Episode #13601 ~ Kayla relays heartbreaking news about Julie's condition to Hope and Eli. Lani reams out Gabi for leaving Julie to die. Eric and Vivian find themselves in a dangerous situation. Doug and Ciara sit vigil by Julie's side.

Lani: Went that well, huh?

Eli: That woman, I-- you know, it's like she lives-- she lives to provoke people.

Lani: I take it you're referring to melinda trask?

Eli: I get it, all right? Sh--she's ticked off because mayor deveraux went over her head to get kristen immunity, but why rake me over the coals?

Lani: Because the first rule of politics is when something goes wrong, blame it on someone else.

Eli: Then blame our dumbass mayor. He's the one that's responsible.

Lani: The mayor can fire her. You have to take what she shovels out.

Eli: [Exhales] You know what made it worse?

Lani: You couldn't stand her in the first place?

Eli: I think she's right. She said that the salem pd better be ready for whatever the hell kristen's gonna do next. That if you give a sociopath with control issues immunity, you better be prepared for the consequences.

Lani: Yeah, uh, I don't see kristen seeing the errors of her ways anytime soon. Oh, god.

Eli: What?

Lani: The engagement party that your grandmother wants to throw us. Eli, that's everyone that kristen hates in one place.

Eli: You think you can smudge a place against future chaos?

Lani: We can try. Have you talked to your grandmother since our little chat?

Eli: No, and I'm still worried that we went too hard on her.

Lani: I don't think we were. I mean, even if she was hurt initially, I honestly think that she was grateful that we sort of raised her consciousness. Made her aware that sometimes, a thing that she says can be misconstrued. And she said she wanted to do better, right?

Eli: Yeah, yeah, she did.

Lani: Yeah. Look, your grandma can be really harsh at times. But I've also seen the compassionate, kind side of her. She has a really good heart.

Kayla: I need you to brace yourselves. I have some bad news. Julie's condition is very serious.

Hope: Ciara said that she had a heart attack.

Kayla: Yes, and thank god she survived. But there's been some significant damage.

Doug: Damage. But you can fix that, right? Right?

Kayla: I'm sorry, doug. I can't promise anything.

[Soft music]

Stefan: Ciara's in the hospital?

Gabi: What's wrong?

Ben: She's fine. It's her grandmother, julie. She had a massive heart attack.

Gabi: Julie had a heart attack? No, no, no, no, no, no. She--no, she just-- she just wanted attention. She's done this before. She's fine.

Ben: She's fine? Ciara and I found her unconscious on the ground near the square. I gave her cpr while ciara called 911. The emt said if we didn't find her when we did, she could have died there.

Stefan: Okay, guys, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need you to get to chicago. I want my mother back here asap.

Ben: Right.

Stefan: Remember, you can't say anything to anyone about her being alive.

Gabi: Oh, my god. She wasn't faking it. What have I done?

Eric: Nicole and holly are my only concern. If you won't help me find them, I'll find them myself.

[Gun cocks]

Walter: You don't need to worry about nicole walker because your search ends here and now.

[Dramatic music]

Eric: I'll never stop looking for them. I'll bring them home if it's the last thing that I do.

Walter: I don't think the shining knight on a quest thing is gonna work out so good for you. Like, if I was only working for kristen dimera, a woman with a taste for young men, I might have you washed and sent to her tent. My other boss, all business. No, I really think I gotta kill you.

Eli: I agree, you're right. My grandmother does have a good heart. And because I love you, she loves you. Whether you like it or not.

Lani: Well, I like it a whole lot. I think she's terrific. She's strong. Strong with opinions.

Eli: Yeah, something you both have in common. She doesn't back down from a challenge, and neither do you.

[Tender music]

Lani: [Laughs]

Eli: Um, what--what time are you off?

Lani: I was off a while ago. I was just doing some paperwork, waiting for you.

Eli: Come here. What do you say we go home and have a romantic evening?

Lani: Oh.

[Laughs]

Eli: Yes.

Lani: That sounds perfect. Oh, my god.

Eli: What?

Lani: Uh, ciara, she-- she couldn't reach you, so she messaged me.

Eli: She messaged you about what?

Lani: Oh, my god, eli. Your grandmother had a heart attack, and sh--she's in the hospital.

Eli: W-what? Oh, my god!

Hope: Ciara, would you please get grandpa some water?

Ciara: Yeah, of course.

[Phone ringing] Hello?

Ben: Hey, how's julie doing?

Ciara: It's not good.

Ben: I-I... ciara, I'm so sorry. Listen, stefan has a job for me, but I'll tell him to get somebody else.

Ciara: Um, ben, I think it's--I think it's just family right now.

Ben: I'm just worried about you. You gonna be okay?

Ciara: I'm gonna be strong for my mom and my grandpa. And I know I'll have you for when I finally do fall apart.

Ben: Just promise you will call me if you change your mind. I'll be right there.

Ciara: I promise. I love you.

Ben: I love you too.

[Phone beeps]

Gabi: I really thought she was faking it. She's faked before. Everyone thinks she's a drama queen, a phony. You know, she's always looking at people with that spiteful look in her eye. These evil eyes like she's gonna say something cruel and mean.

Stefan: How do you really feel about her, gabi?

Gabi: I'm sorry, I swear I didn't know she was having a real heart attack.

Stefan: So you've been saying.

Gabi: Oh, I'm sorry. Am I boring you? I-I'm in agony here. Could you please, something-- just say something like you believe me? Something comforting?

Stefan: Of course I believe you. And even if I didn't, I would be on your side.

Gabi: What do you mean, even if you didn't? Are you saying you believe me because you love me, or because you really know I would never leave somebody there to die gasping for breath?

Stefan: I-- she was gasping for breath?

Gabi: Yes.

Stefan: You left her gasping for breath?

Gabi: No, no, no-- I don't remember. That's not the point, okay? The point is I thought she was faking and she wanted to scare me, and I was not gonna let her scare me, okay? Why are you looking at me like I'm some heartless monster?

Stefan: I don't think, gabi--

Gabi: No, no. I need to find out, okay? I need--I need to know.

Doug: Kayla, tell me. Tell me what is wrong with julie and tell me why you can't fix it.

Kayla: Doug, we just-- we just don't know what else we can do for her.

Doug: She has check-ups. She is healthy.

Hope: Daddy.

Kayla: I know, but like I said, there's been some damage.

Doug: Are you trying to tell me that julie is going to die?

Eric: You got two bosses. How about a third? You're obviously doing it for the money.

Walter: No, I'm doing research for my novel.

Eric: Whatever they're paying you, I'll double it.

Walter: [Laughs] Sorry. My professional ethics preclude me from welching on a deal. Which means you end up dead.

Vivian: Wait! You cannot do this.

Eric: You lied, vivian. You're his boss, aren't you?

Walter: Wrong again.

Vivian: I'm not his boss. I just loathe gore.

Gabi: I just wanted to know um, if she's okay. We are family. I was married to her cousin, nick. What do you mean, that gabi hernandez? She wouldn't tell me anything! Oh, it turns out she was around when nick was shot.

Stefan: You know, using the passive voice doesn't change the fact that you're the one who shot him.

Gabi: I don't need reminding, okay? Yes, I shot my abusive, blackmailing ex-husband, and julie is acting like I shot st. Francis of assisi.

Stefan: Why do you care what happens to her now?

Gabi: If she dies, it's my fault.

Eli: Hey, hey, how is she?

Hope: Kayla was just telling us that there's been significant damage to her heart.

Doug: I-I-- I don't want to hear it again. I gotta go to her.

Kayla: Okay, that's--

Doug: I don't want her to be alone.

Kayla: That's fine, but just keep her calm, okay?

Hope: Honey, go, uh, make sure he's okay. Take care of him, okay? I'll talk to kayla.

Eli: Lani, you go too. I want to talk to kayla as well. And tell my grandma I'll be right there.

Kayla: We can have some privacy in here. Eli, I was telling the others that julie's heart is damaged and it's serious.

Eli: Well, how do you treat it? Does she need medication?

Kayla: I'm afraid that medication won't work. Her heart isn't strong enough to pump the blood she needs to the other parts of her body.

Hope: You're saying she needs a new heart.

Kayla: That's right.

Eli: So put her on the transplant list.

Kayla: I'm afraid it's not an option.

[Somber music]

Doug: It's like, all these machines are the only thing that's keeping her alive.

Ciara: Oh, shh, grandpa. She might be able to hear us and we have to keep her calm.

Doug: Okay, okay, okay. I'm here, darling. It's me. I know you're always telling me that I don't have to turn my phone off after every phone call, but I'm getting better about that. Now, I left my phone up in the office at the club. I don't know what I'm gonna do with it.

Julie: It's okay. You're here now.

Doug: Yes, I am. And kayla is taking good care of you, and lani's here, and ciara's here, and hope and eli are gonna be here in a second.

Julie: Doug...

[Melancholy music]

I'm so scared.

Doug: You hate that, don't you?

Julie: I hate being here, lying here.

Doug: I know, I know. But you're going to... you're going to, for the first time in your life, you are going to do as you're told so you can come home and get better, and so you-- to boss me around again.

Julie: I love you so, darling.

Doug: Right back at you, kid. I don't want her to see me crying.

Lani: Okay, I'll stay with her.

Doug: Okay, thanks.

Lani: Hi, julie.

Julie: Hi.

Lani: I just want to say thank you. Thank you for accepting me into your family. And for wanting to throw eli and me an engagement party. It's so kind of you. And I know we've been giving you a really hard time about the bad vibes and negative energy, but it's fine. Doug's place is--is perfect, and we don't have to sage it anymore. And honestly, I-I know that we were giving you a really hard time about gabi and calling--

Julie: That was... that was...

Lani: That was what? What are you saying?

Julie: Gabi.

Lani: What about gabi?

Julie: She was there. She was there. And she left me to die.

Stefan: She's not going to die. It sounds like they got there just in time. Look, you didn't cause her to have a heart attack. It's not your fault.

Gabi: I didn't do anything. I walked away, okay? I need to make sure she's okay.

Stefan: You know, I'm not sure julie's family is gonna be thrilled to see you.

Gabi: Okay, well, I have to go. I'm going.

Stefan: Then I'm going with you.

Gabi: You have to wait until ben brings your mother back.

Stefan: It could be hours before they're back. I don't want you doing this alone.

Gabi: Are you sure?

Stefan: Yes, I'm sure. I'm sure ben will call if there are any problems.

Gabi: Okay.

Vivian: You can't kill me. Don't you know who I am?

Walter: I sure know what you are, a royal pain in the neck.

Vivian: I am stefan dimera's mother. Stefano dimera was his father. I can assure you, he is not somebody you want to mess with.

Walter: I'm scared.

Vivian: Ha, you should be. Because I was just in contact with him, and he, any minute, will be coming through those doors. And if he sees that you have harmed me, oh, your life won't be worth living. So, darling, just put down the gun and leave us alone.

Walter: Oh, stefan dimera is on his way.

Vivian: Oh, yes, he is.

Walter: And you expect me to believe that just 'cause you say so?

Vivian: It is the truth.

Walter: Well, if it is, I better finish you two off fast and be on my merry way before the cavalry gets here.

Eric: Whoa, wait.

Walter: Oh, so chivalry ain't dead. But you are.

Ben: [Grunting]

Walter: [Struggling]

[Gunshot fires]

Lani: Are you sure about this?

Julie: She was there in the park. I begged her to help. She laughed. She laughed. And stepped over me and walked away. She left me to die.

Lani: Okay, okay, julie. You need to try to get some rest, okay? Try to sleep.

Julie: Mm-hmm.

Lani: You're okay now. You're safe.

Doug: Thanks for staying with her.

Lani: I'm glad I did, but now that you're here, there's something that I need to do and take care of.

Doug: Oh. Okay.

Lani: She's a wonderful woman.

Doug: She is the best.

[Soft music]

Hope: No, just wait a second. I don't understand. I know it takes time to find a donor, but-- can't you keep her alive until then?

Kayla: I'm sorry, but the fact is a transplant isn't an option. You can't even get on the heart transplant list unless you are under 70 years old.

Eli: But she's in great shape. All right, she's active. She's still working.

Kayla: I know that, I know that, but statistically, the survival rate for people over 70 goes considerably down. And there are so many people that need transplants, and there is a limited number of hearts available. So the people with the best chance of living the longest go to the top of the list.

Hope: Without a new heart, she'll die. Julie will die. It's just a matter of when.

Kayla: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I wish that I could reassure you, I do, but... I'm sorry.

Hope: Oh, my... oh, my god.

Gabi: How's julie?

Lani: Why do you care?

Gabi: What?

Lani: I know what you did, gabi. I know you stood there and watched julie have that heart attack. And then you just left her there to die.

Hope: How long? How much time does she have?

Kayla: I can't really say, but maybe weeks.

Eli: Or days.

Kayla: I am so sorry.

Hope: My dad can't handle this tonight, and we don't want julie giving up hope.

Kayla: Of course not.

Hope: Thank you for being honest. I know it wasn't easy. I want to go be with julie. I'm gonna go. I'll see you there. Good luck.

[Melancholy music]

[Medical device beeping]

Doug: Did I ever tell you about the time I pretended to die--that I was dying to win her back?

Ciara: [Laughs] No, grandpa. Actually, not for a while. And you know what? I would love to hear it again.

Doug: We'll, we'd split up. My bad. And... and it didn't take me very long to figure out that I just could not live without her.

Gabi: That is not what happened.

Lani: So she's lying. She didn't beg for your help? You didn't laugh, walk over her, and just go away?

Gabi: Yeah, I did. But I didn't laugh.

Lani: A woman is in terrible distress, lying on the ground begging for help, and there's a "but."

Stefan: The "but" is that gabi thought she was faking again. Isn't there an aesop's fable? "The old crone who cried coronary arrest."

Lani: You think this is funny?

Gabi: No, it's not funny, okay? It's horrible. And when I found out that it was real, that she was in the hospital, I came right down.

Lani: Yeah, because you are exactly who she wants to see. She was just asking for you. "Where's my girl, gabi, at?"

Gabi: If I'd known it was real, I would have done something.

Lani: That is bull. Julie called you out on what you did to abigail. And while you have no problem with driving a human being mad and arranging for an innocent child to be separated from her parents and handed to this sociopath, you didn't like the fact that julie was pointing out that you are a lying, scheming--

Stefan: Okay, she doesn't need to hear this.

Gabi: You're right, I don'T.

Lani: Tonight was a second chance, wasn't it? You've wanted julie dead all along. Ever since she came back from that fall down the stairs. And this heart attack was an answer to your prayer. Your fondest dreams just handed to you on a platter. To kill julie-- and you know what, gabi? All you had to do was walk away. You didn't even have to shove her down the stairs this time.

[Dramatic music]

Vivian: I know that we're not supposed to speak ill of the dead, but that man was really tedious, arrogant, pleased with himself. He is dead, isn't he?

Eric: Yeah, he's dead. The only man who knows where nicole and holly are is dead.

Ben: No, there's no way kristen's gonna show up and risk her immunity at a crime scene.

Eric: Yeah, well, he obviously had another boss. Now we're never gonna know who that is either.

Vivian: Remind me not to save your life, 'cause you get really petulant. Thank you, young man. Sincerely, I really did not want to go through that whole getting shot lazarus thing again.

Ben: Eric, what do you got?

Eric: Got a phone. It's locked.

Doug: And she came to switzerland.

Ciara: [Laughs]

Doug: And you'll be surprised to know this. She had some very choice words for me when she found out that I'd been faking it.

[Laughter]

Ciara: Oh, man, so, you mean to tell me that grandma julie actually managed to express an opinion?

Doug: Somehow, she...

Julie: Sophomoric.

Doug: That's exactly the word you used. One of the words. One of the torrent of words.

Julie: Love makes you foolish. I knew you so well. I knew all your tricks. And still, I married you again.

Doug: And we lived happily ever after.

Julie: Ain't love grand?

Doug: Yeah.

[Door creaks open]

Hope: Julie. Really? This is how you get our attention? What, the sales weren't good enough?

Julie: Honey, honey.

Eli.

Eli: Hey. I love you. And I'm sorry if you were upset about the discussion that lani and I had with you earlier.

Julie: Don't you worry. Don't you worry. I'm glad you told me. I can take it. I'm tough, you know.

Eli: I know. We all do.

Julie: It's gonna take more than a heart attack to take me away from my beautiful family. I'm gonna be here. Gonna be with you for a long... long time.

[Soft music]

Stefan: You don't get to talk to her like that.

Lani: Oh, you think I'm tarnishing her good name?

Gabi: I didn't kill the old bag, okay?

Lani: No? Did you or did you not threaten to shut her mouth for good? Julie told eli and i what you said. You know, it's funny, because we were actually telling her that she shouldn't call you names anymore. But calling someone names is nothing compared to the things you've done. Gabi, you left an elderly woman lying on the ground fighting for her life. If julie dies, you will have killed her.

Stefan: Stop. Leave her alone.

Lani: He's your hero, right? You sure do know how to pick them.

Stefan: Okay, lady, you are this close to a lawsuit.

Lani: I'm done anyway. But listen here. When you're drifting off to sleep tonight, I want you to think about julie lying on that ground as wave after wave of excruciating pain washes over her. And she's all alone. Sweet dreams, gabi.

Gabi: [Laughs]

Stefan: Okay, we're leaving. Let's go.

[Dramatic music]

Hmm. Exactly.

Gabi: It's not true, okay? It's not true. I never wanted to hurt julie. I thought she was faking it. Stefan, I am not a bad person.

Stefan: I know that.

Gabi: And then lani. You know, the way that she was looking at me.

Stefan: Yeah, she was having the time of her life wallowing in moral superiority.

Gabi: You're right. It was like she was enjoying making me feel like the scum of the earth.

Stefan: Hey, you can't let this get to you. You gotta let it roll off your back.

Gabi: She's gonna tell everybody. She's probably gonna put it in skywriting. "Heartless gabi hernandez leaves a woman to die!" She's--everyone's gonna think I'm a horrible person, stefan.

Stefan: Honey, they already do. Hey, but I don'T. Look, at the very worst, you made a mistake in judgment. And you had every reason to believe that that old bag was faking it.

Gabi: Just stop talking about her like that, please.

Stefan: Oh, what, so now she's saint julie?

Gabi: It's not funny, okay? None of this is funny. Stop.

Stefan: Look, hey. You need to relax, all right? Look, I believe you, okay? I know you wouldn't just leave a poor old woman to die. You would never do that. I believe you.

[Soft music]

Julie: When can I go home?

Hope: When kayla says you can. Unfortunately, that's not going to be tonight, though. Why don't you try to get a little sleep, okay?

Julie: I don't have to try. They gave me something. Wowee.

[Laughter]

Ciara: Um, mama, I'm gonna go let everyone know that grandma julie's okay.

Hope: All right, sweetheart.

Ciara: I love you.

Hope: I love you, baby.

Eli: Where were you? Something wrong?

Lani: Nothing you need to worry about.

Ciara: Hey, aunt kayla.

Kayla: Hi.

Ciara: So, uh, grandma julie seems to be a lot better. I think she likes being the center of attention.

Kayla: I think it runs in the family.

Ciara: Right, right. The hortons aren't shy and retiring like the bradys. And god help me, I am both.

Kayla: [Laughs] Oh, you know, I've been meaning to tell you that the emt told me that if it wasn't for ben, julie wouldn't have made it.

Ciara: He saved her life.

[Phone beeps]

Stefan: You have my mother?

Ben: Yeah. Yeah, hey, listen, things were pretty dicey when I got here, but everything's under control.

Stefan: She's all right?

Ben: Yeah. She seems fine to me. Listen, we gotta clear up a couple things, so I'm gonna let you know when we're gonna be on our way back. It should be pretty soon.

Stefan: What happened?

Ben: Not on the phone. I'll call you when I know we're getting there.

[Phone beeps] Any luck with the phone?

Eric: No.

Vivian: Give it to me.

Eric: Like that's gonna happen.

Vivian: Do you have to be so unpleasant? I mean, you-- you stepped in front of me when I was about to be shot. I am trying to return the favor. Come on, fella. I'm very good at opening things that are locked. There. Okay, let's start with the obvious. Uh-huh. Uh-huh, uh-huh.

Eric: What happened to your ptsd?

Vivian: Luckily, seems to only apply when it's my blood. Here we go.
