General Hospital Transcript Thursday 10/18/01 By Suzanne >> Previously on "General Hospital" -- Melissa: I want you to come home with me. Ned: You don't want to vote her out of ELQ? Edward: All I've ever wanted was to bring this family together. Mac: I could use some help with the Sorel investigation. Felicia: Really? Jax: I mean, if all of you are in danger, who will protect you? Sonny: I'm staying with Alexis tonight. Mac: I'm warning you upfront -- I'm not sharing my pot stickers. Felicia: I don't want any pot stickers. Mac: Yeah, you always say that until halfway through dinner. Which is why I got you a whole order of Peking duck. Felicia: Oh, that's nice. Mac: You hate Peking duck, Felicia. You swore off it after Lucy accused you of being insensitive to waterfowl. Felicia: Then why'd you order me Peking duck? Mac: I didn't. It was a test, and you failed. Right now you're too worried about Luke to think straight. [Felicia sighs] Felicia: You're right. I'm thinking straight now. Go ahead. Fire away. Mac: Good. That's what I need. Well, here's your fragrant chicken. Felicia: Thank you. Mac: And here are the case files. Eleven suspects, all with means, motive, and opportunity, but no one with a clear chain of evidence. Felicia: Who's on the top of the list? Mac: Melissa Bedford. We searched her apartment. We found a medical catalog with a page marked for the E.K.G. simulator. She was also banned from ICU but admits she was there that night. Felicia: What's her motive? Mac: Sorel's responsible for her brother's death. And then there's Roy. I mean, how did a thread from his shirt end up on the respirator equipment? Melissa: Well -- at least we know Luke is safe for tonight and the hospital's doing everything they can. Roy: Which is what? Put him in bed, keep their fingers crossed? Melissa: Hey, he's holding his own, you know. Roy: He's losing his mind. And nobody knows whether the damage is permanent. The worst thing is hearing him talk like it's 1979 and we're about to open the Campus Disco. He's laughing about how great it is, like -- like we got our whole lives in front of us. Meanwhile, whatever it is in him that's making him so sick is eating him up. I'm sorry. I've got to get out of here. Melissa: Roy, Roy, wait. What do you think you're going to do? Edward: Well, the prodigal has returned. So, what are you drinking, A.J.? The hair of the dog that bit you? A.J.: You tell me. Gin? Vodka? Peppermint schnapps? Hmm? Edward: It's water -- this time. You know, A.J., you're almost as irritating sober as you were drunk. Monica: A.J., thank God you're all right. Alan: A.J., where've you been? Skye was ready to send out a rescue party. A.J.: Yeah, well, I could have -- it's too bad she didn't know where to look. Could have used some help. Skye: Mr. Jacks. I hope you remember me. Skye Chandler-Quartermaine? Jax: Yes, of course. Edward's unsuitable granddaughter. Skye: May I come in? I guarantee you'll be interested in what I have to say. Jax: Well, you seem very confident, Ms. Chandler-Quartermaine. Skye: Oh, Skye, please. I like to think we're about to become better acquainted. After all, we do have so much in common. Jax: Do we? Skye: Well, my grandfather would love to kick us both out of ELQ, and I loathe and despise Sonny Corinthos as much as you do. Perhaps we could pool our resources and see what we can accomplish. Carly: You're spending the night with your attorney? Sonny: Well, yeah -- that's one way to put it. Carly: Isn't that a conflict of interest or something? I guess I'll have to see what Asher Wilder -- my divorce attorney -- you remember him? I'll have to see what he has to say about this little arrangement. Sonny: Call him if you want. Have him bill me for the time. File an injunction if you have to. Alexis will just have it thrown out. Carly, we both know every move in this dance before either one makes it. Me sleeping on Alexis' couch tonight has nothing to do with the divorce. Carly: It has everything to do with our family. Look, if you really want out, if you -- if you've taken it this far, just forget about adopting Michael. Alan: A.J., let me give you the number of my sponsor. Just call him, maybe go to a meeting. A.J.: I don't need one. Alan: Look, I know you've never worked the program, but just try -- A.J.: Save it. Please, stop treating me like a pathetic drunk. Edward: You're probably too far gone to remember, A.J. See, the bartender who brought your keys home to us told us what bad shape you were in. A.J.: Why are you so eager to believe the worst in me? Monica: A.J., are you trying to tell us that something else happened? Carly: I'll owe you for the rest of my life for having A.J. sign away his parental rights to Michael. It is the greatest gift anyone has ever given me. Sonny: Then let it be enough. Carly: Smile and say, "Thank you"? Sonny: Yeah, yeah. Carly: Let you become the legal father of my child while you want to just walk away with another woman, who happens to be your attorney? Alexis: Sonny is protecting me. Carly: From who? Sorel's ghost? Alexis: I'm being threatened, and I can't tell you anything more than that. Carly: Oh, isn't that convenient. Are you actually buying this, or do you just expect me to? Sonny: I'm here -- I'm here tonight because I'm protecting Alexis. You can believe it or not. Carly: Do you actually want me to call you a liar? Sonny: If that's what you think. All the time we've been together -- even before when I hated you -- I never lied. I withheld information for your own good or because I didn't trust you, but I never said a thing that wasn't the truth. Carly: Because you never had to. Sonny: Well -- Carly: It was always up to me to -- to accept a half-explanation or none at all. Look, I won't do that where my child is concerned. Alexis: Do you think it's a good idea to use Michael to hold over Sonny's head? Carly: Look, don't imply that I'm using my child. Alexis: Aren't you? Carly: Then why don't I just go ahead and sign over the adoption papers, give myself a permanent tie to Sonny? I don't want to use Michael, and that is why I waited. I just don't see a point for you to adopt a child if you're going to be leaving his mother. Sonny: Michael needs to know he can count on me. Carly: He does. Sonny: Yet it has to be legal. That way there isn't any question. I don't want to be a stepfather or someone Michael used to know. I don't want to disappear like his room in my penthouse or the 50 other places he's lived since he was born. Listen to me, okay? You've been great with Michael. Even when you were dead wrong, you were fighting for him, and that's what I'm trying to do. He matters more than our divorce, more than all the ways we could wreck each other. Okay? So all I'm saying is you may be, you know, a little selfish, I'm selfish, but not about Michael. We cannot be. I want to be his father because it's what he needs. Carly: He needs more than that. I want you to call off the divorce. You can have what you want if I can have what I want. Okay? Skye: Sonny owns 15% of ELQ stock and, well, I'm sure you'd agree that the company would be much more viable without him. Perhaps you and I could even run ELQ together someday. Jax: Are you suggesting we plot a takeover? Skye: Well, I'm always open to future possibilities. But at the moment, I'd like to concentrate on getting Sonny's stock. I understand that -- that you've known Sonny for quite a long time and that you have a less than amicable relationship? According to A.J., you became bitter enemies over a woman. Jax: It's time for you to get to the point. What's in it for me? Skye: Revenge. I've seen you in the room with Sonny. Clearly there's no love lost between the two of you. So, what's his Achilles' heel? How do I get him? And will you help me do it? Melissa: Please tell me what you're planning on doing. Roy: I don't know. I'm going to knock on some doors. I'll knock down a door if I have to. I'm going to get in Helena Cassadines face and force her to tell me how to save Luke. I've got to do it now. He's running out of time. Melissa: Wait, Roy, please. I understand you're -- you want to save your friend's life. I get that. But you can't risk your life just because it's less painful for you than just waiting. Roy: I'm sorry, Melissa. Melissa: No. Please, you can't do this. You -- I can't lose you again. Don't you know how much I love you? Skye: So, what do you say? Shall we bring down Mr. Corinthos together? Jax: You know, you've got guts, Ms. Chandler-Quartermaine, but you're way out of your league. I'm sorry your trip was wasted. Skye: Oh, on the contrary. I came down here thinking that Jasper Jacks was a good and decent man, but I've learned so much more -- that he's powerful and astute. Jax: Not easily swayed by flattery. Skye: I'd be disappointed if you were. Jax: You know, your pitch is entertaining, to say the least. And your packaging -- well, it's quite attractive. But so far, nothing you've offered me holds my interest. You're greedy and manipulative, and they're your good qualities. You're not going after Sonny for the love of A.J. You want his stock. He probably insulted you somehow. Actually, if I had to guess, I would say you threw yourself at Sonny and he turned you down. Now, if even Sonny didn't buy your act, then who am I to disagree? Skye: I'll tell you what you are -- you're an arrogant jerk! You know, we could have made an unbeatable team against Sonny, but you're just too stupid and too blind to see it. Jax: Good night, Ms. Chandler-Quartermaine. Jax: Hey. Angel: Hey. Jax: This must be my night for beautiful visitors. I hope you're in a better mood than she was. Angel: Well, that depends. What does that woman have against Sonny? Jax: You know, more importantly, when are you going to start playing it smart and give up on him? Felicia: What about Angel Ellis? Mac: That's a good question. She visited Sorel many times in the hospital, and it wasn't common knowledge that she was his daughter. Felicia: Do you want your rice? Mac: No. Go ahead, help yourself. But no pot stickers. Felicia: I told you, I don't -- Mac: Don't want any pot stickers. I know, I heard you. Dinner's not over yet. Felicia: Okay, let's get back to the matter at hand, shall we? You're leaving out the most important suspect -- Sonny Corinthos. Sonny: My mind's made up about the divorce. Carly: I tore up the papers. I need another set. Alexis: Sure. I'll get them in my files. Carly: Okay, you claim to be honest. You tell me how this divorce is the best thing for Michael. You make me believe it. Sonny: Is it better for him to grow up in a house where we're at each other's throat or, worse, where we don't speak at all, where I don't tell you something and you lash out at me by doing something crazy? And then I'm mad at you for lying and you're mad at me for controlling you? And we never fight in front of Michael because when he walks in the room, we shut up? Is that what -- is that what you want? I don't. I want -- I want Michael to see that I honor and admire his mother, even if we don't live in the same house. Carly: Maybe I am crazy for pushing you. Maybe it is better if we just end this. Sonny: Well, you know what? If that's -- whatever. You can do it, then. Carly: You know what? You don't get it both ways, Sonny. This divorce is your idea. You. You're the one who would rather wreck your whole family, you'd rather push away the two people you love most in this world, than take a chance on being happy. Alexis: This is identical to the original, but I would still have your lawyer look it over carefully. Carly: Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you're just bored with me and you're sick of your loon lady, so you're really ready to check out what's behind door number three -- pinstripes and neurosis. You know, Sonny, sleeping with your attorney isn't the smartest thing you've ever done. Then again, you always were a bit self-destructive. Sonny: All right, I'm going to -- I'm going to have a guard on you and Michael -- Max or Adam. If you see someone you don't recognize, can you at least call me? Carly: Right. Okay, let me see if I get this straight. Alexis -- she has you to protect her, and I get Adam and Max. Yeah, I got it. [Door slams] Sonny: Well, I'm sorry -- Alexis: No, don't -- Sonny: She's -- Alexis: Don't apologize. The fact that she's jealous is absurd. I mean, how could she possibly think that there's anything going on between the two of us? Sonny: There is something going on. Angel: You know what? I am not here to argue about Sonny, okay? I just wanted an update on Kristina because you never explained why you moved her. Jax: Well, I didn't approve of her bodyguard. You know, it's bad enough that you and Alexis are tangled up with Sonny. I didn't want Kristina anywhere near those people. Angel: Hello. I'm one of those people. Jax: Your father was. You know, I couldn't even imagine you with someone like Sonny. You belong where I met you -- on the French Riviera. Angel: I was running from my past. I didn't want to be Joseph Sorel's daughter, but I can't escape that. My father taught me very well, and he paid for it. Jax: What do you mean? Angel: Well, you know, he taught me how to stay detached -- fortunately for you. Jax: How so? Angel: Our affair. Well, there was a moment when I wanted more, but I got past it. Jax: You never said anything. Angel: Well, I didn't see the point. You're still in love with Brenda. That's fine. Look, I care about you, Jax, and I know that you care about me. But that doesn't give you the right to tell me who to be with. Jax: Have you heard of that expression "If too many people tell you you're drunk, you should sit down"? Well, Sonny will bring you nothing but pain. You're too smart to go there, and I think on some level you know that. Angel: You know, I told Sonny I wanted him. Maybe as a way to stick it to my father, you know. Or maybe because he reminded me of Donny. Or maybe because the man is just plain attractive. But the point being is that Sonny is not breaking down my door, and that's fine, too. Jax: You're over him, aren't you? Mac: Angel Ellis was involved with Sonny in some way. Felicia: But who's the stronger suspect, Angel or Sonny? Mac: Take your pick. Sonny not only wanted revenge, he wanted Sorel's territory. He had double motive. Felicia: Would either one of them know how to deal with medical equipment? Who else at the hospital that night had motive? Mac: Alan and Monica Quartermaine. Monica: A.J., if you weren't out drinking, what were you doing? Edward: Maybe he was abducted by aliens. What'd they look like, A.J.? Little green men or big pink elephants? Monica: Shut up, Edward! Alan: A.J., a relapse can happen to an addict at any time. Believe me, I understand -- A.J.: No, you -- you don't understand. Dad, I have been to hell and back. You have no -- Skye: A.J., we've been over this. I'm sure you don't want to discuss this anymore. I mean, besides, you've already promised to go to a meeting with me, so there -- there really is nothing else to say, is there? Alan: Is this true, A.J.? A.J.: Yeah. Alan: That's the right decision. Thank you for helping your brother, Skye. Edward: Oh, yes, of course. And now I think we should throw a party. I can't stand one more minute of this -- Alan: Oh, shut up! Edward: Inane driveling. Alan: You just -- oh! Monica: I'm just glad you're all right, sweetheart. Skye: Well, I'll say one thing about Grandfather -- he certainly knows how to clear a room. A.J.: You have no idea how much I want to prove him wrong. Skye: A.J., if you say one word about Sonny forcing you to sign away your child, how do you think our father's going to react? A.J.: Yeah, well, you know, he's been known to lose his cool. Skye: Yeah. If he tries it on Sonny, how do you think Sonny's going to retaliate? I just found my father. I don't want to find him at the bottom of a river somewhere. A.J.: You don't understand. You have no idea how -- how much I hate my family assuming that I'm some pathetic drunk! Sonny's going to pay. He's got to pay. Skye: Oh, he will, believe me, when he least expects it. Now, I thought I found a way, but not to worry. I'll find another. Sonny: Carly hates it when I tell you the things I won't tell her. Alexis: Carly obviously does not understand the concept of attorney-client privilege. Sonny: Mostly she resents that -- ahem -- you're a woman. Alexis: Not much I can do about that -- right now, anyway. Sonny: Well, she's got a point, though. I mean, if you were only my attorney and someone threatened you, I'd send a guard but I wouldn't be, you know, sleeping on the couch. I mean, I only do that for friends. Alexis: Oh, it's a good thing that she didn't rip up the divorce papers into confetti again and throw them all over my room because Graciella doesn't come until Monday and I have no idea where the vacuum cleaner is. Sonny: She didn't rip up those papers. Alexis: Did you want her to? That is the dance that you two dance all the time. You don't want the marriage, she wants the marriage, until she does something crazy, and then you give in. Would you be disappointed if she were the one to give in? Sonny: You drew up the papers. You know why it had to be this way. Alexis: If she made a valid point, it was about the contradiction of you wanting to adopt Michael while in the process of divorcing his mother. Wouldn't it just be easier if the two of you reconcile? Or not. Sonny: My work involves secrets. Carly can't accept that. It involves quiet. Carly's loud. There are certain things Carly, you know, shouldn't know, but she can't accept that. You know what I mean? It's not in her. But, then again, it's not fair of me to ask. I mean, let's be honest, you and me. You think Carly's crazy, and I can't argue with that. But she is beautiful inside, where it counts. Carly has no honor and she wouldn't know the truth if it jumped up and bit her, but she loves with her whole heart. And that thing that makes her Carly -- that fire, that in-your-face stubbornness -- would get burned out of her if she stayed with me. Now, people -- people have accused me, you know, of breaking people, and I don't want -- I don't want to do that with Carly and I -- I don't want her to do that to me. I've had enough of chaos. If Carly and I are apart, then my life is under control. Can you understand? Alexis: Me understand con-- Sonny: I'm sorry. Alexis: I almost fell in the chair. Control -- I mean, you know how I am about control. I keep everything in nice, little compartments. The problem is sometimes you end up alone in one of those compartments. Melissa: I mean, I understand if we just stay friends, that that's -- that's just fine with me. Because I want you to know that you've change my life and that you've kept that promise that you made at the campsite and you have made me so happy. Roy: I'm just not sure if it's right for me to stay here with you with Luke in the shape he's in right now, you know? Melissa: I understand that you want to help your friend, but I think you should just -- just wait. Because that way when you really do need to fight for Luke, then you're ready instead of just sacrificing yourself for no reason. Roy: So, meanwhile, just -- just sit by and do nothing? Melissa: There's nothing to do, really. You know what? Tomorrow if nothing's changed and you still can't get through to Helena, then I won't even try to stop you. But for now, tonight, would you please just stay safe with me? Would you just please let -- let me love you? Sonny: There are advantages to being alone. At least I know I can count on myself. Alexis: But is it worth the loneliness? Sonny: For me. Alexis: I'm very familiar with that rationale. I use it all the time. What's a little twinge of isolation compared to the fear of needing someone? Sonny: You got to do what you got to do to survive, even if it means protecting yourself from someone you love. What you got to do is you got to tell them the truth. This is who you are. This is how you live your life. This is as much as I have to give and as far as I'll go. They either accept it or they don't. At least you know you were honest. Alexis: That's very profound from a man with no ethics and morals. Sonny: It's part of my code. Alexis: Use that word again and I'm going to have to ask you to leave. Sonny: You know what? We already settled this. I'm going to stay here and make sure you're safe. Alexis: Okay. Okay, I'm going to go fix up the guest room and -- actually, I should probably let you do it because I'm sure you're rather persnickety about how your bed is made. Sonny: You know what? If you're interested in my bed-making skills, I'd be happy to demonstrate for you. Alexis: That's okay. I'll just give you the -- the blanket and the sheet. Sonny: All right, you know what? I'm not sleeping very much, so I'm going to go ahead and sleep on the couch. Alexis: Okay. Then I'll just get you a pillow. Here you go. Sonny: Yeah, I can pretty much -- I can take it from here. Alexis: Great. Okay, so I'm going to just turn in, unless you need me for anything. Sonny: No, I'll be fine. Alexis: Okay. All right. So, good night and thank you. Sonny: Okay. You're welcome. Good night. Alexis: Good night. [Sonny chuckles] Carly: Oh. It's you. Bobbie: Oh. Well, hello to you, too. Who were you expecting? Carly: Realistically? One of Sonny's bodyguards. But in my wildest of dreams, it would be Sonny himself crawling on his hands and knees. Bobbie: Has something else happened, or is this just more of the same? Carly: Well, I told you that Sonny wants to adopt Michael. Bobbie: Yes. You also said that you weren't going to rush into anything. Honey, look. I know that Sonny loves Michael, but I'm not sure that this is the best way to show it. Carly: Oh, well, don't worry because Sonny seems to have other priorities at the moment -- like spending the night with his lawyer. Bobbie: Oh. I don't believe that. Carly: Well, believe it, because I just left them both at her penthouse. Bobbie: Is this where I'm supposed to defend Sonny? Carly: Why start now? Why don't you just trash him along with me? Why don't you tell me how rotten Sonny is and how much better off I'd be if I just ended the marriage. You know what? I have got the divorce papers right here. All I need to do is sign them. I just need a pen. Bobbie: Carly, look, it's no secret that I think you'd be better off without Sonny, especially now that he's making you crazy. But to go and do something like this -- it's a mistake to do it out of spite. You'll almost certainly regret it. Carly: I don't know what else to do. Felicia: Who else? Mac: Carly and Bobbie. Felicia: Carly -- maybe. Bobbie -- no chance. Are you going to eat those pot stickers? Mac: There. See? Here we go. Felicia: All I'm saying is if they're going to sit there and get cold, it's just going to be a big waste. Mac: What about Bobbie, Felicia? Look, I don't want to believe that she's guilty, but a witness can place her in the ICU. Felicia: I would imagine there's at least six suspects that work in the hospital that have better motive than Bobbie does. Mac: This case is a nightmare. We've got multiple suspects, conflicting evidence, and no way to force a confession. Felicia: I may have one, but it'll cost you the pot stickers. Okay, here's what we have to do. We have to throw the suspects off. There's power in numbers. The guilty person is naturally going to be very quiet and not say a word and hide in the background. What we have to do is prove the people that are innocent. That way the guilty person will show. Felicia: Well? What do you think? Mac: If nothing else, it could shake something loose. Felicia: And all it cost you is a few pot stickers. Mac: You earned them. Felicia: Thank you. Mac: It's great working with you again. Roy: You've -- you've brought light to all this darkness. You know? It's been so many years since I believed it was possible. I thought I would be trapped in my guilt and regret till the day I died. Thank God I was wrong. I look in your eyes, I see so much hope, such grace. I love you, Melissa. Singer: I'll give my heart give my soul I won't hold back I'll give you everything all of me completely Angel: Yes, I'm over Sonny. Jax: Why do you think I suggested champagne? Angel: Well, I hate to break it to you, but I'm over you, too. Jax: Something else I enjoy -- you get to the point. Angel: I still like you, though. Jax: Oh, good, because I kind of like you, too. You know, you're probably the only woman I've ever been close to that I didn't feel I had to protect. But you'll tell me if you ever need me? Angel: Well, I think I can manage without a white knight, but it's nice to know you're in my corner. Jax: Well, here's to good times in the past. Angel: Hmm -- better ones in the future. A.J.: See, hating Sonny -- it's not enough. I've done that for years. We need a plan. Skye: I know. And I thought I could get Jasper Jacks to help, but he's too egotistical. No, you know what we need to do is to take stock -- Edward: Look, there they are, right where we left them -- hip deep in some conspiracy. Unless you're naive enough to believe that A.J. was sincere about attending an AA meeting. Skye: Oh, careful, Grandfather. I thought that you agreed to be nice to A.J. Edward: Well, you were mistaken. Skye: How unfortunate. Now I think I need to tell the whole family where you were the night of the murder. A.J.: You look awfully pale. Is it your heart or your conscience? Skye: I've been keeping a secret, and it's just weighing me down. I think I need to unburden myself and tell the whole family exactly where you were the night Joseph Sorel was murdered. Carly: After everything I have done for Sonny, the risk that I took -- Bobbie: What risk? Carly: It's nothing. I don't even know what I want anymore. I love Sonny and he loves me. How much you want to bet he is standing at Alexis' window right now and looking out over at this house and missing our family. I don't know. Maybe just letting this go is the best thing I can do. Carly: What do you know? Who says you can never find a pen when you need one? After everything I did for him, after I saved him -- and now this. Sonny: Damn it, Carly. Alexis: Oh, my God. >> On the next "General Hospital" -- Zander: What do you want? Officer: You need to come with me. Alan: Will you please tell us, what is this all about? Carly: They're more than lawyer and client. Alexis: It was just a dream. Sonny: What was it about? Angel: Let yourself love again. |
