Jill: Well, see, that's part of what I wanted to talk to you about-- the on-site training for the sales force you're working--
Jack: Uh, one second. One second. Noah?
Noah: Hey.
Jill: Hi.
Jack: I've been trying to convince Noah here to write a few songs to go underneath our, uh, new radio and TV ads.
Jill: Wow, that could be the start of something big.
Noah: Yeah. (Sighs) So, uh, I tossed around your offer like you asked, but I'm already working on another project.
Jack: Call if you change your mind.
Noah: I will. Thanks. Bye.
Jill: Bye. Whoa, he's really on to you.
Jack: What is that supposed to mean?
Jill: Oh, Jack, you're so eager to have the next generation of Newmans under your wing, aren't you? (Laughs)
(Cell phone rings)
[Jill remembering]
Genevieve: Did you know that Colin and I slept together earlier tonight right before he put on that little dog-and-pony show for you with me on the phone?
Jack: He's still calling, huh?
Jill: Yeah. He's kind of desperate, too. The last time we were together, he told me he was divorcing his wife.
Colin: I won't take up much of your time.
Genevieve: Well, after you've taken the best years of someone's life, what's a few more minutes?
Colin: (Sighs) Nevertheless, this might actually gladden your day.
Colin: Divorce papers.
Nick: So Noah went to see Sharon. It's the first time since she's been to prison.
Phyllis: Wow. How did that go?
Nick: I don't know. I'll call him and check as soon as I head back to the office.
Phyllis: I-I'm sure it would mean a lot to Sharon to have his support, you know? Especially with this, uh, potential new trial happening. This crackerjack lawyer, um...
Nick: Yeah, Avery Clark.
Phyllis: Yeah, right.
Nick: Apparently, she's a real fighter. Dad said that she has basically devoted her career to defending people who have been wrongly convicted.
Phyllis: That's great. Someone's gotta do it.
Nick: Yep. You ready to get out of here? (Sighs)
Phyllis: Um... uh, yeah, I-I'll meet you there.
Nick: See you.
Phyllis: (Clears throat)
Adam: I'm saving that seat, actually, for anyone but you.
Phyllis: (Chuckles) That's a joke. Nobody in this town wants to sit near you, let alone buy you a coffee.
Adam: You're getting me a coffee, huh? What do you want?
Phyllis: I want to know what you think about Sharon's prospects. What's you're take on it? Especially since she has this new attorney.
Adam: Mm, Avery Bailey Clark. Yeah, she'- she's a real charmer.
Phyllis: Avery Bailey...
Adam: Clark, yeah.
Phyllis: Tell me about her.
Sharon: I didn't think I'd see you again so soon.
Avery: Well, I have news. Spencer Walsh got back to me this morning.
Sharon: And? What did he say? Did he agree?
Avery: Yes. You've been granted a new trial.
Sharon: (Sighs)
Nick: Thank you. So how was it seeing your mom?
Noah: Well, I was surprised at how well she's doing. You should go check it out for yourself.
Nick: (Sighs) You're the one she wants to see.
Noah: Dad, come on. I mean, I'm not asking you to get all invested or whatever. We're just talking about a visit, 'cause you were right. I-it almost doesn't matter what you say while you're there. It's just about being there. And you gotta know Mom's dying to see Faith.
Nick: Well, I'm not convinced it's the best thing for Faith, and that has to be the deciding factor.
Noah: Since when is being around Mom bad for her?
Nick: In an environment like that?
Noah: It's all the same to Faith at her age.
Nick: We don't know that.
Noah: Look, Dad, I-I-I get that facing Mom would be tough for you, but if--
Nick: Look, this is not about me, Son.
Noah: Yes, it is.
Nick: No, it's not.
Noah: You're not protecting Faith. You're punishing Mom for choosing Adam over you.
Adam: Typically, you don't give a damn what my opinion is about anything.
Phyllis: Yeah, I don't. I don't care what your opinion is. That's true. I just, um, I'm doin' a story, uh, about "The champion of the underdog," and I want your opinion. I think our readers are very interested in-- in your opinion about... this woman who is working so hard to rebuild, uh, Sharon's case that you so successfully sabotaged. So... what--what do--what do you-- what do you think about her? I mean, um, have you met your match? Is she as formidable as people are saying?
Adam: I actually have no idea how she's in her other cases. (Sighs) Perhaps the jurors felt sorry for her. She's a walking disaster-- klutzy, blunt, and, yes, you can quote me on that.
Phyllis: Yeah, that--I'll-- I'm gonna--I'm gonna quote you.
Adam: Mm-hmm, yeah, 'cause I'm referring to all the copious notes you've been taking during this interview. This isn't for a story at all, is it?
Phyllis: Uh... (Sighs) What else would it be for, Adam?
Adam: You have your own reasons why you're interested in Avery Bailey Clark.
Avery: Pretrial motions will start next week, and you should be in court a few days after that.
Sharon: Wow, so soon?
Avery: Mm-hmm, well, Spencer probably thinks it'll work to his advantage, that I'll be unprepared. He's wrong, which is another reason I'm here. I want to go over your version of all the events one more time, make sure I haven't missed anything. (Sighs) Okay, so you went to Hawaii for Adam's sake.
Sharon: Yes, to prove that he didn't murder Skye, that she faked her own death. Once I got there, Adam suggested that I go on the nighttime volcano hike. He thought that might be something that would appeal to Skye.
Avery: So Adam owes his freedom to you.
Sharon: You know, as furious as I am with him for destroying the evidence that could have cleared my name, I'm better off, because I'm gonna get out of here without owing him a damn thing.
Avery: "Gonna get out of here"-- I like that positive thinking. Sharon, it's everything. Once you give up, stop caring, stop trying, you're done. And we are so not done. We're just getting started.
Jack: Hasn't Colin told you all along that the marriage is just a technicality? That their relationship died a long time ago? That all that's left is the legality?
Jill: No, the relationship's not dead, okay? It's... (Chuckles) It's undead, like a zombie. It is the sickest, most unhealthy relationship I have ever seen.
Jack: Well, isn't that all the more reason he'd want to move on to something else or someone else? You being the "Someone else."
Colin: I know I said I'd have the attorney do this, but it seemed a little impersonal.
Genevieve: Such compassion. Okay. It certainly seems to be in order.
Colin: That's it?
Genevieve: Would you prefer more drama?
Colin: No, no, no. No, this'll do fine.
Colin: You know, after all the... strum and the drang and what have you, it's ending... like this.
Genevieve: Yeah.
Colin: I'm sorry, Gen. I know that's completely inadequate, given the hurt involved. But... I-it's sincere.
Genevieve: There was a reason that we loved each other... once.
Colin: Yeah. I'm hoping that through this wreckage, some kind of friendship can be salvaged.
Genevieve: Anything's possible.
Colin: I should be going.
(Taps on table)
Genevieve: Oh, uh, Colin, by the way, since we're sort of... (Sighs) Baring our souls to each other, um, I think there's something that you should probably know.
Colin: What?
Genevieve: I let it slip to Jill that we slept together the other day. So if you were thinking that by divorcing me you were gonna convince her that you're over me, I don't know. I think maybe you want to rethink that.
Noah: You know, its one thing taking it out on Mom, but this is totally unfair to Faith.
Nick: I am putting her needs first, which is a lot more than I can say for your mother.
Noah: Well, don't pretend this is for Faith's sake or mine. You know, even if it is, you gotta let it go. I mean, how many times have you forgiven Phyllis? Aunt Vicki? Grandma? Grandpa? I mean, I'd be your age by the time we could list the things that he's done that you've forgiven.
Nick: Well, your mother's list would get a whole lot longer if I took Faith to that prison and she got traumatized in any way.
Noah: Oh, come on.
Nick: You have no idea, Son, how long it has taken to give Faith a sense of normalcy, a routine again.
Noah: If she had to choose between normalcy, whatever that is, and her mother, we both know what she'd choose. No, sell it whatever you want. It's wrong keeping them apart.
Nick: I'm not saying it's gonna be forever.
Noah: She apologized for running away. She's paying for the things that she did and things that she didn't. What--what more do you want?
Nick: It is not as easy as you make it sound, Son.
Noah: You don't want to see Mom for whatever reason? Fine. I'll take Faith myself.
Nick: No, you are not doing that. No-Noah.
Noah: You know, after Cassíe died, and you cut us out, and you left us, we forgave you.
Jill: You barely know Colin. What, are you telling me you have some weird insight into his psyche?
Jack: No, I'm merely pointing out the obvious. He's ending a decades-old marriage. There has to be some reason. I'm not saying you're it, but it's hard to believe that you're not.
Jill: You know what? (Chuckles) This was supposed to be a business meting.
Jack: Yeah, yeah, well, we finished all of our business. Hey, I didn't mean to upset you.
Jill: I'm not upset. I'm not upset. I'm not upset.
Jack: Okay. I'll talk to you later.
Jill: Okay.
Jill: (Sighs)
Colin: (Chuckles) You are such a piece of vindictiveness.
Genevieve: I only told Jill the truth, and actually, I think she appreciated it. You know, we women do have to stick together with predators like you on the loose.
Colin: You continue with your games, but you're now playing them alone, 'cause I've had it.
Genevieve: But they're your games, Colin. You recruited me. You trained me. (Chuckles) And now if I've surpassed your level of expertise, you have no one to blame but yourself. I know you really hate to lose. It's okay. Take some time. Lick your wounds.
Colin: (Scoffs) Oh, I'm not taking a temporary break. Genevieve, I've outgrown you.
Genevieve: Then why are you still here?
(Front door closes)
Genevieve: (Inhales deeply) (Whimpers) (Exhales shakily)
Phyllis: I'm not interested in this Avery Bailey Clark person. I'm not. See, that's the thing is, it's this crusader for justice sor--kind of-- I-it's boring.
Adam: But you're not bored, are you? You're threatened.
Phyllis: Please, a mind reader you're not. I hope you don't try to get a job doing something--
Adam: Now if Miss Clark does her job well and she springs Sharon, then, I don't know, perhaps Sharon's available for Nicholas.
Phyllis: (Sighs)
Avery: We're trying to find Koa so he can testify that he saw the video of you trying to save Skye.
Sharon: Yeah, he disappeared months ago, which doesn't mean that it's hopeless.
Avery: That's right. Nothing is hopeless when you have Victor Newman in your corner. He's got private investigators searching the globe.
(Footsteps approach)
Sharon: Nick?
(Cell phone rings)
Jill: (Sighs)
(Ring)
Jill: What do you want, Colin?
Colin: There's something I want to talk do you about. (Sighs) And I really don't want to do it over the phone.
Jill: Well, there are some things I'd like to say to you, too, and definitely in person.
Jack: I hope you don't mind my coming by unannounced.
Genevieve: Uh, no, not at all, I just didn't know that you knew where I lived. Oh, uh, but it would have been the news report when Colin had his accident, right?
Jack: I understand the two of you have decided to make your separation permanent.
Genevieve: How do you know that? Oh, Jill.
Jack: Well, it's probably not my place, but you're new in town, and I thought maybe you could use a shoulder.
Genevieve: Hmm. Would you think less of me if I told you that I feel less like crying and an awful lot more like celebrating?
Jack: Not at all. As a matter of fact, I came prepared.
Genevieve: (Laughs) Great.
Phyllis: (Whispering) "Avery... Bailey... Clark."
Avery: Well, I have a lot to do for the new trial.
Nick: So it's a go?
Avery: Preliminaries start in a few days. I'll keep you posted.
Sharon: Avery, thank you so much.
Nick: (Sighs)
Sharon: Is Faith all right?
Nick: Faith's fine. Noah convinced me to come. And when I say "Convinced," I mean he practically ripped my head off.
Sharon: Well, he shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry.
Nick: You look good. You seem positive.
Sharon: Well, there is good news about the trial. And even before that, I've learned to adjust. What else could I do?
Nick: Dad said you have a lot of support with Avery and Sam.
Sharon: It's different with them. Obviously, we don't have a troubled past. Speaking of which, I remember you telling me that Noah and Faith would be better off if I'd really died.
Nick: I went too far.
Sharon: Okay. Well, at the time, you were in shock, and you were furious. You had every right to be.
Nick: The hardest thing for me to understand...
Sharon: Was... me letting you think that I died?
Nick: How you could let your kids think that.
Sharon: It's a good thing, really, that you don't know what it feels like to be made to feel worthless, like you have nothing to offer anyone, least of all your children. Now you can say that I should have known better. But I didn't, and that's not an excuse. That's just the way it was. An opportunity presented itself to run, and you know what? It seemed like, at the time, a blessing to let everyone cut their ties with me. I'm sure it was really difficult for you... (Sighs) To just... take care of Noah and Faith at the time when I know you were really angry with me, and I really appreciate you doing that. I know that you didn't do that for me, but I appreciate it anyway. And I'm very sorry for everything that's happened.
Nick: (Sighs) I gotta go.
Genevieve: Thank you.
Jack: To freedom.
(Glasses clink)
Genevieve: Mm. You are so thoughtful. You remembered my favorite label, coming by to cheer me up. (Chuckles)
Jack: Even though it turns out that wasn't necessary, huh?
Genevieve: Well, I'm not exactly... new to this, uh, freedom. Colin and I have been leading separate lives for, I know, years now. (Chuckles)
Jack: I'm not exactly a stranger to divorce, and it does change things. Formalizing it, legalizing it, changes your outlook.
Genevieve: It opens you up to new possibilities.
Jack: You know, the more time I spend with you, the more I think your soon-to-be-ex is a fool.
Genevieve: The more time I spend with you, the less I think of old what's-his-name.
Jack: (Laughs)
Genevieve: (Laughs)
Jack: So tell me, have you been getting around Genoa City?
Genevieve: Uh, not really. What I've seen I do like. Um, it's just-- I don't know, it's been such a hot summer, and I've had a lot to do here, settling into the house. Um, I don't know. I suppose I'm kind of cocooning. (Chuckles)
Jack: What, alone?
Genevieve: Isn't that how it's normally done? (Laughs)
Jack: Well, you know, to each his own, I suppose, but I just prefer to do my cocooning with a friend.
Genevieve: I'll have to try that sometime. (Chuckles) I just don't seem to have too many friends here in Genoa City.
Jack: I would be happy to oblige you.
Genevieve: That's very generous of you.
Jack: Not at all. Um... what do you say we take this celebration upstairs?
Jack: Is something wrong?
Genevieve: I don't know that I can do this. (Chuckles) I'm sorry.
Jack: Oh, no, that's-- that's okay. We don't need to rush anything.
Genevieve: It's-- it's not that I'm not ready. I just... I don't know. I don't know that I'm ever gonna be... ready. I...I've never slept with anyone but Colin.
Colin: Genevieve was served with the divorce papers this morning.
Jill: You're still gonna go through with this?
Colin: Yes, but there's something I wanted to tell you. Genevieve and I slept together.
Jill: (Sighs)
Colin: Before all of this, uh...
Jill: All of what?
Colin: Before I asked for a divorce.
Jill: How long before?
Colin: That night.
Jill: Give me a little credit here, okay? You're just doing damage control because you know Genevieve told you I already know you slept with her.
Colin: (Sighs) (Sighs) Now that you mention it, uh, Genevieve may have brought this up. (Sighs) Uh, Jill, I am sorry that I've hurt you again.
Jill: It's a little late to worry about hurting me, huh?
Colin: I love you. And with all... with all that's gone down, I know that you're not probably too proud of the fact that you still have some love for me. Given all the crap I've pulled, if you still feel that way, chances are that's not gonna change. Let's face it, we're meant to be together.
Jill: Then how come it was so easy for you to fall into bed with her?
Colin: This doesn't make any sense to you, and it's not gonna make a whole lot of sense to me, but at the time, I asked myself, "What the hell am I doing here?" (Sighs) And when it was over, I knew what it meant. I'd said good-bye.
Genevieve: I was really young when we got married. Um... (Scoffs) Naive doesn't really begin to describe it. (Chuckles) Oh, if I told you the lines that he used on me, you'd laugh. Of course, I didn't. I just hung on every word.
Jack: You wouldn't be the first to make that mistake.
Genevieve: I think the real mistake was in staying once I... I really knew what the situation was. But... we had kids by then who needed a father. That's what I thought. And I don't know. I guess there's, like, a-a stubborn part of me that was still in love with him and just kept hoping and... (Scoffs)
Jack: Oh, yeah, sure. I-I think that's all understandable.
Genevieve: I... I think it's cowardly. If I had left when I should have, if I'd had that strength, and I took my daughter with me, she might still be alive today.
Jack: I-I'm--I'm so sorry.
Genevieve: Jill didn't tell you that--
Jack: No, no, no.
Genevieve: Hmm. Her name was Samantha.
Jack: Samantha.
Genevieve: Mm, yeah. There she is.
Jack: She's beautiful.
Genevieve: Yeah, she really was. Well, I don't want to get into telling that story right now. That's not good. (Laughs) Oh, anyway, after, um, after that happened, after she died, I think that... (Sighs) I just kind of shut down. And I withdrew from Colin and from the boys. (Sighs) And I guess that went on for years. Years passed, and... here I am. I've never had a lover. I've had a husband. Oh, that's so embarrassing. (Laughs)
Jack: No, no, no, no. I-I hope nothing I've done made you feel that way. Now the more I know of your story, the more impressed I am with your resilience, with your strength. There is no more devastating loss, none. I know people who have suffered this and been destroyed by it.
Genevieve: Thank you.
Jack: It is all the more remarkable the woman you have become today-- a fascinating, dynamic, strong woman, who has nothing to be embarrassed about.
Phyllis: Oh, my God.
Avery: I was hoping I'd run into you.
Adam: I have an appointment I have to get ready for.
Avery: What a coincidence. I have an appointment I'm preparing for, too, in court.
Adam: Excited. Ciao.
Avery: Sharon's new trial. It starts next week.
Nick: I have someone her who would really like to see you.
Jill: Colin, just because your wife is stupid enough to play all these games with you, please don't think I am.
Colin: Hey. I'm the idiot in this relationship, and I know it. I walked away from something great. I didn't know what I had. Well, that's over. The marriage is over. I won't be reviving it. You're the only woman I want.
Genevieve: So much of who I am has been defined by that man.
Jack: We're--we're gonna stop that right now, today. You are no longer Colin's wife or Colin's ex-wife even. You are your own woman who's charting her own course, who's carving her own path, who's making her own rules and hopefully, those rules will still allow for an occasional impromptu visit from a well-meaning friend.
Genevieve: You have an open invitation.
Jack: Well, thank you, Ma'am. Listen, I'm gonna get out of here, give you a little time alone.
Genevieve: No. Don't go. I think... I've been alone long enough. I think too long.
Jack: You sure you want me to stay?
Genevieve: Yeah. I'm sure.
Genevieve: Mm. (Sighs) Mm.
Noah: Hey, Jack, it's Noah. I've been rethinking your offer to make some music for Jabot, and I want to do it. I'm not gonna worry about what my family thinks. If they don't like it, too bad.
Sharon: My little girl, hi! Oh, come here.
Faith: Mommy.
Nick: Yeah.
Sharon: Mommy's right here, Baby. Hi! You've gotten so big, and you're so beautiful. Gosh, I've missed you so much. (Makes kissing sounds) Yeah. I had no idea that you were bringing her.
Nick: Noah was right-- you need to be a part of each other's lives, even if it's in less-than-perfect circumstances.
Faith: (Babbles)
Sharon: Well, thank you thank you. I won't read too much into that. I know it doesn't mean you forgive me.
Nick: Well, at least we're one step closer to understanding.
Faith: (Babbles)
Sharon: Yeah?
Avery: You'll be getting that subpoena I promised you soon.
Adam: I still don't get why you took Sharon's case. Your whole M.O. is about championing the underdog, isn't it? And in this town, there's no bigger underdog than me.
Avery: You?
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Avery: (Scoffs)
Adam: Sharon's facing one charge. They're coming at me. They're always coming at me from all directions.
Avery: Yes, but see, the key difference is, Sharon is innocent. I would never work for you.
Adam: I'm crushed, really.
Phyllis: Oh, my God, it's you. What are you doing here?
Next on "The Young and the Restless.
Nick: I'm gonna help the police prove that you killed Diane.
Jill: How could you get involved with this lunatic?
Jack: I didn't trash Colin when we talked about him earlier.
Phyllis: I'm afraid of my past coming back to haunt me.
