(knock on door)
Nick: Come in.
Jack: Hey.
Nick: Hey, Jack.
Jack: How you doing?
Nick: Good. Been awhile.
Jack: Yeah, I'd have come by sooner. I didn't want to intrude.
Nick: You're here now. That's all that matters.
Jack: So where's Cassie?
Nick: She's getting some tests done.
Jack: How's she doing?
Nick: No real change.
Jack: She's not responding to anything?
Nick: We thought something was happening, but, uh.. evidently not.
Jack: Oh, I'm sorry
to hear that.
Nikki told me you're
taking her home. Yeah, I want to get
her home into some
familiar surroundings.
Jack: Makes sense. Maybe some of it will jar loose, huh?
Nick: That's what I'm praying for.
Jack: That's what we're all praying for, buddy. That little girl's got a lot of people rooting for her, and a wonderful family behind her. That's a blessing, believe me.
Nick: I'm not so sure. Family is the reason she's here.
Jack: Oh, come on. That can't be true.
Nick: Well, you're right, it's not the whole family, just one-- my father. He's the reason that she's in the hospital, the reason she may not come back to us.
Victor: Well, look at you.
Ashley: Hello.
Victor: Pretty soon,
you won't be able to get close
to that counter.
You'll have to take
some time off.
Ashley: Oh, no, I'm not going to be able to do that.
Victor: You ought to.
Ashley: Well, I guess you should have thought of me before you bought satine.
Victor: I didn't. My daughter did.
Ashley: Oh, I see. So now she's making important decisions like that without consulting you first?
Victor: So she bought satine, what's wrong with a little competition?
Ashley: Oh, yeah, I know all the economic books say that competition is healthy, but when it comes to a mega-conglomerate like Newman moving into a market they've never sold to before--
Victor: That isn't true. Brash & sassy has been in the industry for years.
Ashley: Well, let's get back
to the competitive aspect.
What is possibly healthy
about that--
the two of us battling it out,
spending millions of dollars
on research and development,
advertising and promotion
when there's not room
for two companies at the top?
Only one of us is gonna
be left standing.
V Victor: I mean, don't you enjoy a high-stakes poker game?
Ashley: Why are you trying to be so cute about this? If you just had to buy Victoria a new toy, couldn't it have been something else?
Trevor: Yes, sir, what can I get for you?
Brad: Uh--
Victoria: He'll have a chocolate martini.
Brad: It's a little early in the day for me.
Victoria: Spoilsport.
Brad: Can I get a large coffee to go, please?
Victoria: For here.
Brad: Okay, you heard the lady--for here.
Victoria: I'm just a one-woman peanut gallery.
Brad: And you're a bossy little thing, too, aren't you?
Victoria: You love it.
Brad: And definitely in a better mood than the last time I saw you.
Victoria: You know what, Brad? I'm gonna buy you that cup of coffee-- kind of as a consolation prize.
Brad: For what?
Victoria: Satine cosmetics. Oh, come on, don't tell me you're out of the loop.
Neil: You okay?
Phyllis: I'm fine.
Neil: So how's Kyle doing?
Phyllis: Kyle's fine. Why?
Neil: I just wondered. Last couple of months, you've been spending a lot of time at home with him. Most recently, you've been here 24/7. It must be hard for Kyle to manage without you.
Phyllis: Kids are adaptable,
Neil.
Neil: Yeah, but if you want to, you know, pick up the phone, give him a call, check in on him, it's fi--
Phyllis: Okay, okay, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What is this? What is this?
Neil: What is what? I just thought that you--
Phyllis: No, you just thought that I would have a problem being here while my stepson was at home with a sitter. Wasn't that what you were saying?
Neil: No. You do seem a little distracted.
Phyllis: That has nothing to do with Kyle. I'm totally capable of being a working mother, Neil, despite what you and Victoria may think.
Neil: I think you got it wrong.
Phyllis: That's why
you fired me, isn't it?
You doubted my commitment
to this company.
Neil: Should we get back to work?
Phyllis: Fine with me.
Victor: Well, if I had had
any idea that you were going
to be this upset--
Ashley: Oh, please. You could easily have foreseen my reaction.
Victor: Well, I didn't foresee your reaction. I mean, I anticipated some hostility from your brother and your husband.
Ashley: For the record, I'm not speaking for anybody here but myself.
Victor: So what, you asked me to come here to give me a tongue-lashing? I'm glad to see you, anyway.
Ashley: Thanks for nothing.
Victor: You gonna let this go? Let's please not make this personal. Our relationship goes beyond that, I think.
Ashley: Maybe I'm feeling
a little sorry for myself.
I just really wanted to enjoy
my pregnancy, you know,
maybe take a little time off.
Victor: Well, then you oughta and you should, you know.
Ashley: You are such a hypocrite. You know what I should do is just throw you out of here on your hard head.
Jack: Nicholas, this was an accident. You can't blame this on your father.
Nick: If we hadn't been arguing that day, Cassie never would have gone out on that pond. You don't know what that man's done to me, Jack.
Jack: I know you and your father have had problems lately.
Nick: He has ruined
everything in my life
that's worthwhile.
I can't even stand
the sight of him, much less
to be in the same room with--
Jack: Whoa, whoa, slow down a little bit. You can't afford to blow up like this. You can't. This doesn't do you any good. This doesn't do Cassie any good.
Nick: Sometimes I wonder if it's even worth it.
Jack: If what's worth it?
Nick: Family. It's supposed to be this big wonderful thing, but, man, I look around me and all I see is a bunch of messed up people and a daughter who's slipping away.
Jack: Nicholas,
listen to me.
Family is everything, and, yes,
it is worth fighting for.
Have I had differences with
my own family?
Huge differences.
In the end, those are
the people you can count on.
Nick: That may be true for you, but it's not for me.
Jack: Buddy, I don't begin to know what you're feeling right now, and I don't wish what you're going through on anyone, but you have to start taking a longer view. I know you and Sharon have had your problems lately. You have to put those behind you.
Nick: I wish I could, Jack, but Sharon's gone.
Jack: What do you mean she's gone?
Nick: Like, she's gone. I don't know where she is or when she's coming home.
Jack: She know about Cassie?
Nick: She took off before it happened.
Jack: Oh, my god.
Nick: Yeah,
it's an ugly story.
And it all started the day
I decided to try and get
my wife back.
Then it became painfully obvious
that it was too late.
Everything was just
messed up.
Sometimes you have to accept
the fact that nothing's
worth saving.
Jack: Oh, come on. I don't believe for one minute you feel that.
Nick: Jack, this isn't about me and Sharon anymore. I want her home for Cassie's sake. Her daughter is teetering between life and death, and Sharon doesn't know what's going on. And it all comes back to one person--my father. He is the reason that Sharon took off. He is the reason that she won't come home. s
Claire: I just cut my finger.
Brad: I know what's
going on.
Victoria: And you're still speaking to me?
Brad: Why wouldn't I be?
Trevor: Here you go.
Brad: Thank you.
Victoria: Wow, an open-minded person who works at jabot.
Brad: Ooh, better not let your mother hear you say that.
Victoria: We're talking about you now, Bradley. I mean, either you're open-minded or you're not too thrilled about your chances going head-to-head with our new division.
Brad: Well, that's one conclusion.
Victoria: You must realize how foolish it is going up against Newman enterprises. After all, we'll have carved out most of the market by the time you get your products on the shelves.
Brad: Wouldn't surprise me.
Victoria: You know, I could see you coming out against jabot's investing in this segment. I mean, given the way you've been talking.
Brad: Have I been talking?
Victoria: Am I putting words in your mouth? I don't think so. You're too smart a businessman not to realize the pitfalls.
Brad: Well, that's very kind of you. I appreciate the compliment. But you're wrong, Victoria.
Victoria: Am I?
Brad: Not only am I in favor of expanding our product line for women of color, I'm going to be running it.
Jack: Are you saying that Victor drove Sharon away somehow?
Nick: Look, Jack, I don't
really want to talk about it.
Jack: Okay, okay, so let's talk about you.
Nick: Bad topic.
Jack: You're a wreck.
Nick: I just feel like everything in my life has gone to hell.
Jack: Hey, you have everything in the world to live for.
Nick: You mean Cassie.
Jack: Yeah. Yeah, Cassie needs you. So does your son, without Sharon around.
Nick: I still can't believe she took off. I just don't know how she could do that.
Jack: Yeah, you would think she would stay in touch at least with the kids.
Nick: She wrote a letter.
She said she didn't think she
could be a very good mother
right now.
Jack: Wow. For her to say that, she'd have to be pretty traumatized.
Nick: Yeah, real traumatized.
Jack: And you blame your father.
Nick: Let's just say his hands are real dirty right now, and I don't think I can forgive him this time.
Jack: Listen, can I ask you a question? And you may not like this.
Nick: Go ahead.
Jack: Is this about you, or is this about Cassie?
Nick: What do you mean?
Jack: No matter how angry you get, Nick, victor's still your father.
Nick: Look, the only time I ever felt like I had a father was when you were married to my mother. Jack, you were always there for me.
Jack: Listen to me.
Your father loves Cassie.
He loves her.
Don't shut him out, not now.
She needs all the help
she can get right now.
Nick: Yeah, well, his help can be so destructive sometimes.
Jack: Look, I don't know what happened. I do know your father would never hurt Cassie. She needs him in her life right now. Don't shut him out, not now.
Nick: Look, Jack, you're right. You don't know what happened, and you say that I should just forget everything and put it all behind me. Well, trust me. It's easier said than done.
Ashley: Before you say it, this is not my hormones speaking.
Victor: Well, I wasn't gonna say that.
Ashley: That's a good thing. Don't, please.
Victor: I'd rather get
a tongue-lashing from you
any day, rather than not hearing
your voice.
Ashley: Oh, now don't try to charm me.
Victor: Oh, I wouldn't dare do that. So Abby's going to have a sibling?
Ashley: Uh, yeah.
Victor: So do you and Brad prefer a boy or girl?
Ashley: Oh, you know what? We'll be thrilled with whatever we get. Thanks for the meeting. I appreciate it.
Victor: Can we agree to compete without personal hostility?
Ashley: Well, I can only speak for myself, and we can try.
Victor: Good. And let's-- you need a calm state of mind, you know? And you need some rest.
Ashley: Right.
I'll do my best.
Victor: You know that you mean a lot to me.
Dru: Excuse me. Didn't mean to intrude.
Victor: I was just leaving. You take care of yourself. I mean it.
Ashley: Thanks for stopping by.
Victor: Drucilla, have a nice day.
Dru: Victor.
[Music throughout] that should do it. Do you see it?
Neil: Yep, sure do.
Phyllis: Anything else you want me to add?
Neil: No, no, no. This looks great.
Phyllis: So much for being distracted.
Neil: Yeah, listen, I'm sorry
about that.
You know, maybe I overreacted
a little bit, so...
Phyllis: No problem. We got it done. That's all that matters. (Telephone rings)
Neil: Thanks, Phyllis. I appreciate your hard work and effort. Yeah? Oh, can you make sure that Vicki gets a copy of that as soon as possible? Thanks. Bye.
Phyllis: I'm gonna split. Um...
Phyllis: Neil, could I ask you a question?
Neil: Yeah, sure.
Phyllis: Um... you and Dru, you're back together again, right?
Neil: Yeah, I guess you could say that.
Phyllis: Well, do you have a problem with her being a part of jabot?
Neil: I'm not exactly
thrilled about it.
Phyllis: But you're making the best of it.
Neil: What else can we do? Why?
Phyllis: Well, Jack feels now that Newman has acquired satine, and jabot has created its own line of cosmetics for women of color--
Neil: He feels there's a conflict of interest.
Phyllis: He wants me to quit my job.
Neil: And do what?
Phyllis: Work for jabot.
Neil: Jack offered you a job?
Phyllis: Not just a job, an amazing job. I'd be heading up an entire web component for their new line of course, marketing, sales, the works.
Neil: Phyllis, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the job you presently have here?
Phyllis: Well, yes, it is,
except I'm wanted there.
Neil: What did you tell him?
Phyllis: I told him no.
Neil: Well, if that's the case, then why are we even talking about this?
Phyllis: I've said too much already.
Neil: Hey, hey, hey. Is Jack pressuring you?
Phyllis: I can handle my husband, Neil.
Neil: No, I know your husband, and he can be a master manipulator.
Phyllis: Excuse me. That's not what this is about. It's about his family.
Dru: Well.
Ashley: Don't give me "well."
Dru: All right, then what the hell was that, or shouldn't I ask?
Ashley: Go ahead. Ask whatever you want.
Dru: Were you two
celebrating?
Does Victor now know that he's
the biological father of Abby?
Ashley: No, and if he ever found out, I'd know it came from you, and I'd kill you.
Dru: Well, you would die trying.
Ashley: I mean it, Drucilla.
Dru: You know, would you relax? He's not gonna hear it from me.
Ashley: What are you here for?
Dru: Well, um... I wanted to go over the presentation I may be making.
Ashley: Do I go to you when I'm formulating a product?
Dru: No, but I am the new kid on the block. I mean, don't you guys communicate?
Ashley: When it's appropriate, yes, we do.
Dru: Well, I thought it was
appropriate that I run by
my ideas around
a technical approach.
Ashley: You don't need to do that for this presentation, okay? What you need to focus on is letting us know what you feel you bring to the table-- your expertise, your contacts, that kind of thing. Are we clear?
Dru: Got it, boss.
Ashley: Good. Anything else?
Dru: As a matter of fact, there is. I was wondering if I could bring some of my own ideas to the table.
Ashley: Sure. Whatever you want. I mean, just don't get ahead of yourself. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Dru: Sage advice.
Ashley: I won't be there.
Dru: No?
Ashley: I have
a doctor's appointment.
Dru: I hope everything's all right. Well, uh...
Ashley: Good luck with your presentation.
Dru: Right. Okay. You know what, Ashley? I do have one question. You know, I'm still getting acclimated to the corporate side of the business. You know, I need some clarity here. Is it normal for the head chemist to be holed up in her lab with the CEO of her biggest competitor? I gotta tell ya. It just reeks conflict of interest. You know, you and Vic, you and Vic, it just...
Victor: What are you doing here?
Jack: I came by to see Nicholas, offer my support.
Victor: He has all the support he needs.
Jack: You think so?
Victor: Curious that you should show up here now.
Jack: Why do you say that?
Victor: I think you and I have managed rather successfully to keep our lives apart for quite some time now.
Jack: Victor, Nicholas was once my stepson. I know he's going through a difficult time, and I wanted to try to help.
Victor: And that's all it is?
Jack: Why would you doubt that?
Victor: Because I don't trust you, Jack Abbott, and you don't trust me. Now if the tables were turned, I'm sure that you would be looking for an ulterior motive, wouldn't you?
Jack: So what do you think it is, Victor, my ulterior motive for being
here?
Victoria: Well, I'll be damned. Score one for Bradley. You gave me just enough rope, didn't you?
Brad: Want your 2 bucks back?
Victoria: No, no, no, you enjoy that coffee, enjoy every swallow.
Brad: 'Cause it's the last one you'll be buying me?
Victoria: I think next time, we'll graduate to champagne. It'll be much better for toasting my success.
Brad: Ooh, pretty sure of yourself, aren't you?
Victoria: I gotta be. I'm going up against you now. Any sign of vulnerability...
Brad: And I'll go right for the kill.
Victoria: My father taught you well, maybe too well.
Brad: It's good seeing you
like this, back in charge.
Victoria: Didn't like me as a basket case, huh?
Brad: No, that was kind of a difficult time for both of us.
Victoria: Sitting at some bar, crying in our beers about our rotten relationships. I mean, I'm not putting words in your mouth again, am I? Never did say what was going on between you and Ashley.
Brad: No, I never did, did I?
Victoria: You know, I seem to remember that the last time we talked, we said the next time we ran into each other we would talk about your problems.
Brad: Hmm. You're not gonna hold me to that, are you?
Victoria: You just seemed really disillusioned. Surprised me a little bit, since I always thought you and Ashley were the perfect couple.
Brad: Well, then you'll be
happy to know, at least
I think you will, that we are
doing great, stronger than ever,
especially now that ash
and I are expecting.
Victor: I find it a little bit beyond coincidence that you should show up here right now.
Jack: Why do you say that?
Victor: Because you know damn well that our two companies are going head-to-head.
Jack: This has nothing to do with business. In fact, business is the farthest thing from my mind.
Victor: Is it?
Jack: Nicholas and I share a very special bond, whether you're willing to acknowledge that or not.
Victor: And that's why you're here, because of that special bond?
Jack: You be cynical all you want. There's a young man in there who thinks his life is falling apart in front of his eyes.
Victor: And did he tell you who he thinks is responsible?
Jack: I don't know that this
matters, but I told Nicholas
I think this is a time
family needs to pull together.
Victor: Is that what you told him?
Jack: I'm not sure it had an impact. It may sink in later.
Victor: I doubt that seriously. He's very bitter right now.
Jack: That part I don't understand.
Victor: You mean, he hasn't filled you in on the ugly details--
Jack: Only that he blames you for everything that's gone wrong in his life right now.
Victor: Unfortunately, not without reason.
Jack: Victor, is there anything that you could do to rectify the situation?
Victor: Don't think for a moment that I haven't been racking my brain about that.
Jack: I'm sure you have.
Look, is there any way
you could at least try
to track Sharon down?
Victor: We already asked Paul Williams to do that. I just have a feeling that she may not want to be found, which breaks my hear
Jack: Well, please know that I honestly wish you well, and that my thoughts and prayers are with Cassie's recovery and Sharon's safe return.
Victor: I believe you mean that. Have a nice day.
Neil: Okay, so what exactly does this have to do with jack's family?
Phyllis: All right, there's been some friction between the Abbotts and me.
Neil: What kind of friction?
Phyllis: Well, my working here has always been a sore spot.
Neil: Which has gotten worse, I bet.
Phyllis: Yes, it has.
This morning when I came down
for breakfast, they were all
eating in the dining room,
and they were talking about
business when I walked in.
They shut up right away.
Even Brad and Ashley were there.
I felt like an intruder
in my own home.
Neil: Well, sounds awkward if you ask me.
Phyllis: Yes, it was awkward, especially since lately, I've felt like I've become a part of that family, like I really... belong. What?
Neil: You said Jack wasn't manipulating you.
Phyllis: He's not.
Neil: He doesn't have to. He's got the whole family doing it for him.
Phyllis: What are you talking about?
Neil: Come on, Phyllis. When did Jack offer you this job?
Phyllis: This morning after breakfast.
Neil: Uh-huh.
Phyllis: What, uh-huh?
It's--he knew I was upset,
and he wanted to make things
easier on me.
Neil: Pretty convenient, don't you think?
Phyllis: What are you implying?
Neil: I'm not implying anything. I'm telling you straight out that unpleasantness you felt at breakfast, my bet is your husband, the manipulator, orchestrated the whole thing.
Phyllis: That's absurd.
Neil: Oh, is it really? Well, then let me ask you this. When was the last time that Ashley and Brad just happened to drop in on a weekday morning, especially when they're right in the middle of a major new launch?
Phyllis: No, no, no, no. You are way off base.
Neil: Am I? Well, you know
what I'm doing is I'm just
trying to give you an objective
take on the situation.
Phyllis: You are? Really?
Neil: Yes, I am.
Phyllis: I think you're trying to stir the pot. (Telephone rings)
Neil: No, I'm not.
Phyllis: And I don't appreciate that.
Neil: Yeah? Hold on. Phyllis, I'm sorry. I've gotta take this.
Phyllis: Yeah, well, I have to go.
Neil: Have a good day. Yeah, martin. Listen, the facility...
Why use dirty water
to clean your floor?
Victor: I understand Cassie is having some tests.
Nick: Yep.
Victor: Any change?
Nick: No.
Victor: Sorry to hear that.
Nick: Yeah, me too.
Victor: Any word from Paul Williams as to where Sharon might be?
Nick: No.
Victor: If anyone can find her, Paul Williams will.
Nick: If she wants
to be found.
Victor: I guess you're still holding me responsible for everything.
Nick: Look, I don't want to talk about that right now, all right? There's no point.
Victor: You know that I've only always wanted what's best for you.
Nick: Yeah, right.
Victor: You're my son. I love you, okay?
Nick: You have a strange way of showing it. You know, Jack stopped by.
Victor: Yeah, I saw him.
Nick: He was a real father to me once.
Victor: Are you saying that to hurt me or what?
Nick: And why would I want to do that?
Victor: You know what's going on with our two companies.
Nick: You want to make this
about business now?
Victor: We're gonna compete head-to-head. You know that.
Nick: What, are you worried that I'm gonna reveal some corporate secrets?
Victor: I'm just making you aware of the possibility.
Nick: How could I tell him anything? I've been told nothing.
Victor: Son, you have been told nothing because your priorities were elsewhere, understandably so.
Nick: Why don't you just admit it? You don't care about my opinion. You never have.
Ashley: How dare you?
Dru: You don't have to answer the question if you don't want to.
Ashley: I'm fascinated. Where the hell do you get off?
Dru: I'm still trying
to get my legs in this
corporate business.
You know, if you and Victor
hugging and kissing is the way
that jabot does business then--
Ashley: Oh, we were kissing? You saw us kissing?
Dru: Well, I saw you hugging, besides, that's not the point.
Ashley: Oh, it is the point. Because, you see, Victor and I are friends and we are entitled to have our friendship.
Dru: I'm just trying to get some clarity here. Everyone thinks that I am some security risk because I live with my ex-husband.
Ashley: I don't live with Victor. And I'm an Abbott. My loyalty is unquestioned.
Dru: And mine isn't?
Ashley: You're damn right it isn't. You've worked here for what, all of two minutes? You don't have any loyalty towards us.
Dru: First of all,
I worked for jabot
ten years ago. And when I worked for jabot, I was hot, I was professional and I was loyal. And I took those attributes to Europe, Ashley, and I made a killing. Let me tell you something. When I would go to Paris and show up at the Georges Cinq or the Gustad or the Haussler in Rome, those bellboys and those managers were tripping all over themselves trying to get my luggage up to my suite. I was a rock star, a rap star, a movie star. I was--
Ashley: All right, I got it. You were a star.
Dru: All right, it dried up.
It's not fair, you know.
You got Sidney Poitier,
Bobby DeNiro,
the Rolling Sto--
the Rolling Stones--
you know they are old,
and they're still out there
rolling around all gray,
but we can't get old.
You see, it's worse for a model.
I want to tell you,
I knew this day was gonna come,
but I wasn't ready for it
when it did.
My phone stopped ringing.
My agent dumped me.
It got really quiet
and lonely.
I thought my life was over.
And then your brother Jack
called me.
He called me and he made me feel
alive again.
I just felt like I was smack-dab in the middle
of something important all over.
I gotta tell you something.
I didn't care about paparazzi.
All I cared about was that
I was attached to something
that I believed in.
Now I know you were born
into all this opulence,
but I wasn't, you see,
which makes me hungry
for it always.
I am not gonna jeopardize
this opportunity, okay?
Now about this security
business, you're worried about
keeping your secrets safe,
don't look to me.
I am not your problem.
You, missy, need to look
in the mirror.
Ashley: It was a nice speech, kind of made me cry. It's too bad words don't earn trust. Worshipped the sun
Victoria: You're expecting a baby? Wow, with Ashley!
Brad: Yep.
Victoria: Um, congratulations.
Brad: Thank you.
Victoria: When's she due?
Brad: Early fall.
Victoria: That's quite a turnaround.
Brad: You have no idea.
Victoria: Well, I'm really happy for you, Brad, I really am.
Brad: Thanks, Victoria. I'm pretty thrilled myself. So, um, let's talk about you. Your situation-- how's that going?
Victoria: Oh, that guy, he's not in the picture anymore. It was sad, but, um...
Brad: It's not meant to be.
Victoria: No.
Brad: Back in the game?
Victoria: Dating? Um, no. No, there's just too much going on.
Brad: Oh, come on, Victoria Newman still on the shelf, I don't believe it.
Victoria: Oh, you'd like that
wouldn't you, if I was all hot
about someone?
Distracted, less competition.
Brad: I just want you to be happy. You deserve it.
Victoria: Well, thank you. It'll happen someday.
Brad: But in the meantime, you're content to be channeling all those energies into kicking my butt.
Victoria: I'll drink to that.
Victor: What you said is not true. I've always valued your opinion.
Nick: That's bull.
Victor: What do you mean, "that's bull"?
Nick: Try history.
Victor: Son, I've always-- always involved you in any decision pertaining to Newman enterprises, you know that.
Nick: Whatever.
Victor: What do you mean,
"whatever"?
That's simply not fair
what you're saying.
Nick: You bought a company for Victoria. I was never consulted.
Victor: I see. So that is what this is about?
Nick: Well, in case my opinion counts for anything, I think it stinks.
Victor: Why do you think it stinks?
Nick: We don't have the chops to compete with jabot in cosmetics.
Victor: But that's why Victoria wanted to buy satine.
Nick: No, I think you did it out of spite for Jack.
Victor: You're totally wrong about that.
Nick: I don't think so. I also think you did it to humor Victoria.
Victor: Are you jealous
because I did this
with Victoria?
I mean...
Nick: That's what you think this is about, that I'm jealous of my sister?
Victor: I didn't say that.
Nick: You didn't have to. It's obviously how you feel.
Victor: Son, your sister wanted to, you know, expand her business into a different realm, that's all.
Nick: Well, then it must be the right thing too.
Victor: Well, she had very sound business reasons for making that decision.
Nick: You know, I wish I'd had half the support when I opened my coffeehouse.
Victor: But how can you compare these two situations? The coffeehouse was a totally different idea.
Nick: Yeah, because my idea was stupid, as you repeatedly told me.
Victor: No, it had nothing
to do with that.
It had to do with the fact
that you were working
at Newman enterprises.
I didn't think
you could do both.
Nick: Although Victoria, on the other hand, she could.
Victor: Wait a minute. What she's proposing will stay within the structure of our company.
Nick: It's her idea, and you're letting her run with it.
Victor: But I'd do the same for you.
Nick: I don't think so.
Victor: Well, bring me some proposal and then try me.
Nick: I'm not gonna do that, okay? I don't need your approval for survival.
Victor: Can't we get beyond this bitterness now?
Nick: No. That's not gonna happen.
Victor: You and I once were very close, you know.
Nick: You're not the man
I thought you were.
Victor: Maybe one day you'll understand.
Nick: Not after what you did. You and my wife like that... I will never understand. I'm gonna check on my daughter. When I get back, don't be here.
Jack: Hi.
Phyllis: Hi.
Jack: Just left Kyle. He's so sweet and innocent when he's sleeping, it's hard to tell he's a whirling dervish when he's awake.
Phyllis: How's Cassie?
Jack: Oh, no real change. Nicholas is a bit of a wreck. I wish I could help him. You see him and you think-- you count your blessings. What are you doing home?
Phyllis: I want to talk to you.
Jack: Is this about my offer?
I don't mean to pressure you.
It's a pretty sweet offer.
Phyllis: But you don't mean to pressure me.
Jack: Have you given it any thought?
Phyllis: Yes, Jack, I've given it a lot of thought.
