Episode #11459 ~ Tempers flare between Jack and Billy, Phyllis delivers an important message, and Devon's world is rocked.

Previously on "the young and the restless"...
Hilary: Devon can't find out the real reason for this meeting.
Shauna: I know what happened. She blew through that red light and caused this accident. And now she's totally gonna get away with it.
Nate: Enjoy the time you have left together. Make every moment count.
Hilary: I want a big service. And I want it to be a celebration.
Devon: [ Sighs ]
[ Doorbell rings ]
Neil: Hey. How you doing? You all right?
Devon: I'm good.
Neil: Good. Okay, so, I just checked in with the funeral home. Uh, everything's set at the church. The cars are headed over here to pick up the family.
Devon: Okay. Should we call lily and cane, or what?
Nate: Oh, they're next door with the kids.
Devon: Okay.
Nate: How's shauna?
Devon: Shauna's upstairs, dressed. We both have been for hours. Just waiting.
Neil: So, anything that you want us to help you with, or...?
Nate: Oh, just --
Devon: I wish I knew. I got it. I got it. Thank you. I don't know. Hilary had a, uh -- a list of requests. And I know I checked everything off, but it just feels like I haven't done enough.
Nate: Come on, man. This place is perfect. Food! Arrange enough to eat?
Devon: I have food.
Nate: Drink?
Devon: I have food.
Neil: There it is. Food and drink's covered. Have you programmed some music, maybe? Some tunes?
Devon: I have music. Yes, I have that. Just... we're have a small religious service, then a gathering back here to celebrate her life, but I don't -- I don't know if this is worthy of her. I don't know if this is enough. It needs to be memorable, and it has to be special, the way she was.
Neil: Devon... [ Sighs ] It will be. Hilary would love everything that you've done here, especially her portrait taking center stage.
Devon: Yeah. Something feels like it's missing, though, and this needs to be perfect.
Nate: It is. It's perfect, man. Only thing left to do now is get to the church.
Neil: Oh, and, uh, put on your tie, grab shauna. Let's go.
Devon: That's what the hell I forgot. I can't find my damn tie.
Neil: Hey, it's all right. I'll help you find another one.
Devon: It's a specific one. I can't just wear any tie, all right? Hilary's clothes were always on point. She cared a lot about her appearance. I'm not gonna say my final goodbyes to my wife in the wrong tie.
[ Doorbell rings ]
Phyllis: Hi. Too much?
Jack: Just right. I think hilary would definitely approve.
Phyllis: I wasn't expecting you.
Jack: Well, I thought I'd give you a ride to the chapel. Unless you're expecting my brother.
Phyllis: [ Sighs ] You know, I've pretty much given up on billy. He didn't show at the wedding. Why would he bother to show up at the funeral?
Jack: Well, in that case, I would be happy to take his place.
Billy: This has to happen by the end of the week. Okay, fine. Conference in your cfo. There's no time to waste on this.
Mariah: You're coming to the funeral?
Sharon: I wasn't planning on it, and then you changed my mind.
Mariah: Me?
Sharon: Your on-air tribute to hilary made me think about all the good things about her. Such as they were.
Mariah: Well, she did a lot for me.
Sharon: Which is why I know this day will be hard for you. I'm offering moral support if you want it.
Mariah: Yeah. I would -- I would love for you to come with me.
Sharon: Then let's do it.
Mariah: And this should be interesting.
Sharon: A funeral? Interesting?
Mariah: Yeah, well, knowing hilary, she's packed in a few surprises of her own.

Devon: I don't know where the hell it could be. I had it in my hand when the florist was here.
Nate: Maybe -- maybe it's upstairs.
Devon: It's not upstairs. It's not down here.
Neil: Okay.
Devon: Maybe someone stuffed it in a drawer.
Neil: You reached that conclusion five minutes ago. You -- you already checked in there. You checked in here. Now what?
Devon: I don't know. I -- I'm sorry to get so upset.
Neil: It's all right. You have the right to do whatever you want to do, to behave however you want, okay? Now, I'm your family. You can go off on me. Be angry at me. I got you.
Devon: No, it's -- I will be better when I can find my tie, all right? I'm gonna check again upstairs. Maybe shauna's seen it.
Neil: Hey. I thought he turned a corner when he broke down after mariah's tribute show.
Nate: Mm.
Neil: Now it seems like he's bottling everything up again.
Nate: Well, you know how this goes. Come on.
Neil: Yeah. There's no predictable way to grieve -- I know, I know.
Nate: Right. There is no emotional straight line.
Neil: [ Sighs ]
Nate: Okay? There is no magic moment when all the tears have been shed, all the what-ifs, right, dredged up, dealt with, put away. I mean, especially a tragedy of this level, right? Losing his -- his unborn child and his wife. Within days of each other.
Neil: I know. I know. I can't help worrying, though. You know that.
Nate: And from what I'm told by my mother, that never goes away, either.
Neil: Mm.
Nate: Okay? There's no time line. Parents always worry about their children.
Neil: Yeah, you know that's right.
Nate: But, as hard as it might be to watch, we have to let devon handle this at his own pace.
Neil: Yeah. I got you. Yeah, yeah.
Nate: All right?
Neil: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.
[ Doorbell rings ] Yeah.
Lily: Hey.
Neil: Hi. Got tired of waiting?
Lily: Just concerned. I mean, is devon and shauna ready?
Devon: Hey.
Lily: Hey. You look wonderful.
Devon: Thanks.
Neil: Let me look at you.
Devon: Yeah.
Neil: Yeah. Yeah, that's -- that's a nice tie.
Devon: Yeah. It was right in front of my face the whole time.
Neil: Well, what matters most is that you found one.
Nate: All right. Ready to roll.
Lily: Uh, yeah. I just, um -- can I get a minute with devon? Please?
Neil: Yeah, sure. Sure. We'll be across the hall when you're ready. Go ahead.
Lily: Thank you.
Neil: Uh-huh.
Devon: Neil didn't ask you to talk to me, did he?
Lily: No. I mean, he's concerned. We all are. But, um... that's not what I want to talk about. It's actually about hilary. There'S...something that I need to confess.
Charlie: I can't stand just sitting here like this. There's got to be something I can do to help. I could go downstairs and wait for the cars. I'll text you guys when everyone gets here.
Cane: Hey, uh, baby girl, will you do me a favor and go and help grandpa and uncle nate with the car situation?
Mattie: Oh, yeah.
Neil: Yeah, that's fine. We'll see you downstairs.
Charlie: I don't need to keep talking about this.
Cane: Well, it seems like you do, bud.
Charlie: It's just... I hate this. You know, every time it's quiet and I've got nothing to do but think, I just see the accident play over in my head like a loop.
Cane: Well, that's what happens with a traumatic event like this.
Charlie: It's not the event. No, it's knowing the truth about what actually happened and keeping it from everyone. How am I supposed to do that?
Cane: By remembering what's at stake. That's what you do.
Charlie: I'd do anything for mom. I'd even live with this forever if I have to. But dragging shauna into it? Asking her to keep quiet too? That's not fair to her.
Cane: Listen, listen. This is not about being fair, okay? This is what's necessary. 'Cause no one knows your mom drove through that red light and caused the accident. Because that is what this is -- it's an accident. Come on. Come on.
Devon: What's going on?
Lily: Um, I, um... I couldn't sleep last night. You know, I -- I did a lot of soul-searching because someone called me out on my true feelings about hilary.
Devon: Lily, this is not necessary.
Lily: No, I --
Devon: It's really not.
Lily: No, listen. I-I just... I need to clear my conscience with you. Because I feel so guilty about how I treated hilary. You know, you loved her, which means there must have been good in her. But I was blind to it. I was petty. I was manipulative.
Devon: It's -- it's over, though. It's more than behind us. All right? The only thing that matters is that you and hilary set aside your differences. And you didn't just show up to our wedding. I think you were actually happy for us. So however you did it, you and hilary made peace before the end, and that's all that counts.
Lily: [ Sighs ] You're too good to me.
Devon: Oh, please. Come on, now. After all the years you've had my back? I hope you're still up for it, 'cause I'm gonna need to lean on you today. A lot. Just like I did when you were trying to get through my thick head back at the rec center.
Lily: [ Chuckles ]
[ Sniffles ] No. You were always a good kid. You were just stubborn. But, listen, I mean, an apology to hilary in the eleventh hour doesn't justify --
Devon: Lily -- lily. Lily! Seriously. Seriously. I mean this. For half my life -- half my life! -- You've been my sister. By choice. Not by blood. You bought yourself more than enough room to not be perfect with all the gifts you've given me since I met you.
Lily: Heh... you've given me plenty, too.
Devon: I love you.
Lily: I love you.
Devon: And I'm really gonna need you today. And I know that hilary would be happy that I have you.
[ Knock on door ]
Devon: Yeah?
Mattie: Hey. Uh, the cars are here.
Devon: Okay. Thank you. Let's go.
Lily: Okay.
Devon: All right? Shauna?
Shauna: I'm ready.
Jack: No red carpet?
Phyllis: No, I think even hilary would pass on the "step and repeat" photo shoot at her funeral reception. But there will be one show-stopping moment. That is guaranteed.
Jack: And what would that be?
Phyllis: You'll see.
Mariah: Thank you. Hey. It's great to see some of the
gc buzz staff come out for hilary's funeral.
Sharon: Yeah. I guess they decided to come here, too. They took your lead.
Mariah: What? I'm no leader.
Sharon: You are now.
Neil: You shouldn't have doubted yourself earlier. Hilary would have loved the music and the readings that you chose for the service. And this right here, all this, it's exactly what she would have wanted.
Devon: I hope so. I guess we should get started, right?
Neil: Yeah. Yeah. Come on.
Billy: [ Sighs ] Excuse me.
Phyllis: You made it.
Billy: I wouldn't miss it. Hilary was a friend.
Devon: Everyone. I just want to say thank you for being here to honor hilary. It really means a lot to me, and I know it would definitely mean a lot to her, too. Hilary was a star. She was a star that shined brightly. I think some would argue maybe too brightly at times. I think my wife would probably shake her head and laugh at that notion, 'cause she always believed in going after what she wanted with everything she had. And most of the time she got it.
[ Mourners chuckle ] It's partly due to her talent, to her intellect. I think that we can all probably agree that it was because she was just so damn stubborn, right?
Mariah: Oh, yes. Stubbornness was one of her favorite qualities about herself.
Devon: Yeah. It certainly was. But, um... my wife was driven by passion. It was passion. And that passion caught us off guard at first. We tried to fight it for a lot of reasons. But, uh, eventually we couldn'T. And we were married. And it was supposed to be our happily ever after. But instead, we let that passion tear us apart instead of keep us together, and I regret that. I regret all the time that we could have had together if we hadn't been too proud to admit our mistakes. Um... but, still, hilary persisted. And she embraced a new passion of wanting to have a child. And for some reason, she wanted to have that child with me even though we were divorced. And nothing would get her to back off from that. Nothing at all. No rejections. No objections. No -- not how many times I told her, "that's not gonna happen." She kept at me. Until I admitted the truth. That I had never stopped loving my wife at all. Um... and then we -- we made plans to grow old together, to have a family... to have children of our own, and ones that would come into our life, like shauna. I remember just last week, the three of us were sitting around laughing about the thought of having little hilarys looking for their spotlight.
[ Laughter ] Uh... but, uh... that was last week. And this is today. And, um... I stand here more than grateful for her stubbornness. And for her passion. And even though I miss her with every part of me, I, uh... I know that, with her passing, she's made heaven a much more fascinating and beautiful place, that's for sure. So, um, to hilary, everybody.
All: To hilary.
Jack: Hilary was my executive assistant. But before too long, she was more like a partner. I sponsored her, uh, juggernaut of a show. And hilary went very far very fast. She was made for television. She was bright. She was beautiful. She was determined. She was successful. And she was my friend. Though I didn't always willingly admit to that. I think you all know what I'm talking about. How many -- show of hands. How many people in this room have ever had... themselves, a friend, a co-worker, a family member embarrassed or humiliated on hilary's show? Go ahead. Don't be shy. I think I'm in this club, too. Wow. Look at that. This would make her so proud.
Phyllis: She would be.
Devon: She certainly would be.
Jack: Hilary wanted more than anything to get to the truth. Was she blunt? Absolutely. Was she tough? Tougher than most. Was she loyal? To a fault. But she was there for me time and time again. Was I always there for her? Probably not as much as I should have been. There was one time I did come through. She came to me. She as ruminating about her options. Describing the perfect father for her baby. Down to the smallest detail. And I, as a friend, did not tell her what she wanted to hear. I pulled a "hilary" on her. I told it to her straight. The man she was describing was her once and future husband. We all lost a friend. We all... have smaller lives for it. But I'd like to think, in the days ahead, if there is a secret worth revealing, a truth worth telling, that hilary will inspire each of us to get the truth out there. To just take care of it.
Shauna: I-is it okay if I go next?
Phyllis: Sure.
Devon: Hey, shauna, you all right?
Shauna: I can do this. I can. If hilary taught me anything, it's that you need to tell the truth.
Shauna: I didn't know hilary very long. But she changed my life. When my guidance counselor made me join a mentoring program, nobody was more surprised than I was when I got a real fairy godmother out of it. No lie. Heh. Hilary actually whipped me up a dress for the prom.
[ Voice breaking ] Hilary took me in, and she trusted me. And I -- I --
[ Whimpers, crying ]
Neil: Well, okay. I really hadn't planned on saying anything. I figured any kind or positive words that I had about hilary would be considered phony. As most of you know, I had a very complex relationship with my ex-wife. You know, I'm not gonna lie. I spent a lot of time lording over hilary. I made it very clear that I was more ethical, more righteous, and better than her in every way possible. Well, the joke's on me, because hilary's actions crushed my empty words. You know something, she walked the walk. She loved exactly who she wanted to love, damn the consequences. And when she made a mistake, she owned that mistake. She apologized. Whether you accepted the apology or not. She learned her lesson, and she kept moving forward. She didn't just exist. She lived her precious life out loud and on purpose. We taught each other that it's better to forgive. There's more power in that than holding a grudge. I wish I'd have learned that lesson earlier.
Phyllis: Well, uh, my pal hilary, she was always up for a good time.
[ Chuckles ] And, uh, she was equally ready to fight for you, like a good wingwoman. And given my propensity for drama, I needed her on my wing quite a few times.
[ Mourners chuckle ] But I'm not gonna get into that. Hilary doubted, accurately, that I would not do her justice, so she has decided to speak for herself today. Surprise twist. Not so elegant, but, uh... she put pen to paper in the hospital, and she has a final word for everyone. And I'm guessing she didn't mention this to you.
Devon: I had no idea. But I can't wait to hear it.
Phyllis: Okay. Here it goes. "Welcome to my funeral reception. Thanks for coming. I'm imagining there's a full house, because an empty one would be downright embarrassing, and bad for ratings."
[ Laughter ] "And I'm happy that you have all already laughed a little in remembrance of me. Although, if a couple of tears haven't been shed, I will be insulted. Here's a news flash."
Mariah: Uh-oh.
Phyllis: "I cared about everyone here, even if i didn't always show it. So I will leave you with some final pieces of wisdom, confident that, this time, I will definitely get the last word. Neil. I bet you said some kind words about me today, even though you didn't plan to. You couldn't help yourself, could you? It's who you are. Grace, class personified. Despite all the ways in which I broke your heart, you had the generosity and goodness to offer me your friendship in the end. Now that I've got some clout with the powers that be, I will work on finding you a good woman who will love you the way you deserve. Shauna, sweetheart. This is a lot for someone your age to handle. But I know that you're holding up. You have the best man there is -- my husband, devon. I love saying that. He's standing by you and supporting you. And beyond that, the impressive family that comes with him. Don't try to be strong and silent. Tell them what you need. I wish I could be there in person to watch you grow into your own brilliance. You stay true to yourself, sweetheart. And as fabulous a guy as my nephew, charlie, is, he is no replacement for a great education. Lily and cane. Relax, lily. No snipes. No shade. Just a prayer that you and cane continue to appreciate how lucky you are to have your family back again. Don't take it for granted. Mariah."
Mariah: Oh, here it comes.
Phyllis: "I've got one thing to say to you, co-host -- you better start believing in yourself. And no eye-rolling! And, please, please, in the name of all that's hilary, upgrade your wardrobe."
[ Laughter ] "Then take everything I taught you and bring the show to new heights. And as far as your love life..."
Mariah: Can we skip that part, please?
Phyllis: "And, no, I'm not skipping that part."
[ Laughter ] "I'm happy you found someone." Jack. I almost didn't remember until it was too late that life's about more than work. Learn from me, partner, and put love first. Now, for all of you single people in the room, take a lesson. If there's an ex you still have a thing for, don't give up. If someone as headstrong as I am could find love again, it should be oh-so-easy for you. My final words are for my love...my husband... devon. There isn't a big enough thank-you. You've given me truly a wonderful life. Knowing you, you're trying too hard right now to make everything okay for everyone else. But once the funeral thing is over, I am ordering you to take time for yourself. Take a break for as long as you need. Neil won't mind. I won't let him. Don't look backwards, my love. Use the memories of what we had to launch you into the biggest and best life possible. Anything less, and I will be furious with you. I've quickly had to face a lot of regrets. And that's no fun. So I want you to make sure that you won't regret a single thing. And when you picture me, see me this way -- at peace, holding our baby snug in my arms. Happy. So happy."
"The young and the restless"
will continue.
Devon: Hey, everyone. I just want to say thank you for sharing all of your stories and your memories. And I hope you stay, because we're gonna be serving some food from a couple of hilary's favorite restaurants, and then we're gonna be showing a video retrospective of her work in the family room. So... enjoy.
Mariah: Hi. Marc, right? We met at the athletic club?
Marc: I remember.
Hilary: Are you leaving?
Marc: Well, I, uh -- I didn't know hilary for that long.
Mariah: Oh, well, that doesn't matter. You should, uh, stick around. Hilary always loved a good turnout, and I know it'd mean a lot to devon.
Marc: Then I will. Thanks.
Sharon: Is he from work?
Mariah: No. But I'm getting a weird vibe.
Sharon: Something he said?
Mariah: No. A cover story hilary told about "marc."
Sharon: Which was?
Mariah: Well, she said that he was a longtime friend. But he just told me they didn't know each other that long.
Devon: Phyllis.
Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]
Devon: Thank you so much for all your help with everything, from the wedding to reading the letter.
Phyllis: Ohh.
Devon: It was very special. Leave it to hilary to throw in a last-minute surprise, right?
Phyllis: It was hard to keep secret, but I think it's what she wanted.
Devon: Appreciate it.
Phyllis: Good. You're welcome.
Devon: [ Chuckles ]
Billy: Hey. Thought you could use a drink.
Jack: So did I.
Phyllis: Uh, devon?
Devon: No, no, no. I'm okay. I should go mingle, actually.
Phyllis: Okay.
Billy: So, was that difficult, reading the letter?
Phyllis: You know, it felt like my last conversation with her. I hope I did it justice.
Jack: You did.
Phyllis: [ Sighs ] It was a potent message, you know? I mean, it was all about how important it is to spend time with the ones you love.
Billy: And that you should live life in the present.
Phyllis: Yeah.
Billy: Be happy, and not sweat the consequences.
Jack: Maybe you shouldn't bend hilary's words to whatever it is you've got going on right now.
Nate: Hey. Ready to get something to eat?
Devon: I'm good.
Nate: You haven't eaten anything all day. That's not good.
Devon: I said I'm fine. Thank you, nate.
Nate: I'm just trying to help.
Devon: [ Sighs ] Well, you know what, you could have done a little more of that at the hospital. That's when we really needed your help.
Nate: Look, I'm sorry i couldn't do more.
Devon: No, I'm sorry for leaning on family when hilary needed the best.
Neil: Hey. He did the best he could.
Nate: No. No, no, no. Neil, it's -- it's all right. Look, I can't bring her back. And I can't make you miss her any less. But I can give you this certainty -- she got the best possible care.
Devon: We can see how that turned out, can't we?
Neil: The man is just trying to be up-front with you.
Devon: The man is trying to cover his butt.
Neil: Okay. I want you to think about it. Hilary didn't die at the crash scene or during surgery. Thanks to nate, she survived long enough to get married to you, put her life in order, and make sure that everything was gonna be fine after she left. Some people don't get that much.
Devon: Well, you know what? I think she should have gotten a little more.
Sharon: I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.
Phyllis: Thank you.
Sharon: You know, it hit me during the funeral how some people are never properly laid to rest.
Phyllis: Are you suggesting, uh, a prayer service or a couple hymns sung over a certain unmarked grave?
Sharon: Don't you ever feel guilty for what we did to him?
Phyllis: Hilary got the sendoff she deserved. So did J.T.
Mariah: So, how did you know hilary, again?
Marc: We were... acquaintances.
Mariah: Mm-hmm. Something doesn't add up, though, because hilary told me that you guys were friends for a long time, but you just said that you barely know her. So what's the real deal?
Devon: Is everything all right?
Marc: I'm just here to pay my respects.
Mariah: Why? If you didn't know her that long, you see she passed on the news, you heave a sigh about her being gone too soon, and then you move on with your life. The fact that you decided to come here and listen to people honor her --
Devon: I do agree with her. There seems like there's more to it. How do you actually know hilary?
Marc: Actually [Sighs] I was recruiting hilary for a national morning talk show in new york.
Mariah: That would have been her dream job. Did you know about this?
Devon: I had no idea at all, no.
Marc: And I have to say, you got it right in your eulogy -- hilary was truly a star. And I was a big fan.
Devon: So she was planning to move to new york? We probably wouldn't have gotten married, then, if it hadn't been for the accident.
Marc: You couldn't be more wrong about that. Hilary wasn't moving anywhere. As tempted as she was by the job, she turned down the offer flat.
Mariah: Why would she do that?
Marc: Well, she said she couldn't leave devon.
Devon: Now, is that 'cause she was pregnant? Did she tell you to make another offer after her maternity leave?
Marc: I did suggest that.
[ Sighs ] I pushed it. But she still said no. A firm no. As hilary put it, "a forever no." Because she'd be, and I quote, "an idiot" to walk away from the best job offer she'd ever had -- raising a child with you.
Mariah: Wow. Hilary finally put somebody else over her own ambition. She did that for you.
Phyllis: Hey. Where you going?
Billy: I've got to head back to the office.
Phyllis: What's so important that it can't wait?
Billy: [ Sighs ] It's a business thing.
Phyllis: What kind of business?
Billy: I got to go, all right? I don't want to be late.
Jack: What's wrong?
Phyllis: I think he's gambling again. I keep trying to help him, but he won't let me. Unless I'm reading all of this wrong. I -- I...
Jack: I wouldn't take those odds.
Mattie: You'll still have plenty of great opportunities, whether you stay here or go live with your parents. Uncle devon won't abandon you. You meant too much to hilary. And my parents, they'll help, too.
Shauna: Cane and lily aren't exactly fans.
Mattie: They're just emotional because of everything that's happened the past few days.
Shauna: Like lily catching charlie and me here, alone?
Mattie: They'll calm down. Eventually.
Charlie: Thanks, sis, but I don't think that --
Mattie: Hilary's death changed everything. You'll see. Mom and dad won't hesitate to support shauna. I'll go start laying the groundwork now.
Charlie: Well, she's right about one thing. You aren't alone.
Shauna: Stop treating me like I'm sad.
Charlie: Aren't you?
Shauna: I'm pissed off. Watching your mother pretend to be devon's perfect, grieving sister when, really, this is all her fault.
Jack: I admire what you said earlier, about admitting your mistakes.
Neil: Well, you know, jack, I'm just trying my best to live the 12 steps.
Jack: Well, I stand in awe of how the winters family has handled this tragedy. The abbotts would have fallen apart over much less. And, yet, the winters keep getting closer.
Charlie: My mom's not pretending or playing some part. Okay? She has no idea what happened. She didn't mean to hurt anyone.
Lily: Shauna. I -- I just wanted to tell you that your speech was lovely. Everyone was moved, and I know hilary would be really proud.
Shauna: How are you suddenly the expert on hilary's feelings?
Lily: Uh, I'm -- I'm not. I -- hilary herself spoke in the letter, and she loved you. I just want you to know that cane and I will do whatever we can to help you through this.
Shauna: Stop pretending you care. You still blame me for what happened to hilary, when really it's your fault.
Charlie: Okay, shauna, please don't do this.
Lily: No, I feel horrible about the accident --
Shauna: Stop calling it that! It is not some accident that happened to you. You caused it, lily. You're the one who ran through that red light. And hilary is dead because of you.
