Nick: I, uh, finished up at the office. I didn't feel like staying.
Nick: It's hot in here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: Oh, I was hoping it would be you.
Victor: Who else could it be?
Nikki: I don't know. I was afraid to guess. Too much bad news has come through that door today.
Victor: Well, I'm sorry, sweetheart. I promise I have some good news, though.
Nikki: Great. I need to hear something positive.
Victor: There was a call today asking about you hosting the Genoa City Arts Council Gala.
Nikki: Oh, good God! I said positive.
Victor: I'm not finished yet. I told you I have some positive news.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Esther: I still don't get it, Mrs. C. Why don't you want Jill knowing that you can talk?
Kay: Have... my... reasons.
Esther: Oh, I get it. You want to see if she'll be able...
Jill: No, don't let me stop you. The doctor said the talking to her was good.
Esther: Like you care.
Jill: You know, Esther, I meant what I said before. I think it's time for you to seek other employment.
Esther: But Mrs. Chancellor--
Jill: Mrs. Chancellor doesn't need you.
Esther: Oh, who's going to take care of her--you?
Jill: I'll hire a pro-- somebody who, in addition, will treat me with some respect.
Esther: Oh, that'll last about a week, till she gets to know you.
Jill: That's it. You're out of here.
Esther: You can't fire me.
Jill: Actually, Esther, I can. Now you can send somebody over to pack you up and ship your things off to wherever, but right now, you irritating little gnat, I want you gone.
Esther: Mrs. C.?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael: I wish Chris hadn't called Detective Weber. Let's hope she's ready for his questions. That man can be a bulldog sometimes.
Paul: You know, normally, he's a pretty decent guy, but he's so far off base... ouch. ...Focusing his entire investigation on Chris.
Michael:
I wonder if he learned that she was up at
Paul: No, I don't think so, not unless someone saw the car, saw her sleeping by the side of the road, or, uh, if your friend-- your fisherman friend called the police.
Michael: Otis? No. He's much more anxious about cleaning his boat than anything else.
Paul: Then maybe I should drive up there and try to figure out what happened.
Michael: Why would you do a thing like that?
Paul: Well, you said yourself there were no fish scales on the boat, just blood.
Michael: Yeah, so?
Paul: Well, if it was human blood, we need to know more, somehow prove that it was just a matter of Chris being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Michael: I don't think we should call any more attention to that little episode.
Paul: You're just worried about your own skin, aren't you?
Michael: What the hell do you mean by that?
Paul: Your little maneuver-- destroying the evidence.
Michael: Look, I did what I did to protect Christine. You want Weber to dig around to find something you wish he'd rather hadn't?
Paul:
Michael: What do you mean?
Paul: If it turns out that Isabella was murdered... do you honestly believe that Chris could have killed her?
Michael: What, suddenly now you're the grand inquisitor? Look, I told you I did what I thought was necessary to keep Christine out of this mess.
Paul: Right, but you doubt her innocence, don't you?
Michael: There are some disturbing facts here.
Paul: Such as?
Michael: Oh, such as the fact that Isabella could press Christine’s buttons more than anyone else, the fact that there was this confrontation where Isabella actually is attacked by Christine. There's a fishing boat, a cell phone dropped at the scene, memory loss, waking up by the lake. God only knows what Weber would do if he got his hands on any of this.
Paul: What does your gut tell you?
Michael: That Christine doesn't have it in her.
Paul: Exactly.
Michael: Which is why I don't see any reason that the good detective should be told anything that he doesn't have to know.
Paul: Great, so at least we agree on something. The problem is Chris can end up telling him herself.
Michael: Yeah, she's still pretty spacey. She may have already forgotten the entire--
Paul: You know, if Weber starts asking the right questions, you know Chris. If she thinks there's something out there, some evidence, if she's--
Michael: She'll keep quiet, even if it hurts her.
Paul: So what do we do?
Michael: We just keep thinking good thoughts. I mean, that's just going to have to be a bridge we cross if and when we have to.
Chris: What bridge is that?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jill: Esther, what is keeping you? I want you to leave this minute.
Esther: Well, I'm not going to. I will go up to my room and leave you with your mother.
Jill: Don't say that.
Esther: Get used to it, Jill.
Jill: Will you pack when you're up there, 'cause I'm not kidding. Your time here is finished! Okay... mother dear. We'll see about this feeding business. How hard can this be?
Jill: All right. Here's the little airplane, coming in for a landing. Open up the hangar. Please, open up the hangar. Damn it, open up!
Jill: Ah, that's better. See? We don't have to like this, but we can get the job done.
Jill: Oh, god! You pig! Oh, how disgusting! Oh, this is gross!
Esther: Jill, what is going on?!
Jill: This woman-- she spit food all over me! Ohh! I'm not going to do this! Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. Nobody can expect me to do this. I'm not doing it. Ohh!
Esther: You nailed her, huh, Mrs. C.?
Kay: My own child. Child. Ohh... I hate... her. Hate... her.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: Please don't tell me you said yes.
Victor: Well, what if I told you that we found someone else to do it for you?
Nikki: Oh, thank you, god. Hallelujah. Oh. I mean, it's nothing against the arts. I just cannot stand that woman who runs it. What is her name?
Victor: Sweetheart, I told you, don't worry about it. I took care of it, all right? I know you don't like to do it.
Nikki: Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Ooh, you are still my hero. So... who's, uh, who's my replacement?
Victor:
Your son and I talked about it, and we thought that it might be a good idea if,
um, if
Nikki:
What?
Victor: Yeah. It would give her an opportunity to, you know...
Nikki: Are you kidding me?
Victor: I thought--
Nikki: The last thing that woman needs is more opportunities.
Victor: Why are you so upset? I thought you would be relieved.
Nikki:
Well, I was, until you mentioned
Victor: Oh, sweetheart, for heaven's sake. Don't get so upset about that. (Telephone rings)
Nikki: Well, I-- just let it ring. Let it ring, please. (Ring)
Nikki: It'll go to voice mail.
Nikki's voice: You have reached 555-0143. Please leave a message.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick: So how was your day?
Nick: What's that mean?
Nick: I warned her. Did she hassle you again?
Nick: You shouldn't have to deal with that.
Nick: Yeah, a beer sounds good.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris: What's going on?
Paul: Nothing. We were just talking.
Chris: I must have fallen asleep.
Paul: Well, you probably needed your rest.
Chris: Has Detective Weber called back?
Paul: No, not yet.
Michael: While we have some time, I would like to discuss how to handle him.
Chris: I'm not sure I like the sound of that.
Michael: It's just like court, Christine. It's how you spin things, how you answer questions.
Chris: What's wrong with the truth?
Michael: Nothing. I just think there are certain things Detective Weber doesn't need to know.
Chris: Such as?
Michael: Such as your whereabouts until you got back here to this apartment last night.
Chris:
I don't remember anything until I woke up out by
Michael: Well, that's one more thing I wouldn't mention to Detective Weber.
Paul: Really? Why not? I mean, if she stonewalls Weber, it's only going to make him more suspicious.
Michael: Well, what's the alternative? We're going to lie to the man? I thought we agreed we need to buy time here, all right?
Chris: Why can't I just tell him I don't remember?
Michael: No, no. Even to people who believe in your innocence, that’s too convenient. You tell Weber that, he's never going to leave you alone.
Paul: Michael's right. It'll just make him relentless.
Michael: Look, play it safe. Try to keep your answers short and sweet.
Chris: So you're basically telling me to say nothing.
Paul: Yeah, pretty much.
Michael: Look, Christine, I'm not asking you to lie. I'm just asking you to be discreet with the details. You know, it’s... so, uh, what happened to your arm?
Chris: Oh, a few scratches. Nothing serious. Olivia's doctor friend bandaged them up for me.
Michael: How long have you had them?
Chris: I, uh, noticed them when I got home last night.
Paul: Where did they come from?
Chris: I have no idea. Why? You think they could mean something, don't you?
Michael: I didn't say that. I just think its one more thing that I wouldn't mention to Detective Weber. Now promise me. Nothing about the scratches, right?
Chris: All right. (Doorbell rings)
Paul: Who is it?
Hank: It's Detective Weber. I know Christine is home, Paul, so, please, open the door.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki:
Look, I know you want to do right by Nicholas, but do you really think
Victor: What she lacks in experience, she can make up with enthusiasm.
Nikki: You are placing far too much trust in her.
Victor: Well, you remember the time when people said the same about you.
Nikki: (Sighs) this isn't about me.
Victor: I think it is high time that we welcome our daughter-in-law back into our family.
Nikki:
Why? Why? This is not some new and improved
Victor: I disagree with you. I am for rewarding her progress rather than punishing her for her past mistakes, all right?
Nikki: Oh, my god. This is the same old story. Don't you see? She's trying to drive a wedge between us.
Victor: What I see is your vendetta against the woman who is trying to heal our family.
Nikki: Heal? Heal or control?
Victor: Heal, damn it! It's a moot point anyway. Our son will make the choice, all right? She's back in our family. Deal with it. (Telephone rings) (Ring)
Nikki: Yes?
Esther: Uh, Nikki. It's Esther. Come quick. Something's going on with Mrs. Chancellor.
Nikki: I'll be right there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack: I can recommend a dry cleaner.
Jill: Don't start with me, Jack, okay? Just don't start.
Jack: Oh, dear. Bad day?
Jill: You don't know the meaning of the phrase. If you know what's good for you, you will just leave me the hell alone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul: We were expecting you to call first.
Hank: Well, given Christine’s ability to slip away these past few days, I decided it'd be best to come by in person.
Chris: I'm sorry we kept missing each other.
Hank: Well, I'm glad we finally get a chance to talk.
Michael: Maybe you can clear something up for me first.
Hank: What's that?
Michael: This urgent need to talk to Chris--is she suspected of being involved in the Isabella Williams disappearance?
Hank: Are you asking as a friend or Christine’s attorney?
Chris: Michael's representing me.
Michael: Given the circumstances, Chris is more comfortable with Paul and me here.
Hank: I understand your presence, counselor, but I don't see why Paul--
Chris: Look, either both of them stay, or I'm not going to cooperate.
Hank: Is there some reason why you're taking the hard line, ma'am?
Paul: Well, I think you really started it, Hank, by implying that Chris was trying to avoid you.
Hank: Well, I'm sorry if I gave you that impression, Paul. All I want to do is ask her a few questions.
Michael: Ask away.
Hank: Why don't you take a seat, Mrs. Williams? So you mind telling me where you've been today?
Chris: I had a couple of appointments.
Hank: Mind telling me where?
Chris: Personal. Doctors' appointments.
Hank: Okay. When did you schedule them?
Michael: How the hell is that relevant?
Hank: Okay, Mr. Baldwin, I'll pass on that one for the moment and ask a question I'm sure you'll agree is relevant. I'd like to know exactly what you've been doing from the time Isabella Williams disappeared until the moment I walked in this apartment, ma'am.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack: So let me guess. This bad mood of yours have anything to do with your recent discovery of a, uh, discrepancy in the historical record?
Jill: Gee, you think? Can you believe it? I am Katherine Chancellor's daughter.
Jack: God, that is a humdinger, I'll hand you that.
Jill: Yes, it is a kick in the head.
Jack: Well, is it really that bad?
Jill: Oh, my God. It's worse. Could I have a little empathy here, please? What if you'd just discovered that you were Victor Newman’s illegitimate son? Wouldn't you feel like fate had played some kind of big, fat joke on you?
Jack: Yeah, I guess I would, but isn't the whole point of a joke a good laugh? I mean, at the big jokes, the karmic jokes? Sometimes all you can do is laugh.
Jill: You know what? I'm not in the mood for a philosophical seminar right here in the middle of my office. What I need is sympathy or spot remover, and if you don't have either one, would you please go?
Jack: Spot remover? What happened?
Jill: Oh, god, it's too disgusting to talk about.
Jack: Forget I asked.
Jill: No.
Jill: Jack, this isn't going to work. I cannot be her daughter. I'm going to renounce my genes. I'm going to disown her in any way I can. The hell with biology. I cannot be Katherine Chancellor's daughter.
Jack: I don't think you have a choice. You know what? Maybe there's an aspect to this whole thing that you have not given full consideration to.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: Oh, just let me look at you. Esther says we have quite a miracle on our hands.
Kay: Ha-hands.
Nikki: Yes. My God, you--you understand. You can speak.
Esther: She sure can.
Nikki: I'm so happy. This is the best news that I could have gotten. I really needed to hear something positive.
Kay: Wrong?
Nikki: No, no, no. We are not-- we're not going to do this. We're not going to talk about me, not when you have something so unbelievable to deal with.
Kay: Jill...
Nikki: Esther told me. I just can't believe it, that Jill is your daughter.
Kay: Jill... no... t-tell... Jill?
Nikki: I know, I know, I know. Esther said you don't want Jill to know that you can speak, but, Katherine, I don't understand that.
Kay: M-m-makes me... si-sick. Hate... her. Hate... her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick: Thanks.
Nick: Yeah, it did.
Nick: It's one of life's little mysteries.
Nick: It was all right. You know, met with dad.
Nick: Fine.
Nick:
Listen, before I forget, there's the black tie gala thing coming up. It's for
the
Nick: Yeah, well, mom used to chair it, but I guess right now she's a little too busy with Jabot. So would you have any interest in doing it?
Nick: No, actually chairing it, being the hostess.
Nick: Well, dad suggested it, you know, since mom wants out.
Nick: Well, you'd have tons of help, and all the people are really cool, plus it's for a good cause.
Nick: The lady you need to get in touch with is Agnes Sorenson. Mom's never really had any use for her, but I've met her a few times. She's all right.
Nick: I was just passing along the message.
Nick: Well... of course you can.
Nick: He gave me his ethics lesson 101. "Screw unto others." You know, I shouldn't even say that. I mean, I was barely listening.
Nick: I was a little distracted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul: There you go.
Hank: Thank you. This heat won't let up. Okay, let's begin with the day that Isabella disappeared.
Paul: Well, Chris was at my mother's house.
Chris: Mary had been drinking. She left without my realizing it. When I found out she was gone, I went looking for her.
Hank: Where did you g after you left Mrs. Williams' house?
Michael: She just told you.
Hank: I mean specifically.
Michael: You want her to tell you every street she drove down while she was hunting for Mary Williams?
Hank: Yes, precisely.
Chris: I don't know. I drove around the neighborhood, I guess.
Hank: You drove around the neighborhood. How long did you drive around?
Chris: I'm not sure.
Hank: Was it still dark when you stopped? Was the sun coming up? I mean, surely you can give me a rough estimate.
Paul: You know, Hank, she was worried about my mother driving under the influence. I mean, she's not going to remember everything.
Chris: I told you what you wanted to know.
Hank: Well, it seems to me that you're being rather vague.
Chris: I am answering the best way I can.
Michael: Ease off, okay?
Hank: All right. Where did you go when you finished searching for Mrs. Williams?
Chris: I went to sleep.
Hank: So you came home, went to bed, that's what you're telling me?
Chris: Not exactly.
Hank: What do you mean?
Chris: I went to sleep in my car.
Hank: You went to sleep in your car?
Chris: Look, it had been a long and trying week. I hadn't slept in days. I didn't want to drive in a less-than-alert condition, so I pulled off the road.
Hank: I see. And where did you pull off to?
Chris: I'm not exactly sure. A wooded area somewhere out of town.
Hank: And when you woke up?
Chris: I came home and went to bed.
Hank: But according to Mr. Williams, that was--
Chris: That was the next evening.
Hank: So you slept in your car the whole night and most of the next day? Were you alone the whole time?
Michael: Okay, I think that's enough questions for now. This interview's over.
Hank: Well, what happened to your arm, ma'am?
Paul: You know, that cactus is a very treacherous plant if you get too close. It got to me earlier.
Hank: Is that it? Is that how you hurt your arm?
Chris: No, Detective, it isn't.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: Katherine, you have to try not to be so upset.
Kay: Ni-nikki.
Nikki: I never knew any of this. All these years, you and I were like mother and daughter.
Kay: Secret.
Nikki: It's just amazing that you-- you had another child besides Brock.
Kay: Ashamed... ashamed.
Nikki: No. Don't be ashamed. My God, that was so long ago.
Kay:
Nikki: Jill thought that she was her birth mother at first, right?
Kay: Fraud.
Nikki: Oh.
Kay: Truth. Jill’s... my... child. Nikki... how... do I li-live with that? Ni-nikki?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jill: Jack, there's nothing to consider. No, I'll sign papers. I'll take oaths. I'll do whatever the law requires. I will not be Katherine Chancellor's daughter, and I can do that. I will just say, "get thee hence. I am not yours." I can do it. I will do it.
Jack: Yes, yes, you can do that. There's some part of the law you can use to cut away all ties, to renounce your birth parents. But think about this. Katherine Chancellor is a very wealthy woman. She's a majority stockholder in Chancellor Industries, never mind her other holdings, her other properties.
Jill: Well, it doesn't do me any good, does it?
Jack: What, have you disengaged your brain? Yes, I realize you're upset that your worst enemy just happens to be your mother, but I would like to think if it puts you in line to inherit half of what Katherine is worth, it might take some of the sting off, wouldn't it?
Jill: She despises me, all right? If it were up to her, I'd be out on the street like a stray cat.
Jack: Sadly, she may not have anything to say about any of this.
Jill: It's just ugly all the way around, and it's never going to change.
Jack: I can't help but wonder though, if God forbid anything should happen to Katherine, what it would feel like if your mother dies and you never said one loving word to her?
Jill: Wow. All this because I might stand to inherit a few bucks?
Jack: You and Brock, yes, but that is only part of it.
Jill: Go on.
Jack: You are part of a family. Jill, that's what inheritance is all about. You're part of a tribe, a clan that looks out for its own. And, yes, you have to make certain... allowances. You have to accept certain duties. You'll look out for the sick. You'll look out for the weak.
Jill: Okay, okay, okay. Stop preaching at me. I get you.
Jack: I am just trying to help you cop a better attitude about... your mother.
Jill: I know, and I appreciate it, okay? But now I'm going to go back to washing the baby food off of my blouse. But, Jack, I will try, okay? I promise. I'll try to look on Katherine in a better light.
Jack: Who knows? It may help you look at yourself in a better light. Don't forget to look at this.
Jill: Thank you, jack... I think. That was exactly what I needed to hear.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael: You don't have to answer that, Christine.
Hank: Is there some reason why you don't want her to, Mr. Baldwin?
Chris: I want to answer, Michael.
Hank: Go ahead, ma'am.
Chris: I don't know how I got hurt. The scratches were there when I got home last night.
Hank: Have you bathed or showered since coming home?
Chris: Of course.
Hank: Are you willing to come to the police station with me?
Paul: Hey, wait a minute. I don't think that's necessary--
Hank: Is there a problem, Paul?
Michael: Is this really necessary, or are you just trying to intimidate the woman?
Paul: Look, if you have any more questions, you can ask them right here.
Hank: I would like Christine to have a physical examination.
Michael: What in the world would you want--?
Chris: It's all right. I have nothing to hide.
Hank: Are you ready?
Chris: Let's get this over with.
Hank: Gentlemen.
Michael: Hank, we are coming with her.
Hank: Why? Christine said she had nothing to hide. Do you feel differently?
Michael: I just want to make sure her rights aren't violated.
Paul: You know, I thought all agreed that we'd be quiet about certain things.
Chris: I know, I know. I couldn’t. I couldn’t. God only knows what he's thinking. He's waiting. I better go.
Paul: Look, I'm going to be with you, Michael and I both. We'll be right by your side.
Chris: Okay.
Hank: You coming?
Chris: Yes, Detective, I'm coming.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki: Katherine... all of your life you have kept this secret. It must have been so hard for you to give up your baby.
Kay: No... choice.
Nikki: Well, at least now you know that your child survived. She thrived. She's even here by your side in this house.
Kay: Stuck... with... each... other.
Nikki: Well, in a way you've really been given a gift, Katherine.
Kay: Gift?
Nikki: Yes. Now you have two children, not one.
Kay: Two? Hate her!
Nikki: Oh, I know.
Kay: Hate.
Nikki: I know that Jill is the very last person you would have chosen, but she's what you got, and she may be able to bring something wonderful to your life, Katherine, if you can just find a way to get rid of the hatred.
Kay: You... you... be-believe... that?
Nikki: I do. I do. I think this could be a new beginning, a new era. But you have to do that, Katherine, and I know you can. I know how much family means to you. Now can't you just find it within yourself to... open your heart up to Jill, at least just give her the chance to be the daughter you never had?
Kay: You... you're the daughter never... had.
Nikki: Oh, Katherine. I love you.
Kay: L-love... you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jill: Yes, hello. This is Jill abbot speaking. Is Michael there? Do you know when he'll be back? I see. Okay, Chantal, would you please tell him when he comes in that it's very important I see him as soon as possible? Yes, I'll be over tomorrow morning. I know, dear, but this is very important to me, and time is of the essence.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick: Got a lot on my mind.
Nick: Oh, yeah?
Nick: Where are the kids?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next on "the young and the restless"...
Jill: Her estate is huge, and I have a right to half of it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lily: There's only one thing I'm sure about, mom, and if you go through with this wedding, we are all in for a lot more pain.
