Chelsea: [Sighs]
[Glass clatters]
[Doorbell rings]
Chelsea: Adam's at the club. He doesn't live here anymore.
Sharon: I know. I also know he's miserable without you.
Adam: Let's do it at 9:00 a.m. My time, 5:00 p.m. Your time there in Athens, okay? Yes. And I'll send you an e-mail right now to confirm.
[Computer keys clacking]
Adam: Okay. I will talk to you then, Demitri. Yia sas.
Victoria: Is it really worth losing everything that's important to you just to stick it to our father?
Jack: And once I convince you to come work for me, I go about signing Phyllis. Then we get Kyle and Ashley to work alongside of us. We're gonna need them, especially as we expand.
Billy: Expand, huh? New cosmetic line?
Jack: Oh, no, no, no. Bigger than that. We're moving into fashion. I want Jabot to be known around the world as a house of beauty and sophistication with an integrated approach to cosmetics, fragrances, and yes, apparel.
Billy: You know, you're talking about a major restructuring here. Are you sure that's what we should be doing at this moment?
Nikki: Hi. It's Nikki Newman. Dr. Carlyle wanted me to call and schedule a follow-up appointment. Yes. Tuesday at 10:00 is fine. Thank you.
Victor: What's wrong? Why are you calling a doctor?
Nikki: I was just scheduling my annual checkup. I'm glad you're here. I want to go over some things about the wedding.
Victor: Let's do that over dinner, okay? I have a meeting with Congressman Wheeler. At his request.
Nikki: Well, if it's about Jack, please call and cancel it, because the man is in recovery. The last thing he needs is for you and your cronies to conspire against him.
Victor: Will you stop worrying about Jack Abbott? This is an issue far bigger than Jack. I need to deal with it.
Neil: Hey. Hey. Hi. Where you going?
Leslie: Um...
Neil: We're having an -- an early dinner with our vendor to go over the contract.
Leslie: Yeah. And like an idiot, I left the file I need back at the office. So just, you know, start without me, okay? I won't be long.
Neil: I don't think you should really worry about that, but if you want, I can call Devon. He's working late.
Leslie: No. No, no, no, no. Don't do that. He'll never be able to find it, okay? It's quicker if I go. Just honestly, trust me. Thank you. Back in a jiff.
Lauren: Were we wrong to take such an interest in a boy we barely knew?
Michael: No, Jamie is a good kid. He's in a rotten home situation, the kind that can leave permanent scars. And given the hell I grew up in... so how could I not reach out to him?
Lauren: But at the expense of our son?
Michael: Fenmore knows we love him. And for us to give a break to a disadvantaged kid, what did that cost him, really?
Lauren: [Sighs] Our time. Our attention.
Michael: [Chuckles] Baby, our son is a teenager. Since he got his license, how often is he even home for dinner?
Lauren: You're missing the point. Fen felt like we pushed him aside.
Michael: No. No. He built that up in his mind as a terrible betrayal. And all we were doing was being compassionate.
Lauren: Well, Fen didn't feel that way. He -- he told us repeatedly how unhappy he was.
Michael: Oh, so that gives him free rein to lash out at Jamie, to set him up as a thief, maybe even to -- to harm him?
Lauren: Wait a minute. There is no proof about that.
Michael: Look, good or bad parenting, we can't let Fenmore off the hook for this. That is not the way this works.
Lauren: And why are you so determined to blame our son for Jamie's accident?
Chelsea: Adam made his choice. He picked Newman.
Sharon: Don't go through with the divorce. Adam needs you.
Chelsea: Why are you even here? This is your big chance. You and your ex can finally be together.
Sharon: Well, he's in love with you.
Chelsea: Not enough. And I refuse to be somebody's afterthought.
Sharon: You know, if you leave him now, then the only thing he'll have left in his life is Newman. And he's already going back to his old ways -- fighting Victor for control of the company. There are some pretty high stakes there. Things are about to get ugly.
Chelsea: Not my problem. [Sighs]
Sharon: Of course it's your problem. You need to go and pull him away so he doesn't get hurt. You know as well as I do that you're the only person who can save him.
Adam: You want Newman back. You're here to put me on notice. Blah, blah, blah, blah. I've heard it all before, and I got the 411 for you, Sis. You and Dad and your minions, you don't control enough Newman shares to be making decisions.
Victoria: No. No, you and Jack and your cronies do. So you get to decide who leads the company. Yeah, I get that. But you could put Dad back as C.E.O.
Adam: But I'm C.E.O. and a damn good one, at that.
Victoria: Are you better than Victor Newman, the founder of the company?
Adam: If a fight is what you want, Victoria, I'm more than happy to give it to you.
Victoria: I don't want to fight with you, Adam. I just want to offer you some advice.
Adam: To shrivel up and die? Yeah, I've heard that one before, too.
Victoria: What is it that you want more than anything in the world? You want our father's love. You want to be accepted by our family. You have the power to make that happen.
Adam: By just giving the company over to Dad, right?
Victoria: All of the manipulating and the dirty dealings, everything that you've done will have been for a reason. You won't be an outsider anymore.
Adam: The prodigal son home at last, right?
Victoria: You can't tell me that doesn't matter to you.
Adam: Here's what I can tell you. The same thing I told Jack when he suggested the same thing. I give Newman back to Dad, he doesn't welcome me back into the fold. He sees me as a chump. Because our father, Victoria, has nothing but contempt for me. That's a fact. And if by some miraculous lightning-strike situation he's grateful, genuinely grateful, how long is it until he's upset with me again, until he disowns me, until he's disappointed in me?
Victoria: You know what, Adam? One day, you're gonna wake up and realize that you don't want to be an outcast anymore, and you're gonna look around and realize that you have nothing.
Adam: "Every man has a weak spot. So find it and exploit it." You have learned well at the knee of the master, Sis. But it ain't gonna work on me this time.
Victor: [Sighs] Surprised to hear from you so soon, Marcus. Hope that everything was handled to your satisfaction.
Wheeler: Satisfaction about my daughter's death?
Victor: Jack Abbott will not be charged with any crime. I told the press to stay away from the story. And you will be spared any potential embarrassment to you and your family.
Wheeler: That's all good. But none of it exonerates you for hiring my Stephanie to seduce Jack. You thought I wouldn't find out? You're not the only one with investigators, Victor. You used my daughter for your own sordid ends. She'd still be alive if it weren't for you.
Victor: Sorry about your loss, Marcus. And sorry for any part you think I had in it.
Wheeler: Nice almost-apology. But it isn't enough. You still owe me, Victor.
Victor: What do you want?
Jack: Wait, so now you're questioning my business judgment? This is why I want you on board. I don't want to have to do this alone.
Billy: You're still gonna be under a ton of pressure. You're gonna push yourself way too hard, way too fast. Look, man, I'll be honest. I think you could be setting yourself up for a relapse.
Leslie: Tyler, thank God. Come here.
Tyler: What's wrong?
Leslie: Let me tell you something. Guess who I just saw at the Athletic Club. Marcus Wheeler.
Tyler: What the hell is he doing in town?
Leslie: I don't know. Does it matter? I turned right around and left. We can't let him recognize us.
Michael: Fenmore's camera was found on the roof where Jamie fell. The last photo was --
Lauren: Was of Jamie holding the stolen box. Our son was trying to prove that he wasn't the boy we thought he was.
Michael: All right! All right. Until we can sit down with our son and hash things out, we're just speculating. But there's been a pattern of disturbing behavior -- Fenmore's rebelliousness, this burner phone.
Lauren: Right, so he could contact Summer! He explained that to us, Michael!
Michael: Jamie could have died in that fall! We cannot willfully ignore the warning signs right in front of us!
Chelsea: Even if I wanted to save Adam from himself, I couldn't.
Sharon: If you really love him, you'll keep trying.
Chelsea: It's not my love that Adam needs. It's Victor's. And even though he knows deep down he'll probably never get it, he can't help himself from craving it. So, do you see? No matter what I do, I will never be able to fill that void.
Sharon: Well, I'm sorry you're hurting, but, you know, if you give up now, it could be worse. You will always wonder if things might have been different if you'd just tried a little harder. I know because that happened to me. And that kind of regret can live with you for the rest of your life.
Chelsea: I'm not convinced that love actually exists. I think it's just a delusion two people create while they're together.
Sharon: Love exists. It's just that sometimes people give up too easily when things get tough.
Chelsea: I can't make Adam love me.
Sharon: But if you give up now, you know you'll lose any chance.
Chelsea: I've already lost, Sharon... the second you let Adam be your savior. He felt like he owed you for all of the things he had done to you in the past. This was his way of paying for his sins. And in the process, what do you know, those old sparks came back.
Sharon: Yeah. You're right. I shouldn't have let Adam help me. I should have been stronger.
Chelsea: And now that's what I'm gonna be. Strong. I'm not gonna make the same mistakes you did.
Adam: Everyone thinks I have this desperate need for my father's approval. But it's really you, Victoria. If Dad turned on you the way he has me, you would fall apart.
Victoria: You can't pretend to know me. You don't have a clue.
Adam: Okay. Well, here's what I do know. I stood there and I watched you berate Sharon, just tear into her for destroying Newman and allowing Jack to step in and take over. And you never acknowledged your part in that destruction.
Victoria: I destroyed Newman? You know, you're really not making any sense.
Adam: Okay, here, let me simplify it for you. You, Nicholas, and Abby, you all got together, and you sued Dad and the company for half-a-billion dollars. And you each were awarded half-a-billion dollars. That forced this company to be traded publicly. That means outsiders can come in and they can take over. And I've never heard you accept even an ounce of blame.
Victoria: And you never will. That suit was a separate issue. We were owed that money, and we didn't have a choice.
Adam: You and the others have vilified me. And now you come in here like the caring sister that wants to bring the black-sheep brother back into the bosom of the family. You're begging me to do the right thing. As far as I'm concerned, Victoria, I am doing the right thing. And that is what I am owed.
Victoria: I feel sorry for you, Adam.
Adam: Don't need your pity. I have everything that I need here.
Victoria: Yeah. You just keep telling yourself that, Adam.
Leslie: I really don't think Wheeler knew I was there. I mean, I walked in, spotted him, and got the hell out of dodge.
Tyler: Hey, listen to me, all right? It's been a long time. Like 12 years. Odds are, the guy won't even recognize us. All right, in the meantime, you cannot afford to be making Neil suspicious.
Jack: You practically begged me to walk away from Newman and return to Jabot. Now that I've done it, you want me to back away?
Billy: No, actually. I'm just asking you to take it slow. I think you're using work instead of pills to get over the guilt you're feeling.
Jack: Stephanie's death will be a part of my conscience for as long as I live. All I can do is move forward, focus on Jabot, focus on what is best for my family.
Billy: Yeah. But not at the risk of your recovery.
Jack: I'm under a doctor's supervision. I'm doing better, Billy.
Billy: Good. Stay that way. Promise me you won't take on too much. There are a lot of people here who love you. And we're all hoping you can beat this thing.
Wheeler: There's a lawyer who works at Newman by the name of Avery Clark.
Victor: I know her well. She's a good lawyer. I hired her. You're not implying that she has knowledge of my plan to discredit Jack Abbott?
Wheeler: This is unrelated. She's working on a case for the Innocence Foundation. A 12-year-old murder conviction in my district. Find a way to get her to stop it.
Victor: All right.
Wheeler: Do that and I'll consider us even. If not... well, I have a very long memory.
Victor: [Chuckles] I will see what I can do.
Lauren: You think our son is capable of pushing someone off the roof?!
Michael: No, no, no. The kids may have gotten into a fight that resulted in Jamie's fall. It may not have been intentional.
Lauren: And Fen just said nothing?
Michael: Maybe he panicked. Couldn't bring himself to tell us the truth.
Lauren: That is not how we raised our son!
Michael: Well, maybe he's just walking around with something terrible inside himself, something eating away at him! But, Lauren, we have to deal with this! We cannot ignore the evidence in front of us!
Lauren: Oh, my God. Are you listening to yourself?! Evidence?! You're not prosecuting somebody! This is our son.
Michael: It's our son... who was about to confess to something when you called me and told me that Jamie woke up and that he managed to say the one word before he drifted off to sleep, one word. Our son's name.
Lauren: Proves nothing.
Michael: Well, until Jamie wakes up and can speak for himself, I'm Fenmore's father and I feel obligated to get to the truth.
Lauren: You are treating our son like a common criminal. No, actually, worse. Worse, because when you charge someone with a crime, you at least begin with presumed innocence! Ugh!
Michael: Wait, don't. You can't leave right now. We are in the middle of --
Lauren: I need to think! I need to get away from you!
[Door slams]
Leslie: [Sighs] Excellent. Made it back before Sandler arrived.
Neil: Actually, he was here and he left.
Leslie: What? Why?
Neil: He had a family emergency. He had to cut the -- cut the meeting short.
Leslie: Oh. Nothing serious, I hope.
Neil: Well, it was serious enough that, uh, we didn't even get to really discuss anything. Leslie, you -- you really didn't need to run and go get that folder. I mean, call me crazy, but something tells me that wasn't the main reason you left.
Leslie: I'm not sure what you mean.
Neil: You know, when you took off, you were upset. Are you having second thoughts about being seen together in public? Because this -- this was not a date. This was a work -- working dinner with a vendor.
Leslie: Yeah. I'm a little wary still about seeing my boss socially, but I'm adjusting.
Neil: 'Cause I don't want to put you through anything that's gonna make you feel --
Leslie: Mnh-mnh. Mnh-mnh.
Neil: ...Uncomfortable.
Leslie: I don't want to live in the past, Neil. Especially when the present is turning out to be so enjoyable.
Nikki: Oh, Jack. Victor's not here.
Jack: I know. I'm here to see you.
Adam: Hey. Want a drink? You want to just sit down and talk?
Chelsea: The movers are at the house loading up my stuff. I just came to let you know that so you wouldn't have to pay for another night here.
Adam: Chelsea, you don't have to leave the house.
Chelsea: I can't stay there. It would -- it would be too painful.
Adam: I bought the house for both of us. It's as much yours as it is mine.
Chelsea: I don't want it. It would just be a reminder of the life we were supposed to share together.
Adam: We can still live that life. Just got to let me do what I got to do.
Chelsea: It's a pretty selfish condition, don't you think?
Adam: It's not a condition.
Chelsea: Adam, I don't want to have this argument again. It's over.
Adam: Okay.
Chelsea: Keep your mansion. Live in it. I've filed for divorce. I hope you won't try to make this difficult.
Adam: I said I would throw out the pre-nup, give you whatever you want. You'll be taken care of.
Chelsea: Of course I will. Financially. Since that's all you have to give to me.
Sharon: Hey. I just saw Chelsea leave. I'm sorry. [Clears throat] Adam, do you think that there's any chance that you guys...
Adam: She just told me that she won't live in the house that I bought for us. Does that answer your question?
Jack: So, I heard you stopped Victor from crucifying me in the press.
Nikki: Well, it wasn't right. I had to let him know how I felt.
Jack: Thanks. I owe you one.
Nikki: When I heard about your addiction... [Sighs] When I think of all the things that you've done for me, it -- it kills me that I wasn't there for you.
Jack: Come here. Sit down. I know how much you took on at standing up to Victor on this.
Nikki: I love the man, but it doesn't mean I have to agree with him on everything. There was a time when I loved you.
Jack: I know that.
Nikki: When I heard that Victor was going to exploit your illness, I was appalled. Especially knowing what he does about what I have to grapple with.
Jack: Well, I'm new to this whole recovery thing. How do you do it?
Nikki: Well... [Sighs] You don't grit your teeth, and you don't try to white-knuckle your way through situations.
Jack: That obvious, huh?
Nikki: It's a matter of learning what's important. Changing how you react to things, knowing that you're not alone, that it's okay to reach out to other people. And that's not a weakness, Jack.
Jack: No, I've actually learned that lesson.
Nikki: Well, from one addict to another, if you ever feel the danger that you're about to use, I want you to call me immediately, day or night.
Jack: I cannot tell you how much that means to me.
Nikki: Well, I'm very proud of you, walking away from Newman. That was the right thing to do.
Jack: I took over the company for the wrong reasons, and I paid a price.
Nikki: And I think John would be proud of you, too.
Jack: It's crystal clear to me now I was headed down a path that could have killed me. It just wasn't worth it.
Nikki: I wish Victor would make that realization. The way he's going after Adam... it scares me. I'm just afraid how this might end.
Jack: Hey.
[Door opens]
Victor: What's going on here?
Carmine: Well, it's my lucky night. What can I get you?
Lauren: Uh... I don't know. I've just been driving around, and I don't even know why I'm here?
Carmine: [Chuckles] The top-notch service, of course, from the bartender who knows your every wish before you wish it.
Lauren: I see. So, you know what I want even when I don't?
Carmine: Mmm. [Sighs] I'm seeing you wishing for a glass of Chateau Domremy. The '82. Huh?
Lauren: Does the club even have that? I mean, what is it? $1,000 a bottle?
Carmine: $1,500 and change. But who's asking? Um, yeah. We have it, actually, on the special reserve list. Sometimes, well, Mr. Newman gets a taste for it.
Lauren: Yeah, well, I guess I look really bad if you think I need that expensive of a drink.
Carmine: Well, sometimes it just helps to talk about it.
Lauren: With a bartender?
Carmine: Hey, come on. I'm a professional.
Lauren: [Sighs] I-I-I can't talk about it. So please don't ask.
Carmine: I don't have to ask, remember? I can read your mind.
Lauren: That's right. Yeah. Sure you can.
Carmine: I can. Seriously. Back in Jersey when I was a kid, my aunt used to babysit me, and she was a psychic.
Lauren: Really? For a living?
Carmine: Yeah. Yeah, she used to run a, what do you call it, um, a parlor. You know, those things. The, uh, palm readings, tarot cards, crystal balls. Yeah, you name it, she had it. She also used to run, uh, numbers on the side, as well.
Lauren: Oh, my goodness.
Carmine: [Laughs] Picked up a lot of useful stuff there.
Lauren: Yeah, I bet. I bet. Well, if it's all the same to you, uh, I think I'm gonna dispense with the mind-reading thing and just forget about what happened tonight. I just, uh... I don't even want to remember it.
Carmine: Well, in that case, I know just the thing.
Lauren: [Sighs]
Nikki: Please don't turn this into something it isn't.
Jack: I came to thank Nikki for putting a muzzle on you and to seek her advice in dealing with my recovery. I know you don't care that I could have died from those pills, but thankfully your, uh, fiancée has a little more compassion. Good night.
[Door closes]
Nikki: Thank you for not causing a scene.
Victor: So, you actually think he came here to solicit your advice for his addiction? Is that it?
Nikki: Jack is taking control of his life, and I admire him for that. And that's all I have to say about it. Now, what did Congressman Wheeler want?
Victor: Congressman Wheeler asked me to pull Avery Clark off some charity case.
Nikki: Why would he think you owe him a favor?
Victor: Because politicians always want favors, okay? So, what's this with Jack Abbott?
Nikki: Look, I am not going to turn my back on a friend just because you hate him. There was a time he was a very important person in my life.
Victor: And you honestly don't think that I'm gonna ask you questions when someone whose guts I hate, who was involved with you stands here alone in a living room with you?
Nikki: Jack realizes that he went after Newman for all the wrong reasons. It was a toxic situation that could have killed him. And I wish to God that you would realize the same thing before it's too late.
Adam: I am now in charge of Newman. And apparently this means I will be sacrificing any kind of a relationship that I can have with my siblings, my father... and now my wife. Am I wrong for thinking that I don't have to let go? Because there are people out there who are telling me that if I don't let go... I will end up with nothing.
Sharon: Well, that's complicated. I don't know how to answer that.
Adam: Try.
Sharon: Well, if the reason that you're holding on to the company is because you want to prove something to your family or get back at them, then that would be the wrong reason. But if that's not your intention, then why exclude them?
Adam: Meaning what?
Sharon: Maybe let Victoria work alongside you, offer Nick a job. I mean, if he'll take it. Let them know that you want to be a part of the family, even if you won't let them steamroll over you.
Adam: So, even though they don't want me, I'm supposed to want them?
Sharon: They may surprise you. And after everything that you've sacrificed, what do you have to lose?
Carmine: "I see you surrounded by a bunch of smiling men with baseball bats. I see your kneecaps being busted if you don't pay back the money you owe."
Lauren: [Laughing] Come on.
Carmine: I'm telling you, my Aunt Roselle was not a woman you wanted to mess with.
Lauren: Sure.
Carmine: How's the vino?
Lauren: Mmm. Heavenly. I, uh, I can't believe you opened the bottle.
Carmine: Well, sometimes wine goes bad. It's called oxidation. And then you know what it's good for? Salad.
Lauren: Ah. [Laughs] Well, this definitely did not go bad, and I have no idea what you're gonna tell your manager.
Carmine: Well, let me see. [Sighs] Well, the color looked off. Should be a deep, rich red, and this was kind of pruney.
Lauren: Definitely.
Carmine: Couldn't be going serving to Mr. Billionaire connoisseur if it didn't look right, now could I?
Lauren: [Laughs] I can't believe I'm laughing. Especially after the night I had. How you do it?
Carmine: It's a gift. Oh, and look, your glass is almost empty.
Lauren: Aw.
Carmine: Now, we can't have that, now can we?
Lauren: No, no. Definitely not.
Carmine: All right. I'll be right back.
Lauren: Okay.
Michael: Hey.
Lauren: [Sighs] Did you follow me?
Michael: Uh, I had to stop by work. On my way home, I noticed your car outside. Uh... I hate that we fought. We have to face this together as a family. Sorry if I offended you. That is the very last thing that I intended to do.
Lauren: I'm sorry, too.
Michael: Let's go home.
Lauren: [Sighs] Okay.
Michael: You okay?
Lauren: Yeah.
Billy: Adam is not my favorite person by any stretch of imagination, but... I don't know. I can't help but feel for the guy.
Victoria: No, you can help it.
Billy: I'm trying, okay? But... I'd just hate to be as alone as he is right now. I-I wouldn't want to live my life without you or Reed or Delia or Johnny. He might have ousted me from my job, but he will never have what I have.
Victoria: You know what? I can't imagine my life without you, either, Billy. And I really appreciate you being okay with me trying to help my dad. But I will never put business in front of our family.
Billy: Neither will I. I promise, Honey.
Victoria: You better not.
[Doorbell rings]
Victor: You're about to issue some ultimatum about Newman?
Adam: Actually, I'm here to talk about family.
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Sharon: You think you know everything there is to know about a person.
Nick: Hey, I got a few surprises left in me.
Adriana: I never said anything about any cops. Noah, are you talking to Chavez behind my back?
Tucker: I'm leaving Genoa City.
