Jack: Hi, baby.
Phyllis: Hey. Here you go.
Jack: Ooh, thank you.
Phyllis: Sure.
So you finally got kyle
to sleep?
Jack: Hey, we don't have to whisper.
Phyllis: Right. He was up all night.
Jack: Yeah, he's having rough time of it.
Phyllis: It wasn't just last night.
Jack: What can I say? I guess he's got his old man's stamina.
Phyllis: That's, um...
Jack: What?
Phyllis: Never mind.
Jack: Hey, this is gonna get easier, you know, for everyone. It is, sweetheart. It's only been a couple days.
Phyllis: Right. It's just, you know, it's killing me listening to him scream for his mommy every night.
Jack: Honey,
we have to give this some time.
It is all going to work out.
Hey, hey.
What's going through
that pretty head of yours?
Phyllis: Honestly?
Jack: Yeah. Yeah, honestly.
Phyllis: I can't help thinking that maybe we've made a huge mistake. (Knock on door)
Andy: Morning, sunshine.
Diane: Hi.
Andy: Hi? That's it? I come with your favorite sweet roll. I got coffee, and that's all I get--is "hi"?
Diane: I, um... I think I'm coming down with something.
Andy: Okay. Can I come in?
Diane: Well, I don't want you to catch it.
Andy: I think I've had my shots. I'll be okay.
Andy: Whoa, it kind of looks like your whole suite's coming down with something here.
Diane: You know what?
I'I'm really not in the mood
to be hassled, okay?
Andy: Okay.
Andy: Comhehere. Talk to me, okay? Would you come here and talk to me? What's going on?
Diane: Andy, I am... I am so miserable.
Andy: Come here. Come here. Talk to me. It's okay. It's okay.
Nick: Hey. You been here all night?
Nikki: I didn't want to leave her. I just went to the chapel. I didn't know what else to do.
Nick: Yeah. I feel so damned helpless. Where's victoria?
Nikki: I sent her home. She was exhausted.
Nick: Have you talked to miguel?
Nikki: Yeah, just now.
Nick: No word from sharon
Nikki: No. Honey... I wonder why you even care.
Neil: Victor?
Victor: Hi, neil.
Neil: I am so sorry. How long had cassie been in the water?
Victor: There's no way of knowing.
Neil: What's her prognosis?
Victor: Pretty grim. She's in a coma.
Neil: You have my deepest sympathies.
Victor: Thank you.
Neil: If there's anything I can do, anything at all...
Victor: Yeah. Neil, I need you to take over for me at the office, all right? I want you to conduct the meeting with the canadians.
Neil: Absolutely. Consider it done.
Victor: If you need
to reach me...
Neil: I will call you on your cell phone. Oh, boy. New year hasn't been good to you, has it?
Victor: I'm afraid a lot of it is my own fault, you know? Can't seem to do a damn thing right where my family is concerned. And now this. My granddaughter, the sweetest little girl in the world, lying in a hospital bed fighting for her life. How the hell did all this happen? (Knock on door)
Ashley: Come in, dru. I've been expecting you.
Dru: Where's jack?
Ashley: He won't be joining us.
Dru: But I thought I had a meeting--
Ashley: Well,
don't be so intimidated.
I won't bite you.
Dru: Oh, nobody's intimidated by you. I'm surprised. I assumed I was having a meeting with both of you
Ashley: Oh, well, I'm so sorry I didn't make that clear when I called.
Dru: Apology accepted.
Ashley: It's not that kind of a meeting, anyway.
Dru: What do you mean?
Ashley: Did jack tell you anything about what's on his mind?
Dru: He said that he migh have some work for me at jabot.
Ashley: Yeah,
we're thinking about moving
into a different product area--
an african-american
cosmetics line.
We're looking at a company
right now that we're very close
to acquiring, and your name
came up as a possibili to work
into our advertising campaign.
Dru: Sounds interesting.
Ashley: Yeah, I'm sure if an offer happened to come your way, you'd be quite interested, but before we go that far, I need to lay some ground rules.
Dru: Ground rules?
Ashley: Uh-huh. Before I can fully endorse you in a prominent position as
jabot model, I need to know that I can trust you.
Frederick: You're being awfully serious about a little goofing off.
Jill: If you don't come with me, I'm gonna take it very seriously.
Frederick: And you want to go where?
Jill: Oh, I don't know. To the mall, to the movies, to a motel, to a skating... oh, my god. I said motel, didn't I? Jill, you are such a damn fool!
Larry: All right, ma'am, move away from the window and slowly. Keep your hands where I can see 'em.
Jill: Larry, let's not take this cop thing too far, all right?
Larry: Well,
you put a uniform on a guy,
and it goes right to his head,
I guess, huh?
Larry: Hey, what's going on? You look like you're upset about something.
Jill: Yes.
Larry: Well, why? I thought last night was supposed to mellow you out.
Jill: You are so sweet, and the private dining room! I'm very impressed.
Larry: You mean, with that big ol' round king-sized bed? Yeah, that was cool, huh? And the chocolate and the crab claws and the strawberries and the champagne, that was very cool. (Chuckles)
Jill: Must have cost you a fortune.
Larry: So what? You know what? It was worth every nickel of it. Now tell me what's on your mind?
Jill: Myself,
which is nothing unusual, is it?
Except that I don't have
a self anymore.
Neil: It almost sounds like you're blaming yourself for what happened to cassie. But it was a freak accident, wasn't it? I mean, it's no one's fault.
Victor: No. There's so much about this you don't know, neil. Neil: What do you mean?
Victor: I guess I feel I... I started a chain reaction that led to this.
Neil: Victor, none of us have the benefit of hindsight. You couldn't have prevented what happened to cassie. I mean, I'll admit, you're a powerful man, but you're not that powerful. None of us are.
Victor: Ain't that the truth?
Neil: Yeah. Just know that cassie's in my prayers.
Victor: Thank you, neil.
I'm afraid that in this case
even your prayers won't be
enough to save that little girl.
Nick: Mom, knock it off. Okay? I don't need you trashing sharon right now.
Nikki: Nicholas, I'm not.
Nick: I'm serious. Sharon is cassie's mother. I want her here.
Nikki: You really think she could change anything?
Nick: Who knows, you know? She could make a difference. Right now that's all that matters.
Nick: So you okay?
Nikki: Compared to what?
Nick: You got some pretty heavy stuff laid on you last night.
Nikki: Look, I can't even think about sharon and victor right now, okay?
Nick: I'm really sorry. I thought you should know. I felt like you needed to know the truth.
Nikki: I know.
It makes me sick
to think about it,
but knowing sharon,
what a little tramp she is,
I guess...
Nick: Stop it!
Nick: Look,t t kes s two. And I blame dad a whole hell of a lot more than I blame sharon. If he hadn't have made that first move, that kiss never would have happened.
Nikki: You don't know that.
Nick: I saw what I saw, and dad admitted it, and that is good enough for me.
Nikki: God. You know, it makes me wonder, after all these years, I don't think I ever really knew your father at all. Since we remarried, all the things that I have learned, the secrets-- things that nobody knows about victor newman, things that he doesn't know.
Nick: Mom, I don't know what you're talking about.
Nikki: I know.
I know.
Dru: Ashley, if I were to represent your company, I would have--
Ashley: Trust encompasses more than just the workplace, drucilla. It also covers one's personal life.
Dru: I understand that.
Ashley: Do you? Do you really get what I'm saying?
Dru: I've got a brain, and I think I can figure it out.
Ashley: Yeah? Well, I'm still gonna be blunt. You've not always been somebody I can depend on, and before I even think about hiring you, I need to know that's changed.
Dru: Oh, you mean, like if I went to blab about victor newman being the father of your little--
Ashley: Could you just stop?
Right there is an example.
I don't even want you
to say it out loud.
Dru: Okay, okay. But didn't I promise you already? Didn't I tell you that I wouldn't breathe--
Ashley: You know what, drucilla? You're not somebody who's known for keeping her promises.
Dru: Okay, I'm gonna be blunt with you. In order for me to get this gig, I gotta keep my trap shut.
Ashley: Well, you said that you'd learned your lesson. That poking your nose in other people's business has cost you more trouble than it's worth.
Dru: If I haven't learned that, I have missed the boat.
Ashley: Well, I'd li t tbelilieve that.
Dru: And you can, I swear.
Ashley: Well, for the record, jack seems to think you'd be a big asset to the company.
Dru: And you don't?
Ashley: I'm reserving judgment.
Dru: Because you believe I can't cut it, is that it?
Ashley: That's not the point. I need you to know what's at stake here. I'm not putting up th anyny of your games.
Dru: Ashley, if you give me this opportunity, I will not disappoint you.
Ashley: Well, it comes down to one word, doesn't it?
Dru: Trust.
Ashley: If I go along with jack and hire you, don't make me regret it.
Diane: I'm sorry.
Andy: Don't be. Come on. You're entitled.
Diane: It's just--
it's just so hard.
I mean, I feel like
I have this huge hole
in my heart.
I mean, I've been with kyle
since the day he was born.
You know, he's my life.
I had no idea
I could miss anybody so much.
Andy: Diane, I know it's rough, and these first days, they're the worst, but it's gonna get better.
Diane: It'll never get better, an.. my baby is gone. And how am I supposed to go on?
Andy: You can start by pulling yourself together. Get yourself out of here. Come on, you can't shut the world out.
Diane: I just want to curl up and die.
Andy: Diane, no. You have to go on with your life. Come on, what about work?
Diane: I can't think about that right now.
Andy: Sure you can. It'd be good. It'll get your mind off this stuff.
>>Ianene: It's too soon.
Andy: You can do this, okay? You're an incredibly strong, proud woman, and you need to draw on that strength. And yoneed t to pick yourself up and get yourself back in the race here.
Diane: You really think I can?
Andy: Yes, I really think you can. If you give up, you're just giving jack and phyllis another victory. You want to do that?
Diane: No. No, I don't want to...
Andy: What do you want to do?
Phyllis: I want revenge.
That's what I want, andy.
I want revenge.
Jack and phyllis have taken
my son away from me,
and god help me,
I want to make them pay.
Jack: Honey, this is new surroundings. It's change. We knew this wasn't gonna be easy.
Phyllis: Kyle has been with diane all his life, and now everything has been snatched away from him.
Jack: Yes, and I still believe in the end, this is better for kyle.
Phyllis: I don't doubt that. I know that.
Jack: Honey, this is what we wanted. This is what we've worked for. Not just for us, for kyle.
Phyllis: I know, I know, and I think that you'll be... I mean, you already are a wonderful father.
Jack: Just as you will be a wonderful mother.
Phyllis: Jack,
as time goes on, I just--
I'm beginning to worry.
Jack: About what?
Phyllis: Despite my good intentions, I'm never gonna be a mother to kyle.
Jack: Wait, wait. Now you're talking crazy.
Phyllis: Am I?
Phyllis: Because my only experience as a mother has been a total failure. So wasas called cattle point. Of the nation, and subsequentlyne of th here. Your cruise director, ron
john: You know that liz foster's in town?
Kay: Indeed, I do, and th dear woman has given jill a new and improved reason for feeling sorry for herself and making everyone miseraee in the process.
John: You obviously know,
then.
Kay: About the adoption. Yes, I do.
John: Quite a shock to the system.
Kay: I suppose.
John: You don't sympathize?
Kay: Well, were it anyone else, yes, of course, I probably would, but, uh, since it's jill and the way she carries on about this...
John: Come on, katherine. You know, the woman can be forgiven.
Kay: Fine. You forgive her. But before you do, have you listened to the way she carries on?
John: A bit. The impression I get is that it's making her think about the past differently.
Kay: Oh, indeed it is, john.
I mean, she is going down
the list of every selfish,
greedy, thoughtless thing
she has ever done in her life
and checking them off.
Oh, really, it's like,
"oops. I'm so sorry I did that.
I'm adopted.
I certainly couldn't help
doing that. Mnh-mnh-mnh.
I was adopted."
John: Katherine...
Kay: "Can't blame myself for doing that, 'cause by god, I'm adopted!" Oh, come on, john, please.
Larry: Are you still all hung up about being adopted?
Jill: You know what? Let's just let this drop I realize you think it's no big deal.
Larry: Yeah, because it isn'T.
Jill: Maybe not to you, larry.
Larry: Okay, look, it's not that it's no big deal, all right? And, yeah, maybe I can see how it changes a few things.
Jill: It does a lot.
Larry: Yeah,
if you were 12 years old.
The bottom line is
it's old news.
I mean, how often do you get
together with your mother,
anyway?
Jill: I'm not talking about now, okay? It's not like I want a new family. I am just trying to find out why I am the way I am.
Larry: And what good is that gonna do? It's not gonna make you any different.
Jill: No, but it might help explain a lot of things.
Larry: What are you
looking for, an excuse?
Huh? Or a cop-out?
Someone or something to blame?
Jill, you don't need that.
You just gotta let yourself
f f the hook.
You're a great lady.
A little wacko at times,
but so what? Okay? So am I.
The bottom line is
don't change.
And stop worrying
about everything so much.
Jill: I still wanna know who my parents were, larry.
Larry: Careful what you wish for.
Jill: I know, I know.
Larry: Look, listen. Listen to me. Hear what I'm saying. You got a lot of stuff going on, and it's good, and if I were you, I would say, "thank you, lord" and move right along. Now I gotta get back to my duties. I gotta go down and protect jabot from all these criminal elements. See you back at the shack?
Jill: Yeah.
Nick: All this talk about secrets--what secrets?
Nikki: I guess it's not fair
to blame him for something
he doesn't even know about,
but I can't help it.
And ever since I found out
about this thing with sharon,
I am questioning every word
he has ever said to me--
every feeling he has ever
professed to have for me.
Nick: The guy's a jerk. All he cares about is himself...
Nikki: Chcholas.
Nick: Why do you even question it? What?
Nikki: It just really hurts me to hear you talk about your father like that.
Nick: Didn't you just basically say the same thing?
Nikki: I guess so. You know what? If I did tell him what I know-- the secret--it would be over. It would be over forever.
Nick: Mom, what are you clinging to? After finding out what happened between him and sharon, what makes you think you even have a marriage anymore?
Nikki: It's very complicated. You don't understand.
Nick: What is so complicated
about it?
My father is
an unprincipled creep.
Nikki: We have a history together.
Nick: Then bury it. For my money, it's best if you just cut your losses and run. Tell him whatever it is you know, get it off your chest and finish it, and if that is the end ofou and my father, I say good riddance.
Ashley: Victor.
Victor: How'd you...
Ashley: I had to come. Yes, I heard some talk in the jabot commissary about cassie. Then the hospital confirmed it when I called. I hope I'm not intruding.
Victor: Not at all. I'm glad to see you.
Ashley: What happened?
What happened?
Was there some kind
of accident?
Victor: Apparently, cassie walked out on the ice on our pond at the ranch and fell through.
Ashley: Oh, my god.
Victor: We don't know how long she was in the water. Now she's in there, and she's still unconscious.
Ashley: Why are you all by yourself? Where's the rest of your family?
Freririck: Still feel like ice skating?
Jill: (Gasps)
Frederick: Grab your skates.
Jill: Oh. Frederick, you startled me.
Frederick: I was just talking to you.
Jill: Yeah, I know, I know. I just--I wasn't-- I was lost in thought.
Frederick: Well, so do you still feel like playing hooky?
Jill: Please don't torture me about that.
Frederick: I'm not.
Jill: Yes, you are. I made a complete ass of myself, and you're rubbing my nose in it.
Frederick: Oh, jill. Come on. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Jill: Ugh. I'm sure
after anita calmed down,
both of you had a good laugh
at my expense.
Frederick: No, we didn'T.
Jill: But anita did calm down, right?
Frederick: Not yet, that I'm aware of.
Jill: Why did she have to pop up right at that moment? The timing was so awful.
Frederick: Yeah, she didn't just pop up out of nowhere. We were there at the lodge together. She was upstairs, and she booked us a room.
Jill: Oh.
Oh.
Kay: I'm sorry, john. I... I knowouou have a soft spot in your heart for jill.
John: Well, she's going through something that's not of her own making.
Kay: For a change.
John: And I think she's handling it quite well.
Kay: Really?
Well, I wanna tell you
something.
She is making poor liz foster,
who is near death's door,
feel terrible, just terrible.
She wants everyone to
fall down weeping,
tear out their hair,
because, why, she is adopted.
John: Katherine, please, let's not do this.
Kay: I'm just getting started.
John: Don't, don'T. Please. You know, on second thought, I think I would love a cup of tea.
Kay: Are you sure?
John: Hmm. Low blood-pressure tea, if you have it.
Both: (Chuckle)
Kay: It really is good to see you again, john.
John: You too.
Kay: All right. Hot water. Tea. Hot water and tea. Esther! Hot water for tea! Esther!
Nick: She looks so peaceful. It's hard to believe that she may not--
Nikki: Don't say that.
Don't say that.
She's gonna pull through.
We just have to have faith.
Nick: I just wish sharon knew. I wish she could be here.
Nikki: Look, right now I'm worried about you.
Nick: I'm fine.
Nikki: No, you're very tired. You have to conserve your strength. Please, just go home and take a rest, even if it's just for a little while.
Nick: Okay. But if there's any change...
Nikki: I'll call you. Go on.
Nikki: I'll be right here.
Nick: Okay.
Nikki: Sweet angel.
Ashley: Thanks.
Victor: To say that I have made a mess of things would be an understatement.
Ashley: You have?
Victor: Yeah.
I never meant to interfere
you know?
I just wanted to help.
Ashley: I don't-- I don't understand.
Victor: (Exhales deeply) my family is self-destructing. Things have happened.
Ashley: What?
Victor: Nothing will ever be the same.
Ashley: Well, tell me. What things are you talking about?
Victor: You know that there have been problems in my son's marriage?
Ashley: Well, you just told me she's gone, so...
Victor: Her daughter's fighting for her life, but the mother isn't here, doesn't even knoabout it. Anand my son holds me responsible.
Ashley: Why does he blame you?
Victor: He has his reasons.
Ashley: Well, can't you
convince him that he's wrong?
Victor: Yeah, I could. But at what cost?
Jill: Oh, my god. Now I really am mortified.
Frederick: No, don't be.
Jill: No. There I was, shamelessly chatting you up, and your wife was waiting upstairs for you?
Frederick: Yes.
Jill: And I assume not to play cards.
Frederick: Well, who knows? We might have wound up playing cards. Truth? We were there at the lodge, trying to put something back in our marriage that's been missing.
Jill: Okay, I probably don't need to be hearing this.
Frederick: Fine, but just know I'm flattered that youwanted to play hooky with me. One day we should do it.
Jill: You're very kind.
Frederick: No, I'm sincere.
I think it'd be fun.
Jill: Thank you. Would you please tell anita that I...
Frederick: That you meant her no harm? Look, I told her. You told her. She chooses not to believe us, so I think I'm just gonna leave it like that.
Jill: Well, you can't leave it like that if you're trying to put that rtain n something back in your marriage.
Frederick: Let me worry about that, jill. You know what I wanna know? I wanna know what's going on with you-- all that talk the other day about life being short and making the most of your time.
Jill: I had just had a rather nastyhock.
Frederick: I know. I'm sorry.
You said your mother has
a brain tumor.
Jill: My mother.
Frederick: What, jill? Is there more?
Jill: Uh, it's very personal.
Frederick: I'm sorry. Forget I asked.
Jill: I grew up right here in genoa cit f frederick. My father left us when I was very little, and we were poor. We worked extremely hard, though, and things turned out. Life was good. And my brothers are professional men. Snapper's a doctor. Greg's a lawyer.
Frederick: And you've done very well for yourself.
Jill: And that is thanks
to my mother.
She was with us every inch
of the way.
We were very, very close--
mama and greg and snapper
and me.
Very close.
And then when my mother
came into town the other day...
Frederick: And told you she was seriously ill. Yeah, that must have hit you very hard.
Jill: Yeah, it did.
Frederick: Is there more? I mean, you don't have to tell me.
Jill: She told me I was adopted.
Frederick: Really? You didn't know?
Jill: No, it was the first I ever heard of it.
Frederick: Wow, and your brothers?
Jill: No, not my brothers. Just me. Now you tell me if I'm crazy, but isn't it a little late in the game to be telling your daughter that she is not your own flesh and blood?
Andy: Come on, diane.
It is no time to be talking
like that.
Diane: Why not?
Andy: What's done is done, okay, and you just have to let go of it.
Diane: Do I? Jack and phyllis have underestimated me, and so far, they've gotten away with it, but if I play my cards right, it is not too late.
Andy: Diane, stop it, okay? Just stop, okay? Stop, please. All right? Do not even think about going down that road, please.
Diane: This is my life we're talking about.
Andy: Sure, and look what
that kind of thinking
has gotten you so far.
You let your anger
and your hatred turn
this beautiful, sensitive woman
into someone I don't even
recognize.
And... it's a woman I...
I just don't wanna know.
Just please, let this anger
and let this hatred--
just let it go.
Diane: Sometimes anger can be a source of strength.
Andy: I think there are better sources--more positive.
Diane: Such as?
Andy: Look, just go call jack and arrange a visit with your son.
Jack: Phyllis, listen to me. You're a different person now.
Phyllis: I don't think so.
Jack: The courts would never have allowed us to take kyle with us if they didn't believe the same thing.
Phyllis: Maybe I'm the lesser of two evils. I can't take the place of being kyle's mother, jack. I can't do that.
Jack: What is happening right now has nothing to do with what kind of mother you are.
Phyllis: God,
I can't believe this.
I can't believe all of this
is making me feel
so inadequate as a person.
Jack: Because it's all new to you, just as it's new to kyle.
Jack: Look, maybe we need some help here.
Phyllis: What? What are you talking about? Like some child shrink?
Jack: No, no, no.
Phyllis: Something?
Jack: I think he's too young for that. No, I'm talking about the one person that can help us-- diane.
Frederick: I really don't have an opinion, jill. I don't know you or your mother or the circumstances well enough.
Jill: You know, some people
are telling me that I should
just shrug it off and let it go.
You know, like, hey,
I was adopted.
Some people had me.
They didn't want me.
They gave me up,
and then I had this life,
so just accept it, jill.
Don't try to rewrite it.
Frederick: Oh, you can'trewrite history, no. But I can understand if you have a few questions.
Jill: You can? Well, thank you. Thank you so much. Somebody can understand.
Frederick: Well, sure. Many people who've been adopted ultimately wanna find out who their birth parents are. It's only natural. Who told you to forget it, anyway? I mean, I don't think that's good advice. It seems insensitive to me.
Jill: Yeah, well, they meant well.
Frederick: Yeah, but these
are your own feelings.
These feelings are yours,
and you have a right
to experience them
any way that you want.
I'll tell you what.
If you decide that you want
to find your birth parents,
I'll do anything I can
to help you.
Jill: Oh, my god. You would do that?
Frederick: Sure. Hey, I'm a banker. Bureaucratic paperwork's my specialty.
Victor: There's something I've kept to myself, and if my son knew about it, he might change his attitude towards me. But I'm reluctant.
Ashley: Well, why are you holding back? He means the world to you. I mean, if there's a problem in your relationship, just talk to him about it.
Victor: It's a question of priorities, that's all.
Ashley: What do you mean, victor? What do you mean, priorities?
Victor: I know that nicholas
and sharon love each other.
I know that.
And I'm desperately trying
to save their marriage.
But if I told him
what really happened,
it would make reconciliation
between the two
practically impossible.
So do you see the bind I'm in?
Ashley: Well, I certainly understand the words. I don't really know what they mean.
Victor: I know. There's a child in there fighting for her life. If we find her mother, when we find her mother, I don't want any obstacles keeping her from her husband, nor from her child. So it's best that I say nothing.
Ashley: You just be very careful with secrets. If it's one thing I've learned, is they can destroy lives. Be careful.
