Episode # 9790 ~ Phyllis' Behavior Pushes Nick to the Limit

Tucker: So, Harmony, what happened with you staying gone to give Devon space?

Kay: You owe him nothing, Harmony, not even an explanation.

Harmony: No, that's all right, Mrs. Chancellor, because I think Tucker should know this. Your mother welcomed me back into her home, and so here I am, whether you like it or not.

Devon: Hey. Yeah, that stuff goes right in the corner. Thank you. (Exhales sharply) (Sighs) (Exhales slowly) Hey, hi.

Ashley: Hi.

Devon: Hi. You wouldn't happen to have an ad/da converter in there, would you?

Ashley: Oh, well, I'm gonna have to check on that. Let me see. Maybe. (Gasps) No, but I know what I do have.

Devon: My goodness.

Ashley: Yeah, Abby wanted me to get you that check as soon as possible.

Devon: Wow.

Ashley: (Chuckles)

Devon: (Chuckles) When your daughter invests in something, she really goes all out, doesn't she?

Ashley: Well, she's got a lot of faith in you, and the capital to back it up.

Devon: Well, I, uh, I need to give her a thank-you call and I better turn a profit quick. (Chuckles)

Ashley: That is stunning. Is that where you're gonna put it? What are you gonna do with it?

Devon: You know, I haven't, gotten that far yet.

Ashley: Yeah. Well, when Abby asked me to be her messenger I was really happy, because we never got a chance to talk at my wedding, and you being at the wedding was the best gift you could have ever given Tucker and me. I wanted to say thank you.

Avery: Mm.

(Cell phone vibrates)

Avery: (Sighs) It's okay.

Nick: Yeah?

Avery: Mm-hmm.

Nick: Okay. (Sighs) Uh, it's just work.

Avery: Mm. It's Phyllis. Yeah.

Nick: I should, uh, probably get back to the office.

Avery: Mm.

Nick: (Sighs)

Avery: But... you haven't had your lunch

Nick: It's never a good idea to leave Phyllis there too long.

Avery: Mm.

Nick: But I'll be back for dinner, all right? Stay right there.

Avery: (Laughs)

Phyllis: Too busy to answer your phone. Uh-huh. (Sighs) Okay, Nick, you may not care about selling magazines, but I do. (Exhales slowly) And if you're mad at me, Nick, or... Ronan, if you're mad at me, so be it, you know?

(Computer keys clicking)

Phyllis: I'm doing my job. This is too good to be true. Come on. I can't pass this up.

(Computer keys clicking)

Phyllis: "Do the police have a new suspect in their sights?"

(Computer keys clicking)

Paul: Hey. I got your message. What's up?

Ronan: I thought you should be here for questioning. You have some personal insight into this suspect.

Nikki: Hello, Paul.

Victor: Its 131 miles. That's plenty of time to get here. Oh, my God. Nikki... did you kill Diane? I'll talk to you later. (Sighs) Yes, Bonnie.

Bonnie: I've checked, and Mrs. Newman's car still isn't here.

Victor: Huh. Did she say anything about going somewhere after the meeting?

Bonnie: No. I'm sorry, Sir.

Victor: Thank you, Bonnie.

(Cell phone vibrates)

Victor: Yes, Michael.

Michael: Victor, Nikki's been taken to the police station for questioning.

Paul: Come on, sit down. So, uh, when did you get back?

Nikki: Yesterday. (Clears throat)

Paul: Wow.

Ronan: There's no place like home, huh?

Nikki: Uh, no, there isn't.

Paul: Um, I assume you are, uh, waiting for an attorney, right?

Nikki: Yeah.

Paul: Michael?

Ronan: That doesn't mean we can't get some of the preliminaries out of the way.

Paul: Oh.

Nikki: (Clears throat)

Ronan: I understand that you've been in a rehab facility. Are you sober now?

Nikki: I am.

Ronan: Good. When was the last time you had a drink?

Nikki: Um, the day before I went to Iowa.

Ronan: Iowa. The New Life Center, right? All right. What day was your check-in there?

Nikki: Oh, I-- I'm not sure. I don't know.

Ronan: June 3rd. And you checked out of the facility on October 25th. That was a long run. What's the drive time from Dubuque to Genoa City?

Nikki: Uh, I wouldn't know. We took the jet.

Ronan: Its two hours and 56 minutes, give or take. Did you ever leave the facility while you were there?

Nikki: We went on outings.

Ronan: I meant, did you ever leave without permission? I understand it that you left July 31st, came back the following day, and Diane Jenkins was murdered in the early morning hours of august the 1st. So, Mrs. Newman, I'm sure you understand me asking you, where did you go when you left the facility, and what did you do?

Nick: Hey.

Phyllis: (Hits desk) Did I disturb your 3-hour lunch?

Nick: Did my mother check in, by chance?

Phyllis: No why, is someone looking for her?

Nick: What is that? "Rest in Peace."

Phyllis: It's a story idea I'm working on.

Nick: You mean, after I told you that we are not doing this story? Are you accusing my mother of murder?

Devon: (Sighs) Look, Ashley, I-ally don't want to get into the whole Tucker issue right now. I-I gave it a shot and went to your wedding. That's really as far as I want to take it.

Ashley: Well, you know Tucker's not going anywhere. I don't mean he's gonna be camped out on your doorstep...

Devon: (Chuckles)

Ashley: And I won't, either, I promise. (Laughs)

Devon: All right, good.

Ashley: But... he is a part of you. Nothing's ever gonna change that, and I know he cares about you, and nothing's gonna change that, either. I think there's room in your life for Tucker, and I think Neil would agree.

Devon: I-I just-- you know, I just don't see that right now.

Ashley: Okay. You know-- Devon, you know what it's like to lose somebody before you're ready, and you know that loss that you feel and that emptiness? Um, you can't control who you lose, but can reach out to the people that want to be there for you now. Honey, it's just-- it's just so worth the risk.

Devon: I appreciate you stopping by, and, uh...

Ashley: Okay.

Devon: I need to get back to setting up the board, though.

Ashley: Okay, you do that, and you know what? Good luck, because you've got a really special place here. You take care.

Devon: You, too. (Sighs)

Tucker: You know what's funny about this? I came here to meet you halfway. You know, the golden rule and all that, but evidently, you do unto others in your own special way.

Kay: Nobody's done anything to you, Tucker.

Tucker: She's using you again. You know that? To make headway with Devon. He's the finish line. He's just n acquisition.

Kay: He's my family.

Tucker: In theory. In theory, so am I. Now let me tell you something, it's been great so far. Now I will protect my son from you and from anyone else who can hurt him.

Harmony: Are you threatening me, Tucker? 'Cause you don't know me. Now if you want to tussle in some family drama, that's between your mama and you. It ain't got nothing to do with me. Now I'm here for my son. That's all, and ain't you or nobody else gonna get in the way of that.

Ronan: Did the administrator get it wrong? Did you not leave the center without permission?

Paul: You know, Nikki, if you want to wait for Michael, that would be, uh, perfectly understandable.

Ronan: I'm sure if Mrs. Newman had a problem with our questions, Paul, she would let us know herself.

Nikki: (Clears throat)

Ronan: So again, Mrs. Newman, where did you go when you left the center?

Nikki: I-I don't... (Stammering) I don't recall.

Ronan: You don't recall? I mean, how is that possible?

Nikki: Because I was drunk.

Ronan: So you were drinking during your rehab.

Nikki: I relapsed.

Ronan: Okay. Well, what triggered that? 'Cause I was thinking it could be the alienation of affection lawsuit that Diane Jenkins filed against you, the tabloid photos of you and Victor in bed.

Nikki: I just told you, I was drunk. I don't know. It's a blur.

Ronan: Did you love your ex-husband?

Nikki: Yes.

Ronan: And then he went and married Diane, which made you the other woman. I mean, you were branded a "Slut" for that?

Paul: Hey, knock it off.

Ronan: And Diane Jenkins was a liar. She was a gold digger, an opportunist. Then she went and took your man and publicly humiliated you. I mean, how do you stop a crazy bitch like that, huh? You bash her in the head with a rock?

Michael: What the hell's going on? Paul? Nikki, not another word.

Ronan: It's okay. I'm done.

Michael: Oh, you're done. Mrs. Newman calls for counsel, and yet you go ahead and question her anyway.

Ronan: I didn't question her. We were just chatting.

Michael: Well, you haven't charged her, so she will be leaving.

Ronan: Oh, Mrs. Newman, I'll be in touch.

Michael: I'll have to have a word with the detective. Nikki, if you'll wait outside...

Nikki: Mm-hmm.

Michael: I'll get the paperwork.

Nikki: What are you doing here?

Deacon: I figured maybe you could use a ride.

Nikki: Get me out of here.

Deacon: Let's go.

Nick: My mom has been back for, like, two minutes, and you've already got her in an orange jumpsuit. Based on what? Wh-who's your source? Where's your evidence?

Phyllis: Okay, we're gonna talk about this when you calm down, okay?

Nick: We are talking about Summer's grandmother, who is freshly sober and finally back home. Now I know you don't give a damn about your parents, but--

Phyllis: Oh, don't, don't-- no, no, no, no, no, no. You're not gonna bring up my parents, okay? That's not a part of this conversation, and if you were so deeply concerned about family and had so much respect for family, you wouldn't be having sex with my sister!

Nick: That is enough.

Phyllis: (Sighs)

Nick: That's what this is about? You want to use my magazine and my parents to get back at me?

Phyllis: No, my job is page views and magazine sales. That's my job--nothing else.

Nick: No, it's not. You want to know what your job is? It's to listen to me, your boss, which you never do, so you don't work here anymore. You're fired.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? I just wrote the story. It was a story idea, Nick. I didn't print it. I didn't send it out. I didn't do anything with it. It was an idea, and you're losing your mind.

Nick: I told you no, and you didn't listen, 'cause you just don't give a damn. I'll tell you "Absolutely not" on something, and you do it anyway. You do--

Phyllis: Yeah, I do it anyway! I do it anyway. That's right, I do whatever I want, don't I? Because I'm strong-minded, I'm strong-willed, and I'm stubborn, and that's what makes me a great mother and an incredible friend and an amazing... (Voice cracks) amazing wife... (Normal voice) And a damn good magazine editor, damn good. So you know what? Let's just, um, agree to disagree and move on, like we always seem to do, right? I have a million other story ideas. Let's go over them.

Nick: Phyllis, I just fired you. That was real. It just happened, so get out.

Paul: What the hell were you doing, hammering at Nikki? She asked for her attorney.

Ronan: She answered my questions of her own volition.

Paul: You were out of line. It was a mistake.

Ronan: I'm starting to think the only mistake was having you in the room.

Paul: Oh, come on, Ronan. You knew exactly what you were doing, and you brought me in here. You know I know her. She is a kind, decent, moral human being, and she doesn't have it in her to--to beat someone to death.

Ronan: Can you speak for her character when she's jealous and humiliated and drunk out of her mind?

Paul: She didn't do it.

Ronan: I'm waiting on some reports on A.T.M.s between here and Dubuque.

Michael: Paperwork's complete. Did we interrupt something?

Paul: (Whispering) If you love Nikki, you will see to it that she gets through this in one piece. (Slams door)

Victor: Nikki is going home. Where is she?

Ronan: If she's not in the squad room, I guess she took off.

Nikki: Thanks for the ride.

Deacon: Oh, come on, Nikki. You're hanging on by a thread. All right, look-- great, there's booze in the house. I-I'm not leaving.

Nikki: Well, feel free to watch.

Deacon: Please don't do this. I--look, hey, we can go to another meeting, all right? I--there's another one in 20 minutes.

Nikki: Salute.

Deacon: (Sighs) So, uh, everything at the meeting was just bunch of B.S., right? I mean, obviously, you're--you're off the wagon.

Nikki: What I said was, um, "One day at a time." "One hour at a time," is what I said, and at this hour I need a drink.

Deacon: Is this about Diane? Is this about the night that she died? I saw you in the park. I know.

Nikki: You know what? This is probably very awkward for you, so... you should probably go.

Deacon: Nikki, please, I'm not gonna say anything. I'm not gonna tell anybody what I saw. Please, just... know that.

Nikki: I asked you to leave.

Deacon: We--we can talk. I just want you to know that I understand. W-we don't have to talk. Just please put the glass down.

Nikki: Will you go away?

Deacon: I-I can't do that.

Nikki: Fine. (Slams glass down) I can.

Deacon: (Sighs)

Tucker: You're right, I don't know you, and maybe it's the other way around. Maybe you're using her to get to Devon.

Harmony: You know what? Listen, I know that you're used to power games and head trips, but I don't roll like that. Now I walked away from my son more than once, and I chose getting high over every single thing that mattered to me. But I'm clean and I'm back, and I'm not just back for my sake. I look in Devon's eyes and I know how much I hurt him. I don't care how tough he acts. And if I can take away some of that pain, that's what I'm going to do, no matter what it takes.

Tucker: No matter what it takes. I hear you. Even if it means livin' here with her. Well, it's not a free ride, Harmony. Hey, it's gonna cost you. Only question is, what?

Harmony: (Scoffs)

Nick: Hey.

Avery: Hi. You must be hungry, unless you grabbed something at the office.

Nick: (Sighs) No, didn't have time. I was too busy firing Phyllis.

Avery: Uh, what happened?

Nick: She pushed. I had enough.

Avery: Well, maybe you just need time to cool off.

Nick: It's not gonna matter. I mean, I just can't take it anymore, all this drama, and we're always butting heads. It doesn't matter what I tell her. She's just gonna do whatever she wants anyway.

Avery: Well, that's part of her charm. She always was the feisty one.

Nick: A lot of children are like that, you know? They think they're the center of the universe, and they do things without any repercussions.

Avery: And Phyllis doesn't understand consequences. If she did, she wouldn't have left us and never looked back. She's still the same selfish, self-centered girl who will never change.

Ronan: Hi. I didn't know you'd be coming over.

Phyllis: Ah, I like the ambience.

Ronan: (Chuckles)

Phyllis: How's the case?

Ronan: My case is fine, thanks. It's moving ahead. What's going on with you?

Phyllis: Oh, you know... busy. I have a lot of balls in the air.

Ronan: (Chuckles)

Phyllis: I got fired. Yeah, Nick fired me. (Sighs) Oh, it's gonna be all over the internet. The other editors are gonna have a field day with that. (Laughs) Fine. It’s a lot... easier, though than telling everybody in town here what's happening.

Ronan: Okay. (Sighs) There's a way to get around that.

Phyllis: I'm not begging for my job back.

Ronan: And you shouldn't. I was talking more about-- maybe take some time away.

Phyllis: Run in shame?

Ronan: Not at all, no. Everybody's up into everybody's business in this town. Maybe you should be somewhere else for a minute.

Phyllis: Yeah. I won't run into Avery and Nick every--every time I turn around.

Ronan: Yeah, there's that. You could also spend some one-on-one time with your baby girl.

Phyllis: Yeah. Um, I'm not suddenly going to become a suspect, am I? I mean, you won't think I'm sneaking off?

Ronan: (Laughs) You mean I gonna send the bloodhounds after you? No. No, I won't. You're gonna do it?

Phyllis: Are you trying to get rid of me?

Ronan: No, I'm not.

Phyllis: Yeah, I'll do it. Don't miss me too much.

Ronan: I think I might.

Phyllis: Ditto.

Ronan: (Sighs)

Nikki: Yeah. (Stomps foot) You were watching us weren't you, Diane? You did this.

(Door opens, slams)

Victor: Nikki?

Victor: What the hell are you doing in my house? Where's Nikki?

Deacon: She's still on the grounds, I think. Vic--Victor, she's been drinking. (Sighs) (Sighs)

Nick: Is this yours?

Avery: Yes. (Laughs) Why are you looking at my phone?

Nick: It's quite a screen saver.

Avery: (Laughs)

Phyllis: Amazing. (Clicks lips) Yeah, the receptionist told me you'd be here. Um, what are you having? A toast to my firing? I need to talk to you about a couple things.

Nick: We covered everything at the office.

Phyllis: No, we didn't. We didn't. I need to talk to you in private, please.

Nick: Okay. Excuse me.

Nick: What?

Phyllis: (Sighs) Since my services are no longer needed at "Restless Style," I'm taking a vacation with Lucy. I'm assuming that you can watch after Summer. Is that correct?

Nick: Of course, I can watch our daughter. How long will you be gone?

Phyllis: I don't know. I'll keep you in the loop.

Phyllis: Oh, um... (Whispering) By the way, Avery he's all yours, Sweetie. Go for it.

Kay: That was an education, watching you handle Tucker.

Harmony: I could say the same for you

Kay: It's hard to imagine you two being involved.

Harmony: I was young and stupid, and he was gorgeous and funny. He ain't so funny now.

Kay: (Laughs)

Harmony: And he knew what to say and how to say it. Then he was gone, and then I was young, stupid, and pregnant.

(Doorbell rings)

Kay: Excuse me.

Kay: Hello, Devon.

Devon: This won't take long. May I come in?

Kay: Of course.

Harmony: Hey.

Devon: Hey, Mom.

Harmony: I'm really glad to see you, and I've been-- I've been wanting--

Devon: No, I just came to give this to you.

Kay: What is it?

Devon: It's a cashier's check. It's reimbursement for your initial investment in my label.

Kay: Devon, that money was yours, to do with as you saw fit. It still is.

Devon: Well, I'm doing exactly what I want to do with it, and that's handing it right back to you.

Kay: (Sighs)

Ashley: (Gasps)

Tucker: Wife.

Ashley: Husband!

Tucker: (Laughs)

Ashley: How are you? Mwah!

Tucker: Mm.

Ashley: It's good to see you. I missed you.

Tucker: Oh, you look beautiful. (Sighs)

Ashley: So how was the therapy?

Tucker: Oh, therapy.

Ashley: Yeah.

Tucker: Well... (Sighs) My therapist suggested that I want a relationship with my son, I should work on my relationship with my mother.

Ashley: Oh, that.

Tucker: Mm-hmm.

Ashley: Well, I guess there's a certain logic to it.

Tucker: I thought so, too, but there's nothing logical about dealing with Katherine.

Ashley: Did you already go see her? What happened?

Tucker: She took Harmony back into her home.

Ashley: I thought Harmony left town.

Tucker: She came back big surprise, huh?

Ashley: Now wait a second. So what is Katherine thinking, taking Harmony into her home to live?

Tucker: I don't know but I think Katherine lies awake at night, tryin' to come up with ways to get to Devon and squeeze me out.

Ashley: Well, you can't control the way Devon feels about Katherine, but then again, she can't control the way that he feels about you, and he did come to our wedding, didn't he?

Tucker: He did. He didn't stick around, though.

Ashley: So what? I saw him here earlier, you know.

Tucker: Yeah?

Ashley: Uh-huh. Spoke to him, and you know what? He seemed to listen. I think with a little time and maybe a lot of patience, you are gonna get somewhere. I hope so.

Tucker: Well, that's good news. (Sighs) Oh, Man. Things with Katherine-- they just complicate matters. I think the therapist is off on this one. The farther away I stay from my mother, the better. Want a refill?

Ashley: Sure.

Tucker: (Sighs)

(Cell phone rings) (Ring)

Ashley: Hello.

Emily: Uh, yes. I-I was looking for Tucker McCall.

Ashley: He's busy right now. May I take a message?

Emily: Yes, um, would you tell him to call Dr. Peterson, please?

Ashley: Emily, is that you?

(Knock on door)

Paul: (Sighs)

Ronan: You got a hit on the A.T.M.s. Where?

Paul: Just off the highway between here and Dubuque. Video footage in the early morning hours after Diane was killed. Nikki withdrew $500.

Ronan: I knew it.

Paul: It doesn't prove anything.

Ronan: Did you check with New Life about any other activity?

Paul: A wallet and an I.D. were missing the afternoon of the 31st.

Ronan: And they just happened to show up the next morning, right?

Paul: We're still looking into the credit card activity.

Ronan: One more thing-- New Life is connected to a hospital, so go check with them and see if anything's missing from their med closet, namely succinylcholine. Paul... I'm sorry, but it is looking more and more like your ex may have done this.

Nikki: So where did you stand, Diane, to watch this? Did you stand here? Did you like the view? Maybe it was more over here.

Victor: Nikki.

Nikki: Oh, you-- please just go away. Victor, please.

Victor: Sweetheart. Sweetheart.

Nikki: You can't be with me.

Victor: I am not leaving.

Nikki: You cannot be with me anymore. It's wrong. It's just wrong.

Victor: I am-- I am not leaving you.

Nikki: Victor, you have to. You have to!

Victor: I am not letting you go!

Nikki: You don't understand!

Victor: You'll be okay.

Nikki: (Whispering) I will not be okay. (Normal voice) Nothing will ever be okay again. Don't you understand? It's ruined. It's ruined. (Sobs) It's ruined!

Victor: Baby, come here. Come here, Baby.

Nikki: (Sobbing) It's not ever gonna be okay.

Victor: Come here, Baby. What are you doing?

Kay: Yes, Devon. I knew about our connection when I asked you to join Chancellor Industries. But I wasn't just investing in a record label. I was investing in you, your future.

Devon: Well, an investment implies that you expect a return, but you don't want money. You want a relationship, and I can't do that.

Kay: (Sighs)

Devon: Mom, you look good and you sound good, like you really want to stay clean this time.

Harmony: That's the plan.

Devon: Then put your faith in someone who sees you as more than a means to an end...

Kay: (Sighs)

Devon: 'Cause you're not gonna find that person here.

Kay: (Sighs)

Devon: (Sighs)

Devon: (Sighs)

Tucker: I get a call?

Ashley: You did, actually.

Tucker: Mm-hmm.

Ashley: So Jacks ex-fiancée Emily-- that's your therapist?

Paul: (Sighs)

Paul: Hi. Scotch neat, please.

Emily: Paul? I... I'm sorry. It's--it's me, Emily, not Patty.

Avery: Phyllis, wait.

Phyllis: (Sighs)

Avery: I'm sorry. I'm sorry about happened with Nick.

Phyllis: (Scoffs) Oh, my God, are you kidding me? Wait, you're being-- you're being serious? You're not sorry at the least, not at all. What, are you gonna be editor in chief of "Restless Style" while I'm gone? Move into my penthouse? Don't get too comfy, 'cause I'm coming back.

Avery: I'm not trying to take over your life.

Phyllis: Oh, my God, that's exactly what you're trying to do. You know, for a really smart attorney, you just don't get it, do you, Avery? You don't get it. I mean, you've said that many, many times, for the record, but the jury ain't buying it. You're trying to punish me for leaving.

Avery: You didn't have to leave.

Phyllis: Oh, my God, I can't even believe you're telling-- I can't even believe that this keeps going on and on. This is amazing.

Avery: Phyllis, no matter what you think, no one wanted you to.

Phyllis: This keeps going on I can't listen to this!

Avery: So much would have been different if you stayed! (Sighs) Well I hoped I was wrong, but it's true. Phyllis will never change.

Ronan: (Sighs)

(Touch-tones beeping)

Ronan: So did you find your runaway client?

(Touch-tones beep)

Michael: You harass my client again, I will file a formal complaint.

(Cell phone rings)

Ronan: (Sighs) This is Malloy. Well, where is the judge right now? Okay, well, go interrupt him. Yes. I want that arrest warrant now.

Nikki: Oh, God, I can feel it. (Gasping) It's turning me black inside... (Gasps) What I did.

Victor: Nikki, you're done nothing. You're just exhausted.

Nikki: I was just trying to protect you all, that's all. (Gasping and sobbing)

Victor: Sweetheart, stop talking right now, okay? You're just exhausted. You need some sleep, some water--

Nikki: (Gasping) I can't breathe, Victor. I can't breathe. And I won't be able to breathe until I say it. (Gasps)

Victor: Until you say what?

Nikki: (Gasping) God, help me. I did it. (Sniffles) I did it. I killed Diane. (Gasps) I killed Diane. (Sobbing) I'm sorry. (Gasps)

Next on "The Young and The Restless" --

Ashley: You need to get another therapist. I really think you do.

Emily: I wanted to see you.

Jack: How do I know it's you?

Victor: Sweetheart, you left only for one night. You went back the next morning.

Nikki: Hey, but it wasn't just any night, was it?
