Reese: Well, I gave you some idea of the tests we were going to perform on cassie and what we hoped they'd reveal.

Nick: Whether there's a chance for a full recovery.

Reese: Or truthfully, nicholas, any recovery at all. We don't know how long cassie was lyinface-down in that pond. We do know that a very special inner reflex saved her from both drowning and freezing to death. Now what we needed to find out was whether the lack of oxygen had effectively destroyed the lines of communication between the body's nerve pathways and the brain. Now to test this, we applied various stimuli, and we looked for a response in cassie's brain waves.

Victor: And the results?

Reese: Yes, and that if she stays in this state much longer, what signs of neurological activity we've seen may begin to taper off. To what extent, I don't know.

Victor: In other words, we need to see improvement and soon.

Reese: Well, under the circumstances, I'd say it's much more likely that physical trauma is responsible for her condition.

Reese: I understand why you'd ask. My only advice is just don't go looking for unusual explanations.

Nick: There's nothing more you can do? There's no more tests?

Reese: Nicholas, the test results were good. We saw brain activity where some people would say we probably shouldn't have. Let's just try and focus on that.

Victor: Yeah. It sickens me as well. But I guess life ain't fair sometimes, is it? All we have to do is look at little cassie in there to know that's true.

Nikki: But you really think we're helping her situation by allowing nicholas to continue hating you?

Victor: Well, I'm hoping that sharon will come back.

Nikki: (Sighs) more and more I think that's a prayer that is not going to be answered. I really think we just need to cut our losses. Sharon is gone. But we... we can be there for cassie. We can be the united family that she needs. But we have to tell nicholas the truth.

Paul: It wasn't violent. I wasn't trying to hurt her.

Isabella: But you did. You must have. Otherwise she wouldn't have left town.

Nikki: Well, the worst thing is for nicholas to go on hating you. The longer sharon is gone, the more he's going to blame you. It's a vicious cycle.

Victor: Suppose I go to him and tell him the truth. You want me to go tell him that his wife felt so empty that she came on to his father? If I tell him, it's going to set the stage for further conflict and problems. Neither he nor sharon will be the kind of parents they ought to be to their kids.

Nikki: Well, I know you're not going to agree with this either, but I really wonder if sharon is such a good influence on cassie.

Victor: Well, she's still cassie's mother, though.

Nikki: I know, but what kind of mother is that that just disappears? No phone calls, no communication at all to see how her kids are doing. I mean, why are we protecting somebody like that?

Victor: I don't want to protect sharon. It's that I want to protect the family. I want to protect noah and cassie.

Sharon: I know, but, victor, the reality is, sharon's gone. She has abandoned her family. There's no other way to look at it.

Victor: But, darling, her kids still need their mother.

Nikki: Well, there are people around them that can be their family. We can be unified, and we will never abandon them. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that we just need to end this secret and just let the chips fall.

Victor: Please, don'T. Please, don't do it now.

Nikki: Victor, we have to.

Victor: No, not now. Don't you understand how devastated he is right now? His little girl in there is fighting for her life. She may face a fate worse than death. If I tell my boy the truth now, it'll destroy him. I know it'll kill him.
