. I just like knowing that you and neil reconnected. That he finally found romance again with somebody who understood him and cared about him.
Ashley: I know. And I -- I know how much he meant to you.
Sofia: Oh, he was such a good man, wasn't he? Just so loyal and caring. You know, uh... our past was a little complicated.
Ashley: Oh, hey. You know, whose isn't?
[ Both chuckle ]
Sofia: But, uh, he was just a class act. You know, set a stellar example for all of his kids, and I will always respect him for that.
Sofia: It's beautiful.
Neil: Mm-hmm. That's moses' birthstone, and his birth date is engraved right underneath there.
Sofia: Wow. [ Chuckles ] Let's see.
Neil: Here, bring it out. Come on. Come on.
Sofia: Okay.
Neil: All right. There you go.
Sofia: It is so beautiful.
Neil: And so is our boy. Thank you, sofia.
Sofia: There will never be another man like him.
Ashley: Isn't that the truth.
Jack: Not always easy to drop everything and run home when something like this happens.
Malcolm: Jack, I only had one brother. Nothing was gonna keep me away. No job is more important than family.
Jack: I couldn't agree more.
Malcolm: Huh. Look at you. Just as gorgeous as ever.
Victoria: Oh. I was just about to say the same thing about you.
Jack: Gee, why do I feel the sudden need to check out the fruit platter?
Malcolm: [ Sighs ] Thank you. Thank you for being here today.
Victoria: Your brother was very dear to me and my whole family. He's always gonna have a special place in my heart. In all of our hearts.
Jill: What a day, huh?
Billy: Yep. Guess it's a reminder to live in the moment and not take anything for granted, right?
Jill: Yes. Speaking of which, I was very surprised when you asked me to swing by victoria's so we could all attend together. And I couldn't help but notice how attentive you were to her. So has anything changed since i was here on my last visit? Or, what, you're gonna tell me I'm reading too much into this?
Billy: For once, no. I'm not gonna tell you that, because we're back together.
Jill: [ Gasps ] Oh, hallelujah!
Billy: Just tone it down, okay? We're taking it very slow.
Jill: Oh, anything you say.
Billy: Oh, for some reason i find that hard to believe.
Victoria: Hi. Um...
Billy: Hi.
Victoria: I think that we should probably head home and give the family a chance to spend some time together alone. And I want to give the kids an extra hug and kiss...
Billy: Okay.
Victoria: ...Before they go to bed.
Billy: I think that's a good idea.
Victoria: Okay.
Sharon: I can just picture dru, waiting to welcome your father with open arms.
Lily: Yeah, they'll be together again. And after what he went through when she died... they deserve to be at peace.
Nikki: He never got over drucilla's death. Never stopped missing her.
Sharon: I remember how hard it was. But neil made it through. And when he got to the other side, he made a decision -- to always lend a hand when someone needed lifting up.
Nikki: Yeah. And he did it again and again.
Sharon: When I was working so hard to put my life back together, neil hired me at jabot to advocate for the models.
Lily: I remember that.
Nikki: Because that was the kind of man he was. I remember, I would be on the edge, and it would be so easy for me to just get lost in alcohol, and neil would reach in and pull me back from the abyss. I could always rely on him, no matter what.
Nikki: And I know you were only trying to help me. I hope you know how much I regret that.
Neil: I-I really -- I shouldn't have said some of the things that I said at that intervention. I know better. I-I really should have kept it a secret.
Nikki: I don't want to dwell on that.
Neil: Okay, then let's not dwell on it. Don't downplay the decision you made to come here. It was a very brave move.
Nikki: Well, that's what I keep telling myself.
Neil: And now [Sighs] The healing can start, right?
Nikki: I've never had a more loyal friend.
Lily: He felt the same way about you. You know, he knew that you would always be there if he needed someone to really understand what he was going through.
Nikki: [ Sighs ] Just know... that, for you and your family, you will always have a friend in me.
"The young and the restless"
will continue.
Sharon: Faith is waiting, so I think I'll start saying my goodbyes. Are you ready to leave?
Mariah: You know, I'm -- I'm really glad that hilary and neil forgave each other before she died. I think they both needed that closure. I'm just -- I'm worried about devon and what he needs.
Sharon: Yeah. He was still grieving hilary's death, and then this happens.
Ana: I know he wants to stay strong for lily and the kids.
Mariah: Yeah, but how realistic is that?
Ana: Not very. I'll be keeping an eye on him.
Sharon: If you need any backup --
Ana: I know who to call.
Nick: I used to think I was a pretty big deal on the basketball court, but your old man took me to school a few times.
Devon: [ Chuckles ] You're not the only one.
Nick: It was all in good fun, but it brought out his competitive spirit.
[ Sighs ] You know, your dad, he didn't let up on the basketball court, just like in business. If he wanted something, he was all-in. He was a good man. I'm gonna miss him. I'm sorry he's gone.
[ Cellphone chimes ]
Victor: There you are, my darling. We need to go. There's something I need to discuss with you, okay?
Nikki: By all means.
Malcolm: I'm really glad that you got to come back to genoa city and spend some time with neil.
Nate: Yeah. I'm grateful for that, too. It's been way too long since i connected with you, though.
Malcolm: I know. And I'll take the blame for that. It's just... you know, my schedule is --
Nate: I -- yeah. I get it. Let's not wait so long till the next time, though.
Malcolm: Yeah, you got it.
Nate: All right.
Malcolm: You know, I just keep -- I keep expecting neil to walk through that door.
Nate: Yeah. I know exactly what you mean.
Malcolm: I don't want to think about a world without neil winters in it.
Nate: Me neither. Maybe try and, uh, focus on how lucky you were to have a brother like that. I know how far the two of you came in life.
Malcolm: You're not even curious about your little brother?
Neil: Half-brother.
Malcolm: Fine suit, big brother.
Neil: Glad you approve.
Malcolm: [ Scoffs ] Yeah, well, I could never wear anything like that. It's too tight.
Neil: What are you doing here, malcolm?
Malcolm: Well, how long's it been, neil?
Neil: I stopped counting.
Malcolm: What, five, six years, right?
Neil: Yeah, all of that.
Malcolm: [ Scoffs ] A man shouldn't be away from his family that long, big brother.
Neil: I'll ask again -- what are you doing here?
Malcolm: Man, did we know how to push each other's buttons.
Sofia: Don't have to ask who you two are talking about.
Malcolm: Oh, neil and I. We just -- we came at life so differently. With relationships, work. Women. Present company included. We just couldn't have been more different.
Nate: [ Sighs ]
Sofia: Yet [Scoffs] No matter how crazy you two made each other, you always reconciled.
Malcolm: Yeah. Even if it took a while. A good long while.
Malcolm: Hey, come on, man. What's up? I mean, what the hell am I doing wrong?
[ Scoffs ] Hello? Hey, man, you got to tell me something. I got to know.
Neil: [ Sighs ] Malcolm, uh... maybe I'm the one who's been doing something wrong. And that's why I really came by here today, to tell you that. You know, uh, I think it's gonna be kind of cool having you around, little brother.
Sofia: You shaped each other's lives in a way nobody else could.
Malcolm: It's just, the man that I am... he wouldn't exist without neil. I'm gonna miss him so much. Just so much.
Sofia: So am I. So am I.
Jack: Malcolm.
Malcolm: We both lost our best friend.
Neil: What's the worst thing that can happen, huh? Wait. I know. You could find out that victor newman is your dad.
Jack: [ Scoffs ] I have actually had that nightmare recently.
Neil: You did, huh? What'd you do?
Jack: After I stopped screaming? I did a little math, and to my great relief, I realized it wasn't possible.
Neil: Okay. So there you go. I mean, the one name that you and your subconscious dread the most -- already off the list. Boom. Done.
Jack: Done? We're just getting started. You might want to buckle up. I might need to do the same thing.
Neil: All I know is that you have the strength, and you got the sense of humor to deal with it.
Jack: And I got one good friend backing me up.
Jack: With neil dying this young, we're both gonna have a pretty big hole in our lives.
Traci: Your family got so much comfort from you being here today, honey.
Malcolm: I appreciate that, traci. Take care. Hmm.
Ashley: Don't be such a stranger.
Malcolm: Hmm. Look who's talking.
Ashley: Touché.
Malcolm: You know, I am in paris quite a bit for work.
Ashley: Really? Well, next time you're in town, why don't you give me a call? Maybe we'll have dinner and catch up properly.
Malcolm: It's a date. It's good to see you.
Ashley: You too.
Ana: I'm gonna fix you and lily each a plate. I know you haven't eaten.
Devon: Now that you mention it...
Ana: You're suddenly starving?
Devon: It's funny how that works.
Ana: Coffee? Wine? Something stronger?
Devon: No. I'll have some water or some juice, something like that.
Ana: I'll be right back.
> Devon: Thank you.
Devon: So, how you really feel about all this?
Neil: I'm blessed, man.
Devon: You're blessed? Even after everything hilary's done to this family?
Neil: I have made my share of mistakes. So who am I to judge? Look at everything I got. I got you. I got lily. Moses. Grandkids. Another one on the way. I couldn't ask for a better father's day.
Malcolm: Hey, everyone.
[ Sighs ] There's something I want to say. It's just us now. Winters, hamilton, ashby, hastings. This remarkable family that I'm so proud to be a part of. I'm looking at all of you, and I can feel that my brother is right here with us. So if you want to honor him, we all got to cherish these times when we're together like this. Appreciate the love in this room. That is what made neil winters happy. That's what he was all about.
Devon: Without a doubt.
Lily: Amen.
Malcolm: He lived and breathed family pretty much every waking minute. Hey, neil. I got an idea. And it's one I think you're gonna like.
Malcolm: Okay. Here we go. You ready?
Cane: All right.
Charlie: Yeah.
Mattie: Yep.
Cane: Let's do it.
Malcolm: All right.
Ana: Wait. No.
Malcolm: What? Oh, come on, now. Come on, now. We good?
Ana: Okay. Yes.
Malcolm: All right. Here we go.
Ana: [ Chuckles ]
Malcolm: Boom. Five seconds.
Devon: You ready? Let's go. Come on.
Malcolm: Show some teeth. Show some teeth.
Devon: All right.
[ Camera shutter clicks ]
Malcolm: There it is. All right. All right. Let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see. Oh, we pretty together. We pretty! [ Laughs ] Hey, devon, you got to send everybody a copy, all right?
Devon: Sure, man.
Cane: Hey, man, it's good you thought of that while we were still here.
Sofia: Yeah. Speaking of which, um, I hate to be the one to say it, but it's time.
Nate: Wow. It is. Better shake a leg if I'm getting you and moses to the airport on time.
Malcolm: Hey, is it cool if I hitch a ride with you?
Nate: Absolutely.
Devon: Well, hey, let's not go years again between visits.
Malcolm: [ Sighs ] I'll do my best.
Devon: Love you.
Malcolm: Love you, too. Mm.
[ Sighs ]
Lily: [ Sighs ] Cane and the kids are leaving, but I can stay if you want.
Devon: No. They need you. It's okay.
Lily: You sure? Okay.
Devon: Hey.
Lily: I love you.
Devon: I love you more.
Malcolm: Come here, you.
[ Sighs ]
Sofia: Now, we might not always be in town, but we are here for both of you, always.
Nikki: I thought we were going home. What are we doing here?
Victor: Uh... I-I -- I just need to pick up a few things before I take the flight.
Nikki: Flight? You're not leaving again?
Victor: Sweetheart --
Nikki: Victor, no! You can't do this. Not without giving me some answers. Please.
Victor: My baby, you got to trust me. Okay?
Nikki: [ Sighs ]
Victor: So --
Nikki: No. It's not okay. That's not good enough. I thought you wanted to have an actual conversation to let me know what you've been up to.
Victor: Well, yeah. Let me just say that plans have changed, and it's now not prudent on my part to give you the information you're obviously looking for.
Nikki: It is not prudent? What does that even mean?
Victor: What it means is that the less you know, the better you are. But I have everything under control.
Nikki: Victor, you can't leave. You can't without just giving me a hint, anyway. Give me something. I'm your wife.
Victor: Yes, you are. And I adore you. But I can't tell you a damn thing, okay, except that I love you, and it'll all become clear very soon.
Nikki: Mm-hmm.
Victor: I promise.
Ana: Ugh. What an amazing day. And all the people who came to honor neil, the service, this reception... it was lovely.
Devon: Thank you for all your help, too.
Ana: Oh, it -- it was nothing. I was happy to do it. So... should I start cleaning up? Or we could talk if you'd rather. Or we could just sit and not talk.
Devon: No, no. Uh, I'd really like to just be by myself. If you don't mind.
Ana: I understand.
Lily: Today actually happened. We buried my father and said goodbye.
Cane: Yeah. Listen, uh... why don't you stay here in your home? You know, you can rest.
Lily: I'm leaving first thing in the morning. I never meant to stay.
Cane: You know, I just wish you would, um... that you would reconsider. You know, sweetheart, after everything you've had to deal with.
Lily: You know, all I've been thinking about is how supportive my dad has been. He just wanted me to be happy and fulfilled, and lead the life that I want to live.
Cane: And you can't do that with me?
Lily: I'm sorry.
[ Front door opens ]
[ Keys jingle ]
Elena: Hey. How did today go?
Devon: Um...
Elena: How are you?
Devon: I'm okay.
Elena: I'm sorry.
Devon: [ Murmurs ]
[ Crying ]
