Episode # 9952 ~ Billy Is Pressured to Let Phyllis Go
Provided By Suzanne

Summer: This can't be happening.
Daniel: I understand it's late. I understand it's late, um, but this is really, really an emergency. Yes, I-I can wait for you. Please, just get here as fast as you can. Thank you.
Summer: Oh, Aunt Vicki. Thank God you're here. M-mom was just arrested in front of the whole place.
Victoria: Phyllis? What? What happened?
Summer: I'm sure people are tweeting about it already.
Daniel: Okay, look, I do not care what anybody says. I just care about Mom.
Summer: Who'd she try to kill?
Victoria: What?
Summer: They said attempted murder. Tell me! Why can't I know?
Daniel: Look, it was a long time ago. The police think she may have tried to kill Paul and Christine.
Summer: How?
Daniel: I don't know. I don't have all the details, which is why I want to get over to the station right now, but I can't, because the sitter's on the other side of town, and I have to wait here for her.
Victoria: Okay, I'll watch the girls so you can go. It's fine.
Summer: I want to go, too.
Daniel: No, no, no, no, no. You're not going anywhere. Nick said no.
Summer: But--
Victoria: Summer.
Daniel: Okay, well, are you sure?
Victoria: Yeah.
Daniel: Thank you. I owe you one. There we go.
Victoria: We'll be fine.
Summer: This is so not fair. Why does everyone treat me like I'm a baby?
Billy: Well... welcome. (Chuckles) I was surprised to get your phone call. Happily, of course.
Woman: My meeting in Chicago wrapped early, and I was so anxious to see where "Restless Style" comes together every month, so I thought I'd pop in. I hope that's okay.
Billy: Oh, absolutely. The sooner you and the other producers get a feel for the place, the better, although I am a bit disappointed. I wanted you to meet Phyllis...
Woman: Mm.
Billy: My editor in chief and right-hand woman, but it seems she won't answer her phone. Sorry.
Chris: I can't wait for Paul to hear the good news. God knows he could use some.
Heather: You're right, he could.
Avery: Okay, Michael, can we get on with this, please?
Michael: Has Phyllis been read her rights?
Ronan: She has.
Phyllis: I was arrested in front of my children. Was that necessary?
Nick: Don't worry about the kids. I'll make sure they're okay.
Phyllis: Thank you.
Nick: You're in good hands with Avery. Just keep me posted. I gotta get back to Summer.
Bonnie: Mr. Newman?
Victor: Yes, Bonnie?
Bonnie: Sorry to disturb you, but the cook wants to know if Ms. Newman will be joining you for dinner.
Victor: No, thank you. Um, Sharon is on her way to New York, okay? Thank you for asking.
Victor: Or so she says.
Woman: Fasten your seat belt, please. We'll be landing in Leavenworth soon.
Adam: You still in there? You didn't jump out the window, right? Get cold feet?
Chelsea: You won't get rid of me that easily.
Adam: Like I would even try.
Chelsea: You say that now.
Adam: Oh, hey.
Chelsea: Hey.
Adam: Well, I'll be saying it 50 years from now, too, when we're old and sitting on rocking chairs. And when we're not hollering at people to get off the lawn, we'll be having this exact same conversation.
Chelsea: Really? We'll be talking about the wedding dress I picked?
Adam: Ah.
Chelsea: Ha.
Adam: So you picked one, huh? Excellent.
Chelsea: Are you joking? There were so many gorgeous options, Adam.
Adam: Glad you're pleased.
Chelsea: They're all great, and it was hard narrowing it down to three, let alone one. Thought I'd have to flip a coin. Hope you approve.
Adam: I'm sure I will, tomorrow.
Chelsea: No! (Laughs) Not one little peek? Come on.
Adam: Not a peek, no, no. We're sticking with tradition all the way, and there are rules. I cannot see you in your dress, but I don't think there are rules about seeing you out of your dress.
Chelsea: Hmm.
Adam: Wow.
Chelsea: (Laughs) Well, I've never heard that the groom isn't allowed to see the bride in the rest of her trousseau. (Laughing)
Adam: Wow.
Victor: Hi, this is Victor Newman. Uh, I've been looking for my son Adam, and whenever I call his suite, there's no answer, so would you kindly check in the gym or the dining room? He did? Uh, did he tell the front desk where he was going? Oh, okay. Thank you.
(Cell phone rings)
Victor: Yes?
Nick: Well, it happened, just like I was afraid it would. Phyllis has been arrested.
Victor: Where?
Nick: Crimson Lights.
Victor: You mean, she was arrested in public?
Nick: Yeah, I was here when it went down. I followed 'em over to the station, but now I came back to get Summer. I'm calling 'cause I need a favor, Dad.
Victor: What is it, Son?
Nick: Because of all this, I'm running late. Faith's nanny can't stay any later. They're down at the tack house, and I cannot get ahold of Sharon.
Victor: Have the nanny, uh, bring Faith up to the main house, all right?
Nick: Thanks, Dad. I appreciate it.
Nick: Hey.
Summer: Hey. Mm. Is Mom okay?
Nick: She's hanging in there. Avery's doing everything she can to get her out on bail. There wasn't anything I could do there, so I came back to get you.
Summer: Okay.
Nick: Hey.
Victoria: Hi.
Nick: (Sighs) Do you know where Daniel is?
Victoria: Well, he was anxious to see Phyllis, so I offered to stay with Lucy until her nanny showed up.
Summer: How soon will we know about bail?
Nick: Avery will call as soon as she knows anything. Can you watch the kids for a second? I need to talk to your Aunt Victoria.
Summer: (Sighs) Fine.
Victoria: So, is it true? Did Phyllis, uh...
Nick: Let's hope a jury doesn't think so.
Victoria: You know, I remember hearing a while ago about Paul and Christine, but I-I mean, did you ever have any clue that she might be involved?
Nick: None.
Victoria: You didn't stay with her at the station.
Nick: I needed to be here for my kids.
Victoria: Well, I'm here for you, okay? Whatever you need.
Paul: So I assume that your showing up this late means something has changed. Is it good or bad?
Heather: This isn't about your case. Phyllis has been arrested for the hit-and-run.
Chris: What's the deal with you defying me and refusing to handcuff Phyllis?
Ronan: It wasn't necessary.
Chris: It's standard procedure. If any other agent had tried to pull that--
Ronan: Listen, Christine, her kids were standing there, okay?
Chris: Ronan, do not, I repeat, do not let your personal feelings interfere with how you handle this case.
Ronan: Ditto, Counselor.
Avery: This is a dubious case at best. For one thing, it's ancient. There are no witnesses that saw the driver of the car, no one can put Phyllis at the scene, and this is based on a very shaky statute.
Michael: We have proof you rented the car. We have proof you possess the computer skills necessary to tamper with records in order to cover your tracks. We have proof of your longstanding animosity towards Christine. As your dear friend, I wish this wasn't happening, but it is. As the district attorney and someone who has spent most of their career on the other side of the courtroom, I know something about what will sway a jury. You're in trouble, Phyllis.
Avery: What can you offer us?
Billy: Hey, Babe.
Victoria: Oh, hey there.
Billy: Marianne Fetters, this is my wife, Victoria Newman Abbott. Marianne's the producer I've been telling you about. She's gonna head up our TV show.
Victoria: Oh. Well, it's nice to finally meet you. Welcome to Genoa City.
Marianne: Mm-hmm. Oh, thank you.
Billy: And this cute little girl right here actually belongs to a friend of ours...
John: (Fusses)
Billy: Did John here-- yeah, this is the guy that runs stuff at our household, aren't you?
Marianne: Well, hello, young man. Your cell phone pictures don't do you justice.
Victoria: He's a handsome devil, just like his daddy.
Billy: Oh, shucks.
Marianne: Oh, I know Billy's missed his family terribly, spending so much time in L.A.
Victoria: Yeah, well, we are happy to have him home, that is for sure.
John: (Fussing)
Billy: So, Marianne, would you like a coffee, lemonade, smoothie? The shortbread cookies are really good, aren't they? You like 'em.
Marianne: No, you stay and visit with your wife. I'll grab some coffee. Can I get you anything?
Billy: No, I'm good, thanks.
Victoria: Me, too.
Marianne: All right.
Victoria: Hey.
Billy: Well...
Victoria: What's the matter?
Billy: What's the story? What's Lucy doing here, huh? Why do you have her?
John: (Fusses)
Billy: Whoa.
Victoria: Well, uh, Phyllis and Daniel were here awhile ago.
Billy: Phyllis? I've been looking for Phyllis.
John: (Cries)
Billy: Marianne wants to meet her. I know!
Victoria: Phyllis is in jail.
Billy: She's what?
Victoria: She was arrested for attempted murder.
Michael: If you're looking to plea-bargain, I'll see what I can do. I can't make any promises. The feds will have to approve any deal.
Phyllis: You mean Christine will have to approve it, right?
Avery: Phyllis. Phyllis--
Phyllis: No, seriously, she's licking her chops right now.
Michael: Why did you have to do this in the first--?
Phyllis: Don't you know that I would approach this differently?
Avery: Phyllis, stop talking.
Phyllis: And by the way, people change. You should know that better than anyone, Michael, Mr. District Attorney.
Man: Booking's free now.
Avery: Okay, listen to me. You go with the officer-- its okay-- and you keep quiet.
Michael: The subject of a plea bargain has been broached.
Chris: I'm listening.
Avery: Aggravated battery, two years, suspended, fine, community service.
Chris: All right, before we go any further, I won't even consider a deal that doesn't involve prison time.
Victor: Bonnie is with Faith upstairs. She already drifted off.
Summer: I'm gonna watch a movie and forget this whole stupid day ever happened.
Nick: She's upset.
Victor: Yeah, as well she should be.
Nick: Where's Sharon?
Victor: I have no idea.
Nick: I've gotta call Noah, let him know about Phyllis. I don't want him reading about this online.
Victor: Listen, why don't I call Noah? You just spend some time with the girls. I think they're upset, okay?
Nick: Thanks, Dad.
Victor: Hey, Noah. Yeah, your granddad. How are you? Good. Listen, I'm--I'm sorry to call so late, but, um... no, everything is fine. Well, Phyllis was arrested. But before we get into that, uh, kindly put your mother on the horn, okay? I'd like to talk to her. What do you mean, she isn't there?
Chelsea: Now the only thing that I have left to do is find a tailor to alter that dress that I picked.
Adam: You know what? Uh, talk to Mrs. Cobb, the lady that owns this place. She's, uh, she'll probably have someone good to recommend. Um...
Chelsea: Hmm?
Adam: And while you're doing that, I'm going to, uh, I'm gonna head out to the farm today. I know you're gonna go there tomorrow. I want you to see it, but I think I want to spend a little time there alone. It's usually where I feel closest to my mom.
Chelsea: Yeah. You don't have to explain. Its fine, Adam. Go ahead.
Adam: I love you... this much.
Chelsea: Jeez! (Laughing)
Adam: Mwah!
Victoria: Okay, thanks for picking her up. (Sighs)
Billy: So Phyllis tried to mow down Paul and Christine?
Victoria: Tried and succeeded. At least, that's what they're saying, and this case has been cold for, God, close to 20 years.
Billy: (Scoffs) It had to come out now?
Victoria: (Sighs)
Billy: You think it's true?
Victoria: I guess we'll find out.
Billy: Oh, man, wait till this hits the web, if it hasn't already. (Chuckles)
Victoria: Do you think this will affect the TV show?
Billy: How could it not?
Victoria: Well, what are you gonna do now?
Billy: Hell if I know. (Shudders)
(Cell phone rings)
Victoria: It's Daniel, oh. Hey, Daniel. Yeah, the nanny just came for Lucy.
Marianne: Sorry that took so long.
Billy: Oh, it's fine. (Clears throat) Look, Marianne, I need you to, um, brace yourself for a moment.
Marianne: What's going on?
Billy: See, Phyllis just got arrested, apparently, for trying to kill someone... two people, actually, with a car.
Marianne: I see.
Billy: Yeah. Apparently, it happened a long time ago, but I guess new evidence just came to light, so...
Marianne: I have to make some phone calls. I'll meet you back at the office later.
Billy: Okay.
Daniel: Where's Mom?
Avery: She's being booked.
Daniel: How is she?
Avery: (Sighs) It's not good, Daniel.
Chris: Phyllis is being processed as we speak.
Paul: You know what's really blowing my mind is that we didn't even suspect her at the time.
Chris: Phyllis covered her tracks so well, until...
Paul: She made enemies with Ricky and Daisy, and they were determined to bring her down, whether or not they were working together. And if that night hadn't happened... things would have been so much different.
Chris: I'll tell you this-- Phyllis is not gonna get away with it. She left us for dead, lying in the street.
Paul: Yeah. You know, all these years, living in the same town with that woman, making peace, even offering my friendship, and the whole time, she knew what she had done to us. I'll bet she never even lost a night's sleep. That's cold. What kind of a person does that?
Ronan: I ought to go check the evidence room. There's bound to be a bottle of something strong that's been confiscated there along the way.
Michael: (Chuckles) It's been a hell of a week. First Paul, now Phyllis. These aren't exactly the bad guys I envisioned getting off the streets when I took this gig.
Ronan: But I do understand where Chris is coming from. What happened to her and Paul...? I don't know that I'd be able to forget about it, either, but the Phyllis that I know would never have--
Michael: I agree, I agree.
Ronan: (Sighs)
Michael: But it's a virtual certainty that she did it. So here I am... stuck between two of my best friends. Is there any way out of this that we can all live with? (Chuckles)
Victor: Well, I'll keep you posted about Phyllis, all right? And since you have not seen your mother or talked to her, I'll, um, I'll just tell her that you thank her for the care package that she sent. All right? Bye-bye, son.
(Cell phone rings)
Sharon: (Sighs)
Sharon: Hi there!
Victor: Hi. So just... missing the sound of your voice. How's New York? How's Noah?
Sharon: Um, New York is great, as usual... (Chuckles) And, um, you know, Noah and I are just sitting here chatting.
Victor: So what does he think about you moving in with me?
Sharon: Actually, I... I haven't brought that up yet.
Victor: I see. Well, anyway, say hello to him. Um, talk to you later.
Sharon: Okay, bye-bye.
(Cell phone rings)
Adam: (Exhales slowly) Hello, Dad.
Victor: I heard you're out of town.
Adam: You heard correctly.
Victor: And, uh, where are you, may I ask?
Adam: I'm in Kansas, Dad. Um, I'm here with Chelsea.
Victor: Are you on the farm?
Adam: No. We are at a bed-and-breakfast in town. I am fully aware that the farm is yours.
Victor: Well, I would never keep you from going to the farm, Son.
Adam: I appreciate that.
Victor: So... what, just you and Chelsea?
Adam: Yes, just the two of us. We are eloping.
Victor: I'll be damned. All right. Okay, Son, nice talking to you.
Phyllis: Hey. Hey. Where are the girls?
Daniel: Um, Lucy's with the sitter, and Nick's got Summer.
Phyllis: Okay. Did--did... did Nick say anything after he came back?
Daniel: I didn't see him. What about you? How long you gonna be in here?
Avery: Well, Phyllis hasn't been arraigned, but we're hoping she'll be granted bail.
Phyllis: And--and then?
Avery: I spoke to Michael and Christine, and they're willing to make a deal. The most you'd do is five years.
Phyllis: No. My God. I can't do--I can't-- I can't--I-I can't do it--
Avery: Okay, Phyllis, I can't predict...
Phyllis: I can't do it. I can't do five years. I can't do that.
Avery: What will happen in a courtroom, but I can guarantee you, if you're convicted, it will be a lot longer of a sentence.
Daniel: No, no, you gotta listen to Avery. I mean, you gotta consider all the factors here before you go making any decisions.
Avery: Yes, you--you have to think about the testimony you'll have to deal with. Michael will make it look like you were plotting to kill Christine, a woman you hated, a woman you considered an ongoing threat to your marriage. He may not be able to put you behind the wheel, but to a jury, he may not have to.
Mrs. Cobb: Just a little tuck here and there, and fix you right up.
Chelsea: (Chuckles) You're a lifesaver, Mrs. Cobb. I really appreciate it. (Sighs) I want to look beautiful for Adam tomorrow. I feel like the luckiest woman in the world, marrying such an incredible guy.
Mrs. Cobb: That handkerchief, did it belong to Hope?
Chelsea: Yeah, Adam, uh, gave it to me as something old.
Mrs. Cobb: He's had his share of ups and downs since his mother died, but I can tell you two are good for each other. I knew Hope, and I believe she'd approve of you.
Chelsea: That means a lot. Thank you.
Victor: Listen, I need some information. Uh, Sharon flew somewhere this evening. Um, check on her credit card activity, all right? No, I want to know exactly where she is. Yep.
Adam: Damn caretaker. Leave the lights on, the door unlocked.
Adam: Hey, Mom. I'm back....this time, for all the right reasons. I, uh... I think I finally found what you... what you wanted for me.
Adam: What are you doing here?
Sharon: This is the place where we were last happy, and now we're so far apart. I still love you, Adam. I want us to both go back in time, to where we were here together, the time you saved the farm, the time that you saw the good in yourself when you had finally changed forever, Adam, when it was us against the world, when there was no Chelsea, no Victor.
Adam: A little late for that. Chelsea and I are engaged. We're getting married tomorrow.
Sharon: No, it's not too late. Call it off.
Adam: You're asking a lot.
Sharon: So--so what if I am? Think about everything that we have shared together, everything that we've meant to each other. We could have it all back.
Adam: If you feel that way, then why are you with my father?
Sharon: Just say the word, that we can be together again, and I will walk away.
Adam: Simple as that, huh?
Sharon: Adam, don't marry Chelsea. You still love me.
Billy: This one is from March of '95. "Police remain baffled about the case in which the car that struck and seriously injured a Genoa City couple was driven by a mystery assailant."
Victoria: You know, the press is gonna dig up all of these old articles.
Billy: (Chuckles) I know. I know. I mean... (Sighs) (Chuckles) I mean, how do I handle this? I mean, this--this doesn't-- just doesn't affect the reality show. As a breaking story, this is huge, and as sensational as it gets.
Victoria: Your stock-in-trade.
Billy: Exactly, so what do I do? I mean, do I give it the full "Restless Style" treatment, or do I cut Phyllis a break?
Phyllis: I-I can't--I can't go to pri--I'm not going to prison. I can't go to pri-- I can't go.
Chris: Then take your chances in front of a jury.
Avery: Given the age of the alleged crime--
Chris: No--no time, no deal.
Michael: Well, obviously, we're not getting anywhere tonight.
Man: Cell's ready.
Ronan: Okay.
Phyllis: I'm--I'm--I'm-- I'm going--I'm going to lockup? I'm going in the cell?
Ronan: Only until your arraignment.
Chris: I'm gonna call Danny tonight, fill him in on what's going on.
Chris: I do not want her on the streets. When we go to the arraignment, I expect you to oppose bail.
Avery: I'm sure Michael will do whatever he can to expedite the arraignment, but it is late, and I don't think we're gonna get into night court, so...
Phyllis: Oh, no, no, my God.
Avery: You might have to spend the night in jail.
Phyllis: No, no, I can't do that. I can't.
Daniel: Mom, Mom, hey, it's okay. You're gonna get through this.
Avery: Listen to me. Listen to me. Mouth closed, okay? You don't talk to anyone unless I'm there. If you start talking, I can't help you. So anyone tries to push, you tell them you're represented. If they don't back down, you ask for me, any time of night.
Phyllis: Okay.
Avery: I'm gonna try to get this over with as quickly as possible.
Billy: Hello. So what'd the higher-ups say?
Marianne: We all have serious concerns about moving forward while one of your key team members is being prosecuted. I-if it were a civil matter, that would be one thing, but attempted murder, it's--
Billy: Fair enough.
Victoria: Uh, so what does that mean in terms of the show?
Marianne: It's on hold.
Billy: (Sighs)
Victoria: Okay. For how long?
Marianne: We'll need time to rethink things, see where this case against Phyllis goes before we make any final decisions.
Billy: There's no need to wait. I'm going to pull Phyllis' name from the masthead, as well as her editor's letter. Instead, we're going to put her on the front cover and we're gonna run the story about her past crimes coming to haunt her as the series pilot.
Daniel: (Exhales slowly)
Heather: How are you doing?
Daniel: (Chuckles) It's a little, um, it's a little strange. It's normally me in there and Mom out here.
Heather: Yeah, I know what you mean. I never thought I'd see Paul behind bars.
Daniel: Neither did I.
Heather: How's Lucy?
Daniel: She's good. Talked to the sitter. She's down for the night.
Heather: Maybe it's time that we, uh, launched that support group you and I talked about. What was it? Adult children with parents in jail.
Daniel: (Laughs) Well, we could have our inaugural meeting at Jimmy's. I know that I could really use a drink.
Heather: (Chuckles) What are we waiting for?
Michael: I am not going to oppose bail.
Chris: Michael, I am asking you, you've seen--
Michael: No, Christine, no. I am not gonna stand in front of a judge and destroy my credibility. The crime happened a long time ago. Phyllis has children, family, friends, a job. She's not gonna flee, and there's no indication that she's dangerous.
Chris: Maybe not to you.
Ronan: All right. Chris, you told me not to make this personal, right? I think it's really time for you to take some of your own advice here. If this were anyone else, under these circumstances, you know that you would not request or demand.
Phyllis: This is a mistake.
Paul: You know, Phyllis, you have gotten away with so much for so long. Why don't you just say you did it and get it over with?
Phyllis: I have nothing to say to you.
Paul: Yeah. If anybody deserves their karma to come back and bite them in the ass, it's you. You did what you did, and I did what I did. Now it's time we pay for it.
Ronan: I'm gonna escort her from here.
Man: (Clears throat)
Phyllis: Thank you. Thank you.
Ronan: As a friend, take this deal.
Phyllis: What, prison? No.
Ronan: Phyllis, listen to me. I'm telling you to take this--
Phyllis: No. No, no, no. I've been to prison. I've been there. I will never survive it. I--
Ronan: I don't think you have a choice about this. Listen to me. This is serious. Christine's going to come at you with everything she's got. Oh, come on, Phyllis, you're foolish to think that you're going to get away with this. It's not going away. It's not.
Chelsea: By this time tomorrow, I will be Mrs. Adam Newman.
Adam: I do love you. There's a part of me that always will. But I love Chelsea more.
Sharon: Adam... you--you can't mean that.
Adam: She's my best friend. She gets me in ways no one else ever has. No one. Bananas foster, crawfish étouffée, New Orleans-- that was just, um... a fantasy world that-- that we created, our own little world. But this... this is real, and at times, it's--it's hard, it's gritty, it's nasty, and Chelsea gets that. She--she understands it. She's okay with it. She's more than okay with it, which makes me okay with it. (Sighs) You have no idea how freeing it feels to... feel comfortable with yourself and with the person that you're with. No worries about what might come from your past. Chelsea and I know where we've been, and we know where we're going, which is why, tomorrow, I'm gonna marry Chelsea.
(Cell phone rings)
Victor: What'd you find out? She flew to Kansas? You're sure? All right, thank you.
(Footsteps approach)
Nick: Did you get ahold of Noah?
Victor: Yeah.
Nick: How is he?
Victor: (Exhales slowly) He's worried, Son.
Nick: I am, too. I never knew Phyllis was capable of something like this.
Victor: You'd be amazed what people are capable of when pushed.
Nick: I'm not just talking about the hit-and-run.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Nick: All these years that Phyllis and I have known each other, she's kept this from me. We've said, no more secrets, no more lies.
Victor: Yeah. (Slams glass down) (Exhales slowly) Let me give you a piece of advice, my boy. Don't you ever let a woman make a fool out of you.
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Victor: How was your trip to New York?
Avery: Daniel, are you telling me that you think your mother is guilty?
Chelsea: Did you just call off the wedding?
