Episode # 9698 ~ Sharon Receives Her Prison Sentence

Provided By Suzanne
Proofread By Emma

Leslie: Hey, Sharon. How you holding up?

Sharon: (Sighs) I wasn't ready to be sentenced the first time. I'm not ready now. But what choice do I have?

Leslie: None, unfortunately.

Sharon: I'm going away to prison for a long time. The only question is, how long?

Victor: Doctor Gibson, didn't realize you were still in town.

Sam: Well, I'd like to be in court when Sher--uh, when Sharon's sentenced. It's important that she knows I'm still in her corner.

Victor: Well, that's very nice of you. I'm sure it'll be a comfort to her. Have a nice day.

Sam: Yourself.

Adam: Have you been avoiding me?

Diane: No, I've been busy. What do you want?

Adam: What do I want? You know what I want. I want my father to spend the rest of his pathetic life behind bars in a cage.

Diane: Yikes! You act like we're on some kind of big timetable here.

Adam: Well, I just want to get this done before you decide to back out, either that, or get sucked into another scam.

Diane: You have a high opinion of me, I can tell.

Adam: Listen, I'm headed over to the courthouse now. I'll, uh, I'll hook up with you afterwards.

Diane: Fine. You have fun at, uh, Sharon's going away party.

Diane: (Sighs)

Phyllis: The media was not allowed inside the courtroom.

Nick: (Sighs)

Phyllis: Thank you.

Nick: Thank you. So how come you're not outside ready to pounce?

Phyllis: Ready to pounce? I have a staffer there. She's gonna call me when she hears anything.

Nick: I've seen you knock over little old ladies to be the first with the scoop.

Phyllis: I have not.

Nick: Seriously, what's the deal? I mean, you have been following this Adam-Sharon-Skye thing through every twist and turn. The big finale arrives, and you don't want to be there?

Phyllis: Maybe I just want to be with you.

Nick: Well, that's nice, but completely unnecessary. I'm fine.

Phyllis: I know that Sharon is not the center of your world anymore. But the better question is... why did you choose not to be there?

Eden: Hey.

Noah: Eden. Hey, what are you doing here?

Eden: Oh, I was driving by and saw your car.

Noah: Oh.

Eden: I figured you'd be at your mom's sentencing.

Noah: (Sighs) I was going a little stir-crazy sitting around the house. I thought I would hide out here. (Laughs)

Eden: Uh, if that's a-a hint that you'd rather be alone, I can take off. Or do you want some company?

Jack: Sharon?

Sharon: Jack.

Jack: Hey.

Sharon: (Sighs)

Jack: I asked Leslie to put me on the approved list.

Leslie: (Whispers) Yeah. Excuse me.

Jack: I'm--I'm staring at you. I just--seeing you standing here alive and well, I... (Sighs)

Sharon: I'm just... I'm sorry how much this has hurt everyone.

Jack: Oh, don't worry about everyone. You made this so much worse for yourself.

Sharon: (Sighs) And now I'm paying for it.

Noah: I had planned on going to court today.

Eden: Then why didn't you?

Noah: My mom called, asked me not to. Told my grandma Doris the same thing.

Eden: Well, how come?

Noah: Didn't want us to have to deal with the press.

Eden: She was trying to protect you guys.

Noah: (Sighs) If that's all it was, I would have gone. But I was in the courtroom the day she was convicted. I remember how upset it made her, me seeing her like that. I figure she's already going through enough. Why make it harder? (Sighs)

Nick: Well, I would have been there for Noah to provide some moral support, but he decided not to go, either.

Phyllis: Ooh. Do you think he should be alone?

Nick: No. I called and asked him if he wanted to hang out with me today.

Phyllis: He turned you down?

Nick: (Sighs) Yeah.

Phyllis: Hmm. You know, he was really disillusioned when he found out that Sharon was alive and that she stayed away of her own free will.

Nick: That's another reason why I'm not in that court today. I will never forgive Sharon for the damage she's done to my children. I mean, I can't stand the sight of her right now, and it's not just for Noah and Faith. I talked to Doris the other day.

Phyllis: Oh. How is she?

Nick: She's not great. (Sighs) I don't think she's ever gonna get over knowing that her daughter let her grieve for her for months.

Phyllis: You're usually so quick to forgive Sharon.

Nick: Well, not anymore. I mean, from the day Sharon met Adam to when she was dragged back from New Mexico in handcuffs, she's made one disastrous choice after the other.

Phyllis: Yeah. It's like she's trying to ruin her own life.

Nick: She's ruined a lot of people's lives with her selfishness. That doesn't mean I want her to go to prison.

Phyllis: No, of course not. I mean, she's innocent.

Nick: (Sighs) I wish Adam had never convinced Noah that he can prove Skye's death was an accident.

Phyllis: Yeah, he shouldn't have done that. I mean, to let down...

(Silverware clatters)

Nick: What?

Phyllis: I don't know. I just keep on thinking about... Adam and how--how much he wanted to prove Sharon's innocence when we were in Thailand. And then recently, he-- he was just so sure that-- that maybe he found something on that memory card.

Nick: What are you thinking?

Phyllis: I don't know. It just seems weird. I mean, I want to know how close he was to exonerating Sharon. I think there's more going on with him than he's letting on.

Sharon: I wasn't sure you'd come.

Adam: Did you think I'd miss this?

Sharon: Jack, would you give us a moment?

Jack: Sure.

Sharon: You know, we haven't had time to talk, and I'm sure you must still have questions about my time away and Sam.

Adam: Don't worry about me. You, um... you have a lot more to worry about... going to prison for as many years as--as you will, and... the fact that you're right back here where you started, facing even more time.

Sharon: Adam, I barely remember my life before Skye died.

Adam: Sharon... I fought so hard to find the evidence that would set you free.

Sharon: This is not your fault, and you fought harder for me than anyone.

Phyllis: Okay, well, thanks for breakfast.

Nick: You taking off?

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. I'm going to the office to write about Adam's futile attempt to save Sharon and, uh, wait for word from the court. You coming?

Nick: Yeah, I'll cruise in there in a little bit.

Phyllis: It's just as well. You'd be a distraction, I think.

Nick: What do you mean?

Phyllis: (Sighs) Mm, I think you know what I mean.

Nick: Why don't you tell me?

Phyllis: No. Why don't you guess?

Nick: Tell me.

Phyllis: Um... I think it would just be awkward.

Nick: Awkward?

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. I believe that you don't see yourself as Sharon's knight in shining armor anymore, but for me, when it comes to Sharon, it's very complicated.

Nick: And you don't do complicated.

Phyllis: Do you remember what we were doing when we found out that Sharon was alive?

Nick: I forget things like where I put my keys or where my cell phone is. I don't forget stuff like that.

Phyllis: It made me very hot.

Nick: And you don't want that to happen again?

Phyllis: I don't want it to happen right now.

Nick: Yeah, 'cause, you know, we got a lot to deal with right now.

Phyllis: We have our kids.

Nick: And the magazine, trying to put our stamp back on it.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Yeah. So I think we should just be business partners.

Nick: Cool. And we're adults, right?

Phyllis: Cool. Right?

Nick: Right.

Phyllis: I'm glad we had this talk.

Nick: I am, too.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm.

Nick: Diane?

Diane: Nick.

Nick: (Sighs) Is there something you wanted to say to me?

Diane: I didn't even know you were here.

Nick: Yeah? You've been staring at me and Phyllis for the last half-hour.

Diane: Well, that's-- that's because you're making a spectacle of yourself.

Nick: Oh, that's your specialty, though, right?

Diane: Why are you harassing me? I mean nothing to you. I got the memo.

Nick: You're the one who torpedoed our... whatever it is we had before you married my dad.

Diane: He was willing to commit.

Nick: For, like, five minutes. Then he dumps you, and you slide on over to "Psycho boy," and to make matters worse, you move in with him?

Diane: (Sighs) Okay, just so we're perfectly clear, your brother and I never slept together. You and I did, though, after you knew I was living with him, so it couldn't have bothered you all that much.

Nick: Still, it was a stupid thing to do. You know what Adam's capable of.

Diane: He was the only person willing to help me.

Nick: In exchange for that little ambulance stunt you pulled, which allowed Adam to get enough shares of Newman stock to get a seat on the board.

Diane: All right, just leave me alone, all right? (Sniffles)

Nick: Sure. But I don't think a grand jury's gonna do that. I hope it was worth it.

Diane: You have made your point! I'm worthless. You hate every moment we spent together. I get it. You hate me. I get it!

Nick: Diane, I don't hate you.

Adam: I thought for sure that Nicholas would be here.

Sharon: Yeah, I don't really blame him for not coming.

Adam: I know he's pretty disgusted with you, but he should get over himself, be a little more understanding.

Jack: Uh, Sharon asked to speak privately with Adam.

Victor: I thought you would be with your brother in the hospital.

Jack: Billy's gonna be just fine. How do you do? I'm Jack Abbott.

Sam: Sam Gibson. A pleasure.

Victor: Sam spent some time in New Mexico with Sharon.

Jack: From what I've read in the papers, you were a good friend to her.

Sam: Well, it was-- it was mutual, Sir.

Jack: Are you sticking around town?

Sam: I might do that.

Jack: Word of advice?

Sam: What's that?

Jack: Be careful of the company you keep.

Sam: (Sighs)

Sharon: I assumed Sam went home.

Man: All rise. Court is now in session. The honorable Judge Inez Salazar presiding.

Adam: Good luck.

Judge Salazar: Please be seated.

Judge Salazar: Ms. Newman, you were found guilty of murder by a jury of your peers, but rather than accept that, you chose to avoid punishment by knocking out a guard, escaping, and fleeing the state.

Leslie: Your honor, if I may explain the circumstances--

Judge Salazar: You may not. I have no interest in listening to your client's excuses, Counselor. Sharon Newman, I hereby sentence you to 25 years in the Wisconsin department of corrections for the premeditated murder of Skye Lockhart. In addition, I'm adding five years for escaping custody. And just to clarify, 30 years means 30 years. Parole is no longer an option. You'll be returned to a holding cell until arrangements can be made to transfer you to the penitentiary. This hearing is adjourned.

Jack: Sharon's not the only one who should be looking at five years for her escape.

Victor: Mr. Spencer, excuse me. How can you prosecute innocent people when you damn well know that real criminals like jack Abbott and Diane Jenkins and Adam Wilson are running around free?

Spencer: Their turn will come.

Victor: I certainly hope so.

Adam: (Sniffles) Wow, Sharon. 30 years. That's three decades.

Jack: Sharon, I am so sorry.

Sam: So am I.

Sharon: (Sniffles)

Adam: Sharon... you and Sam haven't had any time alone. I'll go.

Sharon: No, please don't.

Adam: There's nothing else to say.

Jack: I'll be in touch.

Sam: Hey.

Sharon: Well... (Sniffles) It really happened. (Sighs) I'll be an old woman when I'm done paying my debt to society.

Sam: No, no, no. You won't. That's not your debt to pay. You didn't kill anybody.

Sharon: (Sniffles) I'm really sorry I dragged you into this.

Sam: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. I'm here because I want to be, all right?

Sharon: Sam, you gotta forget about me, okay? I'm going away for a long time. (Sniffles) My life is over. (Cries) And I... (Sniffles) I might as well be dead.

Victor: Sharon, please don't say that.

Sharon: (Sighs shakily) Victor, how am I supposed to do 30 years?!

Victor: I'm gonna file an appeal. It's not gonna happen.

Sharon: Really? How? There's no new evidence. What grounds?

Victor: Sam and I will come up with ways to get you out of here, all right?

Sharon: (Sighs) Yeah. Yeah, that's--that's what Adam said before.

Victor: You shouldn't listen to what Adam says. This is not the end of the road, I promise you.

Sharon: (Sniffles) (Sobs) Victor, I cannot hang on to any more false hopes.

Victor: I have never forgiven myself for letting you down before. It is not gonna happen again.

Diane: You don't hate me?

Nick: Of course I don't hate you. But it's very frustrating for me to see you be your own worst enemy.

Diane: (Sighs) I am, aren't I?

Nick: You're beautiful. You're smart. You're an amazing mother to Kyle. You can be a huge success, but you gotta stop wasting your energy chasing after wealthy men.

Diane: It always ends badly, you know, and I keep thinking-- I keep telling myself next time will be different.

Nick: What do you even need a wealthy husband for anyway? You're a talented architect. You can have your own fortune. Your life can be amazing. It can. You just gotta go and believe in yourself.

Diane: You think so?

Nick: I know so. But I'm telling you, as long as you keep lying and scheming and going after the man with the biggest wallet possible, things are never gonna change.

Diane: (Voice breaking) I miss our talks. (Sighs)

(Cell phone rings)

Nick: (Sighs) Go ahead. Do your thing. (Ring) (Ring)

Diane: (Sniffles) (Sighs) What do you want? You don't have to raise your voice, Adam. I want to talk about your plan as much you do. I'm on my way.

Jack: Well, I just came from the courthouse. It's over.

Nick: How bad?

Eden: You know, people make it sound like rehab's this awful place, but, um, it was actually kind of cool. I mean, sure, you have to do gross chores like scrubbing toilets, but, um, you know, the counselors, they really helped me. And they didn't make me feel like a freak. Noah?

Noah: What?

Eden: Aren't you gonna eat?

Noah: I'm not hungry.

(Cell phone rings)

Noah: Hey, Dad.

Nick: Hey, Dude. (Sighs) Uh, listen, I wish I was calling with good news.

Noah: What happened?

Nick: The judge just gave your mom 30 years.

Noah: 30?

Nick: Yeah.

Noah: Well--well, she could get out early, though, right, for--for good behavior?

Nick: It doesn't look like it. Where are you right now? We should be together.

Noah: Uh, maybe later. I-I'll call you.

Jack: Noah's really gotten the worst of this, hasn't he?

Nick: I will never forgive Sharon for what she has put my son through.

Noah: I feel like such an idiot.

Eden: Why?

Noah: I really thought my mom might get her life back.

Eden: It sucks that Adam got your hopes up.

Noah: (Sighs) You know, it was hard enough losing her once. But just when you thought a miracle happens, and she basically comes back from the grave, we have to lose her again? (Sighs) I swear, my family is cursed.

Phyllis: I'm doing a piece on Adam and Sharon Newman. I don't know if you're aware of this, but Sharon has just been sentenced.

Leslie: I need to make a statement to the press. Check in with you later, Sharon?

Victor: I will walk you out, okay? I'm sure that Sharon and Sam would like to have some time alone. Um, Sharon?

Victor: I meant what I said. This is not over.

Victor: What I want to talk to you about is the fact that I'm very, very unhappy with the way the case was handled by you and Vance Abrams.

Leslie: Well, there's not a lot I can do when my client flees custody.

Victor: I don't give a damn. Vance Abrams should not have left town.

Leslie: He had other commitments.

Victor: Listen to me. Considering the amount of money I paid his damn law firm, he and you both should have been at that defense table from the beginning of the trial.

Sharon: You should have gone home.

Sam: I couldn't.

Sharon: Why?

Sam: You know why.

Sharon: I'm not who you thought I was, Sam. I'm not Sheri Coleman.

Sam: You're the gal that helped me nurse Fanny back to health, aren't you? Isn't that you, the one that picked me up off the ground when O'Keefe died when I was too drunk to even see? (Sighs) I think I know exactly who you are, Sharon. You're the girl that reminded me what it felt like to be alive.

Sharon: (Sighs) (Sniffles) You have such a nice life in New Mexico. You've--you have great friends and... (Sniffles) Animals that need you.

Sam: No, I mean, right now... (Sighs) Come on, right now you need me more. You do.

Sharon: (Sniffles) Did Victor ask you to stay?

Sam: Why would you think that?

Sharon: I know that he genuinely wants to help me, but... (Sighs) I wouldn't put it past him to use you to make Adam jealous.

Sam: (Scoffs) You don't give me much credit, do you?

Sharon: You just have no idea how much those two despise each other.

Sam: You know, since the day I met you, you've been trying to push me away.

Sharon: Now you know why.

Sam: Well, it doesn’t matter. It doesn't, 'cause I'm not going anywhere, all right?

Adam: (Sighs)

Diane: Hmm. I heard about Sharon on the radio.

Adam: Mm. At least she had her fan club of men there.

Diane: Who? I know Nick didn't go, because I-I spoke to him.

Adam: Jack did. So was that, uh, Good Samaritan from New Mexico. What's his name, Sam? He was there and his new B.F.F. Victor Newman.

Diane: What are you talking about?

Adam: Nothing. Forget it. Look, are you ready? Because it's almost show time.

Diane: Uh, about that...

Adam: You're not having second thoughts, are you, Diane?

Diane: I-I just have some concerns about going through with what we discussed.

Adam: Mm. You know what concerns me? People who tell me one thing to my face, and they do something else behind my back. We're partners, Diane. We are going to frame my father for your murder, and you're not backing out. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a nice day.

Sharon: (Sighs) it's me. I know I hurt you. There's still so much I want to say. I need to see you, Adam.

Victor: Sam.

Sam: (Sighs) Sorry, Sir. I was, uh, off in my own little world there.

Victor: I understand. Listen, uh... if there's any way I can help you financially while you're here in town, I'd like to cover your expenses while you're trying to help Sharon.

Sam: That's very generous of you, Sir, but I've already checked into a motel. I'm also looking at picking up some part-time shifts at the local vet hospital, so that should give me plenty--

Victor: Good. Okay. Anyway, in case you need anything, you just call me, all right?

Sam: Sir, there-- there is, uh... there's actually one thing.

Victor: What's that?

Sam: I've been reading articles on Sharon's life and the people in it.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Sam: There's, uh, these colorful characters, Sir...

Victor: (Chuckles)

Sam: Yourself included.

Victor: Yeah. Uh-huh. Well, "Colorful" is... well, one of the least offensive things I've been called.

Sam: The story about your son, Adam...

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Sam: Is that true?

Victor: Let me tell you that the truth is much worse than what you read in print.

Sam: You two must have had a hell of a falling-out, huh?

Victor: Do yourself a favor and don't ever underestimate him. Sharon gave him the benefit of the doubt. You saw where she ended up.

Sam: Well, she ended up marrying him, Sir, so there must be some redeeming quality, yeah?

Victor: Don't trust him. I will never make that mistake again.

Adam: You aren't going to disappoint me, are you?

Diane: Look, I want Victor to get his just as much as you do. But if we screw this up, we're going to be the ones hiring defense attorneys.

Adam: It's not gonna happen.

Diane: What if you're wrong? I got a lot to lose.

Adam: You've already lost it, Diane. My father dumped you without a cent, and now the S.E.C. is sweating you down, thanks to him.

Diane: Because you talked me into helping you set him up!

Adam: If you think the grand jury's gonna give you a pass, you are crazy.

Diane: And now you want me to go in even deeper by going along with another one of your bright ideas?

Adam: My father's taken an interest in Kyle. You said that the other day, right?

Diane: Yeah, that's true.

Adam: Yeah, well, good ol' Pops, when he alienates one of his kids, he just wants a do-over with a new kid. And it just sweetens the deal that it happens to be Jack's son.

Diane: What that man won't resort to.

Adam: The only way to stop Victor from destroying your life and Kyle's life is to put him behind bars for the rest of his.

Diane: You're right.

Adam: Everybody knows that my father despises you now after this pregnancy drama the day of the Newman I.P.O. It is a perfect motive for murder.

Diane: Okay. Okay, I'm still in, but I have one condition, and it's nonnegotiable.

Adam: You're really in no position to be negotiating with me, Diane.

Diane: You are going to transfer a very large sum of money into my bank account.

Adam: Why don't I just write you a blank check, Diane? Does that help?

Diane: I'm serious. I'm sending Kyle away. Victor and Jack are already fighting over him. When it all hits the fan, I want him protected.

Adam: And to your tragic demise?

Diane: I'll pick him up and disappear.

Adam: They're gonna be looking for him.

Diane: They'll never find him. And they won't be looking for me.

Adam: You're gonna need to go far away--Europe, somewhere like that.

Diane: That'll be awfully expensive.

Adam: It'll be worth it.

Diane: Deal?

Adam: Yes.

Diane: So... when do I buy the farm, so to speak?

Adam: Soon enough. You said that Victor was interested in playing daddy with Kyle, so why don't we just play along?

Diane: How?

Adam: Sign custody of Kyle over to my father.

Noah: (Sighs) My mom's gonna miss everything-- raising Faith, watching her get married.

Eden: Or you.

Noah: Or me. You know, even the--the little things like--like making a snowman with Faith or--or going to the lake on a hot day.

Eden: Well, it's better than when you thought she was dead.

Noah: Yeah. Maybe for me, but not my baby sister. She's gonna grow up with a mom in prison.

Eden: (Sighs) Especially when she's old enough to go to school.

Noah: Kids can be so mean.

Eden: (Sighs) I'm sorry, Boo. It's just not fair.

Noah: (Sighs) (Sighs)

Eden: (Sighs)

Eden: (Inhales sharply)

Noah: Sorry.

Eden: No, it's fine. And, um, look, I'll be here for you... just not like that.

Noah: Yeah, I'm just-- I'm really glad you're here.

Sam: Why did you tell Sharon that we were working together to help her?

Victor: I assumed we would be.

Sam: We never discussed that, Sir.

Victor: Well, I'm sorry to have overstepped.

Sam: Look, Mr. Newman, I'll help you, obviously, but we gotta get one thing clear-- we're doing this for Sharon.

Victor: Well, what other reason would there be?

Sam: If you're trying to rub your son's nose in the fact that Sharon and I...

Victor: Trust me. My desire to see Sharon vindicated is far stronger, far outweighs my hatred for my son.

Jack: I'm telling you, when that judge said 30 years, I think we all went into shock.

Nick: Sharon must be devastated.

Jack: I understand you're staying away, but... I don't know. Watching your father walk into that courtroom with this Gibson guy instead of you, it was strange.

Nick: What's he like?

Jack: You haven't met him?

Nick: No.

Jack: Well, I didn't talk to him for long. He seems... nice enough.

Nick: (Sighs) It must really gall Adam to see Dad walk in with him. Now they're hanging out together. I mean, talk about twisting the knife.

Jack: And to tell you the truth, Adam seemed more hurt than angry-- really devastated by Sharon's verdict.

Nick: So what did Adam do, grandstand to the press, declare his undying love, vow for justice to be done?

Jack: No, come to think of it, he didn't say much of anything.

Nick: That's a switch. I mean, Adam came into the magazine the other day swearing up and down that he was gonna get Sharon from behind bars.

Jack: But that was before he realized his search for evidence to clear her was a bust, right?

Nick: Yeah.

Jack: Well, maybe at long last, Junior realizes it's time to move on.

Sharon: Adam. Adam, please don't hang up. I need to talk to you.

Diane: Oh, I'm sorry, Hon. Adam's not here.

Phyllis: Thanks for coming.

Adam: (Sighs) Spit it out, Phyllis-- the big news about Sharon you couldn't tell me over the phone.

Phyllis: Yeah. Um, I actually found out...that you had the evidence in your hands that would have set Sharon free. What did you do with it?

Next on "The Young and the Restless"...

Victor: If I agree to do this, it ain't for your sake, it'll be for Kyle.

Sharon: How do you feel about me now, Adam? Is there anything left between us?

Phyllis: I think that Adam is trying to punish Sharon.
