Claire: His name is Charlie.

Allie: Girl, you've never

mentioned him before.

Claire: I know.

You've just had so much

of your own stuff going on.

And I wasn't really sure

it was anything but...

Allie: It is now?

Claire: Yeah.

I mean, we've only been out

a couple of times,

but it's been really great.

Allie: [giggles]

Claire: We just went out

to dinner tonight.

So that's why I thought

he would text me.

He usually does.

Allie: Okay.

So you guys are, like,

full-on dating.

Claire: Mm-hmm.

I mean, I guess you could say

he's my boyfriend.

[laughter]

Allie: That's so great!

Okay, so wait.

Tell me about him.

Claire: Charlie...

is the best guy.

I think you're really

gonna like him.

Allie: Well,

Claire: Yeah.

but I followed Tripp

around London

like you asked me to,

and let me tell you.

He is not the saint

that you think he is.

Charlie: Yeah.

He was partying and at the pub

practically the minute

he got there.

Ava: He's not allowed

to go out?

Charlie: I'm just saying.

I know that you

don't wanna accept the fact

that he's guilty of rape,

but if Allie had a baby,

and the DNA is a match--

You and I both know

that someone else shares

a lot of the same DNA,

and that is you, Charlie.

because you and Tripp

Victor: You're out late.

Philip: I wouldn't wanna

slack off.

Let Titan stock take a dip.

Victor: You sure you

were concerning yourself

with Titan stock?

Or just sneaking around

with your new partner in crime?

[dramatic music]

Philip: Partner in crime?

You make it sound like

I'm up to something.

Victor: Aren't you?

Philip: With Sarah?

She has a lot of experience

in the music industry,

great connections we can use.

I thought it'd be a good idea

the sustainable silk,

but I think

Nicole's decision to hire you

may have been the best decision

Chloe: [laughs]

Allie: Okay.

Claire: Mm-hmm.

Allie: So tell me.

How did you meet

this absolutely perfect Charlie?

Claire: I literally

bumped into him.

Allie: You're kidding?

Claire: No.

I spilled my smoothie

all over his shirt.

Ava: [laughs] Oh, no.

Claire: It was

so embarrassing.

But he was so nice about it.

And it was right around the time

when I was planning

Ciara's memorial service.

Allie: Mm-hmm.

Claire: And even though

Charlie barely knew me,

he really listened.

You know?

He made me feel better.

Allie: Wow.

You found a guy

who actually listens.

You really did score.

Claire: I know.

[laughter]

It might sound really weird

because we really

haven't known each other

very long but...

Claire: Charlie makes me

feel safe.

He's always making sure

I'm okay.

And he's not just

protective of me.

He really cares

about my family too.

Like, when I told him

about what happened to you,

he was so sympathetic.

Charlie: Tripp and I

are only half-brothers.

Steve Johnson isn't my father.

that you and Tripp

which is more than enough

it appears that Tripp

is Allie's baby's father

is because his DNA

matches the real father's--

Steve: Oh, man.

It sure is good to have

Joey back, isn't it?

Tripp: It really is.

I can't imagine

what it's like for him

just to suddenly be free,

you know, after all that time.

And you and Kayla

to have your son home?

Steve: Mm.

Joey's such a good guy.

I'm so sorry

for what he went through.

I mean, it must have been hell.

Steve: Yeah.

For Joe and for everyone

who loves him.

we're gonna focus on the future

for both of my sons.

Well, mine is very uncertain

at the moment.

Steve: I don't think so.

anything you wanna do.

And I think you're gonna be

a fine doctor someday.

Tripp: I hope so.

Charlie was so understanding

Just wishing that Tripp

had got the punishment

that he deserved.

And he was shocked

like all of us were

that someone we knew could've

done something like that.

Well, someone

we thought we knew anyway.

Allie: [sighs]

Charlie: Allie's kid

shares DNA with Tripp

because Tripp is the father.

Ava: Charlie, really?

You think that I have gotten

this far in life

without being able to spot

a lie when I hear it?

Charlie: Mom, I--

Ava: Your job

was to keep an eye on Tripp.

Ava: You better watch it.

Tripp: [sighs]

Look, I'm pretty sure

I already know

what you're gonna say.

That my mom

has hurt a lot of people.

And that what she's done

to you and Kayla

and Hope,

all those things

are unforgivable.

I get that.

And I also get

that you think

my trying to reconnect with her

might be a mistake,

that I might just be better off

cutting her out of my life.

Steve: But you don't

wanna do that.

Tripp: When I was lying

in bed last night,

wide awake, you know,

wondering if I'll

ever go to sleep again,

I was trying to figure out

why in spite

of everything that I know,

you know,

everything that would ordinarily

make me want nothing to do

with someone,

why I feel this...

It's kind of like a compulsion,

to get close to her?

Steve: There's nothing

to figure out.

She's your mother.

Tripp: She's alive.

After all this time.

Steve: Yeah.

And it's natural

for you to have that compulsion

to wanna know the person

who brought you into this world,

gave you life.

Tripp: Yeah, but I--

part of it is, like,

wanting to know myself better.

Steve: [sighs]

Tripp: See, when I would

imagine her, I would wonder

how her and I were alike

or not alike.

Steve: I hope you don't mind

me saying this but I don't think

you're anything like Ava.

Tripp: Yeah, but, Dad,

I have to be.

I'm genetically half you

and half her.

given what I know,

I'd rather think

that I only take after you.

Steve: [laughs]

Tripp: Decency and honesty

and kindness, you know,

were all only passed down to me

I don't know much

about genetics.

I have this need

to get to know her, you know?

Steve: Makes sense

you'd have a lot of questions.

get answers.

Chloe: I just got an alert

from the warehouse saying

that their temperature control

is on the fritz.

And if they can't find

somebody to fix it,

then we can forget

about ordering that silk.

with warehouses.

I'm sure one is available.

Chloe: Do you think

we could make a deal

And speaking of Philip,

I'm glad that you gave me

a heads-up

that he's back in town.

I actually ran into him.

Victor: You feel if you

cozy up to Sarah,

you'll get under Xander's skin.

Philip: Dad, no.

This is strictly about

putting on a good concert.

Victor: Stop the act, son.

I know you hate Xander.

Every damn thing with you two

is a competition.

Philip: Xander is the one--

Victor: Look, enough.

I didn't make you and Xander

co-CEOS to see which one

could claw his way to the top.

Philip: I know.

I know you put us together

to make Titan

the strongest it could be.

Victor: Exactly.

If you'd just stop feeling

threatened by each other.

on the threats?

Ava: I will...

when you deliver

what you promised.

But it's not easy

laundering millions

breathing down my neck.

Allie: So...

You and Charlie,

do you think it's going

to get serious?

Claire: I hope so.

[laughs]

But for now,

we are taking it slow.

Allie: Yeah.

Claire: Which I think is good

'cause at the start,

we were both kind of hesitant

to get involved.

Allie: Why?

Claire: Well,

speaking for Charlie,

it was probably because

he kept running into my exes.

Allie: Mm.

Claire: Which made him think

I was--I don't know--

still pining for them

or something.

Allie: Yeah.

I can understand that.

Claire: It was just

really bad timing.

I mean, first it was Tripp.

And then he saw me kissing Theo

which was extremely awkward.

Allie: [laughs]

Claire: But we got through it

and now we're cool.

And I didn't want there to be

any secrets between us

so I told Charlie

pretty much straight away

about my history

with mental illness.

And, Allie, he was the opposite

of judgmental.

He was so supportive

and understanding.

Allie: Yeah.

He sounds like

a really good guy.

Claire: He is.

Charlie knows

everything about me.

The good, the bad,

the scary.

And he still likes me.

He was even okay

with meeting my crazy family.

Allie: [laughs]

Claire: Our crazy family,

I should say.

Allie: Oh, yeah.

Well, if he is good

with all of that...

Claire: [laughs]

Allie: Then he really is

the perfect guy like you said.

Claire: He definitely is.

Ava: Charlie?

That's not true.

I love both my sons equally.

Stop trying to play

the devoted mother act.

believe it yourself.

We both know that Tripp

is the only one

you've ever cared about.

It's why I had to live

with my dad--

because you couldn't be bothered

to raise me.

understand.

I was in a terrible

emotional state.

My child

had been ripped from me!

Charlie: I was your child

if you do choose to have

a relationship with your mother,

that's up to you.

You make your own decisions.

her games and manipulations.

very kind-hearted.

And you're going to want

to feel sorry for her.

You'll wanna help her.

Tripp: And why would that

be a mistake?

I don't think

anyone's beyond help.

I just love you

and I worry about you.

Tripp: And I really

appreciate you worrying

about me, okay?

But I know it's because

you're protective of me,

but, I mean, Dad,

it might not be as bad

as you think.

me living with her

was a dream come true.

And yeah, I've gotta admit

that got to me,

especially the way she said it.

I mean, she sounded

totally sincere.

I'm not naive about who she is.

But she seems

to really want me in her life.

Steve: I know she does.

I know Ava loves you.

But, Tripp,

she is never

gonna be a normal mother.

She's a very damaged person.

Tripp: I understand that.

And I know it's because

she had a terrible childhood.

I mean,

her father was a monster.

Steve: That he was.

He held her captive.

He controlled every aspect

of her life.

Tripp: And forced her

to give me up, I know.

Steve: I know you know.

But what you may not understand

is that because of all that,

Ava is unstable.

She's paranoid.

You know, she's lost

a lot in her life.

So she holds on

to whoever and whatever

she loves.

She holds on at any cost.

And it can be suffocating.

I'm afraid Ava has a very

warped sense of what love is.

Charlie: I needed a mother.

My whole life, all I ever wanted

was a relationship with you.

That's why I came

to work with you,

to try to impress you.

And then what did you do?

You ordered me to watch Tripp.

Do you know how humiliating

it was when I found out that

the person you wanted me to keep

tabs on was my own brother?

Ava: So is that why

you did this?

Is that why you attacked her?

To get back at me?

seemed pretty normal.

in Philadelphia with his dad.

He has a brother

but they're not really in touch.

Allie: And what

about his mom?

she was raised

in a crime family.

She still has ties to the mob.

It would be very easy for her

to fall back into that life

and drag you down with her.

Tripp: I will not

let that happen.

Steve: I trust

that you won't.

You have to promise me

you will go into this

eyes wide open.

You will never underestimate

what your mother is capable of.

Tripp: I have already

told Mom straight out

that if she's still involved

with the family business,

I wasn't gonna live with her.

And she swore that her money

comes from the legit side

of things.

Steve: Well, Ava will say

whatever she needs to

to get what she wants.

Tripp: Then, well,

since there's no proof

that she's done anything

but tell me the truth,

I'm gonna take her at her word.

Brady: You had mentioned

that you and Philip, uh,

had reconnected in New York,

and it didn't go too well.

Must've been awkward.

Chloe: No.

It was fine actually.

We were very civil.

We talked about what

went wrong with us.

You know, it was partly timing

and partly Mimi Lockhart.

and it was really nice.

And I thought that maybe

like a wrecking ball.

Chloe: Since I'm now

infinitely wiser

than I used to be

concerning her,

I just took myself

out of the running.

Yeah, sometimes the smartest

thing to do is to just

get the hell out of the way.

Though I do wonder

if I hadn't backed off,

if Philip would be

in this position he's in now.

when I walked away

from Titan the last time,

I was done for good.

That's what I told myself.

Victor: Then you came back.

Philip: And I realized

how important Titan was

to our family,

to me.

And I realized

more than I ever did

how easily a business like this

could be lost,

how important it was

to protect what belongs

to our family.

Victor: That's why

I hired you, Philip,

to protect our interests.

Philip: Yeah.

Yeah.

Dad...

there's something

I gotta tell you.

Maggie: Victor,

you are not gonna believe this.

Ava Vitali...

is alive.

[dramatic music]

Mimi broke

Philip's little heart.

Chloe: [scoffs]

Well, Philip technically

and his old gambling habits

kicked back in.

in some serious debts.

desperate for cash.

Philip comes home,

makes nice with daddy

to run the company

that he used to hate.

Makes sense.

Chloe: Yeah.

That's kind of what I thought

too, that he would take that job

at Titan just to make some money

but...

I don't know.

Philip kind of implied that

there was more to it than that.

Brady: More to it.

How so?

Chloe: I have no idea.

[intriguing music]

Victor: How can Ava Vitali

be alive?

Maggie: It's all

over the news.

Victor: Doesn't make

any sense.

Maggie: Oh, you mean

because Joey Johnson

is in prison for killing her?

Well, he got out.

Thank God.

Victor: Well,

if that succubus isn't dead,

then why isn't she in jail

for kidnapping Kayla?

Maggie: Well, apparently,

she cut a deal.

Philip: Damn it!

Well, the last thing we need

is that maniac running around

scot-free.

Maggie: I agree.

The woman is violent.

She'll take out

her worst impulses

on anyone who is unable

to get out of her way.

Victor: Well, I'm just

grateful the Kiriakis family

never had any dealings with her.

For once, we don't have

a target on our backs.

[tense music]

I should get going.

I've already kept Mom waiting.

Steve: All right.

Tripp: I think I should

be good for a while.

Steve: Good.

You know, Tripp,

I know that Ava

coming back into our lives

is a lot to process,

especially for you

because of what you've been

going through lately.

So I want you to take

good care of yourself.

Tripp: I will.

Steve: I got you, buddy.

Tripp: [chuckles]

Ava has changed.

All I do know

is that I invited him to spend

Christmas with all of us.

Charlie: I know that you've

always loved Tripp more than me.

I accept that.

And I'm sorry

that he was taken away from you.

I'm sorry I'm not the son

that you wanted.

But you have a choice.

You can clear Tripp's name

and send me to hell.

Or you can be quiet

and protect us both.
