Previously on "Guiding Light"...

Phillip: Is Rick Bauer here?!

Priest: If there is anyone here who objects to this marriage...

Mallet: The last call received was from Alan.

Phillip: There's been an accident.

Beth: What did you do?

Mallet: Oh, my God!

Phillip: It doesn't even hurt anymore.

Alan: What's that?

Phillip: Where you shot me! I guess you're wondering why I came back?

Rick: He's in shock. Start a 60-line with a unit of "O" negative.

Buzz: Coop! Rick!

Rick: Richard, please get him outside. Please. I need at least six more units. Richard, start the central line. I need pressure. Pressure is still dropping.

Dinah: Hey.

Shayne: Hey.

Dinah: You okay? What's going on? Why are you acting so weird? What's that?

Josh: Frank?

Reva: What's going on?

Frank: Coop was in an accident.

Reva: Oh, God. Is he going to be okay?

Frank: We don't know.

Buzz: How bad...

Rick: I don't know. I mean, he hasn't developed any cardiac problems, Buzz...

Buzz: He's going to make it.

Rick: But we're not going to know the full extent...

Buzz: Is he gonna make it?!

Rick: We're doing everything we can. It's a good team.

Buzz: Can I...

Rick: Yes, of course.

Buzz: Coop, I'm here. Your brother's right outside. Fight! You fight!

Beth: How is he?

Coop: Pop? Pop? Where am I?

Buzz: The hospital.

Coop: Beth...

Beth: I'm here. I'm right here.

Coop: Did you marry Alan? Good.

Phillip: Gus buried here?

Alan: No. No, he's not.

Phillip: I'm sorry he's gone. He was a good guy. You know, there were times over the last few years where I felt like I really was dead, like the world had just moved on without me. That's a really terrifying feeling. And there were times where I almost wished I hadn't survived that gunshot, where the pain of everything that had happened to me was just unbearable. And the future seemed so uncertain. But you know, I couldn't stop...

Alan: Couldn't stop what?

Phillip: Thinking about my life here, about all of the people that I had left behind. My family, my children, all the unfinished business; all the things that I have left to do.

Alan: What's that? Why don't you put the gun down, son?

Phillip: Yeah, you never want to play with a loaded gun. That's one of the first things you taught me, isn't it? Because, you know, there's always that chance. Always.

Alan: The day I shot you, I will regret for the rest of my life, Phillip, but you gave me no choice.

Phillip: No choice?

Alan: I did it to save you. Please, give me a chance.

Phillip: Well, we have a lot to catch up on, don't we?

Alan: Yeah.

Phillip: Let's see... you were about to marry Beth?

Alan: Yes, I was. Son, I tried to take care of Beth and her children since you've been gone. They're family to me now, just like you are.

Phillip: Does she love you?

Alan: Not the way she loves you, son. If you had stayed... if you were still here...

Phillip: If you hadn't shot me! I'll never know why you did it. But you are right-- the road I was going down would have been the end of me, one way or the other, so you did save me from myself. I can't say that bullet didn't hurt like hell. But you know what? Hell is probably where I would be right now without it.

Alan: So you didn't come back to kill me?

Phillip: No. I have other things to do.

Buzz: Hey. Do you remember what happened?

Coop: I wrecked the car.

Buzz: There's going to be a large payback.

Coop: You got it.

Beth: Are you in a lot of pain?

Coop: Not anymore. We did it-- she didn't marry Alan.

Buzz: Yeah, we did it. You rest. I'm going to go tell Rick you're awake.

Coop: Dad?

Buzz: Yeah?

Coop: Another minute?

Buzz: Oh, yeah.

Coop: Hey, hey, hey. I'm fine, just fine.

Beth: You're crazy, you know that? You're crazy. What were you going to do, run down the aisle and punch Alan?

Coop: Perhaps. I couldn't let you do it. It wasn't right.

Beth: No, it wasn’t.

Coop: You didn't want to marry him, Beth. I had to... had to...

Beth: I know. I know. I know.

Coop: I can't let you go. I still can’t.

Beth: You don't have to. You just need to get well, okay? Please, Coop, please, please get well.

Rick: Beth, he needs some rest, okay?

Beth: I'll be back.

Coop: Don't go. Beth, don't go.

Beth: You need to rest. I won't leave you again, I promise.

Reva: Buzz, how's Coop?

Buzz: Um... the doctors say they're doing what they can. What kind of answer is that, you know? He was in a car accident, so, you know, people get in car accidents, people recover, so will he.

Josh: Frank said there was ice on the road. Is that what happened?

Buzz: He was trying to stop the wedding, Alan and Beth’s.

Reva: Did Alan know?

Buzz: I'm not sure.

Josh: Anything we can do?

Buzz: No. Um... I've got to call my family and tell them, you know. Have you seen Frank?

Reva: Yeah, actually, he was just here a minute ago.

Shayne: Edmund is going to be here in a little bit. Are you going to wait around for him?

Dinah: What did you buy for Lara?

Shayne: A ring. A ring that I got at a flea market over there.

Dinah: A ring? You were going to ask her to marry you?

Shayne: Yeah... well, maybe Edmund will want it. It's just a ring, right?

Dinah: No. No, I can't even believe you would consider giving him something like this. It's yours... it's yours and Lara’s, and he was never a part of that story.

Shayne: He was her father.

Dinah: Yeah, and thank goodness she never learned the truth about him.

Shayne: Yeah. Okay. Edmund has done a lot of bad stuff, but he told her...

Dinah: "Bad stuff?" He left me in a fire to burn. The man has no conscience. If he finds out that you're responsible for Lara’s death, no matter how much of an accident it is...

Shayne: He's not going to find out. We've already talked about this. He won’t...

Dinah: ... You will be an accident, too! You don't know what you're getting yourself into. You don’t. I've been on the receiving end of this man's charm. He makes you feel like you're different and you're special and that he's changed, but the truth is-- and I promise you-- he has not.

Shayne: I need you to leave now.

Edmund: Hello, Dinah. How are you? Some people never change.

Dinah: Shayne's in trouble. He needs you.

Josh: Trouble? What do you mean? What kind of trouble?

Dinah: Today was Lara’s birthday. He's at his apartment right now staring at the gift he was going to give her. A ring.

Reva: And you left him alone?

Dinah: He threw me out when Edmund got there.

Josh: He's getting closer and closer to Edmund every day.

Reva: Not if I can stop him. Oh!

Dinah: I needed some backup on this one. Look, I know that Shayne knows Edmund, but he's never experienced his scary side firsthand. We can get rid of Edmund, but we have to stop playing nice.

Edmund: To my daughter, on her birthday.

Shayne: To Lara.

Edmund: To Lara. Let's celebrate this day every year to keep Lara alive, if only in our memories. You know, I think... I think she's here with us right now. (Cell phone ringing)

Shayne: Hey, Mom, what's going on? I'm kind of busy right now.

Reva: I got out of a chemo session, and when I was at the hospital, I ran into Buzz Cooper. Do you remember Coop, his son? He was in a horrible accident. And there is a chance that he may not make it, and it made me think about you, and it made me want to see you and make sure that you're okay.

Shayne: I'm fine.

Reva: I'd like to see you.

Shayne: No problem; I'm on my way. I... I have to go. Thank you for the drink.

Frank: Hey, Pop, here.

Buzz: Where have you been?

Frank: I had to check in at the station. Any changes?

Buzz: He's awake. He's in pain. And they're taking him into surgery.

Frank: Surgery? To do what?

Buzz: I don't know, they won't tell me. It's serious. What did Mallet and Marina find?

Frank: At the crash site?

Buzz: Yes, at the crash... site! What about the brakes?

Frank: The brakes are fine.

Buzz: The engine, the tires?

Frank: Are you asking me if Alan tampered with the car, or if he was responsible for the crash?

Buzz: Tell me something. Tell me, because then I'll know what to do.

Frank: As far as we can tell right now, unfortunately, Coop skidded on the ice. There's no foul play.

Buzz: Frank, there's got to be something. What is it you're not telling me?

Frank: Dad, we need to stay focused and be here for Coop.

Buzz: What is it you're not telling me?

Frank: Alan called Coop right around the time of the crash.

Buzz: He called him before his own wedding? Why would he do that?

Beth: I told you to stay away from me!

Alan: I just wanted to come by and make sure that you're okay, Beth, that's all. I... I know it's been very traumatic for you. How... how is your friend?

Beth: He's critical.

Alan: I'm sorry to hear about that. I want you to know our minister is praying for him.

Beth: What... what minister?!

Alan: Our minister in the car there. I... I brought him. I thought that maybe we could go to the chapel and finish our wedding ceremony.

Beth: We are finished! Because of you... you did this!

Alan: Beth!

Beth: It's always you!

Phillip: Hey.

Rick: Hey.

Phillip: How's Coop?

Rick: He's headed in for surgery. Don’t... don't go in, not now.

Phillip: Okay. What about you?

Rick: I saw you walk into the church, and it was like, oh, this is the best friend I grew up with in high school. And then, I remember the other guy, too, the one that kidnapped my kid. So, which guy came back here?

Phillip: And why?

Rick: Yeah, why? Is it... is it because I sent Bill after you? Or is it because of Beth and Alan? I mean, why... why are you back here?

Phillip: Beth loves my father?

Bill: No. I think Beth’s in love with Coop.

Phillip: That explains a few things. Man, there's a lot I don't know, isn't there? A lot you left out. You and Beth?

Rick: Yeah. Alan was married to Beth, and as you know, things in my marriage with Mel were falling apart. And it just... it just started as an affair. And... I loved her. You know that from... I've always loved her.

Phillip: I know.

Rick: But what I came to realize is that it wasn't high school anymore, and that was just a big fantasy and things just fell apart. And it was a disaster. I'm really sorry. I know. I know, it's a lot to process.

Phillip: Man, I'll tell you... you know? I spent a lot of time the last few years by myself, trying to figure out who the hell I am. Figure out how to control what I became. I imagined walking back into all kinds of scenarios, but I can tell you, I never, never dreamed up this.

Rick: Well, you know what they say? Blue skies and palomino ponies.

Phillip: It's good to see you.

Rick: It's really good to see you. So, what's the plan?

Phillip: I want to see my kids.

Rick: Oh. They're not going to let you anywhere near their kids.

Phillip: Yeah, they will.

Rick: No.

Phillip: It'll take some time, but I'll get through to them.

Rick: Phillip, you don’t... you don’t... I need to get back inside, and you need to leave before they see you. You're not going anywhere, are you?

Phillip: (Chuckles)

Rick: Same old Phillip.

Alan: Beth! Beth! Beth!

Beth: Let go! Let go of me!

Alan: I know you're upset about Coop right now, but I am not to blame for this.

Beth: He got into that car because of you!

Alan: No! He got into that car to try and break up our wedding. I am not to blame for that, and neither are you.

Beth: Me? Me!

Alan: Listen. Listen to me. You made a terrible judgment and error by getting involved with that young man, but you have set forth steps to correct it by agreeing to break up with him and to marry me. You've done your part, Beth. You don't need to feel guilty about this.

Beth: You're hurting me!

Alan: I'm sorry. I... I don't want to hurt you, Beth. You know how much I love you.

Beth: Love?! Forcing someone to marry you!

Alan: I know what is best for you. I think it's very clear how reckless that young man was.

Beth: Don’t... don't you dare say "was." Don't you dare.

Alan: Beth, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, it was a slip of the tongue. But he's not the love of your life. He's nothing more than a toy...

Beth: Get the hell out of here, Alan!

Alan: Why don't we go somewhere...

Beth: Now!

Alan:... And talk this through...

Beth: There is nothing to talk about. I don't love you! I will never let you touch me again! I don't care what you do to me!

Alan: I'll give you some time to re-think that.

Shayne: Hi, hi, hi.

Reva: Hi.

Shayne: And I thought you were going to be alone.

Reva: Yeah... I, um, bumped into your daddy at the hospital.

Shayne: Oh.

Josh: Yeah. I was there signing some paperwork, you know, concerning the new wing, and that's when we found out about Coop.

Reva: It made us realize how lucky we are.

Shayne: We are very lucky, you're right. We could have also discussed that on the phone, couldn't we?

Reva: Oh, just come here.

Shayne: Mom.

Reva: Give me a hug.

Josh: This kind of thing happens, son, it makes you want to grab a hold of your kids and never let go.

Reva: Yes. And when they need you as much as you need them, then it's all the more important that you be together.

Shayne: Dinah told you it's Lara’s birthday, didn't she?

Josh: Yeah.

Shayne: Yeah.

Josh: You want to tell us about the ring?

Shayne: No! No. Actually, I don't want to talk about that. See you guys later, okay?

Reva: I ordered a cake. It has chocolate icing. That's your favorite.

Shayne: Mom...

Josh: One slice.

Dinah: Glass of merlot, please. Thank you.

Edmund: Still not speaking to me?

Dinah: I thought you were out working with Shayne today.

Edmund: He went to see Reva.

Dinah: I'm sorry about your daughter. This must be a very tough day for you. You know how it's going to end for us, don't you?

Edmund: Us?

Dinah: With the Lewis’s. We're not exactly their vintage.

Edmund: Shayne and I are working together in Lara’s memory. This means something to both of us.

Dinah: Of course it does. That guy over there is watching you.

Edmund: Following me is more like it. Rock Hoover. Mr. Hoover, come over here, please.

Hoover: It's been a while, Mr. Winslow.

Dinah: You two know each other?

Edmund: Well, not in the biblical sense, but he's an old associate of Jeffrey O’Neill’s, so I suppose he's no friend of mine.

Dinah: And you've been following him?

Hoover: Yes, ma'am.

Dinah: Well, Jeffrey was the one most on your side, and he's having a very big, large man follow you... no offense.

Hoover: None taken.

Dinah: What does that say?

Coop: Hey, Rick, just a minute, please.

Rick: Yeah. Sure. I'm going to get the team ready, and we'll be right back.

Coop: Okay.

Buzz: Hey, kiddo. Hey.

Frank: They've got some cute nurses working on you, man.

Coop: Excellent. Sorry about the car, Dad.

Buzz: That's okay. I'll make you work it off.

Frank: And don't be asking to borrow my car, all right?

Coop: Your car? No, thanks. (Coughing)

Buzz: Son, did Alan call you?

Coop: Yes.

Frank: About Beth?

Coop: Yes. I didn't get to the wedding, Dad. But I stopped it.

Frank: Yeah, you sure did, bro.

Coop: The guy in the red sweatshirt-- he pulled me out of the car. He saved my life. I need to thank him.

Rick: Everybody's ready. The team's ready.

Coop: You know I love you both.

Buzz: I love you so much, my son.

Coop: Tell lucky that I love him, too.

Buzz: Look, you tell him... tomorrow.

Frank: Hey, Coop, don't be worrying about anything, okay? Where you going?

Buzz: Um... for a walk.

Dinah: I understand what you're going through. When I found Shayne in Germany, he couldn't walk. He didn't want to talk or, you know, even want to live. I helped him get his life back. For a minute, I actually thought there might be something between us.

Edmund: Between you and Shayne?

Dinah: Uh-huh. But then what I learned was that his family will never accept me.

Edmund: Your brother is a Lewis. Doesn't that help?

Dinah: No. No, they'll never trust me. They have long memories. And they're a tight family, and Shayne is their golden boy. They don't let people like me into their circle, or people like you, either.

Edmund: Shayne's his own man, and he loved my daughter.

Dinah: Mm, no, the Lewis’s-- Reva, Josh, Jeffrey-- they have his ear, and you know it. That's why you didn't tell them that Lara was pregnant when you first came back.

Edmund: You begged me not to.

Dinah: No. You know it's more than that. You don't trust the Lewis’s, with good reason. When it comes to you and me, they have their limits.

Reva: Where are my manners?

Shayne: I've got to say, I'll be glad when you have that baby to pay attention to instead of me.

Reva: Remember you said that.

Josh: Hey, at least nobody came out singing "Happy Birthday."

Reva: Did Lara like chocolate?

Shayne: Lara liked honesty. That's what Lara liked. You tricked me here to get me here today.

Josh: Would you have come if we had been honest with you?

Shayne: No.

Reva: Well, the rest of this isn't a lie. What's real is that we care about you. It's real that I need you more now than ever. And it's real that your little baby Godson, your little brother, is going to need you, too. (Cell phone rings)

Shayne: Hello?

Edmund: Shayne, it's Edmund. Look, there are a number of Embassy high rollers coming into town, the kind of people who could give a lot of money to Lara’s memorial. I think we should make some appointments.

Shayne: Yes, absolutely. That sounds great. But I'm in the... I'm in the middle of a doctor's appointment right now. Can I call you back?

Edmund: Later, of course. Sure.

Frank: Hey, Beth.

Beth: Hey, um...

Frank: Are you okay?

Beth: Yeah, yeah, I... how's Coop?

Frank: He just went into surgery.

Beth: I wanted to talk to him before the... there were so much that I didn't get a chance to say to him.

Frank: Hey, Beth, you know, you can talk to him when he comes out.

Beth: You're right. You're right. I'm... I'll just, um... I'll talk to him later.

Frank: Just so you know, he was in good spirits. He was making some wisecracks.

Beth: Oh, that's good. I think that's a good... that's a good sign. He'll be fine. I know... I know that he will be fine. Where's Buzz?

Frank: He went for a walk. I think he just needed to clear his head.

Shayne: So, um... so her last birthday, last year, um... well, we didn't get to celebrate much over there, but I got everybody out of one of the tents. And I got a bunch of balloons from the marine base, and I filled the tent up. I mean, stuffed with balloons. And... I'm sorry-- I just want to say that now-- I took the chocolate cookies you sent me and I traded them for a chocolate cake.

Reva: It's okay.

Shayne: Okay. Okay. So I had the chocolate cake, and I laid out this entire feast. Anything that you could imagine was in there. So, the sun is going down just as the moon is coming up. I grabbed Lara’s hand-- and it's been a surprise all day long, nobody told her. I take her to the tent, and you want to talk about being surprised. Two or three foxes had gotten under the tent wall and were devouring everything. Everything was a disaster.

Reva: Oh, that's awful.

Shayne: She just looked at me and laughed.

Beth: Rick! Rick, is... is Coop out of surgery yet?

Rick: No, not yet. There's been a lot of damage.

Beth: But it looks good, right?

Rick: I think right now we just have to hope.

Beth: He's going to be okay, right?

Rick: We have to keep him in our prayers, okay? You need to go home and change. This is likely to take a while. And you're not going to do him any good by being exhausted.

Beth: I saw Phillip again.

Rick: I did, too. Did he say anything about us?

Beth: He didn't say anything. I couldn’t... I couldn't talk to him yet. You know, I just... I just couldn’t.

Alan: What are you doing here? How did you get through the gate, Buzz?

Buzz: It's your fault!

Alan: What's my fault?

Buzz: My son's in the hospital.

Alan: Your son is in the hospital because he was in an accident, Buzz, that's all!

Buzz: You taunted him! Now I'm going to...

Phillip: Leave my father alone!

Next on "Guiding Light,"

Alan: Phillip should have left him in there and driven by.

Phillip: Just... just stop!

Buzz: What are you doing here?! Are you part of this?
