Jack: Well,
just dust off an old copy
and shoot it over here.
No, she will sign, john.
She will sign. Trust me.
Hey, you know what?
Don't even ask why.
Just take my word for it.
Diane has seen the light.
What? Okay. You too.
Have a lovely evening.
Phyllis: So john's drawing up a new custody agreement.
Jack: We will have it in our hot, little hands first thing in the morning.
Phyllis: Good. Good. Good. This calls for a celebration.
Jack: I think so, too.
Phyllis: Here you go.
Jack: Oh, boy.
Phyllis: Why don't you make a toast?
Jack: I would love to make a toast.
Phyllis: Hang on. Here we go.
Jack: To the future of our family, at long last.
Phyllis: Hear, hear.
Jack: I didn't know you two were out on the town.
Gina: Well, we weren'T. We were at the hospital. Your father had to go to the emergency room.
Andy: It has, um...
it's been real good
talking to you.
Christine: Right back at you.
Michael: Okay.
Miss kelly simmons.
Describe her.
What did she look like?
Isabella: Dark hair.
Brown eyes. Glasses.
Michael: What else?
Isabella: She was
professional, well-dressed,
attractive.
She had a southern accent. (Cell phone rings)
Andy: Oh, looks like they found me.
Christine: Well, you better get it. It might be important.
Andy: Andy richards.
Diane: Thank god you answered. I'm at the hotel, and I really need to see you, andy.
Andy: All right. Sit tight,
and I'll be right there,
all right?
Christine: What, duty calls?
Andy: Uh, yeah. Afraid so. Um, look, why don't you give me your number, and we'll continue this another day.
Christine: Oh, I'm sure we'll run into each other agn sometime. I like this place.
Andy: Okay. Kelly simmons, it has been terrific meeting you.
Christine: I'm glad that friend of yours brought you over here.
Andy: Yeah, paul. Yeah, he's that kind of guy. He's just a real friend.
Christine: It's nice to have friends like that.
Andy: Well...
Christine: Bye now.
Andy: I'll see you.
Christine: All right. (Thunder rumbling)
Christine: (Panting)
Isabella: Paul?
Paul: Isabella, I didn't realize you were here.
Isabella: Are you all right?
Paul: What are you doing on the floor? Aren't you feeling well?
Isabella: Not really.
Paul: What's going on?
Isabella: You seemed upset just now when you came in.
Paul: I'm-I'm worried about you. Is the baby asle??
Isabella: Ricky's not here. I haven't picked him up from the sitter.
Paul: Well, honey, it's late. It's like--
Isabella: It's okay. I called, and I told her I didn't know when I'd be there.
Paul: You're starting to scare me. You're not yourself.
Isabella: And you are?
Paul: What's going on?
Isabella: I don't know. I wish I did.
Paul: What are you talking about?
Isabella: Things have been different since the baptism. Everything has been different.
Paul: Yeah, I know.
Isabella: I know you were horrified when michael showed up and announced his engagement to christine.
Paul: I lost it. I don'T... I just lost it.
Isabella: But there's more. I know there's something more.
Policeman: I'll be back to talk to you in the morning, mr. Newman.
Victor: Thank you, officer.
Medic: Hope you feel better, mr. Newman.
Victor: Thank you, sir.
Thank you for helping.
Diego: I'll see you gentlemen out.
Larry: You're like me with doctors. You can't stand 'em.
Victor: (Laughs) you got that right. I owe you, larry.
Larry: Nah. You don't owe me a thing, mr. Newman. Anyway, you take care of that noggin, will you?
Victor: Thank you, man. Thank you for being here.
Larry: Thank you, sir. Have a good evening.
Victor: Thank you.
Johnny: Evening. What can I get you?
Victoria: Something strong.
Brad: Johnny... why don't you get the lady a chocolate martini?
Victoria: Yeah? Really?
Okay. Sure, why not?
Johnny: Coming rit t up.
Victoria: Chocolate martini, huh? How did you come up with that one?
Brad: Oh, I'm just a fun guy.
Victoria: Yeah. You seem like you're really laughing it up tonight.
Victoria: Well, this is a rousing conversation.
Brad: Did you come here to talk... or to drown your sorrows?
Brad: Last time we bumped into each other, you'd hit a rough patch with that guy you were seeing.
Victoria: Hmm. Hmm. Yeah. Yeah. And if I remember correctly, you told me to hang in there and hold on to love as hard as I could.
Brad: Yeah--
Victoria: Guess what, bradley?
I took your advice.
Brad: And?
Victoria: Now I'm wondering if it was just a big mistake. Thanks.
Andy: What's going on? You've been crying.
Diane: I'm not having a very good night.
Andy: Okay, I heard that
on the phone.
Now what's the matter?Talk to me.
Diane: I-I... I can'T.
Andy: What do you mean, you can't?
Diane: I just needed to see a friendly face. I just don't want to be alone right now.
Andy: You're not gonna tell me what happened?
Diane: Well, I'm not supposed to talk about it.
Andy: Says who?
Diane: God, andy, please!
Andy: Okay, okay, okay. Just calm down, okay? Nobody's forcing you here. When I walk in here, and I see you like this, I--
Diane: Jack and phyllis found something. And now they're holding it over my head.
Andy: What kind of something?
Evidence? Is...
is this about the fire?
Diane: It... it makes things look bad. Very bad.
Andy: In what way?
Diane: I played a joke on phyllis.
Andy: Oh, no.
Diane: It was a stupid prank. And now it's blown up in my face.
Andy: Diane... what kind of prank did you play?
Diane: I-it was a phone call. I... I arranged for her to be pulled away from the newman wedding, and... I-I knew she was having this bad day, and I just couldn't help myself, 'cause I hated the fact that she was there with jack. I-I admit it was petty jealousy, but-but the timing was awful, and-and-and now they have this piece of paper.
Andy: Did you start
that fire?
Diane: What? Andy, for god's sakes--
Andy: Damn it, just... just answer me. Did you start the fire?
Diane: What difference does it make, huh? Jack and phyllis have something that looks like proof, and that would be enough to convince the police. So I might as well have, right?
Die: Look, mr. Newman, I know this... it doesn't erase everything that's happened. Still, the fact that we accomplished this together... to me, that... that's a step in the right direction.
Victor: Mr. Guittierez, your plan was insane. We're very lucky it worked out the way it did.
Brad: I'm sorry that things
didn't work out, victoria.
Victoria: Easy come, easy go, right?
Brad: Mmm. Nothing easy about it.
Victoria: You're kind of a macho guy, aren't you, brad? Can I ask you a question? This whole manly pride stuff, I mean, does it trump everything? Does it always come first, no matter what anybody else thinks?
Brad: That's kind of a blanket statement.
Victoria: But it's true, right?
Brad: Depends on the situation.
Victoria: You guys hold the right to, uh, go off whenever you want, whenever the spirit moves you.
Brad: Sounding
a little bitter.
Victoria: Yeah. I guess I am a little bitter. I mean, I don't wanna be. I really don'T. It's just that, you know, I mean, you fall really hard for someone, and you're totally in sync, and things are great, and then out of the blue, this whole other side just pops out of nowhere. Maybe it was there all along. I just didn't see it. Are only as d as you feel.
Claire: Oh, yes, which makes me close to ú
Jack: Wait a minute. Chest pain?
John: Jack, don't overreact.
Phyllis: That's not anything to joke about, john.
Gina: So I kept reminding him all the way to memorial.
John: Look, all of you,
I am fine.
The ekg was normal.
Jack: Then it definitely wasn't a--
John: It was not a heart attack.
Jack: Then what the hell was it?
John: (Sighs)
Gina: Are you gonna tell them or am I?
Jack: Dad?
John: All right. It was acute angina brought on by stress. Very simply, I just had a few unpleasant words with someone.
Jack: At gina's?
Phyllis: Who?
John: If you have to know, it was diane. Things got very unpleasant. I mean, that woman just does not know when to stop.
Gina: I got her out of there,
but not before she had a chance
to upset your father.
John: Now listen, jack, is she really going to be able to take kyle to florida?
Jack: No, she is definitely not. As a matter of fact, she's not gonna be a problem for much longer.
Gina: I'm just sorry I ever gave her the benefit of the doubt.
Phyllis: We won't hold it against you, gina.
Gina: Thanks.
John: Well, that's good, son. All right, listen, I'm gonna go up and get some rest.
Gina: I'm gonna go, too. Bye-bye.
Jack: Thank you, gina.
Gina: So... you take good care of yourself.
John: Thanks. Thanks so much for tonight.
Gina: You're welcome.
John: Good night, you two.
Phyllis: Good night.
Jack: Good night, dad.
Phyllis: So you still think that woman should be walking around free?
Jack: Sweetheart--
Phyllis: One phone call. One phone call, jack.
Jack: Honey, we've already had this conversation.
Phyllis: So you really think that you can control her?
Jack: As much as I may personally want to see diane pay for the crimes she's committed, sweetheart--
Phyllis: I know. I know. I don't--I know. You don't want to do anything on account of kyle.
Paul: Look, isabella, I know I've been distant--
Isabella: Distant?
Paul, you've been
in some other world.
Paul: Yeah, I know. I'm sorry.
Isabella: I don't want your apologies. I want to know what's wrong.
Paul: God, I don't even know how to explain it.
Isabella: Fine. Don't explain.
Paul: I'm not trying to put you off.
Isabella: Why do I get this feeling that you're upset with me, and I don't know why?
Paul: No, no, honey, it's not you. Really, it isn'T. It's me.
Isabella: Your feelings have changed for me? Is that it? Because if it is, you have to tell me, paul, so I can make plans.
Paul: No, you don't have
to make plans.
I didn't even know
you were upset.
You know, you've been keeping
things from me.
Isabella: What-- what do you mean? What are you talking about?
Michael: Oh, excuse me. May I borrow the business section? Oh, at last, she's alone. Here's my chance.
Christine: Your chance?
Michael: I saw you talking with an acquaintance of mine.
Christine: Oh, andy richards. Yoknknow him?
Michael: No, not really. I know a friend of his.
Christine: You must be talking about paul williams. I just met him, too. He left.
Michael: Oh. So who are you? What's your name?
Christine: You'll forgive me, mister...
Michael: Sorry.
Baldwin, michael baldwin.
I guess I got a little ahead
of myself.
Just so eager to meet you.
Christine: And why is that?
Michael: As I said, you were talking to someone I know.
Christine: So that'syour story, and you're stickin' to it.
Michael: That's right, until you tell me your name.
Christine: I'm kelly simmons.
Michael: Kelly simmons. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Let me guess, um... hotlanta?
Christine: Actually, charleston, south carolina.
Michael: Oh. Originally, or... passin' through? Stayin' on? What?
Christine: Visitin' a friend.
Michael: Hmm. So you're not here on any business?
Christine: You ask a lot of questions.
Michael: Aw, it'S...
it's an occupational hazard.
I'm a lawyer.
Christine: Ll, that explains it.
Michael: So your friend showing you a good time?
Christine: Actually, she's kind of busy.
Michael: Ah, your friend's a woman.
Christine: Yes, she's a woman.
Michael: Well, if you're not averse to making a new friend who happens to be a man, perhaps I can show you around town myself.
Victor: Let me explain something to you.
Victor: I'm trying to make
a point with you,
mr. Guittierez.
You don't get involved
with dangerous people
unless you're a force
to be reckoned with.
If you hadn't brought
larry warton into this
and me, I can assure you
those two guys would'V....
would've killed you.
Diego: I've sure learned my lesson. Is there anything I can get you before I leave?
Victor: No, thank you.
Diego: Okay. Then I'll get out of your hair.
Christine: You want to show me around town?
Michael: I know the city well.
Christine: That's very nice. I just--I don't want to inconvenience you.
Michael: Oh, I have been inconvenienced in far worse ways, believe me. You'll be safe with me.
Christine: Will I?
Michael: I'm not a big bad wolf, although there are people in this town who think I am.
Christine: Like who?
Michael: Nobody you know.
Christine: Oh! Well,
how convenient for you.
Michael: Touché. So what do you like to do?
Christine: I beg your pardon?
Michael: The only clue I have is that you're, um, sitting in a coffeehouse.
Christine: That is correct.
Michael: Mm-hmm. And you're... you're drinking coffee.
Christine: (Gasps) so I am.
Michael: You're not gonna help me out here, are you?
Christine: Well, you don't strike me as a person who needs any help.
Michael: That is a very astute observation. May I make one about you?
Christine: Mmm. Be my guest.
Michael: I think you're hiding something.
Paul: Look, isabella, I-I know you're on edge.
Isabella: Paul,
something is happening to you.
Everything is different.
Something seems wrong.
I don't know what to do.
I don't know how to handle this.
Paul: Well, can you just stop it? Because... you're gonna make yourself more upset than you already are. Look, I... uh...
Paul: Lisn.N. This is my fault. It's all my fault, and I can't go on doing this to you.
Isabella: Your fault?
Paul: You see, you're right, you know. Things haven't been the same since the christening, and there is-- there's a reason for that. It's a reason I've been keeping from you.
Paul: I can't go on this way. You have a right to know the truth.
Isabella: The right?
Paul: Isabella...
Paul: I never wanted you
to find out about this.
And I know it's gonna hurt you,
but I'm beginning to believe
that keeping you in the dark
is gonna hurt you more.
Isabella: Paul, you're scaring me. What...
Paul: I scare myself.
Paul: It's true. I, um, I lost it the night of the christening when I tried to... pound baldwin to death. But it really doesn't compare to what happened later.
Isabella: Later that night?
Paul: Yeah.
Isabella: When you went to christine'S.
Paul: Yeah. I went to see her.
Isabella: To apologize. You said you needed to apologize to her in person.
Paul: Yeah. I-I know that's what I told you. And I think-- I think that's why I went there.
Isabella: You think.
Paul: I'm not sure.
Something happened that night.
Something that never,
ever should've happened,
and I... I...
I never should've let it happen.
But the truth of the matter is
I made it happen.
Isabella: Oh, my god, paul, what are you trying to tell me?
Paul: Well... I went over to the apartment, and I, uh... started talking to chris.
Isabella: But that's not all you did, is it?
Paul: No. No, it isn'T.
Paul: I went over there, and I had... I had sex with chris that night.
Paul: Isabella, I'm sorry.
You have no idea
how sorry I am.
Victoria: Sorry, I didn't mean to go off like that.
Brad: No problem.
Victoria: You know, I've noticed that you're not telling me to hang in there. That love conquers all. Afraid I'll bite your head off?
Brad: No, no. I'm not telling you those things because I'm not sure I believe them myself. (Cell phone rings)
Victoria: Excuse me. (Ring)
Victoria: Hello?
Diego: Hey, you, it's me. I'm back at the room. How soon can you get over here?
Victoria: I'll be right over.
Brad: Taking off?
Victoria: No point
in dragging it out.
Hey, next time...
we talk...
it's your turn.
I have a feeling you're
going through something.
You okay?
Brad: Good luck. Drink's on me.
Victoria: Thanks.
Andy: I don't know what to say, diane. The truth will set you free.
Diane: Whatever I did, I did for my son.
Andy: You did for your son?
Diane: Yes, and now I'm going to lose him-- that sweet little boy asleep in there.
Andy: Lose him how?
Diane: Jack and phyllis offered me a deal. If I sign over full custody, then they won't use this evidence to convict me.
Andy: Did you agree to this?
Diane: Andy, what choice do I have? I mean, there's no way out. I have to give them an answer by tomorrow.
Andy: Just calm down here.
Just breath--just calm--
look at me breathe.
Listen to me,
we need to talk about it.
Just listen, talking--
Diane: What good will talking do? They're going to take my child away.
Andy: No, they are not. You--diane, you're the mother. You are the mother of that child. This--this is about changing logistics where the majority of the time is spent with that boy.
Diane: You wouldn't say that if it was your son.
Andy: Okay. Okay, maybe not. Diane, if you're gonna even seriously consider this, you have to ask yourself something-- what is the worst thing that can happen?
Diane: Well, if I don't accept it, and then I get convicted--
Andy: You could be looking
at a lot of lost years here--
years without kyle, in any way,
she e or form.
And if you accept it,
this fire, all the stuff...
it's just gonna go away.
And you're gonna finally
get stuff with your life back
in some normal fashion.
You'll still have your boy
to raise.
Don't you--okay--
you're not gonna have custody,
but you'll be able
to spend time with him,
love him,
influence him,
raise him--watch him grow up
to be a fine young man.
Diane: But I would be all alone. I wouldn't have anybody. Kyle is the only joy I have in my life. So do you know what? Just don't stand there and give me some stupid pep talk about how my glass is really half full and that I ought to be grateful, 'cause you have no idea...
Diane: Oh, god.
Jack: I just don't think my son is well served having a mother in the state penitentiary.
Phyllis: What about a mother who's a criminal and can go off at any minute?
Jack: She won'T.
Phyllis: Do I have your personal guarantee on that?
Jack: Honey, if you had
a sword like that hanging
over your head...
Phyllis: Well, you see, you can't compare the two of us because I'm sane and she's not. Besides, if diane does cooperate and if she is reasonable, who knows how long it's gonna last? I mean, three years down the road, when she's burning down buildings again and framing me for it, can we go to t p police and say, "hey, look what we have."
Jack: I'm sure there must be some statute of limitations.
Phyllis: Exactly, exactly. And that'll dictate how long we have until we lower the boom.
Jack: I just wish you weren't so skeptical about this working out.
Phyllis: You know, I can't--
I'm just trying to point out
the advantages of having this
freak out of our lives, jack.
Jack: This is not an ideal outco b by any stretch of the imagination. I know that. Here's what I'm thinking-- if we have kyle with us for the next however many years, after that diane can try to come after him. It won't fly then. Kyle will have been with us. He'll know where he belongs-- with us. (Key unlocking door)
Diego: Hey, you.
Diego: I see you're still upset with me.
Victoria: And you seem happy, which means you did it. You went ahead with your plan.
Diego: Well, the scum who robbed me, they're in jail now.
Victoria: Look, I know
you're dying to tell me
how brave and clever you were,
but I'm really not interested.
Diego: If I thought it could be that easy, I would, but you need to know what happened. I need to give it to you straight.
Victoria: Whatever the hell that means.
Diego: It means your dad was involved. He wound up running the show. It's a damn good thing the way it all turned out, but...
Victoria: But what? Diego.
Diego: Okay, you know what? Victor is gonna be fine. He's okay, just one of the guys got a jump on him... knocked him out cold.
Victoria: So you're sure you're all right?
Victor: I'm all right, darling. Thers s no cause for concern. Okay?
Victoria: Yeah, like I really
believe that.
Victor: I'm all right. Are you with diego now?
Victoria: Yeah, I'll check in with you later on. Just get some rest, all right?
Diego: Your dad's okay, right?
Victoria: So he says. You know, I'm not really surprised that he decided to take charge, that's really his style. But how'd you get him to go along with it? 'Cause he didn't even want to have anything to do with you.
Die: No, he really didn't have much choice. I set it up at the ranch.
Victoria: You did what? He didn't know about this beforehand? You just did it, and what, hoped for the best?
Diego: There's no way
I could've pulled this off
without your father.
He had to be a part of it.
There's no other way.
Victoria: Oh, my god. You brought those people to our home. I mean, there are children there. You knew that! It's one thing to totally disregard my feelings, it's another thing to put innocent people's lives at risk. I mean, what the hell were you thinking?! How could you be so careless? Why aren't you saying anything?
Diego: Because you're right. I have no excuse, and I won't try to defend myself, because I can'T.
Victoria: Great.
Diego: I just should have thghght this through better. Your dad helped me see that, but I was so obsessed with nailing these bastards... that's my only excuse.
Victoria: I still don't
understand why.
I mean, why was it
so important--
more important than us?
More important than our future?
Diego: You know what? You're what's important to me. And that's really why I did this.
Victoria: To impress my father?
Diego: How many times has he thrown it in my face that I'm some quitter? That I'm a guy who hits the road when the going gets ugugh? That I'm just a punk? You know what? I needed to stand up on my own for the first time. And I need to show him, and everyone else, that I can do it for myself. The bottom line is I think he respects me a lot more than he did.
Victoria: And that makes it all better.
Diego: Sweetheart,
it doesn't make it better,
but I promised your dad
and I am promising you,
I will never go down
that road again...
not ever.
You know what?
I think...
we should just move on
with our lives and put this
all behind us.
You know what?
We should move into
that condo that you picked out. I'I'm really ready for that.
In fact, I just--I can't wait.
Victoria: There's just one problem. I don't know if I'm ready.
Andy: It's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay. Look, why don't i get out of here so you can get some sleep?
Diane: Andy, will you please stay? You can, um... you could sleep on the couch. I just... I just don't want to be alone tonight. Please.
Phyllis: Wow, you got a lot of faith in me, don't you?
Jack: Are you kidding me?
You're the best thing
that ever happened to me. You'reoioing to be
the best thing
that ever happened to kyle.
I believe that with everything
in me.
Phyllis: Well, I'm going to try to be a very loving, devoted stepmother.
Jack: You're going to be the very best... the best. And we are going to have a wonderful life together.
Phyllis: With your son.
Jack: With our son. )
Diego: Victoria, I know this has been rough on you, my needing to do this, but we love each other. Conquers everything, right? You know what? I know it's late. We can get a key to that condo, and we can go have a look. You know, I'd really like to do that.
Victoria: No. Mnh-mnh. No, not right now. I need to think about this.
Diego: Honey, what is there
to think about?
We're gonna be fine.
We are fine.
Victoria: I'll talk to you in the morning.
Diego: Please don't do this.
Victoria: Diego, I gotta take a drive. I need to clear my head.
Diego: When will you be back?
Victoria: I don't know.
Christine: If you'll excuse me, it's getting late. My friend's gonna wonder what happened to me.
Michael: Um, well, then maybe we'll see each other here again sometime.
Christine: Good night, mr. Baldwin.
Michael: Kelly simmons... who are you and what are you after?
Isabella: You had sex with christine?
Paul: Believe me, I am so sorry.
Isabella: The night
our son was baptized?!
Paul: If I could take it back...
Isabella: But you can't! You can't take it back! It happened!
Paul: I never wanted you to find out.
Isabella: No, of course you didn't want me to find out that you betrayed me and our son on that night, of all nights?!
Paul: I know. It was wrong. It was so wrong. I hurt the people I love the most. I hurt you. I hurt our son. I hurt chris.
Isabella: Chris. Chris. I don't care about christine! I can't believe you did this! I can't believe it!
Paul: I feel sick inside. Isabella, I hate myself.
Isabella: You destroyed us. You destroyed us. You destroyed our family! You destroyed our house! That's why you lied! You lied and you lied and you lied about your feelings for christine, and I knew! And I hate you for this! I hate you! I can't believe you did this! I can't belie e you did this! I don't even know you. I don't know who you are.
