Sharon: Do you honestly think that I would say something that blatantly to our little girl? I-I don't know whether to laugh or to be offended.
Nick: Look, I am not accusing you. I'm just wondering if maybe you said something to Faith that she could have misinterpreted.
Sharon: I don't know. I mean, I don't know what that would be. I know that she would prefer that her mommy and daddy are together, but what little girl wouldn't?
Nick: So you think it's just a matter of fantasizing about what she would like to see happen. I mean, we have been spending a lot of time together. Maybe we gave Faith the wrong idea.
Sharon: You know, that hadn't occurred to me. We have been spending a lot of time together lately. But I saw that you needed a friend. You were dealing with the whole Summer situation. I just wanted to be there for you.
Nick: I know, and I really appreciate the support. Kids are impressionable. Sometimes they pick up things that we don't even realize and make their own truth.
Sharon: Well, would you prefer that we were hostile and fighting? You think that would be better for Faith?
Nick: No, Sharon, I'm glad that we have been civil. I'm very proud of the fact that we've been able to work together as parents. And we're gonna have to do that right now.
Sharon: Okay, so, what can I do?
Nick: I need your help to make Faith understand that -- that we're never getting back together.
Dylan: What's going on here?
Chelsea: Adam came to see me.
Adam: The baby was crying.
Dylan: Give me my son. There we go. You stay away from my wife. You stay away from my son.
Esther: I thought they did a lovely job with Mrs. C's obituary.
Jill: Yeah. I still can't believe she's gone. I keep expecting her to walk down those stairs and tear into me for doing something that she herself was responsible for. She always had something to say to me, didn't she?
Esther: Yeah. She still does.
Jill: What's this?
Esther: Murphy asked me to give it to you. It's a personal message from Mrs. C. to you.
[Door closes]
Victor: There you are.
Nikki: Hey.
Victor: I know what that is. You don't have to hide that from me.
Chelsea: Dylan, its okay. Really. Adam just -- he wanted to talk to me about his court case.
Dylan: If this is about you being a character witness, I already told your ex he has to get himself out of trouble without your help.
Adam: Chelsea was in the hospital at the time. With all due respect, she's out of the hospital, and she's capable of speaking for herself. You never got a chance to answer me. Will you help me?
Dylan: I can't believe you're asking her to do this.
Adam: You know I didn't do this to Melanie Daniels, and all you have to do is stand up in court and say just that. All you will have to do is tell the truth.
Victor: I know that was a letter from Katherine. I got one, as well. Murphy brought it to me.
Nikki: Oh. He did?
Victor: Yeah. See? So, she sent one to all the people who were closest to her.
Nikki: What does yours say?
Victor: She reminded me that she was largely responsible for my coming to Genoa City. And that everything that was good in my life, I partially owe to her.
Nikki: Well, in that case, I am very happy that she brought you here.
Victor: You know what she also told me?
Nikki: Hmm?
Victor: Not to take my wife for granted.
Nikki: Very sage advice.
Victor: [Chuckles] She was a very good friend, wasn't she? And she was more than that to you, I think.
Nikki: She was like a mother to me.
Victor: I'm sure that letter meant a lot to you.
Nikki: Oh, yes.
Esther: The note that Mrs. Chancellor left me, I'll treasure it always. "Dear Esther, Esther, if I'm being honest, and no one would expect less of me, you were a lousy maid. You couldn't dust worth a damn, and I could have read "War and Peace" in the time it took you to answer the door. But you were so much more than a housekeeper to me. [Voice breaking] You were my protector. My truth-teller. My confidante. You weren't just part of my staff. [Crying] You were part of my family." [Sniffles] What does it say?
Jill: There is a reason that she left these letters in envelopes with our names on them. Because they're private, Esther.
Esther: I understand that, Jill. But I'm sure that she said something as equally meaningful to you. In spite of all the insults that you two were always trading back and forth, I know that she loved you, even though she showed it in her own way.
Jill: Well, she found a way to show it in the end.
Esther: I'm glad. [Sniffling]
Jill: "Jill, I want you to have all that I value. Everything I can give you is right in front of you. You just have to look in the right place." Damn you, Katherine! Oh, my God! This is too much. You left me your fortune. I don't deserve that. Well, maybe I do deserve it, but I just never thought you thought so. "You just have to look in the right place." See? You're still doing everything your own way. You left me a riddle to solve. [Sighs] Where the hell am I supposed to look? What is the right place? [Sighs]
Nikki: Katherine knew more about me than anybody. I could tell her anything. And now that she's gone, I don't... I don't know.
Victor: [Sighs] I know, my sweetheart. I know there was a special bond between the two of you. I witnessed it many times, you know? Like the bond between you and Victoria. I just hope that... Katherine's passing isn't going to leave too much of a void in your life. And that her letter gave you some comfort.
Nikki: She just told me what she thought I needed to hear.
Victor: Well, judging by my letter, I think she told all of us what she thought we needed to hear. Even after she was gone.
Sharon: Well, once you marry Avery, I'm sure our daughter will get the message, even if she's having a hard time with the idea right now.
Nick: Faith has known this day was coming for months. Ever since Avery and I got engaged, and, you know, I've done my best to prepare her for it.
Sharon: I'm sure you have.
Nick: You know, we kind of stopped talking about it because of everything that was happening with Summer and Phyllis. But now the wedding's less than two weeks away, and I want to make sure she knew that.
Sharon: And, let me guess, our daughter didn't take that news too well.
Nick: It's like you said. Sometimes kids have a hard time accepting the fact that their parents are moving on, that they're marrying other people. I mean, I should know. I dealt with it when I was growing up.
Sharon: More than once.
Nick: It's really hard. That your parents aren't gonna have enough time for you. All of a sudden, there's this new person for them to focus on.
Sharon: Exactly.
Nick: What Faith is too young to understand is that the more people you love just means the more love there is to go around. It doesn't diminish what you feel for the friends and family that you already have.
Sharon: I know that Faith will always occupy a huge place in her daddy's heart. Same as always.
Nick: So then I can count on you? To help Faith accept my marriage to Avery. To distinguish reality and fantasy where we are concerned.
Sharon: I will do whatever it takes to make Faith feel safe and secure. And deep down, I know that Faith wants the same thing I want. For you to be happy.
Avery: Faith, if you want to take a break from your puzzle, I have something I want to show you. Um, these are some pictures that I cut out of magazines. The ideas that I had for the wedding. And I spent hours cutting them out, and I was gonna surprise your dad with them, but, uh, I wanted to show you first and get your opinion. So, uh, the flowers. I was thinking something, you know, bright colors, maybe something tropical or, I don't know, maybe something that grows around here. These are roses. They smell really nice and they would make a really pretty bouquet. Do you, uh, have a preference? Okay, well, you know, we don't have to decide that now. Uh... you know, we're gonna be getting very dressed up, and, uh, we're gonna have a lot of fun doing that, and I was thinking that tomorrow we could go out and buy you a new dress.
Faith: I don't want a new dress.
Avery: Well, I'm sure that you have something beautiful in your closet. You don't have to have a new dress. Um, why don't we go up there right now and look through your dresses and find the perfect flower-girl dress? Or I could go up myself, and I will pick a few things, and then I'll come back down and we can choose together, okay? Be right back.
Adam: You know I'm innocent, and I know you believe me.
Chelsea: I do, Adam. I know you would never force yourself on a woman. And if I were under oath, I would tell the court that that's what I believe. Unfortunately, though, it's not that simple.
Adam: Why?
Chelsea: The prosecutor. He's bound to ask me other questions about you, Adam. About the kind of person you are, about your character, the things that you've done, the people that you've hurt, and I would have to answer those questions honestly, too. Not to mention the questions that would come up about my character. Don't forget I used to lie for a living. I don't think I would be considered a credible witness, so, in the end, I really wouldn't even help your case at all.
Adam: It's a risk I'm willing to take if you are.
Chelsea: [Sighs]
Dylan: She's turning you down, Adam. She's trying to be nice, but she's saying no.
Adam: You have no idea how nice I am being by simply saying there is a woman that is lying about me and it could destroy my life.
Chelsea: Adam. Please. Even if I thought that this was a good idea, if I thought that my testimony would help you, which I really don't, I can't do it. I just had a baby. I need to be here with him, for him, focusing on my new son and my husband and my new family. I can't get involved in your life. I'm sorry.
Adam: All right. Thank you for your honesty. You're quite a lucky man. Take care of both of them.
Victor: I didn't realize you'd be back from Green Bay so soon. How did it go?
Adam: Unsuccessful, I'm afraid.
Victor: Mm. You didn't close the deal?
Adam: Oh, I closed the deal. But you and I both know that's not why I left town -- to get out from under the limelight while these charges hang over my head, and unfortunately, they have newspaper and television in the frozen north, and our new colleagues, they are leery of associating with Newman if I'm found guilty.
Victor: What did you tell them?
Adam: Well, I told them the charges are baseless. Didn't help much.
Victor: What would?
Adam: Complete recant from Melanie. Or the next best thing, an acquittal at trial, if it goes that far. So, Dad, you still behind me on this one?
Victor: [Sighs] You know Katherine Chancellor passed away.
Adam: Yes. I heard about that in the news. I am... very sorry for your loss.
Victor: Hit me much harder than I thought it would. But thank you for your consideration.
Adam: Well, my consideration only goes so far, where business is concerned, and I did want to talk with you about you and I wrapping Chancellor into Newman.
Victor: You're talking about a hostile takeover?
Adam: Chancellor's vulnerable now, and their stockholders would welcome a buyout from Newman.
Victor: You're asking me to take advantage of my friend's death. Is that it?
Adam: This wouldn't be the first time that you headed up Chancellor. When you first came to Genoa City, that's what you did.
Victor: Son, I remember my history, okay?
Adam: Look, you and Katherine were -- were old friends. And I'm sure she'd be very pleased to see you at the helm again.
Victor: Son, you have no idea what she would want.
Esther: Did Murphy give you your letter from Mrs. C.?
Nikki: Yes, he did. Thank you, Esther.
Esther: Oh, well, if --
Jill: Nikki and I are gonna go over the details for Katherine's memorial.
Esther: Oh, if I can help --
Jill: No. We can handle it. Thank you, Esther.
Nikki: Katherine's already pretty much made the plans. Jill and I are just going to make sure everything is carried out to her specifications.
Esther: Let me know if I can do --
Jill: We will. We will. Thank you.
Nikki: Okay. Well... I've already contacted all the people that Katherine wants to have at her big send-off. I have to say, some of them were kind of hard to track down.
Jill: So, are they all coming?
Nikki: Most of the people who were important to her, very dear friends, most family, they will be there.
Jill: [Laughs] Isn't it amazing? Even from the grave, she's still controlling everything.
Nikki: Yes, and everyone.
Jill: Yeah, I know what you mean. Somehow she's managed to provide all the answers while leaving big, gaping questions.
Nikki: Are you talking about your letter?
Jill: Yeah, actually, I am. I mean, her intentions were clear, I think. But her instructions were very, very cryptic. [Chuckles] On purpose, I'm sure. What I'm not sure about is what I'm supposed to do next.
Nikki: Whereas I know exactly what I'm supposed to do. I just don't know if I can do it.
Nick: Thanks for supporting Avery and me. I realize it's a little awkward asking the ex-wife to help ease the way for the new one.
Sharon: It's fine. I'm -- I'm fine.
Nick: Noah's had some concerns along those lines.
Sharon: Oh, is this about my medication?
Nick: I know you said you've been taking it.
Sharon: I have been.
Nick: Okay. I'm glad to hear it. You know, Noah's worried that you don't have anything of your own to keep you busy and focused.
Sharon: Oh, well, look who's talking. Noah's been floundering lately, looking for something to give him purpose in life, and all of a sudden, I've become his cause. But he doesn't have to worry, and you don't have to worry, you know? I'm doing really well these days. I'm doing exactly what I need to be doing with my life.
Nick: Okay. I'm gonna get out of your hair. Um...seriously, thanks again for agreeing to help with Faith.
Sharon: There isn't very much that I wouldn't do for you, Nick. Nice knife in the gut, huh? "Help me tell Faith that we are never getting back together."
Cassie: I know that must have hurt.
Sharon: [Sighs] It was a setback.
Cassie: I thought that you were gonna come up with a plan to stop Dad's wedding.
Sharon: That's not as easy as I'd hoped. But it looks like Faith might be doing that for me.
Avery: Okay, I found a few, and I think this pink dress is awfully pretty. Faith, what have you done? You tore up my pictures? Why would you do something like that? You knew that I spent so much time on these, how much it meant to me. It was not a very nice thing to do.
[Door closes]
Faith: [Crying] Avery was mean to me! She yelled at me!
Avery: [Scoffs]
Nick: So, you want to tell me how Avery was mean to you? No? Maybe we can talk about it later, okay? Why don't you go upstairs and get ready for bed?
Avery: Nick, I-I-I was only trying to --
Nick: Avery, you don't have to do that. I know you don't have a mean bone in your body, and I know you would certainly never be mean to my daughter.
Avery: I was trying to share our wedding plans with her, and I collected these pictures that were special and meaningful and beautiful. And I left the room, and I came back... Nick, what are we gonna do about this?
Nick: When you're a kid Faith's age and your parents are about to marry someone else --
Avery: No, no, no, no. No, no. I understand that this is difficult and traumatic, but I have talked to her, I have told her that her mommy will always be her mommy and that she doesn't have to compete with me for your affections, but, you know, obviously I'm not the person she needs to hear this from.
Nick: Yeah, I just left Sharon's. While you were out of town, me and Faith spent a lot more time with Sharon than usual. Now, whether that was because of Summer or Cassie or the big storm, we may have confused things for Faith, regarding my relationship with you and her mom.
Avery: Well, that very well may be, Nick.
Nick: Sharon is gonna make sure that Faith is clear about everything going forward. Help her accept that you are going to be in my life for good.
Sharon: You realize you're the only one I could ever say this to, that I'm hoping Faith, your sister, might be the key.
Cassie: There's no need to feel guilty, Mom. I mean, it's not like you're using Faith to promote your own agenda.
Sharon: Of course not. But if she happens to feel the same way I do, that your father and I belong together, well, I'm not gonna stop her from expressing herself.
Cassie: And if that causes trouble for Dad and Avery?
Sharon: All the better.
Cassie: You don't have much time, though. If the wedding is only a couple weeks away, then...
Sharon: It's less than that. I have got to come up with something. Something that will seal the deal for me. Something big.
Victor: Son, Katherine will be remembered and honored in the way that she deserves. Stealing a company away from her within days of her death is, well, certainly not a fitting tribute, is it?
Adam: I mean no disrespect to her legacy.
Victor: Son, even if it were possible, and it certainly isn't right now, we can't think of an acquisition until you're out from under your charges. Besides that, it's totally inappropriate to think about it.
Adam: I can operate from behind the scenes, and this is an amazing opportunity. It might not present itself again. It's the perfect timing.
Victor: I don't want to discuss it, Son.
Adam: I don't know, Dad. This is smart business. You can't let sentiment cloud your judgment.
Victor: Adam, you're asking me to dance on my friend's grave. What's the matter with you? Have you no heart?
Adam: What good is a heart when it can just be broken over and over again?
Victor: What are you talking about?
Adam: Nothing. Forget it.
Victor: Wait a minute. Don't say, "Nothing. Forget it." I asked you a question. What is it?
Adam: I went to go see Chelsea. I held the baby. The one that she should have been having with me.
Dylan: You've been pretty quiet since Adam left.
Chelsea: Oh, no, I just... I felt for the guy. You know? Couldn't help it. Couldn't have been easy for him to walk in here and see us so happy. A real family.
Dylan: Adam threw away his chance at all that when he chose Newman Enterprises over you.
Chelsea: And now he stands to lose that, too.
Dylan: [Sighs] Listen, I get why you care. I do. You two were married. You loved him. But he brought this on himself.
Connor: [Coughs]
Chelsea: Whoa. Hey. Hey, what's wrong? Why are you coughing so much, Connor?
Dylan: Is he choking?
Chelsea: No. No.
Dylan: I mean, is it normal for babies to do that?
Chelsea: I don't know.
Dylan: I just read about this respiratory infection that was going around.
Chelsea: Oh, my God. You don't think that --
Dylan: We're not waiting to find out. We're gonna take him.
Chelsea: What is it? Hey. Okay? Got him?
Dylan: Uh-huh. Yeah.
Victor: So, I asked you not to ask your ex-wife, what, to have her testify?
Adam: She refused.
Victor: How did you get to hold the baby?
Adam: She left the room briefly, he by was fusing, and I just reacted.
Victor: Huh.
Adam: You know, I can't help but think about if this had been different. If our baby had lived. Would we have made the same decisions?
Victor: You can't rewrite story, Son.
Adam: [Sighs] Nope now my future's up for grabs. You know, I once thought I'd have it all. Much like you, the whole page the life, the family, the thriving business.
Victor: Son, you're still very young. Come on, now. Once you're out from under the predicament... you can have it all.
Adam: Maybe.
Victor: Sorry for your pain, Son.
Adam: And I'm sorry for your loss, Dad. Losing a friend like that.
Nikki: I think that's everything, then, isn't it?
Jill: We've checked all the items off Katherine's list.
Nikki: Even up in the great beyond, she is still getting in the last word.
Jill: Just like she did with me the last time we were together. Without consulting me, she had broken our arrangement. She chose Cane to be C.E.O. of Chancellor over me.
Nikki: Did she tell you why she did that?
Jill: Yep. She said she wanted someone in charge who thought more like she thought, a more conservative leader. I thought it was while she was just away, but... Katherine knew that she was never coming back.
Nikki: And the last time I saw her, she was in the hospital. I told her that I understood why she hadn't told anybody about her illness. I felt exactly the same way when I had my M.S. diagnosis. You just... [Sighs] You just can't stand the thought of people who love you worrying about you. But I think I did get through to her, let her see that it's better to surround yourself with people to share the pain, the fear.
Jill: [Laughs] And yet she still went off on her own without telling any of us.
Nikki: Maybe by then she wasn't scared anymore. She had already tied up all of her loose ends. Even left a few threads for some of us to sort through. Anyway, um, I got to get home, so call me if we missed anything.
Jill: Yes, I certainly will.
Nikki: Thank you. Thank you, Esther. Bye-bye.
Esther: Bye, Nikki.
Esther: [Sighs] Do you need anything?
Jill: I thought we already had this conversation.
Esther: Sorry. I-it's just -- I just don't quite know what to do with myself without Mrs. C. here.
Jill: Esther, its okay. You don't have to fuss over me, okay? If I need you, I will call you. "Everything I can give you is right in front of you." "Right in front of you." The safe! [Sighs]
Avery: What if all this talking and explaining doesn't work? I mean, what if Faith never comes around and resents me forever?
Nick: That is not gonna happen.
Avery: How can you be so sure?
Nick: Look, I don't want you worrying about this, and I definitely don't want you postponing our wedding plans any longer. I'm gonna marry you on schedule. Faith is gonna get past her issues.
Avery: I wish I could be as certain as you are.
Nick: Avery, we're gonna get through this together. As husband and wife. As a family. You got to trust me.
Avery: Okay, when you put it like that, it's hard not to.
Nick: As for our wedding plans, you know, we're gonna start over from scratch. We're gonna make it the most beautiful day possible.
Avery: Okay, well, I think we should start in the morning, and at my place.
Nick: It's a date.
Sharon: I'm just not sure what else I can really do. I mean, after the conversation we just had, I can't throw myself at Nick.
Cassie: You're resourceful. You'll think of something.
Sharon: I like how confident you are.
Cassie: If Dad's racing over here, wanting help with Faith, do you know what that tells me?
Sharon: Avery's feeling insecure. You know what? You're right. She is feeling insecure. Those two haven't known each other for that long. How secure could that relationship really be? And if there's a crack in the foundation now...
[Knock on door]
Sharon: I bet that's your father wanting to talk some more!
Nick: You know, you hurt Avery's feelings earlier, Kiddo. That's not like you. Look, I know that...things are gonna change soon. And at times, change can be scary. Sweetheart, Daddy is gonna marry Avery. That's gonna happen. Daddy loves her very much. And I really hope that someday you'll love her too. But, Sweetheart, no one, and I mean no one, is gonna try and make you feel something that you don't feel, okay? But I need you to do daddy a favor, okay? I need you to respect Avery. Do you know what that means? Yeah? Good. And who knows? Maybe if you're really nice to Avery, you'll see how nice she is, 'cause she is so nice. Think you can do that?
Faith: I'll try, Daddy.
Nick: That's my girl. Come here. [Sighs]
Sharon: This is a surprise.
Avery: I thought it would be a good idea to talk. Clear the air.
Sharon: Why? Is there a problem?
Avery: Sharon, you're Faith's mother, and I absolutely respect that.
Sharon: I'm glad to hear it.
Avery: But I'm going to be Nick's wife. So I need you to back off and stay the hell away from my fiancé.
Sharon: I'm thinking insecure doesn't even begin to cover it.
Cassie: Find a way to use that.
Chelsea: Now, how embarrassing was that? Rushing our child to the emergency room.
Dylan: Only to be reminded that his lungs are still developing.
Chelsea: Yes, it's no wonder you were coughing, huh?
Dylan: That's right. But the doctor did tell us, when in doubt, to err on the side of having things checked out.
Chelsea: True.
Dylan: I panicked, didn't I?
Chelsea: You panicked.
Dylan: Yeah.
Chelsea: You did! And thought you were supposed to be the calm one in every situation.
Dylan: I know. I thought so, too, but I've never heard my son cough before. And that was new and I was gonna do anything I could to protect him.
Chelsea: Yeah. Well, now you can protect him by putting him in the car. He shouldn't be exposed to that many new people now, anyway, huh? I'll grab your coffee for you.
Dylan: Sounds good. All right, come on.
Chelsea: Okay, I'll see you in a minute.
Dylan: There we go.
Adam: Here I am, accusing you of being sentimental, and I get all maudlin about Chelsea and the baby.
Victor: I've yet been reminded again. We must never take our important relationships for granted, Son.
Adam: I'll take that under advisement, Dad. But if you would just keep an open mind about Chancellor. There's a fortune to be made there, and if we don't get it, you know somebody else will.
Victor: Son, I don't want to discuss that right now, okay? Anyway... sorry about your pain. Life doesn't spare us, does it? You and I have had tough childhoods, but, you know... it makes us who we are. Come here. It'll all work out, Son.
Jill: 10... 25... 28. Okay. I guess Katherine didn't use her birthday. Ah. Their anniversary. Okay. Hmm. Uh-huh. Shoot. All right, my birthday. Okay, so, 09... 29... damn it! Esther! I need you!
Nikki: [Sighs] [Crying] Damn you, Katherine! Why have you done this to me? [Crying]
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Delia: You forgot to kiss it!
Paul: There's been a development in the case against Adam.
Jack: What kind of development?
Paul: Do you know where Adam is right now?
Adam: Ted? Adam Newman. Get the jet ready.
