Episode # 9710 ~ Adam Offers Abby an Alibi

Provided By Suzanne
Proofread By Emma

Diane: A photograph captures the image of a person... but not the essence. Not surprising, since so few people reveal their true selves to the camera or the world. We fool ourselves into thinking we know someone. The truth is, people lie. Everyone has a secret... a question they don't want to be asked. It's no different in Genoa City. Diane: In fact, today, there's one question on everyone's mind. I wasn't prepared to have my life cut so viciously short. If my brains hadn't been bashed in, I'd be racking them, trying to figure out who's responsible for what happened to me. So many people wanted to see me like this. I cannot tell you which one of them did it. Diane: I do know I'm dead because of all of them. Life goes on as if my life never existed. I'm gone, brutally murdered. They get up, have their coffee, go to work. It makes you wonder, are they going on as if nothing happened because they're heartless, or because they're guilty?

Jack: Hey.

Nick: Hey.

Phyllis: Hi. Uh, any word on Kyle?

Jack: I found him. He's in a boarding school in Switzerland. I'm on my way there now.

Phyllis: I don't envy you having to tell Kyle about Diane.

Nick: Do the police have any leads?

Jack: Well, they questioned me.

Nick: You're a suspect?

Jack: Yeah, crazy, huh? I told Ronan Malloy that. He is now in charge of the murder investigation.

Phyllis: Ronan, wow. So they think you killed Diane over a custody dispute?

Jack: Well, that, and the fact that she sent me a text right before she died asking me to meet her in the park.

Phyllis: She sent me the same text.

Jack: Well, then be prepared to hear from Malloy. Listen, I gotta head to the airport.

Phyllis: Hey, Jack, good luck with Kyle.

Nick: I hope he's okay.

Jack: Thanks.

Phyllis: That was good. That was smooth. Smooth.

Nick: Are you nervous about talking to the cops? Because you seem a little...

Phyllis: What, freaked out? I don't know, murders do that to me, you know? Especially when it's someone I've known.

Nick: You and Diane weren't exactly close.

Phyllis: We weren't close, but the park that she was murdered in is close. I mean, we take our kids there in the stroller for ice cream. (Sighs) It's unsettling.

Diane: Phyllis... you've never been afraid of anything. What's really got you so shaken up? While Phyllis is suddenly preoccupied with thoughts of my murder, others are so wrapped up in their lives, they couldn't care less that I was senselessly bludgeoned to death. Only Victoria could take narcissism to such heights.

Victoria: (Sighs)

Victoria: (Sighs) Billy, why did you leave without saying anything after we... I-I just don't understand, so would you just please call me? Thank you.

(Doorbell rings)

Victor: I'm sorry to barge in, Sweetheart, but I wanted to get here as quickly as possible.

Victoria: Is something wrong? Is it Mom?

Victor: No, your mother's fine. It's about Diane’s murder. The police talked to me about it. I'm sure they'll come and talk to you and Nicholas about it, as well.

Victoria: Why?

Victor: Because Diane’s lawsuit against your mother is a matter of public record, so it wouldn't be too difficult to convince the D.A. that you and Nicholas might have gone after Diane because she filed the lawsuit against your mom.

Victoria: I don't have anything to hide.

Diane: Nothing, Victoria? You really ready to bare all? I wonder if your sister, "The Naked Heiress," feels the same. In this case, I don't think so.

Abby: Can I get another orange juice, Eddie, please?

Adam: Well, somebody didn't get their beauty sleep last night.

Abby: Go away, Adam.

Adam: I bet there were a lot of people in town tossing and turning last night, thinking about Diane...

Abby: (Clears throat)

Adam: Dead in the park. It begs the question, who has the key to this mystery?

[Abby remembering]

Diane: This little key unlocks a powerful secret, one that could take down your entire family.

Abby: Ooh, I'm scared.

Diane: You ought to be. It unlocks a safe, and in that safe is your video, the one of you confessing you're the one who ran Tucker down.

Abby: Give that to me.

Diane: Oh, don't you worry now. No one'll know that Mommy took the blame because you were drunk out of your spoiled, self-absorbed mind... not until I want them to.

Abby: (Grunts) I don't know anything about Diane’s murder. (Scoffs)

Adam: The police are probably gonna want to question you all the same.

Abby: Cool. I'll tell them the truth.

Adam: Exactly what I told them-- that I was here last night at the bar, just like you.

Abby: What?

Adam: We could help each other.

Abby: You want to be each other's alibis?

Adam: That's the truth.

Abby: (Scoffs)

Adam: We were here, Abby, all night at the bar.

Adam: Don't you remember?

Abby: I'm not sure.

Diane: Some claim they don't remember. Others would like to forget. Maybe it was the argument "Lover boy" and I had the night I was killed that's bothering him.

[Tucker remembering]

Tucker: (Breathing heavily) What do you want?

Diane: The satisfaction of knowing I can ruin your life. (Gasps) Wait, I have that.

Tucker: If this is about releasing that videotape of Abby, I'm warning you--

Diane: Oh, don't bother doing that. I'm not afraid of you.

Tucker: You should be.

Diane: All this chest-pounding for a spoiled brat who made it her life's mission to break up you and the love of your life.

Tucker: Is that what this is about? I chose Ashley over you, now you want to trash my life, hers, and Abby’s?

Diane: And you'll never know when it's gonna happen.

Tucker: You... (Sighs) God, I wish I'd never laid eyes on you.

Diane: You laid more than your eyes on me, didn't you?

Tucker: Biggest mistake of my life. I'd do anything to erase it.

Diane: I bet the only person who regrets it more is Ashley.

Ashley: I'm gonna pick up some of my things. I'm gonna-- I'm gonna stay at the club for a while.

Tucker: Oh, Ashley--

Ashley: No, don't, please.

Tucker: No, no, wait. Just talk to me.

Ashley: Listen, for months, I told Abby that she was wrong about you. I said you would never do that to me, that you would never have an affair with Diane.

Tucker: I can't tell you how sorry I am.

Ashley: And then you just stood there, and you let me defend you. Do you realize that she never would have hit you, that I never would have gone to jail if you had just been honest with me?

Tucker: I get that. I get that now. Just--just please-- will you just let me try to make things right for you and Abby? Just let me try. Can you... can you just forgive me?

Ashley: I don't know if I can.

Tucker: So you agree with Katherine-- we should end the marriage.

(Telephone rings)

Ashley: Hello? Yes, he's here. Okay, we'll both be here.

Ashley: That was Ronan Malloy. He's coming over to talk to us about Diane’s murder.

Victor: I didn't mean to upset you, Sweetheart.

Victoria: (Sighs) Dad, you know, it's just-- it's been a rough day.

Victoria: (Sighs)

Victor: Was Billy here?

Victoria: I don't understand him at all.

Victor: What's there to understand, Sweetheart? He has let you down over and over again. Why do you let him?

Victoria: I love him.

Victor: (Sighs) I don't think he's worthy of your love, okay?

Victoria: (Sighs) Dad, I just-- I wish things could go back to the way that they were. (Sighs)

Diane: You can't go back, Victoria. Things have changed... forever. Not just for me-- things are different for Nick, too. My death affected him. How? You'll have to ask Nick.

Phyllis: Uh, did you go over those ideas that I had for the next cover?

Nick: (Sighs) Yeah, you know what? I didn't really like any of them, actually.

Phyllis: Great. I guess the idea of the police questioning me about Diane’s murder has me off my game.

Nick: I don't know why.

Phyllis: Well, I've hated Diane for, well, forever. And she sent me a text to meet her right before she got herself murdered.

Nick: She probably sent a lot of people texts that night.

[Nick remembering]

Nick: So you invite me out here to tell me you're gonna stop threatening my family?

Diane: I'm gonna bring every single one of you to your knees and enjoy doing it.

Nick: I am so sick of your threats.

Diane: Calling Daddy?

Nick: I'm gonna call the D.A. I bet he'd love to hear how you're blackmailing the Newmans.

Diane: Give me that!

(Cell phone hits bridge)

Diane: (Grunts)

Nick: In fact, she sent me one.

Phyllis: She sent you a text?

Nick: But I ignored it, like you did, right?

[Phyllis remembering]

Diane: (Gasps) Oh! (Sighs) Phyllis. You startled me.

Phyllis: I startled you? You sent me a message to meet you here, which--I'm shocked after the chat that we had at the coffeehouse.

Diane: We have unfinished business to discuss.

Phyllis: We have years of "Unfinished business."

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, I ignored it, too. I didn't go to meet her. But Ronan will probably want to talk to both of us about that.

Nick: I'm not worried about it.

Phyllis: Neither am I. But I think we should both have alibis. It would make things a lot easier.

Abby: Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't order that.

Adam: Mm, there's a study out-- caffeine improves your memory. Maybe it will help you remember a few things that happened last night.

Abby: I didn't say it was a complete blank... exactly.

Adam: So then you'll remember that I was here with a woman last night? 5'6", 5'7", brown hair, brown eyes?

Abby: Yeah, yeah, you know, I am always interested in your sleazy pickups.

Adam: Right, when you're not distracted with an open bar tab.

Abby: I think your problems are a little bigger-- massive hangover, murder suspect. Yeah, you win that one. You do.

Adam: G.C.P.D. ain't got nothin' on me. And I have an alibi, Abby, which is one more alibi than you have got. However, you could have one if you vouched for me. We could help one another.

Abby: I don't really think I need your help.

Diane: Abby, we both know you're hiding something. I wonder if Adam can tell? I could forgive them all for what they did to me... if it weren't for Kyle. My son has no mother. Jack has to tell him. I can't imagine anything worse... unless he's the one who took me away from him. That would be a kind of evil I can't even describe.

Jack: (Sighs)

Tucker: (Sighs)

Ashley: Detective Malloy should be here soon.

Tucker: You think we're suspects?

Ashley: Everybody knows how I hated Diane. It's on record.

Tucker: Well, if he's, uh, talkin' to people who didn't like Diane, he'll be talkin' to half the town, including me. When I found out that she told you about us and she was threatening to take that videotape of Abby’s confession to the police, I felt like...

Tucker: I don't think anybody was more pissed off at her than I was.

[Ashley remembering]

Diane: You came.

Ashley: Yeah, to tell you that I think you're a liar.

Diane: Is that why you slapped me? Tucker's an amazing lover. Of course, I gave as good as I got, but that thing he does on your ear... (Chuckles) You know. He--right before he--

Ashley: Shut up!

Diane: Poor Abby. She tried to tell you what a two-timing liar Tucker is. But you didn't believe her. You must feel like the worst mother ever. And guess what? You are.

Ashley: I despised Diane just as much as you did.

(Knock on door)

Tucker: Detective, come on in.

Ashley: Hello. You wanted to speak with us?

Ronan: Yes, I do, to both of you. So where were you guys last night?

Abby: (Sighs)

Adam: I bet Eddie told you the same thing he told me-- he saw you last night. He just doesn't remember when or for how long. I could.

Abby: You know that there is not enough vodka in Wisconsin to ever make me lie for you.

Adam: But you wouldn't be lying. I was here.

Abby: Why don't you get your one-night tramp to back you up? You know, she could go down with you when they find out that you're guilty.

Adam: (Inhales sharply) Yeah, okay, well, I'm concerned. Who would be standing by you, then? Oh... no one.

Abby: (Scoffs)

Adam: Yeah, that might come back to bite you in the end.

Victoria: (Sighs) Where is that-- I'm looking for that file. Uh, let's see here.

Victor: Sweetheart, we don't have to do this right now, okay?

Victoria: (Sighs) I'm sorry, Dad. I'm--I'm really sorry, but between Billy leaving the way that he did, and you telling me that the police might want to question me, I just, uh... (Sighs)

Victor: I understand everything. I'm going to go work out on the heavy bag, get rid of some of my frustration, all right?

Victoria: (Sighs) All right. I'll see you. Mwah. Mm.

Victor: It will all work out, okay? Don't you worry.

Victoria: Right.

Diane: Nothing to hide, huh, Victoria?

Diane: This is too good to be true, watching them all make up lies so Ronan doesn't figure out they were in the park the night I was murdered. Almost makes being dead worth it. I can't wait to hear what's next.

Ronan: I was asking the two of you where you were last night when Diane Jenkins was murdered.

Tucker: We were here, together.

Ronan: The two of you, all night?

Tucker: We're newlyweds.

Ronan: Oh, well, congratulations. Ashley, is that true? Were you here all night with your husband?

Ashley: Very true.

Diane: If the truth is supposed to illuminate, why does Genoa City feel like such a dark, dark place right now?

Nick: Hey, you know something?

Phyllis: Hmm?

Nick: Except for when you went home to check on Lucy and Summer and I went to get ice cream...

Phyllis: Right.

Nick: We were together last night.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, we were. I think that some people will still say that we had the opportunity.

Nick: If we had alibis, it wouldn't matter.

(Elevator door opens)

Phyllis: Hey, look at you. I was beginning to think that you were the "Take the liver and run" kind of guy.

Ronan: (Scoffs) That's good. Uh, new boss, but the same Phyllis, I see.

Nick: Brutally honest.

Phyllis: Yeah, well, I'm a journalist. We tell the truth.

Ronan: Right. So then you'll tell me the truth about where you were last night.

Phyllis: Of course. Here, working with Nick.

Ronan: The two of you, here? All night?

Phyllis: Yeah, just the two of us.

Ronan: Just the two of you, typing the night away, right?

Phyllis: Pretty much.

Ronan: May I? Your hand. Yeah. Well, those are beautiful. You must have gotten those done after your all-nighter.

Phyllis: No, before.

Ronan: Really? 'Cause they look fresh. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't leave town, either of you.

Phyllis: I didn't-- I didn't know what you were gonna say.

Nick: We just saved the guy a lot of time. There's no point in thinking of us as suspects.

Phyllis: I know. We don't have anything to hide.

Diane: At least Nick and Phyllis are smart enough to get alibis, unlike poor, dumb Abby.

Victor: Um, Ronan Malloy just questioned me.

Abby: I know. I have to watch out now he's coming my way? Adam gave me the memo. He wanted me to give him an alibi, like I would ever do anything for that skeezoid.

Victor: Why did he think you would?

Abby: Well, he said we'd be doing each other a favor. He claims we were here all night together.

Victor: Were you?

Abby: (Sighs) I was pretty freaked out about Diane having that video of me confessing, so I did come here to the bar to have a drink, and I don't really remember much after that.

Victor: Mm-hmm. So he was trying to take advantage of that by asking you to lie for him? Is that it?

Abby: Yeah, he said he would cover for me, too.

Victor: Would he have to? I mean, were you here last night when Diane was killed?

Ronan: This is exactly my question for her.

Victor: Didn't I answer all of your questions, Detective?

Ronan: Actually, these questions are for your daughter. Did you?

Abby: No, I didn't see Diane last night. I was here at the bar all night.

Ronan: Here, all night?

Abby: Yeah.

Ronan: Anybody verify that for you?

Abby: Um, Eddie. He was working.

Ronan: (Chuckles) Eddie. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. Hey, Eddie. Detective Malloy with the G.C.P.D. was she here last night-- Miss Newman?

Eddie: Yes, Sir, uh, I served her a couple drinks, and then she had a few more, and finally, I cut her off.

Ronan: You had to cut her off. Really? What time was that?

Eddie: Uh, I was pretty slammed last night. I never really had the chance to look at a clock.

Ronan: So you don't know what time it was at all? Okay, thanks, Eddie.

Victor: Detective, obviously, there were a lot of people here last night. I'm sure you can find someone to place her here at the time of Diane’s killing.

Ronan: Well, I hope that you find that someone, or else we're gonna have a lot more to talk about.

Victor: Hmm.

Diane: The police are putting so much effort into finding out who that nail belongs to. We have a pretty good idea already, don't we? Who else would wear such a tacky color on a phony nail?

[Phyllis remembering]

Diane: You want to finish things, Phyllis? Bring it on.

Phyllis: I think you're gonna be sorry that you called me here.

Diane: I know I was sorry the day we met. But I can walk away from you... just like Jack did... just like Nick did, and every other man you've ever slept with.

Phyllis: Are you really gonna go there, Diane? Are you really going there?

Diane: But your poor kids. They're stuck with you, aren't they? That is, when they see you, since you're so tied up at work with Nick. You know, that was some layout I saw on your desk when I walked in the other day. It's a good thing I captured it on my camera phone.

Phyllis: You're a liar. You're lying.

Diane: Maybe I'll post it on Viewclick. That's a good idea. And then maybe someday, Summer could see it.

Phyllis: Oh, I swear to you, if you hurt my kids--I swear to you, if you hurt my kids, you will be sorry. I swear to you, you will be sorry!

Diane: Oh, threats! Nice. Maybe I should capture this on my phone, as well.

Phyllis: (Grunts)

Diane: I have a phone call to make.

Diane: The autopsy tells how I died. But there's much more in that report, some of it very interesting. The rich and powerful Tucker McCall. Well, I may not have your money, but I sure as hell have the power to destroy your life, your precious Ashley’s, and that spoiled brat daughter of hers. I'm gonna make sure the whole world knows what liars you all are.

[Tucker remembering]

Tucker: I'll kill you before I let you hurt them.

Diane: (Laughs) Look at you. You can barely stand. (Grunts)

Tucker: (Grunts) (Groans) (Grunts) (Breathing heavily)

Ronan: Thank you.

Diane: "A small silver key was found in the victim's mouth." Now... who would put a key in my mouth? And why?

[Abby remembering]

Abby: How much do you want?

Diane: You people born with money-- you think you can buy your way out of anything?

Abby: Oh, you don't want any money? What do you want?

Diane: Mm, just the sheer pleasure of knowing that every morning, you'll wake up, and you'll wonder, is this the day that Diane’s gonna blow my world apart? And then one day, kaboom! (Grunts)

Diane: You should've taken Adam up on his offer, Abby. Get off me! Everybody else has somebody covering for them.

Abby: (Grunting) Give it to me! Give it to me!

Diane: Maybe you did the right thing, 'cause all those lies are gonna unravel.

Nick: (Grunts)

Diane: Get your hands off me, or I'll be the one pressing charges!

Nick: Shut up. You shut up. I am sick of you threatening my family. I'm telling you right now, I'm not gonna let it happen anymore. I will kill you before I let you hurt them again. Do you hear me? I'll kill you.

Diane: You get your hands off me! Let me go, Nick, let go! People really ought to be more careful what they say. Never know who's listening.

[Ashley remembering]

Ashley: You of all people are accusing me of being a bad mother?

Diane: You should have just let Abby take responsibility for what she did to Tucker. Then there never would have been a video of her confessing.

Ashley: She's trying to do the right thing. That's why she made the video, and now you're using it against her.

Diane: (Clicks tongue) I think that's what they call irony.

Ashley: You are such a bitch!

Diane: (Grunts) (Sighs)

Ashley: I'm not finished with you, Diane!

Diane: That's some impression on my arm. Somebody had to grab me awfully hard to put it there, somebody who went to Harvard.

Adam: Elena, hey, this is Adam. That's right, last night at the Athletic Club. Listen, I need to, uh, I need to talk to you about our time together.

Jack: (Sighs)

Diane: Going off to look for Nikki, huh? That really why you were leaving town, Victor? Adam set you up for my murder.

Victor: Why should I believe you?

Diane: Isn't that a game the two of you play? Adam sets you up for a crime you didn't commit, then you set him up for one? It's his turn.

Victor: If you know about that, then you are in on it.

Diane: I was.

Victor: Why would I trust you?

Diane: Because I'm here. I cared about you, Victor. And at the very least, I thought you cared about Kyle.

Victor: He's a very nice boy. He deserves a better mother.

Diane: Then help us both.

Victor: You've not shown me anything that proves what you're saying is true.

Diane: It's there.

Victor: It's where?

Diane: Under the rock. Adam stole it from you. He planted it there. Do you believe me now?

Victor: Yeah.

Diane: Then you'll help me?

Victor: Not in a million years.

Diane: You son of a-- (Singsong voice) Round and round it goes... just who killed me... nobody knows. Someone once said "The path to the truth can be found in the spaces between the lies." When the lies become so numerous the path ceases to exist, the truth becomes as elusive as the sun on a cloudy day. Why do the good citizens of Genoa City want to cast themselves into such darkness? Are they afraid of what'll be revealed by the light? Is that why they're attempting to eliminate the space that Ronan needs to see his way to the truth? There may be a lot of you-- all with your secrets, all trying to throw the good detective off-- but eventually, the lies'll be swept away, and a clear path to the truth ill open up. They say, "Dead men tell no tales." Whoever said that... never met me.

Next on "The Young and the Restless"...

Victor: Would you like me to teach you a little, or what?

Genevieve: That'd be great.

Lily: I just thought that I would tell you I'm gonna be filing for a divorce.

Nina: You are the most inhuman, unfeeling person I have ever known.

Ronan: Hey, hey, keep your voice down.
