As for you, nicholas,
you are, you always will be
the love of my life.
The tragedy is that I have
ruined everything.
Please, god, may you someday
find it in your heart
to forgive me.
All my love--sharon. (Crash)
Victoria: Bad news?
Nick: This is from sharon. Delivered by messenger. She left.
Victoria: She left?
Nick: Yeah, as in, she's gone. I don't know where, for how long.
Victoria: Oh, my god, nicholas, what are you gonna do?
Nick: I don't know. You know what this is about? This is about dad. If he just stayed out of our lives, I'd be back with sharon right now. But that's not gonna happen now, and it's all his fault.
Victoria: Well, it's not totally his fault.
Nick: Don't you start
defending him!Do you have any idea what
I'm going through right now?
I mean, forget about me
for one second.
I have two kids who don't have
a mom.
How am I supposed
to explain that to them?
How do I make them understand
that?
Victoria: You're a wonderful father. You'll find a way.
Nick: I am not their mother. They need her, and now she's gone! And it's all because of my dad. He couldn't keep h dn has off my wife. I'd better not see him right now.
Victoria: Look, just calm wnwn. I'm not dad's biggest fan, but this family doesn't need another tragedy.
Nick: Well, then you keep him the hell away from me, 'cause I don't know what'll happen if I see him.
Sharon: I still can't believe that you would do this-- taking all the responsibility on your shoulders for what nicholas saw.
Victor: I did this because
it was the only way
that'll salvage your marriage.
He has to believe that I was
the aggressor.
Sharon: You did this, no matter what the cost to you, no matter what the cost to your relationship with your son. You know, he may never forgive you. (Door opens)
Neil: Hey, vicki! Vicki, I-- victor, great. You're just the man I was looking for. Listen, I want to talk to you about that gainsley acquisition. The terms aren't exactly satisfactory yet. I'd like to sit down with you and nicholas and kind of hammer out the bottom line. What do you say?
Victor: It's all right, neil.
Just, um...
let nicholas handle it.
Just leave me out of it
for the time being.
Isabella: What doou mean you talked about me? You said you were there on my behalf? Oh, that's brilliant, michael. That's the kind of conneioion we're trying to avoid.
Michael: What connection, isabella? I had to reveal that I knew she'd been coming around you, asking questions, misrepresenting herself as a parole officer.
Isabella: And what did she say about that?
Michael: She said that she never specifically claimed to be a government employee, but she as much as admitted that she is working for someone.
Isabella: Someone? Great. We knew that.
Michael: We suspected that.
Isabella: So that's all?
Michael: She is working for a woman.
Isabella: She said that.
Michael: I conjectured, but she didn't deny it.
Isabella: Well, great. But since you didn't see fit to mention mary or lynne, we still don't have a name, which leaves a few million women that may be trying to snoop into my past.
Michael: I doubt that very much.
Isabella: Michael, would you just get sioious for a minute, okay? You have as much to lose from this as I do. And if I haven't made myself clear, let me do it right now. If I lose, you lose, too. And I'll make sure of that.
Lynne: You know, if you
ask me, boss, I'd say you're
being way too hard on yourself.
Paul: Well, thanks, but believe me, I am not the nice guy in this piece.
Lynne: Okay, well, you know I'm biased, because I'll be on your side no matter what.
Paul: Thank you.
Lynne: Mind if I ask what's got isabella so upset?
Paul: Yes, I do mind.
Lynne: Okay. I can guess anyway.
Paul: Oh, you think so, huh?
Lynne: Yeah. You probably just mentioned christine's name, or maybe a picture of her turned up somewhere or something with her name on it, like a book or a postcard. You might have evesasaid it in your sleep.
Paul: Oh, lynne, please.
Lynne: Because that's what's on isabella's mind, isn't it? The fact that the ghost of christine is still hanging around, and it makes her insecure. It makes her difficult.
Paul: You know what? You're really not giving isabella any credit.
Lynne: No, I'm not. I see no reason to.
Paul: Well... let me open your eyes. Are you ready for some news? Chris and I had sex the night of ricky's christening. See what a nice guy I am? And the kicker, isabella knows about it, so before you write her off as being unreasonable, why don't you try and put yourself in her shoes?
Lynne: Did chris tell her?
Paul: No, I told her.
I felt she had a right
to know why I've been so out
of it.
So now do you blame her
for leaving?
Lynne: No, I guess not. You and chris, you did what you did, was that it?
Paul: No, no, no, it wasn'T. Not by a long shot.
Jill: Just some coffee when you get a minute, please.
Man: Sure.
Liz: Why shouldn't I tell katherine? She's an old friend.
Jill: Of yours maybe. I have to live with the woman.
Liz: Oh, no, you don'T. You decided to.
Jill: Mom--
Liz: For some unknown reason.
Jill: I don't wanna get into that right now. But, please, from now on, could you let me decide who knows and who doesn't know about this little bomb you dropped on me?
Liz: You were adopted.
So what?
As a tiny infant,
you were brought into a family
that wanted you, loved you,
treated you just exactly li y you'd been born into it.
Jill: You don't understand.
Liz: I do understand that you can make a big deal out of this if you want to, but I don'T.
Jill: Mama, I was painting other people's fingernails, while my brothers were out becoming professional men.
Liz: Yes, but that had nothing to do with whether or not you were adopted.
Jill: Didn't it? Are you sure of that? I mean, after dad left, wasn't it just a little bit easier to let me go out and get a job and forget about college?
Frederick: How could I have forgotten? We've been married close to 20 years.
Anita: Well, maybe so,
but when was the last time
you made love to me?
Frederick: Anita.
Anita: No one's listening. When was it? Can you remember?
Frederick: These days, my dear, either party's allowed to make the first move.
Anita: You always used to make the first move and the second and the third and the fourth.
Frederick: Yeah, guess I was pretty insatiable, wasn't I?
Anita: Yeah. Which I flattered myself by thinking it had something to do with me.
Frederick: Of course it did. There were never any girls that could turn me on like you did.
Anita: What about now, frederick? What turns you on now?
Frederick: What did they put
in your orange juice
this morning?
Michael: You know, isabella, I'm getting a little bored with the same old tired threat you keep waving under my nose.
Isabella: Stop acting like you need to be reminded. A couple years ago when I blew into town and owed you a favor, you asked me to come between paul and christine.
Michael: Yes, you did a great job.
Isabella: Darn right I did. Paul is married to me and the pretty little blonde lawyer's wearing your ring.
Michael: Don't kid yourself. I'm sure she threw that ring through a sewer grate a long time ago.
Isabella: Women don't throw away diamonds unless they're really, really mad.
Michael: Well, she was pretty damn mad.
Isabella: Not terminally,
but if she were to learn
that you had a hand in
breaking up her greatest love,
yeah, your name would be mud.
Permanently.
Michael: I don't think so. You see, the facts are, christine and paul's marriage was on the rocks already. And when you showed up, you simply delivered the coup de grce.
Isabella: Well, if you're so sure christine will see it that way, why don't you tell her yourself, michael? "Honey, I sicced isabella on your husband, but I was doing you a favor. It wasn't so I could put the moves on you. Oh, heavens, no. It was for your own good." Good ahead. Tell her. I'll send you flowers when you're in the hospital.
Neil: Victor, I don't see
how we can leave you out
of this meeting. It's critical.
It's an extremely
important meeting.
Victor: I don't care how important it is, neil. I'm sure with your help, my sonanan handle it.
Neil: How about this? Why don't I just schedule the meeting at your convenience?
Victor: You're not hearing. You're not hearing me. I don't want you to involve me and my son in the same project. Ain't gonna work.
Neil: Sorry to hear that.
Victor: Not nearly as sorry as I am.
Neil: Is there anything I can do to help?
Victor: Very kind of you to offer, but no, thank you.
Neil: I did run into nikki not too long ago, and we talked.
Victor: Oh, yeah? I'm sure you're aware of what a disaster my personal life has become.
Neil: I know that your family
has been going through
a very difficult time lately.
Victor: That'sputting it mildly.
Neil: Victor, may I say, I have never seen a stronger family than yours. You all stick together ultimately. You know that.
Victor: I'm not so sure about that, neil. I'm not so sure about that at all anymore.
Victoria: How are we ever going to put our family back together again?
Nick: I wouldn't worry about that right n, sis, if I was you, because it's not gonna happen. (Telephone rings)
Nick: Nick newman.
Miguel: Nicholas, it's miguel.
Nick: Hey, miguel. What's up?
Miguel: Sorry to bother you,
but the school nurse called.
Cassie wasn't feeling well,
so I brought her home.
Nick: What's wrong with her?
Miguel: I'm not sure, but she's asking a lot of questions about her mother, and I don't know what to tell her.
Nick: Um... all right, don't worry about it. I'm heading home. Thanks.
Victoria: What's wrong?
Nick: It's cassie. She, uh... she wasn't feeling well, so miguel had to pick her up from school. Now it all begins.
Victoria: Anything I can do?
Nick: There isn't anything anybody can do. I mean, I gotta go home and blow my little girl's world apart... again. I still say it's all because of dad.
Liz: I can't believe the anger I'm hearing in your voice.
Jill: It's not directed at you, mama.
Liz: It sure sounds that way.
Jill: No. I'm glad that you adopted me.
Liz: Do you mean that?
Jill: Well, I'm sure I'm better off than if I'd stayed with my real parents. It's just...
Liz: You think you were treated like cinderella, doing all the work while everyone else had fun?
Jill: No, I don't think that. After dad left, I remember how hard you worked.
Liz: Well, I sure did.
The boys, too.
Medical school, law school,
both of them on tight budgets.
None of us had it easy.
Jill: It's just that I've always felt different.
Liz: Do you know what they call this? Rewriting history.
Jill: Oh, my god. My history is not in my imagination.
Liz: Yes, but you never talked about feeling different until you learned about having been adopted.
Jill: But I always felt it. I mean, it was something I could never quite put my finger on, but I just-- not until I found out...
Liz: What, that you were different? But you weren't! Oh, honey, you were you. You still are.
Jill: You really can't understand why this would make a person want to re-examine her life, can you?
Liz: The past
is dead and gone.
I see no point.
Jill: Well, maybe you don't, but I have made mistakes, mama. So many mistakes.
Liz: Because you were adopted?
Jill: Maybe. I mean, who knows? Can you tell me why I have always been so self-destructive?
Liz: Everybody makes mistakes, girl.
Jill: Not as many as I have.
Liz: Says who?
Jill: See, you just act like you have all the answers.
Liz: Well, maybe not, but I know that you can't use being adopted as an excuse for what you don't like about yourself.
Jill: Can you tell me for sure that you neve treated me differently?
Liz: Oh, yes.
From the first moment
I took you in my arms,
you were my little girl,
my sweet jill.
No one else'S.
Jill: Mama, I know you love me. It's just that I've always felt this empty place.
Liz: Your father leaving had something to do with that.
Jill: I suppose so. God knows I've never had much luck with men.
Liz: Oh, good heavens, girl. Well, if you inherited that from anyone, you got it from me.
Jill: I wish I'd inherited more from you.
Liz: Don't be too sure of that.
Jill: No, you have always known exactly who you were.
Liz: So have you.
Jill: Well, what I do know about myself, I don't like much. I never have.
Liz: What you didn't like
was being poor. It drove you.
Look what you've accomplished.
Jill: Yeah, but I haven't been poor in a very long time, and I still don't like myself. And I want to know why.
Liz: Oh, fiddle-faddle. Stop taking yourself so seriously. Live your life while you still have it. It will be gone soon enough. Speaking of which, it is a nice, crisp morning, and I'm gonna take a walk in the park. Will you join me?
Jill: A walk? No, no, not right now.
Liz: Well, I know you're busy. You have to get back to work.
Jill: Mama, will you be staying at kath-- with us at my house?
Liz: No, no. I...
oh, to be honest, I just
can't stand the negativity
between you and katherine.
I won't be around
that much longer, and...
Jill: Mama!
Liz: Oh, no! I didn't mean that. I meant around town.
Jill: No, I'll get it. Mama, I want you to check in with me one way or another. Okay? I want to know exactly when the operation's happening so I can pray for you, okay?
Liz: I will. In the meantime, don't be so hard on yourself, daughter. One of these days you will look the grim reaper in the face, and you will remember all the time you wasted trying to analyze everything. And you will want it back.
Anita: Nobody put anything
in my orange juice.
I was just remembering
when you used to sneak home
in the middle of the afternoon
and surprise me.
Frederick: Yeah, I remember, too.
Anita: Why'd you stop?
Frederick: I don't know. I guess maybe we had a squabble or something and... something broke the habit.
Anita: Some habits you shouldn't break.
Frederick: Yeah. Well, it's definitely a situation we need to do something about. Definitely.
Anita: I'm not ready to be put on the shelf, frederick.
Frederick: No, anita, you certainly are not, and I promise you that we will work on this. Just now's not really a good time.
Anita: Don't tell me you have a meeting?
Frederick: No,
actually I don't,
but stuff's piling up like--
Anita: So let your assistant handle it.
Frederick: You want to go home?
Anita: They have lovely rooms here.
Frederick: Right. I don't have all day.
Anita: Well, I promise I will have you safely behind your desk before the interest rates skyrocket.
Frederick: All right. You've got yourself a deal.
Anita: Good. Why don't I go arrange for a room? And you can pay the bill. And, um... give me... just a minute to freshen up.
Nick: Hey, miguel. Fill me in.
Miguel: I know what happened, nicholas, that sharon left.
Nick: Did you talk to her?
Miguel: No. I saw her get in a taxi. She had a suitcase. I didn't know how to explain this to cassie. That's why I phoned.
Nick: I don't know either. How do you explain this to a child?
Miguel: Nicholas, I'm very sorry that this happened.
Nick: Yeah, me, too. I mean, these kids, I don'T... hey, squirt. So, uh, what's up? I hear you're not feeling too well.
Cassie: I don't know. Headache, stomachache. I feel awful.
Nick: All right. Hey, I'll take it from here. Thanks, buddy.
Miguel: Sure.
Nick: Come here.
Let me feel your forehead.
Cassie: Dad, it's not hot. I'nonot really sick.
Nick: Okay, then what's going on?
Cassie: You tell me. What's going on with mom?
Lynne: I can't believe this.
Paul: Why not?
Lynne: Well, chris never...
Paul: What? Said anything to you about it? When would she have had a chance to do that? She left town right after it happened.
Lynne: Yes, she did. Of course. I'm sorry. I'm just in shock.
Paul: Why the hell would you be in shock? You waways said that you thought that chris and i aren't over each other.
Lynne: So that's what this was about? Two people still in love?
Paul: I don't know.
I really don't know
what it was about.
All I know is that
it wasn't right.
It never should have happened.
Lynne: Paul, how can you say that? If ever there were proof that you and chris--
Paul: No, it's not about true love. Take my word for it. What happened was ugly and hurtful.
Lynne: Stop it. Just don't say things like that, okay? What you and chris have is--
Paul: Look, we don't have anything. We've got nothing. We've got worse than nothing. I just hope that if ever she comes back into town again, I'll have the opportunity to see her again and tell her...
Michael: Williams! Williams, are you... lynne, would you excuse us? Paul and I need to talk.
Nick: Boy, you really cut right through, don't you?
Cassie: I've been worried
about mom ever since miguel
took us to school this morning.
Nick: Why?
Cassie: She was acting weird. The way she hugged us-- it was like she was clinging on to us or something. That's why I had to come home. I had to check on her. I'm sorry I lied.
Nick: I was afraid it was this.
Cassie: Where is she? I mean, miguel said she's not home. Can't we call her?
Nick: No, we can'T.
Cassie: Why not?
Nick: Because I don't know where she is.
Cassie: You don't know?
Nick: No, she left this morning.
Cassie: Left to go where?
Nick: I don't know,
sweetheart. I didn't even know
she was leaving.
She sent me a letter telling me
after she was already gone.
Cassie: A letter? Mom told you she was leaving in a letter? How could she do that?
Nick: I don't know. She didn't think she could handle telling us in person, especially not you kids.
Cassie: Is she ever coming back?
Nick: I'm sure she plans on coming back. I just don't know when, but I'm sure she does. She just needs some time alone right now.
Cassie: Doesn't she love us?
Nick: Yes. Yes, cassie. She loves you very much. She made that very clear in the letter. She just didn't think she could be a very good mom right now.
Cassie: Daddy, why is
this happening?
Can you tell me why?
Air was totally fried,
Frederick: Thank you.
Jill: Well, hello there.
Frederick: Jill. My, what a surprise.
Jill: Power breakfast?
Frederick: Well, no, not exactly.
Jill: You know, I was just thinking about you.
Frederick: You were?
Jill: Yeah, may I? Yes, I was just wondering when we were gonna see you again. I'll bet if we were la on that payment, that would bring you running.
Frederick: Yeah, well, it's probably better that we just run into each other like this.
Jill: Probably so. So you're looking well.
Frederick: Thank you.
So are you.
You seem particularly energetic
this morning.
Jill: Yes, well, someone whose opinion I value just reminded me that life is for living. Do you have any plans?
Frederick: You mean--
Jill: I mean now, today. Any lunches? Any meetings?
Frederick: Well, actually--
Jill: Let's take the y y off. Let's go to the movies. Or let's go to a record store and listen to some new music. Let's play hooky. Oh, come on, frederick! Let's go have some fun together. You only live once, right?
Paul: So what brings you busting in where you're not wanted?
Michael: Curiosity.
Paul: You should leav
Michael: Don't think so.
Paul: This is my office.
Michael: And christine
is my fiancéE.
If you want to talk
about trespassing,
let's talk about her.
Paul: What?
Michael: What? Don't be an ass. You know exactly what I'm talking about. It is incredible, isn't it? A man can't even make it home from his own son's baptism. Paul, you are a lecherous, adulterous, unprincipled pig. Yeah, go ahead. Go ahead, make your move. Just know that if it takes my dying breath, I will see to it that you never lay a hand on christine again.
Nick: Cassie, listen, I want to finish our conversation. Right now there's a few things I need to say to victor, so I want you to go up to the main house and wait for me there. I'll be up soon, okay?
Cassie: All right,
but don't forget.
Nick: Sweetie, I won'T. I won't, okay?
Cassie: Okay.
Cassie: Bye, victor.
Nick: I can't believe you have the gall to come down here and walk in my own house. What the hell's the matter with you?
Victor: Please hear me out, son.
Nick: No! It's taking everything in me not to come over there and hit you again.
