Nikki: Brad, do I have to spell it out for you? Abby is the only child that ashley will ever have, and victor is her ological father!
Brad: He doesn't know that.
Nikki: That's what I'm worried about. (Telephone rings) (ring)
Sharon: Hello?
Agnes: How long were you planning on keeping me waiting?
Sharon: Agnes?
Agnes: You were supposed to call me right back, sharon. Give me an answer.
Sharon: Oh, I'm sorry. This is the first chance I've had to get to a phone.
Agnes: So what's the verdict? We're running out of time. Were you able to handle things with nikki?
Sharon: I really think we'd be better off just rescheduling this for tomorrow morning.
Agnes: That won't work. We can't put it off.
Sharon: Look, I know we're tight on time--
Agnes: We're out of time. It has to be tayay. The gala's practically upon us, and we have to do a final survey of the grounds.
Sharon: Okay, fine. You know what, just go and pick up ruby and mr. Worthington and meet me up at the main house.
Nikki: Look, I didn't ask you over here to argue.
Brad: Then don't push your insecurities about victor on me.
Nikki: I'm sorry. I know you and ashley are mourning the loss of your child.
Brad: Then why are you laying all this garbage on me, nikki, about my wife being vulnerable to your husband?
Nikki: You're right. You're right. As a friend, I should be comforting you, not giving you more to worry about.
Brad: I'm not the one who's worried. You are.
Nikki: Brad, I hope you know that I will always be here for you with whatever you need.
Brad: Thanks.
Nikki: Have you eaten anything today?
Brad: No, no, no, no, I'm not hungry. And besides, I'd better get going. If I bump into that bastard twice in one day, I will not be able to control myself.
Nikki: Brad, I wish you could just control these hostilities.
Brad: Damn it, nikki, victor needs to be punished for what he's done. For once in his life, he needs to be held accountable.
Gina: So how was everything, father?
Todd: Oh, it was delicious. Thank you.
Gina: Good. I want you to be sure to linger as long as you wish.
Todd: Thanks. The woman over there, she seems terribly upset about something.
Gina: Ashley carlton.
Todd: You know her?
Gina: Yes. She was nine months pregnant, had a horrible car accident. She lost her baby.
Todd: This happened recently?
Gina: Very.
Todd: How tragic.
Gina: Perhaps, father, you could say a prayer for her. Right now I think she needs all the help she can get.
Todd: Yes, I will.
Gina: It's on the house.
Todd: No. Thank you. (Silverware piece clatters)
Ashley: Thank you. I seem to be all thumbs today.
Todd: Is everything all right?
Ashley: Yes, I'm fine, father.
Todd: You look like you could use someone to talk to.
Ashley: No, not at all. Don't bother. I'm okay.
Todd: You mind if I sit down?
Ashley: Well, I guess I can't exactly say no to a priest, now can I?
Chris: This visit with your brother really upset you.
Paul: Doesn't it upset you?
Chris: You told him you were searching for answers?
Paul: Yeah, but--
Chris: But you didn't like the answers you got.
Paul: Look, chris, my brother's a priest. Of course I'm not going to like the answers. You know, he can say whatever he wants to about me. It might even be true, but to drag you into it is--
Chris: You don't have to protect me.
Paul: Todd said the same thing, but I'm not protecting you.
Chris: He made quite a strong allegation.
Paul: That our love is really more of an obsession? That's nuts. You're not buying into this, are you?
Chris: Something that you're drawn to, that you can't turn away from, you can't let go of, even if it's not good for you? That's an obsession, right?
Paul: I guess so.
Chris: The last year-- doesn't that almost exactly describe you and me? Think about it.
Larry: Hoo.
Jill: Keep that ice on it, larry.
Larry: You know, if feels like my brain is starting to freeze. Damn, girl, you really nailed me.
Jill: Well, you deserved it! Pretending to be a mugger? Do you realize if katherine hadn't stopped me, I'd have caved your skull in all the way?
Kay: I have never really seen you like that before. It was like you were possessed.
Jill: I was scared out of my mind, katherine. You two and your little game took five years off my life. I hope you're happy. Good afternoon. Anita: Calm down, frederick. Brittany will be here any minute.
Frederick: Exactly. Since I've never had a conversation with my daughter about her being a stripper atat a nightclub, I guess I ought to just be nice and relaxed.
Anita: Being all wound up about it is not going to help anything.
Frederick: What do I say to her, anita?
Anita: You do not lay down the law. That is the most important thing.
Frederick: Well, then there's nothing to talk to her about, because what I want to say to her is, "stop doing this now!"
Anita: Just--here she comes. Just follow my lead.
Brittany: Hi.
Anita: Hi, sweetheart.
J.T.: Ah, come on.
Raul: Hey.
J.T.: Yo, what's up?
Raul: Is brittany home?
J.T.: No, the coast is clear. You can relax.
Raul: Hey, I'm just asking, all right? I don't care if she's here or not.
J.T.: (Chuckles) whatever. So where you been?
Raul: School. You know, that place with all the big buildings, professors and students. You remember that?
J.T.: Oh, is that what that's called?
Raul: Yeah.
J.T.: I figured maybe you'd be at the boutique.
Raul: I don't work today.
J.T.: Who said anything about working?
Raul: Why would I go to the boutique if I wasn't on the schedule?
J.T.: I don't know. Maybe to, uh, see lauren.
Raul: Are you seriously still stuck on her stopping by the other night? Get a life.
J.T.: Oh, I will, just as soon as you give me all the deilils. So how was it, man?
Raul: How was what?
J.T.: The kiss. Don't try to deny it, raul. I know all about it. You got a little action from the boss.
Larry: Ow! God, is my head still pounding.
Jill: Well, you'll get no sympathy from me. All right, now that we've got larry's thick skull taken care of, would you two please tell me what this fiasco is all about?
Larry: Jill, it was my idea.
Kay: Larry thought if you saw me in danger, you, um, would react as, well, you did.
Larry: And that would show that you cared about mrs. Chancellor even though you say that you don'T.
Jill: Wow, that is easily the stupidest plan I've ever heard of.
Larry: Hey, there's no need to get nasty.
Kay: It was a little misguided, perhaps, not fully thought out, obviously.
Larry: Well, but we got the exact results that we were after.
Jill: Why? Because I defended katherine?
Kay: You did, jill.
Jill: Well, you could have just asked me. "Jill, if a mugger ever attacks me, would you defend me d d not run away?" And I would have said, "yes," and then larry wouldn't have this bump on his skull.
Kay: The idea was that you would feel protective and--
Larry: That you care for her and that you, you know, you love her.
Jill: That's just-- gee, katherine, I certainly hope this method of yours of soliciting affection doesn't catch on, or valentine's day could turn out to be a real nightmare.
Kay: I wasn't soliciting anything, jill.
Jill: No, you weren'T. You were testing me again, weren't you? And what did you find out? Did you find out that I was a good person? That I was a decent person? That I wasn't the kind of person who would leave an old lady to be mugged and not do anything? Gee, shock, shock, surprise. I swear, the more I think about this, e e more offended I am.
Larry: You know, I hate to bail on you, mrs. C., But all of this yelling just seems to make my head hurt worse.
Larry: You know, jill, you were right, okay? It was dumb. I'm sorry. I thought it would be a good thing, and I guess it wasn'T. So if you're going to sue us, do me a favor and let me know so I can call an attorney.
Jill: What, now I'm the one who's supposed to feel bad?
Todd: By the way, my name is todd.
Ashley: Ashley.
Todd: Very nice meeting you, ashley.
Ashley: I haven't seen you before. What part of genoa city is your parish in?
Todd: Oh, actually I work in detroit. I'm just here visiting someone.
Ashley: Oh, well, I have to admit, I haven't been to church in a long time.
Todd: Oh, taking a vacation from those boring sermons, huh?Ashley: No, not really. I've had some turmoil in my life lately.
Todd: That's usually the time that we need the lord the most.
Ashley: That's true. I'm going to be going back now that things are settling down.
Todd: It sounds like it's beea a particularly difficult period for you?
Ashley: Well, business mostly. But since it is a family-owned business, you know, a lot of people I care about have been affected.
Todd: Nothing personal then?
Ashley: No. Personally, I have a lot to look forward to.
Todd: That's encouraging.
Ashley: But since my family has been through so much, and they need to have their spirits lifted, I have just the solution.
Todd: What is that?
Ashley: My new baby. We're going to have mm christened soon, and I'm planning a huge family celebration.
Todd: You have a new baby?
Ashley: Yeah, a boy, the most beautiful boy you've ever seen. Now don't go there. I know, father, most new mothers, that's exactly what they always say.
Nikki: Brad, I understand your needing someone to blame.
Brad: What are you saying, nikki? That I needed a scapegoat, so I pulled victor's name out of hat?
Nikki: Of course not. I know how you feel about him. You've felt that way for years, t t in spite of that, everything that happened to ashley is not victor's fault.
Brad: Oh, come on, you don't really believe that.
Nikki: What I believe is that he went to visit her out of concern for a friend.
Brad: Oh, nikki, that is such a crock! There is nothing innocent or friendly about your husband's inrerest in my wife.
Nikki: You say that, yet you refuse to acknowledge that ashley may have feelings for my husband.
Brad: No, it's the other way around. Victor's the one who can't let go. He can't let ash live her life without his damned interference.
Nikki: Listen to us. You defend ashley. I stick up for victor. Why? Because of this horrible secret that we share, this secret that we hope to god victor never finds out.
Brad: Abby.
Nikki: I wish I didn't know.
Brad: I can't stand the thought of that bastard's blood running through my daughter's veins.
Nikki: But you do agree that victor can never know?
Brad: We'd better hope the hell that dru keeps her big mouth shut.
Nikki: You're very sure about ashley?
Brad: There is no way she would ever tell. In fact, I hope after all this, she'll have no reason to ever see victor again.
Nikki: Brad, the gala is tomorrow night. What about that?
Brad: There is no way we're going to be attending, nikki. No way.
Nikki: I wish I weren't attending. I'm dreading the whole thing.
Brad: What are you talking about? I thought you loved hosting these big events.
Nikki: I hate it. I've never enjoyed it. I always get forced into doing it, and this year is a total disaster.
Brad: Why?
Nikki: Why? Sharon-- daughter-in-law from hell.Brad: You two are having problems?
Nikki: Her main goal in life is to bring me down. She's not even subtle about it. Before you got here, she...
Nikki: Uh, sharon, what is going on here?
Paul: Look at this picture. What do you see?
Chris: You and me happy together.
Paul: Love, memories, a beautiful life.
Chris: We had all that, and then things changed. Our marriage fell apart, and not too long after that, you married isabella.
Paul: What a travesty.
Chris: Our relationship should have ended then, but it didn'T. You couldn't let go, and neither could I.
Paul: Well, it's true I was very possessive of you while I was married to isabella.
Chris: You know, I think back to the way I acted when I first found out you were with someone else. Why didn't I just walk away? Why couldn't I accept that you were with isabella? It's like I fed on the pain and the drama of it all, and so did you. Like going to your son's christening. You told me not to go, and I knew that isabella only invited me to push my buttons. Things would have been so different if I hadn't shown up that day.
Paul: Well, chris, don't tell me you're blaming yourself.
Chris: I am not blaming myself. I am just saying things will never be the same because of it.
Paul: Well, do you think we can never get beyond it?
Chris: Why did you do it?
Paul: I w o out of control. I was desperately trying to hold onto you. I couldn't bear having you walk away.
Chris: Is that what your brother said?
Paul: Yeah, pretty much.
Chris: We did so much to hurt each other, and we just ended up hurting ourselves.
Paul: You were my whole life, chris, and to see you turning away and riding off into the sunset with baldwin--
Chris: You couldn't handle it. You couldn't bear seeing me with michael, and I hated seeing you with isabella. Oh, god, look at all the damage we have brought to our lives.
Kay: You really didn't give poor larry any credit for having such good intentions.
Jill: Well, you know what they say about the road to hell.
Kay: Lighten up, jill.
Jill: Lighten up? That is the advice you give me? God, now I have a headache.
Kay: Jill, I saw the look in your eyes when you thought I was going to be dragged off and killed. It wasn't as though you were just defending some helpless person off the street or just being a good citizen. No, no, I mean, you-- you were like a tigress.
Jill: I thought I was gonna get dragged off with you.
Kay: So you refuse to take anything positive from this experience?
Jill: Okay, katherine, you win. I do care about you. You are my mother. I did defend you more than I would a stranger.
Kay: Well, then can we build on that? I mean, can we take that as a first step,
I is this all I'm going to get? I really need to know, jill.
Sroron: We need to have a short meeting here. It's the gala. Just a few last-minute arrangements. I was sure I had mentioned it.
Brad: I'm gonna get going.
Nikki: Yeah, okay. Call if you need to. Bye.
Laird: Nikki, darling, you look gorgeous as always.
Nikki: Thank you, laird.
Agnes: May we?
Nikki: You most certainly--
Sharon: Agnes and ruby, why don't you head on into the dining room and get started witht t me? I'll be right t <
