Episode #13530 ~ The mayoral election results are announced, and there is a surprising winner. Hope is fired. Ciara comforts a devastated Claire. Melinda drops a bombshell on Haley.

[Knock on door]

Ted: Hey. Just wanted to let you know that ICE is here to escort haley chen to the airport for deportation. I'm sorry, hope. I know you were hoping for a different outcome.

Hope: I was.

Ted: You okay?

Hope: Rafe and I are getting divorced.

Ted: I'm sorry, hope.

Hope: No, you're not. You're not.

Jennifer: The results are in. They called a winner. Okay...

Abe: Well... it's not really the news I was hoping for.

Eve: We did it. You won!

Jack: I-I won? I won? You wouldn't be joking with me--

Eve: Oh, no, I'm looking at salem's new mayor.

Jack: Ha!

Eve: Congratulations!

Jack: Oh! Oh, yes!

[Both laughing]

Claire: I can't believe tripp just threw me away like that. I was only trying to protect him...from the stupid bitch haley. But you know, of course, right, of course he had to be the hero, right? He had to save the poor, sweet, sad little immigrant who just happened to need a husband. Oh, and now somehow I'm the bad guy. Right? How does that work? How does that work? What about my feelings, right? What about my life?! Aah!

[Shattering] Oh, my god! Oh!

Ciara: Claire? What are you doing? Claire, stop.

Claire: Oh, I'm just getting started, so unless you wanna get hurt, you better get the hell out!

Laverne: I've seen some desperate moves before, but this is a first.

Jj: Agent smith, let her speak.

Haley: Melinda, what--what are you doing?

Laverne: She's obviously lying to try and save you. But it's too late, ms. Trask. Your sister is going back to china tonight.

Melinda: She's not my sister. And I'm not lying. It's true, haley. I'm your mother. Re, no, no, no, stop it, stop it--

Ciara: Claire. Claire, no, no, no, stop it, stop it--

Claire: Stop! Get the hell off of me!

Ciara: Claire! Oh, my gosh, okay, I--look at me. Okay, i don't know what's going on with you right now--I have no idea-- but you have got to calm down.

Claire: No, you don't understand! None of this is right, what's happening to me, none of it. It's not fair.

Ciara: Okay. Okay, sweetie, well, you can tell me all about it, but you've gotta stop destroying the house. Okay? You know how much those figurines mean to maggie.

[Whispers] Now, come on.

Claire: What are you doing here?

Ciara: I came to see my grandpa. I just didn't know I was gonna walk in on the purge.

Claire: [Softly] Yeah. Um...oh, god. I don't know, I-I just, um... lost control for a second.

Ciara: [Laughs] Yeah. Yeah, I'd definitely say so. Okay, claire, what's wrong?

Claire: Everything.

[Sniffles] Oh, god, everything is wrong.

Ciara: Okay. Well, you've gotta be a little bit more specific if you want my help.

Claire: Well, tripp just dumped me. Said that he thinks I'm an awful person. And it's all because of that stupid fake wife of his. Now I've lost him forever.

Ciara: Oh, sweetie, I'm sorry.

[Somber music]

Haley: What--I-I-I don't-- I don't understand. What do you mean, you're my mother?

Melinda: It's the truth, haley. I thought we would go through your whole life without you ever finding out, but...you're... you're my daughter, haley.

Haley: No. No. No. How?

Melinda: It's a long story.

Laverne: Which we don't have time for. Your sister or daughter or whoever she is has a plane to catch.

Jj: For god's sake, agent smith, will you give them a minute to sort this out? What could it possibly hurt?

Laverne: Fine. I have to call the pilot anyway. Make it fast.

[Door closes]

Haley: What the hell is this, melinda? What are you trying to tell me?

Melinda: I don't even know where to begin.

Haley: How 'bout the beginning?

Hope: You've been wanting me to leave rafe. So for you to suddenly say that you're sorry sounds very disingenuous, ted.

Ted: Hope, I can understand why you would feel that way. But I can see that you're in pain, and I take no pleasure in that. But to tell the truth... I believe your marriage with rafe was causing you even more pain.

Hope: Stop. Don't-- I don't want to talk about my marriage with you.

Ted: Of course. We don't have to talk about your marriage. What I'm trying to say to you is that no matter how much it hurts now...you can finally begin to heal. All I want for you is to be happy. No one deserves it more.

Jennifer: Abe, I am so sorry. You deserved to win this.

Abe: Well... since when does "deserved" matter in this world?

Jennifer: What are you doing here? You should be with your campaign staff.

Abe: I was on my way to what was supposed to be my victory party when I got the results. So I thought I'd stop in here and get a little shot of courage before I had to give my concession speech.

[Beep beep] Oh, 'scuse me. Well, the results are in. The county clerk has called the race for jack. And even without the absentee and provisional ballots counted, it's over. So the only thing left is for me to call my opponent and concede.

Jack: That is fantastic news! Tell the troops--y-yes. Tell the troops that we'll be joining them at the victory party as--as soon as we can get there. Yes, thank you!

[Beep] The county clerk just called it. Officially, you're looking at the mayor elect.

Eve: Oh, and I love what i see. Oh, jack, you did it. You did it! All that hard work--

Jack: All your hard work. You believed in me from day one.

[Both laughing]

Eve: We believed in each other.

[Both laughing]

[Phone rings]

Jack: Oh.

[Ringing] It's abe.

Eve: He's calling to concede. All right, jack, enjoy your moment, mr. Mayor. Do it!

Jack: [Ahem]

[Beep]

[Inhales] Abe.

Abe: Hello, jack. I'll get right to it.

Jack: All right.

Abe: Well, the voters have apparently spoken, and I have no choice but to concede the race.

Jack: Well, that's very big of you. Is that all?

Abe: No. No, it's not all. I sincerely hope you'll take a look in the mirror and decide to do right by the people of salem. They deserve an honorable mayor who'll always put them first.

Jack: I-I gotta go, abe. Uh, thanks, I'm late for my victory party. Thanks for calling. Have a wonderful night!

[Beep]

Eve: Well? What'd he say?

Jack: [Laughs] I don't know. I don't care! Listen, I gotta grab a shower, get dressed. We're gonna be let for our celebration, the party!

Eve: Why wait? Would the new mayor like to join his first lady in the shower?

Jack: Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Eve: Mm-hmm. Well, follow me.

[Laughs]

Jack: Whoo!

Melinda: I was 17 when I got pregnant with you. He was a local boy from a prominent family. I mean, we weren't even supposed to be together. I was in such denial for months. I ignored all the symptoms, i hid my pregnancy. I pretended it wasn't even happening. I couldn't even admit it to myself, much less anyone else. And then one day when I was getting dressed, mama walked in.

Haley: And she saw.

Melinda: And I had no choice but to face it. And I begged her, I begged her not to tell baba, but she insisted that we tell him. And I was terrified.

Haley: Well, what about the father?

Melinda: His family was so far above ours--he was already promised to marry another girl, a girl from a prominent family. I mean, if anyone had found out that I was carrying his child, it would have been... it would have been a terrible scandal in our community. And so I never even told him.

Haley: And baba? What did he--what did he say? Was he--was he furious?

[Sniffles]

Melinda: It was worse. He was ashamed. He said that I brought shame upon our whole family and that I would never be a mother to my child.

Haley: So what did you do?

Ted: So...what can I do to help?

Hope: Don't want to talk about my divorce anymo

Ted: So...what can I do to help?

Hope: Don't want to talk about my divorce anymore. With jack winning the election, this department is going to be under very close scrutiny, and I've got a lot of work to do, ted.

Ted: Is that your way of asking me to leave?

Hope: I appreciate your stopping by--thank you.

Ted: Hope, I don't think you should be alone right now.

Hope: I'm fine. I'll be fine.

Ted: Hope, you need time for yourself to process the loss. Let me take you out to a proper dinner. We'll have a drink or two. We'll keep it light. We don't have to talk about your divorce--we can talk about books, we can talk about movies. Politics.

Hope: Definitely not that. Not politics.

Ted: Well, we don't have to talk about politics. We can talk about whatever you want. We can sit in stony silence if you want.

Hope: Stony silence?

Ted: Mm-hmm.

Hope: You're on. Let's go.

Ted: Okay.

Hope: Oh, I'm sorry.

[Somber music]

Ciara: Okay, so... explain. What do you mean, you lost tripp because of haley?

Claire: Well, tripp is blaming haley's deportation on me. And he says that he can never be with someone as awful as me.

[Sniffles]

Ciara: That really doesn't sound like tripp.

Claire: Yeah, I know. You didn't see him. He was so vicious.

Ciara: But...you've been amazingly supportive. I mean, you let your boyfriend marry another woman. I-I don't know many people who would have gone along with that. I mean, I know I wouldn't have at all.

Claire: Well, I didn't really have a choice. 'Cause tripp was gonna marry her with or without my blessing.

Ciara: It is so unfair that he put you in that situation.

Claire: [Whispers] I know. I know. Why doesn't he see that?

[Edgy music]

Ciara: But I'm like--I'm missing something. I mean... didn't you give your blessing to the marriage? So why is tripp blaming you? Wasn't haley the one who confessed herself? I don't see how that has anything to do with you at all.

[Tense music]

Oh, my god. Claire... did you do something?

Melinda: Baba wanted to kick me out. He wanted to send me someplace where no one could find out about me and my baby. But mama begged him to reconsider... for the sake of my innocent child.

Haley: He wanted to throw you out on the street?

Melinda: And he would have... if mama hadn't acted before he had the chance. Against his wishes, she announced that she was pregnant, that a blessing had been bestowed upon our house. She was still young enough that it was believable.

Haley: How did you hide the pregnancy?

Melinda: Mama took me to her friend's house in the south. We stayed there until I gave birth.

Haley: Oh, my god.

Melinda: I held you in my arms knowing that I would have to say good-bye. I had to leave you, and I am so sorry, haley.

Haley: Why didn't you ever tell me this? I had a right to know! In the foot, deveraux.

Ted: You're shooting yourself in the foot, deveraux. Hope is an extremely popular public official.

Eve: Oh, more popular than the man that was just elected mayor?

Ted: [Small laugh] Do you want people to choose between you?

Eve: I think they'll understand jack's desire to get rid of one of abe'S...puppets. The people of salem deserve an independent, bold commissioner.

Jack: Well, um, out with the old, in with the new, as they say. Hope, I'd be willing to let you save face if you'd like to resign before I fire you.

Hope: Go to hell, jack. Seriously.

Jack: Uh, right, right. Well, have it your way.

Eve: You know, we can make the announcement at the swearing-in of her firing. That way we can send a message to the people of salem: Your vision, new salem.

Jack: [Whispers] New salem.

Eve: New salem.

Jack: New salem.

Eve: Yes.

Ted: Well, if you fire hope, you're gonna have to fire me too.

[Edgy music]

Ciara: Did you do something to make haley confess?

[Dramatic percussion]

Claire: Oh, my god, I should really clean up this mess before maggie comes in.

Ciara: Claire. Claire...

Claire: Oh, my god, I can't believe I lost control like this. Um...oh, she's gonna be really mad. She loves these things.

Ciara: Claire, stop. Can you just tell me what you did?

Claire: Actually, I really don't need you judging me right now, so...

Ciara: What?

Claire: So thanks, but... but no thanks.

Ciara: No, no, claire, I'm not gonna judge you. I'm not gonna judge you. It's just...it's obvious that you need to tell someone, you need to talk about it.

Claire: [Sighs] When tripp decided to marry haley... I was a wreck, right?

Ciara: Yeah.

Claire: Especially when he told me that it would be for three years. I mean, three years of living a lie. I couldn't bear that.

Ciara: Oh, my god, claire. What did you do?

Claire: I secretly recorded tripp saying that the marriage to haley was fake. And then I gave the recording to eve. And then eve threatened to go public with it unless haley confessed. So, uh, so haley came forward, to protect tripp.

Ciara: Wow. Um... so that means that you are the--

Claire: The reason that haley's getting deported. Yes.

Ciara: Huh.

Claire: And tripp figured it out. Oh, my god!

[Laughs] Okay. Wow! So much for no judgment. What, do you want to yell at me too now a-and say that you agree with tripp, that I'm a terrible person?

Ciara: No. Not at all. Actually, I was just gonna tell you that... I'm really, really sorry.

[Emotional music]

Jj: You have to halt this deportation.

Laverne: Why would I do that?

Jj: Because haley's mom is a U.S. Citizen. Doesn't that at least grant her a stay?

Laverne: Miss chen was born in china, and even if ms. Trask's story is true, she admits she wasn't a U.S. Citizen when she gave birth.

Jj: But she is now.

Laverne: We're not waiting any longer, mr. Deveraux. And do I have to remind you that miss chen broke the law when she tricked tripp dalton into marrying her?

Jj: All of this was a trick by my father so he could win an election.

Laverne: Like I said, I have a job to do. I have to follow the rules. The rules say haley chen has a plane to catch. Let's go, miss chen.

Melinda: Please, wait--

Laverne: I gave you plenty of time.

Melinda: Haley... I don't know what to say.

Haley: There's nothing to say. Good-bye, mom.

Jj: I'm coming with you.

[Somber music]

[Both whooping and laughing]

Hope: Can you imagine what those two will do to this town?

Ted: [Sighs] Then we'll do whatever we can to stop them.

Hope: I meant what I said. I don't want you quitting because of me.

Ted: And why would I stay, hope? Working with you is what makes it all worth it. If you're not there... it means nothing.

Abe: Oh... it was a bad night for us, lex. Really wish you were here with me.

Kayla: Abe.

Abe: Oh, hey, kayla, hi.

Kayla: I am so sorry about the election.

Abe: Me too.

Kayla: Can I buy you a drink?

Abe: No, you know, I think I'm gonna head home.

Kayla: Ah, come on. One drink. Steve would insist.

Abe: Okay.

Kayla: Good. I think tonight calls for some of pop's favorite whiskey.

Abe: Well, pour away.

Kayla: Ah. Thank you.

Abe: Mm-hmm.

Kayla: So... how are you?

Abe: I'm a little numb. You know, I thought the voters would see through jack in the end.

Kayla: Have you talked to val?

Abe: She sent me a text earlier. I know we've ended things, but it would have been nice to have her here.

Kayla: Yeah, I know how that feels.

Abe: Any updates on steve?

Kayla: Just that I miss him more every day. But I'm lucky because I have good friends and family to distract me.

Abe: Good friends?

Kayla: Good friends. And to the best mayor this town has ever known.

Abe: [Small chuckle] Mm.

[Kayla chuckles]

Laverne: The van is waiting for miss chen on the lot. I'll tell 'em we're on our way.

Haley: I guess this is it.

Jj: I am--I am so sorry that things turned out this way.

Haley: No, please don't ever blame yourself, jj. All you ever did was try to help me.

Jj: Haley, I--

Haley: No. I don't want any more apologies...okay? Since the first moment that we met, you've been the best thing that's happened in my life. I never should have pushed you away.

Jj: On that we can agree.

Haley: And now it's too late. We'll never know what might have been.

Claire: You're...you're sorry? You don't think I'm a monster?

Ciara: No. Claire, what you did was an impulsive decision that led to a lot of damage, but...tripp kind of put you in an impossible situation. And I know you. I know just how much you care about him, and I know that you're willing to do whatever it takes to protect your relationship with tripp.

Claire: [Whispers] I know. I just made such a mess of everything.

Ciara: Mmm.

Claire: Oh, my god. Maggie's gonna be really upset. She loves these figurines.

Ciara: Well, hey, it's okay. Maybe I can help you fix them. Hmm? Okay, let's see. Um...okay, well, this one is a lost cause. We're just gonna toss this in the trash.

Claire: Yep.

Ciara: Okay? Um, what... I think that this one made a clean cut, and I might be able to fix it with a little bit of super glue. Yeah. That's good.

Claire: You would really do that for me?

Ciara: Of course I would. We are good now, right?

Claire: I hope so.

Ciara: And you know, if I've learned anything from our past feuds it's that we should be open and honest with each other and stop judging each other all the time.

Claire: Mm-hmm. I know. I agree.

Ciara: Yeah, and besides, if we don't have each other's backs, claire, who--who will?

Claire: No, I know. I...I just...

Ciara: What? Claire. What's going on?

Claire: There's something else I need to tell you.

[Tense music]

(Announcer) do you push through migraine?

[Dinner music in background]

Ted: I feel somewhat guilty.

Hope: Hmm? Why is that, ted? More wine?

Ted: Thank you. Well, you might still have your job if, uh, you hadn't agreed to come with me to dinner.

Hope: Oh, don't you worry about that. I mean, it was just a matter of time. Jack would have fired me today, tomorrow, the next night, the next month if we--

Ted: Hope, I am so sorry for what you are going through. I told you to come with me because I...I wanted to distract you from your pain, and...

Hope: Yeah. Nothing can do that.

Ted: I know how... how dedicated you have been to your job--I get it.

Hope: I'm not in pain over that. Although I'm sure I will be at some point.

Ted: I understand. It is your marriage ending. That's what hurts you so bad, huh?

Hope: Rafe and me...

[Small laugh] We were good friends--we were great friends. Really great friends... who fell in love. You gonna drink your wine?

Ted: Yeah.

Hope: [Chuckling] You know, he-- he could always kind of make me laugh, you know, and cheer me up, even with his stupid jokes. Even, um... even when times were spectacularly rough. We really relied on each other, ted. Supported each other on-- on everything. And now it's come to this. Yeah, and now I can't help thinking that... well...

Ted: What? That rafe wasn't there for you when you needed him?

Hope: Nope. He wasn'T.

Ted: And he never made you his number-one priority?

Hope: Nope. I never was. You know, you were right. Rafe does what rafe wants when he wants. It took me a really long time to see that, ted. But now I--

[Small laugh]

[Dinner music continues]

Ted: Um...[Ahem]... You brought your divorce papers here with you?

Hope: I'm the one who had them drawn up, and if I can just find a pen--

Ted: Uh--ahem--let me give you some time--

Hope: No, no. I got the pen. You stay right there. 'Cause I'm ready.

[Soft, uneasy music]

Ciara: Okay. This seems kinda serious.

Claire: Yeah, it is.

[Softly] See, uh... recording tripp is not the first time that I've--I've acted impulsively...when it came to holding on to our relationship. I-I've done some... some really horrible things. Even to you.

Ciara: When I was with tripp? Yeah, I know. But we got past it, claire. I forgive you.

Claire: No, ciara--

Ciara: No, no, claire, listen, it's--it's okay. I'm just--I'm so happy that we found a way to move on.

Claire: [Whispers] Yeah.

Ciara: [Softly] Come here.

Claire: 'Kay. Right.

Abe: Ah, well, thank you.

Kayla: Mm-hmm.

Abe: And thank you for keeping me, uh, company. You know it's gonna take a while to get used to the harsh reality of mayor jack deveraux.

Kayla: You know, the voters were distracted by something shiny--con artist and his con artist wife who would pull out any dirty trick to get elected.

Abe: It all worked.

Kayla: Yeah, but at what cost? Haley chen is being deported as we speak.

Abe: Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I-I wish I could have done something to stop them.

Kayla: Well, you know, in time the people of salem are gonna learn exactly who they voted for. And once that happens, jack and eve deveraux are gonna have to face their day of reckoning. To that.

Abe: Yes.

Jennifer: Melinda? What are you doing?

[Uneasy music]

[Click]

Laverne: Bring her to the van.

Jj: Haley.

Haley: Jj.

Tripp: Wait, wait, wait, wait--thank god I got to you in time.

Laverne: What are you doing here, mr. Dalton?

Tripp: I have haley's belongings.

Laverne: After she tricked you and made you complicit to a federal crime? I don't think I'd be so forgiving.

Tripp: I guess I'm a bigger person than you are.

Haley: Tripp.

Tripp: Hey.

Haley: You made it.

Tripp: I brought everything i could fit in the bag. I just wanna say good-bye.

Haley: I'm so sorry for-- for all the trouble I caused you and claire--

Tripp: No, it's okay, it's okay? We'll keep fighting for you, okay? I promise.

Laverne: That's enough. Take miss chen and put her on the van. Say good-bye to america.

Jj: No!

Haley: What are you--what are you doing?

Jj: Let's go!

[Exciting music]
