Episode #13950 ~ Laura explains to Jennifer and Abigail the truth about Gwen's story. Gwen lashes out at Jack. Eli and Lani lure Dr. Raynor into a trap. Rafe comforts Nicole.

Rafe: Want to tell me what's going on?

Nicole: When eric called last night, when you were there, he told me that he was coming home the day after tomorrow.

Rafe: Well, that's great news.

Nicole: Yeah. I was really happy. I even came here to talk to roman about throwing him a party.

Rafe: Okay, so why are you so upset?

Nicole: Because--because i just got another call from him, and he said that the mission begged him to stay three more months. And he said okay.

Rafe: Oh, man. I'm sorry.

Nicole: I know that I shouldn't be upset with him. He's a good man. It's just that I really need him right now.

Gwen: Well, what you know?

Jack: Let me see that.

Gwen: Read 'em and weep, daddy. You see that there? They ran the test twice, so there's no denying that I'm yours anymore.

[Ominous music]

Jack: I... it never occurred to me that--

Gwen: That you could be wrong and I could be right? You turned your back on me when I was eight years old. Eight! I know you hate my guts, but the truth of it is you made me who I am today. Are you proud of yourself?

Jennifer: Why didn't you tell us you were coming?

Laura: It was just a spur of the moment decision after reading an article in "the intruder."

Jennifer: Oh, I wish you would cancel your subscription to that rag.

Laura: And if I had done that, how would I have found out that chad was having an affair with your nanny?

Abigail: It wasn't an affair, and it didn't happen the way the article said it did. Gwen definitely twisted the truth. But what did happen was bad enough.

Laura: Are you still separated? Oh, darling. I'm so sorry.

Laura: It's been a pretty awful time thanks to gwen.

Laura: What else happened?

Jennifer: Well, for starters, she's part of the reason why jack and I stayed separated for so long.

Laura: Does this young woman have something against you and jack?

Abigail: Well, it's the same thing that she has against chad and me and the entire family. She claims that dad is her biological father.

Laura: Oh.

Jennifer: Well, we're about to find out if it's true. Jack agreed to a paternity test. He's gone to the hospital to get the test results. Gwen claims that jack has always known about her but refused to have anything to do with her. She says that he had his secretary pay off her mother on the condition that she and her mother stay away from him. Jack never knew that he fathered a child. It's all just lies.

Laura: No, honey. It's not all lies.

Jennifer: What?

Abigail: Grandma, what are you talking about?

Laura: I never--never thought I would have to tell you this, but that secretary who sent the checks was me.

Abigail: But I don't understand. You were never dad's secretary.

Laura: There's just so much you don't know. I think I have to start from the beginning .

Lani: What if raynor doesn't show?

Eli: There's still time. She's not due at the park bench for another 10 minutes.

Lani: You've been watching it for an hour.

Eli: Yeah, well xander says that the meeting is a go. I want her in my sights as soon as she gets there. We're getting our babies back today.

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Lani: I wish I could be as optimistic as you are, but we are pinning all of our hopes on dr. Raynor when she swore to xander that she doesn't have the babies.

Eli: Yeah, well, she's a fraud and a liar.

Lani: Yeah, but what if this one time she's telling the truth, eli? Then we got nothing.

Gwen: Well, I have to say, going by the look on your face, you are not pleased at all to find out that you've got another little offspring. But, you know, the upside of this, for me at least anyway, is that I no longer have to hear you deny the truth about me being yours anymore.

Jack: I accept that I'M...

Gwen: Come on, come on. You can do it. Say it.

Jack: I won't challenge the results of this test.

Gwen: Good man. Good. I know that that's a very big step for you.

Jack: But, as for the rest of your story--

Gwen: It is not a story.

Jack: The part where I turned your mother away, the part where I instructed my secretary to pay her off, none of that ever happened. I never saw your mother, and neither did my old secretary. I called her this morning. She never knew your mother. She never wrote her single check. Neither of us ever knew you existed!

Gwen: Are you saying that what my mom told me--

Jack: I--I don't know how to explain it.

Gwen: Well, somebody is lying through their teeth, aren't they? And it sure as hell isn't me!

Jennifer: Mom, what do I not know? Should I leave the two of you alone?

Laura: Please, no. This concerns you too.

Jennifer: Okay. Let's have it.

Laura: Well, so, I read the article in "the intruder," and that young woman's name hit me like a ton of bricks. Okay, I mean... rizczech is not a name that pops up often.

Jennifer: Where had you heard before?

Laura: I--I'm getting there. So I booked the first flight that I could get, and I didn't even take the time to call you because I was hoping that I could get here in time to do some damage control.

Abigail: What kind of damage control?

Laura: I wanted to stop ms. Rizczech from going public about her claims that she was jack's daughter.

[Sighs] But obviously I was too late, so there's nothing stopping me from telling you everything that I know. This is the sound of an asthma attack...

Nicole: I have no right to be upset with eric.

Rafe: Well, he did tell you that he was coming home, and then he changed his mind. So--you do kind of have a right to be upset.

Nicole: You know, when he got the job offer, he turned it down for my sake? And I persuaded him to go.

Rafe: Yeah.

Nicole: It's just that, I mean, he didn't even ask me if he could stay. He just announced that he was doing it. Oh, my god. There I go again.

Rafe: You know, speaking as a guy, sometimes when we do something, and we feel guilty of the way we were treating the woman that we love, sometimes we rush through it just to--you know, in the hopes that she won't notice.

Nicole: Does that even work?

Rafe: Not usually, no. But maybe he felt like he was between a rock and a hard place.

Nicole: Yeah. So what does that make me?

Rafe: Eric would be a fool not to come back to you. And eric is no fool. Everyone knows how much he loves you, and... three months. It's not an eternity. 90 days.

Nicole: And 90 nights. I know you're right, it's just that I miss him so much.

[Sobs]

Rafe: Hey, come on. Come on.

Jennifer: Mom, will you please stop talking in riddles and just tell us what you know?

Laura: Honey, I have to start from the beginning.

Jennifer: Okay, well, let's have it.

Laura: 25 years ago was the beginning, when jack and I had returned from the meadows, and we'd moved in with you.

Jennifer: It's okay. Abigail what happened between you and jack at the meadows.

Laura: Oh!

Abigail: I don't like knowing it, but I do.

Laura: I'm so sorry, darling. Please try not to even--even think of it. Your father and I knew it was the biggest mistake of our lives. And your mother, she was--she was insane for taking us in. But we were all walking on eggshells, and we were very careful with one another.

Young laura: Oh, sweetheart, I wish you could find a way to forgive jack. He wants you back so desperately.

Young jennifer: Mom, stop pressuring me. Look, I know you feel guilty for sleeping with my husband, and I don't blame you for that. But you didn't know it was jack, and jack didn't know it was you. And besides, I'm with peter now.

Young laura: You don't love peter.

Young jennifer: Don't tell me how I feel.

Young laura: You have never loved anyone but jack. Not really.

Young jennifer: So what am i supposed to do, hmm? Do I just take him back because he feels bad? Do I just get over the fact that he walked out on me and abigail when she was terribly sick? Or rationalize the fact that he was unfaithful to me? Even if he didn't know was with my mother.

Young laura: Jack never loved anyone but you.

Young jennifer: And I was wildly in love with him, but look at where it got me. How could you ask me to give him a second chance?

[Oven timer buzzes] Abigail's dinner is ready.

[Doorbell chimes] Would you get the door? It's probably just someone selling something.

[Knocking at door]

Young laura: I'll get rid of whoever it is. May I help you?

Young tiffany: I sure hope so. I'm looking for jack devereaux. He lives here, right? You can tell him that tiffany rizczech wants to have a word with him.

Jennifer: So you're saying that gwen's mother really did come looking for jack?

Laura: Yes, that's what I'm saying.

[Dramatic music]

Jack: I intend to get to the bottom of what happened to your mother all those years ago. You are owed an explanation.

Gwen: Okay.

Jack: You are filled with anger at me for what you thought I did.

Gwen: What I was told that you did over and over again.

Jack: That doesn't change the fact that it didn't happen.

Gwen: [Sighs] Okay, fine. Whatever. But now that you know I'm your daughter, how about a nice, big hug for your long lost baby girl, eh? Ahoyy!

Gwen: No nice, big hug for gwen devereaux, eh?

[Scoffs] Why am I not surprised? After all, I'm not the fair damsel, abigail, am I?

Jack: I'm sure you can understand why it's tough to welcome you into the family after you've spent months trying to destroy the family.

Gwen: Oh, god. Here it comes, a long list of all my sins.

Jack: That's right. You drugged abigail. I don't know what you gave her, but it could have killed her. It could have destroyed her.

Gwen: She looks pretty healthy to me.

Jack: You convinced chad that she was having an affair, then you turned around and seduced him. They're separated now, and my grandchildren are miserable.

Gwen: I did not have to seduce chad at all. Let me tell you. He came onto me completely, and their marriage is not as happy as you would like to believe.

Jack: Jennifer and i were happy until you made sure that she found out about that one night with kate.

Gwen: That's because you couldn't keep your bloody trousers zipped up! All I had to do is make sure that she found out. My god! And don't you dare talk to me about morality. You know many bloody times you've mucked things up royally yourself?

Jack: We are in a hospital, for god's sake! Will you shut up?

Jennifer: So gwen's mother did talk to jack? So he lied to me?

Laura: No. Let me explain.

Young laura: I'm sorry, jack's not here right now, but if you're trying to sell him something, ms.-- What was your name again?

Young tiffany: Rizczech. Tiffany rizczech. And what I'm selling, jack already bought.

Young laura: I don't even know what you're talking about.

Young tiffany: Let me put you wise, okay? Eight or nine years ago, in chicago, me and jack, we had a fling. And it was only that one night. I never saw him again, but he gave me something to remember him by.

Young laura: Excuse me?

Young tiffany: You're a little thick, aren't you? He knocked me up.

Young laura: Jack got you pregnant?

Young tiffany: Yeah. And now we have a beautiful daughter, him and me. I named her gwen.

Jennifer: I can't believe this.

Abigail: Neither can I.

Jennifer: You're saying gwen really is jack's daughter?

[Tense music]

Nicole: Oh, oh, my goodness. I messed up your jacket.

Rafe: Don't worry about it.

Nicole: Oh, I have to pull myself together. I have to get to work.

Rafe: No, hey, can I at least buy you breakfast first?

Nicole: Oh, I can't go back in there. I just told roman that his son is coming home. I can't go back in there and break the bad news to him now. I mean, I'm gonna start crying again, and I can't--

Rafe: I know another good place for breakfast. Great coffee. Casa hernandez. Come on. Look, you took me out for pizza on my birthday. The least I can do is return the favor. I don't think you should be alone right now.

Nicole: Honestly, neither do I, so thank you.

Rafe: Okay. Come on, the coffee is good.

Nicole: I'm sure it is.

Eli: Could you try not to panic? Raynor knows that she helped xander switch sarah and kristen's babies. She wouldn't stand him up.

Lani: Eli, she is our only lead. If this falls through--

Eli: Wait. There she is. Let's go. Let's go. What's the #1 retinol brand

Nicole: The eggs are delicious. I just--I just really don't have an appetite.

Rafe: Yeah. Well, I was just hoping you'd feel better after you had something to eat.

Nicole: To be honest, I don't think I'm gonna feel better until eric comes home.

Abigail: Oh, my god. I was so sure that gwen was lying.

Jennifer: I just have one question, mother.

Laura: You only call me "mother" when you're angry.

Jennifer: How did I not know this woman came to our house?

Laura: I'm getting to that.

Young tiffany: You know, fate's a funny thing. I'm down to my last carton of butts, and I'm just about to be kicked out of my dumpy apartment because, you know, I lost my job. And, yesterday, I walk away from my tv after jerry springer, and I hear this voice. I'm like, "I know this voice. This is a really familiar voice." And I look on the tv. Jack devereaux is on the tv with his perky little costar, something--jennifer something.

Young laura: Devereaux. His wife.

Young tiffany: So I says to myself, "he's a tv star. That means he's got a lot of money, right?"

Young laura: Not exactly.

Young tiffany: Well, he sure as hell has more money than I do because I am dead broke, and I'm the one raising his kid, so the way I see it, he owes me and my daughter about eight years of child support. So I'm just gonna come in here, and I'm just gonna wait for him.

Young laura: Actually, that is not a good idea.

Young tiffany: [Whistles] Yeah, this is a nice place. Yeah, mm-hmm. We could definitely live here.

Young laura: Look, ms. Rizczech, as I told you, jack is not home, and he is not going to be home for some time now. But I promise you, if you give me your number, I will have him call you as soon as he possibly can, all right? All right.

Young tiffany: Okay. We'll do this your way for now. But you know what? If he blows me off, I know where he lives. So I will be coming back, and I'm gonna bring his kid with me.

Jennifer: So I was in the next room giving abigail her dinner. I never heard any of this. I never knew.

Abigail: But dad knew. He had to know.

Laura: No, you're wrong. He didn't know either.

Jack: I'm sorry I raised my voice.

Gwen: No, you are not sorry. And, just so you know, I am not ready to shut up yet! I am your creation, jack. Like frankenstein's monster. You spawned me, so you should not be surprised that I turned out this way. I mean, let's look at my gene pool. It's pretty murky, wouldn't you say? There's your dad, the serial killer. And then, oh, there's duke johnson. Well, we won't even go there. And then there's the rizczech side, and then there's you. So, if I'm meant to be the villain of this piece, that's because I'm a chip off the old block.

[Suspenseful music]

Dr. Raynor: Where the hell are you, xander? Something's not right. He's setting me up. Get out of my way!

Eli: You're not going anywhere, doctor.

[Tense music]

Ugh, there's that cute guy from 12c.

Nicole: Listen, I'm gonna go. I'll take my plate to the sink. Oh, my gosh! I am such a klutz. Oh, I'm sorry, duke.

Rafe: [As duke] No harm done, little lady.

Nicole: Wow, you're such a gentleman, just like your friend here.

Rafe: Aw, shucks, ma'am. It ain't nothing.

Nicole: Wow. Wow.

Rafe: Well, look. I didn't get you to eat much, but at least you're smiling.

Nicole: Yeah, I guess I am.

Gwen: We do have one thing in common then, don't we, father? Your birth parents didn't want you, did they? Your mother, she gave you to an orphanage, didn't she?

Jack: It wasn't quite like that.

Gwen: Your mother chose your sister. You weren't the favorite one, were you?

Jack: My life with my adoptive father and his next wife was less than ideal.

Gwen: Yeah, but they were loaded. That's the difference. You were brought up with money.

Jack: Still, it turned out pretty badly.

Gwen: Oh, god. Come on. You want to compare bad luck stories now, dad? I didn't think so. But at least I know I have standards because I know I would never throw my child away.

Jack: I never threw you away. I never even knew existed! Look, I know you want to feel vindication.

Gwen: What?

Jack: You want me to beg for forgiveness, but I can't be sorry for something I had no part in.

Gwen: You are not sorry at all! You are thankful that you never had to lay eyes on me. You are--you are thanking your lucky bloody stars that you never knew me, and I didn't have to ruin your relationship with jennifer!

Jack: No, as you pointed out, I managed to do that all of my own.

Gwen: Oh, yeah. But your life would have been so much better if I wasn't a part of it, right? Come on. Come on, just say it. You're absolutely tickled that you didn't have to know me, aren't you? And you're standing here wishing you didn't know me now.

Jennifer: I don't understand, mom. How could jack not have known?

[Somber music]

Young jennifer: Who was at the door?

Young laura: Oh, it was just someone collecting money for poor children.

Abigail: Well, I guess that wasn't a lie, technically.

Laura: [Sighs] I was panicked. I didn't know what to say. I didn't know what to do.

Jennifer: Well, you seemed to have worked it out, though.

Laura: I wanted to warn jack so that you wouldn't be blindsided by that woman's claims. I didn't know if there was really a child. I didn't even know if she had actually met jack. And then...

Jennifer: Then what?

Young jennifer: Would you mind staying with abigail tonight? Jack called. He wants to have dinner.

Young laura: That's wonderful.

Young jennifer: Don't get carried away. It's just a business dinner. He wants to talk about the show.

Young laura: If you say so.

Young jennifer: I don't have to go.

Young laura: Yes, you do.

Laura: You didn't see it, but it was clear to me that you and jack had started to inch toward each other again. And I knew if that rizczech woman got to you, that all of the progress that you had made would go right up the flue. And there was no way that I was gonna let you be hurt like that again.

[Dramatic music]

Woman: I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Rafe: I could've cleaned that up.

Nicole: Yeah, well, it's the least I could do. Because you were kind enough to throw me a pity party.

Rafe: Well, I told you last night that you don't have to go through this on your own.

Nicole: I know. I know.

Rafe: And you got a job now, so if you need a hand--

Nicole: Yeah, well, speaking of job, brady's in the hospital, and I need to stop feeling sorry for myself and get to work.

Rafe: Good call.

Nicole: Look, it's good. It's good to be busy, you know?

Rafe: Okay. Okay, good. All I'm saying is that, if you need a hand, I'm here. All you have to do is call, okay?

Nicole: Thank you, rafe but I'm late, and you have work to do too.

Rafe: Yes. Hey, nicole, wait.

Dr. Raynor: I don't know where the babies are now.

Lani: You're lying.

Dr. Raynor: I swear to you.

Lani: Those are newborns. Okay, they need constant care.

Dr. Raynor: And they're getting it--they're safe.

Eli: How can you say they're safe if you don't even know where they are?

Dr. Raynor: I am so sorry. I didn't want to do this. I can imagine the pain you're in, but I had no choice.

Eli: There's always a choice.

Lani: If you didn't want to do it, why did you do it?

Dr. Raynor: I was blackmailed, okay?

Eli: By who? Answer me!

Laura: I knew jack well enough that, if he heard tiffany's story, that he would agree to meet with her. And then he'd find out the truth. And I was--I was panicked. I was terrified, honey. This would be a blow from which you couldn't recover. So I--I made a decision, and I contacted tiffany, and I told her that jack wanted to meet her.

[Reflective music]

Young tiffany: Where is he?

Young laura: I'm very sorry, but jack wasn't able to make it.

Young tiffany: Who are you to him? Who are you?

Young laura: I'm his personal secretary.

Young tiffany: He sent his secretary? He couldn't even bother to see me himself?

Young laura: Please, sit down.

[Tense music]

Now, jack, of course, wants to do the right thing, but we've never seen gwen, so we don't know if she exists.

Young tiffany: Are you calling me a liar?

Young laura: If she does exist, well how are we to know that she's his child?

Young tiffany: Oh, she's his kid, all right. There you go. That's her last school photo. You see that? She's got his nose. Got the same little birthmark too, right on her little--

Young laura: Oh, oh, all right now. You don't have to go on.

[Sighs] Well, jack just feels terrible about this situation. I hope you know he would never turn his back on you if you knew that you were pregnant.

Young tiffany: Well, I couldn't find him to tell him about my situation, not until how I saw him on the tv.

Young laura: Well, he has a wife and a child now.

Young tiffany: Well, now he's got two kids. He doesn't want to know my gwennie, does he? He doesn't want to see her, and he doesn't want to see me. That's why he sent you.

Young laura: I'm very, very sorry.

Laura: I was determined to protect you and jack and abigail, but... I didn't protect you at all. I'm sorry.

[Melancholy music]

Gwen: Look, I know you hate me. But it's okay because I hate you more.

Jack: Go ahead. Hate me by all means, but jennifer did nothing to you and neither did abigail. You have taken it out on all of us, chad, my grandchildren--

Gwen: Me, my mom--

Jack: We could go around and around and around forever. What next?

Gwen: What does that mean?

Jack: You've had your revenge on us. What can you do to us now, gwen? What do you want now?

Gwen: What do you think I want? I'll give you one guess.

Jack: How much?

[Sighs] Come on. There must be a number. How much money will it take to make you go away and leave me and my family alone?

[Somber music]

Jennifer: So you saw a picture of jack's daughter, and you told her mother that jack didn't want to have anything to do with her? And you never told jack about her?

Laura: I--

Abigail: What about the money that gwen told us about?

Young laura: Jack really does want to make things right. He's authorized me to give you this check.

Young tiffany: That'll do for starters. But you better tell jack that he's got to keep these coming, or you're gonna be seeing me again.

[Dramatic music]

Oh, and you can give him this little messagE. You can tell him tiffany says he can go straight to hell.

Laura: I never saw or heard from gwen's mother again. And a few years later, I noticed that she hadn't cashed a check I wrote her; she was always very prompt with that. So I called her bank, and they said that her account was closed because she had died. And that's--that's all I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

[Wistful music]

[Weeping]

Rafe: Yeah, before you go, you and I, we agreed to share custody of duke here.

Nicole: Well, it wasn't set in stone.

Rafe: Right. Yeah. But even though, technically, it's not your day today, I think you should have him. You should have him. You should take him because he is gonna give you good company.

Nicole: Yeah, uh... I'm sure he will.

Rafe: Yeah.

Nicole: Thanks, rafe.

Rafe: See you.

[Warm music]

Dr. Raynor: I was living in new york. I had started over. I had a new job. I was delivering babies. I was doing something good. I thought I had put everything that I had done behind me--

Eli: But?

Dr. Raynor: One day, there was a call. I didn't know who it was, but this voice, he said he knew that I had switched two babies at salem university hospital and didn't I think my new employer would be interested to know that? He said he'd tell them if I didn't do what he wanted.

Lani: Wait, when was this?

Dr. Raynor: Around thanksgiving.

Lani: What?

Eli: What did he ask you to do? And tell us exactly what he said.

Dr. Raynor: That I was to take the children once they were born.

Eli: He said children?

Dr. Raynor: Or babies? I don't remember.

Eli: So he knew were twins.

Dr. Raynor: Yes. He wanted me to take your babies.

[Ominous music]

Ivan: It's ivan, madame. I am back. Madame.
