Episode # 9699 ~ Adam Lies to Phyllis About the Missing Evidence

Provided By Suzanne
Proofread By Emma

Jack: Sam. Jack Abbott. We met at the courthouse.

Sam: Sure. How are you?

Jack: Hey, I'm glad we ran into each other again. I've been meaning to thank you for looking out for Sharon.

Sam: Well, it seems that's a pretty big club-- looking out for Sharon.

Jack: Well, not as big a club as you might first guess. She wouldn't be spending 30 years behind bars if it weren't for "The Mustache."

Sam: I-I'm sorry?

Jack: Victor Newman's trying to pass himself off as Sharon's champion. Trust me, he's on no one's side but his own.

Victor: I'm very concerned about Sharon's mental state.

Nick: How so?

Victor: She is pushing away the people who care about her who she needs the most. She even told Noah not to come to her sentencing.

Nick: Well, I'm actually glad she did that.

Victor: Well, then she's also telling that Sam Gibson fellow to not waste his time. He wanted to lend his support. She told him to go home.

Nick: What do you know about this guy?

Victor: I had him checked out. In his hometown, he seems to be known for his honesty and integrity... which doesn't mean that he couldn't be corrupted if he stays with the kind of company he's keeping right now.

Sharon: Um, there must be some mistake. I'm looking for Adam Newman.

Diane: Yeah, no. I-I heard you. And like I told you, he's not here right now, but I'd be happy to take a message for you.

Sharon: Who is this, please?

Diane: Well, anybody who really knew Adam would know who this is.

Sharon: Do you work with him?

Diane: No, but I'd be happy to play secretary and take that message, since I'll be seeing him here later tonight.

Adam: So where'd you get the idea that I had evidence to clear Sharon?

Phyllis: Oh, I think you forgot. Okay, um, I'll refresh your memory. Uh, remember when we went to Thailand? Remember that?

Adam: Mm, how could I forget?

Phyllis: Yeah, that was super fun, super fun.

Adam: Mm, time of my life.

Phyllis: Yeah, absolute-- me, too. Me, too. And we were running around Thailand trying to find the memory card from Sharon's camera? You remember that? And, you know, that had the audio to prove that she tried to save Skye, not kill her?

Adam: Yeah, I remember you bought dozens of memory cards in Thailand, and those memory cards had been erased, so it was an exercise in futility.

Phyllis: That's very funny, because just the other day, you stated the exact opposite. You said, I believe... "It isn't a dead end." That's what you said. You even convinced Noah of the same thing.

Adam: I was wrong.

Phyllis: Too bad. Poor Sharon. Funny, you know, I just got off the phone with my friend Emmett. Do you remember him? He's the guy that I hired to go through the memory cards. He said he was with you when you restored the audio on that memory card to prove that Sharon was innocent.

Phyllis: Busted.

Adam: Emmett's mistaken.

Phyllis: No, he seemed pretty sure that those were Skye and Sharon's voices on the memory card.

Adam: He's met neither Sharon nor Skye. I was the one who told him it was their voices. I was wrong. It was wishful thinking. I was hoping it would be them. I was headed into the D.A.'s office to play it for him, and I listened to it again. I realized that it wasn't Sharon, and it wasn't Skye.

Phyllis: So it was two other women hanging off the edge of a volcano?

Adam: Their voices were garbled. My head told me what I wanted to hear.

Phyllis: Okay, well, maybe you need a second opinion. And I know the sound of Skye and Sharon's voices.

Adam: They weren't their voices.

Phyllis: Oh, o-okay. Well, you know, I'd love to listen to it. Why don't you play me the track?

Adam: I've wasted enough time here already, Phyllis.

Phyllis: Okay, just give it to me. No problem. You don't have to waste any more time. I'll listen to it. Where's the card?

Adam: I don't know.

Phyllis: Is it in your safe? Is it in your underwear drawer, Adam?

Adam: Being that the memory card is worthless, it doesn't matter where it is.

Phyllis: So... this is the deal-- you... were trying to prove Sharon's innocence when she was presumed dead, right? And now... when she's alive, and she desperately needs proof of her innocence, and--and you had it in your hot little hands, all of a sudden, it's worthless? You know, I think I can guess that--

Adam: I think you can, too.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Adam: I bet you can concoct entire stories out of thin air, like you do so often to sell these rags of yours. I mean, you have to curry favor with your boss, right? I mean, now that Sharon is back in town, it's gotta be rather difficult to get Nicholas' attention.

Phyllis: Ohh. Oh. (Sighs) Pardon me. That--that hurts. That was really low. (Grunts) (Whispers) Ouch.

Adam: Phyllis?

Phyllis: (Normal voice) Yeah?

Adam: You have been here for too long. It ain't good for you.

Phyllis: Is that a threat, Adam?

Adam: Thank you for proving my point for me. You see threats and crimes and conspiracies where there are none. I believe your job is to write an editorial on today's society. Instead, you, my dear, have turned into a paranoid busybody. Why don't you just go full tilt? Get your rocker and shawl and hang out on the front porch and scowl at the neighbors.

Phyllis: Well, I'm gonna start writing my story. Thank you. You've given me some-- some good material. I really appreciate it. Um, it's sort of writing itself. Uh, you can add anything, if you'd like, like... where's the memory card?

Adam: Okay. Oops.

Phyllis: Wow. Wow, wow, wow. (Sighs)

Phyllis: You are not going to believe the news that I have.

Jack: Oh, Victor was too clever by half. He spirits Skye away in his private jet to Hawaii, sets her with an offshore bank account, thinks no one will be the wiser. He--

Sam: Sir, I-I-I appreciate you trying to get me caught up on the history. I do. But I think the best thing I can do for Sher-- uh, for Sharon is to just focus on what she needs right now.

Jack: I guarantee you, she doesn't need Victor Newman. He helped Sharon for his own reasons.

Sam: I'm pretty sure I got his number.

Jack: With all due respect, you wouldn't be the first person to think they could take what Victor's offering, stay on his good side, and not get caught in the cross fire of his various feuds. Sharon thought she was safe, too. I think you know how that worked out for her.

Sam: Yeah.

Nick: So you're gonna help Sharon with her appeal?

Victor: I will do everything I can. I'm sure so will you.

Nick: Within certain limits. I'm not gonna be the one that Sharon leans on, not this time.

Victor: Hmm. I see.

Nick: Now I do have the magazine...

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nick: So I can keep Sharon's story front and center. I can challenge the D.A.'s version of what went down. Phyllis thinks she might be on to something interesting.

Victor: Really?

Nick: Yeah. You know how Adam was pretty relentless in trying to prove Sharon's innocence...

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nick: Even after she was presumed dead? Phyllis thinks he was on the right track and that he found something. He's just not sharing it.

Victor: Keep me posted, okay?

Sharon: I really need to speak with Adam, and he's not answering his phone, so could you tell me where I might find him?

Diane: Well, I'm not sure I should give you that information. It could be he's intentionally avoiding you.

Sharon: Would you give him a message for me?

Diane: Now that I don't mind doing. You see, Adam is-- is pretty important to me, but I'm not the jealous type.

Sharon: Tell him that Sharon called, and I really need to speak to him.

Diane: Sharon, wai-- please don't hang-- (Sighs) Damn.

Adam: What are you still doing here? You're supposed to be in the middle of begging my father to take Kyle off your hands.

Diane: Okay, all right. I'm on my way out. Relax. Sharon called.

Adam: When?

Diane: Just now. She wants to see you.

Adam: What else did she say?

Diane: Nothin'. But it sounded kind of urgent. You might want to head over there.

Phyllis: Adam is lying.

Nick: And this is news?

Phyllis: Adam had proof that Sharon tried to save Skye.

Nick: How do you know that?

Phyllis: Because Emmett was with him when he found out.

Nick: Emmett is the forensic photography expert.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, the guy that I hired to go through the memory cards-- Malcolm's friend. Adam found the memory card and then he asked Emmett to help him with it. Okay, so here's what Emmett told me-- that you couldn't really see anything, but you heard the voices. And Emmett distinctly told me that Sharon was trying to save Skye. She didn't want her to die.

Nick: My God.

Phyllis: I know. But get this-- now Adam is saying, "No, it wasn't them. It wasn't Sharon and Skye." And he's saying he doesn't know where the memory card is. He's defensive, and he's desperate to cover his tracks.

Nick: I don't get it. Adam went around the globe trying to prove Sharon's innocence. He finally finds something that might help her, but he doesn't want anyone to know about it? How does that make sense?

Phyllis: I think that Adam is trying to punish Sharon.

Sharon: (Sighs) You got my message.

Adam: Diane said it was urgent.

Sharon: Diane?

Adam: What?

Sharon: I just didn't know who I was talking to. She was in your hotel room?

Adam: Mm. We were discussing business.

Sharon: Business.

Adam: Sharon, this can't be why you called me down here.

Sharon: I'm about to go away to prison for 30 years, and... I have no right to ask that you would-- I mean, especially after I told you to move on without me, but it just seems as though you have.

Adam: You think I-- you think I moved on with Diane?

Sharon: No one would blame you.

Adam: Never... happened.

Sharon: Adam, you thought I was dead. Maybe you needed someone to lean on.

Adam: Diane means nothing to me. It was just business. She helped me get on the Newman board. I gave her a place to crash when my father kicked her out. That's it.

Sharon: (Sighs) She implied otherwise.

Adam: There has been nobody else in my life or in my heart but you since New Orleans. I know you believe me.

Sharon: I just... I have to ask.

Adam: What?

Sharon: How do you feel about me now, Adam? Is there anything left between us?

Jack: You saw Adam in the courtroom-- cool as ice while the judge gave Sharon five more years for an escape that he planned and executed. Watch out for him.

Sam: Well, according to you, I need to watch out for all the Newmans, right?

Jack: Adam is different. Adam is diabolical, and that is not an exaggeration.

Sam: Okay. Well, I think I'm gonna get going. I do appreciate the beer, Sir.

Jack: But not the advice?

Sam: You know, Jack, if there's anything I learned from growing up in a small town, it's that you never get in the middle of a family feud. And if both the Hatfields and McCoys-- if they're trying to get Sharon out of prison, then I intend on gettin' along with all of 'em.

Jack: Well, good luck with that.

Sam: Be seein' you.

(Cell phone rings)

Jack: Hey, Kyle, you on your way? No, no, no. No, no, that's all right. Don't worry about it. You stay at practice as long as you have to. I got a surprise for you when you get here.

Diane: Thank you for making time for me.

Victor: You said Kyle was in trouble. What's going on?

Diane: I know you're gonna tell me that I should have known better, and you're right. I was an idiot to think I could handle Adam.

Victor: I'm not interested in your problems.

Diane: I know. And I'm not askin' for your mercy. I'm not. Believe me.

Victor: Any more than I believe in your honesty. You used Kyle as a ruse to get in-- in--in the door?

Diane: No. He needs your help, Victor. Just give me a minute to explain it, okay? You couldn't fix things for me with the S.E.C. like you promised, so I-I had to take a huge risk to try to protect myself. I'm afraid it's gonna backfire, and Adam's gonna want me dead. We both know he's capable of it. I have to leave town. I can't take Kyle. I want him to stay here with you. I know you're still furious with me for going along with Adam's plan, for helping him get a seat on your board.

Victor: And?

Diane: Please don't punish Kyle for that.

Victor: You would not abandon your boy. I know that.

Diane: I would do anything to protect him.

Victor: What are you saying? That Adam threatened your boy?

Diane: Adam still thinks I'm his ally. When he finds out that I've turned on him, things will change. Will he go after Kyle specifically? I don't know, but it would certainly be the best way to hurt me. Just like he went after Ashley and your unborn child to get back at you.

Victor: So you're turning against Adam now?

Diane: I've got a deal with the D.A. I signed a deposition that spells out Adam's involvement in the stock scam, how it was all his brilliant idea. It'll be entered into evidence when the grand jury convenes. Adam will be indicted...

Victor: (Sighs)

Diane: And I will have to go into hiding.

Victor: Let's find out.

Victor: (Sighs) This is Victor Newman. I'd like to speak with the D.A. kindly interrupt his meeting. Spencer, Diane Jenkins is with me right now, and she tells me that she turned state's evidence against my son Adam. Is that true? All right. Thank you. Yep, I'll be more discreet, certainly more than she was. Thank you.

Diane: Do you believe me now?

Victor: Something about this doesn't jive. Why would you be willing to turn state's evidence if you're so afraid of Adam?

Diane: I-I did that before Sharon came back.

Victor: So?

Diane: Well, clearly, you haven't been around your son much since that happened. He's--he's been acting very strangely. He's biting my head off for no reason. It's like he... like he's getting ready to snap. I don't want to be around when that happens, especially if something I did makes it happen.

Victor: Why don't you send Kyle to his father?

Phyllis: All right, think about it. You know, Adam went a little nuts when Sharon passed away. You remember?

Nick: Yeah.

Phyllis: I mean, breaking into the church through the belfry, livin' in her place surrounded by her things.

Nick: Till Dad kicked him out.

Phyllis: Exactly. Then he was all about, "Oh, we have to find out what happened at the volcano to save Sharon's name, to save her reputation," okay? So he does find it. Then Sharon miraculously rises from the dead. He races to the police station, and finds...

Nick: Sharon with her new boyfriend.

Phyllis: So Adam has been living his life as a monk in Sharon's honor-- I mean, a crazy monk, nonetheless, as a monk in Sharon's honor, I mean, there was probably still hay in her hair from rollin' around with this Sam the vet guy. I don't know. I just don't think that Adam would take that particularly well.

Nick: Well, there's "Not taking it well," and there's also letting Sharon rot in prison for 30 years.

Phyllis: Yeah, but with Adam, he probably thinks that she deserves it. I mean, this is Adam we're talking about, right? He acts like the victim. He's always the victim. I know. I know it's crazy, but it's Adam, right?

Nick: What do you think he did with the memory card?

Phyllis: There's no way to know. But even if we never find it, we can persuade our readers that it exists. And you know our readers love to hate Adam. So... we can give them reason to, can't we? With this, we can really give them reason to, and then we can add this new guy in, this Sam guy. That's sort of interesting. I don't know his last name. We can find out and get a picture of him.

Nick: Okay, hold on. Hold on. Just--just--hold on.

Phyllis: And I'll--

Nick: Let's-- let's think about this for one second, all right? (Sighs)

Adam: What you're sensing from me is regret, guilt.

Sharon: (Sighs) Don't feel guilty, Adam. You did everything you could, even when you thought I was gone forever.

Adam: (Sighs)

Sharon: I'm sorry I didn't reach out to you. And I'm sorry about...

Adam: (Sighs) About Sam?

Sharon: I hope you'll understand.

Adam: (Sighs) I think I do.

Sharon: I never meant to hurt you.

Victor: Isn't that the reason that you returned to Genoa City? So that Kyle could get to know his father?

Diane: It doesn't mean I'd ever want him living with Jack full-time.

Victor: Really? Why then?

Diane: The story of Jack's life is his obsession with Jabot. It means more to him than anything. We both know that. Now he's C.E.O. again. He's overseeing this big product launch. How long before Kyle falls by the wayside? I already see it happening.

Victor: I run a corporation much, much larger than Jack Abbott's little Jabot, okay?

Diane: Yes, but you're different. You've found a balance. When we were living here, you made time for Kyle. You made him feel special. You made him feel important. That's what I want for him. And if I can't do that, I want it to be you.

Victor: Where the hell was that sentiment last night when you told me you were sickened when I expressed interest in the welfare of your son?

Diane: Okay, maybe you haven't noticed that I've been under a little pressure here. I'm trying to dodge a federal indictment and your psychopathic son. I'm sorry if I lost my temper! Victor... do you want to know the real reason that I want Kyle to stay with you and not Jack? I know that Jack cannot protect him as well as you can. That's all that matters to me. I want him to be safe. Please, will you do this for me?

Victor: If I agree to do this, it ain't for your sake. It'll be for Kyle.

Jack: Hats off inside.

Kyle: Okay. Hey, I'm sorry I forgot to bring a change of clothes.

Jack: Hey, don't worry about it. I like seeing you with half the field on your uniform. That means you're working hard. So I haven't asked in a while, how's it going with that kid that was giving you a hard time?

Kyle: Sebastian?

Jack: Yeah.

Kyle: No, he's still a jerk. But I don't know, I found out his stepdad just moved out.

Jack: Wow. Well, that kind of shines a different light on it, huh?

Kyle: Yeah, maybe.

Jack: And how about you? How are you doing? A lot of changes going on in your life these days.

Kyle: Well, I'm fine.

Jack: But you're still worried about your mom.

Kyle: She says she's okay.

Jack: Well, she's made a few choices lately that haven't exactly gone the way she planned.

Kyle: Nothing ever seems to.

Jack: She trusts the wrong people sometimes. Eventually, she'll learn to stop doing that. Until she does, though, you know I am here for you if you need me for anything.

Kyle: Thanks, Dad.

Jack: You ready for your surprise?

Kyle: What is it?

Jack: Well, open it and find out.

Adam: I gotta admit, it's, uh, it's been a little hard coming to see you and having to face Sam.

Sharon: Well, I told him he should just go back to New Mexico, but, you know, he's worried about me.

Adam: Well, I'm glad that there was-- there was someone there for you.

Sharon: I was worried that you might be angry, that you might lash out.

Adam: You're the only one that really knows me, and you asked me if there's anything left between us. And there is.

Sharon: (Sighs)

Sharon: Sam, um, have you met Adam?

Sam: How you doin'?

Adam: I've been better. I've been meaning to thank you for, uh, looking out for Sharon, taking care of her.

Sam: Pleasure.

Adam: I'll leave you two alone to talk.

Sam: It's an interesting set of friends you got there.

Sharon: If you're talking about Adam--

Sam: No, no, no. That's not a friend of yours.

Sharon: You've been listening to the Newmans and the Abbotts.

Sam: I take my own measure on people.

Sharon: Well, I'll tell you one thing about Adam-- he does love me. He's the one person who stood by me when everyone who I thought who cared about me was shutting me out.

Sam: I definitely get the feeling after talking to people around town, their loyalties tend to shift, you know? You got caught in a game with some pretty big players, didn't you? All with different agendas, jockeying for power. I mean, it's-- it's no wonder you were so much happier mucking out stalls in some barn.

Sharon: Do you know what I would give to be there right now? But I was just hiding. I was pretending--

Sam: That's not the way I see it. The way I see it is, you being out there just gave you the opportunity to be who you really are.

Sharon: But I was keeping a lot of secrets. Here, I-- I don't have much, but at least I'm being honest.

Sam: I'm not gonna let you rot away in some prison. I'm not sure Genoa City's much better.

Phyllis: Are you gonna tell me I can't print this story?

Nick: You can do the story.

Phyllis: Really?

Nick: Yes.

Phyllis: Because it helps Sharon. It helps her, and that's what we want, right? We want to have her open her eyes to the kind of person that Adam is.

Nick: I actually love that.

Phyllis: Good. Then let me start typing.

Nick: Not yet. First, I want you to call Emmet. Tell him what Adam said about the memory card, get his response.

Phyllis: Okay. All right. I'll call Emmet, and I'll get some quotes on the record. We can discuss what a liar Adam is.

Victor: Whether or not I agree that this place would be the safest for Kyle to stay, Jack won't. He'll fight it.

Diane: (Scoffs) When has Jack ever come out on top when the two of you have gone up against each other?

Victor: So you're trying to even the score with him, is that it?

Diane: Not at all. My only concern is my son. It's bad enough that I have to do this to him. I just hope that you'll be able to help him understand why.

Victor: If I agree to this, it'll be under certain conditions.

Diane: Anything.

Victor: You are to tell no one about this. If I hear you have, the deal is off, got it?

Diane: Mm-hmm.

Victor: And you're not using the Kyle situation as leverage against Jack?

Diane: No, I would never do that.

Victor: Nor will you use him as a pawn, you got that? I'm doing this for Kyle's sake, not yours.

Diane: Agreed. I'm-- I'm so grateful. (Sighs)

Victor: I'll call Michael Baldwin, have him draw up some documents, okay?

Diane: Now?

Victor: Yeah, what's wrong with that?

Diane: Nothing. Nothing at all.

Victor: Michael, Victor. Uh, I need you to draw up some documents for me.

Kyle: Plane tickets to west Virginia?

Jack: Yeah, they have an overnight baseball camp there that's supposed to be amazing. All of the coaches are former pros.

Kyle: Seriously? (Chuckles) Wow!

Jack: Yeah, I think we could learn a whole lot.

Kyle: "We"?

Jack: Oh, did I forget to mention that part? It's a father-and-son camp.

Kyle: Are you kidding me? We're going to camp together?

Jack: Well, yeah, if you don't mind hanging out with your old man.

Kyle: This is awesome. That's so cool.

Jack: (Chuckles) Well, I'm glad you like it.

Victor: So here's a copy for you, for me, and for my lawyer.

Diane: Thank you.

Victor: Just sign it, please.

Diane: (Sighs) And it's, uh, ironclad?

Victor: Mm-hmm. In case you leave town, I become the guardian.

Diane: Or in the event that something happens to me.

Victor: Right. Now one other thing-- if I find out that this is an attempt to manipulate me, you're gonna have to deal with me, far worse than if you had to deal with my psychopathic son Adam, all right? (Signs agreement) Here you go.

Diane: Thank you.

Diane: (Sighs) (Clears throat)

Adam: What the hell did you tell Sharon when she called?

Diane: Who cares? Victor signed the custody agreement.

Adam: Already?

Diane: Now it's your turn. I want my son out of town before this hits the fan. Get it done.

Phyllis: Oh, my God, Nick.

Nick: Wow.

Phyllis: We've gone viral. This is crazy.

Nick: Thousands of hits already.

Phyllis: I know. You know what this means, that the next issue of "Restless Style" is going to break records. We haven't even written it yet.

Nick: This may have been the best decision I ever made, hiring you back.

Phyllis: I know, I think it was brilliant. It was a brilliant decision, hiring me back.

Nick: Hmm.

Phyllis: It's-- this is... fantastic. It's--it's good.

Nick: Yeah. I'm gonna call the printer, tell him to expect a larger run this time.

Phyllis: Yeah. Uh, you should do that. You should do that before the phones start, you know, ringing off the hook.

Nick: (Sighs)

Nick: (Drumming fingers on desk)

Sharon: This can't be true.

Leslie: Well, if it is, Adam had the proof of your innocence, and kept it to himself.

Sharon: Why would he do that?

Adam: Oh, we meet again.

Sam: Yeah. You should expect to see a lot of me, if you're gonna be around Sharon, because she's, uh, she's pretty important to me.

Adam: You do realize you're not helping her, right, just exacerbating the whole situation? You should go back to your ranch, or wherever you're from.

Sam: Actually, I'm a vet. Work with animals, all kinds of 'em-- big ones, small ones. Maybe it's the job training, you know, but I can tell a snake when I see one.

Next on "The Young and the Restless"...

Jack: If it's too early for you to get back to this stuff, I...

Tucker: I'm fine.

Sam: I'm not worried about Adam. I'm worried about you.

Adam: Sharon is where she is because of her own choices.
