John: Let me know if you need any help with anything.

Hugh: Yeah, sure.

John: Hey.  What are you doing here?  Huh?  How's Jess doing?  Hey -- slow down.

Natalie: She's -- she's just sleeping, and I'm driving myself crazy, you know, worrying, so I decided to come here and get this place organized, you know?

John: Yeah, that sounds relaxing.

Natalie: It is, as long as you're here.

Bo: John?  My office, please.  Now.

Bo: I just got off the phone with the assistant warden at Statesville prison.  He wanted to talk about your request for added security to inmate John Doe, AKA Cristian Vega.  He said he couldn't really make a decision on that until Warden Stevens got back from vacation tomorrow.

John: Listen, Bo, I --

Bo: I don't get it.  You put this guy away, personally.  So what are you doing now trying to help him?

Cristian: I have a right to speak to the warden.

Carlo: The warden's not going to help you.  No one is.

Cristian: You know, you don't own everyone, Hesser.

Carlo: No, just everyone who matters.  I hear you've been making noise about a prison break.

Cristian: You're not going to get away with it.

Carlo: Huh.  Say I did find a way out of this fine establishment.  I'd be taking all your hope for freedom with me, and your poor, lost, lonely, nameless soul.  All of your so-called advocates have vanished into the ether.  Even your pretty attorney has abandoned you.

Todd: Can you get me out of here?

Evangeline: I'm sorry, Todd, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Todd: What am I paying you for, then?

Evangeline: You're going to be held here until after your arraignment.  And if you can't make bail, then I --

Todd: "If"?

Evangeline: You're charged with a double homicide.  This isn't your first arrest.

Todd: They can't use that other stuff, can they?

Evangeline: Prior bad acts are excluded at the trial, but in the arraignment, anything goes.  You changed your identity, you tried to run.  Even the most liberal judge is going to consider you a flight risk.  Now, we should concentrate on the battles we can win.

Todd: I can't stay in this place.  It could be months.

Evangeline: Well, you should've thought of that before you got caught with five grand and a fake beard.  I'm sorry.  You know I'm going to do everything I can.  But you need to call Blair.

Todd: No.

Evangeline: Todd, she needs to be sitting next to you in the courtroom, or you're going to look even more guilty.

Todd: I didn't kill Margaret.  Doesn't that count for anything?

Evangeline: Not if I can't prove reasonable doubt.  No, appearances matter, Todd.  Call Blair -- unless you think she's turned against you.

[Guests murmur]

Dorian: David -- ask him again.

Judge: If Mr. Vickers doesn't wish to proceed --

Dorian: I said ask him again.

Judge: All right.  Do you, David Bradley Vickers, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, to love and to cherish from this day forward, as long as you both shall live?

David: No.

[Guests react]

David: I can't marry you.

Carlo: Pity you dismissed my offer to become your mentor.

Cristian: You can't control me anymore.

Carlo: Would you like me to pass along a message to your beautiful wife when I see her?  Perhaps an embrace, even a kiss?  Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.  Still so easy to control.

Cristian: You want me to attack you, get thrown into solitary, and then I can't blow the whistle on your little escape.  I'm not taking the bait.

Carlo: So said the hungry little fish to the big fat, juicy worm.

Cristian: You can't buy everyone.

Carlo: You have no idea what I can do.  Decades of doing favors for people are going to pay off now.  Do you know how they came about?  Because of careful planning and self-control, and no little upstart like you is going to get in my way.

Cristian: There's got to be someone here who's not on Hesser's payroll.  Hey.

John: The situation's complicated.

Bo: Let's try to un-complicate it.  Now, the -- you've been working on a closed case.  I assume that this is that case?  You have any reason to believe that the man that we put away is innocent?

John: No.  He murdered Santi, but there's more to it than that.

Bo: Is there more than what you knew when the D.A. let him plead guilty?  This have anything to do with Natalie?

John: Bottom line, there's a hit out on the guy, Bo, and I'm trying to stop it.

Bo: Hmm.

John: I'm sorry, but that's all I can tell you right now.

Bo: Yeah, but, see, that's not going to fly.  Because if you use your position to -- to make an unauthorized action and that backfires, that's going to reflect on the entire department.

John: I'd never do anything to jeopardize the department.  Look, Bo, I've -- I've seen you bend rules.  You do what you have to do to help the people you care about.

Bo: Yes, yes, that's true.  And recently I knew that Jessica was sick, but I didn't tell Viki about that.  That was absolutely the wrong thing to do.  We can't make decisions on other people's lives, even if we think that it's the right thing to do.

John: Cochran case is under control.  I'm going to punch out.

Bo: And then do what?  Are you going to go out to Statesville?

John: I'm going to do what I have to do.

Bo: John, then, that means I have to warn you.  Now, if you screw up or if somebody that I really care about ends up getting hurt or if the department is just left hung out to dry, then I have to do what I have to do.

Natalie: Hey, is everything all right?

John: Yeah.  Look, there's something I got to do.  I'll see you later.

Bo: Natalie?  Could I see you in my office for a minute?

Dorian: David, why are you doing this?

David: We need to talk -- alone.

Dorian: Oh, I'm not going anywhere.  I'm exactly where I want to be.  I came here to marry you today, and that's what we're going to do.  Don't tell me you've changed your mind.

Blair: Is this a joke?

Kelly: I -- I don't know.  It's a nightmare.

Kevin: Can we go?

Kelly: No, we can't go.

Duke: Are you ok?

Adriana: Don't worry.  She'll manipulate David into marrying her.  There's no way she's going to let him humiliate her in front of the mainline society pages.

Jack: Wasn't he supposed to say "I do"?

Starr: Dad would've loved this.

Blair: You know what?  I've had all the drama I can handle for today.  I'm going to go find Todd.

Kelly: Blair --

Spencer: Do you need me to watch the kids or anything?

Blair: No, thank you, Spencer.

Dorian: I demand an explanation.

David: I'm just not ready to get married.

Dorian: I don't believe you.  Honey, for -- for more than a year you've been begging me to elope with you.  No.  I -- I don't believe you've changed your mind.  What happened?

David: Something -- someone changed my mind.

Dorian: Who?

David: Spencer.

Dorian: What's Spencer have to do with your wanting to marry me?

Spencer: David.  He's been blaming things on me since we were little.

Dorian: What does Spencer have to do with this?

David: Spencer represents another life, a road that I didn't take, and I -- I feel that I made a mistake.  Dorian, I've been riding your coattails and your name and your bank account for years.  I want Spencer's life.

Dorian: No, you don't.

David: Well, then that just goes to show how little you really know me.  I want what he's got and I don't think I'll be able to get that if I'm married to you.

Dorian: That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Judge: If you're not going through with the ceremony, I should be leaving.  I have another wedding to perform in a few hours.

Dorian: No, there is going to be a wedding.  You just stay right where you are.  David and I just need a few minutes to talk.

David: Dorian --

Dorian: Darling, you said you wanted to talk, didn't you?  So we'll talk, then we'll come back here and we'll get married. Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the delay, but it's a good thing everybody loves a cliffhanger, right?  So just give David and I a few minutes, ok?  And then we'll come right back here and we'll get married.  David?  Ah.  So, uh, mingle, talk among yourselves.  Hi.

Hugh: Can't remember the last time I prosecuted a case so simple.  It's practically gift-wrapped for the state.

Officer: Manning slipped through the cracks before, sir, and Margaret Cochran did try to kill his family.

Hugh: Yes, except she was seven months pregnant.  Nobody's going to give a baby-killer the benefit of the doubt.  No sirree.  I intend to do everything in my power to make sure Todd Manning gets the death penalty.

Blair: Oh, my God.

Natalie: So why'd you want to see me?

Bo: Well, yeah, it's a tough time for the family right now.  Jess is back and she's starting therapy.

Natalie: You know, I don't think any of it's really hit me yet.  I'm pretty freaked out about the whole thing.

Bo: Well, Viki's going to do everything she can to help your sister.

Natalie: I know.  But I just don't want mom to ever have to think about Niki Smith or D.I.D. ever again.  I mean, I know she's not showing it, but I know how scared she is.

Bo: She's already got enough on her plate, and now Todd's been arrested for murder.

Natalie: You haven't told her?

Bo: No, I don't want to tell her something like that over the phone.  And I'd -- I wish there was a way I could shield her from everything.

Natalie: Maybe we could just keep it from her for a few days.

Bo: No, I don't think that's a good idea because tomorrow the news is going to break about Todd.  So the phones at Llanfair, they're going to be ringing off the hook as soon as the newspapers hit the stands.

Natalie: Then we have to tell her.

Bo: I learned a lesson recently the hard way.  You cannot shield people that you really care about from bad news, even if you really believe that that's the right thing to do, because it always seems to backfire on you.  And then the repercussions -- they can hurt even worse than the bad news would have.

John: Yeah, it's John Mc Bain with the Llanview P.D.  I have urgent police business with the warden and I'm not being allowed past the gate.  At this point, I don't give a damn about your list, lady.  This is an urgent police matter regard-- no, I need to speak to the warden personally.  No, this is -- this is police business.  Get me somebody who is authorized to make a decision.  Do you -- this is an emergency, lady.

Todd: Blair believes in me.  I just don't want to scare her till we figure out what we're going to do about this thing.

Evangeline: You don't have that luxury, Todd.  I am so sick and tired of men thinking they can protect the women they love by keeping things from them.  Don't you realize it never works?

Todd: I just -- I put Blair through so much hell already --

Evangeline: The problem is the way you act, not who knows about it.  But maybe I'm crazy, because I always thought that when you love someone, you share your life with them -- all of it, not just the edited version -- but I guess I'm delusional.  No, I must be delusional because I don't know one man capable of that.

Todd: Are you still alone?

Evangeline: Look, I need you to construct a timeline.  Here.  I need you to write down everything that happened between you and Margaret Cochran from first contact up until her death.  Don't leave anything out.

Todd: I'm going to need more paper than that.

Evangeline: I don't want any surprises from the prosecution.  Guard?  And I will not tolerate lies.

Blair: Neither will I.

Evangeline: Hey, Blair.  Todd needs you.

Blair: Why'd you do it, Todd?  Why'd you run and leave me?

Dorian: How could you humiliate me in front of all of those people?  David, why are you doing this?  I mean, there are society columnists from newspapers for 500 miles around who came here to cover a wedding, not a train wreck.  But -- we can salvage this.  Sure, we can.  Everybody knows what a wacky sense of humor you have.  They know we'd never settle for an ordinary wedding. So we'll tell them that we planned it this way all along. Honey, it'll work.  We just have to sell it.  And then when I get you to our honeymoon suite tonight, so help me, we're going to have one hell of a fight because, mister, you nearly messed this up for both of us.

David: Dorian -- no.

Dorian: Or not.  Because I -- I understand where you're coming from.  I had my doubts, too, about going forward with this.  We've both made so many mistakes in the past.  But now that the time has come, when we're about to become husband and wife, I've never felt more certain about anything in my entire life.

Dorian: So as long as we're man and wife by the end of the evening, I say we forget the whole thing ever happened.  All right?

David: No.  It's not all right.  No spin is going to change any of this, and no matter how many times the judge asks me, I'm still going to say no.  I mean it.  I'm sorry.  I can't marry you.

Dorian: Why are you doing this?  What have I done to -- what --

David: Nothing.  Listen to me.  You've done nothing.  I swear.  It's because of something that I've done.

John: Hello?

Priest: Is there something I can do for you, son?

John: I was -- I was on my way home and I saw this place.  It reminds me of somewhere else.

Priest: You haven't been to church for some time, have you?

John: Years.

Priest: Why now?  Is there something on your mind?

Natalie: I can't blame john for what he did.  I -- I know he was only doing it to protect me.

Bo: Well, he was doing what he thought was right.

Natalie: He always does.

Bo: But we just can't protect people from bad news.  We just have to be there for them when the bad news breaks.

Natalie: Mm-hmm.  You know what, I'm definitely going to be there for mom when she finds out about Todd. I promise.  You know, it's not like he's my favorite uncle or anything.

Bo: No, because that position is already filled.

Natalie: That's right, permanently.

Bo: Ok.

Hugh: I hear it's official -- you took the Manning case.

Evangeline: That's right.  Looks like you get your wish.  We'll be going up against each other in court.

Hugh: I admire your guts.

Evangeline: That's arrogant.

Hugh: I'm talking about Manning.  I know your record -- very few scratches in the loss column.

Evangeline: I don't plan on losing this one, either.

Hugh: If I were you, I'd pass manning off to some public defender who needs the experience.  We've got him dead to rights.

Evangeline: If Todd Manning's case is so open-and-shut, then why are you so nervous about me defending him?

Todd: I didn't leave you.

Blair: You ran off, no word, no warning.

Todd: I left a note.

Blair: I didn't find a note.  And Bo was at the door before I even knew you were gone.

Todd: That's why I left.

Blair: In a rented car, full disguise, fake passport, money, and that surveillance tape.  Yeah, well, that was doctored, too, from "The Sun," right, to give you an alibi.  I know everything, Todd.  Well, you know what?  Not everything, because I still have one question.

Todd: Am I guilty?

Blair: I wasn't going to ask you that, Todd.

Todd: Does that mean you believe me?

Blair: I have to.  Because if I thought if you had it in you to do something that horrific, our life, all of our hopes and dreams would've been destroyed.

Todd: I'm telling you the truth.

Blair: Before all this happened, you looked me in the eye and you told me that you did not kill Margaret and the baby.  And I believed you, Todd, because -- because we were talking about our future, not covering up something from the past.  Now, am I a fool?

Todd: You're no fool.  I wasn't lying to you then, and I'm not lying to you now.

Blair: But you've told a lot of lies since then, Todd.  The night that Margaret was murdered, you got a phone call, right, and you told me it was from the police.  But it was from her, wasn't it?

Todd: Yeah, she -- she wanted me to meet her, and she threatened to kill the kids if I didn't.

Blair: Promise me that you will tell me the truth from here on out, Todd, the whole truth?

Todd: I swear.

Blair: Because you don't have anything to lose.

Todd: Except you and the kids.  Yes, I know where we stand.  If I tell you another lie, we're finished.  That's clear.

Blair: So you arranged to meet her, right?

Todd: Yeah.  At Llantano lake.

Blair: Why didn't you just tell the police?  I mean, they would've -- they would've arrested her, Todd.

Todd: I didn't want her arrested, Blair.  I wanted her dead.

Hugh: I'm just trying to save you time and energy.

Evangeline: I appreciate your concern, I do, but I don't take hopeless cases.

Hugh: We've got means, motive, opportunity, not to mention D.N.A. and a witness who can place Manning at the scene of the crime with the murder victim the night she was killed.  The only thing missing is a confession.

Evangeline: Don't expect one this time.

Natalie: You're defending Todd?  Good, because that'll mean my mom will feel a lot better knowing he's getting the best defense.  Does this mean that you're dropping the John Doe case?

John: I, uh -- I don't really know why I'm here.

Priest: Stay a while.  You just might find the answer.

Boy's voice: Dad?  What are you praying for?

Man: Life.  A cop is always one prayer away from the bone orchard, Johnny boy.

John: Are you going to die?

Man: Oh, I hope not.  The job isn't easy.  Sometimes I need help.

John: From God?

Man: Anywhere I can get it.  I always find I -- I get what I need right here.

John: I don't understand.

Man: You will.  You will.

Cristian: What's a maniac like you doing out of his cell?

Hayes: Maniac?  I'm a model prisoner.  Besides, I have valuable skills to offer.

Cristian: What skills?

Hayes: You know, I'm still a literary agent of sorts.

Cristian: Do you work with Carlo Hesser?

Hayes: He taught me everything I know.

Cristian: Ok, now, I want to know everything Hesser's ever said to anyone, who he talks to, and who's been getting those little notes of his.

Hayes: Why would I tell you anything?  The last time we met, you beat me within an inch of my life.

Cristian: Start talking, or next time you won't get that inch.

Hayes: Oh -- that's good, that's good.  All right, let me get this straight.  You're threatening to kill me if I don't rat out Carlo?

Cristian: It's not a threat.  It's a promise.  Now, what's Hesser's plan?

Evangeline: No, Natalie, I'm working the John Doe case as actively as ever.

Natalie: Isn't there some law against defending someone who doesn't want to be defended?

Evangeline: You don't know the whole story.

Natalie: Fine.  Fine.  Knock yourself out, because that creep's never going to see the light of day no matter how hard you work that case.

Evangeline: You know what?  You don't want to believe this, but I'm not your enemy.  If anything, I'm --

Natalie: What, you're my friend?

Evangeline: I wouldn't go that far.

Natalie: I don't -- I don't get it.  You keep acting like you're doing me some sort of favor here by defending a killer who stole my husband's identity.  Now, what possibly could come out of this that would be good for me?

Priest: Mind if I ask what brings you here today?

John: I don't know for sure.  The old man -- well, when he had questions, he'd come to, you know, a place like this.  In the end, it didn't really help him, though, did it?

Priest: Are you certain of that?

John: He prayed for life and he got killed anyway.

Priest: Pardon me for saying this, but that's a very literal take on the power of prayer.  What do you think your father would say to that?

John: I don't know.  I never got the chance to ask him.  I shouldn't have come here.

Priest: What's the question?

John: What?

Priest: You said you're looking for answers.  What's the question?

John: I don't know.  There are no right answers.  With all due respect, father, no one can help me now.

Priest: Maybe you weren't willing to let them.  What's your dilemma, son?

John: It's -- there's someone that I care about.  I care about her very much . I kept something from her that she deserved to know, and the truth's going to come out.  When it does, she'll think I didn't care about her at all.

Priest: You love this woman very much?

John: That's not a word I ever really used, father.

Priest: Some things don't need words.

John: I'm not sure I'm capable of that anymore.

Priest: Now, that's not your problem, son.  You have more love in your heart than you can bear.  If you're questioning what to do about this woman you care for, the answer is simple.  Do what's best for her.  You know what that is?

John: Yeah, I do.

Dorian: Have you been unfaithful?

David: Yes.

Dorian: I don't believe you.  You love me too much to ever cheat on me.  Why, it was only this morning that you said you couldn't wait to make me your wife, that you didn't care if I wore a burlap sack.

David: It's a little more complicated than that.

Dorian: No, it isn't.  You promised me a perfect wedding day and a perfect rest of our lives together.  David, please.  Please, no matt-- when you said those thing to me, you were looking me straight in the eyes.  Yeah, and you can't do that right now.  Baby, I've always been able to tell when you were lying to me.

David: Not always.

Dorian: You listen to me.  You know that we were meant for each other, and nothing, nothing you could ever say will make me believe that you have changed your mind.

David: Let it go.  Let me go.  In the long run, you will have done yourself a very big favor.

Dorian: None of this is making any sense, so I am just going to have to assume that you are having the worst case of cold feet ever, in the history of the world, ok?  Now, I am going to give you -- hmm -- five minutes to pull yourself together, ok?  Just five minutes, and then I expect you to come downstairs and marry me.  Ok?  So I'll chat with our guests or do something else. You just pull yourself together, all right?  I will give you five minutes.  If you don't come downstairs and marry me, well, then you can just forget all about us.  Do you understand?  Five minutes, David.

Natalie: So how is defending John Doe supposed to be so good for me?

Evangeline: When justice is served, it's good for everyone.

Natalie: Maybe you should have that embroidered on a pillow.  Hey.

John: Hey.

Natalie: Are you all right?

John: Yeah, I'm fine.  You?

Natalie: Yeah, yeah.  I'm -- I'm going to go be with my mom.

John: Ok.

Natalie: So I'll call you later.

John: All right.

Natalie: All right?

Evangeline: Hey.

John: Hi.

Evangeline: I -- I've been trying to get through to Cristian at Statesville and I keep hitting one brick wall after another.

John: I'm on it, ok?  Trust me on this.

Evangeline: Ok.

John: Excuse me.

John: The information you're looking for isn't in there.

Bo: Why is that?

John: Because the John Doe claiming to be Cristian Vega is Cristian Vega.  I need your help, Bo.

Cristian: I got nothing to lose, Barber.  If I end up dead, I'm taking you with me.  Now, are you going to give me what I want?

Hayes: Oh, all right.  I'll tell you all about Carlo's plan.

Blair: You knew Margaret was pregnant?

Todd: Yeah.  And I didn't want you to know.

Blair: Todd, if the cops brought her in alive, the whole world would know.  That baby --

Todd: That night, I took a gun and I went to kill her, but --

Officer: Time's up.

Blair: No -- I just want to -- just a few more minutes, please.

Officer: No, I've given you too much already.

Todd: No, come on, wait just a little more.

Officer: Let's go.

Dorian: Thanks.

Kelly: Dorian -- what's going on?  Where's David?

Dorian: Judge, it appears as if there isn't going to be a wedding tonight, after all.  So, you can go.  Thank you.  Thank you very much.

Judge: Thank you.  I'm sorry.

Kelly: Let's go home, ok?  I'll take you home.

Dorian: No, no, no, no, no.  I'm fine, I'm fine.  You go ahead.  Ladies and gentlemen, I am so sorry.  Um -- I know you came here for a wedding, but may I offer you a wedding supper?  Yes, right down the hall on your left, there's a lovely dinner all set up for you.  I mean, who needs the bride and groom to enjoy a wedding supper?  Please, enjoy yourselves.  Thank you very much for coming.  Good night.  Good night.  Really, good night.

Man: Ok.

Dorian: Have a lovely evening.  Thank you.

Kevin: Come on, come on.

Kelly: I love you.

David: Get out.

Spencer: Just came by to offer my support.

David: You just forced me to do the worst thing I've ever done in my life.

Spencer: Don't be so melodramatic.  You and I both know that jilting Dorian at the altar was not the worst thing you've ever done in your life.

David: I'm never going to forgive you, Spencer, and I'm never going to forgive myself.  I swear on our mother's grave, I'm going to get you.

Spencer: It had to be done, Dave.  Dorian was becoming a liability.

David: Dorian is the woman that I love.  How can leaving her at the altar in front of the people that she cares about be the right thing to do?

Spencer: Well, consider the alternative.  I mean, in the long run, leaving Dorian at the altar, or letting her and the authorities know that you are a cold-blooded murderer?

Dorian: I am Dorian Lord, and it isn't over until I say it's over.

>> On the next "One Life to Live" --

Kelly: What are you still doing here?

Viki: Oh, my God, Dorian, what happened?

Bo: You may have lost your girlfriend and your job all in the same night.

Carlo: You interfere with any of my plans, you won't live past tomorrow night.
