Jack: Uh, what's the problem?Eve: I don't know. I'm so sorry, everyone. We seem to be having a little bit of a technical difficulty up here. We'll be right with you, okay?
[Tense music]
Jack: Eve...
Eve: Jack, the file is gone.
Jack: Gone, how can it be gone?
Eve: Don't touch it! It's just gone, okay? There's no confession here, no proof that the engagement's a fake. There's nothing.
Jj: This is the big announcement? The screen's as blank as jack deveraux's brain.
[Indistinct chatter]
Tripp: This seems like a pretty big build-up to nothing.
[Cameras snapping]
Jennifer: Excuse me, I'm going to go file my non-story.
Jack: This is a disaster.
Eve: N-no, no, it isn'T. I'm sorry about this little technical snafu here. But we really do have a very big announcement for you today. The carver campaign is bringing you a fake marriage.
[Crowd booing] That's right. But we are going to bring you a real one. That's right. I'm happy and thrilled to announce that jack and I are getting married.
[Cheers and applause]
[Uneasy music] Yeah! Okay?
Whoo!
Great couple!
Sheila: You know, I should just get going.
Abe: Sheila, sheila, wait, wait, wait. Sheila... sheila, you-- you have no idea how much your support means to me.
Sheila: Thank you.
Abe: No. Thank you.
[Suspenseful music]
Abe: Uh, what--what--what are you--what are you trying to do?
Sheila: What do you mean, what am I trying to do? What are you doing?
Abe: [Stammering] Don't play innocent here. You were trying to kiss me.
Sheila: Me--you were trying to kiss me.
[Dramatic music]
Ted: That was even better than the last time.
Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."
[Soft orchestration]
Abe: I-I wasn't trying to kiss you, sheila.
Sheila: You were sure looking at me all funny.
Abe: I wasn't looking at you in any way at all. I was just thanking you for being so supportive and then you...moved closer to me.
Sheila: Me? You moved closer to me.
Eli: Sheila?
Lani: Dad. Mind telling us what we just walked in on?
Abe: Hey, how are you two? Uh... where'd you two get a baby?
Jordan: Rafe!
Rafe: Jordan.
Jordan: Oh, my god, hi. Did you--did you find my baby?
Rafe: Um... I did find him.
Jordan: Oh!
Rafe: I did, little baby david, I found him. And I brought him back to you.
Jordan: Thank you, oh, my god, thank you!
Rafe: Yeah.
Jordan: I knew I could count on you, thank you. So where is he? Where's baby david?
Rafe: Uh, well... he's not here-here. Um, but he's safe. He's totally safe. In fact, he is with a couple detectives that I would trust my life with, detective price and detective grant.
Jordan: Okay.
Rafe: Yeah.
Jordan: Okay, I-I'm sure with all the red tape here at bayview, you probably had to get clearance from me before you could bring him to me, so... don't worry. I'm gonna sign any papers that they have, okay? So I-I just need to see my son, so...can you go get him now please?
Rafe: Right, uh... yeah, I'm sorry, jordan. I can't do that.
Ted: I must admit that that was not a reaction I was expecting.
Hope: I made it very clear at the hospital that you should never do that again.
Ted: I remember. I was trying to offer you some comfort.
Hope: My god, ted, I have told you over and over again--
Ted: I know. That you are a married woman, i know. But maybe...
Hope: Maybe what?
Ted: Maybe you shouldn't be married anymore.
[Dramatic music]
[Applause]
Jennifer: Mr. Deveraux, ms. Donovan, are you telling us that you called together this whole press conference just to tell us that you got engaged?
Eve: Yes. That is right. We wanted to allow our supporters to know that we are getting hitched. Isn't that right? Yeah.
Jennifer: I see, but you advertised the rally with the hashtags "haleychen" and "ice." What does the candidate proposing to you have to do with haley's immigration case?
Eve: Well, we thought that that was pretty clear, ms. Horton. We wanted to provide the viewers with a clear contrast between our true love story and the ridiculous fiction that haley chen is peddling to ice.
[Crowd agreeing]
Jennifer: I see.
Eve: Mm-hmm.
Jennifer: So if you and jack really did get engaged last night...
Eve: We did.
Jennifer: Okay, then I just have one question. Where's the ring?
[Crowd murmuring]
Eve: Um...
Jennifer: Well? If jack made such a romantic proposal last night, I'm sure he gave you a ring.
Eve: Yes, yes, he did.
[Crowd oohing] Yes, I thought it was best to wear it on my right hand until the press conference. We didn't want our big secret to get out before we made it official. So there it is. What do you think?
Jennifer: I mean, it'S... I mean, it's--it's modest, considering the grandiose story that you're trying to tell.
Eve: Well, jack and I are true romantics at heart. Isn't that right?
[Crowd awwing] You know, it's not about the ring, but it's about the love that we share. That's right. The deveraux campaign is about substance.
[Crowd agreeing] As opposed to the flash that the other side is offering.
[Crowd agreeing]
Claire: Boo!
[Applause]
We're with you, jack. That's it.
[Applause]
I'm with jack deveraux.
Sheila: Hey, murphy, you were at jack deveraux's press conference earlier, right? What? You're kidding. They're still yakking?
[Scoffs] Well, let me know as soon as it finishes up, because the mayor's office has to be ready to fire back on whatever lies they're selling. Mm-hmm, okay, yeah. Thanks, bye.
Lani: This is david.
Abe: [Chuckles]
Lani: Say hi.
Sheila: Hold up, I thought david was dead.
Jordan: I know the hospital is no place for a baby, but I'm his mother and I will keep him safe.
Rafe: No, jordan, it's not the hospital. It's you. I can't bring the baby here without talking to your doctors first, all right? But like I said, david's fine. He's healthy, he's happy, he's with the detectives, so you got nothing to worry about.
Jordan: Oh, I mean, maybe it's for the best. I mean, look at me. I mean, what if my baby boy saw me like this? It would probably scare him half to death.
Rafe: Jordan, hey. You look fine.
Jordan: You have always been so gentle and kind.
Rafe: Listen, anyway, I... have david's birth certificate here. I noticed that the father's name is not on it, so I was hoping you could help me fill that out. No? Will you tell me the name of the baby's father?
Hope: That's a bit presumptuous, don't you think? Weighing in on my marriage?
Ted: I'm sorry if that offends you. But, as you know, I'm well-aware of your dissatisfaction with rafe. You told me many times that he's hurt you, that he disappointed you.
Hope: I shouldn't have said anything. I wish I hadn'T.
Ted: I've seen it with my own eyes. Leaving when you needed him, not making you his number one priority. I used to be married, too, hope. But when there's more disappointment than joy, when--when trust has been seriously undermined, maybe it's time to think what are you doing in this marriage?
Sheila: I am so sorry, both of you. It's like my mouth spit it out before my brain had a chance to tell it to shut the hell up.
Lani: It's okay.
Eli: Yeah, we know you didn't mean any harm.
Abe: So whose baby is david?
Eli: He's jordan ridgeway's son. Rafe brought him back from california.
Lani: He left him with us for a while while he went over to bayview. He's gonna go see if jordan will tell him who david's father is, so that way someone can take care of this little angel, huh?
[Cooing] Mwah. Sweet boy.
Jordan: I wish I knew what to do with this. Like, is it better half up or maybe down?
Rafe: Jordan... jordan, can you tell me, is the baby named after his father? Is his name david, too?
Jordan: What does the baby's dad have to do with any of this?
Rafe: Well, it has everything to do with it. If you tell me his father's name, maybe I can track him down, then maybe he can look after david. You know, at least until you can look after him yourself.
Jordan: No! Okay, that is the last thing that I want. Do you hear me? David's dad has never been a part of his life and he never will be.
Ted: You needed someone and rafe was off being there for one of his exes. Your husband seems to have time for everyone--sami and kate and now jordan--everyone except his wife.
Hope: No, I can't do this. I can't, I-- you're the last person I should be talking to about--
Ted: Fine. How about we talk about you and me then?
[Cheers and applause]
Eve: So now that we have made it official, I guess there's no worry about our secret getting out, so here it goes. There we go.
[Cheers and applause]
Jennifer: Ms. Donovan, I have one more question for you.
Eve: Oh, I'm sorry, that's all the time that we have for today. We just wanted our voters to know that a vote for jack deveraux is a vote for the truth.
[Crowd cheering] In love and in everything else.
[Crowd awwing]
[Applause]
Yeah, hang in there, jack!
Whoo!
Jack: Uh, thank you, everybody! Thank you, thank you for coming.
[Indistinct chatter] You're welcome, you're welcome. I'll see you again soon. And re--
Jennifer: No, no, not so fast. I have a few more questions for the candidate.
Eve: Claire, claire. I-I'm sorry. I know that is not at all what you expected.
Claire: What the hell just happened, eve? Where was tripp's confession that he wasn't in love with haley and that he wanted to be with me?
Eve: I'm not sure.
Claire: Really, you're not-- you're not sure?
Eve: I'm not sure, okay? I had it all cued up, pushed play, and it was gone. It was like it was erased.
Claire: Oh, my--how? How, how did this happen?
Eve: I don't know. I don't know. But, you know what, it doesn't matter, 'cause we will figure out a way to break up haley and tripp, okay? And it's gonna be easy, because that relationship's not even real.
Claire: I don't care, eve! Tripp and haley are getting married tomorrow, and that just feels a little bit too real to me.
Jack: I think you heard eve. I don't believe we're taking any more questions at this time. Thank you.
Jennifer: Is that what you want? You just want eve to run the whole show, jack? Yeah, that's what I thought. I may not recognize the man that you've become, but I know your deer in the headlights look, jack, and that's what happened just now. It was written all over your face. Eve completely blindsided you with that engagement announcement, didn't she?
Jack: Of course not. You heard what eve said to the crowd; that was the purpose of the event.
Jennifer: Okay, fine, well, you can sell that lie to anyone who doesn't know you, but it's not gonna work with me. I don't know what was supposed to be on that video, but I know it was not some romantic proposal, jack.
Jack: Well... you can believe whatever you want. Considering "the spectator's" endorsement of abe carver, its reporter's rush to judgment about me and my campaign doesn't surprise me at all. But in the interests of fairness--something your paper knows nothing about--I'd be willing to entertain some true journalistic inquiries, assuming that the editor of "the spectator" has an actual question.
Jennifer: I just have one question. Are you really going to let eve rope you into marrying her? What patients don't realize is
Jack: I am my own man. I'm not eve's puppet.
Jennifer: That's exactly what you are, jack. You let her talk you into running for mayor, talk you into assassinating the character of our dear friend abe carver, talk you into betraying your son so you could use some poor girl as a scapegoat for your political gain, and talk you into putting a ring on her finger! Do you really think that anyone believes this was all your idea?
Tripp: So we're all agreed that none of us saw that coming?
Jj: You know what, I gotta say that I'm not surprised.
Haley: You expected your dad to marry eve?
Jj: No, no, definitely not, but considering neither one of them has a heart, they're a perfect match.
Haley: Yeah. I'm just glad that whatever was on that video had nothing to do with tripp and me or the story that we told ice.
Tripp: Yeah, definitely.
Haley: Tripp, you okay?
Tripp: Sure, why?
Haley: You just seem a little distracted.
Tripp: Yeah, I was just wondering where claire disappeared to.
[Tense music]
Eve: Claire. Claire-claire, I want you to listen to me, okay? We will find a way to expose haley and tripp, all right?
Claire: See, you keep saying that. But nothing ever happens. Like, do you have any idea how hard this is for me?
Eve: Yes, of course I do!
Claire: Oh, but you just don't care, do you?
Eve: How could you say that, claire?
Claire: Oh, because it's true.
Eve: No.
Claire: And you know it is. You know it is! See, all you care about is getting whatever the hell you want. To hell with me, right? I'm just some whiny annoyance to you. Come on, admit it.
Eve: No, I'm not gonna admit anything like that, because that's not how I feel. Gosh, I think of you as just a strong, talented, spirited young woman.
[Stammering] Okay, so you are just a little bit whiny right now. I'll admit that. You have every right to be, honey. This is a very tough time for you. This is very stressful. I get that. Listen to me, we want--we want the same thing. And you know what? I resent that you think that i don't care about you, honey. Because, you know, I think of you as...
Claire: As what? What do you think of me as?
Eve: I miss my little girl. I still miss her every single day. But I also miss being a mom. I mean, it was part of my identity. It was a big part of my identity, so I just... I don't know, it comforts me to be able to nurture a young woman in a motherly way. It just helps me tamp down all that grief, you know? I mean, if you can actually tamp it down.
Claire: That's really sweet and sad, eve. Look, I-I'm sorry. I am sorry I've been...really impatient with you lately.
Eve: Oh, gosh, claire. It's okay. I totally, totally get it. All right? The man that you love is with another woman. Even if he's pretending to love her, I know it's--it's gotta kill you. It's hard for you. But you know what? This is all gonna be over with really soon. We're gonna get haley out of the picture. Everything will be good. It's just gonna take a little bit longer than we expected, okay?
Claire: Okay.
Eve: So you have to tell me. You have to have faith--faith-- and you can trust me on this one, okay?
Claire: I'm gonna try. All right, I'm gonna try.
Eve: And I'm not--I'm not gonna abandon you on this, all right? One way or the other--listen to me--we are gonna get haley out of the way so you can have tripp all to your beautiful self. Okay?
Claire: Okay, well, how long is that gonna take?
Eve: [Sighs]
Claire: Okay, I'm being impatient and I just told you I'd try not to be impatient.
Eve: Well, it's very hard to be patient when you're in a lot of pain and I get that.
Claire: Mm-hmm.
Eve: But listen to me. Sometimes, in love and in politics, you have to play the long game, okay?
Claire: Okay.
Eve: This will be over with soon. You're gonna get through it. But right now, I need to get back to my, uh--you know, my fiancé.
[Laughs]
Eli: Yo, figured I'd help you out with the drinks.
Sheila: Oh, aren't you a gentleman? But we might be waiting a while, 'cause I don't know where this bartender disappeared to.
Eli: It's all good.
Sheila: But getting right to the point, you look real happy these days, my friend. So I assume detective price has a lot to do with that?
Eli: Yeah, yeah, for sure. So what's up with you and abe?
Sheila: [Scoffs]
Lani: [Chuckles] He's beautiful, isn't he?
Abe: Yes, he is. But I am worried about you getting so close to him.
Lani: Why would you say that?
Jordan: Why can't you bring my baby here to me? I'm sure if you talked to my doctors, they would tell you that is what's best for me and my son.
Rafe: Jordan, I understand how much having a family means to you, but right now, you're not well, okay? You need to keep focusing on your treatment and then maybe-- you know, maybe one day, you and david, you can be together again.
Jordan: Okay.
Rafe: Okay?
Jordan: You're right. I need to get well. That is what's best for david. And for me.
Rafe: There you go. That's right. That's right, but for right now, we need to find someone who can take care of david. And you said you don't want david's father to be part of his life, so is there someone else? Another blood relative? Ben?
Jordan: Absolutely not!
Hope: Okay. Okay, fine. This is my take on you and me. I've confided in you about my husband at times... when I was hurt, felt sad, disappointed. So naturally, of course, I can understand why you would see my marriage as fractured. Vulnerable, fragile. But you've misread that situation, mr. Laurent. You thought that I was ready to give up on my marriage. If I've misled you in any way, I'm terribly sorry. It wasn't intentional.
Ted: Hey... no. I don't think I misread the situation. I believe I have a good grasp on it. Hope, you are ready to move on. And hopefully with me. - Just like any other family
Jack: No one tells me what to do. Not you, not eve. No one. The choice I make is my own.
Eve: Oh, I am so sorry, but the candidate is very, very busy and he doesn't have any time to take any more questions from the press. Come on, jack.
Sheila: Me and abe? I don't know what you're talking about.
Eli: When lani and I walked in, the way you two were standing--it looked like there was a lot of tension between you two.
Sheila: Oh, that? Nah, nah, nothing.
Eli: Well, then, what's up? I thought you two were getting along. Maybe even becoming friends.
Sheila: [Scoffs] Please, the mayor and I are definitely not friends.
Abe: You know, it's good of you to help jordan take care of her son, but I'm afraid that this david could bring up feelings of your own.
Lani: Dad, I appreciate you worrying about me. But I don't need another baby named david to bring up feelings about my own son. He's right there with me every day, no matter what. What are you doing? I love my little boy, dad, i always will, but right now, this little sweet angel, he needs all the love that he can get, don't you? What is that? Oh, oh. You want some to-go food? Come on.
Jordan: Listen to me, rafe. I do not want ben anywhere near my child. You have to understand, clyde, he turned his son into a monster. And I don't even want to give him the slightest chance to influence my little baby boy.
Rafe: I get that, I do. Problem is, we're running out of options here. And you said yourself that you don't want your son to be part of the system.
Jordan: No, I don'T.
Rafe: But that's exactly what's gonna happen if we don't find a suitable temporary guardian. Now, if you don't want david's father to look out for him, is there anyone else that you trust?
Jordan: What about you?
Ted: I'm sorry if I've been too blunt. It's a tendency of mine, as you know.
Hope: Ted... we can't talk about this, not anymore.
Ted: You said before that you want me to leave you alone, to respect your marriage, but that's not what you really want.
Hope: What I want... what I want is for my marriage to work.
Ted: And yet you know that your husband is not as committed as you are. Otherwise he would put you first, hope, all the time.
Hope: Stop, stop, stop.
Ted: Hope, if you were in a good marriage, I would respect that. I would be a fool not to. But this, what you have with rafe... I see a man that is not committed enough, who is not passionate enough for you. I see a man that... is not warmed by your own presence. That is not follement amoreux avec toi.
Hope: English please. English.
Ted: Crazy in love with you.
[Sighs] Like I am.
Sheila: [Scoffs] Hey, don't look at me like that. All I did was give the man some suggestions about the campaign and abe bit my head off.
Eli: That doesn't sound like abe.
Sheila: Not usually, but, i mean, who knows? Maybe if his girlfriend hadn't moved out of town, he'd be in a better mood.
Eli: Whoa, whoa, hold up. Don't put this on my mom. All right, she got a great opportunity and abe knows that. He would never stand in the way of her career.
Sheila: Yeah, okay, that's what he says, but, believe me, that man doesn't know what he needs.
Eli: Really? Okay. Well, please, tell me what he needs then.
Sheila: What every man needs! A woman who'll stand by your side and tell you what's what.
Eve: Well, I don't know about you, jack, but I think we did some major damage control tonight. You know what, if your numbers aren't up tomorrow--
Jack: I don't give a damn about the polls.
Eve: Well, I don't either, but, you know, a bump in the news cycle is a bump.
Jack: Forget the numbers. Do you honestly think I'm gonna marry you?
Hope: You're crazy in love with me? You barely know me.
Ted: I know what's important to know. Okay. You like escalators better than elevators, because secretly you like to people watch. You put a pair of boots under your desk because you like to walk in the rain. When you get your afternoon coffee, you always stop at the window of the bakery on the corner, but you never go inside. I never understood why. Sometimes you take a paper clip and you twist it into a shape of a cat. But you only do this when you think no one is looking.
Hope: It's a dog.
Ted: Ah. Sorry.
[Both laughing softly] You like your pizza crust a little burnt. But you will never drink coffee that hasn't been brewed in the last ten minutes. You want the world to take you seriously. But you laugh at silly things sometimes, just like now. And when you do, your eyes-- they sparkle and they shine, just like the lights in paris. The very important things to know is that you are strong and caring and kind, and that you will do anything to protect the people that you love. But I see--I see that you need to be protected just as you protect the others. That you need to be valued and cherished. That you need to be the center of someone's universe. And that makes me love you even more.
Rafe: Me. You want me to look after david?
Jordan: Well, it won't be for long. Because I'm gonna do everything that I can to get better and get back to my son. But until I'm ready, I trust you to look after david and to keep him safe. I trust you. Please. Would you do that for me, please?
Rafe: Jordan, uh... presenting downtherecare with cottonelle.
Tripp: So what are you planning on saying for your vows?
Haley: I figured that I would go with something traditional. You know, "to have and to hold, in sickness and in health." Why, did you-- did you want something different?
Tripp: I don't know, I just--I figured I'd write my own. You know, add a couple quotes in there from "the wedding singer," you know, "four weddings and a funeral," "muriel's wedding." Any movie with "wedding" in the title, really.
Haley: You're kidding, right?
Tripp: Kind of. What? I mean, just because this isn't a real wedding doesn't mean we can't have a little fun with it, right?
Haley: Well, just because it's not a real wedding I'm thinking we should be more serious about it.
Tripp: Haven't you ever been to a real wedding where the bride and groom use stupid quotes in their vows? I mean, it's all over youtube.
Jj: Mom. You okay?
Jennifer: Yeah. Just about to file my story. Take a look.
[Somber music]
So there you go. All done.
Eve: I don't know what you're so damn upset about. Now if you want to back out of this, you go right ahead. I'll just move this ring over to this hand, and we'll figure out another way to spin this. But you better think of something fast. 'Cause haley and tripp are getting married tomorrow.
Jack: This romance you've concocted could play well to my base.
Eve: Yeah, and not to mention the news cycle.
Jack: I don't need one more damn news cycle. We're gonna get married tomorrow too.
Eve: Tomorrow?
Jack: No time like the present, right? Haley chen and my nephew are busy concocting a lie. And the best way to fight a lie isn't with the truth, is it? It's with a bigger lie.
Eve: You could be right about that. Come on, jack; it's not all fabrication, is it? I mean... there is something between us. Right?
Jack: We can sell this. You're right. It's an all-american love story. And who doesn't love a love story?
Sheila: What? Why are you looking at me like that for?
Eli: You just seem awfully concerned about abe's love life.
Sheila: Hey, it's my job to take care of the man, and, plus, you've seen what the other side is doing to win this election. It's a street fight.
Eli: And you got his back.
Sheila: And I got his drinks. So come on. I mean, the man's grumpy enough without letting him go thirsty, so...
Eli: Here. I got you.
Sheila: Okay.
Eli: I got you. Look at you. All right. A cosmo for the lady.
Lani: Not now.
Abe: Hey.
Rafe: Hey.
Abe: How's it going?
Rafe: Oh, I heard that I'd find you guys here.
Eli: Um, hey. Have you found anyone to watch this baby? What's going on?
Rafe: Yeah, actually, uh, jordan asked me to take care of him. I even got his favorite little blanket here. Hey, check it out. What do you think of that? Huh? Oh, yeah. See, now, come on over here. Oh, yeah. Can I see him? Oh, we like that. Oh, you like it. Come here, david. Come here, buddy.
Lani: Of course.
Rafe: Yeah.
[Laughs] Hey.
Eli: Bye.
Rafe: [Laughs] Oh, yeah. Oh.
Ted: Hope. I know you have feelings for me. I felt it in our case. I just want you to know that I'm willing to wait. I can wait until you're allowed to admit those feelings to yourself.
