Episode # 9876 ~ Nikki & Ashley Try to Stop Jack's Surgery

Neil: (Clears throat)
Kay: Neil, um... thank you so much for coming by.
Neil: No problem. Um, Katherine, if this is about Devon, I am sure he will contact you about his progress when and if he's ready.
Kay: Well, um, of course I'm concerned about his recovery. I mean, the mere fact that, uh, he may hear again-- not only that, he will hear better-- I, uh, I want that very much for him. But, um... that is not why I asked you to come by.
Neil: All right. So why did you ask me to come by?
Kay: Because this may be our last chance for you and I to make things right.
(Knock on door)
Victor: Come in.
Michael: Victor.
Victor: Have a seat, old boy. I'm trying to figure out how much it would cost me to buy Beauty of Nature.
Michael: Hmm. And?
Victor: A lot.
Michael: (Chuckles) I have some new news on that topic. Victoria is indeed on the move, as well. (Sighs) Your daughter officially wants Beauty of Nature as much as you do.
Victor: Really?
Victoria: Yeah, uh, let me know how quickly I can sell. Yeah, all of it. Enough to have enough cash on hand.
(Call-waiting beeps)
Victoria: That's my other line. Call me back when you have the numbers. Hello.
Sofia: Victoria, its Sofia winters. Do you have time to meet today?
Victoria: Yeah, yeah, I do. Um, would you like me to come by your offices?
Sofia: If we just accidentally run into each other, that'd be better. The G.C.A.C. dining room in about an hour?
Victoria: Um, that's a little quirky, but... sure, yeah. See you then.
Sofia: I'm good to go.
Tucker: That's my girl.
Ashley: Hi.
Nikki: Ashley, do you know about this surgery Jack is considering?
Ashley: What surgery?
Nikki: Oh, it's insane. It's experimental. It's very dangerous. It's only for the most desperate cases.
Ashley: Well, did Jack's doctor tell him it was his only hope?
Nikki: That's the thing. His medical team feels that there is a slight chance that he could walk again with a lot of hard work and physical therapy, but if he has this surgery and it doesn't work, that's it. He'll never walk again. Ashley, you've gotta help me stop Jack before he goes too far.
Jack: Well, you meant it.
Genevieve: Yes, of course. I am ready to sell you Beauty of Nature, and I've got the papers to make it happen.
Jack: So we sign this, shake hands, and all is well?
Genevieve: I'd like that very much, but actually, first, we should discuss the conditions of the transfer.
Jack: I thought we had already done that. You said before that you wanted another chance with me. You have a more practical requirement? An interest in the company?
Genevieve: No, Jack. Beauty of Nature will be yours entirely. I don't have any need to retain any piece of it. Besides, practicality was never my strong suit.
Jack: Then what do you want?
Genevieve: I want you to marry me.
Michael: Per your instructions, I've been tracking Victoria's financial maneuvers. She's going for all-out liquidity, selling off a sizable number of stocks and holdings, as if she's in need of a great deal of cash in order to buy something very large... such as Beauty of Nature.
Victor: She's being utterly ridiculous, as if... Beauty of Nature belonged to her, as if she had built it. She wouldn't be anywhere near that damn company if it hadn't been for me.
Michael: I assume you intend to fight her on this?
Ashley: I don't understand. Why is this surgery even an option if the risks are so high?
Nikki: It's for people who have nothing to lose.
Ashley: But that's not Jack.
Nikki: No, but... (Sighs) He thinks if he can't walk, he has nothing, and the risk he is willing to go to-- they would have to remove the bullet from his spinal column and then have stem cells repair the nerves, but if he has this surgery and it doesn't work, it--it-- there's no "Back to square one." That's it. He will never walk again. There is no prayer of him walking again.
Ashley: And that's Jack. He wants what he wants, and he wants it now. To hell with the consequences.
Nikki: Oh, well, and you can't tell him he's wrong. Sarge was very unhappy to hear this, and he made his feelings abundantly clear.
Ashley: I mean, obviously, we both know what Jack is going through is awful. He feels like his body is out of his control, his life is out of his control, and everything he wants is out of reach, but this surgery is not the answer.
Nikki: No.
Ashley: We have to convince him, Nikki, that risking big does not necessarily mean winning big.
Jack: You want me to marry you to get Beauty of Nature?
Genevieve: (Sighs) When I said that I wanted a second chance with you, I didn't mean as buddies. I care about you. That never changed.
Jack: Well, that's a cozy threesome-- you, me... and this chair.
Genevieve: I know you're in a chair now, and I know you want out almost as badly as you want Beauty of Nature, but I'd like to think that I could help you with both of these things.
Jack: Please tell me this is not an act of kindness on your part.
Genevieve: No! Oh, no. This is really selfish. I mean, most people who screw up as badly as I did don't get a second chance. I'm trying to create a second chance for myself-- whatever it takes to get back to the way things should have been.
Jack: Don't you think maybe that's a little unrealistic?
Genevieve: I don't know until I try, but I have got to try... even though it scares me.
Jack: (Chuckles) The iron lady, afraid?
Genevieve: Yeah, and don't spread that one around, okay? But, yes, I have my fears. I have my doubts. I don't know if I got this one in me-- a normal relationship. I mean, if you look at my life with Colin as an example... (Laughs)
Jack: Yes, I guess that would give anyone pause.
Genevieve: Maybe that's why I bought Beauty of Nature... to begin with. You know, it's like a way to invest with-- without investing, kind of like the perfect marriage, if you know what I mean. I mean, a corporation isn't gonna get angry with me, isn't gonna get disappointed. I mean, it doesn't get to try to control me. A corporation can't hurt me.
Jack: In case you hadn't noticed, I wasn't going to, either.
Genevieve: I noticed, believe me. I should have trusted that. Really, I should have. I wanted to. I still do.
Jack: And now you're ready to go all in. Is that it?
Genevieve: You made me happy. After Samantha died, I never... I-I-it surprised me. (Chuckles) It really did. I-I never thought that I would ever feel like that again. And I liked being free... and letting my guard down. Oh, God, I am so tired of pretending... so tired. I know that I told you that I needed to be my own person. I was, when I was with you, and I wish that I could have realized that before--
Jack: Before you dumped me.
Genevieve: Beauty of Nature should have been my wedding gift to you all along. Let's let that happen now. Let's both take a chance and have everything that we should have had.
Victoria: (Sighs) No.
Victor: I haven't said anything.
Victoria: No, but we both know that this is about Beauty of Nature, and we have nothing to discuss.
Victor: I beg to differ.
Tucker: Well... (sighs) So far, so good. We've set the stage. A select few already believe that you and I are having some serious problems.
Sofia: Well, after you lit into me in front of Neil, Harmony, and Devon, that was pretty convincing. I know Neil bought it.
Tucker: Are you okay with that?
Sofia: Fooling my husband is not the best feeling. You know, after not telling him about Moses right away-- brings up a lot of memories about, you know, keeping things from him.
Tucker: Well, today is gonna be even rougher when we put on a show for Victoria.
Sofia: She and Neil have a solid bond. If she has any questions about today, he'd tell her our issues didn't just come from out of nowhere.
Tucker: Genevieve is off her game right now. This is the time to move in. We position you properly with Victoria, and I can work to get Beauty of Nature down the road.
Sofia: (Chuckles) Oh, you really want this one badly.
Tucker: I do. But... (Sighs) In order to make it happen, as much as I love you, everyone has to believe that you and I are on the rocks.
Sofia: (Sighs)
Kay: Please, please.
Neil: Thank you. (Clears throat)
Kay: All right. Now my executive search committee have interviewed, vetted, all but patted down possible C.E.O. executives, and, um, they've narrowed down-- they've narrowed it down. Thank God. Uh, it couldn't be too soon. I'm saying, Neil, as happy as I am steering the company ship, I'm not at all interested in running Chancellor long-term.
Neil: I'm sure you have some very viable possibilities.
Kay: Oh, yeah, they were excellent, actually.
Neil: So who will you choose?
Kay: Uh, I don't want any of them. I want you back in your office. I mean, you are the C.E.O. that Chancellor deserves.
Neil: Katherine, you know how much I respect you, and I-I appreciate the offer.
Kay: Wait--wait-- wait a minute. Wait j-just--just a moment. You loved being C.E.O. of Chancellor. Uh, we both know it. I mean, more power, more autonomy than-- than Victor ever gave you at Newman. You and I, we-- we were a team, and a damn good team, while it lasted.
Neil: Yes... we were.
Kay: Look, I, uh... (Laughs) I'm not gonna beg you anymore. I, uh, I am sincerely sorry I handled things the way I did when I learned that Devon was my grandson, but that time has passed. All we have to do is move on, and this is such a good time to do it.
Neil: So just... start working together again, even though we've had this huge problem. Just... put that all behind us.
Kay: Neil, look, I-I'm... I'm begging you. I'm--I'm--I'm taking my last shot before I break down and bring in a new C.E.O., but please, God, please tell me that you will think it over. Just give me the word.
Neil: (Sighs) Hey, um, yeah, well... mm. All right.
Kay: You--you'll think it over, right? (Stammers) (Chuckles) Well, that's good.
Neil: No, I'm not gonna think it over. (Clasps hands together) I'm coming back. Period.
Jack: You know, marriage isn't the only way to set this right. We both know my case against you is very strong. I could win Beauty of Nature in a courtroom, just by proving you should never have had it in the first place.
Genevieve: If you go through the legal system, that could take years. You know, or you could have what you want right now. We both could. You know, when we were falling in love, we had some talks about how neither one of us plays by the rules. I think this one's crazy enough to fall into that category. Come on, Jack. Take this leap with me.
Ashley: Jack, where are you?
Jack: Uh, here, in here.
Ashley: What the hell are you doing here?
Genevieve: I'm happy to tell her, or, you know, you could do the honors.
Kay: You say you will come back to Chancellor?
Neil: How soon do you want me?
Kay: I, uh, you know, don't mess with my head, Neil. Or so help me, I'll-- (Laughs)
Neil: Katherine, no games. I would never, ever do that to you.
Kay: All right, well, how can you say you don't need time to think?
Neil: Because... I have been thinking for quite some time, truly, ever since Christmas. In fact, when you brought Ana back to see Devon and Harmony, that meant a lot to them, which meant an awful lot to me. It made me realize that you weren't doing it for yourself.
Kay: Yeah, but, Neil... I, uh, I came to you in January about Chancellor, and you turned me down.
Neil: That's because I've had time to get past what happened with Devon. You gave me room to do that. I know it wasn't easy, Katherine. I appreciate the effort that took.
Kay: When do I want you to start? Uh, yesterday. My God, we have so much to do.
Neil: I want to be the one to tell Devon and Lily about this, okay?
Kay: And your wife.
Neil: True enough. Strange, but Sofia was telling me a while back that I belong at Chancellor.
Kay: Smart woman. Next time, listen.
Sofia: We should go, make sure we're ready for Victoria.
Tucker: Just, uh, tell me one more time, are you sure you're up for this?
Sofia: This is your best shot at Beauty of Nature, so let's do this.
Tucker: This is gonna be a lot more public and a lot uglier than that fake fight we had at Devon's studio.
Sofia: Oh, please. You're the one who's gonna need pads and a helmet.
Tucker: Oh, yeah?
Sofia: Yeah. I got a lot of stored-up ammo and attitude. You know, you're not the easiest guy to work with.
Tucker: Well, I guess you told me.
Sofia: I didn't, but I will.
Victor: Beauty of Nature should never have been taken from Newman, all right? You and I both know it. And you pursuing that company means you're interfering in something that's none of your business. You're trying to punish me for the appearance of Chelsea and her mother.
Victoria: It's a business decision that makes fiscal sense. I have plenty of capital, and I want to invest it in a viable venture.
Victor: Capital you took from me.
Victoria: I won from you in court.
Victor: Beauty of Nature belongs with Newman.
Victoria: Well, then buy it, if you can.
Victor: (Sighs) You're my daughter, and you know that I love you, but I will not walk away from this, which means you will lose.
Jack: Ash, could you just give us one more minute?
Ashley: Okay, I'll go get a cup of coffee.
Jack: Yeah, there's some already started in the kitchen.
Genevieve: I am reaching out to you, Jack, taking a chance. I'm just trying to right a terrible wrong for both of our sakes.
Jack: I think it's important that we not share any part of this with anyone right now, until we know where it's going.
Genevieve: Yeah, the word "Marriage" can be so fraught. You're right. It should just be between the two of us. Okay. (Sighs) These are new.
Jack: Yeah, those are from Nikki.
Genevieve: How thoughtful of her.
Jack: That's Nikki.
Genevieve: (Chuckles) Please give me your answer soon.
Ashley: Why? Why would you even let her in the door?
Jack: For the chance to get Beauty of Nature, my door is wide-open.
Ashley: Oh, come on. She's just handing it over to you? She's that afraid of a lawsuit?
Jack: I'm not sure she's afraid of anything.
Victoria: Newman Enterprises is traded on Wall Street now. You're no longer lord and master, so if you want to make a huge cash outlay to buy back Beauty of Nature, you're gonna have to convince the board of directors. Its red tape-- takes time. It's enough time for me to make my move.
Victor: Another result of the lawsuit you brought against me. I paid you and your brother and your sister a billion and a half dollars-- $1.5 billion! That forced me to take Newman public, and I forgave you. I forgave your brother. I took you back into the company.
Victoria: I'm not there anymore, Dad.
Victor: You left of your own accord, Victoria.
Victor: Is that how you thank me? Is that how you treat the company that made you what you are?
Victoria: You're not a victim. Everything that I learned in business, I learned from watching you.
Victor: Don't you challenge me. I hope you watched closely enough to know that I never lose at my own game. You're now playing a very dangerous game, my dear.
Nikki: Oh, Genevieve.
Genevieve: Nikki, uh, I'm glad we ran into each other. I was hoping to have the chance to clear the air about that photograph.
Nikki: Photograph, photograph... oh, ohh, you mean the picture of you and Victor in Japan. It wasn't your best side.
Genevieve: I'm sure that Victor told you that it wasn't anything like what it might have looked like. I respect Victor as a business opponent, nothing more.
Nikki: Oh, I'm sure that is exactly how you view him, as an opponent, a peer, at the same level, but with Victor, I imagine it's more like a lion playing with its dinner.
Genevieve: (Laughs)
Nikki: (Chuckles)
Genevieve: Well, I will admit that there is an element of play to our exchanges. How does Victor put it? "If there's no pleasure in business, you're doing it wrong." But clearly, both Victor and I are doing it right.
Nikki: Oh, I'm sure you're a pro.
Genevieve: Lovely flowers you sent Jack. A little unsophisticated color, but, oh, well.
Nikki: You were at Jack's this morning?
Ashley: Genevieve is a liar who betrayed you while she was picking out her bridal bouquet and her wedding music. For you to trust anything that comes out of that woman's mouth, whether it's business or anything else, just does not make any sense to me.
Jack: What does trust have to do with any of it?
Ashley: Okay, so you realize that she's probably just peddling Beauty of Nature to you, right? And if she's doing that, then she's probably peddling it to Victor and who knows who else. Jackie, she's probably using you to start a bidding war.
Jack: Yeah, that's a possibility.
Ashley: And what's the other possibility? Oh, come on. If you know something, just tell me, please?
Jack: If you want to talk about trust, I need you to trust me to do the right thing, to do what I need to do, and soon, I will be running not just Jabot, but Beauty of Nature.
Ashley: So you want me just to let this go?
Jack: Yes, I'd like you to forget about all of it, if you can. I don't want anyone to know about this, including Tucker.
Ashley: Do you have any idea at all how rash and impulsive this sounds? I mean, all of a sudden, you're positive-- you're positive that Beauty of Nature is yours and that this is a sure thing, only it's not, and neither-- and neither is that surgery you're considering.
Jack: Who told you about that?
Ashley: Listen. Nikki did. And she was right, too, because I looked into the procedure, and, Jack, it's a last resort kind of surgery. It's very high-risk. It's not for someone like you.
Jack: I can't walk, Ash. It is for someone exactly like me.
Ashley: Jackie, but wait a second. What if something happened to you? What--what? What then?
Jack: I have been given two giant opportunities in the last 24 hours, and I am taking them both, and no one-- not you, not Nikki, not Genevieve-- is gonna talk me out of it. No one is gonna keep me in this chair or keep me from what I want!
Ashley: I know you want to walk-- now. I know you want to run the-- the biggest cosmetics empire in the world-- now. But, Jackie, come on. It's just not that easy.
Jack: No, there's nothing "Easy" about this. Ash, I'm asking a surgeon to cut my body open and dig a bullet out of my spine! There'll be lots of blood and hopefully, lots of pain, 'cause if there's pain, it worked! So God willing, I will hurt like hell! No, there's nothing easy about this. Ash, I'm not some headstrong kid who doesn't know the odds. I know the odds all too well. But it's my decision, and I'm willing to take the gamble.
Ashley: (Voice cracking) Jackie, I hear you. (Sniffles) Do you hear me at all?
Jack: I think you should go back to Jabot.
Ashley: (Sighs) Oh, Jack. (Sighs) (Sniffles)
Jack: (Sobs quietly)
Genevieve: And if I were at Jack's this morning...
Nikki: "If"? Oh, how very coy.
Genevieve: It would be between Jack and me-- personal, private. I hope you can understand that and respect it.
Nikki: Genevieve, my respect for you runs as deep as a... teaspoon.
Victor: What have you found?
Michael: Well, regarding the need for board approval for Newman to buy Beauty of Nature, there is no way around it. Eh... and as far as you wanting to purchase Beauty of Nature privately, Victor, you do not currently have the liquidity that you once did because of the lawsuit. You would put your assets at significant risk, and that makes me very nervous.
Victor: Beauty of Nature is mine. I will get it back.
Sofia: (Loudly) And I am telling you, that project was solid.
Tucker: (Loudly) Oh, really? If it was that important to you, why didn't you stay on it?
Sofia: I was on maternity leave.
Tucker: Mm-hmm. What was McCall, Unlimited, supposed to do? Just sit in limbo until you were ready to come back?
Sofia: One project, Tucker, one. That's just another sign of disrespect from you to me.
Tucker: We're not partners. You work for me.
Sofia: (Raises voice) Oh, don't me get loud up in here! You think you can talk to me any kind of way you want?
Tucker: Hey, hey, hey, hey. (Firmly) Keep your voice down.
Sofia: (Lowers voice) I have had your back for years.
Tucker: (Normal voice) Oh, no, no, no. We're not having that conversation.
Sofia: Oh, yes, we are. Say what you have to, because I plan to.
Tucker: All right. You have overstepped more than once. I've humored you for your father's sake, but I'm not gonna do it anymore.
Sofia: Overstepped? For fighting for things that I believe in?
Tucker: McCall is mine. If you want a vote, maybe it's not the place for you.
Sofia: Well, what is that supposed to mean?
Tucker: What do you think it means? You're fired.
Sofia: Well, don't bother. I quit!
Tucker: Good-- saves me the severance pay.
(Walks out)
Sofia: (Sighs)
Victoria: Um... (Sighs) Are you okay?
Sofia: (Sighs shakily) I don't know. Did I just lose my job?
Victoria: I think you might have.
Sofia: (Sighs) I went from being Tucker's friend to some lackey he just yells at in public.
Victoria: (Sighs)
Sofia: You know, he did it in front of Neil and Devon, too?
Victoria: Well, maybe you just need some time to cool off.
Sofia: No. I am so sick of his "Big man, I know everything" routine. He's just afraid to admit that I know a thing or two myself now.
Victoria: (Clears throat)
Sofia: (Sighs) You know, I knew it was time, and that's why I called you. Of course, it was just to, you know, feel things out, but then... Tucker shows up, and, well, you see how well that went.
Victoria: You wanted to feel me out... about what?
Sofia: Working at Beauty of Nature... if I decided to leave McCall. (Sighs) So here I am! (Chuckles) Available, knowledgeable, and asking you for a job.
Victoria: Listen, what Tucker just pulled-- firing you in public, uh, seriously, I thought my father was the only one that was capable of something like that. But everyone knows your reputation, and this is not gonna affect your career.
Sofia: Well, when a door closes and all that, I was hoping maybe a window could be Beauty of Nature. I mean, couldn't you talk to Genevieve? Um, I-I'm ready to go.
Victoria: (Sighs) Listen, Sofia, um, Beauty of Nature, uh, things are in flux right now.
Sofia: Well, couldn't I just get a meeting with her?
Victoria: Just take your time. You know, look around. See what else is out there, and I'll get back to you.
(Cell phone alert chimes)
Victoria: Oh, I'm sorry. I actually-- I have to deal with this. You're gonna land on your feet, okay? I know it.
Neil: Hey.
Sofia: Hey.
Neil: So... you and Tucker split? What's going on?
Sofia: Um...
Tucker: Ashley, you got a second? There's something we need to talk about. What's wrong, Baby?
Ashley: Oh, it's my brother. He's so desperate to prove that he's in charge of his life. (Sighs) Who cares how dangerous the surgery is, as long as he can get up and walk and take control of Beauty of Nature? I mean, who cares how big the risks are?
Tucker: You-- wait, Beauty of Nature's in play again?
Ashley: Yes, Beauty of Nature's in play again. Honey, I'm telling you this as your wife, okay? This wasn't a business tip. Can we please focus on my brother? I'm worried about him, and... not Beauty of Nature?
Nikki: Why you find it so amusing to engage with Genevieve Atkinson I will not understand. (Sighs)
Victor: I explained that photograph already.
Nikki: Yes, yes, and I understand her whole game. But now she's moved it over to Jack, and the last thing he needed this morning was to be badgered by her.
Victor: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. She came to see Jack Abbott?
(Cell phone rings) (Ring)
Genevieve: Hello?
Jack: Yes.
Genevieve: I'm sorry?
Jack: (Inhales deeply) Yes. Yes, I will marry you.
Genevieve: (Chuckles)
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Victoria: I am ready to make you a firm offer for Beauty of Nature.
Victor: Jack Abbott would sleep with the devil if he thought it would help him to best me.
Ashley: It's not like your empire's gonna completely collapse.
Tucker: This is starting to feel like some kind of test.
