Jack: D-did you just say it's newman?
Ashley: I did.
Jack: Oh, dear god. Victor is abby's father?
Ashley: Biological father,
that's all.
Nothing more.
Don't look at me that way.
I know what you're thinking,
and, no, we didn't have
a sordid affair or any kind
of a romance.
Jack: Just a nice little business arrangement, huh?
Ashley: No. It wasn't like that, either.
Jack: Oh, my god. Victor is abby's fa-- if he... boy, this just opens a whole world of tou h questions, doesn't it?
Ashley: You got that ght.
Jack: And bradley didn't know?
Ashley: He does now.
Jack: Since when?
Ashley: Last night.
Jack: And then he ran off?
Ashley: I can't find him. He won't answer his cell phone.
Jack: Oh, great.
So bradley's wandering around
some...
I have to ask, ash--
how did this happen?
How did you let this happen?
Ashley: You don't think I've asked myself that a thousand times? "What was I thinking?" How could I do something that would cause so much devastation to so many people's lives?"
Victor: A double tequila, straight up, please. Thank you.
Ashley: Stop asking me so many questions and promise me something. If you ever cared about me, if you were ever my friend, then please promise me that you'll stay as far away from brad as possible.
Victor: But why?
Ashley: Just do it, please, for my sake.
Victor: Thank you.
Nikki: You sure it was only the support that you gave her that he was upset about?
Victor: What do you mean,
am I sure?
What the hell are you implying?
Nikki: As he was leaving, he said a very strange thing to me.
Victor: What did mr. Carlton say to you?
Nikki: That I don't really know my husband as well as I think I do.
Neil: Well, never thought I'd see the day. You look like a man who needs that drink.
Victor: Neil! Sit down.
Neil: Sure. Anything I can do to help?
Victor: Something is puzzling me. Can't seem to figure it out.
Neil: Something involving what or whom?
Victor: Aewew people. Among others, brad carlton.
Olivia: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you.
Brad: I'm the one
who's sorry.
Olivia: Don't be. You never have to say you're sorry to me, no matter what happens.
Wes: What the...?
Dru: Where do you think you're going? (Laughs) (door slams)
Wes: Dru, is that you?
Dru: No. It's queen latifah.
Wes: (Laughs) all right, I gotta call security. I don't know who let you in my room, but--
Dru: Would you stop runnin' your mouth? You're ruining the effect.
Wes: The effect?
Dru: Yeah. That's better.
Wes: Ohh.
Dru: That's better.
Now, monsieur,
your evening awaits you.
We got a little bit of fire,
all right?
Ooh, I got a little bit
of this.
Bam.
(Laughs)
ooh. Mmm.
Well?
Cody: Hey, sharon.
Sharon: Hi, cody.
Cody: Can I get you anything?
Sharon: Um... yeah, I'll have a coffee. A decaf.
Cody: Okay.
Cody: I haven't seen you around lately.
Sharon: Yeah. Well, I've been busy with the kids and, um... well, miguel's watching them now, so I just thought I'd stop by and check in.
Cody: Oh. If you're looking for nick--
Sharon: Is he here?
Cody: No, no. I just figured that--
Sharon: Oh. Okay. Good. I mean, better off.
Cody: Hey, it's on the house.
Jack: Oh, jeez, sis, I can understand your wanting to have a child.
Ashley: Yeah. I wanted a child. My biological clock was ticking. There was no man in my life, and I wanted a child.
Jack: And of all the men in the world, you had to choose newman as the donor dad?
Ashley: I'm sorry. I wasn't comfortable with an anonymous man fathering my child.
Jack: It happens all the time. In fact, that's how it normally works.
Ashley: It doesn't happen to me. I guess I needed a face or a voice or something.
Jack: Or a mustache. Oh, god. Why newman?!
Ashley: Look, I know
you have nothing but contempt
for the man--
Jack: Yeah, and for good reason.
Ashley: You and I will never agree on him, okay? I admire his strength, and I admire his intelligence.
Jack: What about his character? His ethics?
Ashley: He was shaped by his environment, jack.
Jack: Oh, please.
Ashley: The bottom line is I'm not in love with him.
Jack: Well, thank god for small favors.
Ashley: But I do find him to be a remarkable and caring man with a lot of terrific qualities.
Jack: Okay. Okay. So you're not in love thth him. What, you're in love with his genes?
Ashley: Yeah. At the time, yeah.
Jack: What about now?
Ashley: Now I'm in love with my daughter so much, I don't care whose genes helped create her.
Jack: Well, I guess there's the big question. Does bradley feel the same way? Can he accept the fact that victor newman, a man he hates, is abby's biological father?
Neil: Thank you very much. Victor, um, I don't mean to pry, but I got a good ear.
Victor: Mm-hmm. How well do you know brad carlton?
Neil: Personay? Um, not terribly well. I worked with him during that time when you and i were going to--
Victor: That time
when he and jack abbott
had temporarily stolen
my company from me.
Neil: Yeah, that's right. I met him, on occasion, in other contexts. Why? What's going on with carlton?
Victor: I don't know. Apparently, he's gunning for me. No idea why, but it involves nikki and ashley, somehow.
Neil: Mmm. How'd you find out?
Victor: I talked to both of them.
Neil: So these women know about the problem. They just won't tell you whwhat it is.
Victor: I don't think nikki knows what it's all about. She came to me looking for answers.
Neil: Mm-hmm.
Victor: I said I had none.
Neil: And ashley?
Victor: I don't know. Seems to me that... something is going on between her and brad carlton. Can't figure out what it is. I had a very strange conversation with her-- strange and disturbing both.
Neil: About brad?
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Neil: You know, victor... I know there's a lot of history between you and ashley. After all, you once were married. But is it possible in brad's mind, somehow, that you're part of the problem?
Victor: I have no clue. I guess it's possible. Anyway, enough about me. How are things with you?
Wes: Here's to a wonderful beginning to a fantastic evening.
Dru: Mmm. Cheers.
Wes: So after dinner...
Wes: Well, I just, uh... I wasn't clear on the order of events here. I mean, are we going to dance, or bubble--
Dru: You know, before we go there, um... I wanna talk to you first.
Wes: Oh, okay.
Dru: It's nothing earth-shattering, but I think you'll agree it's for the best.
Wes: For the best, huh?
Dru: Mm-hmm. Um, lily and I--we've decided to move in with neil.
Wes: What did you just say?
Druplplease don't get dramatic on me.
Wes: Dramatic?
Dru: You know what? You are a therapist. You know what what lily's been going though.
Wes: I am not even thinking
about lily right now.
I knew it.
This whole production--
you were setting me up.
Dru: I was not setting you up, wes.
Wes: Oh, please. Don't even try to pretend--
Dru: I did this for you. I did this for you--for us.
Wes: So you could lighten the blow? Thank you very much, dru.
Dru: Okay. You know what? Maybe this is a bad idea. Maybe I shouldn't have done this at all. Can you take it down a thousand?
Wes: You are moving in with your ex, and you want me to take it down?
Dru: Okay. You know that this would be benicicial for my daughter to live with both of her parents. You know that.
Wes: Well, I would love
to believe that's the reason,
but I can't get past
one thing, dru--the way
you keep pulling this garbage
over and over--
Dru: Garbage?
Wes: Yes. You keep using lily as an excuse to get closer to neil... and I am sick of it, dru. I am so sick of it.
Dru: I am not using lily to get closer to neil or to throw you any shade.
Wes: No?
Dru: No.
Wes: Oh, I'm crazy, then.
I ask you to be my wife.
You leave me hanging.
I plan a wonderful trip
back to paris,
which you agree to
until the last minute,
when you decide
to spend the holidays here
with your ex.
And now you're moving in
with the man.
You know the worst part?
You can't even give me
a straight answer.
I mean, I asked you
the other day straight out,
does neil have any reason
to hope that you guys
would be back together--
Dru: And I told you--
Wes: You told me nothing! You ducked the question entirely.
Dru: Honey, come on. Look at this place. You're making a mountain out of a molehill. Come on.
Wes: I wish I were, dru. But from where I stand, either you are not being straight with me... or you're not being straight with yourself.
Dru: Sweetie, listen, I love you. I love you. Is that what you need to hear?
Wes: I need to hear the truth!
Wes: How do you feel about neil?
Dru: He's important. He--he is lily's father.
Wes: Do you love him,
too, drucilla?
Do you?
Dru: Yeah. Yeah, I love him. But he is the father of my child, and it ends there.
Wes: I don't think you know where it ends.
Victor: I'm very happy to hear your family's moving in with you.I know that you always wanted to spend some more time with your daughter.
Neil: Victor, I can't tell you. Things are working out even better than I hoped. You know, I'm dealing with the booze, keeping that old devil at bay. Got my family back with me.
Victor: Glad to hear that, neil.
Neil: I guess
where dru's concerned, though,
whatever's meant to be will be.
As for lily, there I'm gonna
make something happen, you know?
I'm gonna be a father
to that child.
Victor: Just remember one thing--having a daughter is very, very precious.
Neil: Yeah. Speaking of which, how are things going with you and victoria? I've heard there-- there's been some problems along the way. I'm sorry about that, victor. I mean, you don't deserve this.
Victor: Yeah.
Olivia: Hi, rose. It's me. Yeah. Any calls? I know. I left my pager on my desk. No. No, I'm not planning to come back this evening. If there is an emergency, you can reach me at the genoa city hotel, suite 536. Yeah. Okay, thanks.
Man: Excuse me.
Look, I hate to bother you,
but do you mind
if I borrow your sugar?
Sharon: Uh... no. Here. It's all yours.
Man: Thanks.
Man: Hey. Um, me again. Look, I don't want to bother you, but I was wondering. I've been over there working for a while, and, uh, I could really use a break. And I happened to notice you have an extra magazine.
Sharon: Oh. Uh, you wanna borrow it?
Man: I'll bring it back. I promise.
Sharon: No, it's not that, it's just I'm not sure that you'll want to read it.
Man: Hey, beggars can't be choosers.
Sharon: Okay.
Man: Great. This is exactly what I...
Sharon: (Laughs)
warned ya.
You still wanna read it?
Man: Yeah, sure. This is, uh... I'm curious to find out what the, uh... hot new looks for spring'll be.
Sharon: Oh, really?
Man: Yeah, yeah. Then I can move on to the... quiz of the month, the "is your man a mama's boy?" Perfect. This'll really be enlightening. Now you realize that I've asked to borrow this, and I have to take it... unless you wanna spare me the humiliation of reading a woman's magazine in public and invite me to join you?
Sharon: Have a seat.
Man: Whew! Saved. I'm david.
Sharon: Sharon.
Nick: Cody, what's up, man?
Cody: Hey.
Nick: Anything going on
I should know about?
Cody: Uh, sharon's here.
Nick: In the office?
Cody: No, out back.
David: Which perfume do you prefer?
Sharon: Um, perfume, well...
Nick: Who's the guy?
Cody: I don't know. He comes in once in a whe.E. Seems all right.
David: Do you like to shop for bags and shoes?
Sharon: Oh, love bags.
David: Yeah? (phone rings)
Rose: Dr. Winters' office.
Dru: Hi, rose, it's dru. I need to speak to my sister, please.
Rose: Sorry, dru, she's gone for the day. Do you want to leave a message?
Dru: Wow,
it's really important.
Do you have any idea
where she might be?
Rose... it's important.
Rose: Genoa city hotel, suite 536.
Dru: Genoa city hotel? What... you know what, rose? Thank you so much, okay? Bye-bye. You're just downstairs. Olivia, what are you up to?
Victor: Thanks for lending me an ear. Feels good to hear a friendly voice. Haven't heard much of that lately.
Neil: Well, victor, if there's anything I can do to help, you let me know. You want me to speak to ashley, I will.
Victor: No, that's all right. I've said more than enough already.
Neil: Obviously, this conversation stays right here between us.
Victor: I appreciate it, neil.
Neil: Victor, I gotta tell you, it means a great deal to me that we can talk this way. You know, your trust and confidence in me means more than you know in pulling my life together. So again, if there's anything I can do to help, you just tell me.
Victor: Well, if yohehear anything about brad carlton that might pertain to me, you let me know. All right?
Neil: Of course I will.
Victor: And remember
one thing, neil--
cherish those moments
with your family,
because happiness
is very fleeting.
Cherish those moments.
Treasure them,
because darker days will come...
and then you gotta
remind yourself
of all that was good.
Jack: No wonder newman keeps butting into your life. God, he shows a hell of a lot more restraint than I ever give him credit for-- allowing another man to raise his daughter?
Ashley: You don't get it. I didn't ask victor if I could borrow his sperm.
Jack: What are you saying? He doesn't know?
Ashley: Of course he doesn't know, and I don't want him to ever know.
Jack: How the hell do you expect to pull that off?
Ashley: I don't know. But somehow, I've gotta find a way to keep him from ever finding out.
Jack: Oh, jeez, sis, you have gotten yourself into one big mess here.
Ashley: You don't know
the half of it.
Brad stormed out of here
without me telling him.
Jack: Telling him what?
Ashley: That victor doesn't know he's abby's father.
Jack: Honey, you better get to him fast and let him know--
Ashley: I've been trying, jack. I've called the cell phone, the car--
Jack: Believe me, he's on his way to newman right now, and if he--
Ashley: You don't think I know what's at stake? You don't think I know that?
Jack: Sis, if I were in bradley's shoes, newman would be pushing up daisies right now.
Ashley: Damn it, jack, that's the last thing I need to hear.
Jack: What if you're
too late?
What if bradley gets to victor
before you have a chance
to clue him in?
How do you think victor
is gonna react, finding out
the two of you share a child?
Have you thought about that?
David: So you're sitting here reading beauty magazines. Not like you need any tips. I just can't believe you don't have anything better to do, not that I'm complaining.
Sharon: Well, it's just been one of those days, you know? But how about you? You working late?
David: Uh, deadline. I'm a grad student. Cursed by the dreaded dissertation.
Sharon: Oh, what are you studying?
David: You don't want to know. It's, uh, boring. Besides, after dealing with it all day, I'm pretty burned out on the subject.
David: This is a good song.
Sharon: Mm-hmm.
David: Don't suppose you feel like stretching your legs? You don't dance? Promise not to step on your toes.
Sharon: Um... I don't think so.
David: Oh, come on. It's just one dance. I got some pretty cool moves. You t t to see 'em to believe 'em.
Nick: Hey. I'm nick-- sharon's husband.
David: And I'm, uh, gonna be on my way.
Nick: All right.
(Knock on door)
Olivia: Who is it?
Dru: Room service.
Olivia: What are you doing here?
Dru: Well, I called your office and discovered you were holed up over here like the rich and famous.
Olivia: Rose told you I was here?
Dru: You know she didn't have a chance with me. Are you gonna invite me in or what?
Dru: It's dark in here.
You want me to turn on
a light or something?
Olivia: (Whispering) will you ke y your voice down?
Dru: Why? Is the place bugged? What is wrong with you, girl? You're in a bathrobe. I don't know what you did with nate. You're in this swanky hotel. What's going on?
Olivia: Nate's spending the night at a friend'S.
Dru: That doesn't answer my question, liv.
Olivia: Do I need to paint you a picture?
Dru: Is that the bedroom?
Olivia: Yes.
Dru: Reason why the door's closed?
Olivia: There's someone in there.
Dru: Oh, really? Are you telling me...
Olivia: Yes, it happened.
It finally happened.
Dru: Ashley confessed?
Olivia: She told brad the whole truth.
Dru: What did I tell you? Boom, as soon as he found out, he was gonna kick her to the curb.
Olivia: He needed a place to stay. That's why he's here.
Dru: Don't minimize. He's here, and so are you.
Ashley: I'm not going to tell you who the father is, brad.
Brad: Why? Why, you don't trust me?
Ashley: No, it's not that. He doesn't know, and I don't see any reason in the world why I should share that information with anybody else.
Brad: I'm going to be raising this child.
Ashley: I know.
Well, that's exactly my point.
Brad: So you think it's perfectly all right to withhold the baby's paternity from me?
Ashley: Let me asask you something. Why is this so important to you? Now? I mean, until today you didn't know anything about the father. It was just a name that was mentioned that meant nothing to you. When I did talk about him, it was only to reassure you that he wouldn't interfere in our child's life. And now you find out that that man isn't the natural father, and suddenly it's important that you know who the biological father is. I don't get it.
Brad:Ell,
you got it right, ash.
You knew I should know.
And you knew
you weren't about to tell me.
Nick: So I'm kind of surprised to see you here.
Sharon: Don't worry, nick. The kids are fine.
Nick: I wasn't worried about that.
Sharon: Miguel's watching them, and I had to get out, okay? You have a problem with that?
Nick: No.
Sharon: Good.
Nick: So who was the guy?
Sharon: What guy?
Nick: The guy you were talking with.
Sharon: I don't know.
Nick: He didn't give you his name?
Sharon: Why do you care?
Nick: I don'T. I'm just asking. You never seen him before?
Sharon: My god, nick, you're jealous.
Nick: No, I'm not.
Sharon: You think I hit on every guy that comes my way like I hit on diego, right?
Nick: I was just worried.
Sharon: Worried about what? That I'd run off and have some kind of wild affair with him?
Nick: No, that he was bothering you.
Sharon: Did it look like he was bothering me?
Nick: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Sharon: I don't know, nick. You seem to have all the answers. You figure it out.
Ashley: I'm being perfectly
honest with you when I tell you
that nobody knows
who the father of my child is,
not even the man himself.
Only I know.
Only me, and that's the way
I want to keep it,
and I'm hoping that you
can understand that,
and I'm really hoping
that you can accept that.
Brad: What if I can't?
Ashley: What are you saying? It's a deal-breaker? If I don't tell you, then you're calling off the marriage? You know, you told me that you wanted me, and you wanted my child regardless of who the father is, and I know you meant it. But if you're changing your mind, and I get the impression you are, then you need to tell me right now, because we need to deal with it right now.
Brad: Why is the secrecy so important to you?
Brad: We both know
why it was so important
to you, ash.
I never would have married you
if I knew victor newman
was the father of your child.
Dru: Come on, liv. I want to know all the details.
Olivia: Drucilla!
Dru: Don't be a prude with me.
Olivia: I'm not.
Dru: I'm sure you weren't with bradley carlton.
Olivia: I'm not saying it wasn't wonderful and everything...
Dru: Am I hearing a "but"?
Olivia: The man is going through a difficult time right now.
Dru: And I'm sure you did everything in your power to make him feel real good. Come on, liv, you should be jumping for joy. You won.
Olivia: What do you mean? Won? This isn't a game.
Dru: All's fair in love and war.
Olivia: You know,
I just want to be realistic.
Dru: You're not being realistic. You're being depressing and guilty and a martyr.
Olivia: I don't want to get my hopes up.
Dru: He reached out to you. And if you're gonna play it all nice and safe, let's wait and see, you'reoioing to end up with bupkis.
Olivia: He's in so much pain, dru. He'S... and I'm not gonna take advantage of it. I won'T.
Dru: I see he had no problem taking what he wanted to. Would you listen to me? You are his woman now.
Olivia: I'm not his woman! It's nothing like that.
Dru: Oh, you're right.
You're right, you know?
At this rate,
you're absolutely right.
I could scream
I'm so happy for you.
But I won't, 'cause valentino's
in the bed over there.
But I'll tell you one thing.
Olivia, if anyone deserves
a sensitive, fine,
intelligent man, you do,
and if you don't change
your attitude,
you're gonna end up with nothing
but the fumes from his cologne,
girl.
Olivia: Okay, so what do you suggest I do?
Dru: Liv, I know you love brad.
Olivia: I'm not denying that.
Dru: Then go back into that boudoir, honey, and lay it on him thick. Make sure that there is no doubt in his mind. Make sure that he knows this was not a mercy--
Olivia: Okay, okay, okay. Thank you. You can go now.
Dru: All right, I'm just letting you know an opportunity like this doesn't come every day. Don't let it slip through your fingers.
Olivia: Right.
Oh, god.
I wish it
were that simple, dru.
But it's much more complicated.
So much more complicated.
Nick: Let's not argue, okay?
Sharon: Then you'd better change the subject.
Nick: I walk in here and I find my wife talking with some stranger...
Sharon: Oh? Now all of a sudden I'm your wife again?
Nick: Why are you doing this?
Sharon: Doing what? Defending myself?
Nick: No one is attacking you.
Sharon: That is where you're wrong, nick, dead wrong.
Nick: So this is about what happened earlier, right? At our house?
Sharon: I told you how I feel.
Nick: You're moving on with your life?
Sharon: With or without you.
Sharon: You don't understand,
nick.
You don't have a clue
what it takes to raise
two children on your own.
Nick: I'm doing everything I can. I see 'em every day.
Sharon: Spoken like a true divorcé.
Nick: You really like throwing that word around, don't you?
Sharon: I just want you to be prepared.
Nick: For what? Sharon: For the day you get served papers.
Nick: You know, cut me some slack, sharon. This isn't easy on me either.
Sharon: But you don't do anything about it. See, I can't live that way. If I'm miserable, I take action.
Nick: And that's what you're gonna do. You're gonna take some action.
Nick: Want me to take you home?
Sharon: I have a car, nick.
Remember? You bought it for me.
Jack: Ash?
Ashley: Of course I've thought about it, jack. I'm just trying very hard to focus on finding brad.
Jack: Yeah, so you can keep your little secret from newman.
Ashley: You know, it's not just my marriage I'm thinking about. How do you think nikki's going to react when she finds t t that her husband fathered my child?
Jack: Knowing it's you, it might just set her off.
Ashley: Oh, you think it might just set her off? She's gonna go through the roof.
Jack: Maybe, maybe not. Look, it doesn't serve nikki to make this an issue. It's only going to be a wedge in their marriage.
Ashley: That's assuming
that nikki reacts
in a logical manner,
which is a huge assumption.
I mean, knowing nikki,
she's going to flip out,
she's going to blow
this whole thing apart
without even thinking
about the consequences.
Jack: You know, you are right about one thing. This whole thing is spinning way out of your control.
Ashley: Yeah, thanks for reminding me.
Jack: You are sitting on a powder keg, sis. You do know that?
Ashley: Oh, goddodo I ever. There's only one answer. I have got to keep victor from finding out. He can't find out about abby p paternity, because if he does, it's gonna just destroy so many people's lives-- not just brad's and mine.
