Grace: Nicholas, here's the report I've been working on. I know you're anxious to look at it. Nicholas? Geez. What happened? You look like you've been run over by a steamroller.Nick: Yeah. A steamroller named sharon.
Phyllis: Looks like I got here just in time.
Christine: [ Sighs ]
Phyllis: Obviously, you're about to call it a day.
[ Sighs ] You're not going to talk to me, christine?
Christine: We have nothing to talk about.
Phyllis: Look, I'm not here to cause any trouble. I know how hard that might be to believe, but, uh, I'm hoping you'll hear me out.
Christine: I assume this has to do with danny? You've undoubtedly heard that I'm no longer living with paul, and you just couldn't resist putting in your two cents.
Phyllis: I'm well aware that you moved in with nina, believe you me, but, um...that not why I'm here, christine. It's about something much more important than that. Now, will you please listen to what I have to say?
Diane: Victor? I didn't realize you were home.
Victor: I just got here.
Diane: [ Sighs ] I'm glad you did.
Victor: [ Breathes deeply ]
Diane: This place is so lonely without you.
Victor: Mm. I really am sorry that I've been so inattentive.
Diane: I know. You've had a lot on your mind.
Victor: Mm-hmm.
Diane: Jack tells me that the doctors expect nikki to make a full recovery.
Victor: Well, no one has said that, at least not in so many words.
Diane: What have they said?
Victor: It's critical. She may have a relapse. Who knows? Um...I just know the fact that I remarried her and reunited her family is what gave her the strength to pull through this extraordinary crisis.
Diane: Exactly what are you trying to tell me?
Phyllis: Look, five minutes. Five minutes is all I'm asking, and -- and then I promise I'll never bother you again.
Christine: Alright, alright. Five minutes. What's this about?
Phyllis: It's about a man who desperately wants a second chance, a second chance to do what matters more to him than anything else in life, and that is to practice law, which he can no longer do and never will be able to do again without your help.
Very impressive résumé, mr. Baldwin.
Michael: Thank you.
Now, of course, you realize this is only a part-time position.
Michael: Which works perfectly for me since I plan to remain at the law firm part time, continuing my work as a paralegal.
Well, you're obviously a man who likes to stay very busy.
Michael: Well, I feel I can bring some energy and expertise to this position, yes.
Well, based on your legal background, I don't doubt that for a moment. Now, of course, you understand that, as hospital ombudsman, you wouldn't be trying cases. Your role would be to protect patient rights, to advocate on their behalf.
Michael: It's -- it's very similar to work I did for several years at the state corrections facility, where i was incarcerated for a while.
I'm sorry. I --
Michael: I did time at the state corrections facility. Uh, I've been on parole for the last year. This is the name and number of my parole officer, if you care to talk to him. For the record, I'd like to say that I am very sry for whaand I paid very dearly for it. Still, my time behind bars allowed me to reassess my life, uh, my priorities, values. As you can tell from my résumé, I was a very successful attorney at a law firm that's very prestigious in this state. I made a lot of money, won a lot of cases, but I never took the opportunity to work on behalf of anyone but my most wealthy clients. All that changed because of my time in prison. I, uh, brought some letters of recommendation I thought you'd be interested in.
I have to tell you, mr. Baldwin, I'm very impressed with your honesty. I'm also quite impressed with these letters. Not only do they represent recommendations from some renowned local attorneys, but from several key people in the state corrections system, as well. Let me, uh... let me talk to the hospital administrator about this. I won't be long.
Michael: [ Breathes deeply ]
Keith: Jill, before we get into dinner, I want to talk to you.
Jill: About what?
Keith: About my proposal. It's time you gave me an answer.
Jill: Darling, do we have to talk about this now? I've had such a day. I'm really tired.
Keith: Jill, it's been weeks since I asked you to be my wife. When you said you needed some time to think it over, I assumed that meant a few days. I didn't think it would be this long.
Jill: Well, why are you in such a rush for an answer? I mean, aren't we having a wonderful time just going on as we are? Listen, we don't want to have any children together, so i don't see why we just don't leave things as they are for a while.
Keith: You know what I think? I doubt seriously if you're ever gonna marry me.
Jill: [ Scoffs ] Why would you say that?
Keith: I'm right, aren't I? You have no intention of becoming my wife now or ever. Do you?

Jill: That's a very strong statement.
Keith: Yes, I suppose it is. But I've had my suspicions for some time now. And earlier today, they were confirmed.
Jill: Meaning?
Keith: Meaning katherine chancellor stopped by to see me.
Jill: Katherine? Wh-what has katherine got to do with this?
Keith: Kay and I have been friends for a long time. I haven't seen much of her in recent years, but she came to me as someone concerned.
Jill: Oh, you hold it right there. Oh, god. You are not telling me that that crone came into this house and told you I didn't want to marry you?
Keith: She thought I should be prepared. Evidently...
Jill: My god.
Keith: ...She talked with you about my proposal, and she got the distinct impression that you weren't going to accept.
Jill: That outrageous wretch. I cannot believe she did that. This is between you and me, keith. This has nothing to do her.
Keith: Oh, for god's sake, just calm down! I don't give a damn what katherine's motives were. All I want to know is whether it's true.
Jill: [ Sighs ] Okay.
[ Sighs ] As much as I care about you -- and I do care about you -- I just don't think that the two of us were meant to be married. For reasons that I don't even fully understand.
Christine: If you've come here to plead on michael's behalf --
Phyllis: Michael doesn't need me to fight his battles for him. He's more than capable of doing that on his own, as you well know. But tell me something, christine. What exactly is it going to take to convince you that the man has changed? I mean, what more does he have to do to prove to you that he's --
Christine: Oh, just stop it right there. You have no right to ask me that because you didn't know him before.
Phyllis: The point is, I know him now. And I know how sincere he is. Christine, all he's asking for is a chance to pursue the thing, the one thing that he loves most in life -- a career in law. It's his passion, his greatest gift, and right now that talent is sitting there unused. You have the power to rectify that. If you could just look into your heart and forgive. You know, I wonder if you even realize what you're doing to him.
Christine: I'm doing anything to him.
Phyllis: Yes, exactly. And by not doing anything, you're killing him. He's dying inside.
Christine: Your five minutes are up. You know the way out.
Phyllis: Look, no, not yet. Christine, I am not leaving here until I make you understand how unfair you're being by not even considering the possibility that michael has changed.
Victor: The fact that i remarried nikki is what I think allowed her to survive this crisis.
Diane: And...?
Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] I need more time.
Diane: More time?
[ Chuckles ] Oh, uh...
Victor: Don't you understand? There's a chance that she will fully recover. I can't just walk away now.
Diane: How much time?
Victor: I don't know.
Diane: Oh, god. And you can't give me any idea of how long I'm supposed to put my life on hold.
Victor: I told you -- until I'm assured of nikki's full recovery.
Diane: And you're not trying to say something more. You're not trying to tell me.
Victor: No. I'm not trying to tell you anything.
Diane: Then we will be together?
Listen moms, hot pockets are
Keith: Let me make sure i understand you. You don't feel that there's any future for us together as husband and wife, yet you don't know why you feel this way?
Jill: I know how that must sound.
Keith: It sounds like you're not being straight.
Jill: I am being straight.
Keith: Well, then tell me whyand how went wr-- or how i went wrong?
Jill: No, honey, no. It's nothing you did wrong or didn't do wrong.
[ Sighs ] Oh, keith. It -- it's just that... whenever I try to think about the future, I just can't picture the two of us together forever. I can't really explain it any more than that. Oh, keith, I'm so sorry.
Keith: So am I, jill. So am I. Well [Sighs] If this is the way it is, I guess I have to accept it. There is one thing you could do for me, though.
Jill: Name it.
Keith: Given your feelings, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me that, uh, you stay here any longer. It would just make things uncomfortable for both of us. So, um... I suggest you pack your things and go... tonight.
Grace: Nick, if this is none of my business, tell me. But it seems like you need someone to talk to.
Nick: How's it happen, grace? In a span of, what, a few weeks, my whole world turns to hell.
Grace: That's how you're feeling?
Nick: I mean, my marriage was already in trouble, and then this terrible thing happens to my mother? Then I find out that my whole life is changing, and I got nothing to say about it.
Grace: Changing? How? You know, don't you?
Nick: Yeah, I know who cassie really is and why sharon was so obsessed with her.
Grace: It's kind of a shock, huh?
Nick: Kind of? Grace, this totally shoots all the plans I had from my life. I mean, I had enough trouble making time for my son, and now I find out that I have a ready-made daughter?
Grace: Cassie is a wonderful child.
Nick: Yeah, you should know.
Grace: Nick, I am very sorry for the way things turned out.
Nick: I guess you're as messed up about this as I am. I know how much you love that kid.
Grace: Yeah, that's right. I love cassie, but what's the point of talking about that now?
[ Monitor beeping ]
Nikki: [ Weakly ] Victor. How long have you been standing there?
Victor: Long enough to realize how much better you're looking.
[ Beeping continues ]
Christine: I'm being unfair to michael?
Phyllis: Yes. And you're also a hypocrite. You work here at legal aid. You make everyone believe that you devoted your entire life to helping people in need.
[ Scoffs ] Meanwhile, the moment it gets just a little bit personal, you can't even step up to the plate.
Christine: Don't you dare accuse me of lacking compassion. I told michael that the day he can prove to me beyond any doubt that he is no longer the same man he used to be, that would be the day that I would help him, not before, and I still haven't seen that day yet.
Phyllis: Meaning he's gonna have to walk on water to prove to you that he's truly changed?
Christine: I don't know, phyllis. I don't know what he's gonna have to do, but I will tell you one thing -- you are the last person in this world who could ever persuade me to trust him again. So if I were you, I would get out of here before you just make things a lot worse.
Phyllis: I should have my head examined for coming here, much less thinking that I could appeal to your sense of reason. Thanks for nothing, cricket. Yet again, you've proven just how uncaring and heartless you truly are.
[ Door slams ] If new financial obstacles stand between you
[ Doorbell rings ]
Esther: Okay, I'm co-- I'm coming. I'm coming. Oh, it's you.
Jill: Where is she, esther? Katherine! Get the hell down here!
Esther: Jill, you can't go up there.
Jill: Oh, the hell I can'T. Now, you get out of my way, or i will squash you like a tick!
Kay: Well, well, well, i think I hear the future mrs. Keith dennison. Um, my dear, to what do I owe this great pleasure?
Jill: How could you do it? How could you go to keith and tell him that I didn't want to marry him?
Kay: Esther, you do have something to do in the kitchen, do you not, dear?
Jill: You loathsome busybody. Where do you get off telling keith what you did?
Kay: Oh, come now, jill. You and I both know you are never going to marry keith. Oh! But, please, now. He's a dear friend of mine. I think he deserved to know the truth. Obviously, you didn't have the guts to tell him yourself, so i did it for you, which, frankly, I think you should be thanking me for.
Jill: [ Exhales sharply ]
[ Sighs ]
[ Door closes ]
Michael: Ah, perfect timing.
Phyllis: Oh! Geez, michael, you startled me.
Michael: Oh, sorry. Forgiven?
Phyllis: What's with the champagne? Are we celebrating something?
Michael: I have some great news.
Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] What?
Michael: Uh, I took your advice, and I went on a job interview earlier. And I'm proud to say that you are now looking at the newest addition to the staff at memorial hospital.
Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Well, well, well! This is quite a surprise. What are you gonna be doing there? Open-heart surgery?
Michael: Uh, I am the new hospital ombudsman. Now, it's just a part-time positions, so I'll still be working at the law firm, but the type of legal advocacy I'll be doing at memorial is right up my alley.
[ Glasses clink ] Mm, not that this means I'm giving up fighting for my law license. But in the meantime, it'll certainly put my mind and energy to good use. Plus, this is the type of job that might even help my cause.
Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Oh, sweetheart, this is wonderful.
Michael: Mmm!
Phyllis: Mmm! You know what? I couldn't be happier for you, really. This is exactly what you needed. But I can't stop thinking about what you told me earlier about how you won't be a whole man until you're able to practice law again, which is why I did something for you tonight.
Michael: What?
Phyllis: Ah, I went to legal aid, and I saw christine.
Michael: You did what?
Phyllis: I realized how desperately you needed her support, so I figured that if i could convince her --
Michael: Oh, for the love of -- phyllis! Of all the foolish things. There are certain things that you need to just stay out of it, and this is definitely one of them!
[ Glass thuds ]
[ Monitor beeping ]
Nikki: Do you really think I look better?
Victor: Well, there's some color back in your cheeks, you know, a sparkle in your eyes. And there's no mistaking that smile.
I'm going to leave for a short while. Mrs. Newman's being monitored at the nurse's station. I don't foresee any problems, but if you need anything, just ring the call button.
Victor: Thank you. I'm sure we'll be alright. Thank you.
Okay. Thank you.
[ Beeping continues ]
[ Door closes ]
Nikki: Alone at last.
Victor: First time in how long?
Nikki: Too long. After my dvt blood clot, I wondered.
"The young and the restless"
will continue.
Every home has
things it needs.
Jack: So when my dinner meeting wrapped up early, i thought I'd drop by and see how my favorite lady is doing. Hey, kiddo. Are you alright? What is this? It's victor, isn't it?
Diane: [ Chuckles nervously ]
Jack: Here you are alone in this apartment wondering what the hell is gonna happen next, and he doesn't have the decency to stay in touch with you.
Diane: No, th-that's not it. Victor was here a short time ago.
Jack: So, where do things stand? Please tell me the two of you talked about this, what's gonna happen if he --
Diane: No, of course we talked about it. He just needs more time to get a handle on the situation with nikki. You know, she's not out of the woods yet. And he doesn't want to undermine her progress.
Jack: Those were the words he used?
Diane: Yeah.
Jack: You do realize you can take that more than one way?
Diane: Yeah, I realize that.
Jack: But you want to trust in the black knight, believe that he's gonna keep his promise and come back to you. I'm sorry. I'm gonna say it. I know you want to believe in this man. But, honey, more and more, I get the feeling that things are not gonna turn out at all like victor said they will.
[ Monitor beeping ]
Victor: Where else would i be?
Nikki: Never in a thousand years did I think we would ever be back together again. You can't know what you've done for me, victor... that you would marry me again, reunite the family. Nothing would have meant more.
Victor: I never realized how much the children wanted this.
Nikki: They're very happy.
Victor: I know. They've told me.
Nikki: You saved my life, you know.
Victor: Oh, I don't know about that.
Nikki: Yes, you did.
Victor: Hmm.
Nikki: When you said that you wanted to marry me, it gave me the will to live. You're my knight in shining armor. I guess I must be your damsel in distress.
Victor: Not anymore. You're on the way to recovery, you know. We won't accept anything less.
Your migraine strikes,
and the struggle is real.
Jill: Oh, no, no, no, no! You're not gonna walk away from me, katherine chancellor. I'm not through with you yet.
Kay: Oh, for heaven's sakes, jill, now, you and I both know that marriage would have been a mistake, and eventually keith would have realized it also. So, what did that cost you? That cost you nothing, and i saved you a lot of time and a lot of pain.
Jill: We have no way --
Kay: Don't deny it. You know katherine is right.
Jill: Oh, my god, what did i come here for? I should have known that nothing would penetrate that thick skull of yours.
Kay: So, what are your plans now?
Jill: [ Scoffs ] How the devil should I know? I haven't had time to think about it. And thanks to you, katherine, i also now have to find a place to stay.
Kay: Oh, my god. You mean to say that -- that keith kicked you out of the house?
Jill: Oh, you're just quick as a whip, aren't you?
Kay: Well, perhaps you could seek refuge with john. I doubt he'd turn away the mother of his young son, even if you did cause him endless years of pain and grief.
Jill: Oh, shut up! I don't want to ask john any favors anyway. He's taking care of billy for me now. I'm grateful for that.
Kay: Really? Hmm. You really don't have any place to go? Well, perhaps you could check in to one of those dismal, dreary hotel suites.
Jill: Oh, don't lose any sleep over it. I'll find a place to stay.
Kay: Well, perhaps you already have.
Jill: What did you say?
Kay: You could always stay here... with me.
Nikki: It feels like I've been in this hospital for a lifetime.
[ Sighs ] I must look terrible.
[ Monitor beeping ]
Victor: You look beautiful.
Nikki: No, I don't believe you.
Victor: You know --
Nikki: Get me a mirror.
Victor: You don't trust me?
Nikki: No. I want to see for myself.
Victor: You do?
[ Chuckles ]
Nikki: Please?
Victor: A mirror. Now, that's a mirror right there. Have you been looking at yourself?
Nikki: No, and I shouldn't this time.
Victor: I bet that you have.
Nikki: Mnh-mnh.
Victor: I bet you couldn't resist.
Nikki: Ugh!
Victor: [ Laughs ] What?
Nikki: Your eyesight must be going. I look awful.
Victor: You do not look awful.
Nikki: Ugh, I'm so washed out. I need some makeup.
Victor: Would it mean that much to you?
Nikki: Well, it would make me feel human again.
Victor: It would? Well, maybe I can do something about that. I have connections, you know. I'll be right back.
[ Door opens ]
[ Door closes ]
[ Beeping continues ]
Phyllis: Give me a break. I thought I was doing you a favor.
Michael: Well, you probably did more harm than good. If I had made any headway with christine at all, odds are it's undone by you because of your interfering in a situation you had no business being in, in the first place!
Phyllis: Okay, okay! Okay, okay! Maybe I should stayed away from christine, but can we please drop this?
Michael: No, no, we can't drop this, not until I know that I've gotten through to you. This is a pattern with you, phyllis. Time and time again, you rush headlong into situations without regarding the consequences. This has got to stop!
Phyllis: Fine! Fine. Now that I know how you feel, i can wash my hands of the whole situation.
[ Glass thuds ] You can handle little miss cricket totally on your own now, however you see fit, but let me tell you something, michael. You're kidding yourself if you think this woman is ever gonna trust you again. She's not. She's never going to do anything for you. And why you keep banging your head against a brick wall is beyond me.
[ Glass thuds ]
Michael: See, no matter what you've done, phyllis, I'm more determined now than ever to prove myself to christine.
Phyllis: [ Scoffs ]
Michael: I'm gonna make her believe in me. I have to. Never run dry of...
Nick: This report looks great, grace.
Grace: Well, let's hope jack abbott thinks so. I know he's been disappointed with me lately.
Nick: Oh, I think he'll agree with me. This is a swell piece of work. If my opinion counts for anything. I've kind of a mess myself lately.
Grace: You know something? We have got to make a pact. We can't let our personal problems interfere with our work.
Nick: That's easier said than done.
Grace: Nick, I know how committed you are to building your career. You wanted to take the next couple years and get yourself firmly grounded in newman enterprises.
Nick: You know, it's interesting how you understand that because sharon never really could.
Grace: I'm here. I work with you. Sharon's life is wrapped up in her kids.
Nick: Yeah. Her kids.
Grace: Nick, you did know long before you married sharon she had this other child.
Nick: Yeah, but I never thought this kid would jump up and smack me in the face. You know, I don't even want to talk about this anymore. It gets me too uptight.
Grace: Sure. I understand. But, you know, I'm always here if you ever need anything.
Nick: Thanks. It's nice to know there's someone I can talk to.
Jill: What did you say?
Kay: I said you could stay here. You're not really welcome, but i feel rather obligated because i seem to be indirectly responsible for getting you kicked out of keith's house.
Jill: Katherine, I may be desperate. I am not this desperate.
Kay: Suit yourself. I assure you I'm not breathless at the thought of you, uh, roaming around mindlessly in the halls of my home. Still, it is an option. I mean, the house is large enough, you know, that we wouldn't have to see one another.
Jill: This is the last place on earth I would want to stay, and you are the last person i would want to stay with. But I'm here. And my bags are in the car. And you do owe me. Yes! Yes, the more I think about it, this is the perfect way for me to get back at you for what you did to me!
Kay: May I reconsider --
Jill: No, no, it's too late! I accept! Esther, stop eavesdropping and get robert to bring in my bags. Well, katherine, looks like you got a new roomie.
Diane: Stop it, jack. He's just caught up in the emotion of the moment. Nikki almost died. And when she's well again, he will come back to me and we'll pick up where we left off.
Jack: I wouldn't count on it.
Diane: [ Sighs ]
Jack: I'm sorry. I know you don't want to hear this, but I'm not gonna stand here and lie to you just to make you feel better. I have serious concerns about where victor's head is on this issue, and I think if you'll admit it, you do, too.
Diane: Well, whatever my concerns are, it doesn't change what I know in my heart -- that victor and I will be back together again. We were on our second honeymoon when we heard about the shooting. I am certain that we will be on that jet again very soon. I have to believe that. He promised me.
[ Monitor beeping ]
Nikki: Where did you go so mysteriously?
Victor: I went to the hospital store.
Nikki: Oh, yeah? What's in the bag?
Victor: Well, I had one of the nurses help me get all kinds of stuff for makeup, you know, I mean...
Nikki: You got me makeup?
Victor: Yeah.
Nikki: [ Sighs ] I'm so weak. I don't know if I can even put it on. I know -- would you?
Victor: I don't know how to put makeup on.
Victor: Please? Please?
Victor: Alright. What do I do first?
Nikki: Let me see what you have there.
Victor: Alright. What's all this here?
Nikki: Well, let's see. We need a little powder base. Open it.
Victor: Powder base.
Nikki: There we go.
Victor: That it?
Nikki: Uh-huh. And you just put -- [Breathes deeply] Put a light coat of that all over my face.
[ Monitor beeping ] I feel like a different person.
Victor: [ Laughs ]
Nikki: Thank you. Thank you so much.
