[Phone beeps]

Ciara: What was that about?

Ben: [Sighs] According to stefan, el fideo's killers are on the move, and I'm going after them.

Ciara: What? No, ben. The police can take care of that by themselves.

Ben: No, they can't, because these bastards left a jurisdiction. The police can't pursue it. But I can.

Ciara: No, you can'T.

Ben: Yes, I can.

Ciara: No, you can'T. Ben, you're not-- you're not some x-men.

[Laughs] Like, what about your hand?

Ben: What about it?

Ciara: You literally just got out of the hospital.

Ben: Ciara, it's my job.

Ciara: You still have stitches. You can't even drive. No. What if you actually run into those guys and find them? No, you can't go. You're not doing it, and that's the end of that, no.

Ben: You are so cute when you're all concerned and bossy.

Ciara: [Scoffs]

Ben: But there's no way I'm letting stefan down.

[Knocking]

[Soft dramatic music]

Ciara: Mom? Um, what are you doing here?

Hope: I need to talk to ben about some information we received from jordan.

Ciara: Wow. I already told you this, like, a million times. Ben had nothing to do with setting the fire.

Hope: Ciara, relax. This isn't about the fire. Your sister told rafe that she has a baby.

[Indistinct chatter]

Ted: I'm glad I found you.

Abe: What can I do for you?

[Tense music]

Abe: What's this?

Ted: My resignation. It's effective immediately.

Haley: So, tripp invited me to dinner to thank me for treating his arm and we had such a good time, and when we kissed, I was like... wow...

[Laughs]

Tripp: Now, listen to you. I'm a believer.

Haley: Yeah, I mean, here in the loft, it's not so hard, but with some ice agents staring me down...

[Sighs] What if I screw up?

Tripp: You won'T.

Haley: But you don't know that.

Tripp: I know you, all right? You're smart. You know what you want and what you need to do to get it-- what we need to do.

Haley: You are just-- you are so good at making me think that this is possible.

Tripp: [Chuckles]

[Sighs]

[Knocking]

Haley: What if that's ice? I'm not even ready.

Tripp: It's okay. It's okay, all right? The ice interview is set at the police department, so we're okay.

[Clears throat] Hey.

Haley: Jj, if this is about changing my mind--

Jj: No, no, you won't-- I get it. I'm all in on being best man. Look, I came to see claire.

Claire: Wow, I really can't believe that I actually have to spend the night alone because tripp wanted to run off and hold haley's hand. Wow...[Laughs] Seriously. What a waste.

Eve: Look, I know that this was a tough night for you. And I know that you're disappointed, but you know what? Claire, you got through it.

Jack: Mm-hmm.

Eve: And this'll all be over with very soon.

Claire: Oh, well, not soon enough.

Jack: We're so close, claire. Once haley and tripp lie to ice, on the record, we'll be releasing our recording.

Claire: Yeah, and you're sure that this is gonna work?

Eve: It's gonna work like a charm. The lie will be exposed. The engagement will be revealed as a fraud. You will be with tripp again, and--

Claire: And haley chen will be on a slow boat back to china.

[Dramatic music]

Ben: Did you just say jordan has a baby?

Hope: Yeah, she told rafe that she left her baby in california with a friend.

Ben: A baby? No, I don't believe that. I mean...[Laughs] I haven't talked to jordan in a while, but the last time she came back to salem, she never mentioned anything about having a kid.

Ciara: Yeah. No, she never mentioned anything about having a baby to me either, and we were locked in a cabin together for days.

Ben: Do you think she's just making this up? Is the baby even real?

Ted: I know detective hernandez told you about my past.

Abe: Blackmail-- not something most das put on their resume.

Ted: I regret it.

Abe: I'm sure you do, but it's worked out well for you, hasn't it? I should've vetted you myself, but I trusted the commissioner.

Ted: No. Don't blame it on hope. I'm the one who asked her to vouch for me.

Abe: She should've laughed in your face, but instead, she lied by omission, took advantage of me.

Ted: But that was not the intention, sir.

Abe: Hope and I are more than employer and employee. We've known each other for many years. Our families are close, and...she's one of my most trusted friends. So, for her to withhold this kind of information from me, especially at a critical time like this-- it puts me in a terrible position.

Ted: No, I realize that, and I'm very sorry, but please, don't take it out on hope. Take it out on me. Accept my resignation.

Eve: Oh, excuse me. Did I just hear the word, "resignation"?

Jack: Don't tell me there's trouble in the ranks.

Abe: I'm having a private conversation with my district attorney.

Jack: Who just offered to resign. I think we, as the taxpayers, have a right to know why.

Eve: This is the second da to resign in a matter of weeks. It's not exactly a testament to the stability of your administration, now, is it? So, what happened?

Abe: I'm not gonna answer these ridiculous questions.

Eve: Melinda trask tendered her resignation and then we found out she was hiding the fact that her little sister was in this country illegally, so I am actually all ears.

Abe: Would you leave him alone please?

Eve: Well, I'm just saying that he has the reputation as a very accomplished attorney. Why would he give up such a powerful position, and so soon, unless something was wrong? Hm? So, what are you hiding, mr. Laurent?

[Tense music]

Ben: Do you believe jordan's story is true?

Ciara: Is there a way you can track down the baby?

Hope: Rafe dropped everything and flew to california at jordan's request to look.

Ciara: So, it's a good thing that rafe is checking it out, right?

Hope: Unless she's manipulating him.

Ben: [Scoffs] Look, I wish I could tell you something that could help, but I really don't know anything. I mean, if this baby is real, I guess it makes sense why jordan didn't tell me about it-- if she still believes I was this threat to chad and abigail's baby.

Hope: Yeah. You're probably right. Thank you for your time. Bye, sweetheart.

Ciara: Bye, mom.

Hope: I'll let you get back to--

Ciara: Actually, wait. I was just thinking that if jordan is lying about having this baby, then she could also be lying about setting the first fire that nearly killed me. Maybe she did do it after all.

[Soft dramatic music]

Hope: Bye.

Ciara: Bye, mom.

[Door slams]

Ciara: [Sighs]

Tripp: Why do you wanna see claire?

Jj: I still don't get it. What is this doing in a jewelry box? Is she here?

Tripp: No, no, she'S...

Claire: [Sighs] Oh...

[Laughs] Hello-- practically a welcoming committee.

Tripp: Hey, I'm sorry-- I'm sorry for bailing on you last night.

Claire: No, no, no, no. You're fine. You're fine. It was no biggie. I had a big room all to myself, big bed, ordered some room service for breakfast. And I get it. I do. You need to be there for haley.

Haley: I was just-- I was so afraid that jack was onto us, so I freaked out, but tripp talked me down.

Claire: Yeah, he's really good at that.

Tripp: Yeah, we actually crammed all last night, you know, just to get ready for the ice interview.

Haley: Yeah, I mean, I'm practically an expert on all things tripp, like, how much you love to camp and, uh--oh yeah, and that first time that you went camping in the arizona desert.

Claire: You like to camp?

Tripp: Yeah, but you knew that. Oh, but I bet you didn't know that haley here was obsessed with nick jonas.

[Laughter]

Claire: Wow! No, I didn't know that. Um, but, you know, I do remember what you like more than anything in the world, and I was gonna give that to you last night, but, um, you had to leave, so...

Haley: I am so sorry again, claire.

Claire: No, it's all good.

Tripp: Um... ooh, yeah, we need to go.

Claire: Oh, I mean, your guys' interview isn't for a while.

Haley: Yeah. We wanna be early.

Claire: That's right. Of course you do, yes.

Tripp: Wish us luck.

Claire: Lots and lots. Yeah, all right.

Jj: I'm pulling for you.

Haley: Just, uh, one little thing. All right, there. Now you're perfect.

Tripp: Thank you.

Haley: Thank you.

Tripp: Mm-hmm. All right, bye.

Claire: Bye.

[Door slams]

[Screams]

[Glass shatters]

[Laughs] Do you hate this as much as I do?

Jj: I...

[Laughs] You know, I didn't really come by to see the happy couple. I just came to see you.

Abe: Fine, fine, fine. Mr. Laurent did offer to resign.

Abe: He wants to do what he thinks is best for my campaign.

Eve: Hm, a true patriot. Who knew? But what I don't understand is why is his resignation good for you?

Abe: Ted is an american citizen, but he was born in france, and given jack's virulent anti-immigration stance, ted feels he would be a liability to my campaign. And knowing the two of you, you would even go after his accent.

Jack: What accent?

[Forced chuckle] Very funny, mr. Mayor.

Abe: Well, actually, I don't think it is, which is why I'm not about to accept ted's resignation. This country's always welcomed immigrants, and will continue to do so.

Jack: I have no issue with immigrants, mr. Mayor, as long as they're here legally.

Abe: Well, if there is nothing else...

Jack: Hm, no. Have a nice day.

Ted: Mr. Mayor, why did you do that?

Abe: They just tick me off. They're relentless. They're vultures. But if they find out I hired a da without vetting even a crooked, blackmailing son of a bitch, they'll vaporize us.

Ted: So, I stay.

Abe: Yeah. You stay for now.

Ted: Thank you.

Abe: Do me a favor, ted.

Ted: Sure.

Abe: Just do your job. And keep your mouth shut.

Ted: [Exhales]

Claire: Wait a minute. You went through my jewelry box without my permission and without me there?

Jj: No, haley wanted to put your ring back in your jewelry box to keep it safe. I was with her.

Claire: Still, jj. I think that's really weird that you did that without my consent. And if you don't mind telling me what's the big deal about a lighter, 'cause a lot of people have those.

Jj: Oh, it's just that that this one reminded me of the one that ben used back when he held chad and abigail hostage at that cabin.

Claire: [Scoffs] What do you know about ben's lighter?

Jj: Lani and i were the investigating officers.

Claire: Okay...

[Stammers] I'm sorry. I still don't really understand. So-- so you think that it's the same lighter?

Jj: Well, look, I know that it's farfetched, maybe nothing more than a coincidence, but I just heard that jordan is swearing that she didn't set the fire that almost killed ciara last year.

Claire: Okay, and what? What, do you think it was me?

[Scoffs]

Haley: [Sighs] This is part of it, isn't it, that they make us wait, and we freak out. I mean, it makes sense. It's easier to trip us up that way.

Tripp: Look, we got here early, right? And they have a lot of pending cases on their plate, and they're just running a little behind, okay?

Haley: Yeah, unless they're messing with us.

Tripp: And we are prepared.

Haley: Your favorite color is green, right?

Tripp: I was thinking about changing it to orange.

Haley: Tripp. Don't do that. Don't mess with me, not right now.

Tripp: We're going to kill it, okay? After all, it is totally obvious that we are two crazy fools in love with each other, all right?

Haley: Totally...

[Laughs softly]

[Door clicks]

Laverne: I'm agent laverne smith. Just so you know, I'm not a fan of fairy tales.

[Tense music]

I have read your application, and I don't buy one bit of this case.

Haley: And when he told me that he was afraid of rabbits--

Tripp: Not afraid.

Haley: That was it. That was it. I mean, how could I not fall head over heels? Look at this face.

Both: [Chuckle]

Tripp: All I know is, if i hadn't gotten a first-degree grease burn on my arm, I would've never met the love of my life. And now I can't imagine a single day without her.

Laverne: You've known each other a few weeks. This is one of the fastest courtships I've ever heard of.

Tripp: It was love at first sight. I was completely knocked out the moment I laid eyes on her.

Laverne: But didn't you have a girlfriend at the time all this magic happened, mr. Dalton?

Tripp: Yes, claire brady.

Laverne: Mm.

Tripp: But we broke up.

Laverne: So you're saying that your relationship with ms. Brady is completely over?

Tripp: Yes.

Laverne: She has quite the social media presence, doesn't she?

Tripp: She does...

[Clears throat]

Laverne: She certainly was over the moon about a phone case you gave her.

Tripp: At christmas time.

Laverne: And it looks like from her posts and tags and emojis and status that you were pretty much her world. It seems she's even written a song about you--several. Mm, sounds like love to me. It really ended so quickly?

Tripp: It wasn't like it was a super serious relationship. I was kind of on the rebound when we hooked up.

Laverne: Hmm... and you lived with jj deveraux after you left your sister's house?

Haley: Yes. I needed a place to stay.

Laverne: And it was a completely platonic relationship?

Haley: Yes. Jj and I were-- we're just friends, nothing more.

Laverne: Interesting, because if your relationship with mr. Deveraux was completely platonic, why did you kiss him?

Claire: Oh, my god. Ciara's my aunt, jj, and we're family. I love her so much and I would never do something like that. And honestly, I can't believe that you would even think that. I didn't even know where she was to do something so evil.

Jj: Hey, claire?

Claire: What?

Jj: I really think you need to relax. I'm not accusing you.

Claire: [Scoffs] Okay. Okay, good, 'cause you really freaked me out there for a second...

[Sighs] Okay, so, um, what's the big deal about this random lighter?

Jj: Well, ben used to live here. Got me wondering-- maybe he left a lighter behind or hid it in your jewelry box.

Claire: [Sighs] Look, jj. I'm really ashamed to say that, you know, for a while, I...

[Stammers] I took up smoking. And so, I kept my cigarettes and my lighter in that box.

Jj: So, you bought the lighter.

Claire: No, I just-- I found it lying around here, and I kept it.

Jj: So then, it could be ben'S.

Claire: Okay, or it could be joey's or jade'S. You know, that girl liked these pumpkin spice scented candles that just smelled like vomit...

[Laughs softly]

Jj: Still, I think it's possible it's ben'S.

Claire: Okay, sure. I guess so. So, what?

Jj: So, it could be evidence that ben started that fire that almost killed ciara.

Claire: Oh, jj. That really sounds like a long shot to me.

Jj: Yeah? But it's possible, which means I need to go to the police with this.

Ben: I can't believe that jordan could have a baby.

Ciara: Or not.

Ben: [Sighs]

Ciara: I mean, when we were in the cabin together, she was never really hugely maternal with charlotte. And I get that she's not well, but...what kind of a person just walks away from their own baby?

Ben: After my mom died, jordan could've just walked away. She didn'T. She was always there. No matter how bad a day could get, she'd be there with a hug or advice--pancakes.

Ciara: [Laughs softly] That's where you learned how to make those.

Ben: Jordan did whatever she possibly could to try to give me some kind of normal, and a house that was anything but.

Ciara: I am so sorry, ben. I can't even begin to imagine the kind of pain you must be going through-- that the one person who cared about you your entire life-- well, I mean...

[Sighs] She's not that person anymore, obviously. This is not the same sister who was so good to you before.

Ben: No, no, no. It is not...

[Sighs]

Ciara: And ben, even though she's changed, and even though she is not well, it does--it does not mean that all the good times you guys had were a lie. If you felt protected and loved by her, ben, then you were. Okay? And I know it's hard, but you can try to cherish those positive memories you have with her.

Ben: I don't know how to do that. Ciara, how do I reconcile that the sister who loved and protected me now hates me? She thinks I'm this evil, dangerous person. She's made it her life purpose to make sure that everyone in this town continues to stay against me and be afraid of me. Could you do that? Could you value all the positive memories?

Ciara: Probably not--

Ben: Probably not. And now I just learned that she abandoned her own baby? Why? To protect people from her evil brother? To stop him from ruining more lives and ending more lives?

[Sighs] I guess that's an honorable reason.

Ciara: What? Honorable? Ben, it's not honorable. It's vile and disgusting and just proves to me that she is insane. Ben, you-- you are such an amazing person now. You are such a decent human. Okay? Jordan is the one who's dangerous. She's the dangerous one and she is the one who wants to destroy people's lives.

Ben: Why, why? Why? How does that happen? How does somebody go from being so good and kind...

Ciara: [Sighs]

Ben: And end up like this?

Ciara: I don't know. But I do know that everything is going to be okay. Hmm? I promise. Everything is gonna be okay.

[Soft dramatic music]

Ben: I don't know what I'd do without you. The real world calls.

Ciara: [Sighs] What are you doing now?

Ben: I'm doing my job. A little part of me wants to jam out to california right now and see if this is all real, if this baby's real, but I know rafe's on it, so I'm gonna go handle these creeps in the meantime.

Ciara: By yourself? Ben, are you kidding me? Can't you at least call, like, the da or the fbi or somebody? Just call someone...

[Sighs]

Ben: Stefan wants me to handle this personally.

[Gun clicks]

[Knocking]

Hope: Come in. Oh, hey.

Ted: Hey.

Hope: Hey, I've been trying to reach you. Ted, I appreciate your offer to...

[Sighs] Don't resign because of me.

Ted: I didn'T. Abe wouldn't accept my resignation. Looks like we're stuck with each other.

Eve: Well, well, mayor carver. What, are you off to shake some hands and kiss some babies?

Abe: I'm headed back to my office to do my job, which I expect to keep.

Jack: Before you go, I would really like to hear your official position on illegal immigration. I mean, I know that you support ted laurent, a naturalized citizen, but this thing with chen-- did you know that she and her faux fiancé are being interviewed by ice today?

Abe: I'm aware.

Eve: Yes, an illegal who got caught is trying to game the system, and you're fine with that?

Abe: Well, maybe they're in love.

Jack: I happen to know for a fact that the relationship is a lie.

Abe: How do you know that?

Haley: I don't know where you got your information.

Laverne: From jj's father, jack deveraux. His son confided in him about the alleged kiss, and he made it sound like you two were an item.

Haley: [Scoffs] Mr. Deveraux doesn't have his facts straight. Did he lie about the kiss?

Haley: No, he--he didn'T. There was a kiss. Jj kissed me.

Laverne: And what happened?

Haley: Nothing happened. I told him that I just saw him as a friend.

[Sighs] I know how this looks to immigration and social media and mr. Deveraux, but tripp and I...

[Sighs] You're married. You know how crazy love can be. It happens, and it comes out of nowhere, especially when you least expect it. But when it does, it does, and that's what happened with me and tripp and I am just the luckiest girl in the world that he wants to spend the rest of his life with me.

Laverne: Well, he may have to move to china to do it. (Announcer) do you push through migraine?

Ted: Abe believed that I'm-- I am more a liability if i resign than if I stay. So, he asked me to stay-- well, at least until after the election...

[Sighs] But I meant what I said. I don't wanna cause any trouble for you.

Hope: You won'T.

Ted: Um, I don't think rafe's gonna be happy that I'm sticking around.

Hope: Then he'll have to take it up with abe.

Ted: Yeah. Maybe I should talk to rafe-- try to clear the air, right?

Hope: He's not here. He is in california.

Ted: California? Well, what's in california?

Hope: Jordan ridgeway's baby, apparently.

Ted: A baby?

Hope: Yeah, she asked to see rafe, and he-- she claimed that she left her baby with a friend and, of course...

[Laughs softly] Rafe was the only person in the entire universe she trusts to go get the baby.

Ted: Ah, and rafe couldn't say no?

Hope: Did I mention that rafe and jordan dated for a while?

Ted: Well, the man definitely has a pattern. It must be pretty difficult. It's not easy, right?

Hope: No, not easy. Not at all.

[Gun clicks]

Ciara: Is this really necessary?

Ben: It's absolutely necessary. I'm stefan dimera's head of security, and I have a permit. Situations like this, usually words aren't enough.

Ciara: Oh, so you're going full vigilante on us?

Ben: Oh, I'm doing exactly what I have to do in order to protect chloe and the kids.

Ciara: Yeah, and it could be committing suicide, ben. We know what these men are capable of, okay? What if you get killed? You could get killed, or you could get kidnapped. What if you don't come home?

Ben: Ciara, that's not an option because I have a very, very good reason to get back to salem as soon as possible.

Ciara: Me.

Ben: You.

Ciara: [Laughs]

Jj: So, will you give me the lighter? I need to take it down to the police station.

[Door clicks]

Claire: Hey, guys, hey. You back already?

[Door slams]

Tripp: Well, it wasn't easy, but we stuck to the story.

Claire: Right, so you think they bought that you two are a couple?

Haley: I hope so. I mean, she definitely tried to trip us up. I mean, she-- she even asked about you.

Jj: Me?

Haley: Mm-hmm. She said that your father told ice that we kissed.

Eve: Abe, you can't be naive enough to believe that tripp dalton and haley chen are actually in love.

Abe: I believe that they have genuine feelings for each other, before I believe whatever this relationship between you is supposed to be.

Jack: Now, abraham, that's hitting below the belt.

Abe: You say my name with such familiarity.

Eve: Because you know him.

Abe: No. I don't know him. I mean, I hear and I see my old friend standing in front of me-- the man we lost too soon, the man who used to barbecue at our house, drink all of our beer, bore lexie to tears with them lame-ass jokes. And yet, the man in front of me is a completely different person.

Eve: Well, he's changed for the better.

Abe: Sadly, no. The man you used to be would champion a person like haley chen. You would use the power of your brilliant pen to make her case, hold her up, shine a light on the caring, compassionate young woman she is. And if some opportunistic, wannabe politician came along, preyed on her situation to grab a chance at power, you'd be the first to call them out. Where is that jack? Is this is the man you've become, my old friend might as well still be dead. (Christine) things were stolen from my kids I feel like.

Hope: Thank you for letting me vent, and I'm so sorry that I did so.

Ted: You are under a lot stress. I get it. But one of the perks of having a da who is your friend is the fact that you can vent at him anytime you want.

[Knocking]

[Door clicks]

Hope: Come in-- hey, hi.

Rafe: Hey.

Hope: When did you get back?

Rafe: I just did. Oh, what a surprise. Ted's here.

Ted: Hello, rafe.

Hope: What happened in california? Was it a wild goose chase?

Rafe: Actually, not so much.

[Soft dramatic music]

[Cell phone rings]

Ben: [Groans] Aw, it's stefan.

Ciara: [Sighs] You better get that.

[Keypad beeps]

Ben: Hey, stefan. Oh, really? So, do you not want me to leave right away, or... why? No--okay. No, no, no. No, it's no problem. Well, uh, we'll just talk later. All right.

[Keypad beeps]

Ciara: So, you're not going?

Ben: Well, apparently, he wants to explain to me later and for now, I'm supposed to stay put in salem.

Ciara: Yay, yay, yay, yay. Oh, my gosh. This is the best news ever, ben. I am so relieved. You have no idea.

Ben: Yeah, yeah, me too.

Ciara: Oh. Mmm.

Ben: [Sighs]

Ciara: [Giggles] But you know what? The truth is, I was gonna come with you anyway.

Ben: [Scoffs] Yeah, right. There's not a chance in hell...

Ciara: Ben, ben. I cannot stay away from you. I really can'T. I need you. I need you close to me-- just like this.

[Laughs softly] I need you so, so much.

Jj: Hm, of course, my father talked to ice. Well, what an ass...

[Clears throat] What'd you say?

Haley: That it was totally one-sided and that I only see you as a friend because I'm in love with tripp.

Jj: That's a good answer.

Tripp: Look, whether agent smith believed us or not, it doesn't matter. She can't prove anything one way or the other.

Claire: So, if this agent smith doesn't believe you, then she could put the brakes on the whole thing, right?

Tripp: So far, we passed, but it's an ongoing process, and agent smith is going to be very, very thorough. So, she's gonna be digging hard, which means that the only way haley is gonna be granted citizenship is if our marriage looks 100% for real.

Claire: Right. So, you-- you're gonna go ahead with the wedding?

Tripp: That was always the plan, right?

Claire: Yes.

Tripp: Are you okay?

Claire: [Strained laugh] Yes, I just need some time to digest all of this good news. One second, one second.

Tripp: I should go talk to her.

Jj: Tripp, maybe you should give her a few minutes.

Tripp: Yeah, you're probably right. I'm gonna go lose this jacket and tie.

Jj: So, pulled it off.

Haley: Yeah, for now.

Jj: Oh, and not that it matters right now, but that kiss wasn't just one-sided.

Haley: Jj. Jj, please tell me you understand why I said that.

Jj: You said what you had to say. Look, I'm just hoping it all works out.
