Episode # 9864 ~ Lauren & Tucker's Comments Shock Sharon

Sharon: Morning. Can I come in?

Victor: Well, you're bright and early.

Sharon: Well, my mind was racing. I, um, I found, um, this group of botanists online who have made some incredible new discoveries in the field of antiaging, and I-I've also started coming up with some new names for the line.

Victor: You better hold off with that, okay? Because since Newman went public, we need the approval of the board of directors on any major decision.

Sharon: You mean like for coming up with a whole new line.

Victor: Exactly.

Sharon: Well, I can hardly wait, and, um, just by the way, I find it very auspicious that the line is being born today, don't you?

Victor: Well, I'm not a superstitious man, but in this case, you may be right.

Nikki: I trust you all realize what day this is.

Abby: It's Daddy's birthday. I have a present I'm going to drop off later.

Victoria: Mm. Well, um, I sent him a card, and I made sure that Reed sent him one, too.

Nick: And the girls and I were planning on stopping by the house later for some cake and ice cream. Right now, I gotta get to the office. I have a meeting.

Nikki: Hold it. No, no, no, no. I have arranged for a small birthday luncheon at the club this afternoon,

Victoria: (Groans)

Nikki: And I expect you all to be there.

Victoria: Mom, no.

Abby: Yeah, I can't.

Nikki: I'm not taking no for an answer, so sorry.

Victoria: (Sighs)

Abby: Celebrating with Dad-- that'll be... interesting.

Nikki: Look, I realize that you all have some issues with him.

Nick: Just a few.

Nikki: I'm not thrilled with him myself these days, to tell you the truth, but there is no reason why we can't set our differences aside and sit down and have a meal with your father on his birthday!

(Knock on door)

Adam: Yes?

Chelsea: Hi. It's Chelsea. You busy?

Adam: What's up?

Chelsea: Well, I was early for a class at the gym, so I thought I'd stop by and see if you were here, and since you are, I take it you didn't spend the night in jail. Did you get arrested?

Adam: (Chuckles) Um, no. That was a colossal waste of time. Speaking of which, I don't want to waste your time. You gotta get to class, so...

Chelsea: No, it's okay. I have time. Sure you don't need anything?

Adam: Um... no, I'm-- thank you, I'm good. Uh, have a good day, I guess.

Chelsea: Oh, wait, wait, wait. What's that?

Adam: Um, what is what?

Chelsea: There's a-- a big envelope on the floor. Looks like it was slid under the door.

Adam: May I have that, please?

Genevieve: You never returned my call. (Chuckles) I thought it might be a little harder to ignore me in person.

Victor: Not necessarily.

Genevieve: You know, now that, uh, Beauty of Nature is no longer owned by Newman, I'm free to pursue Mitsukoshi on my own, and see if I can get them to continue our exclusive arrangement in Japan.

Victor: Why are you telling me this?

Genevieve: Well, because I understand that you know the secret to getting that contract.

Victor: (Sighs) You know, Genevieve, I offered to help you with Beauty of Nature. You turned me down.

Genevieve: But, Victor, your idea of helping me was owning the company again and using me as your employee. Now I'm coming to you as a friend, and I hope that we still are, for just, you know, a little bit of advice on a particular deal. I mean, after all, we're not competitors. You're not even in the cosmetics business now.

Victor: I can't be of any assistance to you. You have a nice day.

(Cell phone alert chimes)

Tucker: Man, we ought to put it in the bylaws-- no more emergency meetings unless there really is an emergency.

Lauren: Yeah, really. I mean, I just flew in last night, literally, as the packet was being delivered, close to midnight. I mean, there are so many things that I need to be doing this morning.

Tucker: So who's in favor of this new boondoggle of Victor's?

Davis: Not me. Does Newman really need another natural cosmetics line after just selling off Beauty of Nature?

Bob: Well, that wasn't Victor's plan.

Lauren: He put Adam in charge. And I mean, to this day, I will never understand what Victor was thinking.

Tucker: Well, now he wants to undo what Adam did. Good luck with that.

Lauren: Even if we did green light this, which I'm not in favor of, Sharon Newman is the last person I would want heading this.

Bob: What are her qualifications?

Davis: Exactly.

Tucker: Gossip rags are gonna love this. (Sighs) Sharon and scandal pretty much go hand in hand these days.

Lauren: Oh, great, great. That's just what Newman needs-- more bad press.

Genevieve: Victor, you must know that Jabot will pursue this contract with a vengeance. Are you willing to just sit by and watch your dear old friend Jack triumph over a company that you built?

Victor: (Chuckles) That is not gonna happen.

Genevieve: (Inhales quickly)

(Footsteps approach)

Sharon: Excuse me, I didn't mean to interrupt.

Victor: That's all right. Genevieve and I are just finished.

Genevieve: Bientot, then, Victor.

Victor: Good-bye.

Sharon: Um...

Victor: What's the matter?

Sharon: I was, uh, going to the guest office, and I-I heard some of the board members talking. It was--it was very upsetting.

Victor: What'd they say?

Sharon: That they're not supportive of all of this line, and they don't want me to have anything to do with it. Victor, maybe I should just resign now.

Victor: That's ridiculous. You're not gonna resign, all right? I will talk to them. Um, I have to prepare for the meeting.

Sharon: You know where to find me.

Genevieve: Hey, sorry, couldn't help but overhear that you were having a little problem with your board of directors.

Victor: That's none of your business, Genevieve.

Genevieve: Well, yes, you would be right, except that, um, Davis Holloway works for F.M.N., and I am F.M.N., and I could advise him about how to vote, and he would listen to me. I-I-I'm just saying that, uh, perhaps I can help you with your situation, if you would be willing to help me with mine.

Adam: None of this is in Braille anywhere. Who is this from?

Chelsea: Um, Newman Enterprises.

Adam: Can you tell me what it says?

Chelsea: Sure. Um, the cover letter says, "You are hereby notified that the board of directors of Newman Enterprises will convene tomorrow morning." (Sighs) This--this is dated yesterday.

Adam: (Scoffs) When will they convene?

Chelsea: Like, right now.

Adam: Great.

Chelsea: (Sighs)

Adam: Nice, Dad. Very good. You write the letter so the lawyers don't bark, but you make sure that I can't see it. Um, what else does it say? You know, is there anything in there?

Chelsea: Um, it-- it looks like a prospectus.

Adam: A prospectus for what?

Chelsea: For a new organic cosmetics line.

Adam: Okay, we gotta get out of here.

Chelsea: We?

Adam: Yes. Uh, I'm gonna have my driver take me over there and I want you to come with me, so you can read this whole thing to me.

Chelsea: Okay.

Adam: Um, yeah, he can bring you back so that you're back in time for your class, but, uh, we--we gotta go.

Chelsea: Okay.

Victor: Thank you all for coming on such short notice. The first order of business-- I'd like to welcome back my son Nicholas, who will reassume his seat at this board table, effective immediately. As for Victoria, she's taken a senior management position with the new owner of Beauty of Nature. Therefore, I suggest that she be recessed until we have clarified some potential conflict of interest issues. Meanwhile, I hope you had a chance to take a look at my proposal to launch a new cosmetics line, organic cosmetics line, okay?

Lauren: You know, Davis had a good point, before you arrived. You had a natural line with Beauty of Nature and elected to sell it.

Victor: This is a growing sector. We have a chance to take everything we have learned and improve upon it.

Tucker: Well, I was hoping the entire cosmetics division would be scrapped, but under your proposal, once again, Newman would be saddled with a single consumer products division, consisting of a single product line. It's a start-up, at that. My question is, why? How does this make sense?

Bob: Your strengths are technology, manufacturing, real estate. Cosmetics-- it's not a good fit.

Lauren: Beauty of Nature was Victoria's pet project. You did a great job developing it. You made a handsome profit when you sold it, despite it being out of sync with the rest of Newman, not because of it. You know, I think I'm with Bob and Davis and Tucker. I... (Scoffs) Why go back to the well?

Tucker: Unless it's personal.

Victor: We have existing supply chains. We have factories. We have distribution centers. We have sales personnel in place. In fact, we have an existing and functioning infrastructure. Why the hell not take advantage of that?

Tucker: I am opposed to committing significant resources to something this speculative. I think it would be far more prudent for you to focus on your core businesses.

Victor: And let me tell you something-- Newman Cosmetics is a core business. Beauty of Nature was immensely profitable last year. It's a strong and viable enterprise.

Lauren: Personally, I think your time and money is better invested elsewhere.

Victor: All right. I appreciate your opinion, but I disagree with you, and I have the feeling that I'm not the only one.

Nikki: (Sighs) Oh.

Nikki: Excuse me. What are you doing at the bar in your condition?

Chelsea: I'm getting lemon slices to put in my water bottle for my prenatal yoga class, not that it's any of your concern.

Nikki: Actually, that baby you're carrying is very much my concern, because if all goes well, he's going to be my grandson.

Chelsea: Did you seriously think I was getting a drink? Why would you even go there? What is wrong with you?

Nikki: I'll be watching you.

Chelsea: Yeah, you do that.

Victoria: So I'm sorry, I really don't have much time. I have to get to my father's birthday lunch at the club.

Genevieve: Oh, I wish I'd known that earlier. I would have wished him a happy birthday when I saw him at his office.

Victoria: You went to my father.

Genevieve: Y-yes. I know that's not what you wanted me to do.

Victoria: But you did it anyway.

Genevieve: Yes, and it's a good thing I did, because he gave me the key to hanging on to our exclusive deal with Mitsukoshi. He also told me everything I needed to know to ace out Jabot. (Laughs) You know, so, um... actually, I am going to fly to Japan later, and I'm going to put his advice into action.

Victoria: You're going there today.

Genevieve: Mm-hmm.

Victoria: You know, that's the worst possible idea.

Genevieve: Why?

Victoria: You have absolutely no idea what you're messing with here. My father could be steering you over a cliff right now out of pure spite.

Genevieve: (Sighs)

Victoria: Maybe you think I'm being paranoid, but I have seen him in action way too many times, okay? So we need to verify exactly what he said to you before you even think about going to meet with Mitsukoshi.

Genevieve: I'm going...

Victoria: Otherwise--

Genevieve: And that's that. There's only one little snag. I had another trip planned to meet with our ad agency. I'm going to need you to cover for me for that.

Victoria: I'm not sure that's possible.

Victor: Now Sharon has plenty of corporate experience, both at Jabot and Beauty of Nature, okay?

Tucker: As a model and spokesperson, neither of which qualifies her to manage a business.

Lauren: Hmm. Davis, what do you think? You've barely said two words.

Davis: I'm evaluating.

Nick: In answer to Tucker's concerns about Sharon, she'll be working very closely with handpicked, seasoned executives and R & D people. She'll also be answering directly to Dad. And another thing-- we're not proposing anything radical. We know cosmetics. Under the Newman umbrella, Beauty of Nature turned into one of the biggest players in the industry, without any adverse effects on our other divisions.

Adam: Sorry I'm late, but I'm glad I'm not too late. I wouldn't want to miss an opportunity to weigh in on this matter.

Nick: You mean, you didn't want to miss an opportunity to ruin Dad's plans.

Adam: On the contrary. I agree with them 100%.

Nick: You support a new cosmetics line-- the person who sold the last one.

Adam: That's right.

Victor: Son, what are you up to?

Victoria: Where are we putting gifts?

Nikki: Oh, here, just right on this table, Honey.

Victoria: Great.

Abby: I'm glad that you're early, so we can catch up. How's the new job?

Victoria: Well, I'm feeling a bit stymied at the moment.

Nikki: Oh, why?

Victoria: Well, Genevieve wants me to cover this out-of-town meeting, and I'm not really sure it's the best idea.

Adam: This is Adam Newman. I'm not available, so please leave a message.

Chelsea: Adam, its Chelsea. I, um... I just wanted to make sure you got to your meeting on time, so... let me know how it went, okay?

Adam: There's nothing disingenuous about this. I support the idea. I think it's a solid one.

Nick: Then why did you let go of Beauty of Nature in the first place? We could have run with that instead of trying to re-create its success.

Adam: You're right, we could have, and we should have. That's why I'm trying to rectify my mistake. It was very profitable, so it wasn't a mistake, per se. It was more a willful act of defiance on my part, and I regret it. Newman Enterprises is strong and solid because of its diversity. We're everywhere you look. Our products and services are as much a part of everyday life as eating and sleeping. Why would we want to lose any part of that foothold?

Lauren: Because the cosmetic market is saturated.

Adam: And that's why you anticipate what the market wants and you give it to them, especially overseas. Organic and natural products are just picking up steam. We are in a very unique position to tap into this tremendous growth potential.

Bob: It sounds like you're more suited to handle this than Sharon is.

Nick: Adam doesn't work here anymore.

Bob: Maybe he should.

Nick: That is not going to be necessary. Look, while I have every confidence in Sharon that she'll be able to spearhead this new cosmetics line, if the board approves, I will run it with her. That should put any qualms you might have to rest.

Victor: Thank you, Son. Now let's get back to business. You all know where I stand, so why don't we bring it to a vote?

Connie: Please vote yea or nay on the matter of creating a new organics line within the Newman cosmetics division.

Victor: Yea.

Lauren: Nay.

Tucker: Nay.

Nick: Yea.

Adam: Clearly, I say yea.

Bob: I think it's still too risky. Nay.

Victor: Well, Davis, it's up to you to break the tie.

Davis: Yea.

Connie: Motion carries, 4 to 3.

Victor: All right, meeting adjourned. Thank you.

Victor: Adam? Thank you for your support.

Adam: You offered me help yesterday at the police station. Frankly, I think you were trying to buy my vote if, in fact, I could make it to this meeting on time. So I want you to know-- this, here, today, what I did-- this was not me accepting any kind of a bribe. I did this because I believe it's the right thing to do.

Nick: So what is this? The kinder, friendlier Adam?

Victor: I guess only time will tell. Excuse me.

(Door closes)

Nick: You got a long way to go to convince me-- a long way, and just so you know, around here, you won't be manning anything, not even the Newman switchboard.

Sharon: (Sighs) Oh, no. The board voted you down, didn't they?

Victor: You have such little faith.

Sharon: (Gasps) You mean--

Victor: There was some resistance, but it went through.

Sharon: What happened?

Victor: I'll tell you about it in the car.

Sharon: Oh, where are we going?

Victor: We're gonna have lunch-- not only to celebrate my birthday, but to celebrate you rejoining the company.

Sharon: And the new line.

Victor: That, most of all. Let's go.

Victoria: So you can see my dilemma, in terms of the trip.

Nikki: Honey, I think you absolutely should go. I'll do what I can to help out here.

Victoria: Really?

Abby: Yeah, so will I. This is too good of an opportunity to pass up. (Chuckles) Come on!

Victoria: Aw. You guys--you guys are the best.

Nikki: Oh, well, yes.

Abby: We know. We know. We know that, we do.

Nikki: We don't have to talk about that all the time.

Victoria: I appreciate it.

Nick: Hey, is this a, uh, group hug, or can I get in on this?

Victoria: Oh, hey!

Nikki: Hi! Where's your father? I thought he would be with you.

Nick: Oh, he had to wrap up a couple things. He's behind me, I'm sure.

Victoria: So how did the board meeting go?

Nick: You heard about that?

Victoria: Well, yeah. Just because I was barred from attending doesn't mean that I'm not somewhat...

Victor: Well! I hope you don't mind if Sharon joins us.

Nikki: No. It's your birthday.

Victor: Thank you. How nice everything is. My goodness. What a surprise.

Nikki: Hmm. (Gasps)

Abby: Excuse me.

Nikki: (Clears throat)

Victor: And champagne.

Nikki: Thank you.

Nick: Okay.

Nikki: Um, when you're done with this, could you set another place at the table, please? Thank you. To Victor, on his birthday. Wishing you another year of health and happiness.

Victor: Thank you. I'd like to propose a toast of my own to Newman Enterprises and its new organic cosmetics line, which has just been approved by the board of directors and will be ably run and steered to great success by Nicholas and Sharon. Cheers.

Sharon: Cheers.

Nick: Cheers.

Victoria: Cheers.

(Glasses clink)

Adam: (Sighs)

Chelsea: Oh. H-hey, it's me.

Adam: Hey, I--

Chelsea: I'm--I'm glad you called me back.

Adam: Yeah, I-I, uh, rushed out of the car earlier without thanking you for your help, so, um, I figured the least I could do was meet you for a cup of coffee.

Chelsea: That's very sweet. How'd the meeting go?

Adam: Well, it went. Um, I said what I had to say. I don't know if my brother or father are gonna believe I'm sincere or not.

Chelsea: Adam, are you okay?

Adam: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm--I'm all right. Just... I get these eye twitches from time to time. It's not--it's not a big deal. Goes with the territory, I guess. Here, here's some money. Um, I'm just gonna get a house blend, and you get whatever you want, 'cause I'm a baller. Buy everything you need.

Chelsea: (Laughs) Thanks. All right, there's, um, an empty chair to your left.

Adam: Oh, great. Thank you. Got it.

Nikki: (Clears throat) Son, do you really think it's a good idea to work so closely with Sharon?

Nick: I can handle it.

Victoria: Launching a new line from the ground up is a pretty big challenge.

Nick: Well, it'll give you time to get Beauty of Nature ready for the competition.

Abby: Okay, this is bizarre. I'm working at Jabot. You're at Beauty of Nature. You're launching a new line for Newman. I mean, now I'm not just competing with Dad. It's like we're all competing with each other.

Nikki: Yeah, let's not even talk about that.

Sharon: You know, maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Nikki planned this party for you and your kids, and--and I should just leave you here to celebrate with your family.

Victor: Sharon, nonsense. You're part of this family. Besides, I want you here, okay?

(Glasses clink)

Victoria: Congratulations on your new position.

Sharon: Thank you.

Victor: Thank you for coming.

Victoria: Mom insisted.

Sharon: Um, excuse me.

Victoria: So what did you tell Genevieve about Japan?

Genevieve: Shame on you. (Chuckles)

Victor: Why, what?

Genevieve: You didn't mention that it was your birthday.

Victor: Oh, that.

Genevieve: (Laughs)

Victor: My goodness.

Genevieve: I don't want to interrupt your party, but I did want to give you a little something.

Victoria: Oh.

Victor: A little big something, right?

Genevieve: (Laughs) Open it up and see.

Victor: My goodness. How nice of you. Well, well, well.

Victoria: Oh.

Victor: I'll be damned. A monogrammed briefcase.

Victoria: It's nice.

Victor: How nice. I appreciate that. Thank you.

Genevieve: It was the least I could do. You have a lovely birthday.

Victor: Thank you.

Genevieve: Good-bye, everyone. Thank you for indulging the interruption.

Victor: Uh, Genevieve.

Genevieve: Hmm?

Victor: Come to think of it, why don't you join us?

Genevieve: (Chuckles)

Tucker: I wonder what Adam backing Victor was all about.

Lauren: Yeah, and what about Davis Holloway? I mean, voting in favor after all that criticism?

Tucker: Someone must have gotten to him.

Lauren: You think Victor did?

Tucker: I didn't see 'em talking.

Lauren: Neither did I, but that doesn't mean anything.

Tucker: True. You know, Victor resents our input. You know, I don't think he'd ever come out and say it, but it's obvious in the way he handles these meetings.

Lauren: And everything's last-minute, you know, urgent. God forbid we should actually be able to, you know, understand the material.

Tucker: He's making it extremely difficult to contribute in any meaningful way.

Lauren: By design. Anyway, that's how I see it.

Tucker: You know... if you and I joined forces, we could do what we believe is best for the company, not just Victor. What do you think?

Lauren: I think that's the best proposal I've had all day.

Abby: Mm! Have a great birthday.

Victor: Thank you.

Abby: Love you. Mwah, mwah! Bye.

Victor: You go.

Genevieve: Thank you, Victor. I really enjoyed being a part of your birthday party, but now I must run, 'cause I have a plane to catch.

Victor: I'm glad you could join us. You have a safe trip, and good luck with your meeting.

Genevieve: Thank you, not that I'll need it. (Chuckles)

Victor: (Chuckles)

Victoria: (Laughs)

Nikki: So look, you just go, and don't worry. I will take care of everything here.

Victoria: Okay, Mom...

Nikki: All right?

Victoria: You are a lifesaver. Thank you so much.

Nikki: Mm... you're very welcome.

Victoria: I'm gonna go home and pack, okay?

Nikki: All right, Sweetie.

Victoria: All right. Thanks, Mom. Well, happy birthday, Dad. See you.

Victor: Considering our fight not too long ago, I think it's very nice that you put all this together. I love it when our family sits at the same table.

Nikki: Well, apparently, it wasn't enough to have just family.

Victor: Oh, please, let's not spoil this with that remark, okay?

Nikki: Okay, I-I don't want to fight, either. We've been doing way too much of that lately. Actually, I think a break would do us some good.

Victor: What do you mean, a break?

Nikki: I'm gonna move off the ranch for a while.

Victor: Is that your idea of reconciliation?

Nikki: Victor, it's just temporary. I will be back to--

Victor: I don't want to hear it, okay?

Nick: You know, considering it was a Newman family get-together, things went relatively well.

Victor: About tonight, um... we're gonna have to celebrate with the girls another time, all right? I won't be home.

Sharon: Um... Victor told me about the board meeting and what happened, how you supported me despite how you feel about us working together. So I appreciate that, and you know, if-- if this is going to complicate your life too much...

Nick: Let's just see how it goes.

Sharon: Fair enough.

Nick: All right.

Doctor: Follow the light with just your eyes. Is the light on or off?

Adam: It's off. It's on. Now it's off again. Still off. (Chuckles)

Doctor: When did you begin to notice things were changing?

Adam: I, uh, I-I don't know. I've felt pressure and--and--and twinges, you know, in my eyes. And then yesterday, downstairs, I-- there was like this light, a flash of light, and I could see, like, blurry images, and then it became more clear. I was able to make out--

Doctor: How much clearer?

Adam: Well, I-I can make out people's faces across the room now, and I'm able to read text that's s-smaller and smaller.

Doctor: (Chuckles) Good. Very good. I... (Sighs) I-I'm beyond pleased. I--

Adam: Yeah, no, no, so am I. I-I just want to make sure that this is not gonna be something where it's temporary, right? It's not a fluke...

Doctor: (Sighs)

Adam: Where I'm gonna go back to seeing darkness again?

Doctor: I can't definitely tell you that won't happen. But you have a reason to be optimistic. I want you to come to the office and, uh, have a more thorough exam.

Adam: Okay, I'll set up an appointment. Um, now you can't say anything to anyone because of doctor/patient confidentiality, right?

Doctor: Outside of my staff, no. Oh, I understand. You want to tell your family and friends the good news yourself.

(Door closes)

Adam: Or not.

Sharon: Morning.

Nick: Morning.

Sharon: So where is Victor? I thought the three of us were supposed to have a meeting.

Nick: He got called out of town on business, so it's just the two of us.

Chelsea: (Sighs) Is Victoria upstairs?

Nikki: She's out of town.

Chelsea: Since when?

Nikki: Last night. And since Billy's gone, too, I'm gonna be staying here to keep you company.

Billy: Oh.

Victoria: Oh, hi!

Billy: What the heck--

Victoria: Aren't you gonna say hello?

Billy: What are you doing here?

Victoria: Well, its St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Billy: Why, hello. Hello.

Victoria: Hello. (Giggles)

Billy: Mm. Mm.

Genevieve: I am so sorry, but the man that I was supposed to be meeting should have been here an hour ago.

Woman: Oh, it happens often. Traffic around Tokyo very bad.

Genevieve: I'm sure that's it. Thank you. (Sighs)

Victor: Konbanwa.

Next on "The Young and the Restless"...

Nick: I tell you there's nothing between Sharon and me, but you just flip out again.

Nikki: It's a mistake to be away too long from the one you love.

Victor: You knew that I would be here, and yet you showed up, so what's your reason for being here?
