Victor: No. I was hoping to meet my son here.
Victor: Nope. Called his secretary. She hasn't seen him either.
Victor: I wasn't aware of that.
Victor: Huh. Well, it doesn't matter. I guess I'll find out when he comes to the office. Um...
Victor: It's just that I had a very successful meeting. I wanted to talk to him about that.
Victor: I hope it means as much to him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: Jack--
Jack: Don't even say it.
Nikki: Excuse me?
Jack: I know why you're here.
Nikki: You do?
Jack: Honey, you got it written all over your face.
Nikki: I haven't had a very pleasant morning.
Jack: Courtesy of Victor, no doubt.
Nikki: Naturally, you would assume that he has--
Jack: What do you say we just make this short and sweet, okay? No hard feeling. I know where you're coming from. You had to cut your losses.
Nikki: What the hell are you talking about?
Jack: You have a letter for me?
Nikki: A letter? Why would I have a letter?
Jack: I'm going to need more than a verbal resignation.
Nikki: Resignation?
Jack: That is why you're here? You've decided to leave Jabot?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brad: Snake leaves a bad taste in your mouth, doesn't it?
Damon: Newman? (Laughs) well, I suppose that's a good thing.
Brad: Oh?
Damon: Haven't you all been harassing me incessantly to get on board with this competition between Jabot and Newman?
Brad: And now that you've met the man in the flesh...
Damon: Everything I've been told begins to take on an air of, uh, legitimacy.
Brad: Newman plays for keeps, Damon--doesn't particularly care who gets hurt in the process.
Damon: Perhaps my eyes have been opened.
Brad: Oh, gee. We don't want to turn you into an old cynic now.
Damon: Never.
Brad: Listen, that stuff about your personal finances doesn't leave this room.
Damon: Thank you, but I have nothing to hide. I did invest heavily on a horse that didn't turn out to be a winner. But you know what? Man, he was glorious nonetheless, and I loved the experience. I don't need a horse farm in order to feel good about myself.
Brad: Let's keep our nose to the grindstone, and maybe you can hold on to that horse farm, retire to it one day.
Damon: That's a lovely thought, though I think it's going to take more than just hard work under the circumstances.
Brad: Based on what Jack said.
Damon: Yeah, about how that-- well, Newman-- might have something up his sleeve. You know, I'm thinking, I may have a way to find out what that is.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Victor: Thank you.
Victor: He has put a lot of effort into it, hasn't he?
Victor: Well, what do you think?
Victor: That's interesting.
Victor: You certainly do. How are things going with you and my son?
Victor: No, but go ahead. You have one.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Victor: I'm glad to hear that.
Victor: Why me?
Victor: You should realize that family is very important to me, and I hope from the bottom of my heart that things between you and my son would work out, because I'm very concerned about both of you and your beautiful children.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Victor:
Victor: No, I really don’t.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Victor: Yeah.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael: (Humming)
Michael: (Imitating Victor) Hello. I want to take over the world. Yes, I want the world. Yes, the whole thing. I'm tired of fooling around with it a piece at a time. Yes, the whole damn world, and right now, you got that? Good. And a
Michael: Didn't see you come in.
Phyllis: No, you didn't, because you were in fantasy land.
Michael: (Groans) well, couldn't help it.
Phyllis: Yes. That's what the curious cat said before the lights went out.
Michael: Oh, well, thank you for saving me from myself.
Phyllis:
Ha ha! My pleasure. So what is
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: That's why you thought I was here, to resign?
Jack: Aren't you?
Nikki: Absolutely not! How can you even think that?
Jack: Well, I saw the long face. I kind of assumed that--
Nikki: What, that I'm quitting? My God, Jack, what do you-- you think I'm going to walk in here with a smile from ear to ear? I mean, it's not exactly a day of celebration.
Jack: Oh, okay. Okay. I'm sorry.
Nikki: You should be.
Jack: I assumed the black knight had worn you down by now-- he browbeat you into leaving jabot before they mowed us over.
Nikki: Let's make one thing very clear, okay? "The black knight," as you are so fond of saying, doesn't browbeat me into anything, not anymore.
Jack: Okay. Point taken.
Nikki: Good. Let's not have any more misunderstandings.
Jack: Used to be Victor merely had to look at you. You were putty in his hands.
Nikki: Well, those days are long gone, thank heavens. I never want to be that person again, no matter what it costs me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brad: You think you might have a way to find out what Vctor's up to?
Damon: Assuming he's up to something.
Brad: That's a safe assumption.
Damon: If Jack is reading the signs correctly, and Victor is feeling confident for a specific reason--
Brad: I'd certainly like to know what that reason is.
Damon: We can't afford to stay complacent and risk being wrong. We need to stay a step ahead of him.
Brad: (Chuckles) now you're getting in the game. All right. Let's hear your idea.
Damon: Well, now... what would you say if I said the key might be Phyllis Abbott?
Brad: I'd say you'd better speak very softly around here.
Damon: Now I'm not saying she's Vitor's secret weapon or anything--
Brad: You better not, unless you have some very convincing proof.
Damon: She doesn't have to be an active ingredient, Brad.
Brad: No. She only has to know what Victor's up to.
Damon: Exactly.
Brad: And she just might, along with Victor and who knows how many others in his organization. Problem is, we can't just walk up to them and ask.
Damon: Miss Phyllis and I have a, uh... special relationship.
Brad: Yeah?
Damon: We only just started on it, but it shows a lot of promise.
Brad: Keep talking.
Damon: I know good chemistry when I feel it, Brad. It's what I do and I'm feeling it with Miss Phyllis.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Victor:
Victor: I know that.
Victor: Are you serious? I'm sorry to hear that.
Victor: I understand. Nikki just has to stop interfering, that's all.
Victor: By the way, how are things going with that arts council gala?
Victor: Why? Is Nikki giving you a hard time about that or what?
Victor: Well, you know the only reason she tells you that is because you're involved, because I know that she hates the event. She can't stand the woman who runs it.
Victor: But I think that you should still accept that position. I really do. It will give you and Nicholas a chance to get to know an entirely different set of people.
Victor: You bet I do. Nicholas and I would not have suggested it otherwise. Of course you can.
Victor: Anyway, I have got to get going.
Victor: Uh, I'm glad we had a chance to talk.
Victor: Hmm.
Victor: Well, maybe sometime in the future we'll have another chance.
Victor: I would, too.
Nick: What the hell are you doing here?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack: I take it your relationship with Victor is still strained.
Nikki: That's putting it mildly.
Jack: You want to talk about it?
Nikki: I'd rather not.
Jack: Hey, who knows? Maybe I could help.
Nikki: Jack, thanks. It's not your problem. I don't want to get you in the middle of it.
Jack: Well, is it family? Come on. Talk to me.
Nikki: I'm being alienated from them.
Jack: Who?
Nikki: All of them. It's happening more and more every day.
Jack: Because of your association with Jabot?
Nikki: They treat me like a traitor. You have any idea how horrible that feels to be outcast in your own home?
Jack: Nikki, listen--
Nikki: I mean, I don't deserve that. I have worked damn hard to get where I am. I don't think I should have to choose between my job or my family!
Jack: But if you had to choose, you'd choose your family.
Nikki: What are you getting at?
Jack: Nikki, I know how much your career means to you, and God knows we would miss you around here, but if this is costing you this much...
Nikki: Jack!
Jack: Maybe it's time to walk away from Jabot.
Nikki:
How can you say that? This is my life, and I'm not going to let other people try
to run it--not Victor, not
Jack: Nikki, listen to me.
Nikki: You listen to me. I have made a commitment to this company, and the company has made a commitment to me, and I am not gonna bail just because we've hit some bad times. I know Victor would love that. Oh, my God. He would probably go on television and tell the whole world that his wife no longer has confidence in Jabot. Well, I'm not going to be manipulated. I am not gonna be used, not by Victor, not by anybody.
Jack: Okay. Then we forge ahead.
Nikki: We certainly will, and we're gonna win this.
Jack: We're gonna do more than win this, Nikki. We're going to blow Newman Enterprises out of the water. I'm gonna be real honest with you here. I need your help. I know this man is your husband, but this is personal now. Somehow, some way, I am going to bring that man to his knees this time. I promise you that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Victor: I came here looking for you.
Nick: Really?
Nick: When you heard I wasn't here, you should have left.
Victor: Son, we are talking about you, your mother and the tension that she's causing in your family.
Nick: You had to talk about that alone, did you?
Victor:
I'm telling you, I came looking for you. I did not seek out
Nick: Yeah. I heard you the first time. Look, I've asked both of you to stay away from each other. Now maybe you don't understand, but when I see you two together, it reminds me of what happened before.
Victor: Son, Sharon is right about that. She and I both have apologized to you repeatedly, and I've told you this would never happen again.
Nick: Yet you both refuse to do the one thing that I have asked, and that is to stay away from each other.
Victor: Don't you think that's pretty unreasonable, considering that we live on the same property?
Nick: Don't you call me unreasonable. You don't know what you've put me through. You don't care about anyone else's feelings.
Victor: I think we'd better end this conversation right now. Obviously, there's no chance of getting through to you. I'll see you at the office.
Nick: I'll be there.
Victor: And you'd better come with a different attitude.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael: Oh, shyster? I'll have you know it's Mr. Shyster.
Phyllis: I'm just kidding.
Michael: Well, I'm here waiting for Victor.
Phyllis: Hmm.
Michael: What are you doing here?
Phyllis: Well, I'm waiting for Victor, too. I'm working on the site. I e-mailed him some things, and he hasn't gotten back to me.
Michael: Hmm. must not have liked it.
Phyllis: Oh, no, he's more of a paper and pen person.
Michael: Oh, so you just dropped by to show him how to download your files and open them. I think that's cute.
Phyllis: No, he knows how to do that. He just gets busy with other things.
Michael: I still think it's cute.
Phyllis: Oh, well, thanks. Did he, uh, ever tell you what he wants you to do for him?
Michael: No, not yet.
Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Is that what your meeting's about?
Michael: Maybe, or maybe he just wants to remind me that I'm something he found on the bottom of his shoe, and I'm lucky he's allowing me to live.
Phyllis: And, of course, you have no problem with that?
Michael: (Chuckles) he is paying me twice my rate. All me names all day for that kind of money.
Phyllis: Wait a second. Wait. He's paying you twice your rate?
Michael: I didn't tell you that. You didn't hear it from me.
Phyllis: That's none of my business, but I don't believe you.
Michael: I swear. It's--
Phyllis: No, not about the money, because I know Victor Newman wouldn't have somebody on the payroll if they're doing nothing. So tell me, what does he have you doing?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick:
Nick: You don't?
Nick: You don't think things are better?
Nick: So now I'm being paranoid?
Nick: How do I avoid it?
Nick: And I will regret to my dying day that I ever saw it, but I just can't shake it.
Nick: I just don't want to be blindsided like that again.
Nick: Once trust is broken, it's difficult to get back.
Nick: If you were me, would you?
Nick: What?
Nick: What are you talking about? I've given you every chance.
Nick: I don't know... but I do know that I will never trust him again.
Brad: (Chuckles) when I tried to get you involved in the politics of the situation, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind.
Damon: What wasn't?
Brad: You trying to seduce your boss' wife.
Damon: I ain't trying to seduce anybody.
Brad: So she's just going to talk to you? Just talk?
Damon: Why not?
Brad: Well, for one thing, she's loyal as hell to Newman.
Damon: But she's married to Jack, and that marriage is under stress.
Brad: What are you saying?
Damon: I'm saying the woman might need a friend, someone to confide in.
Brad: Well, she does relate better to men than women.
Damon: That was my impression.
Brad: But even if she's furious with Jack, why would she open up to you about what secrets Victor has up his sleeve?
Damon: Reciprocity, Brad. I win her trust, start talking about life at Jabot, she'll open up. All in confidence, right?
Brad: I don't know. I don't know. It sounds good on paper, but you and Phyllis don't exactly cross paths. How are you going to sneak up alongside a smart woman like that without setting off any alarms?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick: What are you confused about?
Nick: What do you mean?
Nick: I want you to put that out of your mind, okay? There's nothing for you to worry about.
Sharon: When you accepted your father's offer to prepare you to run Newman Enterprises one day, I thought that meant it would be like a new beginning... that you were going to try to put aside your differences with your father and to rebuild that relationship.
Nick: Look, whatever I feel about Victor Newman, I still have an empire to protect. Now I will never trust that man again, but that company is my heritage, it's my future-- mine and our kids. But if you're expecting some big embrace between me and my dad, and everything's gonna be cool, then you're expecting too much because that is not gonna happen.
Nick: Now I don't want to talk about this anymore, all right? I'm gonna go get some air.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael: Well, let's see, one, I don't know...
Phyllis: Oh.
Michael: And two, I wouldn't tell you if I did.
Phyllis: Why not?
Michael: I told you before; I got the distinct impression that whatever motivated Victor Newman to hire me-- his least favorite person in the solar system-- it's not for popular consumption.
Phyllis: Well, what am i now to you, chopped liver?
Michael: Yes, a nice piece of chopped liver on rye with a side of buttermilk.
Phyllis: God, don't, don't don't, don't, I'm serious. I want to know.
Michael: So do I. When Victor Newman puts an ad in the newspaper welcoming me to the Newman Enterprises family and details my planned activities and sketches out his ambitions for my future, then you'll know. Hell, then I'll know. Don't you get it? I'm as much in the dark as anyone else.
Phyllis: So--so you think whatever it is he has you doing might be nefarious?
Michael: I love the word "nefarious."
Phyllis: Nefarious.
Michael: Say it again.
Phyllis: Nefarious.
Victor: Sorry I'm late.
Phyllis: Oh. Uh, no problem, Victor, at all. Listen, um, did you get the, um, graphics that I uploaded to you?
Victor: As a matter of fact, I downloaded it and looked at it one screen at a time, and have to tell you, I'm very impressed. Keep on going in that direction.
Phyllis: Mm-hmm.
Victor: Now, Mr. Baldwin, can you and I have a chat?
Phyllis: Oh, I suppose you want me to leave so you can talk alone, right? Although I must tell you, I am interested in the nature of your meeting.
Victor: Thank you for stopping by, Phyllis.
Michael: Good-bye, Phyllis.
Michael: Victor, Phyllis isn't the only one curious about what you have in mind for me, and since I'm more or less directly affected, I'd like to know, too. What do you say?
Victor: All right.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick: Don't you?
Nick: Look, I'm almost done, all right?
Nick: Could I please finish my workout?
Nick: What's your problem?
Nick: Whatever.
Nick: So?
Nick: You know, maybe I will leave.
Nick: Why?
Nick: What about it?
Nick:
You know what? I couldn't care less why Dad hired
Nick: I'm serious. Why would I care? He can hire whoever he wants.
Nick: How would I know?
Nick: Look, dad hasn't told me anything, and I haven't asked. I already see him more than I like.
Nick: Sure. Why?
Nick: Strange?
Nick: I don't know what you're talking about.
Nick: We're talking now.
Nick: I'd rather not talk about it.
Nick: You've made your position on the subject very clear.
Nick: Why not?
Nick: Which it is.
Nick: Changed my mind. Is that a crime?
Nick: What do you want me to say, Vick? I reassessed the situation.
Nick: I'm gonna take a shower, go to work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damon: I'm not saying Phyllis and I are old friends, Brad. We met once.
Brad: But there was this... chemistry?
Damon: Yeah. A sense of a certain...
Brad: That if she weren't married...
Damon: Sure, something like that.
Brad: From her end, too?
Damon: Enough to fuel a conversation.
Brad: This is dangerous, Damon. Jack finds out about this, you're history, pal.
Damon: But I have you on my side.
Brad: We're talking about the man's wife.
Damon: You give me the red light, I won't do it.
Brad: Phyllis does shoot from the hip. If you work her a little bit, who knows what information she might give up about Victor and what he's up to.
Damon: What do you say?
Brad: (Sighs) be careful.
Damon: Sure.
Brad: Listen, they're gonna launch this product line next week. So whatever you're gonna do, you have to do it now.
Damon: Well, let's see. Jack's back in his office working late. I wonder what Miss Phyllis is doing this evening.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack: (Sighs)
Nick: Jack, you busy?
Jack: Yeah, I'm busy as hell.
Nick: I could come back.
Jack: No, no, no, never too busy for you. Come on in. Hey, you kept the beard. I like it.
Nick: Thanks. Yeah, you know, it's a little something different.
Jack: Yeah, I like it. So what brings you by?
Nick: Just checking in.
Jack: Terrific. How's it going?
Nick: It's okay.
Jack:
Nick: She's okay.
Jack: Kids?
Nick: Ah, they're great.
Jack: Job?
Nick: It's okay.
Jack: Oh, back to "okay" there. Still working with your dad?
Nick: Yeah, you know, I'm--
Jack: Please.
Nick: Thanks. Letting him mentor me up showing me all the ropes, the big ropes.
Jack: Well, your dad knows where the big ropes are, he knows how to use them. You got to hand him that much. So you're sticking with the plan to learn to take over the reins of Newman enterprises.
Nick: Yeah, it's an offer you don't get every day.
Jack: Can I assume the conversation we had awhile ago about burying the hatchet with your dad had something to do with this?
Nick: Well, I haven't buried the hatchet, but I am letting him mentor me.
Jack:
And
Nick: Very mad. Feels passed over.
Jack: So problems with your sister, huh?
Nick: Yeah.
Jack: But you're sticking with the plan.
Nick: Yep.
Jack: And the plan is...?
Nick: Jack, come on.
Jack: Hey, hey, hey, it's your business. It's just we once had a conversation about, well, accepting the present as a means of fortifying the future.
Nick: I'm taking things one step at a time. There are a few more things I need to learn before I decide what to do with the big picture.
Jack: I think that's wise. On the other hand, if your father accomplishes what he hopes to accomplish in the next few weeks, your old pal jack is gonna be the proud owner of a pile of ashes that used to be jabot cosmetics.
Nick: And my mother could lose every dollar that she calls her own, every cent that keeps her independent from my father.
Jack: Make no mistake about it, Nicholas, you work for your dad, you learn from him, you follow his practices, you build his designs, you're gonna have some blood on your hands.
Nick: I'm aware of that, and that's why I'm here. I've learned something, something that will have a direct impact on jabot, I'm certain of it. My father has hired Michael Baldwin. Now I don't know what for, but that's what worries me most.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Victor: Let me preface this by saying, the less you know, the better.
Michael: Victor, I disagree. It's impossible for me to work for you effectively without knowing the reason you hired me in the first place.
Victor: Let me remind you that you agreed to function the way I want you to function. I will make available to you the information that you need to have, no more. I control the flow, all right?
Michael: No, no, how would you expect me to work within those confines? I need information.
Victor: You're a lawyer. You know sometimes it's to your advantage to know very little. That way, you have deniability.
Michael: So I was right. You want me to operate outside of the law.
Victor: Inside, outside-- in the world of business, Mr. Baldwin, those lines sometimes are blurred.
Michael: All right. I want to know. You have to tell me. I mean, the money's great, but I need to be able to sleep at night.
Victor: Oh, you're telling me that you have a conscience.
Michael: Yes, believe it or not. It's important that I be able to look myself in the face. It's also important that I keep my law license. So you tell me, or I'm gonna give you back your retainer, I'm gonna walk out that door. What is it you want me to do? What?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next on "The Young and the Restless"...
Brad: I'm telling you, Phyllis is a major tigress.
Damon: Well, now it really becomes a challenge, doesn't it?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
