Episode # 9652 ~ Tucker Is Taken Off Life Support
Provided By Suzanne
Proofread By Emma
Sofia: "Mr. Soon-to-be-married man." This is your soon-to-be best woman, giving you a call, bugging you again. Uh, call me back on Malcolm's cell, um, if you need anything for the wedding.
Phyllis: (Chuckles)
Sofia: Okey-dokey. (Chuckles) Um, that's the third time I've called him. That's kind of odd.
Malcolm: Well, do you want to head over to Tucker's and make sure that he, uh, got to the park on time?
Sofia: Well, that's my job. Maybe we should.
Malcolm: Okay, we can do that. But first, we got to tell Phyllis the good news.
Sofia: Oh, yeah.
Malcolm: Big news.
Phyllis: (Chuckles) What big news?
Sofia: Mm.
Phyllis: Aw, really? That's great. That's really great. Congratulations.
Sofia: Thanks.
Phyllis: You're welcome. Oh, I'm so happy for you
Malcolm: (Laughs)
Sofia: (Laughs)
Phyllis: You're gonna be a daddy again.
Malcolm: Yes. Yeah, it's a hell of a surprise. And, you know, Sofia and I couldn't be more, uh, tickled. (Laughs)
Phyllis: (Laughs) Sweet.
Sofia: Tickled? (Laughs)
Phyllis: I-I'm expecting, too.
Malcolm: What?
Phyllis: Uh, not--not me. Daniel. Daniel's baby, yeah.
Sofia: Ohh.
Phyllis: Yeah. Once we get the test results back that Daniel is, um, Lucy's father, then, um, she'll be back. She'll--she'll be back with her--her--her real family. Yeah.
Victoria: This one's for Lucy. Please bring our little girl home to us soon... (Sighs) So I can hold her in my arms again. Every time I close my eyes, I see that woman from the foster care wheeling our little girl away.
Billy: I will, uh, check with Daniel and see if he's heard back from the D.N.A. lab.
Victoria: (Sighs) Thank you, because it's the waiting that's--that's killing me. But I guess with everything going on upstairs...
Billy: Yes, Ashley and Katherine need our support right now, so...
Victoria: Yeah. And Tucker and Abby need our prayers, too.
Ashley: Come on, Abby. Come on, Sweetie, open up those beautiful eyes. It's gonna be okay.
Daniel: Hey.
Ashley: Come on in. I know she'd want you here.
Daniel: She's still pretty out of it?
Ashley: The concussion, you know? Plus all that alcohol.
Daniel: What do the doctors say? How's she doing?
Ashley: Well... well, she's stable, and, um, I think she's gonna wake up pretty soon, and I want to be here when she does.
Daniel: You know, I just, um, I just saw Katherine. She wants you to go to Tucker's room. They're about ready, to bring him up from recovery.
Ashley: Um, okay, but you have to promise me that we will come back as soon as she stirs.
Daniel: Yeah.
Ashley: Okay.
Mauro: Mrs. Newman? Thank you for meeting with me again this morning.
Diane: It's no problem. It gave me a chance to go home and freshen up.
Mauro: (Sighs) Well, before I got called away yesterday, you-- you had stated that you saw the car Ms. Abbott was driving swerve into Mr. McCall.
Diane: Correct.
Mauro: Now you also mentioned that you didn't notice any brake lights.
Diane: Not only that, I saw the car accelerate.
Mauro: Before it struck Mr. McCall?
Diane: It sped up and plowed right into him. I was shocked. I pulled over and called 9-1-1.
Mauro: Quite a coincidence that four people who all knew each other were on an isolated road in the woods at night. Why were you out there, Mrs. Newman?
Diane: I was meeting Tucker. It was supposed to be just the two of us.
Mauro: A romantic meeting? Wasn't he supposed to be marrying Ms. Abbott?
Diane: I don't want to tell you how to do your job, and I don't say this lightly, but if Ashley found out somehow, I think you should consider the possibility this wasn't an accident.
Jack: I come bearing cinnamon rolls.
Victor: That's nice of you but I've... had them send up from the café already.
Jack: Well, how about that? The two of us on the same wavelength.
Victor: First time for everything, isn't there, Jack?
Jack: Bet I know something else that's going through your mind. What's gonna happen to Tucker's empire if Tucker isn't around to run it?
Victor: Why, you!
(Monitor beeping)
Ashley: How did the surgery go?
Kay: Well, they relieved the pressure from Tucker's brain. But, um, the injuries are far more extensive than the doctors realized, so he's in a coma right now.
Ashley: How long is he gonna be like this?
Dr. Charles: Mr. McCall's brain activity is minimal. It could be weeks or months before there's any sign of recovery, if at all. I'm afraid your son's condition requires me ask some difficult questions.
Kay: Such as?
Dr. Charles: We kept him on the ventilator after surgery. Do you know if he has a living will or any other instructions in case he was severely incapacitated?
Ashley: I can't believe that we're even talking like this. I mean, are we really at this point? I mean, isn't there anything that we can do?
Kay: Yes, of course we can, Darling, and I-I promise you I'll handle it. Nothing's going to interfere with Tucker's recovery. Nothing.
Murphy: Listen, why don't we talk about this outside?
Dr. Charles: Of course.
Kay: Yes. Ashley has enough to deal with. I do not want you upsetting her like this.
Dr. Charles: I still need answers. This hospital is required by law--
Kay: I understand all of that. One does not get to my time in life without confronting these issues. However, we will not discuss this any further until we have exhausted every possible measure.
Dr. Charles: That's exactly what we did with last night's surgery. We will continue to test for any hopeful signs. However, it is imperative that we know if he prepared any documents stating his wishes. Please excuse me.
Daniel: I'll make you a little deal. I will do the whole ex-boyfriend thing on your TV show, okay? If... if you promise to lay off the partying for a little while. Okay? You gotta be better to yourself than that. There's a lot of people out here that care about you. And I'm sorry about us. I guess if I could do it all over, I...
(Door opens)
Billy: Hey.
Victoria: Hey.
Daniel: Hey. (Clears throat)
Victoria: How is she?
Daniel: Um, pretty much the same, I guess. You know, I've just been sittin' here thinkin' about this whole Lucy situation. I think the second that I realized she was Daisy's kid, I should have handled everything totally differently.
Phyllis: Oh, so Lucy and--and your baby will grow up together. How sweet will that be?
Sofia: (Chuckles)
Malcolm: Mm-hmm. You have to wonder.
Sofia: You don't have to wonder anything. I know. I know it's a complex situation.
Malcolm: (Clears throat)
(Cell phone rings)
Malcolm: Hey, uh, this could be Tucker. Talk to me.
Kay: It's Katherine.
Malcolm: She's right here. Hold--hold on one sec. It's Katherine for you. She says it's urgent.
Sofia: Katherine?
Kay: I tried, uh, calling your cell, but, uh, it-- it went straight to voice mail.
Sofia: Oh, yeah, I put it on the charger last night and forgot to pick it up this morning. Is, uh, everything okay?
Kay: Uh, Sofia, there's-- there's no easy way to tell you this.
Sofia: What--what is it? Uh, could you, uh, repeat that for Malcolm and Phyllis, please?
Kay: Last night, Tucker was struck down by a car. He was in the road. (Stammers) I don't know why. Ashley was driving, and Abby was in the car with her, and then somehow they... they just crashed moments later.
Phyllis: How is everybody doing? How is everyone?
Kay: Well, Ashley wasn't hurt. Abby's still unconscious, but she's gonna be okay. As for Tucker, it's... uh, well, uh, he had, uh, he had this massive injury to his brain, and... and he's in a coma on a ventilator, and he can't breathe on his own.
Malcolm: (Scoffs)
Sofia: I'm so sorry.
Kay: Uh, listen, uh, Sofia, I'm at, uh, the I.C.U. at Memorial, and the doctors have done all they can, but it's the hospital. They--they're after me, uh, to tell them what Tucker's wishes were about...
Sofia: Oh, sure. I will, um, get Tucker's lawyer and, uh, I'll be right over.
Kay: Thank you. (Sighs)
Victor: Sofia on her way?
Kay: (Stammers) What does that mean? What kind of a mother am I that I have to call a colleague of my son's to get such personal information? I mean, I was given a second chance to make up or abandoning him. (Laughs) Guys, I... I squandered it.
Mauro: Why would you agree to a romantic rendezvous the night before Tucker's wedding?
Diane: He was still a free man.
Mauro: And yet, you're not a free woman. In fact, the man you're married to is one of Tucker's biggest rivals from what I've gathered.
Diane: My marriage to Victor is being annulled. Tucker invited me to meet with him, so I went. And it's a good thing I did, too. Otherwise, no one would ever really know what happened out there on that road.
Ashley: Abby was right about you. I didn't believe her. Was Diane really worth it? Was she worth everything that happened? (Sniffles) (Sighs)
Jack: Ash, you all right?
Ashley: He brought this on himself, Jackie.
Jack: What?
Ashley: You asked me last night why... (Sniffles) Abby and I were on our way up to the cabin. She insisted that I go there. She wanted me to see with my own eyes what I was getting myself into with this marriage.
Jack: So what happened?
Ashley: Tucker told me that he was going to a bachelor party at the cabin. Jackie, he was meeting Diane.
Jack: W-wait. Tucker and Diane?
Ashley: How could you do this to me? How could do this to me the night before our wedding? (Sobs)
Billy: Daniel, are you having second thoughts about giving Lucy to us?
Daniel: If I'd told the truth right away, we probably would have worked something out quietly. Waiting made everything more complicated, so I owe the two of you an apology. Abby, too. Do you know, if I'd been up front with her about the baby, maybe she wouldn't have lost it the way she did?
Victoria: Listen, um, you know, I feel badly, to I probably should have been paying more attention.
Billy: All right, look, Guys, what's done is done. Right now, we need to focus on helping her recover and then getting Lucy back to us.
Victoria: Yes. (Sighs)
Jack: Tucker told Ashley he was on his way to a bachelor party. In fact, he was on his way to our cabin to have fun with Diane, and, yes, I do mean that kind of fun.
Victor: Where the hell did you get that information?
Jack: Ashley just told me. Abby apparently found out about it and thought her mother should know. The point is, none of this would have happened if you'd been keeping an eye on things at home.
Victor: Will you stop this?
Jack: I'm just the messenger here. I think we should save our contempt for Diane.
Victor: That's another thing you and I can agree on.
Jack: (Sighs)
Mauro: We need to finish up our interview.
Ashley: Could we please... could we please do this later?
Mauro: I've received forensic reports from the accident scene which raise serious questions.
Ashley: My fiancé's in a coma, and my daughter has a serious head injury.
Mauro: And once she's awake, I intend to speak with her.
Ashley: Do you have children, Detective? Because if you do, then you must know what I'm feeling. Excuse me. I need to be with my daughter.
Mauro: You can either answer my questions here or downtown. It's your choice, Ms. Abbott.
(Monitor beeping)
Kay: I'm beginning to see your side of things, Murphy.
Murphy: Oh, Katherine, there's not a-a my side or your side. Decisions like this, it's--it's a lot more complicated.
Kay: No. No, no, not in this case. Right now, I'm a mother who would do whatever it takes to keep her son alive...a machine breathing for him. Even if there was just the slightest sign that his brain would heal.
Sofia: Oh, my God.
Kay: Sofia, I'm so glad you got here.
Sofia: (Sighs) Mrs. Chancellor, I'm so sorry. Um, this is Nelson McGinnis, Tucker's lawyer. Um... (Sniffles) Katherine is, um, Tucker's mother, and this is her husband Murphy.
Nelson: I'm sorry to be meeting under such terrible circumstances.
Kay: Well, I didn't know what to tell the hospital when they started asking about medical directives.
Murphy: Are there any on file?
Nelson: Tucker does have a living will. He made it very clear he does not want any extraordinary measures taken...
Murphy: (Sighs)
Ashley: Go ahead. Ask your questions.
Mauro: The lack of tire tracks and skid marks from your car indicate that you never even braked or tried to turn away from where Tucker was standing. In fact, you accelerated. How do you explain that?
Ashley: I already told you, I was driving my daughter's car, and we were arguing.
Mauro: Mm-hmm.
Ashley: I got distracted, and when I-I-I looked back, there was Tucker looming in my headlights. I mean, what about that, surprises you? I mean, obviously, I thought I braked, I didn't. I must have hit the accelerator.
Mauro: Were you so stunned to see him? I mean, weren't you driving up that way to prevent your fiancé from having an affair?
Victor: Excuse me. That is enough.
Mauro: I'm not through questioning her.
Victor: Ashley, would you kindly look in on our daughter? I think she needs you, okay?
Ashley: Yes, of course.
Mauro: Interfering with an investigation is a crime.
Victor: Your questions will be addressed.
Mauro: This isn't a simple accident report.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Mauro: A witness alleged that this might have been an attempt on the victim's life.
Victor: Does that witness happen to be my wife?
Mauro: I have forensic evidence to support the theory.
Victor: Okay.
Mauro: And I've also established a motive.
Victor: Let me tell you something. I've known Ms. Jenkins for many, many years. Whatever she says is not trustworthy, especially if it pertains to my ex-wives. She has an agenda.
Mauro: If you'll excuse me, I need to find Ms. Abbott.
Victor: No, Detective, you will not harass her. Not right now. If you persist in questioning her now, I will have to lodge a complaint with your superior Commissioner O'Connor, a complaint he will take very serious. You have a nice day.
Ashley: I just wanted to see how he's doing.
Kay: Well, Mr. McGinnis here has informed us...
Ashley: Hello.
Kay: That, uh, my son has a living will, and he requested we take no extraordinary measures to prolong his life.
Murphy: He's gonna have to come off the ventilator.
Ashley: No. Absolutely not.
Nelson: I'm sorry, but--
Ashley: No, Tucker is a fighter. That's how he's gotten everything in his life. It's--that's how he's lived his life. He--he doesn't give us not on anything.
Nelson: It's because Tucker is a fighter that he doesn't want a machine fighting for him. No. He's made it quite clear to me on number of occasions that when he's ready to go, it's gonna be his choice and his alone.
Ashley: He is not ready.
Kay: No, of course he isn't. He would--he wouldn't dare leave so much unfinished.
Ashley: And as his fiancé, I have to tell you, I won't allow it.
Nelson: With all due respect, you have no say in the matter.
Kay: Well, I do, and you will damn well listen. I will use every bit of the clout I have in this town to make sure that my son has a chance to survive.
Malcolm: Baby, what's wrong?
Sofia: Um... (Sighs) They said, uh...
Jack: Said what?
Sofia: Tucker left instruction um, not to do anything extraordinary to prolong his life.
Nelson: I'm sorry.
Sofia: Oh, um, this is Nelson McGinnis, Tucker's attorney.
Phyllis: Uh, Phyllis Summers.
Jack: Hi, I'm Jack Abbott.
Nelson: Hi, uh, as Tucker's second-in-command, there is an additional document I think you should all know about. Uh, in the event that he is incapacitated or otherwise unable to manage his companies and estates, Tucker left instructions for a transfer of his interests, and in light of the these circumstances, I believe the documents are in my office. I'll have a meeting of all the interested parties as soon as possible.
Jack: Who was a part of that meeting?
Nelson: I'll be debriefing Sofia privately, if you'll excuse us.
Malcolm: Of course.
Phyllis: A little vulture-like, don't you think?
Jack: If that's what I have to be, fine. The future of Jabot may be on the line.
Ashley: Hi.
Victor: Hi.
Ashley: So, um...
Victor: (Sighs)
Ashley: Do you think that detective's gonna keep bugging me?
Victor: If she comes at you again, tell her that you refuse to answer questions because you want to have legal representation.
Ashley: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You think I need an attorney?
Victor: Yes. Let me call Michael Baldwin. He has a lot of experience with this. You want me to?
Ashley: No, no. I-I-it's--no. It's not a big deal. I can handle it. (Cell phone rings)
Daniel: Sorry. I'm expecting a phone call.
Ashley: No, it's--go ahead.
Daniel: Hello? Yeah. um, yeah, okay, I'll-- I'll be right there. That's the genetics lab. They've got the test results.
Victoria: Can we come with you?
Daniel: I'd really need to do it on my own. Um, how about I come and find you guys after? Deal?
Billy: Yeah, we'll be right here.
Victoria: Yeah, sure.
Daniel: Bye.
Billy: (Clears throat)
Victoria: Gosh, I hate this.
Ashley: Don't you already know what the test results are?
Billy: Yeah, but it doesn't mean we're free and clear on this. Child protective services can decide that Daniel can't provide the appropriate home and then Lucy will stay in foster care. Or Phyllis will get custody, and that's a whole lot worse.
Victoria: I don't care. I don't care about any of that. I just--I want my baby back. I just want her back.
Victor: I have to go somewhere. Excuse me.
Billy: Ahh, that's right. Off you go, right as your daughters need you.
Victoria: (Sighs)
Victor: I know you're upset right now. I'll pretend not to have heard that, all right?
Billy: (Chuckles)
Daniel: I can't even think about doing a show right now. Could you maybe call me next month and-- and we'll see if we can't figure something out? Thank you.
Victor: Um, you hold that child's fate in your hands, and I hope you will not disappoint my daughter.
Jack: Wow, you got a lot of nerve, and don't tell me it's because you care, 'cause we both know. Here comes Diane, responsible for all the world's misery. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. You don't get to play the victim.
Diane: It was Tucker who invited me to meet with him.
Jack: Even if that were true, she agreed to meet him, and look what happened.
Victor: Jack, if you don't mind, I'd like to talk to my wife, have her explain her allegation that Ashley ran over Tucker intentionally.
Jack: Why you little...yeah, you can have the room, if you can stand to be with her...
Billy: Takin' it straight to the top, huh?
Kay: (Chuckles) Uh, you know what, Bill? As big a deal as I am with the board at the hospital, it evidently isn't enough to have my son. The administrator wouldn't even budge. And, uh, legally, we can't keep him on the ventilator.
Billy: The law really sucks sometimes.
Kay: Yes.
Billy: Sorry. (Clears throat)
Kay: (Chuckles) You know, just yesterday... yesterday, Tucker was so looking forward to starting a whole new life with Ashley. And I wanted to make that chance happen and to make things better between the two of us.
Billy: Well... you've made deals with the big guy before.
Kay: (Chuckles) Oh, oh, my dear, I wish I was dealing with God. I mean, I can rail against him, deal with him, make deals with him... (Sighs) Perhaps obtain just a scrap of mercy, unlike with these... bloody bureaucrats.
Billy: Yeah. Vicki and I know what it's like to fight the system.
Kay: Yeah.
Billy: And it looks like there's gonna be a whole lot more of it before everything's settled with Lucy.
Kay: Well, then perhaps the two of us should ask for a bit of help from the one source that's able to give it.
Billy: (Sighs)
Kay: Hmm? You first.
Billy: Mnh-mnh. You first.
Both: Together.
Kay: (Chuckles)
Victor: For you to tell the police such a vicious lie--
Diane: It wasn't a lie. I saw that car speed up and steer into Tucker. Why is it so wrong to want to make that known?
Victor: You didn't just describe what happened. You accused Ashley of attempted murder. What the hell is the matter with you? You planted the seed out of pure spite. How do you know what was in her mind?
Diane: Whatever you say, Victor. God knows you're always right.
Victor: This whole thing happened because you... are nothing but a tramp.
Ashley: She actually told the detective that I was trying to kill my fiancé?
Jack: Shh. The detective is right outside the door.
Ashley: Why would she do that? Does she hate me that much?
Jack: Maybe she's jealous. I don't know. She lives to stir up trouble. She's not gonna get away with this, though.
(Cell phone rings)
Jack: I asked Murphy to call me if there was any new--it's me. Murphy. Hey, Murph.
Ashley: What?
Jack: Thanks. They're taking Tucker off the ventilator.
Ashley: I thought Katherine was gonna try to fight that.
Jack: I'm sorry.
Abby: (Moans) Mom?
Ashley: Abby, Honey?
Jack: Hey, Abby. Its Uncle Jack and Mom. Can you hear us? Abby?
Ashley: Look, Jack, would you leave us and tell Kay I’ll be there as soon as I can, okay.
Jack: Okay, I'll come get you if they need you.
Ashley: Thank you. Hi, Honey.
Abby: (Sighs) What happened?
Ashley: There was an accident, Sweetie.
Abby: I was driving. Oh, my God. Oh, my God, Tucker.
(Monitor beeping)
Kay: Well, could you at least give us some idea of what to expect?
Dr. Charles: Unfortunately, there's no way to predict if Mr. McCall will be able to breathe on his own.
Jack: And what if he does? What then?
Dr. Charles: We see if it lasts.
Kay: The doctor's saying if he removes this apparatus from Tucker, he could die. Right? And in all likelihood, he will die. Right? Oh, God, I wish those damned lawyers were here flipping the switch, because I'll tell you something right now-- this travesty is on their heads! (Moans) God!
Murphy: (Sighs)
Kay: Oh, Tucker.
Kay: Oh, God. Murphy.
Phyllis: (Sighs) I got your text. Those the results?
Daniel: Yep.
Phyllis: Okay.
Daniel: I already sent a copy to the court, so if you want to open it, you can.
Phyllis: (Sighs) Okay. Well, you can't argue with 99.9%, can you?
Daniel: No.
Phyllis: What are you doing? Go get your baby out of custody and bring her home.
Daniel: Where exactly is home?
Phyllis: (Sighs) You can bring her to my place. I... will take care of her if that's what you want. I will take full responsibility in her upbringing if that's what you want. Just promise me-- just--just promise me you won't give her back to Billy and Victoria. They're two of a kind.
Billy: Well, that's nice, Phyllis. Always good to know who your friends are.
Phyllis: This isn't really about friendship, is it, Billy?
Victoria: Oh, well, obviously not.
Daniel: (Sighs) D.N.A. test results. No surprises.
Billy: Great, so what now?
Victoria: Please tell me you're not gonna let your mother use our baby to work out her issues.
Phyllis: Victoria, I'm so sorry, but this isn't and never was your baby.
Daniel: Okay, okay, okay. Really? Really? Are we gonna sit here and argue about this? Not in here, okay?
Billy: Does that mean you're gonna keep your word?
Daniel: What it means is I've had it with all three of you. I'm gonna go home and get the court order I need to take custody of Lucy, and then after that, we'll see.
Victoria: (Sighs)
Billy: (Purses lips)
Victor: If I had any doubt about ending this marriage, I don't now.
Diane: Oh, so you're dumping me because I told the police the truth? Come off it, Victor. You can't stand the thought of my being with Tucker or anybody else, and yet I walked in on you and Nikki doing it more than once, and you call me a tramp?
Victor: You listen to me. This is not about infidelity. This is about family. Your implicating the mother of my daughter. You don't know who I am, do you?
Diane: I know exactly who you are. You're the biggest hypocrite on the planet. That's who you are.
Victor: You and I are finished, and I'm going to make sure that this time, you will not walk away a wealthy woman. All right? Our marriage is annulled. You ain't gonna get a cent. How's that and I want you to get out of the ranch today.
Diane: (Sighs)
Abby: I ran over Tucker.
Ashley: No, Honey.
Abby: I hit him with my car.
Ashley: No, no, no.
Abby: Did he--did I kill him?
Ashley: Abby.
Abby: Is he dead?
Ashley: Abby, you're wrong. I was driving. You have no reason to panic, Honey.
Dr. Charles: I'm about to remove the tube.
(Monitor beeping))
Kay: Tucker, breathe. Come on, Sweetheart. Breathe. No, damn it. Now you--you listen to me. You are my son, and you're not giving up. Don't you dare let him go, God. Don't you dare l going to let him go! Breathe, damn it!
Tucker: (Gasps)
Kay: Breath, damn--
Tucker: (Exhales)
Kay: Breathe.
Tucker: (Gasps)
Kay: Oh, God.
(Tucker exhales)
Kay: Oh, God.
Tucker: (Gasps)
Kay: Oh, God.
Jack: Wow.
Tucker: (Gasps)
Kay: Son, you can do it.
Malcolm: Come on, Tucker.
Kay: Yes, you can.
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Victor: Get your things and get out. Otherwise, I'll have you thrown off the ranch.
Billy: I'm gonna get full custody of our daughter.
Chloe: In your dreams.
Lily: I know this can't be real. I just need you so much.
