(alarm bell ringing) (phillip breathing heavily) (bell rings)
marah: Let me take that.
Marina: No, i'm okay. I'm fine.
Marah: You're wiped out. Have a seat.
Marina: No, i really feel like i should be in there with him.
Marah: Sit. Shayne is a lucky guy to have you in his life.
Marina: I haven't done anything for him.
Marah: Except make him happy.
Marina: Look, if anyone is lucky here, it's me. Shayne...
Marah: Yeah. So have you done anything about school yet?
Marina: What do you mean?
Marah: Have you talked to your professors?
Marina: No, i'm going to worry about classes when shayne's better.
Marah: Okay.
Marina: Look, marah, shayne has done more for me than any college course ever could. He helped me through one of the worst times in my life and the least that i can do is help him through one of his.
Marah: Yeah, well, it may take a while.
Marina: Yeah, well, i have time.
Josh: I guess i'm not... I guess I'm not used to being the one who does all the talking, you know, especially when there's a teenager in the room. (Laughs weakly) I honestly don't know what you're thinking right now, son. But I think I have a pretty good guess. That you wouldn't be lying here right now in this bed if i had just... If i had just waited a few more minutes for you to show up at that meeting. If i had trusted you and been a little more patient. But I wasn't. And here you are. I did guess what you're thinking, didn't i? Shayne. Shayne, we're both going to have to deal with this for the rest of our lives, but it's going to get better, I promise you. It's not going to be easy for you. You're going to have to work hard, but I'm going to be here with you, son, every day, until we get you back on your feet again. You're a fighter, shayne. You've always been a fighter, and I am, too. And we're going to go after this thing together with everything we've got, and one day you're going to walk again, and then you're going to run, and then you're going to be walking out to that mound again one day with a base... Baseball. Oh. I'm sorry, i didn'T... I didn't mean that i expect...
reva: You told him?
Josh: Yes. By the time I finished, he wouldn't even look at me. But then again, neither will you, so... You know, maybe you should think about going home and getting some sleep.
Reva: I'm not going home. I'm not tired, but if you want to go, you go.
Josh: Not yet.
Marah: Hey, stay away from that water fountain. We brought soup.
Reva: I don't want any, thanks.
Marah: Well, we've got chili and cornbread, too.
Reva: I'm not hungry.
Marina: Is he awake?
Josh: Yes, he is.
Marina: Okay, thanks.
Marah: You can't just not eat.
Reva: Marah, I already answered you twice. I don't want any food. But your father can speak for himself.
Marah: Okay. Maybe I will just go see shayne.
Josh: I'm sure he'll want to see you.
Marina: Ta-da. I don't know, I thought you'd like to listen to, like, cds or the radio or whatever.
Marah: The baseball playoffs. Or "sandy and the mole." Dad was in here? So he told you about the accident?
Marina: Yeah, did he tell you it's all his... Sorry.
Marah: Shayne? Shayne, open your eyes. It is dad's fault, and you can blame him, but you can't be mad at him, not forever. Because he didn't mean to hurt you. Right?
Marina: Right.
Marah: Sometimes things just happen. People make mistakes, bad ones. People hurt each other. But that doesn't mean that they don't love each other.
Phillip: What the hell is wrong with this place?
Olivia: What happened?
Phillip: I got stuck in the elevator between floors!
Olivia: It couldn't have been that long, i just came up in that car.
Phillip: They ought to take the damn thing out of service. This is unbelievable.
Olivia: I'm sure if there's a problem, they'll look into it.
Phillip: If? What, you don't believe me?
Olivia: I believe there's a problem. Look, I think you should have a doctor look at you.
Phillip: No, I don't need a doctor to look at me. I'm fine.
Olivia: You're the color of chalk and you're dripping wet.
Phillip: It was hot in there! And I'M... I'm getting over a cold. I'm fine. I'm fine. (Exhales) I'm fine. I just need to sit down for a minute.
Olivia: Why are you being so stubborn? Why don't you just let somebody look at you, okay?
Phillip: No.
Olivia: I bet you rick or ed is on duty. I'll go ask a nurse.
Phillip: No! Just sit with me for a minute, okay? Just sit with me.
Olivia: What exactly happened in there?
Phillip: I don't know what happened. I walked in the elevator; i pressed the button and the car stopped. I don't know. Maybe it didn't move. I don't know, I don't remember. My chest...
Olivia: Like you couldn't breathe?
Phillip: It started getting tight, yeah. And I... My eyes. The walls, it was like they were moving.
Olivia: Have you ever had an attack of claustrophobia before?
Phillip: No. You're thinking of the other spaulding. Alan has claustrophobia, not me.
Olivia: So this wasn't a fear of enclosed spaces?
Phillip: No. I'm in elevators every single day of my life.
Olivia: So what was this? Was this just a panic attack?
Phillip: I don't know. No, it was not a panic attack. (Scoffs)
panic attack. I don't know what it was.
Olivia: Were you thinking of anything in particular when you stepped in there?
Phillip: No. I was thinking about rick and mel. They're having a baby.
Olivia: What?
Phillip: Yeah, they just found out they're having a baby.
Olivia: That's really great.
Phillip: I know it is and i couldn't be happier for them.
Olivia: Were you thinking of anything else?
Phillip: No. I mean, I was thinking about kids. I was thinking about having kids and obviously what a responsibility that is. I was thinking about josh, what he must be going through with shayne in such bad shape right now.
Olivia: Did it make you worry about what might happen to your own kids?
Phillip: I don't have to worry about what might happen to them; what has happened to them. I think about lizzie getting leukemia, zach getting hit by the car. Sometimes I think this world is one big death trap.
Olivia: No, phillip, no.
Phillip: Both of them-- both of them-- came this close to dying, and... And what did i do? I'd done it. Nothing. Nothing. I did nothing. I paced the halls. I was completely useless. I'm their father. It's my job...
Olivia: I know, it's your job to take care of everything.
Phillip: Right.
Olivia: And then you have another child on the way.
Phillip: I can'T...
Olivia: No, don't.
Phillip: I can'T...
Olivia: Okay.
Phillip: I can't fail them anymore.
Olivia: All right.
Phillip: Do you understand me?
Olivia: Yeah.
Phillip: I can'T.
Olivia: Yeah.
Phillip: Not again. I can'T. I can't fail any of them anymore.
Olivia: Okay.
Phillip: And I won'T.
Olivia: You're hurting me.
Phillip: I'm sorry.
Olivia: Okay.
Phillip: I'm sorry.
Olivia: It's okay, it's okay. It's okay. Come with me.
Phillip: Where?
Olivia: I don't know. We're going to get out of here. And we're going to take the stairs. Come on. Come on.
marina: I'm going to preset the college station for you. What is it? 96.3?
Tony: How you dong?
Marah: Better now that you're here.
Tony: Well, your sister's got all the lines, huh? Hm? It wasn't that funny.
Marina: No, i just... I think he likes seeing the two of you together. Isn't that right?
Tony: Well, you know, shayne, there's no other place i'd be right now than here. Marah knows how much i care about her family. We're all pulling for the same thing, for you to get better. Well, I'm going to take off. I just wanted to check up how you were doing. See you later.
Marina: You know, he's right about everybody pulling for you. You would not believe the stack of letters that are down at the nurse's station. Most of them are from complete strangers, but they obviously feel like they know you. You know, you mean a lot to a lot of people. I can relate.
Ian: Shayne? Hi. I'm ian spector, your physical therapist. Time for your first session.
Marina: Now? At night?
Ian: It'll guarantee he sleeps well. You family?
Marina: I'm his girlfriend, marina cooper. Is there any way i can stay for this?
Ian: If it's okay with shayne. Yeah, I don't blame you. So, are you ready to dig in? Hm? Get your brain and your body back in sync?
Marina: You bet he is. Let's do it.
Josh: Reva, wait.
Reva: Why are you following me around? I'm sorry.
Josh: Reva, you're tired.
Reva: Yeah.
Josh: Let me take you home.
Reva: I don't want to go home.
Josh: You're not going to be any good to shayne if you're exhausted. Just wait here, let me get the car.
Reva: I'm not an invalid, joshua.
Josh: I know that, reva. I'm just... I'm trying to make things easier for you.
Reva: I know.
Josh: Let me take you home. And if you want, i'll stay there with you for a while.
Reva: No, thanks.
Josh: Or not. I could just drop you off.
Reva: You don't have to drive me home. I can make it on my own.
Josh: It's a ten minute ride, reva.
Reva: I realize that.
Josh: Ten minutes is too long for you to be in the car with me alone? Fine. Whatever. Take a taxi or a bus. Walk.
Reva: I'll borrow marah's car.
Josh: Good, great, I'm glad that's settled.
Reva: I know you're hurting.
Josh: Yeah, well, part of the reason i'm hurting is because of you.
Reva: Oh, and why is that? Because I'm not being the understanding, supportive wife at the moment?
Josh: Have I asked you for sympathy? Have i asked you for absolution, reva? Have i begged you to tell me that i didn't do a damn thing wrong? No. Because I know what I did. What's making this so much harder for me is the fact that i have to go through it alone.
Reva: I wish that i could make you feel better.
Josh: But you can't.
Reva: Any more than you can give me comfort right now.
Josh: At least I'm trying.
Reva: Well, don't. Because every time i look at you, all i see is the... I just don't want to make this any worse than it already is.
Josh: How could it possibly be any worse than it is now? You know, maybe it would be better if you didn't have to look at me.
Reva: What does that mean?
Josh: Maybe i should just move out of the house.
Reva: I'm not asking you to leave the house.
Josh: Call it a gesture of goodwill.
Reva: Oh, don't make yourself out to be the martyr here.
Josh: Oh, relax. I'm a long way from that, reva. It wouldn't be forever.
Reva: Only until things get better?
Josh: Yeah, that's the idea. I mean, I'll... I'll call buzz and I'll see if he's got a room available at the boarding house. Or better yet, i could just head over there tonight. How would that be?
Reva: Boy, you sure do move fast when you decide to do things.
Josh: See, that's exactly why i think I should move out: Because I don't really need to hear any more comments like that, reva, and this way you won't have to make them.
Reva: I don't like this. I hate that I'm so angry with you. It feels so ugly.
Josh: That's how it comes across, reva. Hey, this would be better for you, too, wouldn't it? I mean, wouldn't it be good for you to have some time alone to think about things? Tell me the truth.
Reva: It might.
Josh: I don't want to cause you any more pain.
Reva: I understand.
Josh: So I'll go.
Reva: Marah's not going to like it.
Josh: I'll explain it to her. Unless, of course, you get to her first.
Reva: I can't believe that it's come to this.
Josh: What part of this has been believable so far? I think about shayne lying there in that hospital bed and i think i must be living somebody else's life, you know? Somebody who's in hell right now.
Reva: And i'm married to him.
Josh: I'd kind of like to hang onto that part, if that's okay. You know, the married part.
Reva: I got that. Oh, joshua...
Josh: Hey, you know, think about it. This... I'll be staying at buzz's, it's right across the street from the hospital, and that's where i'm going to be spending most of my time, so maybe this will be a good thing. (Weak laughter)
reva: A good thing?
Josh: Yeah. If you say no, i won't do it. Okay. What is that that the say about tough times? The only way through is out?
Reva: That's what they say.
Josh: Give me about a half an hour or so, I'll head to the house and pack some things and i'll be gone by the time you get there.
Reva: Okay.
Josh: Okay. Good-bye, then.
Reva: Joshua.
Josh: Yeah?
Reva: Tell buzz to give you a room away from the bathroom, because I understand the pipes bang at night.
Josh: Good tip, thank you. Good-bye.
Ian: Shayne? Can you feel my thumb? Yeah, I know. The therapy may hurt. Sorry.
Marina: Well, at least he can feel.
Ian: Good, good. Make the movement a little more circular.
Marina: Okay.
Ian: There you go. Hey, two for one. Not a bad deal.
Marina: (Laughs)
ian: Oh, and your friend remy boudreau told me to give you hell.
Marina: You know remy?
Ian: Yeah. I teach two classes at the university. I've had him as a student.
Marina: Oh, i forgot he switched to a physical therapy major.
Ian: Yeah. He's a good guy.
Marina: Yeah, he is.
Ian: All right. Now, i don't know how much the docs told you about spinal cord injuries.
Marina: Actually, not much. Shayne's been asleep most of the time.
Ian: Okay. Well, according to the research, most recovery occurs within the first six months of injury.
Marina: So, what does that mean? After that, there's no hope?
Ian: No, no. Only that this is the crucial time, so your boyfriend's going to have to work his butt off.
Marina: Starting tonight.
Ian: You got it. Now, shayne, over the next few weeks, when it feels like you can't take it anymore, okay, that it's too painful and it seems like you're making zero progress, keep working, no matter what. Push yourself. Okay?
Marina: Shayne knows how to bust his butt. He's an athlete.
Ian: Yeah, I heard that. Pitcher, right? Signed with the cubs? Sorry, man. The cards are my team.
Marina: He'll let it slide. Right?
Ian: I mean, look at this as a whole new kind of training. I mean, basically, with a spinal cord injury, the body can't respond to the signals the brain is sending. So, we're really starting from scratch.
Marina: He's up for it.
Ian: I hope so, because it's not easy reteaching the body how to move, doing exercises to make sure the limbs stay flexible.
Marina: Yeah, and the muscles don't atrophy.
Ian: Wow. You're doing your homework.
Marina: Oh, no. Just, like, the two hours i wasn't here last night, I did some of my own research on the internet.
Ian: She's a keeper.
Marah: Tony. All right, look, the way i see it, you didn't have to help me, so i assume you did it because you wanted to.
Tony: Of course i did.
Marah: Then on the other hand, any time you're with me, it seems like you're in agony. I know, I know, you're dealing with something. Is it me?
Tony: No.
Marah: It is.
Tony: Marah, come on. Look, we... We tried to be together, it didn't work out. That's all.
Marah: Okay, well, if it didn't work out, then that's because of me.
Tony: Why do you keep saying that?
Marah: Because, tony, i am the one who freaked out over the whole ben thing. I'm the one who pushed you away when the pictures of that girl showed up. I knew that they were fake but i freaked out anyway. I acted like i didn't trust you again and like i was afraid of you again.
Tony: Oh, you were right to e afraid.
Marah: Tony, stop saying that.
Tony: Marah, what i grew up with, all that violence, that short fuse, it's who i am. That's what I do.
Marah: Not anymore.
Tony: Marah, why do you keep beating this point, why do you keep dancing around this point? Look, our relationship has been about me blowing up, you forgiving me, then me trying to change so I don't hurt you again.
Marah: You have changed.
Tony: No, i haven't. Not enough. It is in my nature to hurt people.
Marah: I never believed that. I know you would never hurt me again, tony. I know that.
Tony: You don't know anything, marah, because i already did something to hurt you.
Olivia: Felling better?
Phillip: Yeah. A little bit.
Olivia: Nothing like being by the water. It always calms me down.
Phillip: (Laughs) talk about a cruel irony.
Olivia: What do you mean?
Phillip: Alan and i aren't even related by blood and I end up with the same condition that he has anyway.
Olivia: Claustrophobia?
Phillip: I guess I may as well admit it.
Olivia: It's not that surprising, really.
Phillip: Yeah, well, maybe not to you. I'm ending up with all kinds of surprises lately. None of them any good.
Olivia: It's about control, phillip.
Phillip: What?
Olivia: Think about it. You and alan may not share the same genes, but you're identical in how tightly wound you are.
Phillip: We're both very clear about what we want. I'll grant you that.
Olivia: Yeah, but when you leave no room for deviation from your plan, or timetable, you sort of become rigid and it's a setup for a fall.
Phillip: Or an elevator ride from hell.
Olivia: I'm surprised you took this long for something to pop. Because you take on too much. Okay, you're over extended. There's no wonder you couldn't breath.
Phillip: Yeah. Well, I have responsibilities, olivia.
Olivia: Yeah, protecting everybody and fixing the world among them. You've got to relax.
Phillip: Oh, I know. I need to let go. Just let go.
Olivia: You're hearing a lot of that, lately?
Phillip: Oh, yeah. Not just from everybody. Rick and gus. From everybody. Of course none of you have my life, do you?
Olivia: You made your life; you can change it.
Phillip: No, I can'T.
Olivia: You can. If you want to control something, why don't you control that?
Phillip: I can'T.
Olivia: Why not?
Phillip: I can'T. Because when i start to relax that's when everything starts to go wrong. I thought lizzie was fine. I thought she was just fine. And she nearly killed you and this child. So you're going to have to excuse me if i try to make sure that nothing even remotely like that ever happens again. This...
Olivia: That wasn't your fault.
Phillip: This is the life i made? If this is the life that i made, I am in serious trouble. I have a daughter that scares the hell out of people, I've got a father that I can't make peace with, I've got a baby on the way with a woman who basically can't stand to have me around. That's not true?
Olivia: Just take it easy.
Phillip: Take... Take it easy. Yes, thank you. The companion cliche to let go. Take it easy, phillip. That's what I need to do. I need to take it easy.
Olivia: I just want you to slow down.
Phillip: I don't need to take it easy. I don't need to slow down. I just need to fix it. I need to make it stop. Every... Every step that you and i take apart from each other, this child keep slipping away from me. And I can't sit back and watch that happen. I can't do that.
Olivia: It won'T. It won't.
Phillip: Yes, yes, it will. It will. Trust me. It will happen if I don't do something about it. But there is something that i can do about till it's okay. There's something that we can do about it.
Olivia: Okay, what?
Phillip: We can get married. Marry me. You let go and marry me.
olivia: You know, you're proposing marriage the way someone pile sandbags on a levee during a flood: Like you're trying to avert disaster.
Phillip: That doesn't mean that it's a bad idea.
Olivia: Look I just think this is fear talking and not love, okay?
Phillip: I have very strong feelings for you.
Olivia: You don't want to let your little girl down. You think you're going to make the same mistakes with her that you think you did with lizzie. That's the only reason you want to marry me. You want to keep an eye on her so that she doesn't become another one of your failures.
Phillip: I think we could be very happy together.
Olivia: I think that this...
Phillip: Can I... Can i... Can I just say one thing before you give me an answer? Just one thing?
Olivia: Sure.
Phillip: Okay, thanks. You... You and i might already have been there if i had trusted you more. But I didn't. I didn't trust you. I had huge doubts about you. I admit that. And I did exactly what you say i do. I tried to control everything, went behind your back, got the paternity test. Didn't trust you, shut you down. No wonder you walked out on me. But you know what? It's been good because during this time I have been watching you.
Olivia: Oh, god, that's comforting.
Phillip: I have. No, and you... You have taken charge of your life and this pregnancy. You've adapted. You... You made friends!
Olivia: (Laughs) not many.
Phillip: Great. Enough to throw you a baby shower. No, you've become strong. You've become independent. You've become maternal.
Olivia: (Laughs) it happens when you have a child.
Phillip: Well, no, but that... That's good. See, i didn't think there was anyway that you could do this without me. I really didn'T. I tell you, I didn't. I didn't think there was anyway that you could have this baby without me. But you really don't need me for this.
Olivia: And i've worked so hard to get where I am.
Phillip: And that... That is why what i'm saying to you now is totally different from all the let's get-back-together speeches that I've given you over the past few weeks. This is not, not about rescuing you. This... I just want to be together.
Olivia: For the baby's sake.
Phillip: And mine.
Olivia: Are you saying what i think you are?
Phillip: Yes, i need you.
Marah: What did you do to hurt me?
Tony: Nothing. It doesn't matter now. None of that matters now.
Marah: Let me be the judge of that. Tony, I don't understand you. You say that you love me.
Tony: I do.
Marah: Okay, then we can work on this. We can get past this.
Tony: That's not going to happen.
Marah: Why not? I'm the one who pushed you away. I made a stupid mistake, okay? But that's not the way it really is.
Tony: No, no. The way that it really is, marah, is that we tried to make this work and it wasn't meant to be.
Marah: You don't believe that.
Tony: Hey, I know when it's time to move on. I will see you later.
Ian: This will help keep the muscles in the forearms toned.
Marina: Even if he can't move it by himself?
Ian: Yup. And then once he's been fully evaluated, we'll add electronic stimulation of the muscle group to the daily therapy. He'll be a busy guy.
Marina: Especially with me around. What should I do? So i do it like this?
Ian: That's good. That's good. Nice and slow. You're doing great. Keep breathing. Keep breathing, shayne. Keep breathing. Keep breathing. Keep going. Here you go. Breath, shayne. Here you go. Keep breathing. Keep breathing.
Marina: Hey, if i'm going to do this, you're going to do this, too, okay? Unless you're not the big team sports guy you say you are.
Reva: "We're pleased to tell
you that there's an opening in
the freshman class full
athletic scholarship."
That's great.
It's great.
My favorite valentine. (Laughs)
surprise.
Shayne: Tickets to the no
doubt concert.
Reva: Yes.
Now I know that I'm still
you're one and only gal.
Josh: Hey.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Wait a second now.
How was slamfest?
Huh? (Laughs)
shayne: You mean jamfest.
It was an awesome concert.
But I can't talk.
I got to change for the meeting
with mr. Walker.
Josh: Yeah.
Shayne: Don't want to keep
the big exec waiting.
Josh: Definitely not, son.
Shayne: And, dad, I have a
feeling tonight could have a
huge impact on my pro career.
Josh: So do i.
Olivia: You need me.
Phillip: I do. I swear.
Olivia: I know how hard that is for you to say.
Phillip: Just tell me if you'll be my wife. An answer. I really just would like an answer.
Olivia: I'm not saying no. But I'm not saying yes, either.
Phillip: So that's a non- answer answer. Okay. All right. That's a start. I feel better. Yeah, I do. Look, my shoulders aren't around my ears anymore.
Olivia: That's good.
Phillip: That's good. Yes. No, us. Us being together would be a good thing. Okay. All right. Okay. Let me take you to dinner. I think the country club is still serving this late. Let me call. Le me get us a table.
Olivia: Oh, you know what? No, no, let's not do that. Let's do this.
Phillip: What?
Olivia: What about tomorrow if... If you don't have plans and I don't have plans, we just... We call each other up and we... We get together. You know, make a spur of the moment kind of thing. You got a non-answer answer. Can you handle a non-plan plan?
Phillip: Yeah, yeah. Sure i can.
Marina: Yeah, physical therapy wore him out.
Marah: So is the therapist coming back tomorrow?
Marina: I don't know. Even if he doesn't, he's going to get a session.
Marah: What do you mean?
Marina: Well, i'm going to be his coach. I'm going to be like his motivator, you know, whatever you want to call it. I'm going to be here everyday to make sure that he does those exercises and he will walk again.
Marah: Marina, you have the most amazing attitude, but you also have a life. Now you don't have to worry about shayne. Someone will always be here for him.
Marina: Yeah, i will.
Marah: And what are you going to do about school? You can't keep skipping your classes.
Marah: I don't know. I don't know. And that's why i'm going to go down to the registers office tomorrow and i'm going to tell them i'm taking this semester off. I mean shayne is so much more important than school right now.
Josh: Hi.
Reva: Hi.
Josh: I'm sorry. It took me a little longer to... Get my things together than i thought I would.
Reva: You only have one bag.
Josh: Yeah, it's a little hard to focus right now.
Reva: Right.
Josh: I guess i'd better go.
Reva: You're going to be at buzz's.
Josh: Yeah, um. Yes, i called over there and he's got a room available. So...
Reva: Good.
Josh: I figured i'd just drop... Drop my one bag off and head over to the hospital.
Reva: And you'll let me know if there's any news?
Josh: Yes, of course, i will. And I'll probably see you there tomorrow. Okay, you take care of yourself.
Reva: You too.
Olivia: Next on "guiding light."
Danny: Hey! You don't know anything about me, you little, smart-ass punk.
Bill: It's not too late, man.
Tony: Listen, marah and i are over. I told her.
Girl: Hey, babe, you didn't tell me it was a party.
this has been "guiding light."
