Episode #11346 ~ Billy conspires with Phyllis; Devon gives Hilary the cold shoulder; Phyllis and Chelsea's game of cat and mouse heats up.

Provided By Suzanne

Previously on "the young and the restless"...

J.T.: You know, you spent half the night with billy.

Victoria: He wanted to talk.

J.T.: On the dance floor with his arms all around you?

Victoria: About phyllis and the possibility of marrying her.

Devon: Since the day you got to this town, you've been doing nothing but trying to mess with my family because you still get such satisfaction out of watching people suffer. I'd really appreciate it if you weren't here when I got back because, to be honest, I just really don't want to look at you.

Chelsea: Nick isn't christian's father, adam is!

Phyllis: It's a match. Chelsea was telling the truth. Christian's adam's son.

Chelsea: Let's get married right away.

Nick: We have our date booked for the church in july. So I need a caterer. Photographer. Minister.

[ Chuckling ] What?

Chelsea: No, I just -- I'm just thinking about you kissing the bride and the honeymoon suite. I'm just wishing july wasn't so far away. I wish we could...

Nick: Do you want me to call the church and see if they've had a cancellation to see if we can get an earlier date?

Chelsea: Yeah, I would love if you made that phone call. Yes.

Nick: I mean, you really want to marry me.

Chelsea: Can you blame me?

Nick: No. I love you, too.

Chelsea: Never stop.

Nick: Uh, chelsea...

Chelsea: All right, all right. Enough huggin' and a-kissin'. You, my love, have a phone call to make.

Sharon: I'm back.

Mariah: Hey, what are you staring at?

Sharon: Hmm, I -- wait, hey!

Mariah: Why are you looking at a baby photo of christian?

Phyllis: After everything that sage went through to have that baby, to pawn it off as nick's? Chelsea knew that story the whole time, never said a word.

Billy: You don't know when she found out, do you?

Phyllis: It doesn't matter!

Billy: It kind of does matter, though, I mean... what if adam swore her to secrecy? What if they decided that christian was actually better off with nick?

Phyllis: However it came down, the news would have devastated nick. If he ever finds out...

Billy: You gonna tell him?

Phyllis: I don't know. I was up all night tossing and turning, making myself crazy all day because it is on me to do what is best for nick, and there is no good solution. I do nothing, and I let him continue to believe that christian is his son... or I tell him the truth, that his fiancée is a lying, stealing bitch who's been conning him this whole time.

Billy: Either way, he's gonna hate you for it.

Tessa: This is for you. Devon said it was important.

Hilary: Where is he? Is he parking the car?

Tessa: He's not coming. That's your executed contract. He sent me to deliver it.

Hilary: [ Scoffs ] Oh, I get it. So devon is so disappointed in what I've done that he can't stand to look at me.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

J.T.: I made that for you. With candy contributions from johnny and katie.

Victoria: That is a really sweet gesture, but I don't need a reminder of our botched holiday.

J.T.: Yeah, right, I was thinking about that, and, um, since valentine's day didn't quite work out like either one of us expected... that candy comes with an invitation. For a do-over. All right? I'm gonna make a reservation at top of the tower, and reed can babysit.

Victoria: We -- we told reed that he could spend the night at troy's, remember?

J.T.: Oh, right. Yeah. Okay, well, I'll -- I'll text billy. He can wrangle the kids. And that way it'll keep him away from the restaurant and allow us to focus solely on each other.

Victoria: It's not all your fault, you know. I'm sorry.

J.T.: Don't do that. You don't have to apologize.

Victoria: I should have realized how it would make you feel, me dancing with my ex on valentine's, of all nights.

J.T.: So, do-over?

Victoria: Yeah. I'd really like to make it up to you, too.

J.T.: Great.

Phyllis: Okay, so, you are in favor of me keeping quiet.

Billy: Sorry, darling. This one's on you. It's not my secret to spill.

Phyllis: Okay, but if it was you -- okay? -- Wouldn't you want to know?

Billy: See, nick and I, we're opposites, so the hypothetical falls flat. Nice try, though.

Phyllis: Okay, for one minute, let's go with me keeping my mouth shut. Where is the benefit in that for nick?

Billy: He gets to keep his son. He loves him, raises him.

Billy: While he's married to a woman who is stealing from her friends and keeping a huge secret from her husband, and that's newly engaged, happy chelsea. Think about how off the rails she'd go if she ever gets unhappy.

Billy: Sounds like you've made your choice.

Phyllis: No, just -- last night, I was... tossing and turning, and the only image that would calm me down is seeing chelsea in prison. One quick chat with our favorite police chief, and she's toast. All it would take is a single phone call.

Nick: We'll take it! My fiancée and I have some details we need to work out, but it won't take long. We'll check back in with you tomorrow? Cool. Thank you so much they had a cancellation.

Chelsea: Amazing! What's the date?

Nick: March 26th. How's that sound?

Chelsea: I love it.

Nick: Yeah?

Chelsea: Yeah.

Nick: All right, well, I'll make sure the minister's available that day.

Chelsea: Okay, well, we should start getting going on invitations and send out an e-mail for the save the date.

Nick: Yeah, march 26th is like five weeks away.

Chelsea: Yeah. I wish we could move things along with the boys' adoptions, too. I already finished all my paperwork for christian. Have you started yours for connor?

Nick: I have. I'm almost done.

Chelsea: Good.

Nick: You okay?

Chelsea: Yeah, I just realized it's almost dinnertime, and as much as I much rather stay here and discuss our wedding planning, I have to go to my studio.

Nick: All right, I'll walk you out.

Chelsea: No, don't you dare. You cannot leave this place until you have booked our band and our caterer.

Nick: We have five weeks. Okay. All right. Minister, caterer on the way.

Sharon: [ Sighs ] I saw a woman with a baby earlier, and it reminded me of sully. I still look at his picture from time to time. I'm not moping or wallowing. I realize that he's nick's son, that he's christian now. But when I look at this picture...

Mariah: It must be hard, you know, seeing him with nick.

Sharon: Not until recently.

Mariah: Well, I was hoping it would get easier over time. Or maybe this is about what you told me, that nick and chelsea got engaged.

Sharon: Why would it be?

Mariah: Well, you just broke up with scott. Maybe you're feeling nostalgic for happier times.

Sharon: This is not about me reuniting with nick.

Mariah: It would be fine if it was.

Sharon: Okay, but it isn't!

Mariah: You're allowed to wish to go back to that time when christian was a baby and to think that maybe if things were different, you might be raising him with nick...

Sharon: [ Sighs ] That's not what I'm thinking, so can we just stop this, please?

[ Sighs ] I just need to come to terms with a few things and figure out how I'm gonna handle them.

Hilary: You gave me what devon wanted delivered. Why are you still hanging around here?

Tessa: In case there's any messages?

Hilary: Did devon tell you why he's keeping his distance?

Tessa: Oh, no, no. I am -- I am just the middle person.

Hilary: I've never been a "middle person." I am a direct, bold, outspoken person who did something that devon didn't like. It's not the first time, it won't be the last, but as always, he'll get over it.

Tessa: Um, I'm not so sure this time.

Hilary: What did he tell you?

Tessa: That any communication you have for him, that it should go through me. So, do you?

Hilary: No. Go.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

[ Doorbell rings ]

J.T.: Hey. What are you doing here?

Billy: You asked me to take johnny and katie for the night.

J.T.: Yeah, well, they're with reed ice skating right now. I mean, I meant for you to come by later. Did I not text that to you?

Billy: No.

J.T.: [ Sighs ] Between home and work, I'm juggling a lot, but I'm glad you could take the kids. Victoria and I really need some time alone.

Billy: Yeah, I, uh, noticed you two made a hasty exit from the top of the tower on valentine'S. I was gonna say goodnight, but things looked a little tense.

J.T.: Well, that's really not your business.

Billy: Well, johnny and katie live here, so it is my business to know what's going on under my kids' roof.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

J.T.: Hey. You look beautiful.

Victoria: Thank you.

J.T.: Well, I'm sure victoria would be happy to tell her ex just how happy the two of us are together, right, vick?

Victoria: Um, right. Don't you need to change?

J.T.: Yeah. I'll change. Yeah. I'll make it fast.

Victoria: Uh, so, what did I walk in on? (Cat 1) friskies world...

Phyllis: Just so you know, I have a life. You texting me and demanding I drop everything at your whim, not even close to being acceptable.

Chelsea: I need to know where we stand.

Phyllis: Well, I didn't believe you, what you said about nick and christian. I thought you were bluffing. Your ultimate con.

Chelsea: It's no bluff.

Phyllis: Yeah, well, that's the problem. You lie so often and so well, I had to get proof for myself.

Chelsea: What have you done? Who have you spoken to?

Phyllis: Wasn't easy, but sharon and I had to verify some facts.

Chelsea: You talked to sharon about this? The most unstable -- I thought you and sharon hated each other.

Phyllis: More or less. But we both care about nick a lot.

Chelsea: Well, if you care about nick a lot, you'll keep your mouth shut about the chelsea 2.0 scam.

Phyllis: You made yourself clear. It'll tear him apart. The whole family. Nick, faith, christian...

Chelsea: You think I want to use the christian paternity card? I don'T. But I will if I am pushed.

Phyllis: Don't you tempt me. You're forgetting that I can prove you ran that scam. The only thing that is stopping me from going to the police right now is your dirty little secret will crush nick, and I'm not gonna do that. So you're safe. For now.

Chelsea: Until when? Are you gonna change your mind tomorrow, next week?

Phyllis: Guess you'll have to wonder and worry.

Chelsea: Phyllis. Do not back me into doing something we will both regret.

Phyllis: Don't you summon me again, and don't think I've given up on nailing you. I will find a way. A way that will not hurt nick.

Nick: Tessa.

Tessa: Uh, I just wanted to say thank you again for letting me stay in your apartment building. It is so nice to wake up in my own bed, in my own place. Which is something, I guess, you can't really appreciate until you've been homeless.

Nick: I can sympathize. That's why my mom and I are started this project. You know, we understood your circumstances were critical.

Tessa: Yeah, but the other tenants that you've helped, they haven't hurt your family as much as I have.

Nick: Well, I definitely had some reservations, you know, considering the way you treated mariah and noah.

Tessa: And I couldn't be more sorry. But I swear nothing like that will ever happen again.

Nick: Well, you're apologizing to the wrong person.

Tessa: Well, I've actually been talking to mariah, and i think that we're on the right track to being friends again, but noah... he's so hurt and angry. I hope that'll get better. And I hope that I can make it up to him.

Nick: Yeah, don't bother. He took a job at newman enterprises, and the job is in mumbai.

Tessa: He's gone? Because of me.

Nick: Look, heartbreak is a part of life. And my son's had more than his share.

Tessa: I never meant to --

Nick: I know, I know. Look, I'm not happy that my son is now living halfway around the world, but hopefully he learns from the lessons you taught him.

Victoria: You were right. J.T. And I were a little tiny bit tense at the top of the tower, but it was mostly my fault.

Billy: What'd you do, eat all the chocolate covered strawberries?

Victoria: I forgot that it was valentine's day, the day for romance, and I probably shouldn't have danced with you.

Billy: What? What, J.T. Thought I was wooing his lady away? Come on. Does he have any idea that I was actually secretly freaking out and I was confiding in you because I thought phyllis was gonna propose to me?

Victoria: Well, you and i know that it was a completely innocent conversation, but i should have considered how it looked to J.T. And the rest of the room, and it was stupid. I also shouldn't have let myself get so distracted by work.

Billy: Come on, vick, you're being a little hard on yourself, don't you think?

Victoria: Oh, wow, that's a first. I'm usually accused of being hard on others. You, like when I fired you from brash & sassy.

Billy: Well, everybody that gets fired thinks that their boss is being too hard on them, okay? In retrospect, I will say that i made some bad choices, and you were right to let me go.

Victoria: I appreciate that. I have some interesting news for you. Devon found a thumb drive with video of hilary and juliet where it's very, very clear that cane did not sexually harass juliet.

Billy: Wait. She swore --

Victoria: She lied.

Billy: And hilary knew the whole time. Wow, she is a piece of work. Did she convinced juliet to files the charges, too?

Victoria: Hilary's advice cost me a lot of money to pay off juliet. It also cost cane his job.

Billy: Okay, but cane's not exactly innocent in this whole thing.

Victoria: No, he's still guilty of lying to lily and cheating on her. But there was no sexual harassment.

Billy: I hope you don't feel bad about the way you handled it. You did what you could with the information that you had at the time.

Victoria: It just makes me realize that things aren't always what they seem on the surface.

Billy: Ain't that the truth. All right, I'm gonna get going. I want to catch reed before he gets back here with the kids.

Victoria: Yeah, thank you for watching them tonight. I'm gonna text reed and let him know you're on your way.

Billy: I'd kiss you on the cheek, but I wouldn't want to make J.T., You know...

Victoria: Oh, right, thank you so much for restraining yourself. I know it's hard. Oh! Flowers? But you already got me candy.

J.T.: Overkill. Is it working?

Victoria: Very, very well. Thank you.

J.T.: [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You know, the kids, they're out of the house for the evening.

J.T.: Oh, yeah, so... let's get this do-over started so we can come back here and finish the night off, huh?

Victoria: Okay.

J.T.: Come on.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Nick: Can I get a refill, please? Hey, what's going on?

Mariah: Hi.

Nick: Uh, you out of coffee?

Mariah: Earth to sharon. Hi.

Sharon: Um, yeah, where's my head?

Nick: That's what I want to know. You okay?

Mariah: I think so. She's been od'ing on memorizing medical terms for school, so she'll start staring off into space and mumbling things like "arachnophobia."

Sharon: Side effect of being an older student. You never think you're working hard enough.

Nick: You sure that's all it is?

Mariah: Did I see you talking to tessa out there?

Nick: Yeah, I told her that noah moved to mumbai. Did you get a chance to see your brother before he took off?

Mariah: Yeah. I did. Things are still a little awkward, though.

Sharon: It'll all work out. Noah's very forgiving. Like his father.

Mariah: Yeah, maybe not so much anymore. I should have been upfront with noah about what happened with tessa. It was bad enough that I kissed his girlfriend, but then we kept it from him that whole time.

Sharon: Yeah.

Nick: Yeah, he felt betrayed. Three times over.

Sharon: By you and tessa and me.

Nick: Nothing worse than being lied to by someone you trust.

Mariah: Yeah, but it never starts out that way -- planning to lie, I mean.

Nick: Yeah, but it should never even get there. I mean, there's no reason to keep something important from someone you supposedly care about.

Billy: So, guess what I just heard?

Hilary: That there's a video of me with juliet that proves that cane never sexually harassed her?

Billy: See how easy that was? If you had done that months ago, it would have saved everybody a whole lot of --

Hilary: Thanks for sharing, but I don't want to hear it, okay? I've already been berated by victoria, cane, lily, and devon so I don't need another person telling me how awful I am.

Billy: You don't got to run out of here, hilary. I'm not gonna lecture you.

Hilary: Mm-hmm. Can I get that in writing?

Billy: I'll do you one better. Let me buy you another drink.

J.T.: Good evening. Reservation for two for hellstrom.

Okay. I'm not seeing it here, sir, and unfortunately, I won't have a free table for 90 minutes.

J.T.: Yeah, but I -- I made the reservation this afternoon online myself. Here, hold on. Let me show you.

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: What's wrong?

J.T.: I didn't hit send on the reservation. Let me ask you something. Do you know who this woman is?

It's my first day.

J.T.: Victoria newman. Does that ring a bell? Her father owns the place. So let me give you some advice. Give us the very next table available, put a rush on it.

Victoria: Don't worry about it. Listen, I'm glad to hear that business is doing so well.

I could --

Victoria: No, no, no. Don't worry. Really. We'll just go someplace else. It'll be fun. Come on.

J.T.: [ Sighs ] Look, I -- I got the whole thing planned out here.

Victoria: Do I look upset or disappointed? No! If anything, it'll force us to do something spontaneous and try something new. It's gonna be fun. It'll be fun 'cause we're together, come on! This puppy had nothing

Billy: Why didn't you come forward with the tape earlier?

Hilary: Why do you care? You're not exactly a fan of cane'S.

Billy: No. No, no, no. I'm not. Everybody knows that. But, you know, cane deserves the consequences of having a one-night stand, not a false sexual harassment claim.

Hilary: What do I get if i tell you?

Billy: A drink's not gonna help you sleep at night, but unloading might.

Hilary: Okay. I guess it's worth a try. Here's the truth. I am not exactly...rational when it comes to lily. Perfect lily with her perfect adoring father and her perfect adoring brother and her perfect adoring husband and children. She's never had to struggle for anything in her life.

Billy: Whereas you...

Hilary: I have had to fight for everything. So when I saw that cane had cheated, I just -- I wanted lily to lose for once. It's not fair and it's not rational.

Billy: I told you, no judgment here.

Hilary: Yeah, well, you were wrong about the rest of it because baring my soul -- no, it does not make me feel any better.

Billy: What about seeing lily hurt, watching lily's downfall? Did that make you feel any better?

Hilary: After all of the hurtful things that that woman has said and done to me... I thought that I would bask in her sorrow, that I would revel in the destruction of her fairy tale marriage, but... no. Not so much.

Billy: Well, you'll know better next time.

Hilary: You get it, don't you? You know that I've changed, that I've learned from my mistakes. I really have. But victoria and cane and lily and devon, they -- they don't want to hear that I've grown, that I've changed.

Billy: Well, stop telling them and show them.

Hilary: Yeah, well, I don't think a group dinner is in the cards.

Billy: No, no. It's not. That's not what I was talking about. Hilary, you have the perfect platform at your disposal. Use it.

Tessa: I don't know what went down with you and hilary, but she doesn't seem too bothered that you're upset with her.

Devon: Oh, well, that's because she's putting on an act. It's hilary permanent state of being, is acting and presenting herself in whatever way gets her over in the moment.

Tessa: Yeah, but why would she go through that trouble with me? I mean, I'm nothing to her.

Devon: Because she knew you'd come back here and report to me just like you're doing, so she acted accordingly. Don't fall for it, tessa, 'cause even when hilary seems sincere, she's not. You don't believe me?

Tessa: You know, I don't like her, I never have. I guess I'm just more sensitive after just going through a break-up. But noah's probably complaining to someone about how much of an actress I am. And none of it was an act. I cared about him. A lot.

Devon: Yeah, 'cause you're not hilary. You have goodness in you, and as smart as my ex-wife is, and beautiful and talented, I have learned the hard way that hilary is not someone who can be trusted. Ever.

Nick: Hey, so... I wanted you to hear this from me, but chelsea and I decided to move up our wedding date. We're now getting married on march 26th.

Sharon: Next month? Why so soon?

Nick: Well, why wait? The church had a cancellation, and we're ready. But I need your help.

Sharon: With what?

Nick: With faith. Chelsea wants faith to be the flower girl. Connor's gonna be the ring-bearer. We don't have a job yet for christian, but you can bet he's gonna be involved.

Sharon: That sounds nice.

Nick: Yeah. You know, when I wasn't looking, we became a family. We're adopting each other's sons.

Sharon: Well, that's gonna take a while.

Nick: Yeah, but we already started the process.

Sharon: Before the wedding?

Nick: Yeah. It's important to chelsea that we do this as soon as possible.

Sharon: But not to you?

Nick: Well, of course to me. Look, we're raising connor and christian as brothers. And we want to make it legal. I thought you should know. I got to go.

Sharon: Um, I -- I should tell you something. I don't know how to say this, but I've got to tell you.

Phyllis: Hey. I don't mean to interrupt, but i need to have a quick word with sharon.

Nick: Yeah, we were just in the middle of something.

Phyllis: It's urgent.

Nick: Since when do you two have pressing business?

Phyllis: It's about the hotline where sharon volunteers. I got this idea to donate clothing to the women who call in looking for help.

Nick: Uh, that doesn't exactly sound time-sensitive, so just let us finish.

Phyllis: It really is 'cause I got to get on top of it. You know, lauren has set up a meeting with hilary to get it on her show. It's all about momentum, which is exactly why I need to talk to this lady right here.

Nick: Okay. I got it. I'll let you guys talk. I'll call you later, we'll wrap this up? Bye.

Phyllis: What are you thinking? You said you wouldn't say anything to nick about christian.

Sharon: I wasn't going to, but then chelsea --

Phyllis: No, chelsea needs to be locked up and put away.

Sharon: Nick was just talking to me about people keeping secrets, and it brought me right back to when I lied to him about that baby, and I can't do that again. If we let him keep believing --

Phyllis: As long as chelsea stays in line, it does not matter if christian has adam's dna and not nick'S. It's not like adam's coming back from the dead to claim his son. You let nick stay blissfully unaware.

Sharon: I don't know.

Phyllis: This is the only way to handle this. It's the best thing for nick. Promise me.

Sharon: All right. I promise I won't say anything.

[ Door closes ]

J.T.: You just saved the night.

Victoria: So, did you like our horse-drawn sleigh ride around the park?

J.T.: Almost as much as i liked that five-star dinner.

Victoria: Oh, yeah. Hot dogs are wonderful, especially from a street vendor. Are you happy with the way the night turned around?

J.T.: Yeah. You?

Victoria: Yeah. Best do-over date ever. Except I'm so cold.

J.T.: Well, not for long. Where are you going?

Victoria: I'm going upstairs.

J.T.: We got the house to ourselves. Let's enjoy it.

Phyllis: How are johnny and katie?

Billy: They're good. They're playing, so I figured it gives us just enough time before one of them starts crying or screaming to tell me what's going on with nick and sharon.

Phyllis: Nothing to tell. I convinced sharon that it's good for nick not to know about christian.

Billy: So you talked her off the ledge.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Billy: Hmm. And what about you, hmm? You done worrying about chelsea?

Phyllis: For tonight.

Chelsea: What's on your mind?

Nick: Sharon.

Chelsea: What about her?

Nick: Well, when you left the coffee house, we kind of got to talking, and she said she had something to tell me.

Chelsea: About what? Noah or faith or...?

Nick: I don't know, I mean, something's bothering her. But before she could tell me, phyllis hijacked the conversation.

Chelsea: And sharon just dropped it, just like that? I mean, that's kind of odd.

Nick: So maybe it's not that important, you know. If it is, she could always call me.

Chelsea: Yeah, or maybe she'll talk to mariah about it.

Nick: Instead of me?

Chelsea: Well, I just mean if it's something that requires an immediate sounding board, they're already in the same house.

Nick: Yeah, that's true. It doesn't matter who she talks to, as long as she can vent about whatever's troubling her.

Victoria: I think I need to up your grade.

J.T.: Mm. [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: What's higher than an a-plus?

J.T.: Wow. Even though I didn't make the dinner reservation?

Victoria: Oh, no, see, that was the best thing because of what came out of it. We were forced to be spontaneous. We had an adventurous night. Didn't eat dinner in a restaurant.

J.T.: Well, there's actually another place I'd like to get some high marks -- my job at newman.

Victoria: Well, you're doing great.

J.T.: Yeah, well, I'm always striving to do better. You know, there's a branch of the company that caught my eye because their output decreased pretty significantly over the last month, and I'm wondering if we should check it out.

Victoria: Wow. Look at who's talking about work at home now.

J.T.: I can't help it. I want to prove that you hiring me was a brilliant move.

Victoria: I already know that it was. I don't want you going overboard trying to prove yourself to me and my dad at newman, okay?

J.T.: Yeah, well, when I left chancellor, I realized that I've spent the last few years feeling sorry for myself. It's a bad habit, and I want to break it. I think I can because of you. You know? You've turned my life around.

Victoria: I feel the same way about you, too.

J.T.: All right. I hope so. Because you've given me a job worthy of my capabilities, you've given me a loving home with your kids, and our kid. And unlike mac, you believe in me, which is a really long way of saying something that I've wanted to say for a while. I love you.

Victoria: I love you, too.

Hilary: Welcome back to "the hilary hour." Now, to close things out, we're gonna do something a little different. Instead of discussing a buzz-worthy topic, we are gonna focus on an issue that I find to be personal. Deeply personal.

Mariah: And since hilary is springing this on me now, I'm going to leave it up to her to drive the topic. Which is...?

Hilary: Lies. Specifically the destructive nature of lies. Whether it is outright deception or withholding information, lying tends to end badly and cause irreparable damage.

Mariah: I couldn't agree more. Got myself into a little bit of trouble with that lately.

Hilary: Yes, well, I'm sure we'll all like to hear about it another time, maybe.

Mariah: All right, the floor is yours.

Hilary: Thank you. Now, I have done my fair share of deceiving people. And I would like to take this opportunity to offer my very public apology for those that I've hurt. Now, I won't name names, but i am certain those who have most recently been affected by my dishonesty and my deceit will know that this is for them. In addition to the lies that you tell about others, sometimes the worst lies are the ones you tell yourself. You justify bad behavior. "She deserved it." "He had it coming." Or you dismiss something awful you've done in the past. "It's been years, better off forgotten." You convinced yourself that you're not harming anyone by letting your undiscovered offenses stay buried, but that's the thing about secrets. They never stay buried. And they never fail to cause pain -- pain that goes so deep it ripples out to other people and other relationships. How could saying "I'm sorry" possibly be enough? There's a saying from the bible. "The truth shall set you free." It's taken me a long time to recognize the wisdom in that. You can't love or be loved until you commit fully, honestly, so that you're not just existing as a pretend you, but the real you. Without truth, there can be no trust, which is the foundation of happiness. I've been the author of my own unhappiness by keeping secrets, hiding the truth. I thought I was doing the right thing, protecting someone rather than trusting them to hear the truth and make their own decisions on how they would react or respond.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Nick: Hey. What's up?

Sharon: I was about to tell you something really important earlier, but phyllis stopped me. Well, I'm not going to be stopped this time. You deserve to hear the truth.
