Eli: JJ, what the hell are you saying? Why can't we get married?
Lani: Gabi was able to hack into the device, and with the touch of her app on
her phone, Gabi has the power to blow up Julie's heart.
JJ: So she--she threatened to kill Julie if you didn't walk ay from Eli?
Lani: Yeah. That is what Gabi is holding over me. Julie's life.
JJ: Look, man, you can't marry Gabi 'cause of Lani.
Abe: You're my daughter, Lani, and I love you, but I know something has been off
with you for a long time. I want the truth, Lani, now.
Lani: I'm sorry, Dad, but I have to go.
Abe: No, not before you explain all this to me.
Lani: Dad, I'm late. Vespers, okay? I'll talk to you later.
Abe: Lani!
Lani: Kristen, thank you, thank you.
Kristen: What?
Lani: For getting here so quickly.
Kristen: Yeah, looks like you found a place in Salem that's under the radar.
Lani: Yeah. JJ offered his place to me, which used to be mine and Eli's.
Kristen: Beggars can't be choosers. Is he, um, gone to work already?
Lani: Actually, he just bolted out of here on a mission to save Julie's life.
Kristen: What?
Lani: Yeah, that's why I called you, okay? Because I am afraid that it's gonna
have the exact opposite effect unless you intervene.
Julie: You know, that little machine of yours has been spitting out a lot of
paper, and you haven't looked at it once.
Kayla: Well, when I was examining you, everything looked really good.
Julie: Good.
Kayla: Let's see. Wait.
Julie: "Wait" what?
Kayla: There's just something a little odd here.
Julie: Odd? How? Is something wrong with my heart?
Kayla: No, um, it's your pacemaker.
Rafe: You're smoking now, Hope? What the hell is going on with you?
Steve (as Stefano): Are you sure you're ready to do this?
Hope (as Gina): Yes. At this point, it is our only option.
Marlena: I just can't shake this uneasy feeling that someone or something is
going to come between us.
John: Oh, sweetheart, you had yourself a bad dream 'cause you're under a lot of
stress right now, but let me tell you something. Nobody's gonna come between us,
not Hope, and certainly not Stefano DiMera.
Hope (as Gina): Prepare to die, Mr. and Mrs. John Black.
Julie: My pacemaker? But it's chugging along just fine as far as I can tell.
I--I feel great, Kayla.
Kayla: Well, good. I think you're right. I think it is working properly. It's
just that the battery is very low.
Julie: Already? That surgeon told me it would be years before we had to change
it.
Kayla: Well, it should be at least five years, and that's what's odd. For some
reason, yours is losing its charge.
Julie: Well, what are we gonna do about it, Kayla?
Kayla: I'm gonna call your cardiologist, and we're gonna figure it out, okay? I
have to be honest. I have never seen this before.
Eli: Lani? What are you talking about? What does she have to do with me marrying
Gabi?
JJ: After our conversation yesterday, do you have to ask?
Gabi: What conversation?
Kristen: So you told JJ everything? About Julie's pacemaker, about Gabi's little
gadget that makes it go boom?
Lani: Yes, and then he freaked out, no surprise there. Then he raced over to the
DiMera mansion before I could stop him. Kristen, he is gonna try to disable that
app.
Kristen: How--he doesn't know what he's doing.
Lani: I know. I tried to tell him that, but once he makes up his mind, there's--
Kristen: There's no stopping him, I know, I know. Oh, my God, so this is where I
come in, right?
Lani: Yes. Look, Kristen, I was hoping that you could go over there and create
some sort of distraction, or, God forbid, if he's been caught, give him a cover?
Kristen: Oh, God, Lani, you know that this--I am the last person that JJ's gonna
accept help from. What if--what if he tries to shoot me again? I'd prefer not to
wind up on the wrong end of the gun.
John: Mm. Busted.
Marlena: Oh, my God.
Steve (as Stefano): Well, we didn't scare you two lovebirds, did we?
John: Not a chance.
Marlena: You couldn't scare us. We just didn't hear your key in the lock.
Hope (as Gina): Well, that's because Steve didn't need to use it. You really
shouldn't leave your doors unlocked. Anyone could walk in.
Marlena: Like you.
Steve (as Stefano): Like Stefano DiMera.
John: You know, partner, I'm beginning to think all this business about Stefano
being here in town's a bunch of bull.
Hope (as Gina): You don't believe all the evidence?
John: What evidence? Nobody's seen the guy. He contacts Chad how, by text? Sends
Doc all these mysterious gifts with a card signed with an S. Then again no one
sees his face, right? And I don't put a lot of stock in Celeste and her psychic
ability, but she even said he wasn't here.
Steve (as Stefano): No. What she said was he was here, but he wasn't, and I'm
afraid that Hope and I are here with proof positive that she was right.
Hope (as Gina): Which is why I felt I had to do this.
Gabi: What--what conversation? I know that you two met last night, but what
exactly did you talk about?
JJ: Just different stuff, just life and--and love. I--I asked Eli if he was sure
his feelings for--for Lani were over.
Gabi: Of course he's--what are you talking about? Of course he's sure. Lani
dumped him at the altar and broke his heart.
Eli: That's exactly what I said.
JJ: Right, you did.
Gabi: You know, I don't understand. Eli and I, we've been together for over a
year, and in that time Lani left Salem, and she decided to marry God, okay?
Things have been over between them, so I don't understand why you're asking this
now.
JJ: I know. It's--it's been a long time. It's just when I saw Lani in Italy, it
became obvious to me that she wishes she could have made a different choice.
Gabi: Well, I'm sorry if she regrets becoming a nun.
JJ: Okay, look. I probably would have killed Kristen if Lani hadn't shown up and
talked me down. My life would be over right now if it wasn't for her, so I felt
like I owed it to her to at least tell Eli how--how Lani feels.
Gabi: Right. You know I saved your life too. You remember that? This is how
you're gonna thank me for that?
Eli: Gabi, you know, actually, you should--you should thank JJ.
Gabi: For what, babe?
Eli: Because he made me realize that Lani leaving me at the altar is in the
past, and he also made me realize how much I wanted to propose to you.
Lani: Kristen, you don't have to worry about JJ trying to shoot you. It's not
like he's gonna try that again.
Kristen: Can I get that in writing?
Lani: He was on drugs, out of his mind with grief, okay? But look, he went to
rehab, and he is on the mend.
Kristen: You know, for someone who's worried about Gabi retaliating, you took a
huge risk in telling JJ about what Gabi did.
Lani: I didn't mean to, okay? The last thing I wanted to do was to get JJ
involved, but ever since this whole thing started, I have just felt so alone. I
mean, everyone in Salem thinks that I am just this--this terrible person who
left Eli at the altar, but JJ, he has been so kind to me, and he keeps asking
about it, so just--it just slipped out.
Kristen: I see. I see. So JJ was the only person that you could confide in?
What, am I just chopped liver?
Lani: Kristen, you just said you wouldn't help me, and I have barely heard from
you.
Kristen: Okay, and I am sorry. It's just things have gotten a little busy. You
know, I started a new job at Basic Black, and my father--
Lani: W-- your father? What?
Kristen: He asked me for my shares.
Lani: So it's true. Stefano's back in town. Did you see him?
Kristen: Uh, well, in-- sort of.
Hope (as Gina): I had this registered in your name.
Marlena: Why?
Hope (as Gina): For your own protection, of course.
Marlena: Protection from Stefano?
Steve (as Stefano): Kristen told Abigail that her father came to visit her last
night.
John: Oh, hell, I don't believe a word Kristen says.
Hope (as Gina): Well, she also said that Stefano told her he was leaving the
country, which proved to be true. An ISA operative spotted Stefano in Prague
this morning.
John: Oh, come on, guys. Think about it. It doesn't make any sense here.
Kristen's in town. Chad is in town. Doc is here. Why would he leave now?
Steve (as Stefano): He's probably trying to get his ducks in a row before he comes
back to claim what is his.
Marlena: I'm not his, and I don't want your gun, and if Stefano comes anywhere
near me, which I doubt, John will help me.
Steve (as Stefano): No, Marlena. He won't.
Lani: You sort of saw your father? What does that mean?
Kristen: You don't want to know.
Lani: No, actually, that's all I want to know.
Kristen: The point is, is that I did not give him my shares because I'm using
all my leverage to help you with this.
Lani: And I appreciate that, Kristen, I really do. But if you want to help me,
you will go over to the mansion and make sure that JJ does not get caught with
Gabi's phone. Kristen, please. Look, I will never forgive myself if anything
happens to JJ.
Kristen: Okay, okay. Okay. But don't count on any miracles, hmm?
Gabi: Well, aren't you gonna congratulate us?
JJ: Congratulations.
Gabi: You could say it like you mean it. Hey, I thought we were okay, you know,
after our talk on Christmas Eve. I still care about you. You know that?
JJ: You never stop surprising me, Gabi.
Gabi: In a good way, I hope.
JJ: I came to see Abigail.
Gabi: She's not here.
JJ: That's--that's okay. I can wait.
Eli: Well, um, since you're here, um, there's something I wanted to ask you.
Since you're the one that prompted me to pop the question to Gabi, I was hoping
you'd be my best man.
JJ: Me?
Eli: You're family, right? [Cell phone rings] Sorry, I gotta take this call.
Give me one second.
Gabi: You know, this means a lot to Eli. I hope you say yes.
JJ: Do you love him?
Gabi: Of course. Of course I love him. Why else would I have accepted his
proposal?
JJ: Lani took your husband from you. Maybe you want to take the man who was
going to be hers.
Gabi: That's an awful thing to say.
JJ: Is it true?
Gabi: No.
JJ: So you really think we can all be one big, happy family?
Gabi: If you're talking about Abigail--
JJ: No, I'm talking about Julie, actually.
Julie: Oh, beg your pardon.
Abe: Oh, Julie, no, it's quite--quite all right.
Julie: Abe, how nice to see you. Dear, is something the matter?
Abe: Yeah, yeah, I'm afraid so. I just found out that Lani was back in town and
didn't bother to call me, and before I could track her down, she--she left just
as quickly as she came.
Julie: I know. That is, I saw sister Lani as she was leaving town.
Abe: I see.
Julie: Abe, please don't take this personally, but your daughter's history of
hurting the people she is supposed to care about the most, I'm afraid it was
just a matter of time before she hurt you too.
Abe: I know what you think of my daughter, Julie, and you have every right to be
angry with her about how badly she hurt Eli. I can't blame you for being
protective of your grandson. But I'm just as protective of my daughter. All--all
that matters to me is her wellbeing. I'm just terribly worried about her.
Julie: I understand. Believe me, I do, 'cause right now I feel the same way
about Hope.
Rafe: Hi. Is--
Kayla: Hi.
Rafe: Is Roman here, back in the kitchen?
Kayla: No, I'm sorry. He's--he's out.
Rafe: Damn.
Kayla: Is everything okay?
Rafe: No, actually, it's not. Uh, it's about Hope.
Kayla: Hope? What's going on?
Rafe: I probably shouldn't discuss it with you. It doesn't exactly paint her in
the best light.
Kayla: No, listen, you know, whatever it is, if it's about Hope, I wanna know.
Here, sit down.
Rafe: All right. Well, honestly, Hope's just--she's been acting very strange
lately. She's been sloppy at work, so I--I confronted her about it, and she
tried to fire me.
Kayla: She what?
Rafe: Yeah, she tried to fire me, so I went to her office to discuss it with
her, and it smelled like smoke, right, in her office, so I went, and I looked in
her desk drawer. I know I shouldn't have, but I did, and, um, I found these.
Kayla: Cigarettes?
Rafe: Yeah. Have you ever known Hope to smoke?
Kayla: No.
Rafe: No?
Kayla: No. Well, actually, there was this one time.
John: What are you talking about, partner? Of course I'll protect Doc. She's my
priority, always has been.
Steve (as Stefano): I don't doubt that, but what I meant was you can't protect Doc
because you won't be in Salem. I need you to come with me to Europe to help me
stop Stefano in his tracks.
John: Well, you know there's nothing more that I would like than that, but I
don't wanna leave Doc.
Marlena: You won't have to. I'll go with you.
John: All right then.
Hope (as Gina): You can't.
Gabi: Julie? Why did you mention her?
JJ: Well, she's a part of my family. She's going to be a part of yours now, and
you two are always at each other's throats.
Gabi: Not anymore. No, ever since I gave her Stefan's heart, we've been the best
of friends. I mean, you saw at the Christmas Eve party. You were there.
JJ: I know, and I know that, and I'm--and I'm glad you two are getting along
better these days. Hope it lasts.
Gabi: I think so.
JJ: So look, I don't--I don't want you keep you if you've got work or whatever
to do.
Kristen: Gabi, I brought some contracts that need your signature immediately.
JJ: Kristen.
Kristen: Hello, JJ.
JJ: I heard you were back in town. Oh, don't worry. I'm not gonna try to play
God and make you pay for what you did. I'm happy to leave that to the law.
Kristen: I appreciate that. Uh, I want you to know that I would do anything to
make up for what I did and for both of us to have our lives back the way they
were before that awful night. Just as much as I wish it, I know that can't
happen, and that's part of the reason why I came back to Salem, to face the
people that I've wronged and to do my very best to make amends.
JJ: Right.
Kristen: Uh, oh, dear.
Gabi: Is something wrong?
Kristen: Well, I must have left the contracts at the office. You know, you're
gonna have to come with me.
Gabi: I'm--I'm celebrating an engagement to Eli.
Kristen: Oh, well, congrats, I guess, but I'm sorry. This can't wait.
Gabi: [Scoffs]
Julie: You see, Kayla has warned me to avoid stress for the sake of my health,
but recently I cannot help but be upset about Hope's behavior.
Abe: Well, I'd say that's good advice.
Julie: Well, how she could have just brought Steve back to Salem without giving
Kayla some warning, it's just so insensitive.
Abe: Well, I get the feeling that Kayla's not the only one Hope's been
insensitive to.
Julie: Well, I was surprised when she turned down Doug's and my offer to move in
with us and insisted on staying with John and Marlena, and... I was hurt. I know
I'm not the easiest person in the world to live with. And in the past when she
was a teenager, we did have our moments. But, Abe, she's become so distant.
Abe: You know, I spoke to Rafe a little earlier. Suffice it to say I don't think
you're the only one that--that is concerned about Hope.
Rafe: So you've seen Hope smoke?
Kayla: Well, no, not exactly, but, you know, a couple of months ago I had this
patient who tried to sneak some cigarettes into the hospital. I mean, he was on
oxygen, no less.
Rafe: Oh, great.
Kayla: So I confiscated the cigarettes, of course.
Rafe: Yeah.
Kayla: And then I came here, and I told Roman and Hope the whole story about how
this patient almost blew the hospital to kingdom come.
Rafe: Well, I suppose that's a day you wouldn't forget.
Kayla: Right, but, you know, there was something weird about it. I--I set the
cigarettes on the table, and then when I went to leave later, they--they weren't
there.
Rafe: So maybe a customer picked them up.
Kayla: No, no, no, that--no, 'cause it was only Roman and Hope, and at the time
I thought--of course, it didn't even occur to me that she could have taken them
because she doesn't smoke. But now in hindsight, maybe that's not such a
ludicrous idea.
Rafe: Well, I know Hope's been under a lot of stress lately, but I find it hard
to believe she would start smoking.
Kayla: You know, I've been hearing all kinds of things that are hard to believe
about Hope.
Rafe: What do you mean?
Kayla: Well, I don't-- I don't wanna gossip.
Rafe: Did we not just agree we were talking about someone we care about?
Kayla: Okay. Marlena told me that when she was staying with them, she made a
pass at John.
Rafe: She what?
Marlena: Excuse me? Are you trying to tell me when and if I can leave Salem with
my husband?
Hope (as Gina): No, of course not. Marlena, I am just trying to protect you. We
are all so familiar with Stefano's sick, inexplicable obsession with you. Why
would you run straight into that danger?
John: Sweetheart, you know how much I hate the idea of being away from you, but
I think she's right. I trust you guys. You've both spent most of your life
battling Stefano. You know his playbook inside and out. If anybody can predict
his next move, it's you two.
Hope (as Gina): True.
Steve (as Stefano): You've got that right. And we have a strong lead on his
whereabouts, so we need to jump on it now.
John: Old man DiMera is wanted for international crimes, Doc. This could be our
one chance to put him away for the rest of his unnatural life. All right,
partner, let's--let's strike. I'll throw some clothes together, and we'll be
ready to roll.
Marlena: I'll go with you.
Hope (as Gina): Dear God, they are terribly codependent. For a moment there I
thought we were going to have to fall back on plan a, killing Marlena.
Steve (as Stefano): No one is dying. Remember the plan.
Hope (as Gina): Yes, yes, I shall. This must work.
Steve (as Stefano): You need to have patience. Good things come to those who wait.
When this is all over, Marlena will think John is dead. John will think Marlena
is dead, and we will both have exactly what we want.
Julie: I had no idea that Hope's erratic behavior had spilled over to her work.
But she has been distracted for quite a while now.
Abe: Yeah, Hope has had a traumatic year, what with your surgery and her
divorce, her house being flooded. Julie, please don't mention to Hope what we've
been talking about.
Julie: No, no, of course not.
Abe: So I'm sorry if I have upset you.
Julie: No, dear, I'm no fragile flower. As a matter of fact, I was just coming
back from seeing Kayla for a checkup. She gave me a clean bill of health.
Abe: Well, that's good news.
Julie: Yes, it is. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my pacemaker.
Gabi: JJ, should I ask Harold to bring your car around?
JJ: Uh, it's okay. I can wait for Abigail here, if--if you don't mind.
Gabi: No, that's okay.
Kristen: Okay, we gotta get a move on already. We're up against a hard deadline
to, uh, finalize this deal.
JJ: Password. Ari's birthday? [Phone chimes] Yes. I'm in. Radio waves detected?
Must be an alert for the app that Lani was talking about. Bingo. Here we go.
Lani: Oh, I wish that there was something that I can do, but I'm stuck in this
apartment away from everyone that I love. [Sighs]
[Phone beeps]
[Line trilling]
[Phone rings]
[Phone beeps]
Abe: Lani?
Lani: Hi, Dad.
Abe: Oh, honey, I'm so glad you finally called me back.
Lani: I am so sorry that I hung up on you earlier, and I'm--I'm so sorry that
I--I didn't see you before I left town. And, Dad, I'm just--I'm really sorry
about so many things.
Abe: Well, I do appreciate that, honey, but I don't want your apology. I want
the truth, Lani. I want you to explain what's going on with you.
Lani: Nothing. I just--I realized coming back to Salem was a terrible mistake.
Hope (as Gina): We have gone about this completely backwards. Well, we simply
should have kidnapped John and Marlena from the beginning and taken them to
Europe in the first place.
Steve (as Stefano): Oh, and had every law enforcement agency on the planet after
us? Spent our lives looking over our shoulders? No. This was much cleaner. Soon
John will belong to you and only you, and Marlena will belong to me and only me,
all right?
Marlena: And you might need this.
John: Sweetheart, you don't have to help me. I know you have a lot to do today.
Marlena: I am not going anywhere until I see you safely on your way.
John: Baby, I understand that you're worried right now.
Marlena: Of course I'm worried. Look, we know that Stefano has been obsessed
with me for years, but we also know he would never lift a finger to hurt me.
John: [Groans]
Marlena: But you, you spent years as his pawn.
John: Stefano was a much younger man back then. Now he's old and infirm. He's no
match for Steve and me. One way or another... [Gun magazine clicking] I'm gonna
make sure Stefano never comes back to Salem again.
John: Okay, Doc, Abe and Roman are gonna keep an eye on you while I'm gone.
Marlena: Yeah. I would still feel better if I were with you.
John: Well, I wouldn't, because Stefano's there, and you have patients who need
you here.
Marlena: Well, maybe you need me more.
John: I'm always gonna need you more, but, you know, I think I have the next
best thing in my buddy Steve. We've been partners for a lot of years, and I
don't trust anybody any more than him to have my back.
Steve (as Stefano): I need you to promise me you won't do anything stupid while
I'm away.
Hope (as Gina): Me? You are the one who went parading around town dressed up as
Santa, sending Marlena gifts, flowers, visiting Kristen.
Steve (as Stefano): You've been so preoccupied with John Black, you've fallen down
on the job of covering our tracks. Detective Hernandez is suspicious now, all
because of your grievous errors.
Hope (as Gina): Oh, you're so dramatic. I would hardly call them grievous. You
cannot seriously be concerned with Rafe. If the good detective gets in our way
and causes trouble, well, then, you know, he is easily dispensed with.
Steve (as Stefano): I like how you think.
Rafe: Hope made a pass at John?
Kayla: I know. It sounds crazy, doesn't it?
Rafe: Yeah.
Kayla: But apparently she admitted it and apologized to John. I don't know.
Maybe she was vulnerable and lonely since the two of you were divorced.
Rafe: Well, I don't care how vulnerable or lonely she was. Like, this does not
sound like the Hope that I know. This is serious.
JJ: "Password required"? Another one? Let's try Ari's birthday again. [Phone
buzzes] Gabi's birthday. [Phone buzzes] What's Rafe's birthday? [Phone buzzes]
Dammit. Still nothing.
[Camera shutter clicks]
Eli: What are you doing?
JJ: Just about to leave Abigail a note. I decided not to wait after all, but I'm
just gonna text her.
Eli: Hey, hey. Wait a minute.
Abe: Lani, why do you think coming back to town was a mistake?
Lani: Because, Dad, I--I know that Eli is with Gabi, and the last thing that I
want to do is get in the way of that, you know? Eli deserves to be happy, and
right now seeing me only upsets him.
Abe: Where are you? Did you go back to that convent in Italy?
Lani: Dad, please don't come looking for me.
Abe: Lani, I'm worried about you, and I-- I miss you terribly. Can you at least
please tell me when I'm going to see you again?
Lani: It won't be long, I promise, okay? This won't go on forever. And someday I
pray that I will be able to come home and just give everyone the answers that
they need.
Gabi: Where are these contracts? I can't believe you forgot the one thing you
were supposed to bring to the house.
Kristen: Well, actually, I didn't forget. The contract fell through.
Gabi: What? Well, then what the hell am I doing over here?
Kristen: Well, I needed to speak with you in private. I couldn't risk Chad
overhearing at the mansion.
Gabi: I can't believe this. So this was all a ruse?
Kristen: Just stop being so melodramatic and listen. My father reached out to me
directly. He wanted me to sell him my DiMera shares.
Gabi: And?
Kristen: And I refused. As much as he might pressure me, I ultimately would like
to turn them over to you.
Gabi: When?
Kristen: When I get what I want. You have Eli's ring on your finger, don't you?
As soon as I have
Brady's on mine, you will be richly rewarded.
JJ: What is it?
Eli: You never answered my question. Will you be my best man?
JJ: Oh, um... I'm flattered, but, uh, you didn't want to ask Rafe?
Eli: Full disclosure. I did. He's already walking Gabi down the aisle.
JJ: Mm. So I'm your second choice, and I ruined your proposal celebration, so--
Eli: JJ, hey, in all seriousness, it would mean a lot to me and Gabi to know
that we have your full support.
JJ: All right, sure. If that's what--if that's what you want, I'll do it.
Eli: Thanks a lot.
Rafe: Don't you think it's possible that Hope's behavior is a sign of some sort
of medical or psychiatric problem?
Kayla: Well, I suppose, but the issues she's having aren't any symptoms of an
illness I can think of.
Rafe: Well, all right. Well, then, I guess I'll just have to do more
investigating. I would suggest that we keep this between ourselves.
Kayla: Of course.
Rafe: Yeah.
Kayla: But--but keep me posted, okay?
Rafe: I will.
Kayla: All right, bye. I'll see you later then.
Rafe: Okay.
Kayla: Yeah, buh-bye.
Rafe: Thanks. [Phone beeps] [Line trilling] Hey, it's me. I need your help.
Hope (as Gina): Good luck.
Marlena: Please be careful.
John: Always. I love you, Doc.
Steve (as Stefano): [Clapping] All right. Time to get the show on the road, huh?
John: I'll call you as soon as I land, okay?
Marlena: Please do that.
John: Let's go.
Hope (as Gina): Good luck.
Marlena: No matter how much he reassures me, I still worry. There's a lot at
stake here.
Hope (as Gina): Yes, there is, but John's right. It's gonna be fine. And in the
meantime, I'm--I'm gonna make sure that you're well taken care of, Marlena.
