Episode #1.5302 ~ Neil’s estranged brother, Malcolm , arrives in Genoa City; Cricket faces a tough battle in court; and Victor takes a leap of faith to help Hope.
Provided By Suzanne
Victor: Dr. Elliott, this is victor newman.
[ Chuckling ] Yes. Thank you. Um...I would like to see you as soon as possible. Right.
[ Chuckles ] No, no. Well, we can discuss it when i get there. Thank you very much. I'll see you then. I appreciate it. Thank you.
[ Phone hangs up ]
Hope: Victor?
Victor: Well, I'm right here.
Hope: Where?
Victor: Here.
[ Both chuckle ]
Hope: I'll find you. There you are.
Victor: Mm.
Hope: Mm.
Victor: You look so pretty.
Hope: Mm, thank you. Mm. You're all dressed up here.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Hope: You got an appointment?
Victor: Well, as it turns out, I don'T. So...I have an idea. Why don't you and I go out and have lunch together? And then afterwards, if you want to, you can come along to jabot, or we'll have the limo drop you off right here?
Hope: Oh, I would love that, but I'm right in the middle of doing something for the blind institute, and I have to finish it today.
Victor: Ohh. That can't wait?
Hope: No, it can'T. But, uh, can I have a rain check?
Victor: Well, that's so disappointing.
Hope: I'm sorry.
Victor: Mm.
Hope: Why don't you try and come home early, and I'll try and be finished with my project?
Victor: You better be finished with your project when I come back home.
Hope: [ Chuckling ] Okay. I'll do my best.
Victor: You better be finished.
Hope: Mm.
Victor: I'm looking forward to coming back home now.
Hope: Mm, I hope so.
Victor: Yes. I'll see you later, okay?
Hope: Okay. Have a good day.
Victor: I will try. And whatever you do, don't you work too hard.
Hope: [ Chuckling ] Alright, I won'T.
[ Door closes ]
[ Telephone ringing ] Hello?
Jack: Hope! Just the person I wanted to talk to.
Hope: Jack?
Jack: That's me.
Hope: Well, it's nice to hear your voice.
Jack: Well, thank you. Listen, I don't know how busy you are, but I was hoping i might stop by there. Is the coast clear?
Hope: Well, victor just left, if that's what you mean, jack. But actually I'm right in the middle of something.
Jack: Well, this will only take a minute. I promise.
Hope: Alright. Come on over. I'll be here.
Jack: See you then.
Hope: Okay. Bye-bye.
[ Phone hangs up ]
Gloria: State your full name, spelling your last name for the court reporter.
Stanley: Stanley shelton. S-h-e-l-t-o-N.
Gloria: Where do you reside, mr. Shelton?
Stanley: 922 burnham, genoa city.
Gloria: Are you employed?
Stanley: I'm a desk clerk at the carriage house hotel.
Gloria: I want to direct your attention to march 10, 1994. Were you so employed and on duty on that date?
Stanley: I was.
Gloria: Did you know a dr. Robert lynch?
Stanley: Yes, ma'am. Dr. Lynch had been a guest of the hotel since february 28th.
Gloria: Mr. Shelton, calling your attention to the morning of march 10th, did you have occasion to see and speak to dr. Lynch?
Stanley: I did.
Gloria: What, if anything, did he say?
Christine: Objection. Hearsay.
Gloria: Your honor, the doctor merely asked that his bill be prepared.
Judge fallon: Counsel, you know that not everything a person says out of court is objectionable hearsay. Objection overruled. Let's get on with it.
[ Elevator dings ]
Victor: What are you doing here?
Victoria: Hey, dad. Moving in.
Victor: Moving in?
Victoria: Yeah. I'm not working in the mailroom anymore.
Victor: Well, so, what do you plan on doing?
Victoria: I haven't figured that out yet, but it's going to be creative, innovative, and very exciting.
Victor: I see. Well, I do admire your confidence, but I have to say that I'm a little disappointed.
Victoria: Why?
Victor: I just thought that you might consider going to college. I think that should be a priority now.
Victoria: Well, I'm sorry, dad. I don't see it that way.
Neil: Look, I've got that projection around here somewhere. Uh, I just can't seem to put my fingers on it right now. No. I'll tell you what -- let me track down those figures, and I'll, uh -- I'll get back to you as soon as I can, okay? Thanks for your patience.
Malcolm: You're neil.
Neil: You're malcolm.
Malcolm: It's been a long time. Aren't you gonna invite your brother in?
Gloria: After receiving this anonymous phone call, did you go to dr. Lynch's room?
Stanley: After I talked with the maid, I did.
Gloria: What did you find?
Stanley: Dr. Lynch lying on the floor, a letter opener sticking out of his back.
Gloria: Let me show you people's group exhibit 1 for identification and ask if those photographs truly and accurately portray the scene you saw, with the letter opener protruding from the doctor's back?
Stanley: They do, except the letter opener is gone.
Gloria: Please take this yellow grease pencil and mark with an "x" where the opener was when you saw it.
Stanley: There.
Gloria: Let me show you people's exhibit 2 for your identification. Have you seen this before?
Stanley: That's the letter opener.
Gloria: The one you saw sticking out of dr. Lynch's back?
Stanley: Yes, ma'am.
Gloria: What was his condition at the time you saw this sticking out of the doctor's back?
Stanley: He was dead.
Gloria: Your witness, counsel.
John: That letter opener -- that comes with the room, doesn't it?
Stanley: Yes. There's one in every room.
John: So the person who used it to kill dr. Lynch didn't come armed with a weapon to do that --
Gloria: Objection! How does this witness know what she came armed with?
John: Well, whether she came with a hat pin or a handgun, she used something that was already there in the room, didn't she?
Jack: Thank you for seeing me on such short notice.
Hope: Well, it's my pleasure. So, how have you been doing?
Jack: I've been terrific.
Hope: Good. I'm glad to hear it.
Jack: You're looking good.
Hope: Thank you.
Jack: I suppose you're a little curious why I'm here?
Hope: I'm very curious why you're here, jack.
Jack: Okay. Hold out your hand.
Hope: What, is this some kind of trick or something?
Jack: No. Come on. I have something incredible to show you.
Hope: [ Sighs ] Before microban 24,....

Neil: So?
Malcolm: Okay to come in?
Neil: No one's stopping you.
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] Whew-whee! Damn. You seem surprised I'm here.
Neil: Yeah.
Malcolm: You know, your wife called me.
Neil: She told me. It was her idea, malcolm.
Malcolm: You're not even curious about your little brother?
Neil: Half brother.
Malcolm: Fine suit, big brother.
Neil: Glad you approve.
Malcolm: [ Scoffs ] Yeah, well, I could never wear anything like that. It's too tight.
Neil: What are you doing here, malcolm?
Malcolm: Well, how long's it been, neil?
Neil: I stopped counting.
Malcolm: What -- five, six years, right?
Neil: Yeah, all of that.
Malcolm: [ Scoffs ] A man shouldn't be away from his family that long, big brother.
Neil: I ask again -- what are you doing here?
Victor: Sweetheart... you know that your husband agrees. He thinks that you should go to college.
Victoria: Yeah, but ultimately he's gonna let it be my decision, which it is.
Victor: You're really inflexible, aren't you?
Victor: Well, I wonder where I got that.
Victor: [ Chuckles ] Yes, I wonder, too. Touché.
Victoria: So, what's going on in your life, dad? How are things with you? I haven't seen you out at the ranch lately.
Victor: No reason to be out at the ranch.
Victoria: Is that all? Or are you avoiding mom?
Victor: No reason to avoid your mother.
Victoria: Where do things stand with you and hope?
Hope: Alright, I love surprises, but I can't stand suspense, so what is it? What in the world is this? Well, it's obviously some kind of bottle. Wait a second. It's a perfume bottle, isn't it?
Jack: Not just any perfume bottle.
Hope: Ooh.
Jack: What you are holding is the prototype for a container for jabot's latest triumph -- a perfume that will be called "hope."
Hope: [ Laughing ] Oh, you're joking, right?
Jack: No.
Hope: You're serious? Jack. This is so elegant.
Jack: You like it?
Hope: It's absolutely incredible. I can't believe that, um... I can't believe that you would actually name a fragrance after me. And holding the bottle here in my hand just makes it all very real, and I don't know what to say.
Jack: It is real, hope. It is real. I just wanted you to be the first to know.
Hope: It's very thoughtful of you.
[ Chuckles ] I love this. I really love this. Thank you.
Gloria: Doctor, do you have an opinion as to the ultimate cause of robert lynch's death?
Well, as a practical matter, robert lynch bled to death internally. And technically, he died from cardiac arrest, which means his heart stopped beating.
Gloria: How quickly does death occur in these cases?
Generally, within a matter of minutes.
Gloria: Now, doctor, do you have an opinion as to the type of instrument that caused this wound?
Yes. A dull -- very dull -- knife-like object.
Gloria: Such as a letter opener?
Yes. In fact, I examined such an instrument that the police recovered. It matched dr. Lynch's wound perfectly.
Gloria: One last question, doctor. Do you also have an opinion as to the amount of force necessary to inflict that particular wound with that type of weapon?
Well, you can't inflict a wound such as the one that i observed simply by pressing an instrument against or falling against the body.
Gloria: Could it be inflicted accidentally?
No, hardly. This was an intentionally inflicted blow, delivered with considerable force.
Gloria: Thank you, doctor. No further questions.
John: So, in other words, a small woman would almost have to throw herself at the person, wouldn't she?
Well, either that or lunge at him with both hands holding the weapon.
John: Impulsively. Or in a moment of rage?
Well, that would certainly do it, yes.
[ Spectators murmuring ] (Dog vo) my beneful superfood blend has me feeling super...
Gloria: Did you know a dentist by the name of robert lynch, dr. Greenfield?
Dr. Greenfield: I did.
Gloria: How did you know robert lynch?
Dr. Greenfield: I had known him as a fellow dentist in new york for a number of years. And beginning this past spring, when I took over his practice, I came to know him better.
Gloria: Please explain what you mean by taking over dr. Lynch's practice. Was he retiring?
Dr. Greenfield: Oh, no. He needed to come to genoa city for a while, and he made arrangements with me to watch over his practice and his dental office while he was gone.
Gloria: When was this?
Dr. Greenfield: Right around the end of february of this year.
Gloria: Now, you say dr. Lynch needed to come to genoa city. How do you know that?
Dr. Greenfield: He told me he did.
Gloria: Do you know why robert lynch came to genoa city?
Dr. Greenfield: Again, I know what he told me -- that he was going to genoa city to get his wife and that he cared for her deeply and missed her terribly and that it would take some time. He didn't know how long before he could return.
Victor: Why are you asking me about hope?
Victoria: Well, you two have been together for months now. What I don't understand is, why don't you just marry her? I guess there's only one reason.
Victor: And what do you think that is?
Victoria: You don't love her.
Victor: I didn't know that you were concerned with my personal life.
Victoria: You're my dad. I'll always be concerned.
Victor: Oh, I guess that's your roundabout way of saying that I have no right to intrude on your life any more than you have a right to intrude in mine.
Victoria: No hard feelings?
Victor: No hard feelings.
Victoria: Listen, dad, i think I've got my office pretty well squared away, and I'm not used to being away from my husband for so long. So, with your permission, I'd like to take the rest the day off.
Victor: You don't need my permission, you know.
Victoria: Good. Then I'll see you later. Bye.
Victor: Bye, sweetheart.
Hope: It makes me very proud having a jabot fragrance named after me. I would have never thought in a million years something like this could happen to me.
Jack: In this life, anything is possible.
Hope: You know, jack, I'm learning that.
Jack: I assume now you're referring to your life with victor?
Hope: [ Chuckling ] Well, look at me -- a blind girl from a farm in kansas who had never been more than 10 miles from her home comes to genoa city and is now living in a beautiful apartment with a man like victor newman.
Jack: Now, just a minute. I think victor ought to be thanking the good lord for someone like you. I hope he realizes what an incredible woman, what a one-of-a-kind person you are.
Hope: You're embarrassing me.
Jack: No, I mean it. He doesn't deserve you.
Hope: Wait a second, jack. Make no mistake -- victor has been very good to me, and I've been very happy here. I am very happy here.
Jack: You know what my guts tell me?
Hope: What?
Jack: That you could be a whole lot happier.
Hope: And what makes you say that?
Jack: Well, for one thing, i don't see a ring on your finger.
Gloria: I have no further questions of this witness, your honor.
John: I take it, dr. Greenfield, you believed everything that dr. Lynch told you about his wife?
Dr. Greenfield: I didn't see any reason not to believe him.
John: Tell me this, then -- did dr. Lynch tell you why his wife was in genoa city?
Gloria: Now, that is hearsay, and I object.
John: Your honor, the prosecution seems to want to have it both ways.
Judge fallon: Mr. Silva, I'm quite capable. Ms. Capshaw, you brought out the conversation between dr. Greenfield and dr. Lynch. Now you're objecting to a further examination of it.
Gloria: Your honor, I was merely asking for the "how" of the conversation. The "why" is a completely different matter.
Judge fallon: Save your breath, ms. Capshaw. You should have thought of that before you undertook this line of questioning. I'm going to allow mr. Silva to elicit the entire conversation, if he so chooses.
John: Thank you, your honor. What did dr. Lynch tell you about his wife?
Dr. Greenfield: He said that she was in a mental institution and he was going to get her to bring her home.
Judge fallon: Is that true?
Dr. Greenfield: Well, he said it. But, no, I guess it wasn't true.
John: What makes you say that?
Dr. Greenfield: She told me it wasn'T.
John: In fact, didn't she tell you it was totally false?
Dr. Greenfield: Yes, sir.
John: Why do you think this man, robert lynch, who claimed to love and care for his wife, would tell you -- you -- a lie like that?
Dr. Greenfield: I don't know. Maybe he was embarrassed to say that she'd left him.
John: So, instead of saying something innocuous, like she'd gone off to visit a friend or a sick relative, he chose to slander her and to say that she was in a mental institution. Is that what you're saying?
Dr. Greenfield: Well, when you put it like that, I -- I begin to wonder.
John: Is it fair to say that what you're beginning to wonder is whether dr. Lynch's-statements about loving and caring for his wife and missing her were equally untruthful and should be disregarded?
[ Spectators murmuring ]
Victoria: Oh, my god. I don't believe this.
Cole: Vicki, what are you doing over here?
Victoria: Reading.
Cole: Is that my manuscript?
Victoria: Cole...
Cole: Vicki, I told you i didn't want you reading any of it.
Victoria: You know, some of this stuff is pretty hot. How do you know about all these things anyway?
Cole: A writer has to have a very vivid imagination.
Victoria: Oh, this seems like a little bit more than an imagination. I mean, it's so sensuous and graphic and real. I mean, it seems like you've experienced this.
Cole: I have.
Victoria: You have?
Cole: Yes, I have. And I like to think of it as our love story.
Victoria: Uh, cole, I hate to break this to you, but we haven't even come close to doing some of the things these people are doing.
Cole: Well, maybe not yet.
Victoria: Cole?
Cole: Yes?
Victoria: You know, i suddenly get this feeling that i might not know everything there is to know about you.
Gloria: Mrs. Thomas, you have stated that you own a travel agency directly across the street from the carriage house hotel. Is that correct?
Mrs. Thomas: Yes.
Gloria: Did you know a guest of the hotel by the name of dr. Robert lynch?
Mrs. Thomas: I made reservations for and issued airline tickets to dr. Lynch, but that's the extent of my knowing him.
Gloria: You said reservations and tickets. Did you make more than one reservation and issue more than one ticket?
Mrs. Thomas: I did. I made two reservations, and i issued two tickets, one to dr. Robert lynch and one to april lynch, to new york's jfk. Then I gave both tickets to dr. Lynch.
Gloria: And that was on the morning of march 10, 1994, the day dr. Lynch was found murdered in his hotel room. Is that right?
John: Objection! "Murdered"? Counsel's stating a conclusion.
[ Spectators murmuring ] Humira patients,...
"The young and the restless"
will continue.
Judge fallon: The jury will disregard counsel's use of the term "murdered." Proceed, ms. Capture.
Gloria: Let me show you people's exhibits 3a and 3b, both for identification. Are these the tickets you issued?
Mrs. Thomas: They are. They have our agency stamp on them.
Gloria: Which ticket was issued to whom?
Mrs. Thomas: 3a was issued to dr. Lynch, and 3b was issued to april lynch.
Gloria: Your witness, counsel.
John: You want to take the cross?
Christine: You want me to?
John: I think it's about time you get into this. Besides, this one's gonna be fun.
Christine: In that case, I'd be happy.
[ Chair legs squealing ] Mrs. Thomas, why didn't you give april lynch the ticket?
Mrs. Thomas: I never saw april lynch.
Christine: You mean she wasn't with the doctor when he ordered or picked up the tickets?
Mrs. Thomas: No, she wasn'T.
Christine: Did you talk to her on the phone?
Mrs. Thomas: No.
Christine: Well, then how do you know she wanted to go to new york?
Mrs. Thomas: Well, I didn'T. I mean, the doctor said she did.
Christine: Did he say she wanted to go or he wanted her to go?
Mrs. Thomas: I don't remember. I just assumed... why would the doctor buy her a ticket if she didn't want to go?
Christine: Well, to answer your question, mrs. Thomas, if dr. Lynch was the type of man who liked to exercise control over mrs. Lynch, might he buy her a ticket regardless of what she wanted?
Gloria: Object to speculation as what the doctor might do.
Judge fallon: Sustained.
Christine: The point is, you really didn't know what the situation was, did you?
Mrs. Thomas: No, I didn'T.
Christine: It would be as unfair for you to say she wanted to go as it would be to say he was forcing her to go.
Mrs. Thomas: Yes, I guess it would.
Christine: So the most you can say is the doctor bought her a ticket. Is that right?
Mrs. Thomas: Yes.
Christine: No further questions.
Gloria: Just one or two questions on redirect, mrs. Thomas. Now, you do know, do you not, that mrs. Lynch's ticket was in dr. Lynch's possession when he left your office that morning?
Mrs. Thomas: Absolutely.
Gloria: But you did not know how mrs. Lynch's ticket got into her possession that night the doctor was killed, do you?
Mrs. Thomas: No.
Victoria: I can't believe I'm just now getting around to this.
Cole: Getting around to what?
Victoria: Wondering how many women there were before me.
Cole: Vicki, why would you even want to get into something like that?
Victoria: Because I'm curious.
Cole: Well, don't be. Besides, you're putting me into a no-win situation here.
Victoria: I am?
Cole: Whatever I tell you is gonna bother you. And you won't believe that I'm telling you everything anyway.
Victoria: Well, that depends on what you tell me.
Cole: Tell you what. Why don't we drop this?
Victoria: Come on. I want to know how many you were...
Cole: Ah, vicki, vicki, vicki. I-I can't remember a thing that happened to me before I met you. There isn't anything even worth remembering, okay? Besides, I got other things on my mind.
Neil: No, I don't have them yet. I understand. Look, something came up that I've got to deal with, okay? I'll get those figures down to you as soon as I possibly can. Thanks for understanding.
[ Phone hangs up ]
Malcolm: A lot of pressure, huh?
Neil: Yeah, that's the name of the game.
Malcolm: You must be playing that game pretty well, big brother. Found your rising star, didn't you?
Neil: [ Sighs ] What about you, malcolm? What are you doing with yourself these days?
Malcolm: You know me. I'm always hanging in.
Neil: Mm. Hanging in. You ever finish high school?
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. Yeah, I did. You surprised?
Neil: College?
Malcolm: No. I learned a trade.
Neil: What?
Malcolm: I'm a mechanic.
Neil: Staying out of trouble?
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] You're looking at new malcolm, man. I'm different, neil, than when you knew me. I'm a changed man now. Your itchy eyes know they're out there
Gloria: What is your business or occupation, mrs. Jefferson?
Mrs. Jefferson: I'm a housekeeper at the carriage house hotel.
Gloria: Were you so employed on march 10, 1994?
Mrs. Jefferson: I was.
Gloria: Calling your attention to that date, did you have occasion to have a conversation with the desk clerk, stanley shelton, about a guest at the hotel, a dr. Robert lynch?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am. I heard stan tell someone who called that dr. Lynch had checked out. I told stan he was wrong, that the doctor was still in his room.
Gloria: How did you know that?
Mrs. Jefferson: I'd opened the door to his room just a little before that to go in and clean, but I saw his luggage was still there, so I called out that I'd come back later.
Gloria: Did you enter the room?
Mrs. Jefferson: No, ma'am. When I saw the luggage there by the door, I figured he hadn't left yet, and I went on to the next room.
Gloria: Earlier that morning, did you have occasion to be on that floor of the hotel?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am.
Gloria: Did you see someone leave that room, dr. Lynch's room?
John: Judge, there's no question mrs. Lynch was in the room at that time. In fact, in our opening statement, we told the jury there is no dispute about the fact that mrs. Lynch inflicted the fatal wound.
Judge fallon: Is that an offer to stipulate to what i assume is an identification?
John: Yes, sir. We can save a lot of time this way.
Judge fallon: Ms. Capshaw?
Gloria: I reject counsel's offer to stipulate. I have a right to prove my case in my own fashion, regardless of what was said in opening statements. Second, I most strenuously object to mr. Silva making this offer in the presence of the jury and to his gratuitous remarks concerning saving time. If counsel truly wants to save time --
Judge fallon: Don't say it.
John: Don't even think it.
Judge fallon: Mr. Silva... you take care of your case. I'll run my courtroom. Thank you. Ms. Capshaw, proceed with your witness.
Gloria: Did you see someone leave that room?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am.
Gloria: Was it a woman?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am.
Gloria: What time was that?
Mrs. Jefferson: Less than one hour before stan -- mr. Shelton went up there.
Gloria: Did there come a time when you saw this person again?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am. At the police station that night.
Gloria: When you saw this person, was she by herself, or was she with other people?
Mrs. Jefferson: With three other women in a lineup, they called it.
Gloria: I'm going to show you three photographs marked people's group exhibit 3 and ask you if this is the lineup that you're talking about.
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am.
John: Judge, what is counsel trying to do? Prove murder by a lot of cumulative evidence, which doesn't begin to address the real issues of this case? I object.
Gloria: Will you please let me try my case?!
[ Gavel banging ]
[ Spectators murmuring ]
[ Banging continues ]
Cole: Now, isn't that a lot better than a lot of stupid talk about the past?
Victoria: You're hiding things from me, cole.
Cole: Mnh-mnh. Not hiding. Just not talking about things that don't matter. You know, all I can think about is you. All I want to think of is you.
Victoria: [ Laughs ]
Cole: Mmm. (Denise) my husband has lung cancer from smoking.
Dr. Elliott: Mr. Newman.
Victor: Dr. Elliott.
Dr. Elliott: It's a great pleasure to meet you. I've heard a great deal about you.
Victor: I've heard a great deal about you. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here.
Dr. Elliott: Please sit down.
Victor: Thank you.
Dr. Elliott: What can I do for you?
Victor: Well, let me get right to the point. I have heard that, in the area of surgical techniques, enormous strides have been made. Is that true?
Dr. Elliott: Yes. They have microsurgery, laser surgery, transplants. We're able to do things that, frankly, were unthinkable not very long ago.
Victor: Which is why I'd like to ask you if there's any hope, any hope at all, for someone who has been blind from birth of ever seeing.
Malcolm: You're looking at a new malcolm, man. I'm different, neil, than when you knew me. I'm a changed man now.
Neil: So, you're a changed man, huh, malcolm?
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] What, hard for you to believe?
Neil: Right.
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, well, I knew it would be.
[ Sighs ]
Neil: You know, you still haven't said why you're here. What are you, just a brother passing through town?
Malcolm: I don't know. I think I might actually stick around awhile, you know? I came here by bus. There's a lot of pretty country out this way.
Neil: Just so you know, i don't have any room for you at my place.
Malcolm: [ Scoffs ] I didn't expect you to. I ain't here to lean on you, neil. I'll go out. I'll find a job. I'll make some cash. I mean, a town this size? Got to be some kind of place to use a good mechanic, right?
Neil: Yeah, right. Well, you are here. Remember, malcolm, it was my wife who made that phone call, not me.
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. And I'm sure you're not gonna let me forget that, are you?
Neil: Don't hold your breath about how it's gonna work out.
Malcolm: Hey, man, you might not even know I'm around, big brother. Wherever I go, I make friends.
Neil: Right. That I got to see.
Malcolm: [ Scoffs ] I'm telling you, neil, I'm a different dude than you knew back then.
Neil: I'll say it again. I'll believe it when I see it.
Malcolm: Yeah, well... I'm gonna get out of here. Who knows? Maybe we'll run into each other here and there, huh?
Neil: Yeah. Right. Who knows?
Malcolm: You know, you really got it made, big brother.
Neil: Let me tell you something, malcolm. You see all this stuff here? This did not come easy.
Malcolm: Why? 'Cause you a black man?
Neil: No, because nothing worthwhile comes easy now, not for any man.
Malcolm: [ Chuckles ] If you say so.
Neil: Hey, malcolm. For the record, nothing would please me more than if you have really changed, you know, if we could be brothers.
[ Door closes ]
[ Spectators murmuring ]
[ Murmuring stops ]
Judge fallon: The jury will disregard the comments of both counsel. It does seem to me, ms. Capshaw, that you might be going into a little too much detail, in view of ms. Blair's opening remarks. That april lynch inflicted the fatal wound is not an issue in question here. We'd all be obliged if you would speed this portion of your case up a bit.
Gloria: Two more questions, your honor. In these photographs, do you recognize the person you saw leaving dr. Lynch's room less than an hour before the body was discovered?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am. She's second from the left.
Gloria: With this grease pencil, will you place an "x" over that person's head? Now please look around the room. Is the person you saw leaving dr. Lynch's room present here today?
Mrs. Jefferson: Yes, ma'am. She's right over there -- april lynch.
Gloria: Thank you, mrs. Jefferson. That will be all.
John: Just one moment, if you don't mind. Did you see this lady run or hide or try to conceal who she was or the fact that she had been in that room?
Mrs. Jefferson: No, sir.
Gloria: You didn't see her crying or hear her call out for help, did you?
Mrs. Jefferson: No, ma'am.
Gloria: In other words, the defendant acted exactly like any other normal person who had been visiting that room and who had just stuck a letter opener four inches into her husband's back. Is that what you're saying?
